Question

How do the numbers 12 (and its multiples: 24 elders, 144 cubits, 12,000 stadia, 144,000 sealed) and 4 (living creatures, horsemen, angels at corners, winds, universal formulas like 'every kindred, tongue, people, and nation') function as structural and symbolic numbers in Revelation? Document every occurrence of each number. Does 12 consistently represent God's people and 4 represent creation/universality? How do these secondary numbers relate to the primary structural number 7?

Throne room introduction: 24 elders, 4 living creatures, 7 spirits

After this I looked, and, behold, a door [was] opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard [was] as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and [there was] a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne [were] four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne [there was] a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast [was] like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast [was] like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Context: The heavenly throne room vision (Rev 4). First appearance of the 24 elders (eikosi tessares presbyteroi) on 24 thrones with gold crowns, and the four living creatures (tessara zoa) with distinct faces. Seven lamps = seven spirits complete the numerical triad (7, 24=2x12, 4). Creation worship context (4:11).

Notes: This is the foundational passage where all three numbers converge: 7 spirits (4:5), 24 elders (4:4), 4 living creatures (4:6-8). The worship is directed to the Creator (4:11), connecting the four creation-representing creatures to creation theology.

Lamb worship: tribal identity meets sevenfold completeness; first fourfold formula

And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four [and] twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

Context: The Lamb receives the sealed scroll. 5:5 introduces tribal identity (Lion of tribe of Judah = 12). 5:6 has seven horns and seven eyes (sevenfold attributes). 5:8 has four creatures and 24 elders worshipping. 5:9 contains the first fourfold formula: ek pases phyles kai glosses kai laou kai ethnous (order: tribe, tongue, people, nation = 1234 in Bauckham numbering). 5:12 contains the sevenfold doxology: power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, blessing.

Notes: Key verse for numerical interaction: the Lamb has 7 horns and 7 eyes (5:6), is from 1 of the 12 tribes (5:5), is worshipped by 4 creatures and 24 elders (5:8), redeemed from the fourfold universal formula (5:9), and receives sevenfold praise (5:12). The 5:9 textual variant is critical: KJV reads 'redeemed us' (hemas), but many manuscripts read 'redeemed them/people' (autous). This affects whether the elders identify as redeemed humans.

Four horsemen: four creatures summon four riders with fourfold killing means

And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse [that was] red: and [power] was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and [see] thou hurt not the oil and the wine. And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Context: First four seals opened. Each of the four living creatures introduces one horseman by ordinal correspondence. The fourth horseman concentrates the number 4: fourth seal, fourth creature, fourth fraction (1/4 of earth), fourfold killing means (sword, hunger, death, beasts). The 1/4 fraction represents limitation, not universality — placing it within the escalation: 1/4 (seals) to 1/3 (trumpets) to total (bowls).

Notes: The four living creatures function as agents introducing judgment (not just worshippers). The fourfold killing means (sword, hunger, death, beasts) echo Eze 14:21's four sore judgments. After the fourth seal, the pattern breaks: seals 5-7 have entirely different formats (no creatures, no horses), creating the 4+3 subdivision.

Four angels at four corners holding four winds: densest NT concentration of tessares

And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

Context: Rev 7:1 contains tessares three times in a single verse — the densest concentration of 'four' in the entire NT. Four angels at four corners holding four winds creates a triple-four structure emphasizing universal geographic scope. The sealing of God's servants precedes the judgment the four angels will release.

Notes: Greek parsing confirms: tessaras aggelous (four angels, acc pl), tessaras gonias (four corners, acc pl), tessaras anemous (four winds, acc pl). OT background: Zec 6:5 (four chariots going to four winds), Jer 49:36 (four winds from four quarters), Job 1:19 (wind from four corners).

144,000 sealed: 12,000 from each of 12 tribes — anomalous tribal list

And I heard the number of them which were sealed: [and there were] sealed an hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Juda [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Aser [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zabulon [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin [were] sealed twelve thousand.

Context: The mathematical structure: 144,000 = 12 x 12 x 1000. Greek construction: hekaton tesserakonta tessares chiliades = 'one hundred forty-four thousands' (plural chiliades, NPF). The tribal list is anomalous: Judah first (not Reuben), Dan absent, Levi included (normally non-territorial), Manasseh alongside Joseph (normally Joseph covers both Ephraim and Manasseh). Equal 12,000 per tribe reinforces symbolic rather than demographic function.

