ISA 53:10 Parallels

OT → NT Direction

  • Rom 5:15-17 — The asham's surplus principle (principal + one-fifth) maps to Paul's "much more" (pollo mallon) + "abundance of grace" (perisseia tes charitos)
  • 2 Cor 5:21 — "made him sin for us" — the sinless one becoming the sin/guilt offering (hamartian epoiesen parallels tasim asham nafsho)
  • Heb 9:13-14 — "How much more shall the blood of Christ" — a fortiori surplus argument from animal sacrifice to Christ's sacrifice
  • Heb 2:10 — "bringing many sons unto glory" — parallels "he shall see his seed" (yireh zera)
  • Heb 2:16 — "he took on him the seed (sperma) of Abraham" — incarnational solidarity with the promised zera

NT → OT Direction

  • 1 Pet 2:24 — "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree" → Isa 53:4,12 (nasa/sabal language)
  • Acts 8:32-35 — Philip explicitly applies Isa 53:7-8 to Jesus
  • Matt 8:17 — Matthew applies Isa 53:4 to Jesus' healing ministry

ISA 53:12 Parallels

OT → NT Direction

  • Mark 15:28 / Luke 22:37 — "he was numbered with the transgressors" — direct quotation
  • Rom 8:34 — "who also maketh intercession for us" — parallels yaphgia (Hiphil of paga)
  • Heb 7:25 — "he ever liveth to make intercession for them" — ongoing intercession
  • Heb 9:28 — "Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many" — nasa chet-rabbim in Greek

ROM 5:15 Parallels (OT Direction)

  • Isa 53:10-11 — The "many" (hoi polloi / tous pollous) to whom grace abounded parallels "the many" (ha-rabbim) whom the Servant justifies
  • Gen 3:17-19 — "by one man sin entered" (Rom 5:12) traces back to Adam's curse
  • Gen 22:17-18 — "in thy seed shall all nations be blessed" — the one-to-many blessing pattern

ROM 5:20 Parallels (OT Direction)

  • Exo 34:6-7 — "forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin" — God's character: grace exceeding judgment
  • Isa 55:7 — "he will abundantly pardon" — Hebrew harbeh lisloach ("multiply to forgive")
  • Mic 7:18-19 — "He delighteth in mercy... will subdue our iniquities"

2CO 5:21 Parallels (OT Direction)

  • Isa 53:10 — "make his soul an offering for sin (asham)" — the OT source of the exchange concept
  • Isa 53:9 — "he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth" — sinlessness preceding the asham identification
  • Lev 5:15 — "a ram without blemish" — the asham animal must be unblemished

COL 2:14 Parallels (OT Direction)

  • Lev 6:1-5 — The asham addresses specific debts (things taken, things sworn falsely) that create a documentable obligation — parallels the cheirographon as written debt record
  • Num 5:7 — "recompense his trespass with the principal thereof" — the debt that must be repaid
  • Isa 43:25 — "I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions" — same blotting-out (exaleipho) language

Philemon 1:18-19 as Asham Pattern

  • Paul assumes Onesimus's debt: "put that on mine account" (v.18) — substitutionary debt-bearing
  • Paul promises restitution: "I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it" (v.19) — handwritten bond (cheirographon-like)
  • Surplus beyond restoration: "thou wilt also do more than I say" (v.21) — the one-fifth principle
  • Onesimus returns as "more than a servant, a brother beloved" (v.16) — restored with surplus status
