Verses¶
Question¶
What are the primary structural markers in the book of Revelation? Trace the four "in the Spirit" (en pneumati) markers at Rev 1:10, 4:2, 17:3, and 21:10 — how do they divide the book into four major visions? Trace the "and I saw" (kai eidon) transitions — where do they occur, what do they introduce, and how do they subdivide the visions into scenes? Trace the "after these things" (meta tauta) indicators. How do these three marker systems work together to create Revelation's structural skeleton? For each marker, document the Greek form, every occurrence, and what structural boundary it signals. Note where the markers' structural signals converge and where they create ambiguity.
Prologue: Book's self-identification and transmission chain¶
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified [it] by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed [is] he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time [is] at hand.
Context: Opening of the book. Establishes the transmission chain: God → Christ → angel → John → servants. Self-identifies as 'prophecy' and 'things which must shortly come to pass.' Part of the Prologue-Epilogue inclusio.
Notes: Verbal parallels with Rev 22:6 (angel, servants, things which must shortly be done). The word 'signified' (esēmanen, G4591 from sēmaion) connects to the semeion markers at 12:1, 12:3, 15:1.
Prologue greeting: seven churches, seven Spirits, Alpha and Omega¶
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they [also] which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Context: Prologue greeting addressed to the seven churches. Contains 'Alpha and Omega' (inclusio with 22:13), 'seven Spirits' (structural marker: Spirits before the throne), 'Behold, he cometh' (parallels 22:7, 12, 20).
Notes: Multiple verbal elements shared with the Epilogue (22:6-21): Alpha/Omega, seven churches, testimony, faithful witness, coming quickly.
Space/time referent: Patmos setting, trumpet voice¶
I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send [it] unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
Context: First en pneumati marker. Establishes the single visionary episode from Patmos. The trumpet voice recurs at 4:1. Korner's 'single space/time referent' — the en pneumati at 1:10 inaugurates a vision continuing through 22:5.
Notes: egenomen en Pneumati (V-2ADI-1S of ginomai G1096 + PREP G1722 + N-DSN of pneuma G4151). Anarthrous pneumati. Trumpet voice (salpinx G4536) parallels 4:1.
First vision content: seven lampstands, Son of Man description¶
And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [one] like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and [his] hairs [were] white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes [were] as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: [I am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
Context: Vision 1 content begins. Sanctuary imagery: seven golden lampstands (menorah). Rev 1:17 contains 'when I saw him' (kai hote eidon auton) — eidon with intervening words, classified as concurrent description by Korner. Rev 1:19 contains meta tauta in temporal framework: past/present/future division.
Notes: Rev 1:19 Greek: graphon oun ha eides kai ha eisin kai ha mellei genesthai meta tauta. The meta tauta here is part of the temporal framework (what shall be hereafter), not a structural transition formula. Paulien identifies this as a sanctuary introduction scene (lampstands = Holy Place furniture).
Spirit saith to the churches formula (first of seven)¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Context: First occurrence of the 'Spirit saith unto the churches' formula. Uses articular to Pneuma (the Spirit, G4151 with definite article G3588 T-NSN) — contrasting with the anarthrous en Pneumati of the visionary-state formula. Occurs identically at 2:11, 2:17, 2:29, 3:6, 3:13, 3:22.

Notes: Greek: to Pneuma legei tais ekklesiais. The Spirit (articular, nominative) is the subject speaking. This is functionally different from en Pneumati (anarthrous, dative) where pneuma describes John's visionary state. Seven occurrences confined to Vision 1.
Spirit saith to the churches formula (remaining six occurrences)¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. [2:11] | He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna... [2:17] | He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. [2:29] | He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. [3:6] | He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. [3:13] | He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. [3:22]
Context: All seven occurrences are verbatim identical in Greek formula. All within Vision 1 (Rev 1:10-3:22). After 3:22, this formula never appears again — suggesting Vision 1 has a unique structural character (direct communication to the churches).
Notes: TM004 from revs-01: strict confinement to Vision 1. The formula creates internal cadence within the seven churches section. ekklesia (G1577) confined to chs. 1-3 and 22:16.
Major structural boundary: meta tauta eidon + en pneumati convergence¶
After this I looked, and, behold, a door [was] opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard [was] as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne.
Context: The strongest structural boundary in Revelation — BOTH meta tauta eidon AND en pneumati co-occur within two verses. Rev 4:1: Meta tauta eidon kai idou (PREP G3326 + D-APN G3778 + V-2AAI-1S G3708 + CONJ G2532 + V-2AMM-2S G3708). Rev 4:2: eutheos egenomen en Pneumati (ADV G2112 + V-2ADI-1S G1096 + PREP G1722 + N-DSN G4151). Trumpet voice (salpinx) echoes 1:10. Vision 2 begins.

