Question¶
How does the throne room vision of Revelation 4-5 function as the structural anchor for the entire book? What sanctuary furniture, worship elements, and throne-room language recur throughout the book, and how do these recurrences connect later passages back to this foundational scene? Use the sanctuary blueprint from Exodus 25-40 to identify which compartment each piece of furniture belongs to. How does the throne room establish the context for the seals, trumpets, and bowls? What is the structural relationship between the throne room and the final vision of New Jerusalem (Rev 21-22)?
Complete throne room vision — foundational scene¶
After this I looked, and, behold, a door [was] opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard [was] as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and [there was] a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne [were] four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne [there was] a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast [was] like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast [was] like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Context: Second en pneumati vision opens. John is transported to the heavenly throne room through a door opened in heaven. This is the strongest structural boundary in Revelation — the only point where meta tauta eidon and en pneumati co-occur (revs2-01). The scene establishes all primary throne-room entities: throne, one seated, 24 elders, living creatures, seven lamps = seven Spirits, sea of glass, and the Sinai-theophany formula (4:5).
Notes: Thronos appears ~10 times in these 11 verses, establishing it as the organizing principle. The divine title at 4:8 uses the reordered form: ho en kai ho on kai ho erchomenos (was/is/is-to-come). The trisagion (holy holy holy) derives from Isa 6:3. The four living creatures combine Ezekiel 1 (four faces, eyes) and Isaiah 6 (six wings, trisagion). Parsed: Rev 4:2 (en pneumati egenomēn + thronos ekeiro), Rev 4:5 (ek tou thronou ekporeuontai astrapai kai phonai kai brontai + hepta lampades pyros), Rev 4:8 (trisagion + divine title full form reordered).
Sealed scroll, Lamb introduction, expanding worship¶
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four [and] twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
Context: Continuation of the throne room vision. The sealed scroll in God's right hand triggers the Lamb's introduction. Arnion (G721) first appears at 5:6 with three defining participles. The vessel transformation arc originates at 5:8 (phialas chrysas gemousas thymiamatōn). Worship expands concentrically: living creatures + elders (5:8-10) -> angels (5:11-12) -> every creature (5:13). The myriads formula at 5:11 parallels Dan 7:10.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 5:1 (biblion gegrammenon esōthen kai opisthen, katesphragismenon sphragisin hepta — confirms EGW's 'written within and on the backside'). Rev 5:6 (arnion hestēkos [Perf Act Ptcp] hōs esphagmenon [Perf Pass Ptcp] + apestalmenoi [Perf Pass Ptcp] — three perfect participles defining permanent simultaneous states). Rev 5:8 (phialas chrysas gemousas thymiamatōn hai eisin hai proseuchai tōn hagiōn — vessel transformation origin). Lion announced (Gen 49:9) / Lamb appears pattern at 5:5-6.
Isaiah's throne vision — source for trisagion and six-winged creatures¶
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe [is] me! for I am undone; because I [am] a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, [which] he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid [it] upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here [am] I; send me.
Context: Isaiah's inaugural vision in the year of Uzziah's death. The seraphim (six wings, trisagion) contribute to Revelation's living creatures. The smoke-filling (6:4) parallels the glory-filling exclusion pattern (Exo 40:34-35, Rev 15:8).
Notes: Source for Rev 4:8 trisagion (Holy holy holy). Six wings from seraphim adopted for Revelation's living creatures. Isa 6 seraphim have six wings; Ezek 1 cherubim have four wings — Revelation combines both traditions (six wings from Isaiah, four faces from Ezekiel). The coal from the altar (6:6) connects to altar-fire imagery in Rev 8:5.
Ezekiel's throne-chariot — source for four living creatures and crystal firmament¶
And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness [was] about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. Also out of the midst thereof [came] the likeness of four living creatures. And this [was] their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet [were] straight feet; and the sole of their feet [was] like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass. And [they had] the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. Their wings [were] joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. Thus [were] their faces: and their wings [were] stretched upward; two [wings] of every one [were] joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; [and] they turned not when they went. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance [was] like burning coals of fire, [and] like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. The appearance of the wheels and their work [was] like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work [was] as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. When they went, they went upon their four sides: [and] they turned not when they went. As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings [were] full of eyes round about them four. And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither [was their] spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature [was] in the wheels. When those went, [these] went; and when those stood, [these] stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature [was] in the wheels. And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature [was] as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. And under the firmament [were] their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. And there was a voice from the firmament that [was] over their heads, when they stood, [and] had let down their wings. And above the firmament that [was] over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne [was] the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness round about. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
Context: Ezekiel's inaugural vision by the river Chebar. Source for Rev 4:6-8 living creatures (four faces, eyes, throne above firmament). The crystal firmament (1:22) parallels the sea of glass (Rev 4:6). The rainbow (1:28) parallels the rainbow around the throne (Rev 4:3).
Notes: Key differences from Revelation: Ezekiel's creatures each have FOUR faces; Revelation's each have ONE distinct face. Ezekiel has four wings; Revelation has six (from Isaiah). Ezekiel's wheels with eyes become eyes on the creatures themselves in Revelation. The throne above the firmament (1:26) becomes the throne in heaven (Rev 4:2).
Ancient of Days judgment scene — structural template for Rev 4-5¶
I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld [even] till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. I saw in the night visions, and, behold, [one] like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.
Context: Daniel's night vision of the heavenly court. Nine correspondences with Rev 4-5 documented in rev-03: thrones placed, white garments, fire, attendants (myriads formula identical), books/scroll, Son of Man approach, authority transfer, universal worship, judgment framework.
Notes: Dan 7:10 'thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him' is the direct source for Rev 5:11 'ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.' The fiery stream (7:10) parallels the lightnings from the throne (Rev 4:5). Thrones placed (7:9) parallels thrones around the throne (Rev 4:4). Son of Man approach (7:13) parallels Lamb approach (Rev 5:7).
Ark with mercy seat and cherubim — MHP furniture, source for Rev 11:19¶
And they shall make an ark [of] shittim wood: two cubits and a half [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about. And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put [them] in the four corners thereof; and two rings [shall be] in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it. And thou shalt make staves [of] shittim wood, and overlay them with gold. And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it. And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. And thou shalt make a mercy seat [of] pure gold: two cubits and a half [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof. And thou shalt make two cherubims [of] gold, [of] beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: [even] of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the cherubims shall stretch forth [their] wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces [shall look] one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which [are] upon the ark of the testimony, of all [things] which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.
Context: MHP blueprint. The ark + mercy seat + cherubim constitute the furnishings of the Most Holy Place. God communes from between the cherubim (25:22). The living creatures around the throne in Rev 4 parallel the cherubim on the mercy seat. The ark appears in Revelation at 11:19 (kibotos tes diathēkēs).
