ROM 3:26 — "That he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus"

OT Parallels (the righteous one who justifies): - Isa 53:11 — "my righteous (tsaddiq) servant shall justify (yatsdiq, Hiphil) many" — EXACT structural parallel: the righteous one who justifies - Psa 51:4 — "that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest" (God's own righteousness vindicated, quoted in Rom 3:4) - Psa 85:10 — "Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other" — justice-mercy resolution - Dan 9:24 — kaphar (atonement) + tsedeq olamim (everlasting righteousness) — same pairing of atonement and righteousness

NT Parallels: - 1 John 1:9 — "he is faithful and just (dikaios) to forgive us our sins" — God simultaneously dikaios and forgiving - 1 Pet 3:18 — "the just (dikaios) for the unjust (adikos)" — the righteous one suffers for the unrighteous

ISA 53:11 → ROM 3:26 Structural Parallel

Isaiah 53:11: tsaddiq (righteous) [adj] → yatsdiq (shall justify) [Hiphil verb] → la-rabbim (many)
Romans 3:26: dikaion (just) [adj] → dikaiunta (justifying) [pres act ptcp] → ton ek pisteōs Iēsou (the one of faith in Jesus)
Same root appears as both the subject's character and the subject's action — the righteous one who justifies.

HAB 2:4 → ROM 1:17 → ROM 3:21-26

Habakkuk 2:4: tsaddiq (just) be-emunatav (by his faith/faithfulness) yichyeh (shall live)
Romans 1:17: ho dikaios (the just) ek pisteōs (by faith) zēsetai (shall live)
Romans 3:22: dikaiosynē theou (righteousness of God) dia pisteōs (through faith) Iēsou Christou (of Jesus Christ)
The Hab 2:4 quotation in Rom 1:17 sets up the thesis that 3:21-26 unpacks: HOW the just live by faith — through God's righteousness manifested in the hilasterion.

PSA 143:2 → ROM 3:20

Psalm 143:2: lo yitsddaq (shall not be justified) le-fanekha (before thee) kol chay (any living)
Romans 3:20: ou dikaiōthēsetai (shall not be justified) enōpion autou (before him) pasa sarx (all flesh)
Paul's adaptation of the Psalm grounds the universal guilt verdict (3:9-20) in OT authority, making the nuni de (3:21 "but now") all the more dramatic.