Notes: Rev 4:1 contains meta tauta TWICE: once as structural transition ('After this I looked') and once as temporal reference ('things which must be hereafter' = ha dei genesthai meta tauta). The door 'opened' (eneogmene, perfect passive participle of anoigo G455) — already-existing state. Parallels 15:5 where the temple is 'opened' (enoige, aorist passive).
Throne room scene: inaugural vision of Vision 2¶
And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and [there was] a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne [were] four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne [there was] a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast [was] like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast [was] like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Context: Throne room scene. Rev 4:5 contains the first Sinai-theophany formula: astrapai kai phonai kai brontai (lightnings and voices and thunderings) — 3 elements. This is the inaugural scene for Vision 2. Paulien identifies it as a sanctuary introduction (throne room).
Notes: Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 1: 3 elements (astrapai G796, phonai G5456, brontai G1027). Order: lightnings-voices-thunderings. No seismos, no chalaza. Seven lamps = seven Spirits connects to the sevenfold structural pattern.
Sealed book and Lamb: kai eidon scene openers in the throne room¶
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Context: Three kai eidon occurrences: 5:1 (kai eidon — sealed book), 5:2 (kai eidon — strong angel), 5:6 (kai eidon kai idou — Lamb). The double formula kai eidon kai idou at 5:6 marks elevated structural significance. The Lamb is introduced with a perfect passive participle (esphagmenon — 'having been slain,' resultant state).
Notes: Rev 5:6 kai eidon kai idou is one of 9 occurrences of the double formula. Rev 5:11 has the twinned visual-auditory formula: kai eidon kai ekousa.
First seal: kai eidon opens the seal sequence¶
And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
Context: Kai eidon opens the seal sequence (6:1). Rev 6:2 has kai eidon kai idou (double formula) — the white horse. Thunder (bronte G1027) connects to the Sinai-theophany vocabulary. The twinned eidon-ekousa formula marks each seal opening.
Notes: Progressive intensity begins here: seals use 1/4 fraction (6:8). Kai eidon kai idou at 6:2, 6:5, 6:8 marks each horse-rider revelation.
Fourth seal: pale horse, 1/4 fraction — progressive intensity marker¶
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
Context: Kai eidon kai idou — double formula for elevated significance. 'The fourth part' (tetarton G5067) establishes the first fraction in the progressive intensity pattern: seals = 1/4, trumpets = 1/3, bowls = total.
Notes: The fraction escalation (1/4 → 1/3 → all) is a structural marker supporting either progressive sequence or telescoping.
Meta touto eidon: singular demonstrative variant¶
And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
Context: Uses meta TOUTO (singular, neuter — D-ASN of houtos G3778) instead of the usual meta TAUTA (plural — D-APN). This grammatical variation is structurally significant: singular touto may reference a single preceding event, while plural tauta references a series of events.

Notes: Greek: Meta touto eidon (PREP G3326 + D-ASN G3778 + V-2AAI-1S G3708). Korner includes this as one of 5 meta tauta eidon occurrences. Bandy excludes it (counting only 4). The singular vs. plural distinction needs resolution.
Meta tauta eidon kai idou: great multitude¶
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
Context: Full meta tauta eidon kai idou formula — the most emphatic structural transition marker, combining both meta tauta (macro) and kai idou (elevation). Uses plural tauta (D-APN), contrasting with 7:1's singular touto.

- πολύς (G4183) — A-NSM — Nom Sg M
Notes: Greek: Meta tauta eidon kai idou ochlos polys. Both 7:1 and 7:9 create sub-divisions within what the en pneumati system treats as a single Vision 2 (4:2-16:21). This is a key divergence point between marker systems.
Seventh seal silence and Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 2¶
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer [it] with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, [which came] with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast [it] into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
Context: Rev 8:1 seventh seal opens with silence. Rev 8:2 kai eidon introduces seven trumpet angels — potential telescoping point (7th seal contains trumpets). Rev 8:5 Sinai-theophany formula: brontai kai phonai kai astrapai kai seismos — 4 elements (progression from 3 at 4:5). Sanctuary scene: golden censer (libanotos G3031) transitions from intercession to judgment.
- egeneto (G1096) — V-2ADI-3S — Aor Mid Ind Sg thirdPers
- sige (G4602) — N-NSF — Nom Sg F
Notes: Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 2: 4 elements (brontai G1027, phonai G5456, astrapai G796, seismos G4578). Order changed from 4:5: thunderings-voices-lightnings-earthquake. Addition of seismos marks escalation. Censer transformation: libanotos at 8:3 (intercession) → 8:5 (judgment) in three verses.
First four trumpets: 1/3 fraction — progressive intensity escalation¶
The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
Context: Trumpets use 1/3 fraction (triton G5154) — escalation from seals' 1/4. The 'third part' recurs 12 times in the first four trumpets. 100% domain correspondence with bowls: earth, sea, rivers, sun — in identical sequential order.
Notes: Progressive intensity: seals 1/4 (6:8) → trumpets 1/3 (8:7-12) → bowls total (16:3-4). The domain correspondence (earth/sea/rivers/sun) supports either recapitulation or progressive parallel sequences.
Disputed meta tauta: woe announcement¶
One woe is past; [and], behold, there come two woes more hereafter.
Context: Meta tauta appears here but functions as a simple temporal reference ('two woes more hereafter'), not as a structural-transition formula. No eidon follows. Larsen includes this in his count of 9 meta tauta occurrences; others exclude it.

Notes: Greek: He ouai he mia apelthen; idou erchetai eti duo ouai meta tauta. The meta tauta here means 'hereafter/after this' as a temporal adverb, not a vision-transition formula. Classification: non-formulaic temporal reference.
Kai eidon: mighty angel with little book (6th-7th trumpet interlude)¶
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow [was] upon his head, and his face [was] as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
Context: Kai eidon introduces the mighty angel interlude between the 6th and 7th trumpets. This interlude (10:1-11:14) parallels the sealing interlude between the 6th and 7th seals (7:1-17). The 4+1+(interlude)+1 pattern in both seals and trumpets supports structural parallel.
Notes: The intercalation between 6th and 7th elements is structurally significant. Present in seals and trumpets but ABSENT in bowls — supporting Bauckham's observation that bowls have a 4+3 rather than 4+1+int+1 pattern.
Seventh trumpet: kingdom declaration, theophany formula occurrence 3, ark revealed¶
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Context: Major structural convergence point. Rev 11:18 elthen he orge ('thy wrath is come') — identical declaration to 6:17 (seal climax), supporting recapitulation. Rev 11:19 Sinai-theophany formula: 5 elements (astrapai, phonai, brontai, seismos, chalaza megale). Ark of covenant visible = Most Holy Place opened = Day of Atonement transition.
Notes: Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 3: 5 elements (astrapai G796, phonai G5456, brontai G1027, seismos G4578, chalaza megale G5464+G3173). Progression from 4 at 8:5 to 5 here. The ophthe (V-API-3S, aorist passive of horao) for the ark = 'was seen/appeared' — same passive construction as semeion ophthe at 12:1, 12:3. Neither en pneumati nor meta tauta marks 11:19 as a division, yet sanctuary progression and theophany formula place a major transition here.
Semeion ophthe: woman sign, chronological regression proof¶
And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne.
Context: Rev 12:1 semeion mega ophthe (V-API-3S) — passive voice: 'a great sign appeared/was seen.' Distinct from kai eidon (active: 'I saw'). Rev 12:3 kai ophthe allo semeion — second sign appeared. Rev 12:5 narrates Christ's birth AFTER the 7th trumpet's kingdom declaration at 11:15 — the single most decisive proof that kai eidon does NOT always signal forward chronological movement.
- σημεῖον (G4592) — N-NSN — Nom Sg N

