Bible Study: Propitiation, Expiation, or Both — The hilasterion / hilasmos / kapporeth Complex¶
Question¶
When Paul calls Christ the hilasterion (Rom 3:25) and John calls him the hilasmos (1 John 2:2, 4:10), are they describing propitiation (turning away God's wrath), expiation (removing sin's defilement), or both — and what does the Hebrew kapporeth background require? Note: atone-01 established that katharizo (G2511) in Heb 9:23 is the LXX rendering of taher (H2891, 61 co-occurrences) — the Day of Atonement purification verb.
Prior Research Summary¶
Eight prior studies bear directly on this question:
-
atone-01 established the katharizo-taher LXX bridge (61 co-occurrences), confirming that the Hebrews author's vocabulary in Heb 9:23 is purification language (expiation), not wrath-turning language. The LXX also renders kaphar as katharizo in 14 instances (PMI 5.18), meaning "covering" overlaps with "cleansing."
-
atonement-frameworks placed hilasterion/hilasmos WITHIN the chattat (purification/sin offering) framework rather than as a standalone propitiation category. The study found propitiation and purification operating within the same framework, not as competing alternatives.
-
sanc-17-atonement-vocabulary mapped the kapporeth-hilasterion LXX bridge (PMI 9.75, near-perfect correlation). Three atonement dimensions identified: covering, ransom, reconciliation. God is simultaneously the one whose justice demands satisfaction AND the one who supplies it (Rom 3:25-26).
-
sanc-09-day-of-atonement-ritual found DOA vocabulary overwhelmingly purification-focused (taher, qadash), not wrath-focused. But the context presupposes a lethal divine presence (Lev 16:2 — "that he die not"), implying wrath/holiness as the background condition that purification addresses.
-
sanc-18-blood-ministry identified blood's Passover function (protection from destructive divine judgment, Exo 12:13) as the strongest biblical basis for propitiation as wrath-turning. Rom 5:9 explicitly connects blood to wrath-aversion.
-
sanc-03-sanctuary-furniture identified the mercy seat as the spatial convergence of justice and mercy — law beneath, kapporeth above, blood applied on top.
-
atonement-meaning framed biblical atonement as "both propitiation and reconciliation" — propitiation addresses the Godward dimension, reconciliation the manward.
-
jesus-guilt-vs-sin-offering clarified that propitiation operates through priestly/sacrificial bearing of liability, not moral transfer.
Key open question from prior research: The chattat/DOA framework is primarily purification language, but the hilask- words in Rom 3:25 and 1 John 2:2/4:10 appear in contexts with explicit wrath language (Rom 1:18; 2:5; 3:5). Do these texts introduce a wrath-aversion dimension BEYOND what the purification framework contains, or is propitiation simply the Godward face of the same purification act?

The hilask- word family triad (hilasterion / hilasmos / hilaskomai) — semantic content analysis. Tool discoveries confirm all three forms appear in the NT: hilasterion in Rom 3:25 and Heb 9:5, hilasmos in 1 John 2:2 and 4:10, hilaskomai in Heb 2:17 and Luk 18:13. The question is whether these words semantically denote wrath-aversion (propitiation), sin-removal (expiation), or both. The research agent should READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2435-hilasterion.mdandD:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2434-hilasmos.md, and the newly generated G2433-hilaskomai study. Then retrieve the full text of all 6 verses where these words appear (Rom 3:25; Heb 9:5; 1 John 2:2; 4:10; Heb 2:17; Luk 18:13) with chapter context to examine whether each context contains wrath-language, purification-language, or both. -
Romans 3:21-26 in its wrath context (Rom 1:18 through 3:26). The hilasterion in Rom 3:25 appears AFTER a sustained discourse on God's wrath (orge) beginning at Rom 1:18 ("the wrath of God is revealed"), continuing through 2:5 ("treasurest up wrath"), and 3:5 ("God who taketh vengeance"). The research agent should retrieve Rom 1:18; 2:5; 2:8; 3:5; 3:21-26; 5:1-11 with full context and run greek_parser.py on Rom 3:25 to analyze the grammatical construction of hilasterion (anarthrous? predicate accusative?). READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3709-orge.mdfor the wrath vocabulary. The key exegetical question: does Paul's placement of hilasterion AFTER the orge discourse require that hilasterion denotes wrath-aversion, or is it simply the answer to a problem that includes wrath? -
1 John 2:1-2 and 4:10 in their purification context. John's use of hilasmos appears alongside cleansing language: 1 John 1:7 ("the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin"), 1:9 ("faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"). The research agent should retrieve 1 John 1:5-2:2 and 4:7-10 with full context. Does John's hilasmos operate within a purification framework (cleansing from sin) rather than a wrath-aversion framework? Note that 1 John 4:10 explicitly ties hilasmos to God's love initiative: "not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the hilasmos for our sins."
