03-analysis.md — Earth Beast and False Prophet (Rev 13:11-18)

Question

What does the structural and typological evidence identify about the earth beast of Revelation 13:11-18?

Focus Area 1: Arnion Anomaly

Rev 13:11 — The sole non-Christological arnion

Arnion (G721) appears 30 times in the NT. Twenty-nine are Christological — 28 in Revelation designating Christ as the slain, reigning, victorious Lamb, plus John 21:15 where Jesus tells Peter to feed his lambs. The 30th occurrence is Rev 13:11: the earth beast has two horns homoia arnio (like a lamb).

The choice of arnion over amnos (G286, the Baptist's lamb-word in John 1:29, 36) is deliberate. Amnos is the sacrificial designation — the Lamb of God who takes away sin. Arnion is Revelation's throne-room title — the Lamb who opens seals, receives worship, and conquers the beast. By using arnion, John makes the parody operate at the highest Christological register. The false prophet does not merely look gentle; it wears the specific vocabulary that belongs to the enthroned Christ.

Homoios (G3664) in the dative (arnio) signals appearance resemblance, not identity. The horns look LIKE a lamb's. The deception is external. But elalei (imperfect active indicative of laleo G2980) discloses the reality: habitual, ongoing dragon-speech. The lamb exterior is static; the dragon content is continuous.

Rev 5:6 — The authentic Lamb's horns

The Lamb (arnion) has seven horns (kerata hepta) and seven eyes — seven Spirits of God. Seven = completeness. The earth beast has two horns (kerata duo). Two vs. seven = incomplete authority. The absence of crowns (diadems) on the earth beast's horns contrasts with the sea beast's ten crowned horns (13:1) and the dragon's seven crowned heads (12:3). Whatever the two horns represent, they are uncrowned — the earth beast's power is not monarchical.

Assessment

The arnion anomaly is the sharpest single-verse parody identifier in Revelation. It establishes that the earth beast's deception is specifically Christological: this entity presents itself as representing Christ. Any identification must account for a power that looks Christian but acts as the dragon's agent.

Focus Area 2: Earth/Sea Origin Distinction

Rev 13:11 — ek tes ges (out of the earth)

The first beast rises ek tes thalasses (13:1, out of the sea). The second rises ek tes ges (13:11, out of the earth). In Daniel 7:2-3, all four beasts rise from the sea. Rev 17:15 interprets the waters: "peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues." The sea represents densely populated, politically contested civilizations. Every prophetic beast before Rev 13:11 rises from this sea of nations. The earth beast is the sole exception in all prophetic literature.

OT background: sea as chaos, earth as stability

The sea (yam, H3220) in OT prophetic imagery is the chaos realm — domain of leviathan and hostile powers (Isa 27:1; Ps 74:13). Earth (eretz, H776) is the stable counterpart. Rev 12:16 uses ge positively: "the earth helped the woman" — the earth provides refuge from the dragon's flood.

What ek tes ges signals

If sea = densely populated, chaotically contested political territory, then earth (by contrast within the text's own interpretive framework) signals territory that is NOT characterized by dense, multi-national populations and centuries of political conflict. The preposition ek (out of) marks origin — where the power emerges from. The earth beast arises from newer, less populated, more stable conditions than the sea-beast powers.

Rev 12:16-17 — narrative context

The earth helps the woman (12:16). The dragon, enraged, goes to make war with the remnant who keep God's commandments (12:17). Then the earth beast rises (13:11). The narrative sequence creates a bitter irony: the territory that sheltered God's people produces a power that eventually persecutes them.

Assessment

The earth origin is a distinguishing geographic/demographic marker. It does not merely signal "religious" vs. "political" (as some Reformation commentators read it). It signals a different TYPE of territory — newer, less populated, arising under more stable conditions. Combined with the timing (post-deadly-wound, i.e., post-1798 in historicist chronology), this narrows the candidates to powers emerging in relatively new territory during that period.

Focus Area 3: Six Spirit-Parody Functions

The revs2-19 study cataloged six functions where the earth beast structurally mirrors the Holy Spirit. Each parody function has a genuine divine counterpart:

Function 1: Appearance vs. voice (Rev 13:11)

Authentic: The Holy Spirit does not present a deceptive exterior — he speaks what he hears (John 16:13) and testifies of Christ (John 15:26). Parody: The earth beast has lamb-like horns (arnion exterior) but speaks as a dragon (elalei hos drakon). The gap between appearance and voice IS the deception.

