Verses¶
Question¶
Dragon/Beast/False Prophet as systematic parody of Father/Son/Spirit in Revelation 12-13. Document every verbal parallel. Trace Greek vocabulary links. Does the parody operate at verse, scene, or macro-structural level?
Divine temporal formula: Is/Was/Is-to-Come¶
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
Context: Prologue salutation; divine name given in threefold temporal formula — present, past, future
Notes: ὁ ὤν (V-PAP-NSM present) + ὁ ἦν (V-IAI-3S past) + ὁ ἐρχόμενος (V-PNP-NSM coming). Order: IS/WAS/IS-TO-COME. Beast formula in Rev 17:8 inverts: WAS/IS-NOT/WILL-COME-UP.
Divine name with Pantokrator¶
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Context: God speaks directly; same threefold formula with addition of Pantokrator
Notes: Same IS/WAS/IS-TO-COME as 1:4, plus ὁ Παντοκράτωρ (G3841 N-NSM). The Almighty formula brackets divine incomparability that Rev 13:4 parodies.
Christ's resurrection self-declaration¶
[I am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Context: Christophany to John; Christ declares his death-to-life status
Notes: ὁ Ζῶν (V-PAP-NSM living) + ἐγενόμην νεκρός (became dead) + ζῶν εἰμι (am living). The authentic resurrection formula — contrasted with Rev 13:3 beast parody (ἐσφαγμένην V-RPP-ASF + ἐθεραπεύθη V-API-3S).
Heavenly throne-room: Trisagion and divine formula¶
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Context: Throne-room vision; four living creatures worship continuously
Notes: ORDER DIFFERS from 1:4 and 1:8 — WAS/IS/IS-TO-COME (ὁ ἦν V-IAI-3S + ὁ ὤν V-PAP-NSM + ὁ ἐρχόμενος V-PNP-NSM). Same three elements, different arrangement. Confirms the formula is not rigidly sequential but identifies the eternal one.
Slain Lamb standing — original sphazō perfect passive¶
And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Context: Throne-room vision; the Lamb is introduced as the scroll's worthy recipient
Notes: ἑστηκὸς (V-RAP-ASN perfect active — standing as a completed state) ὡς ἐσφαγμένον (V-RPP-ASN perfect passive — having been slain, neuter agreeing with arnion G721 neuter). The paradigm: death-state + living presence. Rev 13:3 mirrors with ἐσφαγμένην (V-RPP-ASF feminine, agreeing with kephalē G2776). Seven Spirits (πνεύματα G4151 N-NPN) = authentic spirit connection, contrasted with false-prophet's pneuma animation in 13:15.
Heavenly throne-room worship: new song and universal praise¶
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four [and] twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
Context: Throne-room vision; universal worship directed to the Lamb who was slain
Notes: The authentic proskuneo (G4352) scene — contrasted with Rev 13:4,8,12 beast worship. Worship is addressed to the genuinely slain Lamb (ἐσφαγμένον G4969 V-RPP-ASN). The power/riches/wisdom/strength sevenfold doxology in 5:12 parallels the triple dunamis/thronos/exousia transfer in 13:2.
Divine seal on the servants of God¶
And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
Context: Interlude before the seventh seal; protective sealing of 144,000
Notes: σφραγίς (G4973) — God's seal in foreheads (μέτωπα). Directly contrasted with χάραγμα (G5480) beast mark in foreheads (Rev 13:16, 14:9, 20:4). Both seal and mark are placed in the forehead — the parallel is deliberate and spatial.
Divine formula: Is/Was — without Is-to-Come¶
Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
Context: Seventh trumpet; 24 elders worship as God's kingdom is declared
Notes: KJV renders 'art to come' but the critical Greek text drops ὁ ἐρχόμενος — confirmed: ὁ ὤν (V-PAP-NSM) + ὁ ἦν (V-IAI-3S) only. The coming has arrived — the kingdom has been taken. This structural change marks narrative progress.
Dragon's diadems — seven crowns on seven heads¶
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Context: Heavenly sign — the great red dragon; war in heaven narrative
Notes: hepta diademata (G1238 N-APN) on kephalas (G2776 N-APF — heads, feminine plural). Dragon: 7 heads, 10 horns, 7 diadems on heads. Contrast: Beast (Rev 13:1) 7 heads, 10 horns, 10 diadems on horns. Christ (Rev 19:12) many diadems (unquantified). Diadem trajectory tracks the escalation of the parody and its ultimate resolution.