-
Hebrews 2:17 — hilaskomai as priestly action. The verb form hilaskomai in Heb 2:17 is embedded in a priestly context: "to make reconciliation [hilaskesthai] for the sins of the people." The research agent should retrieve Heb 2:14-18 with chapter context and run greek_parser.py on Heb 2:17. Does the priestly framing suggest expiation (the priest removes sin) rather than propitiation (the priest turns away wrath)? Compare with Heb 9:5 where hilasterion refers to the physical mercy seat.
-
The kapporeth background — Exodus 25:17-22 and Leviticus 16:14-15. The LXX renders kapporeth as hilasterion 16 times (PMI 9.75). The research agent should READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3727-kapporeth.mdandD:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-kapporeth-hilasterion.md, then retrieve Exo 25:17-22 (kapporeth description and function — God meets Moses ABOVE the kapporeth) and Lev 16:14-15 (blood sprinkled ON the kapporeth on DOA). The spatial theology matters: the kapporeth is where God's presence meets sacrificial blood. Does this spatial arrangement encode propitiation (blood shields from lethal presence), expiation (blood purifies the contaminated space), or both? -
The wrath-sacrifice connection — Num 16:46-48; Num 25:11; Psa 78:38. These are OT passages where ritual action (incense, zealous act, divine forbearance) explicitly turns away divine wrath. Num 16:46-48 is especially significant: Aaron's incense "made atonement [kaphar] for the people" and "stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed." This is the clearest OT example of a cultic act averting divine destructive action. The research agent should retrieve these passages and examine whether kaphar in these contexts means "to purify" or "to turn away wrath." READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3722-kaphar.mdfor the verb's semantic range. Also retrieve Psa 78:38 ("But he, being full of compassion, forgave [kaphar] their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away"). -
The Passover blood as wrath-aversion — Exo 12:13,23. The Passover blood functions as protection from divine destructive judgment: "when I see the blood, I will pass over you" (Exo 12:13). The research agent should retrieve Exo 12:12-13 and 12:23 with context. The prior study (sanc-18) identified this as the strongest biblical basis for propitiation as wrath-turning. Does the Passover blood typology connect to hilasterion in Rom 3:25? Note that Paul identifies Christ as "our passover" in 1 Cor 5:7, and Rom 3:25 specifies hilasterion "through faith in his blood."
-
Rom 5:9-10 — the explicit blood-wrath-reconciliation sequence. "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son..." This passage explicitly connects blood → justification → salvation from wrath → reconciliation. The research agent should retrieve Rom 5:1-11 with full context and run greek_parser.py on 5:9-10. This is Paul's most explicit statement connecting Christ's blood to wrath-aversion.
