Bible Study: Justification and the Atonement — Which Framework(s) Ground "Declared Righteous"?¶
Question¶
Which atonement framework(s) ground the doctrine of justification by faith — is it the chattat's purification, the asham's debt resolution, the curse's legal liberation, the priestly mediation, or some combination — and how does each framework contribute distinctly to what Paul means by "justified"?
Prior Research Summary¶
From the Integrate List¶
- atonement-frameworks: Established the four-framework taxonomy (chattat/purification, asham/debt-resolution, Deuteronomic curse/legal liberation, priestly sin-bearing/mediation). Found that vocabulary domains are largely isolated — forensic (dik-), cultic (hilask-), redemption (lytr-), and curse (katara/exagorazo) share almost no lexical overlap. Paul deploys different frameworks for different arguments within the SAME letter (Rom 3:25 = chattat/hilasterion; Rom 5:15-17 = asham surplus; Rom 8:3 = chattat/peri hamartias). Isaiah 53:10's asham identification is the OT's most precise Messianic sacrifice-type.
- jesus-guilt-vs-sin-offering: Christ bore sin in priestly/sacrificial capacity, not moral transformation. Imputation vocabulary (logizomai, G3049) is accounting language — crediting/charging to accounts. Rom 4:3-8 uses logizomai 12 times. Kathistemi (G2525) in Rom 5:19 = "constitute/appoint into category" — representative headship. The Deuteronomic curse (Gal 3:13) is attached to MODE OF EXECUTION, not moral state.
- romans-10-4-telos: Telos = "goal/purpose" not "termination." Paul denies faith abolishes the law (Rom 3:31). The law itself teaches faith-righteousness (Rom 10:6-8 quoting Deut 30:12-14).
From atone-15 (Rom 3:21-26)¶
Three frameworks converge in one sentence: forensic justification (dik- family, 7 dik- words in 6 verses), cultic sacrifice (hilasterion/haima), marketplace redemption (apolytrosis/dorean). The dik- root saturation is unprecedented — Rom 3:26 is the ONLY NT verse with all three family members (dikaion + dikaiunta + dikaiosyne). The Isa 53:11 to Rom 3:26 structural parallel: tsaddiq → yatsdiq → la-rabbim mirrors dikaion → dikaiunta → ton ek pisteos Iesou. Paresis (G3929, hapax) differs from aphesis (G859) — paresis = "passing over" (temporary), aphesis = "remission" (permanent).
From Other Prior Studies¶
- sanc-19 (vindication): The tsadaq/dikaioo bridge (LXX PMI 26.99) is primarily forensic/courtroom vocabulary, not ritual. Dan 8:14's nitsdaq uses courtroom verb, not Lev 16 cleansing vocabulary. Isa 53:11 is the hinge text for justification. Rom 3:26 resolves the zero-sum problem of Job 40:8: God simultaneously dikaios and dikaioo-ing.
- atone-08 (Gal 3-4): Paul uses EXCLUSIVELY non-Levitical vocabulary in Galatians — no prosphero, thysia, hilasterion, haima, hiereus, lytron, apolytrosis, or aphesis. The structural spine is the hina purpose chain: exagorazo → eulogia → epangelia tou Pneumatos → huiothesia. Gal 2:16 uses dikaioo three times in one verse. In Galatians, justification by faith is grounded WITHIN the curse framework.
- atone-14 (1 Pet 2:21-25, 3:18): Peter's dikaios hyper adikon (3:18) uses dik- vocabulary within multi-framework convergence — the "just one" who bears sin priestlily, absorbs the curse, and heals through chattat.
- cmd-15 (Faith, Grace, Obedience): Justification is by grace through faith apart from works as ground (Rom 3:24,28; Eph 2:8-9), while genuine faith produces obedience as fruit. "The obedience of faith" (Rom 1:5; 16:26) bookends Romans.
- law-16 (Paul and the Law): Paul identifies "the law" in Rom 7:7 with the Decalogue. Rom 8:4 = "the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us." Rom 3:20 = diagnostic function; Rom 3:21 = witnessing function.