Notes: Compartment: MOST HOLY PLACE. The cherubim covering the mercy seat (25:20) parallel the living creatures surrounding the throne. God's communication from between the cherubim (25:22) parallels the voice from the throne (Rev 4:5, 16:17).
Table of showbread — HP furniture, needs Revelation verification¶
Thou shalt also make a table [of] shittim wood: two cubits [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about. And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about. And thou shalt make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that [are] on the four feet thereof. Over against the border shall the rings be for places of the staves to bear the table. And thou shalt make the staves [of] shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them. And thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and spoons thereof, and covers thereof, and bowls thereof, to cover withal: [of] pure gold shalt thou make them. And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.
Context: HP blueprint for the table of showbread. Bohr associates this with the seals sequence (Rev 4:1-8:1). The research task is to verify whether artos protheseos or any bread imagery appears in Rev 4-8. No such vocabulary was found in the Greek text of these chapters.
Notes: Compartment: HOLY PLACE. Bohr's claim that showbread corresponds to the seals has no direct textual support — artos protheseos does not appear in Revelation at all. The table is the one major HP furniture item with no clear Revelation counterpart.
Golden lampstand (menorah) — HP furniture, source for lychnia and lampas¶
And thou shalt make a candlestick [of] pure gold: [of] beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side: Three bowls made like unto almonds, [with] a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, [with] a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick. And in the candlestick [shall be] four bowls made like unto almonds, [with] their knops and their flowers. And [there shall be] a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches that proceed out of the candlestick. Their knops and their branches shall be of the same: all it [shall be] one beaten work [of] pure gold. And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, [shall be of] pure gold. [Of] a talent of pure gold shall he make it, with all these vessels. And look that thou make [them] after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.
Context: HP blueprint for the golden lampstand with seven lamps. Source for lychnia (G3087, lampstand at Rev 1:12-13) and lampas (G2985, lamps of fire at Rev 4:5). The pattern shown on the mount (25:40) establishes the earthly-to-heavenly correspondence.
Notes: Compartment: HOLY PLACE. Seven lamps on the lampstand -> seven lampades pyros before the throne (Rev 4:5) = seven Spirits of God. Zechariah 4:2,10 provides the explicit decoder: seven lamps = eyes of the LORD = Spirit.
Bronze altar of burnt offering — Outer Court furniture¶
And thou shalt make an altar [of] shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof [shall be] three cubits. And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass. And thou shalt make his pans to receive his ashes, and his shovels, and his basons, and his fleshhooks, and his firepans: all the vessels thereof thou shalt make [of] brass. And thou shalt make for it a grate of network [of] brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brasen rings in the four corners thereof. And thou shalt put it under the compass of the altar beneath, that the net may be even to the midst of the altar. And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves [of] shittim wood, and overlay them with brass. And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it. Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall they make [it].
Context: Outer Court blueprint for the bronze altar of burnt offering, overlaid with brass. Source for thysiastērion at Rev 6:9 (souls under the altar — sacrifice imagery, no 'golden' qualifier). The horns (27:2) parallel the four horns of the golden altar (Rev 9:13).
Notes: Compartment: OUTER COURT. The altar at Rev 6:9 lacks the chrysoun (golden) qualifier found at Rev 8:3 and 9:13, suggesting a different altar — the bronze altar of sacrifice rather than the golden altar of incense.
Golden altar of incense — HP furniture, source for Rev 8:3-4¶
And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: [of] shittim wood shalt thou make it. A cubit [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits [shall be] the height thereof: the horns thereof [shall be] of the same. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about. And two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it, by the two corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shalt thou make [it]; and they shall be for places for the staves to bear it withal. And thou shalt make the staves [of] shittim wood, and overlay them with gold. And thou shalt put it before the vail that [is] by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that [is] over the testimony, where I will meet with thee. And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it. And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon. And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it [is] most holy unto the LORD.
Context: HP blueprint for the golden altar of incense. Overlaid with pure gold (30:3), with four horns. Positioned before the veil, before the mercy seat (30:6). Source for the golden altar (thysiastērion chrysoun) at Rev 8:3-4 and the four horns at Rev 9:13.
Notes: Compartment: HOLY PLACE (though positioned 'before the veil' — transitional between HP and MHP). Incense burned morning and evening (30:7-8) parallels the continual prayers of saints. Day of Atonement blood on the horns (30:10) connects to Rev 9:13 voice from the four horns.
Bronze laver — Outer Court furniture, source for sea of glass¶
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Thou shalt also make a laver [of] brass, and his foot [also of] brass, to wash [withal]: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat: When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD: So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, [even] to him and to his seed throughout their generations.
Context: Outer Court blueprint for the bronze laver. Used for priestly washing before ministry. Multiple scholars identify this as the source for the sea of glass (thalassa hyalinē) at Rev 4:6. The crystalline/glass quality suggests completed purification — no further washing needed.
Notes: Compartment: OUTER COURT (between tabernacle and altar). The bronze laver -> sea of glass transition: earthly laver required active washing; heavenly sea of glass is crystal-still. At Rev 15:2 saints STAND ON the sea of glass — the purification surface has become a platform of victory.
Glory fills tabernacle, no one can enter — inauguration pattern¶
Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
Context: The inauguration pattern: glory fills, no one can enter. This pattern appears at every OT inauguration (Exo 40:34-35, 1 Ki 8:10-11) but is ABSENT from Rev 4-5. It is displaced to Rev 15:8, where the temple is filled with smoke from God's glory and no one can enter.
Notes: CRITICAL ASYMMETRY: Rev 4-5 lacks this pattern. The glory-filling exclusion is displaced to Rev 15:8. This means Rev 4-5 is NOT an inauguration scene — it depicts the ongoing reality of the heavenly throne room, not a one-time inaugural moment. Parallel: 1 Ki 8:10-11.
Sinai theophany — source vocabulary for Rev 4:5 formula¶
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
Context: The original Sinai theophany providing the vocabulary template for Revelation's recurring formula. Thunders (qolot/brontai), lightnings (beraqim/astrapai), voice of trumpet (qol shophar/phōnē salpiggos), earthquake (quaking/seismos).
Notes: Source for the four-occurrence Sinai-theophany formula in Revelation: Rev 4:5 (astrapai + phōnai + brontai = 3 elements), Rev 8:5 (+seismos = 4), Rev 11:19 (+chalaza megalē = 5), Rev 16:18-21 (+megas modifiers = 5+). Progressive intensification documented in revs2-01.
First thronos reference — seven Spirits before the throne, divine title first form¶
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
Context: Opening salutation. Establishes throne as reference point from the prologue. Contains the solecistic nominative (apo ho ōn instead of expected genitive apo tou ontos) — deliberate allusion to Exo 3:14 LXX. The seven Spirits before the throne (4:5 lampades pyros) are introduced here.