Function 2: Fire from heaven (Rev 13:13)

Authentic: Fire from heaven authenticates true worship — Elijah at Carmel (1 Kings 18:38), tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:3). Parody: The earth beast makes fire come down from heaven (pyr ek tou ouranou) as a sign. It appropriates the divine authentication mechanism for a false worship program.

Function 3: Giving pneuma to the image (Rev 13:15)

Authentic: The Spirit gives life (John 6:63; 2 Cor 3:6) and animates believers as living temples. Parody: The earth beast gives pneuma (G4151) to the image — functional animation for speech and enforcement. John uses pneuma, not zoe (life), psyche (soul), bios (livelihood), or pnoe (physical breath). The image receives institutional capacity, not genuine life.

Function 4: Directing worship toward another (Rev 13:12)

Authentic: The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ, not himself (John 16:14): "He shall glorify me." Parody: The earth beast causes worship toward the first beast (poiei + hina + proskunesosin to therion). Everything the earth beast does is directed toward the first beast — it never seeks worship for itself. This self-effacing, other-directed function structurally mirrors the Spirit's Christ-glorifying role.

Function 5: Marking followers (Rev 13:16)

Authentic: The Holy Spirit seals believers (Eph 1:13; 4:30) — sphragis on the forehead only, indicating conviction. Parody: The earth beast causes all to receive charagma on forehead or hand. The hand option reveals the counterfeit accepts compliance without conviction.

Function 6: Sign-working for authentication (Rev 13:13-14)

Authentic: God authenticates the gospel with signs, wonders, powers, and Spirit gifts (Heb 2:4). Parody: The earth beast performs semeia megala (great signs) to authenticate the beast's authority. 2 Thess 2:9 describes these as semeiois kai terasin pseudous — signs and wonders of falsehood.

Assessment

All six parody functions require an entity capable of sustained institutional religious activity: (1) maintaining a Christian appearance while promoting dragon-content, (2) performing sign-authentication over time, (3) animating an institutional image with functional authority, (4) redirecting worship away from Christ toward the beast system, (5) enforcing an allegiance marker, and (6) claiming divine authentication for false teaching. A single individual or a localized cult cannot fulfill all six functions across the sustained period the text implies.

Focus Area 4: Daniel 3 Typology

Five structural elements transfer from Daniel 3 to Revelation 13:

Element Daniel 3 Revelation 13
1. Image created for worship Tselem of gold, 60x6 cubits (3:1) Eikon of the beast (13:14)
2. Universal worship commanded All peoples, nations, languages (3:4-5) All small/great, rich/poor, free/bond (13:16)
3. Death decree for non-compliance Burning fiery furnace (3:6) Killed (apoktanthosin, 13:15)
4. Faithful minority refuses Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego (3:16-18) Those who keep commandments and faith (14:12)
5. Divine vindication Fourth figure in furnace (3:25) Victors on sea of glass (15:2-4)

LXX verbal parallels

Dan 3:1 LXX: tselem → eikon (same word as Rev 13:14). Dan 3:5 LXX: sgid → proskuneo (same worship verb as Rev 13:12, 15). The image dimensions (60 x 6 cubits) echo the 6-pattern of 666.

What the typology requires

The Daniel 3 pattern involves a STATE entity with enforcement power that creates and mandates worship of an image. Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon — he possessed both political authority and the religious infrastructure to enforce worship. The earth beast must similarly possess or direct sufficient political-religious power to create an image, command worship, issue death decrees, and enforce economic sanctions. This is not the profile of a purely spiritual movement or a single individual — it requires state-level coercive capacity.

Focus Area 5: Poiei + Hina Grammar

The earth beast's actions in Rev 13:12-16 are dominated by poieo (G4160) in causative constructions:

  • 13:12 — poiei (present active indicative) + hina proskunesosin = causes that they should worship
  • 13:13 — poiei semeia megala + hina pyr katabainein = does great signs so that fire comes down
  • 13:14 — edothe auto poiesai = given (divine passive) to do/perform signs
  • 13:15 — edothe auto dounai pneuma + hina lalesei + poiese hina apoktanthosin = given to give pneuma so image speaks and causes killing
  • 13:16 — poiei pantas + hina dosin charagma = causes all to receive mark

Structural significance

The causative poiei + hina encodes compulsion — the earth beast does not invite, suggest, or persuade. It CAUSES. The present tense (poiei at 13:12, 13:13, 13:16) indicates ongoing, habitual action — not a one-time event but a sustained program of coercion. This is the grammar of institutional enforcement, not charismatic persuasion.