-
The katharizo-taher bridge vs. the hilasterion-kapporeth bridge — two LXX translation streams. Atone-01 established katharizo→taher (purification stream). Sanc-17 established hilasterion→kapporeth (propitiation/mercy seat stream). The research agent should READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-taher-katharizo.mdandD:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-kapporeth-hilasterion.md. The key question: do these two LXX bridges represent two distinct dimensions of atonement (purification AND propitiation), or is one subordinate to the other? Note that kaphar maps to BOTH katharizo (14x, PMI 5.18) and hilaskomai (PMI 6.47) in the LXX — the Hebrew verb encompasses both Greek semantic domains. -
OT wrath vocabulary in sacrifice contexts. The research agent should READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-hebrew-wrath.mdandD:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-wrath.mdto map the Hebrew and Greek wrath vocabulary. Then check whether the DOA chapter (Lev 16) contains ANY wrath vocabulary, or whether its vocabulary is exclusively purification. If the DOA itself lacks wrath language, this affects whether the kapporeth→hilasterion bridge carries propitiation semantics from the OT or whether the propitiation dimension is a NT development.
External Corpus Leads (from 00-references.md)¶
- EGW describes the mercy seat as the convergence of "justice and mercy" (GC 415.2) — echoing Rom 3:26 ("just, and the justifier").
-
Verify: Retrieve Rom 3:25-26 and examine whether the text itself requires BOTH justice-satisfaction (propitiation dimension) and mercy-extension (expiation/forgiveness dimension). Run greek_parser.py on Rom 3:26 to analyze the dual-purpose infinitive construction ("that he might be just, and the justifier").
-
EGW calls the blood "a purifier from the defilement of sin" (T26 178.2) — expiation language. Yet she also speaks of "propitiatory sacrifices" (HB 332.2).
-
Verify: Does the biblical text use BOTH purification and propitiation vocabulary for the same act? Check whether Heb 9:22-23 (katharizo/purification) and Rom 3:25 (hilasterion/propitiation) refer to the same sacrificial act viewed from different angles, or to different aspects of Christ's work.
-
PP 356 frames DOA blood application as "satisfaction of the law's claims" — closer to propitiation than pure expiation.
-
Verify: Retrieve Lev 16:14-16 and examine whether the text itself contains "satisfaction of claims" language, or whether the vocabulary is exclusively purification (taher, qadash). Does the physical arrangement (blood ON the kapporeth ABOVE the law) require a satisfaction-of-claims reading, or is this a theological inference?
-
Bohr distinguishes the sacrificial aspect (cross) from the blood application (post-1844 heavenly DOA) (HRC Lesson 24).
-
Verify: Retrieve Heb 9:23-26 and examine whether katharizo specifies WHEN the heavenly purification occurs — at the cross, at an ongoing ministry, or both. Does Rom 3:25 hilasterion refer to the cross event, or to an ongoing ministry?
-
Bohr's framework is overwhelmingly purification/cleansing (expiation) language.
-
Verify: Compare Bohr's emphasis with the full biblical data. Does Rom 3:25 (preceded by three chapters of wrath discourse) require a propitiation reading that Bohr's purely-expiation framework underweights? Or does the LXX background (kapporeth as purification-lid, not wrath-shield) support Bohr's reading?
-
EGW uses "propitiatory sacrifices" language (HB 332.2) — she describes the DOA as a time when "no propitiatory sacrifices were offered without" while the priest interceded in the Most Holy Place.
- Verify: Retrieve Lev 16:17 and examine whether the text prohibits additional sacrifices during the DOA blood ministry. Does the Levitical text itself use propitiation language, or is "propitiatory" an interpretive overlay?

-
External corpus verification directives:
- For EGW "justice and mercy" convergence claim: retrieve Rom 3:25-26 and parse to verify whether the text itself encodes both dimensions
- For PP 356 "satisfaction of claims" claim: retrieve Lev 16:14-16 and parse to check whether taher/kaphar contain satisfaction-of-claims semantics or purely purification semantics
- For Bohr's expiation-only framing: compare the wrath context of Rom 3:25 (preceded by orge in 1:18, 2:5, 3:5) with the purification context of Heb 9:23 (katharizo) to determine whether BOTH frameworks are necessary
- For Bohr's timing distinction (cross vs. post-1844): examine Heb 9:23-26 for temporal indicators of when heavenly katharizo occurs
- For EGW "propitiatory sacrifices" claim: retrieve Lev 16:17 and examine whether additional sacrifices were prohibited during Most Holy Place ministry