Notes: The parsing confirms chiliades is nominative plural feminine (NPF) — a substantive noun meaning 'thousand-groups,' not a cardinal adjective. This supports Bohr's claim that the emphasis is on '144 groups of one thousand' rather than a conglomerate number. The hear/see pattern: John HEARS the number 144,000 (7:4) then SEES a great multitude no man can number (7:9), paralleling the hear Lion / see Lamb pattern in 5:5-6.

Great multitude from every nation: second fourfold formula with sevenfold doxology

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and [about] the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Context: 7:9 contains the second fourfold formula: ek pantos ethnous kai phylon kai laon kai glosson (order: nation, tribe, people, tongue = 4132 in Bauckham numbering — different from 5:9's 1234). 7:11 has angels, elders, and four creatures worshipping together. 7:12 contains a sevenfold doxology: blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honour, power, might.

Notes: The fourfold formula order changes from 5:9 (phyle, glossa, laos, ethnos = 1234) to 7:9 (ethnos, phyle, laos, glossa = 4132). This is not random variation — Bauckham argues the orderings create intentional connections between passages. The sevenfold doxology in 7:12 fuses 4 and 7 in the same worship scene.

Four angels bound at Euphrates: fourfold angelic grouping in judgment

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

Context: A second grouping of four angels (distinct from Rev 7:1). These four are bound and released for judgment. The four horns of the altar (9:13) plus the four angels (9:14-15) create a double-four pattern. The 1/3 fraction (trumpets) escalates from the 1/4 of the seals.

Notes: The four angels at the Euphrates are distinct from the four at the corners (7:1). Both groups are associated with universal judgment scope. The progression from four horns to four angels maintains the fourfold structure within the trumpet series.

Third fourfold formula: kings replace tribes

And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

Context: Third occurrence of the fourfold formula, with a substitution: basileusin (kings, G935) replaces phyle (tribe). Order: laos, ethnos, glossa, basileus = 3, 4, 2, X in Bauckham numbering. The preposition epi (before/about) rather than ek (out of) as in 5:9.

Notes: Greek parsing confirms: laois (dat pl) kai ethnesin (dat pl) kai glossais (dat pl) kai basileusin (dat pl). The substitution of kings for tribes is structurally significant — it maintains the fourfold structure while adding political dimension.

Fourth fourfold formula: peoples, kindreds, tongues, nations see the witnesses

And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

Context: Fourth occurrence: laon kai phylon kai glosson kai ethnon = people, tribe, tongue, nation = 3124 in Bauckham numbering. Uses ek + genitive partitive construction. The universal formula appears in a negative context — the nations gloat over the dead witnesses.

Notes: This is the first fourfold formula passage where the formula appears in a hostile context — the peoples/kindreds/tongues/nations refuse burial to the two witnesses. The formula still denotes universality but in a negative direction.

Fifth fourfold formula: beast authority OVER — antithetical to 5:9's EK

And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

Context: Fifth occurrence: epi pasan phylen kai laon kai glossan kai ethnos = tribe, people, tongue, nation = 1324 in Bauckham numbering. Critical observation: the preposition is epi (over/upon), contrasting with 5:9's ek (out of). The Lamb redeems OUT OF; the beast has authority OVER. Same formula, antithetical prepositions.

Notes: Greek parsing confirms: epi pasan phylen (acc sg) kai laon (acc sg) kai glossan (acc sg) kai ethnos (acc sg). Note the shift from plural genitives in some passages to accusative singulars here. The antithetical parallel with 5:9 is structurally significant: ek (redemption) vs epi (domination) over the same fourfold humanity.

144,000 with Lamb on Zion: connects all three number groups (12x12x1000, 24, 4)

And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, [being] the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Context: The 144,000 sing before (enopion) the throne, the four creatures, and the elders — bringing together all three number groups: 144,000 (12x12x1000), four creatures, and the (implied 24) elders. The Greek parsing of 14:3 confirms enopion + genitive for the prepositional relationship.

Notes: Parsing confirms: enopion ton tessaron zoon (before the four living creatures, gen pl) kai ton presbyteron (and the elders, gen pl). The 144,000 is described as hekaton tesserakonta tessares chiliades (same construction as 7:4). This passage connects the 12-pattern (144,000) with the 4-pattern (creatures) and the 24 (elders) in one scene.