The worship hina (13:12) precedes the mark hina (13:16): worship is the goal, mark is the instrument. As revs2-36 established, the three elements — worship, image, mark — form an inseparable triad, grammatically bound by coordinate kai in Rev 14:9 and confirmed by triple negation in Rev 20:4.

Focus Area 6: False Prophet Trajectory

Four passages trace the earth beast across Revelation:

Rev 13:11-18 — Introduction. The earth beast rises, exercises derivative authority, performs signs, commands the image, imposes the mark. No title yet — John withholds the name.

Rev 16:13-14 — Named. Three unclean spirits from the mouths of dragon, beast, and pseudoprophetes (G5578). This is the first occurrence of the title "false prophet." The title is retrospective — applied after the unholy trinity acts in concert. The mouth-origin parallels the dragon speech of 13:11 (elalei hos drakon): deceptive content from the verbal organ.

Rev 19:20 — Captured. "The false prophet that wrought miracles before him (enopion autou), with which he deceived (eplanesen) them that had received the mark (charagma) and them that worshipped his image (eikona)." Four verbal links — signs, enopion, planao, charagma/eikon — form an inescapable chain connecting 19:20 to 13:11-16. The identification is not inferred; it is grammatically welded.

Rev 20:10 — Final doom. The devil (ho diabolos ho planon) is cast into the lake of fire where the beast and the false prophet already are. The planao present participle (ho planon) marks the deception function as the devil's defining characteristic — the same function the earth beast inherited (13:14, plana) and the false prophet continued (19:20, eplanesen).

The planao chain

Dragon deceives (planao, 12:9) → Earth beast deceives (planao, 13:14) → False prophet deceived (planao, 19:20) → Devil deceives (planao, 20:10). The deception function passes from dragon to earth beast to false prophet — all the same entity at different stages — and terminates with the devil himself. The earth beast IS the false prophet. The text says so with interlocking verbal chains.

Focus Area 7: Three Unclean Spirits (Rev 16:13-14)

Three unclean spirits (pneumata tria akatharta) emerge from the MOUTHS of dragon, beast, and false prophet — one from each member. They are spirits of demons (pneumata daimonion) performing signs (poiounta semeia) to gather kings for Armageddon.

Triple-Pentecost parody

At Pentecost (Acts 2:3-4), the Spirit came with tongues of fire, filling believers who spoke with other tongues. In Rev 16:13, the unholy trinity dispatches counterfeit spirits from their mouths — a three-source emission replacing the one-source Pentecost outpouring. The mouth-origin connects to the earth beast's defining characteristic: it speaks as a dragon (13:11, elalei hos drakon). The deception is verbal/doctrinal — what comes from the mouth.

Structural significance

Rev 16:13 is the only verse where all three unholy trinity members are named together in sequence: dragon + beast + false prophet. The triad structure is confirmed and the earth beast's title is revealed. The sign-working (poiounta semeia) continues from 13:13-14 — the false prophet's function persists into the sixth plague context.

Focus Area 8: 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 Parallel

Paul describes the man of lawlessness arriving kat energeian tou Satana (by the working of Satan) en pase dunamei kai semeiois kai terasin pseudous (in all power and signs and lying wonders).