- γυνὴ (G1135) — N-NSF — Nom Sg F
- περιβεβλημένη (G4016) — V-RPP-NSF — Perf Pass Ptcp Nom Sg F
Notes: Semeion ophthe at 12:1, 12:3 uses aorist PASSIVE indicative 3rd singular of horao. Agency shifted: the sign presents itself rather than John actively seeing it. The perfect passive participle peribeblemene (clothed) at 12:1 = summary tableau over the whole pericope (apocalyptic narrative prolepsis per grammar reference entry).
Kai eidon contemporaneous beasts: chronological neutrality test case¶
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. [13:1] | And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. [13:11]
Context: Both verses use kai eidon (13:1, 13:11). But the second beast operates CONTEMPORANEOUSLY with the first (13:12: 'exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him'). This demonstrates that kai eidon does NOT require chronological sequence between scenes — SP006 from revs-02.
Notes: Key test case for chronological neutrality. kai eidon at 13:11 introduces a beast operating at the SAME TIME as the beast introduced at 13:1. The aorist tense describes completed action without specifying temporal relationship between events.
Kai eidon kai idou: Lamb on Mount Zion — elevated double formula¶
And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
Context: Kai eidon kai idou — elevated structural significance double formula. The Lamb on Mount Zion contrasts with the beasts of ch. 13. Multiple scholars identify the center of Revelation at chs. 12-14.
Notes: One of 9 occurrences of the kai eidon kai idou double formula. Structurally central — follows the beast narrative and precedes the three angels' messages.
Kai eidon kai idou: Son of Man on white cloud — harvest¶
And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud [one] sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
Context: Kai eidon kai idou — elevated double formula. Son of Man on white cloud parallels the Second Coming imagery of 19:11-16. The harvest metaphor (sickle, reap) provides an eschatological climax marker.
Notes: Another kai eidon kai idou occurrence. The harvest scene at the end of the 'Great War section' (11:19-15:4) contributes to the structural centrality of this passage.
Kai eidon allo semeion: hybrid sign-marker with kai eidon¶
And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
Context: Hybrid formula: kai eidon allo semeion — combines the active kai eidon with the semeion vocabulary from 12:1, 12:3. But here John actively sees (eidon, V-2AAI-1S) rather than the sign passively appearing (ophthe). 'Another sign' (allo semeion) explicitly links this to 12:1 and 12:3.

Notes: Semeion catalog: 12:1 semeion mega ophthe (passive); 12:3 ophthe allo semeion (passive); 15:1 eidon allo semeion (active). The shift from passive to active voice at 15:1 may mark a transition point. Three sign markers cluster at the structural center (chs. 12-15).
Meta tauta eidon: temple of tabernacle opened, bowl introduction¶
And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: Meta tauta eidon marks a major structural transition. Temple vocabulary: naos tes skenes tou martyriou (temple of the tabernacle of the testimony). Rev 15:8 intercession denied: 'no man was able to enter' — cf. Lev 16:17. Korner's Vision Block 5 begins here. This is mid-Vision 2 in the en pneumati model.

Bowls: total destruction — no fraction, progressive intensity climax¶
And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead [man]: and every living soul died in the sea. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
Context: Bowls use NO fraction — total destruction. 'Every living soul died' (16:3), 'they became blood' (16:4). Progressive intensity climax: seals 1/4, trumpets 1/3, bowls ALL. The domain correspondence (sea, rivers) matches trumpets exactly.
Notes: Fraction escalation complete: 1/4 (seals 6:8) → 1/3 (trumpets 8:7-12) → total (bowls 16:3-4). Measurable and verifiable from the text.
Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 4: superlative climax¶
And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, [and] so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, [every stone] about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
Context: Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 4: 5+ elements with superlatives. 'Such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great' — superlative intensification. Mountains and islands (16:20) parallel 6:14 — same subjects at climaxes of different sequences.

Progressive intensification: 3 (4:5) → 4 (8:5) → 5 (11:19) → 5+ with superlatives (16:18). Mountains/islands at both 6:14 and 16:20 supports recapitulation.
Angel introduction formula + en pneumati marker 3: wilderness/harlot¶
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Context: Third en pneumati marker. Verbal shift: apenengken me en Pneumati (V-AAI-3S of apophero G667 + P-1AS + PREP G1722 + N-DSN G4151). Angel as subject, John as object. Location: wilderness (eremos G2048). Vision 3 begins. Six+ shared phrases with 21:9-10.
Notes: TM003: grammatical shift from ginomai (Visions 1-2) to apophero (Visions 3-4). TM005: apophero + en Pneumati occurs only at Rev 17:3 and 21:10 in the entire NT. VP001: 6+ shared elements with 21:9-10 = Strong VP. Angel introduction formula parallels 21:9.
Meta tauta eidon: Babylon judgment continues¶
And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
Context: Meta tauta eidon standard formula. Falls within en pneumati's Vision 3 (17:3-21:8). This meta tauta occurrence creates an internal division within Vision 3 that the en pneumati system does not mark.

