Word Studies¶
Question¶
What is the seven-element template that structures each letter to the seven churches (address, self-identification, commendation, rebuke, exhortation, promise, ear formula)? Document the template elements in each letter. What does the ear/overcomer reversal between the first three and last four letters reveal — in letters 1-3 the ear formula comes before the overcomer promise; in letters 4-7 the overcomer promise comes before the ear formula? What does this 3+4 structural division signify? Does it correspond to any other 3+4 or 4+3 patterns in Revelation?

G3529 — nike¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3529-nike.md
Occurrences: 1
Victory (noun). Hapax legomenon at 1 John 5:4: 'this is the victory (nike) that overcometh (nikao) the world, even our faith.' Cognate of nikao (G3528) and nikos (G3534).
Semantic categories: victory, conquest
Key verses: 1 John 5:4

O grave, where is thy victory? ...thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.'
Semantic categories: victory, conquest, eschatological triumph
Key verses: 1 Cor 15:54, 1 Cor 15:55, 1 Cor 15:57, Matt 12:20

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3004-lego.md
Occurrences: 1349
To say, speak, declare. Most common verb of speech in the NT (1244+ verses). In the letters, tade legei ('these things saith') is the invariable formula introducing each Christological self-identification. The formula echoes the LXX prophetic formula tade legei Kurios (thus saith the LORD), rendering Hebrew koh amar YHWH. Over 400 OT occurrences of the prophetic messenger formula.
Semantic categories: speech, declaration, prophetic formula, naming
Key verses: Rev 2:1, Rev 2:8, Rev 2:12, Rev 2:18, Rev 3:1, Rev 3:7, Rev 3:14

G1492 — oida¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1492-oida.md
Occurrences: 334
To know intuitively, to perceive (perfect tense functioning as present). Distinguished from ginosko (G1097, experiential knowledge). In the letters, oida introduces the 'I know' assessment formula: 'oida ta erga sou' (I know thy works) in all seven letters. The formula's function shifts: commendatory in Ephesus-Thyatira, transitioning to accusatory in Sardis and Laodicea.
Semantic categories: intuitive knowledge, divine omniscience, assessment
Key verses: Rev 2:2, Rev 2:9, Rev 2:13, Rev 2:19, Rev 3:1, Rev 3:8, Rev 3:15
Relevance: One of three invariable template elements. Its valence shift from commendatory to accusatory across the seven letters is a structural observation.
G3340 — metanoeo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3340-metanoeo.md
Occurrences: 34
To repent, change one's mind. 34 NT occurrences (32 unique verses, 36 tokens). 10 in Revelation (highest density at 2.5 per 100 verses). Key verses: Rev 2:5, Rev 2:16, Rev 2:21, Rev 3:3, Rev 3:19
Relevance: Metanoeo in exactly 5 of 7 letters, correlating with rebuke presence (TM039). Its absence from Smyrna and Philadelphia confirms these as the two rebuke-free letters. The verb also appears in judgment contexts (9:20-21, 16:9,11) where repentance is refused.
G4151 — pneuma¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4151-pneuma.md
Occurrences: 385
Spirit, breath, wind. In the ear formula, 'to Pneuma' (articular, nominative, personal agent) — 'what THE Spirit saith unto the churches.' This is grammatically distinct from the en pneumati structural markers (anarthrous, dative, visionary domain) per revs2-01. The Spirit is the speaking agent in the ear formula, addressing all churches collectively.
Semantic categories: Holy Spirit, prophetic speech, divine agent
Key verses: Rev 2:7, Rev 2:11, Rev 2:17, Rev 2:29, Rev 3:6, Rev 3:13, Rev 3:22
Relevance: The Spirit/churches clause (ti to Pneuma legei tais ekklesiais) is confined to the seven ear formula occurrences in chs 2-3. It is ABSENT from Rev 13:9's modified formula. This confinement is a structural marker of the letter section.