Verbal parallels with Rev 13:13-14

Element 2 Thess 2:9-10 Rev 13:13-14
Signs semeiois (dative pl) semeia megala
Wonders terasin (dative pl) fire from heaven
Falsehood qualifier pseudous (genitive) planao (deceives)
Satanic empowerment energeian tou Satana dragon gave authority (13:2)
Deception mechanism apate adikias planao tous katoikountas

Paul condenses, John distributes — with a specific mapping

Paul's man of lawlessness is a single composite figure. John distributes the same Daniel 7:25 profile across two beasts (SP115 tripartite verbal chain, revs2-33). The distribution maps precisely:

2 Thess 2:3-4 → sea beast attributes: - "opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God" = Rev 13:5-6 (blasphemies) - "sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God" = papal divine prerogatives - "mystery of iniquity doth already work" = system already developing in Paul's day

2 Thess 2:9-10 → earth beast attributes: - "working of Satan" with "signs and lying wonders" = Rev 13:13-14 (semeia megala) - "all deceivableness" = Rev 13:14 (planao tous katoikountas) - "strong delusion that they should believe a lie" = image-worship deception (13:14-15)

2 Thess 2:3 apostasia → earth beast trajectory: - "falling away first" = lamb-like → dragon-speaking transition

This means the "revealing" (apokalypthe) of the man of lawlessness is not a single past event but a progressive unmasking reaching completion in the final crisis. The Reformation was a partial revealing — Luther and the Reformers identified the sea beast. But that identification has been progressively lost; most Protestants today reject what their own founders taught, and the sea beast remains unrecognized by the majority of the world.

The three angels' messages (Rev 14:6-12) ARE the complete revealing of the entire composite system — unmasking BOTH beasts and their cooperation to "every nation, kindred, tongue, and people" (14:6). The first angel unmasks the counterfeit worship, the second names Babylon, the third warns against the mark. Together they accomplish what the Reformation only partially achieved: a global confrontation with the worship choice. 2 Thess 2:8 connects the revealing to the outcome: "whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth" — the word of truth that exposes the system is what destroys it. Paul's apokalypto (G601) — the same root naming the book of Revelation — means unmasking what was already there, not creating something new.

Why "man" does not require an individual

The phrase ho anthropos tes anomias (2 Thess 2:3) is a qualitative genitive — a Hebraism where the genitive noun functions as an adjective. "Man of lawlessness" = "the entity characterized by lawlessness." The grammar-reference entry on anthropos-individual-vs-type establishes that this construction specifies the QUALITY only — it is silent about number, individual-vs-institution-vs-succession, timing, and uniqueness. The same construction gives "son of perdition" (huios tes apoleias) to both Judas (John 17:12) and the beast system (2 Thess 2:3 / Rev 17:8,11) — two different entities sharing the same character-title. "Children of disobedience" (Eph 2:2) is not one child; "man of God" is not one specific person. Daniel's decoder (7:17,23: beasts = kingdoms) and John's dual distribution fill in what the grammar leaves open: the man of lawlessness is a composite system operating through both political coercion (sea beast) and religious deception (earth beast). Paul's present middle participles ho antikeimenos kai hyperairomenos (2 Thess 2:4) describe habitual, ongoing behavior — consistent with persisting institutions rather than a single individual's career. And 1 John 2:18 confirms: "even now are there many antichrists."

The energeia + subjective genitive (Satan as agent) parallels the dragon's active authority-transfer in Rev 13:2 (edoken). The satanic working that empowers both Paul's man of lawlessness and John's beast system has a single source.

Focus Area 9: Pneuma to the Image (Rev 13:15)

Double-didomi construction

Edothe auto dounai pneuma te eikoni tou theriou: "it was given to him to give spirit/breath to the image of the beast." This is the only double-didomi in Rev 13's edothe inventory. Three authority levels are embedded: 1. God permits (edothe — divine passive) 2. Earth beast mediates (dounai — aorist infinitive) 3. Image receives (pneuma)

Pneuma, not zoe/psyche/bios/pnoe

John's choice of pneuma (G4151) over the other life-vocabulary is precise. Zoe (G2222) = divine life quality. Psyche (G5590) = personal life/soul. Bios (G979) = material life. Pnoe (G4157) = physical breath (LXX Gen 2:7). Pneuma = functional animation. The image receives the capacity to speak (lalesei — authoritative pronouncement) and to enforce (poiese hina apoktanthosin — causes killing). This is institutional authority — speech and coercion — not genuine life.

OT idol polemic reversal

Ps 135:15-17: idols have no breath (ruach) in their mouths. Hab 2:18-19: graven images have no breath. Rev 13:15 reverses this: the beast's image HAS pneuma and SPEAKS. This is not a conventional idol. It is something unprecedented — an institutional construct with the capacity for authoritative pronouncement and enforcement.