Dragon identified as ancient serpent, Devil, Satan¶
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Context: War in heaven; defeat of dragon and ejection to earth
Notes: ὁ καλούμενος (V-PPP-NSM participial naming-copula) identifies dragon as Diabolos and Satanas. The dragon = serpent of Gen 3 = the deceiver of the world. This grounds the entire parody in the original cosmic adversary. OT parallels: Isa 27:1 (great sea serpent/leviathan, 0.352), Gen 3:14 (serpent, 0.316).
Heavenly proclamation: accuser cast down, saints overcome¶
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Context: War in heaven aftermath; heavenly voice announces victory
Notes: 12:10 — ὁ κατήγωρ (accuser) = dragon's defining activity. Contrasts with Rev 13:7 where beast ἐδόθη (divine passive) authority to overcome (νικῆσαι G3528) saints. 12:11 — ἐνίκησαν (G3528 V-AAI-3P) through blood of Lamb + word of martyria (G3141). The saints' nikao uses same verb as beast's nikao in 13:7 and 11:7, but through opposite means: blood and testimony vs. conquest. NT parallels: Rev 17:14 (0.372 — Lamb and his overcome beast), 1 Pet 1:19 (0.370 — blood of lamb).
Dragon makes war with remnant¶
And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Context: End of woman-dragon narrative; dragon turns to persecute the remnant
Notes: The remnant is defined by martyria Iēsou (G3141) — the testimony of Jesus. This same phrase recurs in Rev 19:10 where it equals the spirit of prophecy. Contrasted with Rev 13:7 where the beast overcomes the saints.
Beast from the sea — ten diadems on horns¶
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
Context: New vision unit (kai eidon formula); first beast emerges from sea
Notes: deka diademata (G1238 N-APN) on keratōn (G2768 N-GPN — horns). Progression: Dragon 7 diadems on 7 heads → Beast 10 diadems on 10 horns → Christ many on head. Name of blasphemy (βλασφημία G988) on heads = inverse of God's name on servants' foreheads (7:3, 14:1, 22:4). kai eidon = vision-introduction formula marking new visionary unit parallel to Rev 4-5 throne room.
Dragon grants triple authority to the beast¶
And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
Context: Description of first beast; dragon as source of authority
Notes: ἔδωκεν (G1325 V-AAI-3S) — ACTIVE, dragon named subject. Triple transfer: δύναμιν (G1411 N-ASF power) + θρόνον (G2362 N-ASM throne) + ἐξουσίαν (G1849 N-ASF authority). This is the dragon's active conferral — parody of Rev 4-5 where Father's authority rests on the Lamb. OT parallels: Hosea 13:7 (leopard, 0.392), Dan 7:6 (composite beast, 0.365). Note: From v.5 onward, the same verb shifts to divine passive ἐδόθη — God's unnamed sovereignty bounds the dragon's active grant.
Slain head healed — sphazō parody¶
And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
Context: Description of first beast; pseudo-death-resurrection draws universal wonder
Notes: ἐσφαγμένην (G4969 V-RPP-ASF — perfect passive, feminine agreeing with kephalē G2776 head, feminine). The same verb as Rev 5:6 ἐσφαγμένον (V-RPP-ASN neuter, agreeing with arnion G721 neuter). Same stative aspect (bearing the state of having been slain), different gender — the gender shift follows the modified noun. ἐθεραπεύθη (V-API-3S — divine passive: the wound was healed by unnamed agent). ἐθαυμάσθη (V-API-3S — the world wondered). OT: No strong parallel — the beast pseudo-resurrection is structurally unique. NT parallels: Rev 13:12 (0.472 — false prophet perpetuates the parody), Rev 5:6 (0.346 — the Lamb parallel confirmed).
Dragon worshipped; incomparability formula inverted¶
And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Context: World worship of dragon and beast following the pseudo-resurrection
Notes: Τίς (G5101 I-NSM) ὅμοιος (G3664 A-NSM) τῷ θηρίῳ (G2342 N-DSN) — who is like the beast? This is the only NT incomparability formula applied to a creature. Parody of OT mi khamocha (Exod 15:11: 'Who is like unto thee, O LORD?'; Ps 35:10; Ps 89:8). ἔδωκεν (V-AAI-3S active) — dragon as active subject of prior authority grant (recap of 13:2). proskuneo (G4352) directed to dragon AND beast — both members receive worship simultaneously. The false prophet is the third who executes worship (13:12). NT parallels: Rev 13:2 (0.500), Rev 13:12 (0.436), Rev 12:7 (0.403 — war in heaven echo).
Beast given mouth and 42-month authority — divine passive¶
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months.