Sixth fourfold formula: everlasting gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, people

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

Context: Sixth occurrence: epi pan ethnos kai phylen kai glossan kai laon = nation, tribe, tongue, people = 4123 in Bauckham numbering. The angel proclaims the gospel to universal humanity. Order begins like 7:9 (ethnos first) but reverses the final two terms (glossan-laon vs laon-glosson).

Notes: Greek confirms: epi pan ethnos (acc sg) kai phylen (acc sg) kai glossan (acc sg) kai laon (acc sg). Uses epi like 13:7, but in a redemptive context (gospel preaching) vs 13:7's domination. This creates a complex pattern: ek (5:9, redemptive), epi (13:7, domination), epi (14:6, redemptive proclamation).

Four living creatures give seven golden vials: direct 4-distributes-7 interaction

And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

Context: This verse contains the most direct numerical interaction between 4 and 7 in Revelation: the four living creatures distribute the seven vials of wrath. The number 4 (creation representatives) mediates the number 7 (complete divine judgment).

Notes: Structurally significant: the four creatures serve as agents distributing the seven bowls, demonstrating that 4 and 7 interact functionally, not just symbolically. The creatures who represent creation deliver creation-affecting judgments.

Seventh fourfold formula: multitudes replace tongues

And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Context: Seventh and final occurrence: laoi kai ochloi kai ethne kai glossai = people, multitude, nation, tongue = 3Y42 in Bauckham numbering (where Y = ochlos/multitudes replacing phyle/tribes). The negative context: these waters = nations supporting Babylon.

Notes: Greek confirms: laoi (nom pl) kai ochloi (nom pl, G3793) eisin kai ethne (nom pl) kai glossai (nom pl). The substitution of ochloi (multitudes) for phylai (tribes) is the second substitution in the series (cf. 10:11 basileusin for phylai). Both substitutions maintain the fourfold structure while varying the components.

Seventh joint appearance of elders and living creatures

And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

Context: This is claimed to be the seventh joint appearance of the 24 elders and four living creatures (Kuykendall's claim: 5:6, 5:8, 5:11, 5:14, 7:11, 14:3, 19:4). If verified, this means the 24+4 worship pair appears exactly seven times — another 7 intersection.

Notes: Verification of the seven joint appearances: (1) 5:6 — Lamb in midst of throne, four creatures, and elders; (2) 5:8 — four creatures and 24 elders fall before Lamb; (3) 5:11 — angels around throne + creatures + elders; (4) 5:14 — four creatures say Amen, elders fall down; (5) 7:11 — angels, elders, four creatures worship; (6) 14:3 — 144,000 sing before four creatures and elders; (7) 19:4 — 24 elders and four creatures worship. Count confirmed: 7 joint appearances.

Four quarters of the earth: universality in eschatological judgment

And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom [is] as the sand of the sea.

Context: Post-millennial deception from the four quarters (tessaras gonias) of the earth. The same 'four corners' language as 7:1, bookending the trumpet-bowl sequence. Four denotes the entirety of the earth's geography.

Notes: This is the final use of tessares in a corners/directions context in Revelation. The pairing of 7:1 (before the seals interlude) and 20:8 (after the millennium) creates an inclusio of universal geographic scope marked by the number four.

New Jerusalem: maximum dodeka density — three occurrences per verse

And had a wall great and high, [and] had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are [the names] of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Context: Rev 21:12 contains dodeka three times in one verse: twelve gates, twelve angels, twelve tribes. Rev 21:14 also contains dodeka three times: twelve foundations, twelve names, twelve apostles. This is the densest concentration of 12 in the entire NT. The OT-NT architectural union: gates carry OT tribal names, foundations carry NT apostle names.

Notes: Greek parsing confirms three instances of dodeka (G1427, A-NUI) in 21:12 and three in 21:14. The OT background is Eze 48:31-34 which also names gates after the twelve tribes. The structural point: the city is built ON apostolic witness (foundations) and entered THROUGH Israelite identity (gates), fusing OT and NT people of God.

City measurements: 12,000 stadia (cubic) and 144 cubits wall

And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred [and] forty [and] four cubits, [according to] the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

Context: 12,000 stadia per side = 12 x 1,000. The city is a perfect cube (length = breadth = height), paralleling the cubic Holy of Holies in 1 Ki 6:20 (20 cubits per side). 144 cubits = 12 x 12. The closed mathematical system: every multiple uses only 12 and 1,000 as factors.