Notes: Parsed: apo + nominative (ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos) instead of expected genitive — deliberate Exodus 3:14 allusion. Word order: ho ōn (is) first, then ho ēn (was), then ho erchomenos (coming). Contrast with 4:8 which reorders to ho ēn kai ho ōn kai ho erchomenos. The seven Spirits before his throne connect prologue directly to throne room.
First sanctuary introduction — lampstands, Son of Man¶
And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [one] like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and [his] hairs [were] white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes [were] as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: [I am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
Context: First proposed sanctuary introduction scene (Paulien framework). Lychnia (G3087, lampstand) is the only sanctuary furniture visible — HP furniture per Exo 25:31-40. The seven candlesticks = seven churches (1:20).
Notes: Sanctuary furniture present: lychnia (lampstand, HP). White hair/wool echoes Dan 7:9 Ancient of Days. Feet like brass echoes Ezek 1:7. Voice like many waters echoes Ezek 1:24. Light-word triad begins here: lychnia concentrated in Vision 1.
Overcomer promise — shared throne, connects churches to throne room¶
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Context: Final overcomer promise in the churches section. Two thrones mentioned: Christ's throne and the Father's throne. Connects the churches section to the throne room (4-5) and forward to saints' thrones at 20:4.
Notes: Thronos x2. Links churches -> throne room (4:2) -> saints' thrones (20:4). The promise to sit WITH Christ on his throne resolves at 20:4 where thrones are given to the saints for judgment.
Altar under which souls cry — first altar appearance in seals¶
And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they [were], should be fulfilled.
Context: Fifth seal. First altar (thysiastērion) appearance after the throne room. The souls esphagmenōn (perfect passive participle of sphazō, same root as Lamb's esphagmenon at 5:6) are under the altar — sacrifice imagery. The altar lacks the chrysoun (golden) qualifier found at 8:3.
Notes: Parsed: thysiastēriou (G2379, Gen Sg N) — no chrysoun qualifier. esphagmenōn (G4969, Perf Pass Ptcp Gen Pl M) — same root as Lamb's description. Altar vindication arc station 1: passive reception of blood, cry for justice.
Wrath of the Lamb — throne language in seals climax¶
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Context: Sixth seal climax. Throne + Lamb vocabulary from the throne room reappears in the seals judgment. The one sitting on the throne (tou kathēmenou epi tou thronou) and the Lamb (tou arniou) together — matching the throne room configuration of 4-5.
Notes: Thronos + arnion in the seals. Structural anchor function demonstrated: the same entities introduced in the throne room (one seated on throne + Lamb) are the source of judgment in the seals sequence.
Great multitude before the throne — throne room entities reunited¶
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and [about] the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Context: Seals interlude. ALL throne room entities are present: thronos, arnion, presbyteroi, zōa, angels. Worship scene with seven-element doxology (7:12). The Lamb 'in the midst of the throne' (7:17) echoes 5:6 positioning. Naos appears at 7:15.
Notes: Thronos appears 5x in 7:9-17. All four throne room entity categories present. The Lamb as shepherd (7:17) introduces a new role — the slain Lamb now feeds and leads. Tears wiped (7:17) anticipates 21:4.
Third sanctuary introduction — golden altar, censer, incense, Sinai formula repeated¶
And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer [it] with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, [which came] with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast [it] into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
Context: Third proposed sanctuary introduction (Paulien framework). Trumpet sequence preceded by the altar scene. Sanctuary furniture: thysiastērion (G2379, altar x2), libanotos chrysoun (golden censer, G3031), thymiamata (incense, G2368), thronos. The Sinai-theophany formula recurs at 8:5 with seismos added (4 elements).
Notes: Parsed: Rev 8:3 — thysiastēriou (altar, without qualifier) then thysiastērion to chrysoun (golden altar before the throne) — two altars distinguished. libanoton chrysoun (golden censer, G3031). thymiamata (incense, G2368). Rev 8:5 — brontai kai phōnai kai astrapai kai seismos (4 elements, +seismos from 4:5's 3). Vessel transformation intermediate step: censer filled with altar fire and hurled earthward — transition from intercession to judgment.
Voice from golden altar horns — altar commands judgment¶
And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
Context: Sixth trumpet. The golden altar (thysiastēriou tou chrysou tou enōpion tou theou) speaks with a voice commanding judgment. Altar vindication arc station 4: the altar itself initiates judgment.
Notes: Parsed: thysiastēriou (G2379) tou chrysou (golden) tou enōpion tou theou (before God). The four horns echo the golden altar of incense blueprint (Exo 30:2). The altar actively commands — transition from receiving prayers (8:3-4) to directing judgment.
Seventh trumpet — temple opened, ark visible, Sinai formula with hail¶
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Context: Seventh trumpet climax. Elders worship with shortened divine title (ho ōn kai ho ēn — no ho erchomenos). Temple (naos) opened, ark (kibotos) visible for the first time. Sinai-theophany formula at 11:19 with 5 elements (+ chalaza megalē).
Notes: Parsed: Rev 11:17 — ho ōn kai ho ēn (CONFIRMED: ho erchomenos ABSENT — shortened divine title). Rev 11:19 — ēnoigē ho naos tou theou (G3485) + ōphthē hē kibōtos (G2787) tēs diathēkēs (G1242). Formula: astrapai + phōnai + brontai + seismos + chalaza megalē (5 elements). Fourth proposed sanctuary introduction (Paulien): MHP furniture (ark) now visible. The ark is MOST HOLY PLACE furniture — this opening reveals the innermost sanctuary.
Satan's seat (thronos) — adversarial throne established¶
I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan's seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
Context: Message to Pergamos. Satan's seat (thronon) is the first adversarial use of thronos, establishing the structural contrast between God's throne (4:2) and Satan's counterfeit throne system.
Notes: Thronos used for Satan's throne — structural contrast with God's throne. KJV translates as 'seat' but the Greek is thronos (same word as God's throne). This adversarial throne system expands at 13:2 (dragon gives beast his throne) and is targeted at 16:10 (fifth bowl poured on beast's throne).
Beast's throne from dragon — adversarial throne system expands¶
And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Context: Beast receives dragon's throne (thronon), power (dynamin), and authority (exousian) — parodying the Lamb receiving power at 5:12. The beast's wound (hōs esphagmenēn) parodies the Lamb's 'as slain' (hōs esphagmenon) at 5:6. Worship directed to dragon and beast parodies Rev 4-5 worship.
Notes: Thronos for the beast — second adversarial throne reference. The beast-Lamb parody: both 'as slain' (same root sphazō), both receive authority, both worshipped. This structural contrast demonstrates the throne room's organizing function extends to the adversarial system.
Lamb on Mount Zion — 144,000 before the throne¶
And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, [being] the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
Context: Arnion on Mount Zion. Throne room vocabulary reappears: throne, living creatures (zōa), elders (presbyteroi). New song before the throne (14:3) echoes 5:9. The 144,000 stand before the throne of God (14:5).