Context: Beast's operational mandate; double divine passive marks God's sovereignty
Notes: ἐδόθη (V-API-3S) ×2 — both the mouth and the 42-month authority are given by unnamed agent. The shift from active ἔδωκεν (dragon, vv. 2,4) to passive ἐδόθη (God's permission, vv. 5,7,14,15) is the grammar of divine sovereignty over evil. The 42 months = 3.5 years = time, times, half a time = bounded tribulation period.
Beast blasphemes God's name, tabernacle, heavenly dwellers¶
And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Context: Beast's activity within the 42 months; tripartite target of blasphemy
Notes: Blasphemy (G987 blasphemeō) directed at: (1) God, (2) his name (ὄνομα), (3) his tabernacle and heavenly dwellers. Inversion of the proskuneo throne-room (Rev 4-5) where the living creatures praise God's name. The dragon is called 'deceiver' (Rev 12:9) but the beast's role is specifically blasphemy.
Beast given authority over every tribe — divine passive conquest¶
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given unto him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Context: Beast's persecution mandate; saints temporarily overcome
Notes: ἐδόθη (V-API-3S) ×2 again — war-making on saints AND universal authority are both divine passives. νικῆσαι (G3528 V-AAN aorist infinitive) — beast's overcoming is a granted capability, not intrinsic power. Same verb used for saints overcoming in Rev 2:7,11,26; 3:5,12,21; 21:7. The irony: the beast overcomes saints temporarily only because God permits it. NT parallels with 12:11 (saints' nikao) make the inversion explicit.
All earth worships beast — Lamb's book of life¶
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Context: Universal beast worship distinguished from the sealed remnant
Notes: Those protected = names in the Lamb's book of life. 'Slain from the foundation of the world' — the Lamb's sphazō status is ante-cosmological, not a historical accident. The beast's pseudo-sphazō (13:3) is derivative and temporal. Rev 17:8 parallel: those whose names are not in the book of life 'wonder' at the beast.
Beast from the earth — lamblike appearance, dragon speech¶
And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
Context: Second beast (false prophet) introduced; appearance vs. speech dichotomy
Notes: ὅμοια (G3664 A-APN) ἀρνίῳ (G721 N-DSN — dative as object of comparison with homoios). This is the sole NT use of arnion (G721) for anyone other than Christ. The dative ἀρνίῳ is the comparison target, not a predicate. ἐλάλει (V-IAI-3S imperfect) ὡς δράκων (G1404 N-NSM) — spoke as a dragon (imperfect = continuous characteristic speech). The false prophet appears as a lamb (mimics Christ) but speaks as a dragon (serves the dragon). OT parallels: Dan 7:8 (another horn, 0.353). NT parallels: Rev 13:1 (0.507 — first beast parallel), Rev 5:6 (0.405 — Lamb parallel confirmed).
False prophet exercises all authority of first beast¶
And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
Context: False prophet's role described; third member of unholy trinity acts as executor
Notes: False prophet directs proskuneo (worship) to the first beast — just as the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ and directs attention to him (John 16:14 'He shall glorify me'). The Spirit-pointing role is parodied: Spirit points to Christ, false prophet points to beast. 'Whose deadly wound was healed' — the pseudo-resurrection parody is perpetuated by the false prophet's proclamation.
False prophet performs signs including fire from heaven¶
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Context: False prophet's miraculous signs; fire from heaven parodies Elijah/Pentecost
Notes: σημεῖα (G4592 signs) — ποιεῖ (V-PAI-3S) σημεῖα μεγάλα. Fire from heaven (πῦρ G4442 from οὐρανοῦ G3772): parodies 1 Kgs 18:38 (Elijah's fire) and Acts 2:3 (Pentecostal fire of the Spirit). ἐδόθη (V-API-3S divine passive) αὐτῷ ποιῆσαι = the signs are divinely permitted, not intrinsic power. Rev 13:14 ἐδόθη again for making signs before the beast. εἰκόνα (G1504 N-ASF) τῷ θηρίῳ (G2342 N-DSN — dative of dedication/purpose) = image made for/to the beast.
False prophet animates the image with pneuma¶
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
Context: False prophet as spirit-dispenser; animated image demands worship
Notes: ἐδόθη (V-API-3S divine passive) + δοῦναι (V-2AAN infinitive) + πνεῦμα (G4151 N-ASN) + τῇ εἰκόνι (G1504 N-DSF dative of recipient). The false prophet gives pneuma (spirit/breath) to the image. Parodies: (1) Gen 2:7 — God breathed life (pneuma) into Adam; (2) Rev 11:11 — Spirit of life (pneuma) enters the two witnesses; (3) Rev 5:6 — the seven Spirits (pneumata G4151) of the Lamb. The false prophet animates an image just as the Spirit animates believers. NT parallels: Rev 13:14 (0.433), Rev 14:9 (0.410 — worship + image + beast), Acts 7:43 (0.305 — Moloch image + worship).
