Angel introduction formula + en pneumati transport to wilderness

And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

Context: FA01 Babylon-Bride Mirror (IC182). Angel introduction architecturally paired with 21:9-10. apophero (G667) exclusive to these two passages for Spirit-transport. Wilderness location = judgment/desolation, contrasting with mountain of bride vision.

Notes: Bowl-angel introduces both visions using same formula. The verb apophero (G667) for transport occurs only here and at Rev 21:10 in NT. Destination: eis eremon (wilderness) vs epi oros mega (great high mountain). VP001 structural element.

Harlot's garments + golden cup + forehead inscription MYSTERY BABYLON

And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead [was] a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Context: FA05 MYSTERY title and mysterion vocabulary. FA04 harlotry = covenant unfaithfulness. Priestly-garment parody: matches Exod 28:5-6 in every element except blue (tekeleth). Forehead inscription inverts high priest's HOLINESS TO THE LORD (Exod 28:36).

Drunk with the blood of saints and martyrs — John's thaumazo reaction

And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

Dual source of blood: hagion (saints) AND martyron Iesou (martyrs/witnesses of Jesus). The cognate accusative construction intensifies John's reaction beyond casual surprise.

Beast existence parody: was, is not, yet is

And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Context: FA06 parody structure from revs2-19. Beast existence formula inverts divine formula (Rev 1:4,8; 4:8). Beast goes to apoleia (G684), same term for Judas (John 17:12) and man of sin (2 Thess 2:3).

Notes: en (V-IAI-3S imperfect) kai ouk estin (V-PAI-3S present) kai parestai (V-FDI-3S future of pareimi). The tense sequence: imperfect (was) + present (is not) + future (shall be present). Divine formula: ho on (present IS) kai ho en (imperfect WAS) kai ho erchomenos (coming). Parody: God starts with present IS; beast starts with past WAS. apoleian (N-ASF accusative of apoleia G684) = perdition/destruction.

Seven mountains / seven kings interpretive crux

And here [is] the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, [and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

Context: FA06 seven mountains/kings. oros (G3735) = mountain in every other Revelation use, never hill. Text transitions immediately to kings, suggesting mountains ARE kings. OT: mountains = kingdoms (Jer 51:25, Dan 2:35,44).

The kai eisin could be epexegetical (explaining) or additive (adding new info). epesan (V-2AAI-3P aorist of pipto G4098) = five have fallen. ho heis estin = the one IS (present). ho allos oupo elthen = the other has not yet come.

The eighth king, of the seven, goes to perdition

And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Context: FA06 arithmetic composite of Daniel's empires. SP108 seven heads as composite (1+1+4+1=7). Beast goes to apoleia.

Notes: The beast is both the eighth AND is of (ek) the seven — a composite entity that encompasses all prior kingdoms while being a new manifestation.

Ten horns = ten kings, war with the Lamb

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.

Context: Supporting context for the beast-harlot relationship. Ten kings give power to beast, make war with the Lamb.

Notes: The ten horns have not yet received their kingdom (oupo elabon basileian) — future orientation. They voluntarily give power to the beast. Lord of lords and King of kings = christological title.

Many waters = peoples, multitudes, nations, tongues

And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Context: FA02 OT Babylon allusions. Angel-interpreted symbol echoing Jer 51:13. Geographic 'many waters' (Euphrates canals) universalized to global populace.

Notes: The angel explicitly interprets the symbol: waters = laoi kai ochloi kai ethne kai glossai. This universalizes Jer 51:13's geographic reference to the Euphrates canal system.

Ten horns hate the harlot — beast destroys the religious system

And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

Context: FA04 Ezek 16:37-41 parallel. Beast destroys harlot = political power turning against religious system. Same punishment pattern as Ezek 16 harlot-city judgment.

Notes: Four future-tense verbs: misesosin (V-FAI-3P hate), eremomenen poiesosin (perf pass ptcp + V-FAI-3P make desolate), phagontai (V-FDI-3P eat flesh), katakausosin (V-FAI-3P burn). Parallels Ezek 16:37-41 with precision: lovers strip, expose, burn. The harlot RIDES the beast (uses political power) but the beast ultimately DESTROYS the harlot.

God puts it in their hearts to fulfill his will

For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

Context: Divine passive / divine sovereignty in Babylon's destruction. God orchestrates even the beast's turning against the harlot.

Notes: ho theos edoken (V-AAI-3S aorist active of didomi) — God gave/put into their hearts. Divine agency in the destruction of the harlot. The political power's betrayal of the religious system is itself part of God's plan.

Explicit identification: the woman is that great city

And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Context: FA07 every 'great city' in Revelation. Same phrase he polis he megale as Rev 11:8. Angel explicitly identifies woman as city reigning over kings of earth.

Notes: he polis he megale — same phrase used at Rev 11:8 (Jerusalem) and throughout Rev 18. basileuousa (V-PAP-NSF present active participle) = the one currently reigning/exercising royal power over the kings of the earth.

Expanded fall announcement — egeneto progressive deterioration

And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

Context: FA02 OT Babylon allusions. AN085 Isa 21:9 fall formula. FA12 wine/fornication vocabulary network. The angel echoes Ezek 43:2 (God's glory returning to temple).