Notes: Thronos x2, arnion x2, zōa, presbyteroi — full throne room vocabulary cluster. The Lamb's location has shifted from 'in the midst of the throne' (5:6) to 'on mount Sion' — yet the new song is sung 'before the throne.' Throne room is the constant reference point.
Angel with fire authority from altar — altar vindication continues¶
And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
Context: Harvest scene. Angel from the altar (thysiastēriou) with authority (exousian) over fire. Altar vindication arc station 5: authority flows from the altar to direct harvest judgment.
Notes: Thysiastēriou (G2379). The altar personified authority continues — from passive receptor of blood (6:9) through intermediary (8:3-5) to voice (9:13) to fire authority source (14:18).
Sea of glass with fire, temple opened, glory-filling exclusion¶
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, [and] over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for [thou] only [art] holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: Fifth proposed sanctuary introduction (Paulien). Sea of glass reappears from 4:6, now with fire and saints standing ON it. Triple-genitive at 15:5 (ho naos tēs skēnēs tou martyriou). Living creature (zoon) distributes bowls of wrath (15:7). Glory-filling exclusion at 15:8 parallels Exo 40:34-35.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 15:5 — ho naos (G3485, Nom Sg M) tēs skēnēs (G4633, Gen Sg F) tou martyriou (G3142, Gen Sg N) — unique triple-genitive in all Scripture. Rev 15:7 — phialas chrysas gemousas tou thymou tou theou — vessel transformation COMPLETE (5:8 prayer bowls -> 15:7 wrath bowls). Rev 15:8 — egemisthē ho naos kapnou ek tēs doxēs tou theou + oudeis edynato eiselthein eis ton naon — glory-filling exclusion pattern (Exo 40:34-35, 1 Ki 8:10-11) displaced here from Rev 4-5.
Altar speaks vindication — thysiastērion personified¶
And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous [are] thy judgments.
Context: Third bowl context. The altar (thysiastēriou) itself speaks, using the divine title (Kyrie ho theos ho pantokratōr). Altar vindication arc climax: the altar that received the martyrs' blood (6:9) and prayers (8:3-4) now speaks vindication of God's judgments.
Notes: Parsed: thysiastēriou (G2379, Gen Sg N) legontos (present active participle — the altar itself 'saying'). The altar is personified — it speaks. Structurally, this completes the arc from 6:9 (altar passively holds blood) through 8:3-5 (altar mediates) through 9:13 (altar commands) to 16:7 (altar vindicates).
Beast's throne darkened — fifth bowl targets adversarial throne¶
And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
Context: Fifth bowl poured on the beast's throne (thronon). The adversarial throne system (2:13 -> 13:2 -> 16:10) is directly targeted. God's throne produces light (4:5 lampades pyros); the beast's throne produces darkness.
Notes: Thronos for the beast's throne — third adversarial throne reference. Structural contrast: God's throne produces lightnings (4:5), beast's throne produces darkness (16:10). The bowl judgments target the counterfeit system established in contrast to the true throne room.
Seventh bowl — Sinai-theophany formula at maximum intensity¶
And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, [and] so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, [every stone] about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
Context: Seventh bowl climax. Voice comes from the temple (naou) and from the throne (thronou) — throne room directly connected to the bowls. Sinai-theophany formula at maximum intensity: all 5 elements + megas modifiers.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 16:17 — phōnē megalē ek tou naou (G3485) apo tou thronou (G2362) — voice from temple AND throne simultaneously. Rev 16:18 — astrapai + phōnai + brontai + seismos megas (unprecedented qualifier: oios ouk egeneto aph' hou anthrōpos egeneto epi tēs gēs). 16:21 — chalaza megalē (talent-weight). Formula elements: 5+ with maximum intensifiers. The throne room is the SOURCE of the bowl judgments, demonstrated by the voice coming directly from the throne (16:17).
Hallelujah chorus — final combined worship scene¶
And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous [are] his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Context: Final combined worship scene. Throne room entities present: throne (thronou, 19:4-5), elders (presbyteroi, 19:4), living creatures (zōa, 19:4). Last time elders and living creatures worship together. Voice from the throne (19:5). Vindication of the blood of servants (19:2) completes the altar vindication arc begun at 6:9-10.
Notes: Thronos x2 (19:4-5). pipto + proskyneō pattern (19:4) — same as 4:10, 5:14, 7:11, 11:16. Four Hallelujah cries — the only NT occurrences of Hallelujah. Voice 'out of the throne' (ek tou thronou, 19:5) matches 4:5 (ek tou thronou). Altar vindication completed at 19:2 (avenged the blood of his servants).
Thrones (plural) for judgment — saints' thrones fulfill 3:21¶
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Context: Millennial judgment. Thronoi (plural) for saints — fulfilling the overcomer promise of 3:21. Judgment given to those who did not worship the beast — the proper vs. improper worship contrast reaches its resolution.
Notes: Thronos (plural) for saints — the only use of plural thronoi for the redeemed in Revelation (Dan 7:9 also has plural thrones). Fulfills 3:21 overcomer promise. Links back to Dan 7:22 (judgment given to the saints of the most High).
Great white throne — thronos megas leukos, books opened¶
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Context: Great white throne judgment. Throne vocabulary from the throne room (4:2) in its final judgment application. Books opened parallels Dan 7:10. The throne is 'great' (megas) and 'white' (leukos) — unique qualifiers not used for the throne in ch. 4.
Notes: Thronos megas leukos — unique descriptors for this judgment throne. Earth and heaven flee from the one seated — the throne's authority dissolves the old creation (contrast 4:2 where the throne is set IN heaven). Dan 7:9-10 parallel: thrones, seated judge, books opened.
New heaven/earth — throne voice declares 'I make all things new'¶
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Context: New creation. The one seated on the throne (ho kathēmenos epi tō thronō, 21:5) speaks directly — the same seated figure from 4:2. The tabernacle of God with men (skēnē tou theou, G4633) fulfills the sanctuary trajectory. No more sea (21:1) — the sea of glass (4:6) is resolved.
Notes: Thronos at 21:5. The skēnē tou theou (tabernacle of God) with men resolves the sanctuary progression — from earthly tabernacle through heavenly temple to God dwelling directly with humanity. No more sea (21:1) resolves the sea of glass — the barrier/threshold is removed.
New Jerusalem cube dimensions — matches Holy of Holies¶
And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
Context: New Jerusalem's dimensions form a perfect cube (length = breadth = height). This matches the Holy of Holies at 1 Ki 6:20 (20 cubits in each dimension). The city IS the Most Holy Place.
Notes: Cube dimensions = Holy of Holies (1 Ki 6:19-20: 'twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof'). The entire city is the MHP — the sanctuary progression reaches its terminus where the entire habitation is the innermost sanctuary.