Meta tauta ekousa: 'heard' instead of 'saw' — variant formula¶
And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:
Context: Meta tauta EKOUSA (V-AAI-1S of akouo G191) instead of meta tauta eidon. Auditory rather than visual. Disputed as a structural meta tauta marker. Falls within Vision 3 (en pneumati model).

Notes: Greek: Meta tauta ekousa hos phonen megalen. Korner does not count this as a meta tauta eidon (since it uses ekousa not eidon). Larsen includes it in his count of 9. Classification: variant formula — whether it functions as a structural marker depends on whether eidon/ekousa are interchangeable in this context.
Dense kai eidon cluster: heaven opened through battle¶
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies [which were] in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all [men, both] free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which [sword] proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
Context: Densest kai eidon concentration. Rev 19:11 kai eidon kai idou (double formula). Rev 19:17 kai eidon. Rev 19:19 kai eidon. This begins the 7-member dense cluster running through 21:1 (TM010). The question: does the dense cluster represent a progressive sequence or could elements be concurrent?
Notes: Rev 19:11 is one of the kai eidon kai idou elevated double formula occurrences. Heaven 'opened' (eneogmenon, perfect passive participle) echoes 4:1's 'opened door.' Dense cluster: 19:11, 19:17, 19:19, 20:1, 20:4, 20:11-12, 21:1.
Dense kai eidon cluster continues: angel, thrones, millennium¶
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Context: Rev 20:1 kai eidon. Rev 20:3 contains the disputed meta tauta: 'after that (meta tauta) he must be loosed a little season.' Rev 20:4 kai eidon. IC005 vs IC006: competing chronological claims about 20:1.
Notes: Rev 20:3 meta tauta: Greek meta tauta dei luthenai auton mikron chronon. This is a non-formulaic temporal reference — 'after these things he must be released' — referring to a future event within the narrative, not a vision-transition marker. Larsen includes it; most scholars exclude it from the structural meta tauta count.
Dense kai eidon: great white throne, judgment¶
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Context: Two kai eidon in rapid succession: 20:11 and 20:12. Great white throne judgment parallels Dan 7:9 (Ancient of Days, judgment seated, books opened). Part of the dense 7-member chain.
Notes: Dan 7:9 template: throne, judgment, books opened. The dense kai eidon cluster may represent chronological progression (IC005) or the same events from different angles (IC006).
Kai eidon: new heaven and new earth — final in dense cluster¶
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Context: Rev 21:1 kai eidon — final occurrence in the dense 7-member cluster (19:11-21:1). New Jerusalem descending transitions from Vision 3 to Vision 4 territory in the en pneumati model. Rev 21:2 continues the new creation theme.
Notes: Some scholars place Vision 4 boundary here (21:1) rather than at 21:9-10 where the final en pneumati marker occurs. The transition zone (21:1-8) is structurally ambiguous.
Angel introduction formula + en pneumati marker 4: high mountain/bride¶
And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Context: Fourth en pneumati marker. Mirrors 17:1-3 exactly: (1) one of seven angels with bowls, (2) 'Come hither, I will shew thee,' (3) female figure (bride vs harlot), (4) apenengken me en Pneumati, (5) specific location (mountain vs wilderness), (6) the great city. VP001: 6+ shared elements = Strong VP.
Notes: Greek: kai apenengken me en Pneumati epi oros mega kai hypselon. Identical verb form to 17:3 (apenengken, V-AAI-3S of apophero G667). SP002: mirrored pair of Visions 3-4. AN001: parallels Ezek 40:2 (high mountain, city, measuring).
Epilogue: inclusio with Prologue¶
And he said unto me, These sayings [are] faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Behold, I come quickly: blessed [is] he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you all. Amen.
Context: Epilogue forming inclusio with Prologue (1:1-8). VP003: 6+ shared verbal elements. Shared: angel/servants (22:6/1:1), prophecy words (22:7,10,18/1:3), blessed pronouncement (22:7,14/1:3), Alpha-Omega (22:13/1:8), I come quickly (22:7,12,20/1:7), churches (22:16/1:4,11), testimony of Jesus (22:16,20/1:2). SP003: Strong inclusio validation.
Notes: The inclusio establishes the vision report (1:9-22:5) as a single literary unit framed by matching bookends. Rev 22:16 contains the only post-ch.3 ekklesia occurrence ('testify unto you these things in the churches'), creating a bookend with the seven churches of chs. 1-3.
Sinai theophany source text: thunders, lightnings, trumpet, earthquake¶
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses [up] to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
Context: OT source for Revelation's Sinai-theophany formula. Thunders (H6963 qolot), lightnings (H1300 baraq), voice of trumpet (H6963 qol + H7782 shophar), mountain quaked (H2729 charad). The identical vocabulary cluster recurs at all four theophany formula points in Revelation.
Notes: AN-tier: Strong allusion from Rev 4:5/8:5/11:19/16:18 to Exo 19:16-18. Hicks: 'the language of divine presence and action; it is the language of Sinai.' Covenantal judgment context.
Ezekiel Spirit-transport: model for Revelation's en pneumati/apophero pattern¶
Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, [saying], Blessed [be] the glory of the LORD from his place. [I heard] also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a noise of a great rushing. So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.
Context: First of Ezekiel's Spirit-transport passages. 'The spirit took me up' — the Spirit as agent of prophetic relocation. Parallels Rev 17:3 and 21:10 where the angel carries John away in the Spirit (apophero).
Notes: Ezekiel Spirit-transport passages: 3:12-14, 8:3, 11:24, 37:1, 40:2, 43:5. Bandy identifies the Ezekiel parallel as part of the intertextual structural layer.
Ezekiel Spirit-transport to Jerusalem: location-specific vision¶
And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north; where [was] the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy.
Context: Spirit-transport to a specific location (Jerusalem) for a specific vision. Parallels Revelation's location-paired en pneumati markers.
Notes: 'In the visions of God' — visionary transport to a judgment scene at Jerusalem's temple. Pattern: Spirit lifts → specific location → judgment vision.
Ezekiel Spirit-transport to high mountain: direct parallel to Rev 21:10¶
In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which [was] as the frame of a city on the south.
Context: Ezekiel set upon 'a very high mountain' where he sees a temple-city — directly paralleling Rev 21:10 (high mountain, city, measuring). Cross-testament parallel tool confirms: Ezek 40:2 scores 0.379 hybrid against Rev 21:10.
Notes: AN001 from revs-01: Rev 21:10-15 parallels Ezek 40:2-3. Both have: (1) Spirit-transport, (2) high mountain, (3) city/temple structure, (4) measuring with a reed. Strong allusion.
Daniel vision-report formulas: OT precedent for seeing language¶
Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. [7:2] | I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire. [7:9]
Context: Daniel's vision-report seeing language provides OT precedent for Revelation's kai eidon system. Dan 7:9 throne-judgment vision is the template for Rev 20:11-13 (great white throne, judgment, books).
Notes: Daniel's four recapitulating prophetic sequences (chs. 2, 7, 8-9, 10-12) provide the structural model that EGW identifies as parallel to Revelation's structure.
Isaiah throne-room vision: OT vision-report seeing language¶
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
Context: Isaiah's throne-room vision uses 'I saw' (Hebrew chazah) — the OT equivalent of John's kai eidon. Throne + temple setting parallels Rev 4:1-5:14.
Notes: OT vision-report genre precedent. The 'seeing' verbs in Hebrew prophetic literature establish the convention that Revelation inherits.
Meta tauta in temporal framework: past/present/future¶
Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
Context: Meta tauta appears as part of the temporal framework: ha eides (what you saw — past), ha eisin (what is — present), ha mellei genesthai meta tauta (what shall be hereafter — future). This is NOT a structural-transition formula but a temporal categorization of the vision's content.