Notes: epesen epesen (V-2AAI-3S doubled aorist of pipto G4098) quoting Isa 21:9 LXX verbatim. egeneto (V-2ADI-3S aorist middle of ginomai G1096) = HAS BECOME, not 'always was.' This is the key grammatical evidence for progressive moral deterioration — Babylon was not always a demon-dwelling but became one. katoiketerion daimonion (N-NSN habitation of demons) — VP030 contrast with skene tou theou (tabernacle of God, 21:3).

Come-out call: 'my people' inside Babylon

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

Context: FA08 come-out tradition. OT tradition: Gen 12:1 (Abraham), Gen 19:17 (Lot), Num 16:26 (Korah), Isa 52:11, Jer 51:6,45. God claims people as 'mine' while still inside Babylon.

Notes: Exelthate (V-2AAM-2P aorist active imperative of exerchomai G1831) = come out! Decisive/urgent command. ho laos mou (G2992) = my people — covenant-people term. Dual hina-me clauses: (1) hina me synkoinonesete (V-AAS-2P aorist active subjunctive of sygkoinoneo G4790) = that you not co-participate; (2) hina me labete (V-2AAS-2P aorist active subjunctive of lambano G2983) = that you not receive. Both verbs aorist subjunctive = unrealized purpose. The people addressed have NOT YET fully participated in her sins. There is still time.

Double recompense, queen boast, sudden destruction

Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong [is] the Lord God who judgeth her.

Context: FA02 Isa 47:7-9 queen boast allusion. Proportional judgment from Jer 50:29. Sudden destruction 'in one day/one hour.'

Notes: kathemei basilissa (V-PNI-1S I sit + N-NSF queen) — near-verbatim quotation of Isa 47:7-9. chera ouk eimi (widow not I-am) = denial of widowhood. Isa 47:8 LXX parallel. 'In one day' (en mia hemera) = suddenness of judgment.

Kings lament — first of threefold lament

And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

Context: FA03 Ezek 27 Tyre oracle threefold lament structure. Kings at a distance (cf. merchants 18:11-17, shipmasters 18:17-19).

Notes: ouai ouai (interjection doubled) = Alas, alas. he polis he megale = that great city. en mia hora elthen he krisis sou = in one hour your judgment came. The distance motif (apo makrothen hestotos) echoes Ezek 27 Tyre lament.

Merchants lament — second of threefold lament

And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all. The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.

Context: FA03 Ezek 27 cargo list comparison. 28-item cargo list ending with somaton kai psychas anthropon (bodies and souls of men). Ezek 27:13 has only psychas anthropon.

Notes: The 28-item cargo list moves from luxury goods (gold, silver) through textiles and aromatics to food and livestock, climaxing in 'bodies and souls of men' (somaton kai psychas anthropon). Ezek 27:13 LXX has only psychas anthropon — the addition of somata (G4983 bodies) may signal expanded exploitation encompassing total human commodification.

Shipmasters lament — third of threefold lament

And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What [city is] like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

Context: FA03 third tier of Ezek 27 Tyre oracle lament. Dust on heads echoes Ezek 27:30.

Notes: tis homoia te polei te megale = what city is like this great city? Echoes Ezek 27:32 'what city is like Tyrus?' eremothoe (V-API-3S aorist passive of eremoo) = was made desolate. Same root as eremomenen in 17:16.

Heaven rejoices over Babylon's judgment

Rejoice over her, [thou] heaven, and [ye] holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

Context: FA02 echoes Jer 51:48. FA11 altar vindication arc SP037 — vindication of prophets and saints.

Notes: euphrainou (V-PNM-2S present imperative middle of euphraino) = rejoice! ekrinen ho theos to krima hymon ex autes = God judged your judgment from her. Direct echo of Jer 51:48 'then the heaven and the earth shall sing for Babylon.'

Sevenfold ouketi ou me — total cessation formula

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast [it] into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft [he be], shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

Context: FA02 Jer 51:63-64 millstone/stone source. VP026 lychnos extinguished vs eternal. Sevenfold ouketi ou me = strongest Greek negation applied seven times.

Notes: ouketi ou me (double negative + subjunctive) is the strongest Greek negation. Applied seven times for total cessation: (1) found, (2) music, (3) craftsmen, (4) millstone, (5) lamp light, (6) bridegroom/bride voice. The millstone scene echoes Jer 51:63-64 (stone cast into Euphrates). phos lychnou (light of lamp, G3088) — VP026 contrast with eternal light in New Jerusalem (21:23). pharmakeia (G5331 sorceries) = all nations deceived.

Blood of prophets, saints, and all slain on earth

And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Context: FA11 blood of prophets and saints. Echoes Matt 23:34-37 (Jerusalem accusation) but extends scope universally. Altar vindication arc.

Notes: haima propheton kai hagion kai panton ton esphagmenon epi tes ges. Three categories: prophets, saints, and ALL who were slain upon earth. The universal scope ('all slain on earth') transcends any single city. Matt 23:34-37 limits blood-guilt to Jerusalem; Rev 18:24 extends it universally, suggesting systemic rather than geographic bloodguilt.

First announcement of Babylon's fall — epesen epesen

And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

The genitive chain: tou oinou tou thumou tes porneias autes = 'the wine of the wrath/passion of her fornication.' Multi-layered genitives: wine characterized by thumos (passion/wrath, G2372) which is characterized by porneia (fornication, G4202). pepotiken (V-RAI-3S perfect active of potizo) = she has caused to drink (completed action with ongoing effect).