Beast's mark — charagma as anti-seal¶
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Context: False prophet enforces economic exclusion for those without the mark
Notes: χάραγμα (G5480 N-ASN charagma — mark, incised stamp). Anti-structure to σφραγίς (G4973 seal). Both placed in foreheads: God's seal in foreheads (7:3), beast's mark in forehead/right hand (13:16). sphragis = ownership and protection; charagma = allegiance and commerce. Charagma has no LXX Hebrew source; sphragis connects to divine ownership throughout both testaments. Rev 14:1: Lamb's 144,000 have Father's name in their foreheads — the mark parody's counterpart.
Number of the beast: wisdom call and 666¶
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.
Context: Closing enigmatic formula; wisdom required to decode beast's identity
Notes: Ὧδε ἡ σοφία — 'Here is wisdom' = wisdom call formula, paralleled in Rev 17:9. ψηφισάτω (G5585 V-AAM-3S aorist imperative) τὸν ἀριθμὸν (G706 N-ASM) τοῦ θηρίου. ἀριθμὸς ἀνθρώπου = number of a man/humanity — the beast is described in human terms despite his hybrid nature. 666 = ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ. The numerological identification parodies Rev 14:1 where the 144,000 bear the Father's name.
Three unclean spirits from dragon, beast, and false prophet¶
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs [come] out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
Context: Sixth bowl; unholy trinity explicitly named as a triad for the first time
Notes: πνεύματα (G4151 N-APN) τρία ἀκάθαρτα — three unclean spirits from all three unholy trinity members: dragon (ὁ δράκων G1404) + beast (τὸ θηρίον G2342) + ψευδοπροφήτης (G5578 false prophet). This is the one verse where all three are named together, confirming the triad structure of chs. 12-13. The pneuma (G4151) irony: the same noun used for the Holy Spirit and the seven Spirits of God is used for the three unclean spirits.
Beast was/is not/will come — anti-divine temporal formula¶
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
Context: Angel interprets the beast; beast formula given as explicit anti-divine name
Notes: Beast formula: ἦν (V-IAI-3S WAS) + οὐκ ἔστιν (V-PAI-3S IS NOT) + μέλλει ἀναβαίνειν (V-PAI-3S + V-PAN ABOUT TO COME UP) + παρέσται (V-FDI-3S WILL BE PRESENT). Four elements vs. divine three. 'Is not' = present negation (the beast currently lacks existence/power). 'Come up from the abyss' = parody of resurrection from below. Divine formula: IS/WAS/IS-TO-COME; beast formula: WAS/IS NOT/WILL COME UP/PERDITION. NT parallels: Rev 13:8 (0.493 — book of life connection), Rev 17:11 (0.430 — the beast is the eighth).
Christ's many diadems — completion of the crown trajectory¶
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
Context: Christ's return; the Rider on the white horse identified
Notes: diademata (G1238 N-NPN) polla on kephalēn (G2776 N-ASF) — many crowns on head, unquantified. Dragon: 7 diadems; Beast: 10 diadems; Christ: many (πολλά). The quantitative escalation is resolved by transcendence of number. Christ's diadems are on his head (singular) not distributed across heads or horns.
Original image: man in the image of God¶
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Context: Creation; human beings bear the divine image
Notes: eikon (G1504) + homoiōsis (G3669) in LXX. The authentic divine image is given to humanity. Rev 13:14-15: the beast's eikon is a manufactured substitute. Col 1:15: Christ is the eikon tou theou (genitive — image of God). Rev 13:14: eikona tō thēriō (dative — image dedicated to the beast). The genitive/dative shift marks the difference between authentic origin and idol dedication.
God breathes life — pneuma parallel to Rev 13:15¶
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Context: Creation of Adam; divine breath animates a physical form
Notes: LXX: ἐνεφύσησεν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ πνοὴν ζωῆς. The divine breath (pneuma/pnoē) animates a formed image. Rev 13:15 parodies this: false prophet is given (ἐδόθη divine passive) δοῦναι πνεῦμα (G4151) to the image. Parallel: Creator → dust/clay → living soul; False prophet → idol/image → animated image. The creativity is delegated, derivative, and ultimately permitted only by God's sovereign passive.
Mi khamocha: who is like unto thee, O LORD?¶
Who [is] like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who [is] like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful [in] praises, doing wonders?