Notes: The foursquare (tetragōnos, G5068) description of the city introduces the number 4 into the 12-saturated architecture. The cube has equal dimensions — a geometric expression of perfection/completeness.

12 foundations with 12 precious stones; 12 gates are 12 pearls

And the foundations of the wall of the city [were] garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation [was] jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates [were] twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city [was] pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

Context: Twelve foundations each with a distinct precious stone (paralleling the high priest's breastplate in Exo 28:17-20 which had 12 stones for 12 tribes). Twelve gates are twelve individual pearls. Complete saturation of the number 12 in city architecture.

Notes: The twelve precious stones echo the twelve stones on the high priest's breastplate (Exo 28:17-20), reinforcing the priestly-people-of-God symbolism of the number 12.

Tree of life bearing 12 fruits monthly: the only temporal use of 12

In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, [was there] the tree of life, which bare twelve [manner of] fruits, [and] yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree [were] for the healing of the nations.

Context: The only instance of 12 connected to temporal cycle rather than identity or architecture. Twelve fruits yielded monthly — 12 months, 12 kinds of fruit. The healing of the nations introduces the universal scope (nations = ethnon) alongside the 12-structure.

Notes: This is the one Revelation use of 12 that is not directly about God's people or sacred architecture — it describes a temporal cycle (monthly fruit). However, it still occurs within the New Jerusalem (people-of-God context), so even this use is embedded in the 12-people framework.

Crown of twelve stars on the woman: 12 as identity marker

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

Context: The woman's stephanos (crown, G4735) has twelve stars — identifying her with the twelve tribes. This connects the 12 of the tribal structure to the broader narrative of God's people under persecution (Rev 12).

Notes: Greek confirms: stephanos asteron dodeka (crown of twelve stars). The twelve stars identify the woman as representing God's people (cf. Joseph's dream, Gen 37:9 where sun, moon, and eleven stars = his family). This is an identity marker, not an architectural measurement — 12 functions the same way in both contexts.

First four trumpets: 1/3 destruction of specific domains — 4+3 subdivision

The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

Context: The first four trumpets affect specific domains: earth (8:7), sea (8:8-9), rivers/waters (8:10-11), celestial bodies (8:12). Each destroys 1/3 (escalating from 1/4 in seals). After the fourth trumpet, the woe-eagle in 8:13 explicitly divides the last three from the first four.

Notes: The 4+3 subdivision: first four trumpets target the natural world (earth, sea, rivers, sun/moon/stars), last three are 'woe' trumpets targeting humanity more directly. Rev 8:13 explicitly marks the boundary: 'Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels.' The four domains echo creation categories.

Woe-eagle: explicit literary marker dividing first four from last three trumpets

And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

Context: This verse explicitly divides the seven trumpets into 4 + 3. The eagle (or angel, depending on manuscript) announces three woes for the remaining three trumpets, marking the first four as a completed structural unit.

Notes: This is the strongest evidence for the 4+3 subdivision being intentional rather than incidental. The text itself marks the boundary between the first four and last three.

OT background: Ezekiel's city gates named for 12 tribes

And the gates of the city [shall be] after the names of the tribes of Israel: three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi. And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan. And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures: and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun. At the west side four thousand and five hundred, [with] their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali.

Context: Ezekiel's vision of the restored city has gates named after the twelve tribes — the direct OT background for Rev 21:12. Unlike Rev 7:5-8, Ezekiel's list includes Dan and excludes Manasseh (Joseph covers both Ephraim and Manasseh). Three gates on each of four sides = 12 total, organizing by fours.

Notes: Comparison of tribal lists: Eze 48 includes Dan (which Rev 7 omits) and excludes Manasseh (which Rev 7 includes alongside Joseph). This divergence argues against a simple literal reading of Rev 7's list.

OT background: Ezekiel's four living creatures (cherubim) with four faces

Passage too long to include in full. Key: v.5 'the likeness of four living creatures'; v.6 'every one had four faces, and every one had four wings'; v.10 'they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.'

Context: Primary OT source for Rev 4:6-8's four living creatures. Ezekiel's creatures each have four faces (man, lion, ox, eagle) and four wings. Revelation simplifies: each creature has one face (lion, calf, man, eagle — same categories but redistributed) and six wings (borrowed from Isaiah's seraphim).