- sanc-17 (Atonement Vocabulary): kaphar operates in three dimensions — covering, ransom, reconciliation. The LXX bridges: kapporeth → hilasterion (PMI 9.75), kopher → lytron (PMI 8.83), kaphar → hilaskomai (PMI 6.47).
Key Synthesis from Prior Studies¶
The prior studies establish that: (1) Rom 3:21-26 converges three frameworks in one sentence; (2) Galatians grounds justification within the curse framework using exclusively non-Levitical vocabulary; (3) tsadaq/dikaioo is fundamentally forensic vocabulary, not belonging to any single sacrificial framework. The open question: Is dikaioo a forensic verdict that DRAWS ON multiple frameworks as its ground, or does it belong to one framework that the others support?
External Corpus Claims (to verify biblically)¶
- EGW links curse-bearing to justification (1SM 363.3): Christ "bore the curse of the law" and "made an atonement" — presenting curse-bearing as the ground for faith appropriating righteousness.
- EGW connects justified-by-blood to propitiatory sacrifice (17LtMs): Chains Rom 5:1, 3:24-25, and 4:7-8 as unified argument. Matthew Henry (HENRY 56749) ascribes justification to "the blood of Christ" and connects to propitiatory sacrifices.
- EGW pairs curse-bearing with law-keeping (1SM 240.2): Curse-bearing as the means whereby the law's authority is upheld — connecting curse framework to law-establishment (cf. Rom 3:31).
- Bohr suggests justification is not "forensic only" (POTWA p. 21): Implies justification involves more than legal declaration.
- Bohr links no-condemnation to intercession (WJSNTC p. 43): Juxtaposes Rom 8:34 intercessory ministry with "no condemnation" of Rom 8:1.

Focus Areas¶
- The dik- word family across justification statements — framework mapping
- WHAT: Map every Pauline dikaioo occurrence to its surrounding framework vocabulary. In each passage where Paul uses dikaioo/dikaiosyne/dikaios/dikaioma/dikaiosis, identify which atonement framework's vocabulary co-occurs: hilask- (chattat), lytr-/apolytrosis/exagorazo (redemption/curse), haima (blood/sacrifice), entygchano/parakletos (priestly intercession), or surplus language (asham).
- WHY: Tool discoveries show JUSTIFICATION references span GEN 15:6 through JAS 2:26 with heavy concentration in Rom 3-8 and Gal 2-4. The atone-08 study established that Galatians uses exclusively non-Levitical vocabulary for justification, while atone-15 shows Romans 3:21-26 converges three frameworks. This suggests Paul deliberately selects framework vocabulary based on context.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rom 3:21-26, 4:1-25, 5:1-21, 8:1-4,28-34; Gal 2:14-21, 3:1-14,24; Isa 53:10-12 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on each key verse (Rom 3:24-26, 4:25, 5:1, 5:9, 5:16-18, 8:1, 8:33; Gal 2:16, 3:13-14, 3:24). READ

"Justified by his blood" (Rom 5:9) — chattat framework analysis
- WHAT: Determine whether "justified by his blood" (dikaiothentes en to haimati autou) places justification squarely within the chattat/sacrificial framework, or whether "blood" here functions as metonymy for death generally.
- WHY: The BLOOD entry in Nave's lists Rom 3:24,25; 5:9 under "Blood of Christ." The ATONEMENT entry lists the same passages under sacrifice. The PROPITIATION entry links Rom 3:25 and 5:1,10,11 together. If Paul's "blood" language in 5:9 carries chattat overtones, then the forensic verdict (dikaioo) is explicitly grounded in the cultic sacrifice.
-
HOW: Run parallels on ROM 5:9 (both OT and NT). Run greek_parser.py on ROM 5:9. Compare haima usage in Rom 3:25 (hilasterion through faith in his blood) with 5:9 (justified by his blood) — READ
G129-haima.md,WG-blood.md,TR-dam-haima.md. Trace whether "blood" in both verses references the same framework or whether 5:9 shifts to a different sense. -
Rom 5:15-19 surplus language — asham framework analysis
- WHAT: Analyze the "much more" (pollo mallon) and "superabounded" (hypeperisseusen) language in Rom 5:15-17,20 alongside the dikaioma/dikaiosis/kathistemi vocabulary of 5:16,18,19 to determine if the asham's restitution-with-surplus principle underlies Paul's justification argument.