No temple — naos negated then predicated of God and Lamb; Lamb is the light¶
And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof.
Context: Naos first denied as accusative object (naon ouk eidon, 'I saw no temple') then predicated in nominative as God and Lamb (ho gar kyrios ho theos ho pantokratōr naos autēs estin, kai to arnion). Lychnos of the city is the Lamb (21:23) — light-word triad terminus.
Notes: Parsed: naon (G3485, Acc Sg M — object not seen) -> naos (G3485, Nom Sg M — predicate of divine being). Grammatical shift from accusative to nominative. Arnion (G721, Nom Sg N) at 21:22 as co-temple. Lychnos (G3088) at 21:23 — 'the Lamb is the light thereof.' The temple is not absent but universalized — God and the Lamb ARE the temple. Light-word triad: lychnia (1:12ff) -> lampas (4:5) -> lychnos of Lamb (21:23, then negated at 22:5).
River from throne of God and Lamb — throne as source of life¶
And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, [was there] the tree of life, which bare twelve [manner of] fruits, [and] yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree [were] for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
Context: Final throne references. The throne of God and of the Lamb (tou thronou tou theou kai tou arniou) — the same throne from 4:2 now permanently among humanity. River of life proceeds from the throne — the throne as source of life, not just authority. 'Clear as crystal' (22:1) echoes the sea of glass 'like unto crystal' (4:6).
Notes: Thronos x2 (22:1, 22:3). Final throne references in the book. The throne of God AND of the Lamb — merged identity. The same throne introduced at 4:2 is the final structural element of the book. Crystal (krustallos) at 22:1 echoes 4:6 — bookend imagery.
Seven lamps = eyes of the LORD = Spirit — explicit decoder for Rev 4:5 and 5:6¶
And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all [of] gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which [are] upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right [side] of the bowl, and the other upon the left [side] thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What [are] these, my lord? Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. Who [art] thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel [thou shalt become] a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone [thereof with] shoutings, [crying], Grace, grace unto it. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel [with] those seven; they [are] the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
Context: Zechariah's lampstand vision provides the explicit decoder chain for the seven Spirits: seven lamps (Zech 4:2) = eyes of the LORD which run to and fro through the earth (Zech 4:10) = 'by my spirit' (Zech 4:6). Revelation uses this chain: seven lampades pyros = seven Spirits (4:5); seven eyes = seven Spirits sent forth into all the earth (5:6).
Notes: Canonical cross-reference (OT source governs): Zech 4:2,10 explicitly decodes seven lamps = eyes of the LORD = Spirit. This confirms: Rev 4:5 seven lamps of fire = seven Spirits of God; Rev 5:6 seven eyes = seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. The two olive trees (Zech 4:3,11-14) reappear at Rev 11:4.
Holy of Holies cube dimensions — source for New Jerusalem dimensions¶
And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD. And the oracle in the forepart [was] twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and [so] covered the altar [which was of] cedar.
Context: Solomon's temple Holy of Holies dimensions: 20x20x20 cubits — a perfect cube. Source for Rev 21:16 where New Jerusalem is a cube (length = breadth = height). The entire New Jerusalem is the MHP.
Notes: The cube shape is unique to the Holy of Holies. No other room in the temple or tabernacle is described as a cube. When John sees the New Jerusalem as a cube, readers familiar with the sanctuary blueprint would immediately recognize it as the Most Holy Place expanded to cosmic scale.
Day of Atonement ritual — cherubim, mercy seat, incense cloud, no-entry¶
And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy [place] within the vail before the mercy seat, which [is] upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. Thus shall Aaron come into the holy [place]: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these [are] holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and [so] put them on. And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which [is] for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house. And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD [at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD'S lot fell, and offer him [for] a sin offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, [and] to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness. And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which [is] for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which [is] for himself: And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring [it] within the vail: And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that [is] upon the testimony, that he die not: And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle [it] with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that [is] for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: And he shall make an atonement for the holy [place], because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness. And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy [place], until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
Context: Day of Atonement ritual. Censer with burning coals from the altar (16:12) + incense (16:13) parallels Rev 8:3-5. The no-entry rule (16:17 'no man in the tabernacle') parallels Rev 15:8 ('no man was able to enter into the temple'). Blood sprinkled on the mercy seat connects to the Lamb 'as slain.'
Notes: Lev 16:12 (censer + coals from altar) -> Rev 8:5 (censer filled with fire from altar). Lev 16:13 (incense cloud covers mercy seat) -> Rev 8:3-4 (incense with prayers ascends). Lev 16:17 (no man in tabernacle) -> Rev 15:8 (no man able to enter temple). The DOA sequence provides the liturgical template for the Rev 8-16 judgment sequence.
Male child caught up to throne — thronos in cosmic narrative¶
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne.
Context: Cosmic conflict narrative. The male child caught up to God and to his throne (ton thronon) — throne vocabulary in the center of the book's narrative. The throne is the place of safety and authority.
Notes: Thronos in the cosmic narrative section. The throne as destination of the male child — the same throne from 4:2 is the reference point for Christ's exaltation in the war narrative.
I AM WHO I AM — source for divine title formula¶
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Context: The divine self-identification at the burning bush. LXX renders this as egō eimi ho ōn ('I am the one who is'). The divine title in Revelation (ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos) is an expansion of this Exodus name — the solecistic nominative at Rev 1:4 (apo ho ōn instead of apo tou ontos) deliberately alludes to this passage by treating the title as an indeclinable divine name.
Notes: Source for the divine title formula. Exo 3:14 LXX: egō eimi ho ōn. Revelation expands into three temporal dimensions: ho ōn (the one who IS), ho ēn (the one who WAS), ho erchomenos (the one who IS COMING). The grammatical anomaly at Rev 1:4 (nominative after apo) signals this is a frozen divine name, not a mere description.
First angel — worship the Creator, throne room theology¶
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
Context: First angel's message. The call to 'worship him that made heaven and earth' echoes the elders' worship at 4:11 ('thou hast created all things'). The proper-worship theme from the throne room (4:10-11) is proclaimed to all nations.
Notes: Proskyneō (G4352) — worship the Creator. Echoes 4:11 (creation worship). The first angel's message recapitulates the throne room's foundational theology: worship belongs to the Creator, not to any creature or counterfeit.
Angel worship forbidden — proper worship boundary¶
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See [thou do it] not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Context: John falls to worship the angel and is rebuked. 'Worship God' (tō theō proskyneō) — the worship that belongs only to the one on the throne (4:10) must not be given to creatures. Repeated at 22:8-9.
Notes: Proskyneō boundary. The worship scenes at 4:10, 5:14, 7:11, 11:16, 19:4 are directed to God/Lamb on the throne. The warnings at 19:10 and 22:8-9 reinforce: worship is for the throne occupant alone.