Great city divided into three parts; Babylon remembered

And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

Context: FA07 great city mapping. Babylon distinguished from 'cities of the nations.' Tripartite division.

Notes: he polis he megale egeneto eis tria mere = the great city became into three parts. Babylon babyloon he megale emnesthoe enopion tou theou = great Babylon was remembered before God. The tripartite division may correspond to the dragon/beast/false prophet triad of 16:13.

Notes: tes poleos tes megales (G4172 + G3173 genitive) — same phrase as 17:18 but in genitive. hetis kaleitai pneumatikos (R-NSF + V-PPI-3S + ADV) = which is spiritually called. pneumatikos (G4153 adverb) modifies kaleitai = the city is spiritually/symbolically called Sodom and Egypt. This sets a hermeneutical key: city names in Revelation can function as spiritual/symbolic designations. hopou kai ho kyrios auton estaurothoe = where also their Lord was crucified = Jerusalem.

Four NT allelouia celebrating Babylon's judgment

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous [are] his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

Context: IC103 convergence zone. FA11 altar vindication arc SP037 climax. First of four NT allelouia occurrences (19:1,3,4,6).

Notes: allelouia (Hebrew hallelu-yah) appears 4 times in NT, all here in Rev 19:1-6. ekrinen (V-AAI-3S aorist of krino) ten pornen ten megalen = he judged the great harlot. exedikesen (V-AAI-3S aorist of ekdikeo) to haima ton doulon autou ek cheiros autes = he avenged the blood of his servants from her hand. This completes the altar vindication arc from 6:9-10.

Continued allelouia — smoke rises, elders worship, voice from throne

And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Context: IC103 convergence zone. Four allelouia completing the heavenly celebration of Babylon's judgment.

Notes: ho kapnos autes anabainei eis tous aionas ton aionon = her smoke rises forever and ever. The 24 elders and 4 living creatures respond with Amen, Allelouia. Fourth allelouia introduces the marriage supper of the Lamb — Babylon's fall immediately precedes the bride's appearance.

Angel-worship refusal closing Vision 3 (Babylon vision)

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See [thou do it] not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Context: FA01 structural bracket with 22:8-9 closing Vision 4. VP022 angel-worship refusal bracket.

Notes: Near-identical scene at 22:8-9 closes Vision 4 (bride/New Jerusalem). The structural bracket confirms the architectural pairing of Visions 3 and 4.

Winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Context: FA12 wine/wrath vocabulary network climax. thumos (G2372) and orge (G3709) together.

Notes: ten lenon tou oinou tou thumou tes orges tou theou = the winepress of the wine of the fury of the wrath of God. Maximum genitive stacking: four genitive nouns. thumos (G2372 fury/passion) + orge (G3709 wrath) together = complete divine judgment.

New Jerusalem as bride — divine tabernacle with men

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.

Context: FA01 Babylon-bride mirror. VP030 contrast: demon habitation (18:2) vs divine tabernacle (21:3).

Notes: he polis he hagia Ierousalem kaine = the holy city new Jerusalem. hetoimasmenen hos nymphen kekosmemenen to andri autes = prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. he skene tou theou meta ton anthropon = the tabernacle of God with men. Direct antithesis of katoiketerion daimonion (18:2).

Mirror angel introduction for bride/New Jerusalem

And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

Context: FA01 Babylon-bride mirror (IC182). Same formula as 17:1-3. apophero (G667) exclusive pairing. Mountain vs wilderness.

Notes: Verbatim parallels with 17:1-3: (1) heis ek ton hepta angelon ton echonton tas hepta phialas = one of the seven angels having the seven bowls; (2) elalesen met emou legon = spoke with me saying; (3) Deuro deixo soi = Come I will show you; (4) apenengken me en pneumati = he carried me away in the Spirit. But destination is epi oros mega kai hypselon (great high mountain) instead of eis eremon (wilderness). Object is nymphen (bride) instead of pornen (harlot).

City of pure gold — intrinsic composition vs gilding

And the building of the wall of it was [of] jasper: and the city [was] pure gold, like unto clear glass.

Context: FA01 VP023 gilded (Babylon) vs intrinsic (NJ). Harlot is kechrusomene (plated with gold); NJ IS pure gold.

Notes: he polis chrysion katharon = the city pure gold. Contrasts with 17:4 kechrusomene chrysio (gilded with gold). Babylon is plated/overlaid; New Jerusalem is made of pure gold. Same material, opposite relationship — surface appearance vs essential nature.

Glory of God the light — Lamb the lamp

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof.

Context: FA01 VP026 extinguished lamp (18:23) vs eternal light (21:23). Same lychnos vocabulary.

Notes: ho lychnos autes to arnion = its lamp is the Lamb. The Lamb IS the lychnos (G3088) of the New Jerusalem. In Babylon, phos lychnou ou me phane en soi eti = the light of a lamp shall shine no more in you (18:23). Same word lychnos: extinguished in Babylon, eternal in NJ.

Nothing defiling enters — abomination excluded

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Context: bdelygma (G946 abomination) excluded from NJ but fills Babylon's cup (17:4).

Notes: pan koinon kai [ho] poion bdelygma kai pseudos = anything common/unclean and doing abomination and falsehood. bdelygma (G946) in Babylon's cup (17:4) is explicitly excluded from NJ.