Notes: Greek: graphon oun ha eides kai ha eisin kai ha mellei genesthai meta tauta. The meta tauta here is embedded within a clause governed by mellei (is about to) and genesthai (to happen) — it describes future events, not a vision-transition. Larsen includes this in his count of 9.
Mountains and islands: same subjects at climaxes of different sequences¶
And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. [6:14] | And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. [16:20]
Context: Mountains and islands appear at the climax of the seal sequence (6:14) and the climax of the bowl sequence (16:20). The same cosmic imagery at climaxes of two different sequences supports recapitulation — the same eschatological event described from different perspectives.
Notes: 6:14 'moved out of their places' vs 16:20 'fled away/were not found' — intensification between occurrences. Combined with the elthen he orge formula at 6:17 and 11:18, this is strong evidence for overlapping sequences.
Elthen he orge: identical wrath declaration at sequence climaxes¶
For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? [6:17] | And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged... [11:18]
Context: Grammatically identical declaration of wrath arrival at seal climax (6:17) and trumpet climax (11:18). Both use elthen he orge — aorist of erchomai + article + orge. The same eschatological event declared at the climax of two parallel sequences.
Notes: Key recapitulation evidence: identical formula at the climax of two different judgment sequences. If the seals and trumpets were strictly sequential, the wrath would 'come' twice.
First en pneumati marker: egenomen en pneumati at Patmos¶
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
Context: Patmos setting. First of four en pneumati markers dividing Revelation into four major visions. John uses egenomen en pneumati (ginomai G1096, aorist middle indicative 1st singular). Pneuma is anarthrous dative singular neuter. Paired with trumpet voice.

Second en pneumati marker: egenomen en pneumati in heaven¶
And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne.

Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 1: three elements¶
And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
Context: Throne room scene. First occurrence of the Sinai-theophany formula. Three elements: astrapai (lightnings G796), brontai (thunderings G1027), phonai (voices G5456). No earthquake or hail yet — progressive intensification begins at the base level.

Kai eidon: strong angel proclaiming¶
And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
Context: Throne room scene continues. Kai eidon (and I saw) introduces a strong angel. The formula kai eidon angelon ischuron follows the standard structural marker pattern.

And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Context: Throne room. Kai eidon ... kai idou double formula marks elevated structural significance. Introduces the Lamb — the central Christological figure of the vision. The N1904 text reads Kai eidon en meso ... Arnion hestekos hos esphagmenon.