Second angel worship forbidden — bookend with 19:10¶
And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
Context: Near-identical to 19:10. The doubled warning (19:10 + 22:8-9) frames the proper-vs-improper worship contrast that runs from the throne room through the entire book.
Notes: Second proskyneō boundary. The double occurrence creates a structural inclusio around the New Jerusalem vision (19:10 before -> 22:9 after), reinforcing that all worship flows to the throne.
Lion of Judah — source for Rev 5:5¶
Judah [is] a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him [shall] the gathering of the people [be].
Context: Jacob's blessing on Judah. Source for the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Rev 5:5). The Lion is announced but the Lamb appears — the hear/see contrast at Rev 5:5-6.
Notes: Source for Rev 5:5 'the Lion of the tribe of Juda.' The royal-messianic expectation (lion, sceptre) is fulfilled in an unexpected way — by a Lamb 'as it had been slain.' The hear/see contrast at 5:5-6 is structurally significant: hearing announces the Lion; seeing reveals the Lamb.
Led as a lamb to slaughter — source for Lamb christology¶
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
Context: Suffering Servant passage. Source for the Lamb christology in Rev 5:6. The lamb led to slaughter (seh) provides the sacrificial background for the Lamb 'as it had been slain' (hōs esphagmenon).
Notes: OT background for the Lamb title. LXX uses amnos (G286) here, not arnion (G721) — Revelation deliberately uses the diminutive form arnion rather than the sacrificial amnos, adding nuance to the christological title.
Glory fills Solomon's temple — inauguration pattern parallel¶
And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy [place], that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.
Context: Solomon's temple dedication. Glory fills, priests cannot minister — the same inauguration pattern as Exo 40:34-35. Both parallels are ABSENT from Rev 4-5 but PRESENT at Rev 15:8.
Notes: Second inauguration pattern instance. Exo 40:34-35 + 1 Ki 8:10-11 establish the pattern; Rev 15:8 is the Revelation equivalent. Rev 4-5's ABSENCE of this pattern argues against reading the throne room as an inauguration scene.
Two candlesticks (lychnia) — Zechariah 4 connection¶
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
Context: Two witnesses described as two olive trees and two lampstands (lychniai). Direct allusion to Zech 4:3,11-14 (two olive trees beside the lampstand). Lychnia reappears in the trumpets section.
Notes: Lychnia (G3087) at 11:4 — the only occurrence outside the churches section (1:12-13, 1:20, 2:1, 2:5). Links the trumpets section back to both the churches (lychnia) and the Zechariah source (olive trees). Light-word triad: lychnia here bridges Vision 1 and Vision 2.
Babylon's lamp extinguished — lychnos negated for Babylon¶
And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Context: Babylon's fall. Lychnos (lamp/candle, G3088) shall shine no more in Babylon. The light-word triad: lychnia in the churches -> lampas at the throne -> lychnos negated for Babylon (18:23), then for the city itself (21:23), then for all creation (22:5).
Notes: Lychnos (G3088) negated for Babylon — the light is removed from the counterfeit system. Contrast with 21:23 where lychnos is the Lamb himself, and 22:5 where lychnos is unnecessary because God gives light directly.
No need of lamp — lychnos negated, light-word triad terminus¶
And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Context: Final verse of the New Jerusalem vision. Lychnos (candle/lamp, G3088) negated — no need of artificial light because God gives light directly. The light-word triad reaches its terminus: lychnia (fixed HP furniture) -> lampas (burning before throne) -> lychnos (negated — direct divine presence replaces mediated light).
Notes: Lychnos (G3088) final negation. The progression: lychnia (lampstand, physical HP furniture, Rev 1-2) -> lampas (torch/lamp of fire, burning before throne, Rev 4:5) -> lychnos (portable lamp, negated at 18:23 for Babylon, redefined as Lamb at 21:23, fully negated at 22:5). Each term is more intimate/portable than the last; the final negation signals that all mediated light gives way to direct divine illumination.
Seal the book — source for Rev 5:1 sealed scroll¶
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Context: Daniel commanded to seal the book until the time of the end. Source for the sealed-to-unsealed arc: Dan 12:4 (seal) -> Rev 5:1 (sealed scroll in God's hand) -> Rev 22:10 (seal not the prophecy). Newton identifies Rev 5's scroll with Daniel's sealed book.
Notes: Sealed-to-unsealed arc documented in revs2-02. Dan 12:4 sealing command -> Rev 5:1-5 scroll imagery (biblion katesphragismenon sphragisin hepta) -> Rev 22:10 unsealing command (mē sphragisēs).
Door opened in heaven — progressive temple-opening first step¶
After this I looked, and, behold, a door [was] opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard [was] as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
Context: First step in Moore's progressive temple-opening sequence. thyra ēneōgmenē (door opened) in heaven. The ha dei genesthai ('things which must be hereafter') connects to Dan 2:28 and Rev 1:1,19 (revs2-02 chain).
Notes: Progressive opening step 1: door (thyra) opened. Steps: 4:1 (door) -> 6:14 (heaven departed) -> 11:19 (naos opened, ark visible) -> 15:5 (naos of tent of testimony opened) -> 21:22 (no naos — opening complete). The sequence tracks from partial access to total openness to absence of barrier.
Heaven departed as a scroll — progressive opening step 2¶
And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
Context: Sixth seal. Heaven itself (ouranos) apechōristhē (departed/split). Moore's progressive opening step 2 — from a door in heaven (4:1) to heaven itself splitting open.
Notes: Progressive opening step 2: heaven departed (apechōristhē). The barrier between earthly and heavenly is progressively removed across the book.
24 priestly courses — source for 24 elders in Rev 4:4¶
Now [these are] the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office. And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service. And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and [thus] were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar [there were] sixteen chief men of the house of [their] fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers. Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors [of the house] of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar. And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, [one] of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and [before] the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and [one] taken for Ithamar. Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin, The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, The ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses, The nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel, The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul, The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah. These [were] the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.
Context: David organizes the Aaronic priests into 24 courses for temple service. Each course served in rotation. This organizational structure is the most commonly cited OT source for the 24 elders (presbyteroi) seated on thrones around God's throne in Rev 4:4.
Notes: 24 priestly courses = 24 elders. The elders in Rev 4:4 wear stephanos (victor's wreaths) not diadema (royal crowns), consistent with priestly rather than royal identity. They sit on thronoi around the central throne, mirroring the priestly courses organized around the sanctuary. Luke 1:5 identifies Zacharias as belonging to the course of Abijah (the 8th course, 1 Chr 24:10), confirming the courses were still functional in the NT era.
First full divine title with Pantokratōr — prologue anchor¶
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Context: First full divine title in Revelation with Pantokratōr (G3841). The tripartite formula ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos appears here in the same word order as 1:4 (is/was/coming). This is the fullest form of the title: Alpha and Omega + ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos + ho Pantokratōr.