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1577-ekklesia.md
Occurrences: 118
Church, assembly, congregation. 115 unique verses, 118 tokens, 19 books. In Revelation: 19 occurrences in chs 1-3, 1 in epilogue (22:16), completely absent from Visions 2-4. This distribution is a major structural marker per revs2-01. Derives from ek (out of) + kaleo (to call) — 'called out assembly.' LXX translates Hebrew qahal with ekklesia.
Semantic categories: local congregation, universal church, prophetic address
Key verses: Rev 1:4, Rev 1:11, Rev 1:20, Rev 2:1, Rev 2:7, Rev 2:23, Rev 22:16
Relevance: The ekklesia distribution (19x in chs 1-3, absent from Visions 2-4, reappearing at 22:16) creates an inclusio framing the entire book. The word appears in every ear formula ('unto the churches') and vanishes once the letters end.
G228 — alethinos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G228-alethinos.md
Occurrences: 27
True, genuine, real. 27 tokens in 25 verses, 80% in Johannine literature. In the letters: Philadelphia 'he that is true' (3:7, ho alethinos) and Laodicea 'faithful and true witness' (3:14, pistos kai alethinos). Also at 6:10 ('holy and true') in the martyrs' cry. Relevance: Two letter self-IDs use alethinos: Philadelphia (3:7) and Laodicea (3:14). The word connects to the 'faithful and true' thread across Revelation (1:5, 3:14, 19:11, 21:5, 22:6).
G5207 — huios¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5207-huios.md
Occurrences: 382
Son. Thyatira's self-ID: 'ho huios tou theou' (the Son of God, 2:18) — the ONLY letter using this title. All other letters use descriptive phrases from Rev 1:12-18. The Son of God title connects to Ps 2:7 ('Thou art my Son') which is also the source of Thyatira's rod-of-iron overcomer promise (2:27).
Semantic categories: divine sonship, messianic title, Christological designation
Key verses: Rev 2:18, Rev 21:7
Relevance: Thyatira's unique Son of God title (TM044) is one of the markers of its structural centrality. The title connects Thyatira's self-ID (2:18) to Thyatira's overcomer promise (2:27 via Ps 2:7-9) and to the universal promise (21:7 'he shall be my son').
G2222 — zoe¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2222-zoe.md
Occurrences: 134
Life. Appears in three letter promises: tree of life (Ephesus 2:7, xulon tes zoes), crown of life (Smyrna 2:10, stephanos tes zoes), book of life (Sardis 3:5, biblos tes zoes). Three distinct 'of life' constructs using the same genitive tes zoes.
Semantic categories: eternal life, reward imagery, eschatological promise
Key verses: Rev 2:7, Rev 2:10, Rev 3:5, Rev 20:12, Rev 22:2

G2937 — ktisis¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2937-ktisis.md
Occurrences: 19
Creation, creature. In the letters: Laodicea's self-ID 'the beginning of the creation of God' (he arche tes ktiseos tou theou, 3:14). This title is NOT drawn from Rev 1:12-18 — it stands outside the commissioning vision.
Semantic categories: creation, creature, cosmological origin
Key verses: Rev 3:14
Relevance: Part of Laodicea's unique triple self-ID (Amen + faithful/true witness + beginning of creation). The phrase's meaning (source/ruler of creation vs. first created being) is a classic interpretive question.
G3144 — martys¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3144-martys.md
Occurrences: 34
Witness, martyr. In the letters: Laodicea self-ID 'faithful and true witness' (ho martys ho pistos kai alethinos, 3:14); Antipas 'my faithful martyr' (ho martys mou ho pistos, 2:13). Christ as faithful witness at 1:5. The same vocabulary (martys + pistos) applied to both Christ and Antipas.
Semantic categories: witness, testimony, martyrdom
Key verses: Rev 1:5, Rev 2:13, Rev 3:14
Relevance: The martys+pistos formula links Laodicea's self-ID (3:14) to Christ's introduction (1:5) and to Antipas in Pergamos (2:13). The witness vocabulary threads through the letter section.