Notes: Elevated structural marker: double formula kai eidon + (implied) kai idou. The KJV 'I beheld, and, lo' renders the structural elevation. Seven horns and seven eyes = seven Spirits of God — connects to 4:5 throne room pneuma vocabulary.
Kai eidon: angelic hosts surrounding throne¶
And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
Context: Throne room doxology. Kai eidon kai ekousa — double perception formula (seeing and hearing). Introduces the vast angelic host. KJV 'I beheld' for eidon.
- kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon, horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. The kai eidon kai ekousa combination parallels Rev 8:13 (kai eidon kai ekousa). Not a major structural boundary but introduces the climactic doxology of the throne room scene.
Kai eidon kai idou: third seal — black horse¶
And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
Context: Third seal opening. Kai eidon kai idou double formula — elevated structural significance within the seal sequence. Black horse with balances. Part of the seal progression pattern.
- kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon, horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. Double formula kai eidon kai idou as in 6:2 and 6:8. The seal openings follow a consistent pattern: seal opened + living creature says 'Come' + kai eidon/kai eidon kai idou + horse description.
Kai eidon: fifth seal — altar souls, word of God and testimony¶
And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
Context: Fifth seal. Pattern breaks: no horse, no living creature command. Eidon without preceding kai in the standard position — the eidon follows the temporal clause. Souls under the altar slain for the word of God and testimony.
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. The fifth seal breaks the four-horsemen pattern. Eidon appears after the temporal clause (hote enoixen). 'Word of God and testimony' echoes 1:2, 1:9, and anticipates 12:11, 12:17, 20:4.
Kai eidon: sixth seal — great earthquake¶
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
Context: Sixth seal. Kai eidon with temporal clause (hote enoixen). Great earthquake (seismos megas) — connects to Sinai-theophany formula vocabulary. Cosmic upheaval: sun, moon, stars.
- Kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
- seismos (G4578) — N-NSM — Nom Sg M
- egeneto, (G1096) — V-2ADI-3S — Aor Mid Ind Sg thirdPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. Seismos megas links to the Sinai-theophany formula (8:5, 11:19, 16:18). The sixth seal cosmic signs parallel the seventh bowl (16:17-21) — mountains and islands appear at both 6:14 and 16:20.
Seventh seal silence; kai eidon introduces trumpet angels¶
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.
Context: Seventh seal opening followed immediately by kai eidon introducing the seven trumpet angels. Potential telescoping point: the seventh seal contains/introduces the trumpets. Half-hour silence is structurally unique.
- egeneto (G1096) — V-2ADI-3S — Aor Mid Ind Sg thirdPers
- sige (G4602) — N-NSF — Nom Sg F
Notes: Critical structural juncture. If 8:1 concludes the seals and 8:2 begins the trumpets, this is a telescoping point (Bauckham). The kai eidon at 8:2 may introduce a new sequence embedded within the seventh seal. Ginomai (egeneto) at 8:1 connects to the en pneumati formula vocabulary.
Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 2: four elements¶
And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast [it] into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
Context: Censer cast to earth. Second Sinai-theophany occurrence. Four elements: phonai (voices), brontai (thunderings), astrapai (lightnings), seismos (earthquake). Order differs from 4:5. Progression from 3 to 4 elements.
- egenonto (G1096) — V-2ADI-3P — Aor Mid Ind Pl thirdPers

- phonai (G5456) — N-NPF — Nom Pl F
- astrapai (G796) — N-NPF — Nom Pl F

Notes: Structural marker: Sinai-theophany occurrence 2. Progression: 3 elements (4:5) -> 4 elements (8:5). Earthquake added. Order is voices-thunderings-lightnings-earthquake (differs from 4:5 lightnings-thunderings-voices). Marks transition between seals/censer scene and trumpet sequence.
Kai eidon: angel/eagle woe announcement¶
And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
Context: Between fourth and fifth trumpets. Kai eidon kai ekousa — double perception formula. Angel (some MSS: eagle/aetos) flying in midheaven. Triple woe announcement divides trumpets into 4+3.
- Kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon, horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. The N1904 text reads aetou (eagle) not angelou (angel) — textual variant. Kai eidon kai ekousa double formula as in 5:11. The woe announcement creates an internal structural division within the trumpet sequence.
Kai eidon with intervening words: horses in the vision¶
And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses [were] as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
Context: Sixth trumpet. Kai outos eidon — intervening adverb outos (thus) between kai and eidon. Korner identifies this as one of 5 exceptions where intervening words indicate concurrent description rather than new vision introduction.
- kai (G2532) — CONJ — houtos houto G3779 [ADV]
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. One of Korner's 5 intervening-word exceptions (1:17, 9:17, 10:5, 13:2, 21:22). The intervening outos signals that this is a concurrent description of the 6th trumpet vision, not a new structural transition.
Kai eidon with intervening words: angel I saw standing¶
And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,
Context: Interlude between 6th and 7th trumpets. Kai ho angelos hon eidon — relative clause with intervening words. Not a new vision introduction but a reference back to the angel introduced at 10:1.
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. One of Korner's 5 intervening-word exceptions. The relative clause hon eidon (whom I saw) refers back to the angel introduced at 10:1, providing concurrent description rather than structural transition.
Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 3: five elements, ark visible¶
And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Context: Seventh trumpet climax. Third Sinai-theophany occurrence. Five elements: astrapai (lightnings), phonai (voices), brontai (thunderings), seismos (earthquake), chalaza megale (great hail). Major structural pivot: ark visible = Most Holy Place opened.