Notes: Parsed: ho ōn (Pres Act Ptcp Nom Sg M) kai ho ēn (Impf Act Ind 3S) kai ho erchomenos (Pres M/P Ptcp Nom Sg M), ho Pantokratōr (G3841, Nom Sg M). Full divine title form. Compare with 4:8 (reordered: ho ēn kai ho ōn kai ho erchomenos) and 11:17/16:5 (shortened: ho ōn kai ho ēn — no ho erchomenos). The progressive shortening of the title tracks eschatological arrival.
Living creatures' trisagion and reordered divine title¶
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Context: The living creatures' perpetual worship. The trisagion (Holy holy holy) derives from Isa 6:3 seraphim. The divine title here is REORDERED from 1:4,8: ho ēn kai ho ōn kai ho erchomenos (was/is/coming) rather than ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos (is/was/coming). This reordering in the throne room context emphasizes the eternal past-to-future sweep.
Notes: Parsed: hagios (G40, Nom Sg M) x3 = trisagion. Kyrios ho Theos ho Pantokratōr (G2962 + G2316 + G3841). ho ēn (Impf Act Ind 3S) kai ho ōn (Pres Act Ptcp Nom Sg M) kai ho erchomenos (Pres M/P Ptcp Nom Sg M) — REORDERED from 1:4/1:8. The perpetual nature (anapausin ouk echousin hēmeras kai nyktos) establishes the throne room as a place of continuous worship, not a one-time event.
Golden bowls of incense = prayers of saints — vessel transformation origin¶
And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
Context: Worship response to the Lamb taking the scroll. The phialas chrysas gemousas thymiamatōn (golden bowls full of incense) are explicitly identified as hai proseuchai tōn hagiōn (the prayers of saints). This is the origin point of the vessel transformation arc that culminates at 15:7.
Notes: Parsed: phialas (G5357, Acc Pl F) chrysas (G5552, Acc Pl F) gemousas (G1073, Pres Act Ptcp Acc Pl F) thymiamatōn (G2368, Gen Pl N). hai eisin hai proseuchai tōn hagiōn — relative clause IDENTIFIES incense as prayers. Vessel transformation arc origin: 5:8 (phialas chrysas gemousas thymiamatōn = prayers) -> 15:7 (phialas chrysas gemousas tou thymou = wrath). The pipto + proskyneō pattern (5:8 epesan enōpion tou arniou) matches 4:10, 7:11, 11:16, 19:4.
Four living creatures announce four horsemen — structural thread from throne room¶
And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse [that was] red: and [power] was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and [see] thou hurt not the oil and the wine. And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
Context: First four seals. Each living creature (zoon) announces a horseman with Erchou (Come!). The Lamb (arnion) opens the seals. The living creatures from the throne room (4:6-8) serve as announcers in the seals sequence, directly connecting the judgment sequence to the foundational scene.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 6:1 — Arnion (G721, Nom Sg N) opens the seal; zoon (G2226, Gen Sg N via zōōn) announces with phōnē brontēs (voice of thunder, connecting to the throne-room brontai at 4:5). Erchou (G2064, Pres M/P Impv 2S) — imperative command. Each of the four living creatures from the throne room announces one horseman (6:1, 6:3, 6:5, 6:7), establishing the throne room entities as directors of the seal judgments.
Angel with golden censer, incense with prayers on golden altar before the throne¶
Context: Trumpet prelude. The angel stands at the altar with a golden censer (libanoton chrysoun, G3031). Two altars distinguished: thysiastēriou (without qualifier) and thysiastērion to chrysoun to enōpion tou thronou (golden altar before the throne). The incense-prayer connection from 5:8 continues: thymiamata with proseuchai ascend before God.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 8:3 — thysiastēriou (G2379, Gen Sg N, no qualifier) + thysiastērion to chrysoun (G2379, Acc Sg N + golden qualifier) — two distinct altars. libanoton chrysoun (G3031, Acc Sg M) — golden censer. thymiamata (G2368, Nom Pl N) — incense. Rev 8:4 — anebē ho kapnos tōn thymiamatōn tais proseuchais tōn hagiōn — smoke of incense ascended WITH prayers of saints. Connects throne room (thronou at 8:3) to the trumpet judgments.
24 elders worship with shortened divine title at seventh trumpet¶
And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
Context: Seventh trumpet. The 24 elders fall and worship (pipto + proskyneō pattern from 4:10). The divine title at 11:17 is SHORTENED: ho ōn kai ho ēn — ho erchomenos is ABSENT. The 'coming' element drops because at the seventh trumpet the coming is realized. The elders sit on thronoi (thronous, Acc Pl M) before God.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 11:16 — presbyteroi (G4245, Nom Pl M) + thronous (G2362, Acc Pl M) + epesan + prosekynēsan (pipto + proskyneō pattern). Rev 11:17 — ho ōn kai ho ēn (CONFIRMED: ho erchomenos ABSENT). Kyrios ho Theos ho Pantokratōr (full divine name minus the third temporal element). The shortened title is theologically significant: 'the coming one' drops because the coming has occurred. Same shortening at 16:5.
Beast's wound healed — parody of Lamb standing as slain¶
And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Context: Beast parody of the Lamb. The beast's head hōs esphagmenēn (as slain, Perf Pass Ptcp from sphazō G4969) parallels the Lamb's hōs esphagmenon (5:6, same root). The beast's wound healed parodies the Lamb standing despite being slain. Worship directed to dragon and beast parodies the throne-room worship of 4-5.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 13:3 — hōs esphagmenēn (G4969, Perf Pass Ptcp Acc Sg F) eis thanaton — same sphazō root as Lamb's esphagmenon at 5:6. Rev 13:4 — prosekynēsan (G4352) tw drakoni + prosekynēsan tw thēriō — double proskyneō directed at beast system, parodying the double worship of God and Lamb in 4-5. 'Who is like the beast?' parodies 'Who is worthy?' (5:2).
Lamb slain from foundation of world — arnion identity beyond throne room¶
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Context: The Lamb's identity extends before the throne room scene. tou Arniou tou esphagmenou apo katabolēs kosmou — the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. The book of life belongs to the Lamb (tou Arniou, Gen Sg N). proskyneō directed at the beast contrasts with proper throne-room worship.
Notes: Parsed: Arniou (G721, Gen Sg N) tou esphagmenou (G4969, Perf Pass Ptcp Gen Sg N) apo katabolēs (G2602, Gen Sg F) kosmou (G2889, Gen Sg M). The Lamb's slain identity is not merely a historical event but a pre-temporal reality. proskynesousin (G4352, Fut Act Ind 3P) — improper worship contrasts with proper throne worship.
Song of Moses and of the Lamb — worship at sea of glass¶
And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for [thou] only [art] holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.