- WHY: The atonement-frameworks study identified the asham surplus principle (restitution + 1/5) as mapping to Paul's "much more" in Rom 5:15-17. The jesus-guilt-vs-sin-offering study found that kathistemi (G2525) in Rom 5:19 = "constitute/appoint" — representative headship. Dikaiosis (G1347) occurs ONLY in Rom 4:25 and 5:18 — both in justification contexts.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rom 5:12-21 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 5:15-19. READ
H817-asham.md,G3900-paraptoma.md,G1347-dikaiosis.md. Run search_strongs.py --lookup G2525 (kathistemi, no library entry — fresh lookup required). Compare the surplus structure: if the offense brings death, "much more" the grace brings ___. What is the surplus over mere restoration? -
"No condemnation" (Rom 8:1) — curse-reversal framework analysis
- WHAT: Determine whether "no condemnation" (ouden katakrima) in Rom 8:1 functions within the Deuteronomic curse framework (reversal of the covenant curse sentence) or the chattat framework (purification removes the basis for condemnation) or the priestly framework (intercession secures ongoing acquittal).
- WHY: The Nave's REDEMPTION entry includes Gal 3:13 and 4:4,5 alongside Rom 3:24-26. The CONDEMNATION concept links to Rom 8:1. The atone-08 study shows the curse framework produces dikaioo through exagorazo. Bohr (WJSNTC p. 43) links no-condemnation to Christ's intercession (Rom 8:34). The context of Rom 8:1-4 mentions "the law of the Spirit of life" freeing from "the law of sin and death" — potentially curse-liberation language.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rom 8:1-4 and 8:31-39 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 8:1-4 and 8:33-34. Run parallels on ROM 8:1 (both OT and NT). Compare katakrima (G2631, no library entry — fresh lookup) with katara (curse, G2671) vocabulary. Check whether Paul's "condemn" vocabulary (katakrima/katakrino) belongs to the same semantic domain as katara or to the dik- forensic domain. READ

Galatians justification-through-curse-redemption chain
- WHAT: Trace the logical chain from Gal 2:16 (dikaioo x3) through 3:8 (Scripture foreseeing God would justify the nations) to 3:13-14 (exagorazo from curse → blessing of Abraham → promise of the Spirit) to 3:24 (law as pedagogue → justified by faith).
- WHY: The atone-08 study established that Paul uses exclusively non-Levitical vocabulary here and that the structural spine is the hina purpose chain: exagorazo → eulogia → epangelia → huiothesia. This is the clearest case where justification is grounded within a single framework (curse). But does the framework PRODUCE justification or merely ENABLE it?
-
HOW: Retrieve Gal 2:14-21 and 3:1-29 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on Gal 2:16, 3:8, 3:11, 3:13-14, 3:24. READ
G1805-exagorazo.md,WG-curse.md. Compare with Rom 3:21-26 where justification sits within chattat/hilasterion vocabulary — same verb (dikaioo), different framework grounding. -
Isa 53:11 — the OT source of Pauline justification vocabulary
- WHAT: Analyze Isa 53:11's yatsdiq tsaddiq avdi la-rabbim ("my righteous servant shall justify many") as the OT source text for Paul's justification doctrine, and determine which framework(s) Isaiah uses in the immediate context (asham in 53:10, sin-bearing/nasa in 53:4,11,12, curse-like language in 53:8 "cut off").
- WHY: The sanc-19 study identified Isa 53:11 as the "hinge text" where tsaddiq + yatsdiq mirrors Rom 3:26's dikaion + dikaiunta. The JUSTIFICATION Nave's entry lists Isa 53:11 among its general scriptures. The atonement-frameworks study noted that Isa 53:10 identifies the Servant's death as an asham — but the VERB for what the Servant accomplishes for the many is yatsdiq (Hiphil of tsadaq = "declare righteous/justify"). This creates a cross-framework intersection: asham sacrifice → forensic justification.