- brontai (G1027) — N-NPF — Nom Pl F
- seismos (G4578) — N-NSM — Nom Sg M
- chalaza (G5464) — N-NSF — Nom Sg F
Notes: Critical structural marker. Progression: 3 (4:5) -> 4 (8:5) -> 5 (11:19) elements. Hail added. The naos (G3485 temple) opened and the ark of the covenant visible — sanctuary progression reaches the Most Holy Place. Neither en pneumati nor meta tauta marks this as a division, yet the Sinai-theophany formula and sanctuary progression place a major transition here.
Semeion ophthe: second sign — great red dragon¶
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Context: Second semeion ophthe marker. Ophthe (G3708 horao, aorist passive indicative) — passive voice: the sign 'was seen/appeared' rather than John actively seeing. Dragon with seven heads (kephale G2776) and ten horns.
- ophthe (G3708) — V-API-3S — Aor Pass Ind Sg thirdPers
- semeion (G4592) — N-NSN — Nom Sg N
- kephalas (G2776) — N-APF — Acc Pl F
Notes: Structural marker: semeion ophthe (passive). Distinct from kai eidon (active). The passive construction ophthe (was seen) shifts agency — the sign presents itself. Kai idou follows immediately. Seven heads/ten horns vocabulary links to 13:1, 17:3, 17:7.
Kai eidon with intervening words: beast description¶
And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
Context: Sea beast description. Kai to therion ho eidon — intervening words between kai and eidon. Not a new vision introduction but a concurrent description of the beast introduced at 13:1.
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. One of Korner's 5 intervening-word exceptions. The relative clause ho eidon (which I saw) provides concurrent description of the beast from 13:1. Daniel 7 composite beast imagery (leopard/bear/lion).
Kai eidon: head wound healed¶
And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
Context: Continuation of sea beast description. The text does not begin with kai eidon in the standard structural sense — the Greek starts with kai mian ek ton kephalon (and one of his heads). The eidon is not present in this verse in N1904.
- kephalon (G2776) — N-GPF — Gen Pl F
- esphagmenen (G4969) — V-RPP-ASF — Perf Pass Ptcp Acc Sg F
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. Kephale (G2776) wound passage. The wounded head (kephalon ... hos esphagmenen) uses the same vocabulary as the slain Lamb (5:6 hos esphagmenon) — structural verbal parallel connecting the beast to a parody of Christ.
Kai eidon: angel with everlasting gospel — first angel's message¶
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Context: First angel's message. Kai eidon allon angelon — standard structural marker introducing a new scene. Angel flying in midheaven with the everlasting gospel.
- Kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. Standard kai eidon introducing a major new scene — the three angels' messages (14:6-12). Allon angelon (another angel) connects to the series of angelic figures introduced throughout Revelation.
Kai eidon: sea of glass mingled with fire¶
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, [and] over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
Context: Victorious saints scene. Kai eidon hos thalassan hualinen — standard kai eidon. Sea of glass (cf. 4:6) now mingled with fire. Victory over the beast/image/mark.
- Kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. The sea of glass appears at 4:6 (throne room) and here at 15:2 — intratextual link connecting the throne room introduction to this scene. May function as a victorious-introduction scene (Strand).
No man able to enter temple: intercession denied¶
And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: Temple filled with smoke/glory. No man able to enter the naos (G3485) until the seven plagues are completed. Structural significance: parallels Lev 16:17 (no man in the tabernacle when high priest makes atonement).
- naos (G3485) — N-NSM — Nom Sg M
Notes: Structural significance: the naos is inaccessible during the seven last plagues. This suggests the bowls represent a period when intercession has ceased — a major structural-theological observation. The naos vocabulary connects to 11:19 (naos opened, ark visible) and 21:22 (no naos in New Jerusalem).
Kai eidon: three unclean spirits from dragon/beast/false prophet¶
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs [come] out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
Context: Sixth bowl. Kai eidon — standard structural marker. Three unclean spirits (pneumata G4151 — same word as in en pneumati) from the unholy trinity: dragon, beast, false prophet.
- Kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
- pneumata (G4151) — N-APN — Acc Pl N
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. The pneumata akatharta (unclean spirits) use the same root word pneuma as the en pneumati structural formula — an ironic contrast between the Spirit that transports John and the spirits that deceive the nations.
Seventh bowl: 'It is done' — Sinai-theophany formula occurrence 4¶
And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
Context: Seventh bowl climax. 'It is done' (Gegonen, G1096 ginomai — same verb as en pneumati formula). Fourth Sinai-theophany occurrence with superlatives. Elements: phonai (voices), brontai (thunders), astrapai (lightnings), seismos megas (great earthquake), chalaza megale (great hail, talent-weight).
- naou (G3485) — N-GSM — Gen Sg M
- Gegonen. (G1096) — V-2RAI-3S — Perf Act Ind Sg thirdPers
Notes: Structural marker: Sinai-theophany occurrence 4 — climactic. Progressive intensification reaches maximum: 3 (4:5) -> 4 (8:5) -> 5 (11:19) -> 5+ with superlatives (16:18-21). Gegonen (It is done) uses ginomai (G1096), the same verb as the en pneumati formula at 1:10 and 4:2. Mountains and islands at 16:20 parallel 6:14 — same subjects at different sequence climaxes.
Third en pneumati marker: apenengken me en pneumati to wilderness¶
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Context: Wilderness location. Third en pneumati marker. Formula shifts from ginomai (Visions 1-2) to apophero (G667): apenengken me en pneumati — 'he carried me away in the Spirit.' Angel as subject. Kai eidon follows immediately.

- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
- kephalas (G2776) — N-APF — Acc Pl F
Notes: Structural marker: en pneumati Vision 3 (17:3-21:8). Verb shifts to apophero (G667, aorist active indicative 3rd singular) — the angel carries John, not John becoming in the Spirit. Mirrors 21:10 exactly. Part of the two-cities parallel with 21:9-10. Kai eidon introduces the woman/beast vision.
Kai eidon with intervening words: woman drunk with blood¶
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
Context: Continuation of Babylon vision. Kai eidon ten gunaika — standard kai eidon but with a second eidon later (idon authen — 'when I saw her'). The double seeing (eidon ... idon) creates an intervening-words variant.
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. Contains double eidon: kai eidon ... ethaumasa idon. The participle idon (having seen) is distinct from the finite eidon. John's reaction (ethaumasa — 'I wondered') is unique among kai eidon passages.
Meta tauta: post-millennium release — non-formulaic usage¶
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Context: Millennium binding scene. Meta tauta in the phrase 'after that he must be loosed' — but this is not meta tauta eidon. It refers to a future event (post-millennium release), not a vision transition. Larsen includes it in his meta tauta count; most scholars distinguish it as non-formulaic.
- meta (G3326) — PREP — tauta houtos G3778 [D-APN] Acc Pl N
- dei (G1163) — V-PAI-3S — Pres Act Ind Sg thirdPers
Notes: Disputed meta tauta occurrence. The Greek meta tauta dei lythenai auton — 'after these things it is necessary for him to be loosed.' This is a temporal reference within the narrative, not a vision-transition formula. No eidon or ekousa follows. Distinguishing formulaic from non-formulaic meta tauta is critical for structural analysis.
Kai eidon: thrones, judgment, beheaded souls¶
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Context: Millennium scene. Kai eidon thronous — standard structural marker introducing the throne/judgment scene. Contains a second implied eidon (KJV '[I saw] the souls'). Word of God and testimony of Jesus echoes 1:2, 1:9, 6:9, 12:17.
- Kai (G2532) — CONJ — eidon horao G3708 [V-2AAI-1S] Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Part of the dense kai eidon chain (19:11-21:1). Kai eidon introduces thrones and judgment. The souls beheaded 'for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God' creates a verbal chain with 1:2, 1:9, 6:9, 12:11, 12:17 — an intratextual structural link across the entire book.
New Jerusalem descending: Vision 3-to-4 transition territory¶
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Context: New Jerusalem first appearance. Kai ... eidon with 'I John' intervening (ego Ioannes). The holy city descends before the fourth en pneumati marker at 21:10, creating a structural ambiguity: does New Jerusalem belong to Vision 3 or Vision 4?
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Structurally ambiguous verse. The en pneumati model places the Vision 3/4 boundary at 21:10, but the New Jerusalem appears at 21:2 — before the fourth en pneumati marker. This creates structural overlap. Kai ... eidon with 'I John' intervening is a distinctive formula used only here and at 1:9.
Fourth en pneumati marker: apenengken me en pneumati to high mountain¶
And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Context: Great and high mountain location. Fourth en pneumati marker. Identical formula to 17:3: apenengken me en pneumati (apophero G667). Angel carries John to a high mountain (cf. Ezek 40:2). Part of the two-cities parallel.
- apenegken (G667) — V-AAI-3S — Aor Act Ind Sg thirdPers
- en (G1722) — PREP — Pneumati pneuma G4151 [N-DSN] Dat Sg N
Notes: Structural marker: en pneumati Vision 4 (21:10-22:5). Mirrors 17:3 exactly in verb (apophero), construction (apenengken me en pneumati), and angel-as-subject pattern. Wilderness (17:3) vs. high mountain (21:10) — deliberate contrast. Ezekiel parallel: Ezek 40:2 (very high mountain, city vision).
Kai eidon with structural significance: no temple therein¶
And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
Context: New Jerusalem description. Kai naon ouk eidon en aute — 'and a temple I did not see in it.' Intervening words (naon ouk before eidon). One of Korner's 5 exceptions. Structurally significant: the sanctuary progression that began at 1:12 (lampstands) ends here — no naos needed because God and the Lamb ARE the temple.
- naon (G3485) — N-ASM — Acc Sg M
- eidon (G3708) — V-2AAI-1S — Aor Act Ind Sg firstPers
Notes: Supporting verse for kai eidon catalog. One of Korner's 5 intervening-word exceptions. Negative eidon: 'I did NOT see a temple.' The naos (G3485) vocabulary progression: temple opened (11:19) -> temple filled with smoke (15:8) -> no temple (21:22). Sanctuary progression complete.
Sinai theophany source: thunders, lightnings, voice, earthquake¶
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
Context: Sinai theophany — the OT source text for Revelation's theophany formula. Elements present: thunders (qolot), lightnings (beraqim), voice of trumpet, thick cloud, smoke, fire, earthquake (quaked greatly). These same elements recur at Rev 4:5, 8:5, 11:19, 16:18.
Notes: Primary OT source for the Sinai-theophany formula in Revelation. The vocabulary maps: thunders -> brontai (G1027), lightnings -> astrapai (G796), voice -> phonai (G5456), earthquake -> seismos (G4578). Revelation adds hail (chalaza G5464) as a fifth element not present in the Exodus account.
Sinai theophany: people witnessed thunderings, lightnings, trumpet¶
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw [it], they removed, and stood afar off.
Context: The people's experience of the Sinai theophany. They 'saw' the thunderings and lightnings — the same vocabulary as the Revelation theophany formula. The people's fearful withdrawal contrasts with John's Spirit-transported approach.
Notes: Supporting OT text for the Sinai-theophany formula. The people 'saw' (ra'ah) the theophanic manifestation. In Revelation, John also 'sees' (horao/eidon) the theophany at each occurrence. The people stood afar off; John is brought near by the Spirit.
Ezekiel Spirit-transport: spirit took me up into Chaldea¶
Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.
Context: Ezekiel's Spirit-transport. The spirit 'took me up' (nasa') and 'brought me' (bo') in a vision by the Spirit of God. Location-specific transport (to Chaldea). The vision concluding formula ('went up from me') marks the end of the visionary experience.
Notes: Ezekiel Spirit-transport parallel. Double Spirit reference: 'the spirit took me up' and 'by the Spirit of God' — the ruach functions both as transport agent and as the visionary medium. Parallels the en pneumati formula in Revelation where pneuma serves both functions.
Ezekiel Spirit-transport: carried me out in the spirit of the LORD¶
The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which [was] full of bones,
Context: Valley of dry bones vision. 'The hand of the LORD was upon me' + 'carried me out in the spirit of the LORD' — combines the 'hand of the LORD' formula with Spirit-transport. Location: valley full of bones.
Notes: Ezekiel Spirit-transport parallel. 'Carried me out in the spirit of the LORD' (hotsi'ani beruach YHWH) — the carrying verb + in the spirit construction parallels Revelation's apophero + en pneumati at 17:3 and 21:10. Location-specific transport to a vision scene.