Focus Area 10: Earth/Sea Distinction in Daniel and Revelation

Daniel's beasts: all from the sea

Daniel 7:2-3: four beasts rise from the sea (yamma). The sea is the realm of chaotic, multi-national political contestation. All four Daniel beasts — Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome — emerge from this dense, contested territory. Rev 13:1 follows this pattern: the composite sea beast rises from the thalassa.

Rev 13:11: the anomaly

The earth beast is the ONLY beast in all prophetic literature whose origin is the earth. This uniqueness is itself a distinguishing marker. Whatever the earth beast represents, it is unprecedented in the prophetic bestiary.

Rev 17:15: the interpretive key

If waters/sea = peoples, multitudes, nations, tongues (densely populated, multi-national territory), then earth = territory NOT so characterized. The earth origin signals emergence from a region that is newer, less populated, less politically contested than the ancient civilizations of the Old World.

Focus Area 11: Four Identification Models Evaluation

Textual criteria the identification must satisfy:

  1. Dan 7:17,23 decoder: Beasts = kingdoms/systems, not individuals
  2. Allos therion: Another of the same kind as the sea beast — same prophetic category
  3. Earth origin: Not from densely populated, chaotically contested territory
  4. Timing: Rises after the deadly wound is healed (post-1798 in historicist chronology)
  5. Arnion anomaly: Looks Christian (Christological vocabulary)
  6. Dragon speech: Acts contrary to its Christian appearance
  7. Two uncrowned horns: Non-monarchical authority structure
  8. Six Spirit-parody functions: Sustained institutional religious activity across all six
  9. Daniel 3 capacity: State-level power to create image, command worship, enforce death decree
  10. Enopion autou: Always derivative, never autonomous — acts on behalf of the first beast
  11. False prophet trajectory: Persists from 13:11 through 16:13 through 19:20 to 20:10

Model 1: Apostate Protestantism / United States (Historicist-SDA)

Criterion Fit
Dan 7:17,23 decoder Yes — nation-state = kingdom-level entity
Allos therion Yes — same prophetic category as sea beast (political-religious power)
Earth origin Yes — rises in sparsely populated "new world" territory
Timing Yes — United States rises as a power concurrent with the deadly wound (1798)
Arnion anomaly Yes — founded on Christian principles (Protestant heritage, religious liberty)
Dragon speech Yes — trajectory: from Christian founding principles toward coercive religious legislation
Two uncrowned horns Yes — civil and religious liberty (republican, not monarchical)
Six Spirit-parody functions Yes — Protestant religious institutions with state-backing capability can sustain all six functions over time
Daniel 3 capacity Yes — only a nation-state with both legislative and enforcement apparatus can create, mandate, and enforce an image-worship system
Enopion autou Yes — exercises the first beast's authority type (church-state union) in a representative capacity
False prophet trajectory Yes — persists as an institutional power through the end-time scenario

Textual tensions: The text does not name the United States. The identification is an interpretive application of structural criteria, not a direct statement. The "two horns = civil and religious liberty" reading is a plausible interpretation of the uncrowned horns but is not required by the text. The allos therion criterion means the earth beast must be the same TYPE of entity as the sea beast — a political-religious system — which the United States as a Protestant-heritage nation-state satisfies.

Model 2: Roman Hierarchy/Clergy (Reformation Historicist)

Criterion Fit
Dan 7:17,23 decoder Partial — clergy is not a separate kingdom; it is part of the same Roman system
Allos therion Weak — if the sea beast is political Rome and the earth beast is ecclesiastical Rome, they are two aspects of ONE system, not "another beast"
Earth origin Weak — Roman clergy arises from the same territory (Europe) as the sea beast
Timing Weak — the clergy exists contemporaneously with the sea beast, not sequentially after its wound
Arnion anomaly Yes — clergy wears Christ's name while serving institutional power
Dragon speech Yes — ecclesiastical coercion and inquisition
Two uncrowned horns Weak — no clear textual connection to clergy's dual structure
Six Spirit-parody functions Partial — clergy fulfills some functions but the model conflates two aspects of the same system into two separate beasts
Daniel 3 capacity Weak — if both beasts are the same Roman system, who creates the image of whom?
Enopion autou Contradictory — the clergy operates within its own system, not before a separate power
False prophet trajectory Partial — but the text requires two distinct entities, not two aspects of one

Critical problem: Allos therion (another of the same kind) requires a SEPARATE entity. If both beasts represent different facets of Rome, there is no "another." Mede and Newton did not have access to the sequential timing criterion that becomes visible only after 1798. The Reformation historicists correctly identified the lamb-personating, dragon-speaking character of religious deception but placed it within the wrong structural slot.