-
HOW: Retrieve Isa 52:13-53:12 with full chapter context. Run hebrew_parser.py on Isa 53:10-12 (especially the Hiphil of tsadaq in v.11). READ
H6663-tsadaq.md,H817-asham.md,H5375-nasa.md,H5771-avon.md,H6588-pesha.md,TR-tsadaq-dikaioo.md. Map which framework vocabulary appears in each verse of Isa 53. -
The divine passive in justification — who justifies?
- WHAT: Analyze whether Paul's dikaioo constructions consistently use the divine passive (God as unexpressed agent) and what this reveals about the framework. In the chattat, God forgives (salach). In the curse, God liberates. In priestly, God accepts. In forensic, God declares. Is dikaioo's passive voice framework-specific?
- WHY: The grammar reference library has
divine-passive.mdwhich covers Rom 3:28; 4:25; 5:9 specifically. The tool discoveries show dikaioo in Nave's JUSTIFICATION entry appears in both active (God justifies, Rom 3:26; 8:33) and passive (justified by faith, Rom 5:1; by blood, 5:9; by grace, Tit 3:7). The active/passive distribution may reveal whether Paul sees justification as a divine act (active) or a status conferred (passive). -
HOW: READ
D:/bible/bible-studies/grammar-reference/greek/divine-passive.md. Run greek_parser.py on all dikaioo occurrences in key passages: Rom 3:24, 3:26, 3:28, 4:2, 4:5, 5:1, 5:9, 8:30, 8:33; Gal 2:16 (x3), 3:8, 3:11, 3:24. Classify each as active or passive, and note the expressed agent/instrument in each case. -
Rom 4:25 — the unique dikaiosis passage
- WHAT: Analyze "delivered for our offenses, raised for our justification" (paredothe dia ta paraptomata hemon kai egerthe dia ten dikaiosin hemon). This is one of only two NT occurrences of dikaiosis (G1347). The parallel structure (delivered FOR offenses / raised FOR justification) creates a death-resurrection-justification chain that may transcend any single framework.
- WHY: Dikaiosis appears only in Rom 4:25 and 5:18. The Nave's ATONEMENT entry lists Rom 4:25 among unclassified scriptures. The death/resurrection pairing here suggests that justification requires not only the sacrifice (death = chattat/asham/curse-bearing) but also the resurrection as its basis. No OT sacrifice framework has a "resurrection" component — this may be where the frameworks are transcended.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rom 4:22-5:2 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 4:25. READ
G1347-dikaiosis.md,G3900-paraptoma.md. Run parallels on ROM 4:25 (both OT and NT). Compare the two dikaiosis occurrences: 4:25 (raised for our justification) and 5:18 (one righteous act unto justification of life). -
Reconciliation and justification — sequence or synonyms?
- WHAT: Determine the relationship between "justified" (Rom 5:1,9) and "reconciled" (Rom 5:10-11, katallage/katallasso) in Paul's argument. Does reconciliation follow from justification (forensic then relational), or does justification INCLUDE reconciliation? Are they two words for the same reality or two distinct acts?
- WHY: The Nave's RECONCILIATION entry links LEV 8:15, ROM 5:1,10, 2 COR 5:18-21 together. Paul's argument in Rom 5:1-11 moves from "justified by faith → peace with God" (v.1) to "justified by his blood" (v.9) to "reconciled by his death" (v.10) to "reconciled → saved by his life" (v.10) — a clear argumentative progression. The PROPITIATION entry also lists Rom 5:1,10,11 alongside Rom 3:25. Reconciliation (katallage) is relational, not forensic — it may correspond to the priestly framework (restored access to God).