River of water of life — blood vs living water

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Context: FA01 VP025 blood (17:6, 18:24) vs water of life (22:1).

Notes: potamon hydatos zoes = river of water of life. Babylon is drunk with blood (17:6); NJ has river of life-giving water. VP025 antithetical contrast.

Second angel-worship refusal closing Vision 4

And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

Context: FA01 VP022 structural bracket with 19:10 closing Visions 3 and 4.

Notes: Near-identical to 19:10 with minor variations: 19:10 'brethren that have the testimony of Jesus'; 22:9 'brethren the prophets and those who keep the sayings of this book.' The bracket confirms the structural pairing of the two visions.

The woman clothed with the sun — Israel/church figure

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days.

Context: Supporting: possible continuity with Rev 17 woman. Staples argument: same figure corrupted. John's thaumazo at 17:6 signals recognition of degradation.

Notes: Both Rev 12 and Rev 17 feature a 'woman' (gyne) in the wilderness (eremos). Rev 12 woman = faithful covenant community (Israel/church); Rev 17 woman = corrupted counterpart? Dragon also has seven heads and ten horns (12:3) — same beast description.

Sea beast with seven heads and ten horns — the beast the harlot rides

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

Context: Supporting: the beast the harlot rides. Daniel composite (Dan 7:3-7). Seven heads and ten horns = same beast as Rev 17.

Notes: The beast combines Daniel's four beasts: leopard (Dan 7:6), bear (7:5), lion (7:4). The beast receives its power from the dragon (12:3, 13:2). The harlot RIDES this beast (17:3) = religious system using political power.

Divine existence formula: which is, which was, which is to come

John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; ... I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Context: FA06 parody comparison. Divine formula begins with present IS; beast formula begins with past WAS.

Notes: ho on kai ho en kai ho erchomenos = the one who IS and who WAS and who IS COMING. God begins with present being (ho on). Beast parody at 17:8: en (was) kai ouk estin (is not) kai parestai (shall come). God begins with IS; beast begins with WAS. God is always present; beast's existence is interrupted.

Living creatures: Holy, holy, holy — which was, is, and is to come

And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Context: Supporting: divine existence formula comparison with beast parody (17:8).

Notes: ho en kai ho on kai ho erchomenos. Here the order reverses: WAS, IS, IS COMING — but still includes all three modes of existence. Beast at 17:8 lacks the 'coming' element, replacing it with 'shall be present' (parestai) — a counterfeit return.

Mysterion as interpretive signal: symbolic meaning follows

The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Context: FA05 mysterion vocabulary precedent. Only other Revelation use of mysterion. Explicitly introduces symbolic interpretation.

Notes: to mysterion ton hepta asteron = the mystery of the seven stars. When Revelation labels something a mysterion, the explanation that follows is symbolic: stars ARE angels, candlesticks ARE churches. Same signal at 17:5: MYSTERY BABYLON = the name is symbolic, not literal.

Souls under the altar cry for vindication

And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

Context: FA11 altar vindication arc SP037 starting point. Vindication finally pronounced at 19:2.

Notes: heos pote... ou krineis kai ekdikeis to haima hemon = how long do you not judge and avenge our blood? This cry finds its answer at 19:2 when God judges the great harlot and avenges the blood of his servants at her hand. The persecutor is identified as Babylon.

Angel of waters: blood for blood — righteous judgment

And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous [are] thy judgments.

Context: FA11 blood of saints/prophets. FA12 wine vocabulary. Altar vindication arc intermediate station.

Notes: haima hagion kai propheton exechean = they shed the blood of saints and prophets. haima autois edokas piein = you gave them blood to drink. Lex talionis: those who shed blood are given blood. The altar itself speaks — confirming the vindication arc from 6:9.

OT source: Babylon is fallen, is fallen — naphal doubled

And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, [with] a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.

Notes: naphlah naphlah bavel = fallen, fallen [is] Babylon. naphal (H5307) Qal perfect 3fs, doubled for emphasis. LXX renders this as epesen epesen Babyloon — exactly quoted at Rev 14:8 and 18:2. The doubled verb emphasizes certainty and completeness. The context is judgment on Babylon's idol-gods: 'all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.'

Come-out call + golden cup: Babylon a golden cup in the LORD's hand

Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this [is] the time of the LORD'S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. Babylon [hath been] a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.

Context: FA02 come-out call source. FA12 golden cup and wine. Rev 17:4 quarry text. Key transformation: Jeremiah's cup is in the LORD's hand; Revelation's cup is in Babylon's hand.

Notes: kos-zahav bavel beyad-YHWH = golden cup Babylon in the hand of the LORD. In Jeremiah, the golden cup is in God's hand — God uses Babylon as an instrument of judgment. In Rev 17:4, the golden cup is in the harlot's hand — the agency has shifted. This transformation shows Revelation reading OT sources typologically, not mechanically.

O thou that dwellest upon many waters — Rev 17:1,15 source

O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, [and] the measure of thy covetousness.

Context: FA02 OT source for Rev 17:1 'sitteth upon many waters.' Geographic reference to Euphrates canal system.

Notes: shokhaneti al-mayim rabbim = dwelling upon many waters. Refers literally to Babylon's location on the Euphrates canal system. Rev 17:15 universalizes this: waters = peoples, multitudes, nations, tongues.

Destroying mountain — Babylon as oros in judgment oracle

Behold, I [am] against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.