Context: Saints standing on the sea of glass (15:2, from 4:6) sing the song of Moses (tou doulou tou Theou) and the song of the Lamb (tou Arniou). The worship content combines the OT exodus tradition (Moses) with the NT redemption (Lamb). The divine title Kyrios ho Theos ho Pantokratōr matches 4:8 and 11:17.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 15:3 — ōdēn (G5603, Acc Sg F) Mōuseōs (G3475, Gen Sg M) + ōdēn tou Arniou (G721, Gen Sg N). Kyrios ho Theos ho Pantokratōr (G2962 + G2316 + G3841) — same divine title as 4:8 and 11:17. Basileus tōn ethnōn (G935, Nom Sg M — King of the nations). Rev 15:4 — proskynesousin (G4352, Fut Act Ind 3P) — all nations will worship. Combines exodus and throne-room traditions.
Living creature distributes golden bowls of wrath — vessel transformation complete¶
And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.
Context: A living creature (zoon, from 4:6-8) distributes the bowls of wrath. The phrase phialas chrysas gemousas tou thymou tou Theou completes the vessel transformation arc begun at 5:8 (phialas chrysas gemousas thymiamatōn). Same vessels, same adjectives — different contents.
Notes: Parsed: zōōn (G2226, Gen Pl N) — one of the four living creatures from the throne room. phialas (G5357, Acc Pl F) chrysas (G5552, Acc Pl F) gemousas (G1073, Pres Act Ptcp Acc Pl F) tou thymou (G2372, Gen Sg M) tou Theou (G2316, Gen Sg M). VESSEL TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE: 5:8 phialas chrysas gemousas thymiamatōn (prayers) -> 15:7 phialas chrysas gemousas tou thymou (wrath). Living creatures span all three sequences: seal announcers (6:1-7), throne room inhabitants (4:6-8), bowl distributors (15:7).
Angel of waters uses shortened divine title — ho ōn kai ho ēn, no ho erchomenos¶
And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
Context: Third bowl. The angel of the waters uses the shortened divine title: ho ōn kai ho ēn, ho Hosios — ho erchomenos is ABSENT, replaced by ho Hosios (the Holy One, G3741). Same shortening as 11:17. The KJV 'and shalt be' is a translation addition; the Greek reads ho ōn kai ho ēn, ho Hosios.
Notes: Parsed: ho ōn (G1510, Pres Act Ptcp Nom Sg M) kai ho ēn (G1510, Impf Act Ind 3S) — SHORTENED divine title (ho erchomenos ABSENT). ho Hosios (G3741, Nom Sg M — the Holy One) replaces the 'coming' element. Dikaios (G1342, Nom Sg M — righteous). ekrinas (G2919, Aor Act Ind 2S). The progressive shortening tracks: 1:4,8 (full tripartite) -> 4:8 (full, reordered) -> 11:17 (shortened) -> 16:5 (shortened with substitution).
Final combined worship — elders and living creatures worship together¶
And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.
Context: The final time elders (presbyteroi) and living creatures (zōa) worship together. The pipto + proskyneō pattern from 4:10 recurs for the last time. God is described as tō kathēmenō epi tō thronō (the one sitting on the throne) — same phrase as the throne room description at 4:2-3.
Notes: Parsed: presbyteroi (G4245, Nom Pl M) + zōa (G2226, Nom Pl N) — both throne room entities together for the last time. epesan (G4098, Aor Act Ind 3P) + prosekynēsan (G4352, Aor Act Ind 3P) — final pipto + proskyneō pattern occurrence. tō kathēmenō (G2521, Pres M/P Ptcp Dat Sg M) epi tō thronō (G2362, Dat Sg M). Amēn, Hallēlouia — the briefest worship statement, yet the most complete: the Amen affirms, the Hallelujah praises.
Marriage supper of the Lamb — arnion culmination in eschatological celebration¶
Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Context: The marriage of the Lamb (ho gamos tou Arniou). The Lamb introduced in the throne room at 5:6 now enters the eschatological marriage celebration. The bride has made herself ready. Those called to the marriage supper (deipnon tou gamou tou Arniou) receive a beatitude.
Notes: Parsed: Rev 19:7 — gamos (G1062, Nom Sg M) tou Arniou (G721, Gen Sg N). gynē (G1135, Nom Sg F) autou — his wife. hētoimasen (G2090, Aor Act Ind 3S) heautēn — she made herself ready. Rev 19:9 — deipnon (G1173, Acc Sg N) tou gamou tou Arniou — marriage supper of the Lamb. keklēmenoi (G2564, Perf Pass Ptcp Nom Pl M) — those having been called (perfect tense: permanent state). The Lamb's identity arc from slain sacrifice (5:6) to bridegroom (19:7-9) demonstrates the throne room's structural reach.
Priests of God and Christ — priestly identity connects to throne room¶
Blessed and holy [is] he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Context: Fifth beatitude. Those in the first resurrection are hiereis tou Theou kai tou Christou (priests of God and of Christ). This priestly identity connects back to 5:10 (kings and priests) and forward to the priestly service before the throne. They reign (basileuō) with Christ — the throne promise of 3:21 realized.
Notes: Parsed: hiereis (G2409, Nom Pl M) tou Theou (G2316, Gen Sg M) kai tou Christou (G5547, Gen Sg M) — priests of God AND of Christ. basileuousin (G936, Fut Act Ind 3P) met' autou ta chilia etē — reign with him a thousand years. The priestly identity (hiereis) connects to: 24 priestly courses (1 Chr 24:1-19), elders as priestly representatives (4:4), 'kings and priests' at 5:10, and the final state at 22:3-5 where servants serve (latreuō) him.
New Jerusalem described — Lamb's wife, 12 foundations, 12 gates¶
And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light [was] like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high, [and] had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are [the names] of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Context: New Jerusalem vision opened by one of the seven bowl angels (connecting back to 15:7). The city is identified as tēn nymphēn tēn gynaika tou arniou (the bride, the wife of the Lamb). John is carried en pneumati (in the spirit) — the fourth of four en pneumati markers (1:10, 4:2, 17:3, 21:10). The city has 12 gates (tribes of Israel) and 12 foundations (apostles of the Lamb).
Notes: Parsed: Rev 21:9 — phialas (G5357, Acc Pl F) — the bowl angels bridge from judgment (16:1-17) to the New Jerusalem vision. nymphēn (G3565, Acc Sg F) + gynaika (G1135, Acc Sg F) tou arniou (G721, Gen Sg N). Rev 21:14 — dōdeka themelious (G2310, Acc Pl M) + dōdeka apostolōn (G652, Gen Pl M) tou Arniou (G721, Gen Sg N). Jasper (iaspis) at 21:11 echoes the appearance of the one seated on the throne at 4:3. Crystal (krustallizō) echoes the sea of glass like crystal at 4:6.