Notes: The four faces represent categories of animate creation: lion=wild animals, ox/calf=domestic animals, man=humanity, eagle=birds. This connects 4 to creation categories, reinforced by Rev 4:11's creation worship.

OT background: seraphim with six wings and trisagion

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of his glory.

Context: Source for Rev 4:8's six wings and 'Holy, holy, holy' trisagion. Revelation's living creatures combine Ezekiel's four faces (cherubim) with Isaiah's six wings and trisagion (seraphim). The number 6 wings per creature is from Isaiah, not Ezekiel (who has 4 wings per creature).

Notes: The fusion of cherubim (Eze 1) and seraphim (Isa 6) features in the four living creatures is a deliberate literary construction, combining the guardian/throne function of cherubim with the worship function of seraphim.

OT background: Holy of Holies as perfect cube — precursor to New Jerusalem

And the oracle in the forepart [was] twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and [so] covered the altar [which was of] cedar.

Context: The Holy of Holies in Solomon's temple was a perfect cube: 20 x 20 x 20 cubits. The New Jerusalem (12,000 x 12,000 x 12,000 stadia) is also a perfect cube — the expanded, ultimate Holy of Holies. The entire city functions as the sacred space where God dwells with humanity.

Notes: The parallel: the innermost sanctuary (where God's presence dwelt most intensely) was cubic. The New Jerusalem being cubic means the entire city is the Most Holy Place — God's dwelling is no longer restricted but fills the whole city.

OT background: 24 priestly courses established by David

Now [these are] the divisions of the sons of Aaron... Thus were they divided by lot... the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, [continuing through all 24 divisions]... The four and twentieth to Maaziah. These [were] the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD.

Context: David organized the priests into 24 courses (shifts) for temple service. The 24 divisions rotated through the year (Luke 1:5-9 confirms this was still operative in NT times with Zechariah serving in the course of Abijah, the 8th course). This is a primary OT background for the 24 elders in Revelation — 24 priestly representatives before God's throne.

Notes: The 24 priestly courses provide the strongest OT structural background for the 24 elders. However, 24 could also derive from 12 tribes + 12 apostles. The text of Revelation never explains the number; it simply presents 24 elders as a given.

LORD reigns before his elders: potential OT background for heavenly elders

Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

Context: KJV translates zaqenayv as 'his ancients' (= his elders). The Hebrew parsing confirms zeqenayv = adjective masculine plural absolute + 3ms suffix from zaqen (H2205, 'old/elder'). This describes YHWH reigning before 'his elders' in Zion — a potential OT parallel to the heavenly elders before God's throne in Revelation.

Notes: Hebrew parsing: zeqenayv (zaqen, adj.mp.abs + 3ms suffix) = 'his elders/old ones.' The LXX renders this with presbyteroi (the same word used in Revelation). Whether these are human elders (Israelite leaders) or heavenly elders is debated. The cosmic context (moon confounded, sun ashamed) suggests a heavenly/eschatological setting.

Kingdom of priests and holy nation: OT source for Rev 5:10 kings-and-priests identity

And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Context: The foundational OT text for the people-of-God as priestly kingdom. Rev 5:10 echoes this: 'hast made us unto our God kings and priests.' The twelve-tribe structure of Israel is inseparable from this priestly identity.

Notes: Connects the 12-tribe structure to the priestly-kingly identity that Revelation assigns to the redeemed. The 24 elders, wearing crowns and worshipping at the throne, embody this priestly-kingly role.

Dragon with seven heads: 7 in demonic parody (contrast: 12 never demonic)

And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

Context: Seven heads and seven crowns on the dragon — the number 7 serving demonic symbolism. Compare: 12 stars on the woman (12:1) represent God's people, while 7 heads on the dragon parody divine authority. This supports Kuykendall's claim that 12 is exclusively positive while 7 can serve both divine and demonic.

Notes: Demonic uses of 7: seven heads on dragon (12:3), seven heads on beast (13:1, 17:3,7), seven mountains (17:9), seven kings (17:10). No comparable demonic use of 12 exists in Revelation.

Beast with seven heads: 7 continues in demonic context

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

Context: The sea beast also has seven heads — the same number as the dragon. The number 7 is shared between divine and demonic entities, while 12 and its multiples appear only in contexts associated with God's people, the Lamb, or sacred architecture.