Context: FA06 mountain = kingdom OT precedent. Babylon itself is called a 'mountain' (har) — kingdom, not geography.

Notes: har-hammashchith = destroying mountain. God calls Babylon itself a 'mountain' — using the term for a kingdom/empire, not for a geographic hill. This supports reading oros at Rev 17:9 as 'kingdoms' rather than 'hills.'

My people, go ye out of the midst of her — come-out source

My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.

Context: FA08 direct source for Rev 18:4 come-out call. ammi (my people) + tseu (go out).

Notes: tseu mittokah ammi = go out from her midst my people. Direct source for Rev 18:4 exelthate ho laos mou ex autes. God calls people 'my people' (ammi / ho laos mou) while they are still inside the system.

Heaven and earth sing for Babylon — Rev 18:20 source

Then the heaven and the earth, and all that [is] therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.

Context: FA02 source for Rev 18:20 heavenly rejoicing over Babylon's fall.

Notes: werinnu al-bavel shamayim wa'arets = and they shall sing for Babylon, heaven and earth. Direct source for Rev 18:20 'Rejoice over her, thou heaven.'

Stone cast into Euphrates — Babylon shall sink

And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, [that] thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates: And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far [are] the words of Jeremiah.

Context: FA02 source for Rev 18:21 millstone scene.

Notes: Stone into Euphrates = symbolic action for Babylon's irreversible sinking. Rev 18:21 transforms this into a mighty angel casting a great millstone into the sea — same symbol, intensified.

Queen boast and sudden widowhood — Rev 18:7 allusion

And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: [so] that thou didst not lay these [things] to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it. Therefore hear now this, [thou that art] given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me; I shall not sit [as] a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

Context: FA02 queen boast source. Near-verbatim at Rev 18:7. 'In a moment in one day' = Rev 18:8 'in one day.'

Notes: Three key parallels: (1) 'I shall be a lady/queen forever' → Rev 18:7 'I sit a queen'; (2) 'I shall not sit as a widow' → Rev 18:7 'am no widow'; (3) 'in a moment in one day' → Rev 18:8 'in one day.' Also: 'multitude of thy sorceries' (keshaphayik) → Rev 18:23 'by thy sorceries (pharmakeia) were all nations deceived.'

Recompense her according to her work — Rev 18:6 proportional judgment

Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.

Context: FA02 source for Rev 18:6 proportional judgment.

Notes: shilmu lah kepha'alah = recompense her according to her work. Direct source for Rev 18:6 'Reward her even as she rewarded you.'

Wine cup of fury — cup-of-wrath tradition

For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.

Context: FA12 wine/wrath vocabulary source. Cup of wrath tradition behind Rev 14:10 akratos.

Notes: kos hayin hahemah hazzot = this cup of wine of wrath. The nations are forced to drink God's judgment wine. This tradition underlies Rev 14:10 'wine of the wrath of God poured out without mixture (akratos).'

Jerusalem as foundling bride turned harlot — zanah covenant unfaithfulness

But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was. And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: [the like things] shall not come, neither shall it be [so].

Context: FA04 Ezek 16 harlotry = covenant unfaithfulness. zanah (H2181) applied to Jerusalem as covenant bride who became unfaithful.

Notes: wattizbni (V-Qal-WayC-2fs of zanah H2181) = and you played the harlot. The metaphor requires prior covenant relationship: Jerusalem was YHWH's bride (16:8-14) who then committed harlotry. She used the very garments and gifts from the marriage in her harlotry — same pattern as Rev 17:4 priestly garments on the harlot.

Punishment of the harlot: lovers strip, expose, burn — Rev 17:16 source

Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all [them] that thou hast loved, with all [them] that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness. And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy. And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare. They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords. And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.

Context: FA04 exact parallel to Rev 17:16. Lovers strip the harlot naked and burn her with fire.

Notes: Precise parallel: (1) lovers/nations gathered (Ezek 16:37 / Rev 17:16 horns); (2) nakedness exposed (Ezek 16:37,39 / Rev 17:16 gymnen); (3) stripping of clothes/jewels (Ezek 16:39 / Rev 17:16 eremomenen); (4) burning with fire (Ezek 16:41 / Rev 17:16 katakausosin en pyri). John applies the OT harlot-judgment template precisely.

Oholah/Oholibah two-sister harlotry pattern

Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother: And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity. And the names of them [were] Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus [were] their names; Samaria [is] Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.

Context: FA09 mother/daughters pattern. Two sisters (Samaria and Jerusalem) both engage in harlotry — anticipates MOTHER OF HARLOTS productive concept.

Notes: Two daughters of one mother: Oholah (Samaria) and Oholibah (Jerusalem). Both are covenant entities ('they were mine') who committed harlotry. The two-sister pattern demonstrates that unfaithfulness is reproductive — a mother system generates daughters who carry her character.

Oholibah multiplied her whoredoms — calling to remembrance Egypt

Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh [is as] the flesh of asses, and whose issue [is like] the issue of horses. Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth.

Context: FA09 escalation of covenant unfaithfulness. Multiplied whoredoms.

Notes: wattereb et-taznuwteyha = she multiplied her whoredoms (taznuwth H8457). The harlotry intensifies over time — calling to remembrance the original unfaithfulness and returning to it.

