Raw Cross-Testament Parallels¶
Note: The cross_testament_parallels_v2.py tool was unavailable (embeddings not built). Concept context tool was used as alternative. Below are the parallels identified through concept_context.py and manual verse correlation.
LEV 5:15 — Parallels¶
OT Parallels¶
- Lev 5:16 — immediate context: restitution + fifth part + kaphar + salach formula
- Lev 14:13 — leper's asham: "as the sin offering is the priest's, so is the trespass offering: it is most holy"
- Lev 19:8 — profaning hallowed thing → bearing iniquity
- Exo 28:38 — Aaron bears "iniquity of the holy things" on his forehead
- Num 5:6-8 — expanded restitution formula with kinsman fallback
NT Parallels¶
- 1 Cor 3:17 — "if any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy" — NT echo of sacrilege against holy things
- Heb 9:22 — "without shedding of blood is no remission"
LEV 6:2 — Parallels (Trespass Against Neighbor = Against LORD)¶
OT Parallels¶
- Gen 39:9 — Joseph: "how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" — sin against Potiphar's wife = sin against God
- Psa 51:4 — David: "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned" — sin against Uriah/Bathsheba framed as sin against God
- 2 Sam 12:13 — Nathan: "The LORD also hath put away thy sin" — human offense resolved by divine forgiveness
- Num 5:6 — "any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD"
NT Parallels¶
- Mat 5:23-24 — "if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift... first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift" — EXACT structural parallel: reconciliation with brother (humanward) must precede offering to God (Godward)
- Mat 25:40 — "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" — offenses against humans = offenses against Christ
- 1 Jhn 4:20 — "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar"
NUM 5:7 — Parallels (Restitution Formula)¶
OT Parallels¶
- Lev 6:4-5 — parallel restitution formula (restore principal + fifth part)
- Exo 22:1-4 — different restitution scale for theft (2x-5x)
- Eze 33:15 — "If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed... he shall surely live"
- Lev 26:40 — "If they shall confess their iniquity... with their trespass" — confession as prerequisite
NT Parallels¶
- Luk 19:8 — Zacchaeus: "if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold" — voluntary restitution exceeding the asham formula
- Phm 1:18-19 — Paul: "If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it" — vicarious restitution
ISA 53:10 — Parallels (Servant as Asham)¶
OT Parallels¶
- Isa 53:5-6 — "wounded for our transgressions... the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all" — substitutionary bearing
- Lev 5:15-16 — the asham legislation that Isa 53:10 invokes
- Lev 14:12 — leper's asham: blood applied to the person
NT Parallels¶
- 1 Pet 2:24 — "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree... by whose stripes ye were healed" — direct echo of Isa 53:5
- Rom 5:15-17 — "much more the grace of God... hath abounded unto many" — surplus/abundance language echoing the asham's one-fifth surplus principle
- 2 Cor 5:21 — "he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin" — vicarious sin-bearing
- Heb 9:28 — "Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many"
ROM 5:15 — Parallels ("Much More" Language)¶
OT Parallels¶
- Isa 53:10-11 — the asham that produces seed, prolonged days, prosperity — surplus results
- Joel 2:25 — "I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten" — divine restoration exceeding loss
NT Context¶
- Rom 5:15 "much more the grace of God... hath abounded"
- Rom 5:17 "much more they which receive abundance of grace... shall reign in life"
- Rom 5:20 "where sin abounded, grace did much more abound"
The "much more" / "abundance" / "abounded" language in Romans 5 structurally parallels the asham's one-fifth surplus: restoration that exceeds the original loss.
External Corpus Verification Notes¶
Haskell claim: "atoned for the result of the sin as well as for the sin" (CIS 145)¶
VERIFIED by parsing: Lev 5:16 has shalam (make amends for harm done) + kaphar (atonement). The restitution covers the DAMAGE; the sacrifice covers the SIN. Two distinct actions addressing two dimensions.
Haskell claim: "sacrifice without restitution was not accepted" (CIS 144.2)¶
VERIFIED by parsing: Num 5:7 sequence is confess → restore → add fifth → give. The ram is mentioned AFTER the restitution instructions (Num 5:8). Lev 6:5 says "in the day of his trespass offering" — restitution and sacrifice occur together, with restitution specified first textually.
Haskell claim: "sins known only to the individual himself" (CIS 143.3)¶
PARTIALLY VERIFIED: No asham legislation specifies public confession or communal knowledge. Lev 5:15 (bish'gagah = "in error"), Lev 5:17 ("though he wist it not"), Lev 6:2 (lying, deceiving — covert acts). The chattat has a congregational path (Lev 4:13-14); the asham has NO congregational variant. All asham offenses are individual.
Haskell observation: zaraq vs. nathan blood procedure (CIS 143.2)¶
VERIFIED: Lev 7:2 uses zaraq (toss/dash round about). Lev 4:25 uses nathan (put on horns with finger). Completely different procedures.
EGW claim: restitution to include "all that it would have accumulated" (3TC 358.1)¶
The Bible gives DIFFERENT restitution scales: asham = principal + 1/5 (Lev 6:5); theft = 2x (Exo 22:4), 4x-5x (Exo 22:1). Proverbs 6:31 says "sevenfold." The biblical principle is graduated restitution, not a flat 20%. The one-fifth in asham legislation is the minimum for breach-of-trust offenses.
EGW applies trespass offering to cases of deceased victim (5T 339.1)¶
VERIFIED: Num 5:8 explicitly addresses this: "if the man have no kinsman to recompense the trespass unto, let the trespass be recompensed unto the LORD, even to the priest." The provision covers victims who have died with no living relatives — the debt transfers to God's representative (the priest).