Notes: Testing Kuykendall's claim: 7 appears in both divine contexts (seven spirits, seven churches, seven seals) and demonic (seven heads on dragon and beast, seven mountains). 12 never appears in demonic contexts. 4 appears mostly in neutral/positive contexts but 1/4 in 6:8 could be considered judgment-related.

OT threefold formula: peoples, nations, languages — expanded to fourfold in Revelation

Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,

Context: Daniel's threefold universal formula (people, nations, languages) appears multiple times in Daniel (3:4,7; 5:19; 6:25; 7:14). Revelation expands this to fourfold by adding phyle (tribe/kindred), transforming 3 to 4 — itself evidence that Revelation associates 4 with completeness.

Notes: The expansion from Daniel's threefold to Revelation's fourfold formula is structurally significant. Adding the fourth term (phyle) transforms the formula into one that matches Revelation's 4-symbolism.

OT threefold formula: all people, nations, languages serve the Son of Man

And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.

Context: The eschatological threefold formula applied to the Son of Man's universal dominion. Revelation's fourfold formula in similar contexts (all nations/kindreds/tongues/peoples before the Lamb) expands Daniel's vision.

Notes: The connection between Dan 7:14 and Rev 5:9 is direct: both describe universal dominion received by a messianic figure, using a universal formula for all humanity.

Twelve apostles on twelve thrones judging twelve tribes

And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Context: Triple use of twelve: twelve apostles, twelve thrones, twelve tribes. This NT text explicitly connects the twelve apostles to the twelve tribal structure, providing the basis for the 12+12 interpretation of the 24 elders (12 tribes + 12 apostles).

Notes: This verse, combined with Rev 21:12-14 (gates with tribal names + foundations with apostle names), forms the strongest biblical basis for 24 = 12 + 12.

Our twelve tribes (dodekaphylon): sole NT use of the compound word

Unto which [promise] our twelve tribes, instantly serving [God] day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.

Context: The only NT occurrence of dodekaphylon (G1429) — a compound word fusing dodeka and phylon into a single term. Paul treats the twelve-tribe nation as one indivisible body sharing one hope.

Notes: The compound form dodekaphylon emphasizes corporate unity: not twelve separate groups but one nation-entity. This supports Bohr's claim that 12 represents the whole people of God as a unified body.

Sevenfold doxology to the Lamb: power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, blessing

Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

Context: Exactly seven items of praise: (1) dynamis (power), (2) ploutos (riches), (3) sophia (wisdom), (4) ischys (strength), (5) time (honour), (6) doxa (glory), (7) eulogia (blessing). Sung before the 24 elders and four creatures — 7 attributes in the presence of 24 and 4.

Notes: Greek parsing confirms exactly seven nouns in accusative case: ten dynamin kai plouton kai sophian kai ischyn kai timen kai doxan kai eulogian. This sevenfold praise is sung in the context of 4 creatures + 24 elders, fusing all three numbers.

Second sevenfold doxology: blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honour, power, might

Amen.

Context: Seven items of praise: (1) eulogia (blessing), (2) doxa (glory), (3) sophia (wisdom), (4) eucharistia (thanksgiving), (5) time (honour), (6) dynamis (power), (7) ischys (might). Sung by angels, elders, and four creatures together. Similar to 5:12 but with variations (thanksgiving replaces riches).

Notes: Both doxologies (5:12 and 7:12) contain exactly seven items. The worship context involves all three number groups: angels (unnumbered), four creatures, 24 elders. The sevenfold praise is structurally consistent.

Saints raised at Christ's resurrection: Haskell/Smith basis for 24 elders identification

And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Context: Haskell and Smith (SDA commentators) identify the 24 elders as these resurrected saints who ascended with Christ (cf. Eph 4:8). This is a denominational interpretation requiring verification against the text of Rev 4-5.

Notes: The text says 'many bodies' without specifying a number. The identification of these resurrected saints with the 24 elders is an inference, not a direct textual connection. The Rev 5:9 textual variant (hemeis 'us' vs autous 'them') is relevant to whether the elders identify as redeemed humans.

First four bowls: earth, sea, rivers, sun — parallel to first four trumpets

And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth... And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea... And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters... And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun...

Context: The first four bowls target the same domains as the first four trumpets: earth, sea, rivers, sun. But the destruction is now total (not 1/3). This confirms the 4+3 pattern across all three judgment series and the fraction escalation: 1/4 (seals) → 1/3 (trumpets) → total (bowls).