Tyre oracle opening — lamentation for the merchant city

Now, thou son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyrus; And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, [which art] a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I [am] of perfect beauty. Thy borders [are] in the midst of the seas, thy builders have perfected thy beauty.

Context: FA03 Tyre oracle. Source for Rev 18 commercial profile and threefold lament. Qinah lamentation genre.

Notes: sa qinah al-Tsor = take up a lamentation (qinah) over Tyre. The qinah genre of the Tyre oracle is the template for Rev 18's dirge structure.

Tyre cargo list — source quarry for Rev 18:12-13

Tarshish [was] thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all [kind of] riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they [were] thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market. They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules. The men of Dedan [were] thy merchants; many isles [were] the merchandise of thine hand: they brought thee [for] a present horns of ivory and ebony. Syria [was] thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making: they occupied in thy fairs with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and agate. Judah, and the land of Israel, they [were] thy merchants: they traded in thy market wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. Damascus [was] thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool. Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market. Dedan [was] thy merchant in precious clothes for chariots. Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they occupied with thee in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these [were they] thy merchants. The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they [were] thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, [and] Chilmad, [were] thy merchants. These [were] thy merchants in all sorts [of things], in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.

Context: FA03 cargo list comparison with Rev 18:12-13. Overlap substantial but not identical. Both end with human trafficking.

Notes: Ezek 27:13 'they traded the persons of men' (benephesh adam). Rev 18:13 ends with 'bodies and souls of men' (somaton kai psychas anthropon). The addition of 'bodies' (somata) in Revelation intensifies the exploitation. The composite nature of Rev 18's cargo list — drawing from Tyre, not from any Babylon-specific oracle — demonstrates symbolic composite construction.

Tower of Babel: balal = to mix/confuse — etymological origin of Babylon

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people [is] one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Context: FA05 etymology of Babel/Babylon. balal (H1101) = to mix/confuse. Anti-God civilization from its origin.

Notes: al-ken qara shemah bavel ki-sham balal YHWH = therefore its name is called Babel because there the LORD confused (balal H1101). balal means 'to mix' — 88% of 44 OT uses = mixing flour with oil (priestly offerings). Babylon's essential character is deliberate MIXTURE of truth with error.

Hosea commanded to take wife of whoredoms — covenant unfaithfulness

The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, [departing] from the LORD.

Context: FA04 harlotry = covenant unfaithfulness. God is the husband, Israel the unfaithful wife.

Notes: eshet zenunim = wife of whoredoms (zanah H2181). The metaphor requires the marital covenant: YHWH as husband, Israel as wife. Zanah is applied to the covenant people for departing from the LORD.

Plead with your mother — she is not my wife

Plead with your mother, plead: for she [is] not my wife, neither [am] I her husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her adulteries from between her breasts; Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst. And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they [be] the children of whoredoms. For their mother hath played the harlot: she that conceived them hath done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give [me] my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.

Context: FA04 mother-children language. Mother played the harlot; children are children of whoredoms. Stripping naked = Ezek 16:37-41 and Rev 17:16.

Notes: imekhem zanethah = their mother played the harlot (zanah H2181). The mother-children language parallels Rev 17:5 MOTHER OF HARLOTS. Threat to 'strip her naked' parallels Ezek 16:39 and Rev 17:16. 'I will go after my lovers' = seeking political/religious alliances instead of YHWH.

Faithful city become a harlot — zanah applied to Jerusalem

How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.

Context: FA04 OT precedent for harlot-city language applied to Jerusalem. Faithful city that BECAME a harlot.

Notes: eikah hayethah lezonah qiryah ne'emanah = How the faithful city has become a harlot (zonah from zanah H2181). Key: BECAME (hayethah). The city was once faithful (ne'emanah) and then became a harlot. This egeneto pattern exactly matches Rev 18:2's egeneto (became) — progressive moral deterioration of a once-faithful entity.

Tyre as harlot — exception to covenant-only usage

And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot. Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered. And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

Context: FA04 exception to zanah covenant-only argument. Tyre is a pagan city called a harlot. But the usage is commercial seduction, not covenant unfaithfulness.

Notes: wezanethah et-kal-mamlekot ha'arets = she shall commit fornication with all kingdoms of the earth. Tyre's 'harlotry' is commercial seduction — luring nations into trade dependency. This is a secondary use that proves the primary usage domain is covenant unfaithfulness. Nahum 3:4 similarly applies harlot language to Nineveh for political domination through sorcery.

Nineveh as harlot — political domination through sorcery

Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

Context: FA04 second exception to covenant-only zanah usage. Nineveh = political seduction/sorcery.

Notes: merov zenuney zonah = from the multitude of the whoredoms of the harlot (zonah from zanah H2181). Applied to Nineveh for political domination through sorcery/witchcraft. This is an exception: a pagan empire called a harlot. But the mechanism is 'selling nations' through seduction — political manipulation, not covenant infidelity.

High priest garments: gold, blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen

And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen. And they shall make the ephod [of] gold, [of] blue, and [of] purple, [of] scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work. ... And the curious girdle of the ephod, which [is] upon it, shall be of the same, according to the work thereof; [even of] gold, [of] blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

Context: FA05 priestly-garment parody comparison. Harlot's garments (Rev 17:4) match in every element EXCEPT blue (tekeleth).