Model 3: Generic False Religion (Idealist)

Criterion Fit
Dan 7:17,23 decoder No — generic principle is not a kingdom
Allos therion No — a generic principle is not another beast of the same kind
Earth origin No — generic religion has no specific geographic origin
Timing No — generic application dissolves the sequential requirement
Arnion anomaly Partial — any false religion can look Christian, but the arnion anomaly is specific
Dragon speech Yes — any false teaching can contradict Christ
Two uncrowned horns No interpretive traction
Six Spirit-parody functions Partial — scattered religious movements do not sustain all six simultaneously
Daniel 3 capacity No — a generic religious principle lacks state-level enforcement capacity
Enopion autou No — the subordination marker requires a specific institutional relationship
False prophet trajectory No — a generic principle does not get "captured" alongside the beast (19:20)

Critical problem: The text's specificity resists generic application. Earth origin, sequential timing, two horns without crowns, enopion subordination — these are specific structural markers that describe a particular power, not a universal principle. The idealist reading correctly identifies the trans-temporal applicability of the deception pattern but sacrifices the historical specificity the text encodes.

Model 4: Future Individual False Prophet (Futurist)

Criterion Fit
Dan 7:17,23 decoder No — beasts = kingdoms, not individuals
Allos therion No — an individual is not "another beast of the same kind" as a political-religious system
Earth origin No interpretive traction for a single person
Timing Possible — futurists place the figure in a future tribulation period
Arnion anomaly Partial — an individual could impersonate Christ
Dragon speech Yes — an individual can speak for Satan
Two uncrowned horns No interpretive traction
Six Spirit-parody functions No — a single individual cannot sustain all six Spirit-parody functions across a historical period
Daniel 3 capacity Weak — requires acquiring state-level power somehow
Enopion autou Partial — could serve a political figure
False prophet trajectory Partial — but 1 John 2:18 says "many antichrists have come" and 1 John 4:1 says "many false prophets have gone out," resisting singular identification

Critical problem: Dan 7:17,23 is the text's own decoder, and it says beasts represent kingdoms. John's own epistolary usage (1 John 2:18, 4:1) emphasizes the plural, institutional nature of antichrist and false prophecy. The futurist model also requires a compressed, literal tribulation period that conflicts with the prophetic time system established in Daniel 9 and applied throughout Revelation (day-year principle verified by the 70-weeks prophecy).

Verdict

The historicist-SDA model (apostate Protestantism / United States) satisfies all eleven textual criteria. No other model satisfies more than five. The Reformation historicist model correctly identified the character of the deception (lamb-personating, dragon-speaking) but misidentified the structural slot (two aspects of Rome rather than two separate powers). The idealist model captures the trans-temporal principle but dissolves the text's specificity. The futurist model violates the text's own decoder (Dan 7:17,23: beasts = kingdoms).

Focus Area 12: Enopion Autou — Authority Relationship

Three enopion occurrences for the earth beast:

  1. Rev 13:12 — exercises all authority of the first beast enopion autou (in his presence)
  2. Rev 13:14 — signs done enopion tou theriou (in the presence of the beast)
  3. Rev 19:20 — false prophet identified by signs done enopion autou (in his presence)

What enopion signals

Enopion (G1799) can signal subordination (acting under another's authority), liturgical function (a priestly role before the one being served), or representative agency (acting on behalf of). In all three occurrences, the earth beast is never autonomous. It always acts in relation to, on behalf of, and in the presence of the first beast.

This mirrors the Holy Spirit's self-effacing role. John 16:14: "He shall glorify ME" — the Spirit does not glorify himself. The earth beast does not seek worship for itself — it causes worship of the FIRST beast (13:12). The parallel is structural and functional.

Assessment

The triple enopion construction marks the earth beast as permanently derivative. It exercises someone else's authority, performs signs for someone else's authentication, and is identified at the end by signs done in someone else's presence. This is the profile of a representative agent — a spokesperson, a prophet (false, in this case) — not an autonomous power.