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4567-satanas.md
Occurrences: 36
Satan, adversary. In the letters: 'synagogue of Satan' (Smyrna 2:9, Philadelphia 3:9 — exclusive to this pair, TM041); 'Satan's seat/throne' (Pergamos 2:13); 'depths of Satan' (Thyatira 2:24). Key verses: Rev 2:9, Rev 2:13, Rev 2:24, Rev 3:9
Relevance: Satan appears in 4 of 7 letters. The synagogue of Satan formula (G4864+G4567) is exclusive to the Smyrna-Philadelphia pair, providing the strongest VP evidence for their chiastic pairing (B-B').
G746 — arche¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G746-arche.md
Occurrences: 58
Beginning, ruler, principality. In the letters: Laodicea's self-ID 'the beginning of the creation of God' (he arche tes ktiseos tou theou, 3:14). Arche can mean 'beginning' (temporal origin) or 'ruler/chief' (authority) — both readings are grammatically possible.
Semantic categories: beginning, ruler, origin, principality
Key verses: Rev 3:14, Rev 21:6, Rev 22:13
Relevance: Part of Laodicea's unique self-ID. The arche+ktisis combination at 3:14 stands outside the Rev 1:12-18 vision, making it one of the markers that Laodicea's self-ID is structurally distinct.
G281 — amen¶
Occurrences: 152
Amen, truly, verily. 152 NT occurrences: 64 'Verily,' 51 'Amen,' 37 'verily.' In the letters: Laodicea's self-ID 'the Amen' (ho Amen, 3:14) — Christ as the personified Amen, the embodiment of divine faithfulness. The only letter using a Hebrew loanword as a Christological title. Also at 1:6,7 (doxological amens) and 22:20,21 (closing amens).
Semantic categories: affirmation, divine faithfulness, Christological title
Key verses: Rev 3:14, Rev 1:6-7, Rev 22:20-21
Relevance: Laodicea's unique 'the Amen' title (ho Amen) is structurally notable — it uses a title NOT found in the Rev 1 commissioning vision. This is part of the evidence that Laodicea's self-ID is the most independent of the seven.
G191 — akouo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G191-akouo.md
Occurrences: 454
To hear, listen, understand. 454 NT occurrences. In Revelation: 46 occurrences (10.5 per 100 verses — highest density). Relevance: Core verb in the ear formula. Akousato appears 8 times in Revelation (7 in letters + 1 at 13:9). The aorist imperative mood makes each hearing call a decisive, non-negotiable command — consistent with the prophetic oracle function.
G3775 — ous¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3775-ous.md
Occurrences: 37
Ear (neuter noun). 37 NT occurrences. In Revelation: 8 occurrences (7 in ear formula + 1 at 13:9). Notably SINGULAR (ous, accusative neuter singular) in Revelation vs PLURAL (ota, accusative neuter plural) in the Synoptic parallels (Matt 11:15, 13:9, etc.). This is a deliberate Johannine modification.
Semantic categories: spiritual receptivity, prophetic hearing, physical ear
Key verses: Rev 2:7, Rev 2:11, Rev 2:17, Rev 2:29, Rev 3:6, Rev 3:13, Rev 3:22, Rev 13:9
Relevance: The singular ous vs plural ota distinction between Revelation and the Synoptics is a textual marker (TM). The singular may emphasize individual responsibility: each person individually called to hear.
G32 — aggelos¶
Occurrences: 186
Angel, messenger. 186 NT occurrences: 71 'angel,' 61 'angels,' 3 'messenger.' In the letters: 'to the angel of the church in [city]' (to aggelo tes en [city] ekklesias) — address formula in all seven letters. The identity of the 'angel' is debated: guardian angel, human messenger/bishop, or heavenly representative of the church.
Semantic categories: heavenly being, messenger, church representative
Key verses: Rev 1:20, Rev 2:1, Rev 2:8, Rev 2:12, Rev 2:18, Rev 3:1, Rev 3:7, Rev 3:14
Relevance: The aggelos address is an invariable element in the letter template. The dative 'to aggelo' identifies the recipient of each letter. Per 1:20, the seven stars = the seven angels of the seven churches.

Occurrences: 176
Work, deed, action. 176 tokens across 161 verses. In Revelation: 21 occurrences (5.2 per 100 verses). At 20:12-13 'judged according to their works' and 22:12 'according as his work shall be.'
Semantic categories: works of believers, divine works, works of the law, eschatological judgment
Key verses: Rev 2:2, Rev 2:9, Rev 2:13, Rev 2:19, Rev 2:26, Rev 3:1, Rev 3:8, Rev 3:15, Rev 20:12
Relevance: Ergon appears in every oida formula across all seven letters, making it the most consistent vocabulary item in the template. The 'I know thy works' formula connects the letters to the judgment by works at 20:12.
G4864 — synagoge¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4864-synagōgḗ.md
Occurrences: 57
Synagogue, assembly. 57 NT occurrences. In Revelation: 2 occurrences — both in the phrase 'synagogue of Satan' (synagoge tou Satana) at Rev 2:9 (Smyrna) and 3:9 (Philadelphia). This phrase is exclusive to these two letters (TM041). The synagoge/ekklesia distinction is maintained: Jewish assembly vs Christian church.
Semantic categories: Jewish assembly, hostile institution, gathered congregation
Key verses: Rev 2:9, Rev 3:9
Relevance: The exclusive synagoge tou Satana distribution in Smyrna and Philadelphia is one of the strongest verbal parallels supporting the chiastic B-B' pairing (VP046, 8 shared vocabulary items).
G2537 — kainos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2537-kainos.md