Notes: zahav utkeleth wa'argaman wetola'at shani weshesh = gold and blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen. Rev 17:4 has: porphyroun (purple) kai kokkinon (scarlet), kechrusomene chrysio (gold), litho timio (precious stones), margaritais (pearls). MISSING: blue (tekeleth). Blue (tekeleth) is the law-faithfulness color (Num 15:38-39). The harlot wears priestly garments but lacks the element representing God's commandments.

High priest forehead inscription: HOLINESS TO THE LORD

And thou shalt make a plate [of] pure gold, and grave upon it, [like] the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

Context: FA05 forehead inscription inversion. High priest: HOLINESS TO THE LORD. Harlot: MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT.

Notes: qodesh la-YHWH = holiness to the LORD. Gold plate (tsits zahav tahor) on the high priest's forehead (metsach). Rev 17:5: epi to metopon autes onoma gegrammenon MYSTERION BABYLON HE MEGALE. Same location (forehead), inverted content. If the harlot parodies the high priest, she represents a corrupted religious system wearing the vestments of true worship.

Blue ribbon — to remember the commandments

Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

Context: FA05 blue = law-faithfulness color. Blue ribbon to remember commandments. Missing from harlot's garments.

Notes: petil tekeleth = ribbon of blue. Purpose: uzekartem et-kal-mitsvot YHWH = and you shall remember all the commandments of the LORD. The concluding phrase 'after which ye use to go a whoring' (zonim) uses the same root zanah — connecting law-forgetfulness to harlotry. The harlot's missing blue confirms she has abandoned the commandments.

Stone became a great mountain filling the earth — mountain = kingdom

Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

Context: FA06 mountain = kingdom in Daniel's prophetic imagery. Stone becomes a 'great mountain' = God's kingdom.

Notes: we'avna' di-mehath letsalma' hawat letuwr rav umlat kal-ar'a' = and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. Mountain (tur / oros) = kingdom in Daniel's interpretation (2:44). This supports reading oros at Rev 17:9 as kingdoms, not geographic hills.

God of heaven sets up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed

And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, [but] it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Context: FA06 Daniel's mountain = God's kingdom. The stone-mountain of Dan 2:35 is interpreted as God's eternal kingdom.

Notes: The interpretation confirms that the mountain of Dan 2:35 = a kingdom. Mountains represent kingdoms in Daniel's prophetic vocabulary.

Overspreading of abominations — bdelygma in Daniel

And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Context: FA09 bdelygma/abomination connection. OT use of shiqquts (abomination) for idolatrous worship objects.

Notes: we'al kenap shiqqitsim meshomem = on the wing of abominations (shiqquts) desolating. shiqquts = abomination, used for idolatrous objects. Rev 17:4 bdelygmaton (G946) in the harlot's cup connects to this OT abomination vocabulary for idolatry.

Solomon's abominations — shiqquts for idol worship

For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as [did] David his father. Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that [is] before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

Context: FA09 bdelygma/abomination = idolatrous worship. shiqquts consistently applied to idol worship in OT.

Notes: shiqquts (abomination) applied to foreign gods: Milcom, Chemosh, Molech. Confirms that bdelygma in Rev 17:4 'full of abominations' refers to idolatrous worship, not merely political or commercial corruption.

Call of Abraham — come-out tradition beginning

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Context: FA08 come-out tradition. First instance: Abraham called out of Ur/paganism.

Notes: lek-lekha me'artsekha = go for yourself from your land. The come-out tradition begins with Abraham being called out of his pagan homeland. This is the prototype for all subsequent come-out calls.

Lot called out of Sodom — escape for thy life

And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

Context: FA08 come-out tradition second instance. Lot from Sodom. Urgency: escape or be consumed.

Notes: himalet al-napshekha = escape for your life. Come-out tradition: leaving a doomed system before judgment falls. Urgency matches Rev 18:4.

Depart from Korah's tents — touch nothing of theirs

And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

Context: FA08 come-out tradition. Separation from apostate leadership within the covenant community.

Notes: suru na me'al ohaley ha'anashim haresha'im ha'eleh we'al-tigge'u bekal-asher lahem = depart from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs. This is separation from rebellion WITHIN the covenant community — the closest OT parallel to Rev 18:4's call to leave a corrupted religious system.

Division between my people and thy people

And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.

Context: FA08 come-out tradition / separation theology.

Notes: wesamti pedut beyn ammi uveyn amekha = I will put a distinction between my people and your people. God's people must be distinguished/separated from systems of corruption.

Go ye forth of Babylon — come-out call in Isaiah

Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it [even] to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

Context: FA08 come-out tradition in Isaiah.

Notes: tse'u mibavel birchu mikkasdim = go out of Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans. The come-out call with joyful declaration of redemption.

Depart, depart — six imperatives of separation

Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean [thing]; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

Context: FA08 come-out tradition climax in Isaiah. Six imperatives. Rev 18:4 allusion chain.

Notes: suru suru tse'u misham tame' al-tigga'u tse'u mittokah hibbaru = depart, depart, go out from there, touch no unclean thing, go out from her midst, be clean. Six imperatives of separation. 'That bear the vessels of the LORD' = priestly responsibility. The call to purity is directed at those serving in a priestly capacity.

Other sheep not of this fold — one flock, one shepherd

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd.

Context: FA08 aule vs poimne. God's people can be in the wrong fold while belonging to the right flock.

