Question

What is the theological significance of the high priestly garments (Exo 28), especially the gold plate inscription "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" (Exo 28:36-38) and its function of bearing the iniquity of holy things, and how does this define the priestly sin-bearing concept that Christ fulfills?

HOLINESS

Source: Nave's Topical Dictionary (naves_db.py --topic "HOLINESS")

General scriptures: Gen 17:1; 35:2; Exo 19:6; 22:31; 28:36; 39:30; Lev 10:8-10; 11:44,45,47; 19:2; 20:7,26; Deu 14:2; 18:13; 26:19; Psa 15:1-5; 24:3-5; Isa 4:3; 35:8; 52:1,11; 61:3,9-11; Zec 14:20,21; Mat 5:6,8,48; Rom 6:1-23; 12:1,2; 1 Cor 3:16,17; 6:19,20; 2 Cor 6:14-17; 7:1; Eph 4:20-24; 5:1,3,8-11; 1 Th 4:3,4,7; Heb 12:10,14; 1 Pet 1:14-16; 2:5,9; Rev 14:4,5; 19:8.

Key observation: Nave's explicitly links Exo 28:36 and 39:30 (gold plate inscription) with Zec 14:20,21 (eschatological extension) under the same HOLINESS topic.

CONSECRATION

Source: Nave's Topical Dictionary (naves_db.py --topic "CONSECRATION")

Of Aaron — See AARON. Of priests — See PRIESTS. Of the altar — See ALTAR. Of the temple — See TEMPLE, DEDICATION OF.

Personal: Psa 51:17; Mat 13:44-46; Rom 6:13,16,19; 12:1; 2 Cor 8:5. Conditional: Gen 28:20-22; 2 Sam 15:7,8. Instances: Cain and Abel (Gen 4:4-7); Abraham, of Isaac (Gen 22:9-12); Jephthah (Jdg 11:30,31,34-40); Hannah (1 Sam 1:11,24-28); David (2 Sam 23:16); Zichri (2 Chr 17:16).

INTERCESSION

Source: Nave's Topical Dictionary (naves_db.py --topic "INTERCESSION")

Of Man with God: Gen 20:7; Exo 28:12,29,30,38; 32:9-14; Num 6:23-26; 16:46-50; Deu 5:5; 7:9; 9:18,20,25-29; 1 Sam 7:5-8; 12:23; Job 1:5; 9:32,33; 16:21; 42:8-10; Psa 122:6; Isa 62:6,7; Ezk 22:30; Heb 13:18; 1 Tim 2:1,2; 1 Pet 2:5,9; 1 Jn 5:16.

Key observation: Nave's identifies ALL FOUR modes of priestly nasa in Exo 28 (vv. 12, 29, 30, 38) as instances of intercession. The gold plate's bearing function (v. 38) is classified as intercessory.

Score: 0.44

Key figurative/typological references: Isa 61:10; Mat 22:11; 2 Cor 5:3; Rev 3:18; 7:14; 16:15; 19:8.

LEGENDS (INSCRIPTIONS)

Score: 0.51

Key references: Exo 28:36; 39:30; Zec 14:20; Mat 27:37; Deu 6:6-9.

Observation: The phrase "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" (qodesh la-YHWH) appears in only three biblical contexts: (1) the gold plate inscription (Exo 28:36; 39:30), (2) the eschatological vision of Zec 14:20 where it extends to bells of horses and cooking pots, and (3) the frontlets command (Deu 6:8-9 as parallel concept of words inscribed on the forehead).

References: Exo 28:9-11,21,36; 39:6,8-14,30. The gold plate inscription uses the same technique as the tribal name engravings on the shoulder stones and breastplate stones — "like the engravings of a signet" (pittuchey chotam).

MEDIATION

Connected to INTERCESSION. The priestly bearing function constitutes a form of mediation — the HP stands between the people and God, bearing their names, their judgment, and their iniquity.

ATONEMENT

The Lev 10:17 passage connects priestly eating (bearing iniquity) with the purpose "to make atonement for them before the LORD" — linking the chattat framework to the priestly bearing framework.