Notes: The parallel between trumpets 1-4 and bowls 1-4 targeting the same domains reinforces the structural significance of the number 4 as a division within the sevens.

24 elders on 24 thrones with gold crowns

And round about the throne [were] four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

Context: First appearance of the 24 (2x12) elders. They sit on thrones, wear white raiment and gold crowns (stephanous chrysous).

Notes: Eikosi tessares appears twice: for thrones and for elders. Greek parsing confirms presbyterous (G4245) and stephanous (G4735).

Four living creatures: distinct faces, six wings, trisagion

And before the throne [there was] a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast [was] like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast [was] like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Context: Four living creatures introduced with distinct faces (lion, calf, man, eagle) representing four categories of animate creation. Six wings from Isa 6 seraphim, four faces from Eze 1 cherubim.

Notes: tessara zoa (G2226) — four living creatures. The trisagion (Holy holy holy) comes from Isa 6:3 via the seraphim.

24 elders cast crowns and worship Creator

The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Context: Elders cast their crowns (stephanos) before the throne — derived authority returned to its source. Creation worship context connects the four living creatures to creation theology.

Notes: The creation worship (4:11) provides the theological basis for interpreting the four creatures as creation representatives.

Lion of Judah / Lamb with seven horns and seven eyes

And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

Context: Tribal identity (Lion of Judah = 12-system) meets sevenfold completeness (seven horns and eyes). The hear/see pattern: hear Lion, see Lamb.

Notes: This is the paradigmatic hear/see pattern later replicated in 7:4/7:9 (hear 144,000, see great multitude).

Four creatures and 24 elders worship Lamb; first fourfold formula

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Context: Four creatures + 24 elders together (second joint appearance). 5:9 contains the first fourfold formula (ek pases phyles kai glosses kai laou kai ethnous = 1234). Textual variant: KJV 'redeemed us' vs manuscripts reading 'redeemed them/people.'

Notes: The textual variant at 5:9 (hemas 'us' vs autous 'them') is critical for whether the elders self-identify as redeemed humans or describe others' redemption.

Sevenfold doxology; four creatures say Amen

Context: 5:12 has the sevenfold doxology (power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, blessing). 5:14 has the fourth joint appearance of four creatures and elders.

Notes: Seven doxology items confirmed by Greek parsing of 5:12.

Great multitude from every nation: second fourfold formula

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

Context: Hear/see pattern continued from 7:4: John heard the number 144,000, now sees a great multitude. Second fourfold formula: ek pantos ethnous kai phylon kai laon kai glosson = 4132.

Notes: The order change from 5:9 (1234) to 7:9 (4132) is intentional per Bauckham.

144,000 on Zion singing before four creatures and elders

And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

Context: All three number groups converge: 144,000 (12x12x1000), four creatures, and 24 elders. Greek enopion confirms the prepositional relationship: the 144,000 sing before the creatures and elders.

Notes: Parsing of 14:3 confirms enopion ton tessaron zoon kai ton presbyteron.

Fourth horseman: 1/4 of earth, fourfold killing means

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Context: The fourth seal concentrates the number 4: fourth seal, fourth creature, fourth fraction (1/4), fourfold killing means (sword, hunger, death, beasts). The 1/4 fraction represents limitation within the escalation to 1/3 (trumpets) to total (bowls).

Notes: The fourfold killing means echo Eze 14:21's four sore judgments (sword, famine, beasts, pestilence).

First fourfold formula: redeemed EK every kindred, tongue, people, nation

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

Context: First occurrence of the fourfold universal formula: ek pases phyles kai glosses kai laou kai ethnous (order 1234 in Bauckham numbering). Preposition ek (out of) denotes redemptive extraction.

Notes: Greek parsing confirmed: all four terms in genitive singular. The ek preposition creates the antithetical parallel with Rev 13:7's epi.

Fifth trumpet begins: literary marker dividing first four from last three

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

Context: After the woe-eagle of 8:13 divides the first four trumpets from the last three, the fifth trumpet (first woe) begins a qualitatively different type of judgment — demonic rather than natural.

Notes: The fifth trumpet marks the transition from the 4-group (natural world judgments) to the 3-group (woe judgments), confirming the 4+3 subdivision.

Jacob blesses 12 sons/tribes: foundational OT 12-tribe structure

And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together... All these [are] the twelve tribes of Israel: and this [is it] that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.