-
HOW: Retrieve Rom 5:1-11 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 5:9-11. READ
G2643-katallage.md,G1515-eirene.md,WG-peace.md,TR-shalowm-eirene.md. Run parallels on ROM 5:10. Investigate whether katallasso vocabulary overlaps with the priestly (prosago/prosagoge) or curse-reversal (exagorazo) domains. -
Rom 8:31-34 — the courtroom scene and all-framework integration
- WHAT: Analyze Rom 8:31-34's rhetorical questions as a courtroom scene: "Who shall lay anything to the charge?" (8:33) — "It is God that justifies" (8:33) — "Who is he that condemns?" (8:34) — "Christ who died, rose, intercedes" (8:34). This passage places justification (forensic), death (chattat/asham), resurrection, and intercession (priestly) in a single argumentative climax.
- WHY: The Nave's JUSTIFICATION entry includes Rom 8:1,30,31,33,34. Bohr (WJSNTC p. 43) specifically links Rom 8:34's intercession to no-condemnation. Paul's argument here explicitly names death, resurrection, and intercession as the basis for the courtroom verdict of "no charge" — potentially integrating all four frameworks in the climactic passage.
- HOW: Retrieve Rom 8:28-39 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 8:33-34. Run parallels on ROM 8:33 (both OT and NT) — the "who shall lay anything to the charge" may echo Isa 50:8 (one of the JUSTIFICATION Nave's entries). READ
G2917-krima.md,G2920-krisis.md,H4941-mishpat.md. Check whether Isa 50:8's "he is near that justifieth me" uses tsadaq Hiphil like Isa 53:11.
External Corpus Leads (from 00-references.md)¶
- EGW links curse-bearing to justification (1SM 363.3)
-
Verify: Does Paul himself ever pair katara/epikataratos vocabulary with dikaioo in the same passage? Check whether Gal 3:13 (katara) and 3:24 (dikaioo) share a continuous argument or whether the curse-to-justification chain passes through intermediate concepts (blessing, promise, Spirit, adoption). Run greek_parser.py on Gal 3:13-14 and 3:24 to see if any grammatical link (purpose clause, result clause) directly connects exagorazo to dikaioo.
-
EGW chains Rom 5:1 + 3:24-25 + 4:7-8 as unified argument (17LtMs)
-
Verify: Trace Paul's own argument structure. Does Rom 3:24-25 (hilasterion/blood) lead to 4:7-8 (forgiveness/imputation) and then to 5:1 (peace)? Or does Paul reset his argument between chapters? Retrieve Rom 3:21-5:2 as a continuous passage. Map the logical connectives (oun, gar, dia) between 3:26 and 4:1, and between 4:25 and 5:1.
-
EGW pairs curse-bearing with law-keeping (1SM 240.2)
-
Verify: Does Paul in Galatians connect curse-redemption (3:13) to law-fulfillment, or only to promise-reception (3:14)? Check whether the hina clause after exagorazo in 3:13 points toward law-keeping or toward receiving the Spirit. Compare with Rom 3:31 "do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: we establish the law" and Rom 8:4 "that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us."
-
Bohr suggests justification is not "forensic only" (POTWA p. 21)
-
Verify: Examine all dikaioo contexts to see if any carry dimensions beyond courtroom declaration. Does dikaioo ever mean "make righteous" (transformative) rather than "declare righteous" (forensic)? READ
G1344-dikaioo.mdfor the full translation distribution. Check whether the Hiphil of tsadaq (H6663) in the OT is ever used in a transformative sense. Compare 1 Cor 6:11 "ye are justified" alongside "ye are washed" and "ye are sanctified" — does the triad suggest justification includes more than declaration? -
Bohr links no-condemnation to intercession (WJSNTC p. 43)
- Verify: In Rom 8:1-4 and 8:31-34, does Paul ground "no condemnation" in Christ's intercession (v.34), in Christ's death (v.34), in Christ's resurrection (v.34), or in "the law of the Spirit" (v.2)? Map the logical structure of 8:1-4 (gar/gar/gar chain) to determine whether the "no condemnation" of v.1 is grounded in the law of the Spirit (v.2), in God's sending of the Son (v.3), or in the fulfilled righteousness (v.4). Then examine whether 8:33-34 provides an additional or alternative grounding.