Notes: alla proba echo ha ouk estin ek tes aules tautes = other sheep I have which are not of this fold (aule = enclosure/fold). mia poimne heis poimen = one flock (poimne = flock), one shepherd. Aule (G833 fold/pen) vs poimne (G4167 flock). God's people can be in the wrong fold (Babylon) while belonging to the right flock (Christ). Rev 18:4's come-out call is the shepherd's voice reaching his sheep inside the wrong fold.

While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Context: FA06 apoleia chain. Same word apoleias (G684) for Judas and the beast (Rev 17:8,11).

Notes: ho huios tes apoleias = the son of perdition (apoleia G684). Same word applied to the beast at Rev 17:8,11 'goeth into perdition (apoleian).' Judas typology: the greatest betrayal comes from within the faith community.

Man of sin / son of perdition — mystery of iniquity

Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; ... For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way.

Context: FA05 mysterion chain. FA06 apoleia chain. 'Mystery of iniquity' parallels Rev 17:5 MYSTERY inscription.

Notes: ho huios tes apoleias = the son of perdition — same phrase as John 17:12 (Judas) and linked to Rev 17:8,11 (beast). to mysterion tes anomias = the mystery of lawlessness/iniquity — already at work. Rev 17:5 MYSTERY BABYLON connects to this 'mystery of iniquity' tradition. apostasia (G646 falling away) precedes the revelation of the man of sin.

Jerusalem kills the prophets — blood-guilt accusation

Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and [some] of them ye shall kill and crucify; and [some] of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute [them] from city to city: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, [thou] that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under [her] wings, and ye would not!

Context: FA11 blood of prophets. FA10 Jerusalem identification model evidence. Jesus assigns blood-guilt to Jerusalem specifically.

Notes: hopos elthe eph hymas pan haima dikaion ekchynomenon epi tes ges = that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth. Jesus assigns prophet-killing responsibility specifically to Jerusalem. Rev 18:24 echoes this with 'blood of prophets found in her' but extends the scope universally to 'all that were slain upon the earth.'

Church at Babylon — Babylon as cipher for Rome

The [church that is] at Babylon, elected together with [you], saluteth you; and [so doth] Marcus my son.

Context: FA10 Rome identification evidence. 1 Peter uses 'Babylon' as cipher for Rome — establishes first-century precedent for symbolic use.

Notes: he en Babyloni syneklekte = the co-chosen/elect one in Babylon. Most scholars interpret this as a cipher for Rome. Establishes that 'Babylon' was already being used symbolically by Peter's time.

Jews killed the Lord and prophets — Jerusalem's persecution

For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they [have] of the Jews: Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

Context: FA10 Jerusalem model evidence. FA11 blood of prophets. Jerusalem-based persecution of the church.

Notes: ton kai ton Kyrion apokteinanton Iesoun kai tous idious prophetas = who also killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets. Assigns prophet-killing to the Jews/Jerusalem establishment. Supports the Jerusalem model for Babylon, but Rev 18:24 extends scope beyond Jerusalem.

Two Jerusalems: earthly bondage vs heavenly freedom

For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Context: FA01 two-city typology. Present Jerusalem in bondage vs Jerusalem above. Possible background for Babylon-bride antithesis.

Notes: he nun Ierousalem douleuei meta ton teknon autes = the present Jerusalem is enslaved with her children. he de ano Ierousalem eleuthera estin hetis estin meter hemon = but the Jerusalem above is free, which is our mother. Paul's two-Jerusalems typology may provide the theological framework for Revelation's Babylon-New Jerusalem antithesis.

Israel slew their own prophets

In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

Context: FA11 prophet-killing within the covenant community.

Notes: charbekhem akhelah neviy'eykhem = your sword devoured your prophets. Prophet-killing is an activity of the covenant community against its own messengers.

They slew thy prophets who testified against them

Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

Context: FA11 prophet-killing pattern. Israel's own prophets killed.

Notes: wenevi'eykha haregh asher-he'idu vahem leheshivam elekha = they killed your prophets who testified against them to turn them back to you. Prophet-killing is a pattern of the covenant community.

Permanent desolation — Babylon like Sodom and Gomorrah

Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell [there], and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour [cities] thereof, saith the LORD; [so] shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.

Context: FA02 permanent desolation oracle. Rev 18:2 katoiketerion daimonion echoes this.

Notes: Babylon's desolation compared to Sodom and Gomorrah. lo'-teshev lanetsach = it shall not be inhabited forever. Rev 18:2's 'habitation of demons' transforms this to spiritual desolation.

Great mountain becomes a plain before Zerubbabel

Who [art] thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel [thou shalt become] a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone [thereof with] shoutings, [crying], Grace, grace unto it.

Context: FA06 mountain = kingdom/obstacle in prophetic imagery.

Notes: mi-atah har-haggadol = who are you, O great mountain? Mountain used metaphorically for an obstacle/kingdom that will be leveled before Zerubbabel. Supports the kingdom reading of mountains in prophetic literature.

Mountain of the LORD's house established above all mountains

And it shall come to pass in the last days, [that] the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

Context: FA06 mountain = kingdom/authority in prophetic imagery.

Notes: har beyt-YHWH = mountain of the LORD's house. Mountains used for kingdoms/centers of authority. The LORD's mountain will be supreme above all others. Supports reading oros at Rev 17:9 as kingdoms rather than geographic hills.

Expanded fall announcement with egeneto progressive deterioration

Revelation 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. Revelation 18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