Context: The foundational OT text establishing the twelve-tribe structure. Gen 49:28 explicitly states 'these are the twelve tribes of Israel,' defining the organizational unit that Revelation inherits.

Notes: The standard tribal order includes all twelve sons of Jacob. Rev 7:5-8 modifies this list significantly (Dan omitted, Levi included, Judah first).

Census of 12 tribes: 12 as organizational structure for God's people

And the children of Reuben, Israel's eldest son... Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

Context: The first census of Israel organized by twelve tribes. Each tribe is counted separately, establishing the twelve-fold organizational pattern. The equal 12,000 per tribe in Rev 7 contrasts with the unequal historical numbers here.

Notes: The historical tribal censuses had vastly unequal numbers; Revelation's equal 12,000 per tribe emphasizes symbolic completeness over demographic reality.

Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Context: Haskell/Smith connect this to Matt 27:52-53, arguing that Christ led the resurrected saints to heaven at His ascension, and these became the 24 elders. This is an inference, not a direct textual connection.

Notes: The text does not specify who the 'captivity' is. The connection to the 24 elders requires multiple inferential steps.

Four sore judgments: OT background for Rev 6:8's fourfold killing means

For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

Context: God's four sore judgments (sword, famine, beast, pestilence) provide the direct OT background for the fourth horseman's fourfold killing means (sword, hunger, death, beasts of the earth). Both texts use four as the number of comprehensive judgment.

Notes: The correspondence between Eze 14:21 and Rev 6:8 confirms that four represents comprehensive scope of judgment in the OT tradition that Revelation inherits.

Four chariots going to four winds: OT four-winds imagery

And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains [were] mountains of brass... And the angel answered and said unto me, These [are] the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

Context: Four chariots with four colors of horses going to the four winds/spirits of heaven. Direct OT parallel to Rev 7:1's four angels at four corners holding four winds.

Notes: The parallel tool confirmed Zec 6:5 as the top OT match for Rev 7:1 (hybrid score 0.423).

Four winds from four quarters: OT universal-judgment formula

And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

Context: Four winds from four quarters used for universal judgment scope. This is the OT precedent for Revelation's use of four winds and four corners to denote geographic totality.

Notes: The phrase 'four winds from four quarters of heaven' is the exact OT template for Rev 7:1's 'four winds of the earth.'

Seven golden lampstands and seven stars: heptadic framework

And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;... And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength.

Context: The opening vision establishes seven as the primary structural number: seven lampstands (= seven churches, 1:20) and seven stars (= seven angels of the churches). This is the baseline against which 12 and 4 operate as secondary numbers.

Notes: The seven lampstands and seven stars establish the heptadic framework from the very first vision.

Seven angels with seven trumpets: septenary series that divides 4+3

And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

Context: Introduction of the seven-trumpet series, which will demonstrate the 4+3 subdivision: first four trumpets affect natural domains (earth, sea, rivers, sun), last three are 'woe' trumpets.

Notes: The seven trumpets are the clearest example of the 4+3 subdivision, with Rev 8:13's woe-eagle explicitly marking the boundary.

God's council of holy ones: potential background for heavenly elder council

God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all [them that are] about him.

Context: Describes God in the 'assembly of the saints' (or 'council of holy ones'), with beings around him who revere him. This provides a potential OT background for the heavenly council of 24 elders around God's throne.

Notes: The Hebrew sod-qedoshim ('council of holy ones') could refer to angelic beings, supporting the angelic interpretation of the 24 elders.

First four bowls: earth, sea, rivers, sun — parallel to first four trumpets

And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth... the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea... the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters... the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun...

Context: The first four bowls target the same domains as the first four trumpets (earth, sea, rivers, sun), but with total rather than 1/3 destruction. This confirms the 4+3 pattern across all three judgment series.

Notes: Fraction escalation confirmed: 1/4 (seals) to 1/3 (trumpets) to total (bowls). The first four bowls as a group parallel the first four trumpets.

Thrones, dominions, principalities, powers: angelic throne imagery

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Context: Mentions angelic 'thrones' among the categories of created beings. Relevant to the debate about whether the 24 elders are angelic beings occupying thrones rather than redeemed humans.

Notes: The existence of angelic 'thrones' (thronoi) in the heavenly hierarchy is relevant to whether the 24 elders on thrones could be angelic rather than human.