Context: Song of Moses after crossing the Red Sea; incomparability formula
Notes: The Hebrew mi khamocha formula — 'who is like you?' — asserts absolute divine incomparability. Rev 13:4 parodies: Τίς ὅμοιος τῷ θηρίῳ = 'who is like the beast?' The same rhetorical form applied to a creature. LXX: τίς ὅμοιός σοι / τίς ὅμοιός σοι. G3664 homoios is the lexical bridge between the OT incomparability formula and the beast's parodic claim.
Who is like thee, O LORD — mi khamocha series¶
All my bones shall say, LORD, who [is] like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?
Context: Davidic psalm; incomparability formula in context of deliverance
Notes: Second mi khamocha parallel. The homoios (G3664) library entry: 'tis homoios in an explicit rhetorical incomparability formula: Rev 13:4 contains the only NT occurrence.' This psalm confirms the OT pattern that Rev 13:4 inverts.
Divine incomparability in the heavenly council¶
For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? [who] among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?
Context: Covenant psalm; YHWH's incomparability among heavenly beings
Notes: The incomparability question in heavenly council context — 'who among the sons of the mighty can be likened?' The beast's followers answer this question for themselves in Rev 13:4 by declaring the beast incomparable. The question belongs to God alone.
Christ as eikon of the invisible God¶
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Context: Colossian hymn; Christ's status as the authentic divine image
Notes: εἰκὼν (G1504 N-NSF) τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου — genitive of origin/identity. Christ IS the image of God. Rev 13:14: beast's eikōn (G1504 N-ASF accusative) + dative of purpose/dedication. The eikon chain: Col 1:15 authentic (genitive of God) → Rev 13:14 substitute (dative to the beast) → Rev 13:15 animated substitute. The same noun (G1504) spans genuine divine self-expression and demonic imitation.
Satan as god of this age blinds to Christ's image¶
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Context: Paul's ministry; Satan's role in spiritual blindness described
Notes: ὁ θεὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου (the god of this age/world) = Satan. ἐτύφλωσεν (G5186 V-AAI-3S blinded, active). Christ = εἰκὼν (G1504 N-NSF) τοῦ Θεοῦ. Satan actively blinds people to the authentic eikon (Christ) while promoting a substitute eikon in Rev 13:14. The connection: the dragon/Satan who blinds nations to Christ's image in 2 Cor 4:4 is the same dragon who promotes the beast's image in Rev 13.
Christ as charakter of the Father's substance¶
Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Context: Opening of Hebrews; Christ's divine identity described
Notes: χαρακτήρ (G5481 N-NSM) τῆς ὑποστάσεως αὐτοῦ — exact representation of God's being/substance. G5481 charakter = the engraved impression that exactly reproduces the original. Compared to G5480 charagma (beast's mark): charakter is authentic divine imprint (Christ of Father); charagma is imposed allegiance mark (beast on humanity). The roots share the same etymology (charassō = to engrave) but the relational direction is opposite: charakter expresses origin from God; charagma imposes ownership for the beast.
Spirit glorifies Christ, speaks what he hears¶
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.
Context: Upper Room Discourse; Jesus describes the coming Spirit's role
Notes: The Holy Spirit: (1) does not speak of himself but of what he hears, (2) glorifies Christ, (3) guides to truth. False prophet parody: (1) speaks as a dragon (13:11), (2) glorifies the beast (13:12), (3) uses deceptive signs. The Spirit-pointing function is structurally parodied. The false prophet speaks on the dragon's behalf as the Spirit speaks on Christ's behalf.
Overcomer promise: tree of life (first letter)¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Context: Letter to Ephesus; promise to the overcomer
Notes: νικῶν (G3528 present participle — the one overcoming) receives the tree of life. Six more letters use the same verb for saints. Rev 13:7 uses the same verb (νικῆσαι) for the beast overcoming saints — same vocabulary, inverted direction. The saints' nikao is a granted status through death; the beast's nikao is a granted temporary conquest.
Overcomer promise: throne (final letter)¶
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Context: Letter to Laodicea; promise of shared throne
Notes: The highest overcomer promise — throne-sharing with Christ. The thronos (G2362) promise here contrasts directly with the thronos (G2362) the dragon grants the beast in Rev 13:2. Dragon gives beast a throne; Christ gives overcomers his throne. The same noun (thronos) marks the parody at the highest governance level.
144,000 with Father's name — anti-mark¶
And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
Context: Counter-vision to Rev 13; the sealed remnant with the Lamb on Zion
Notes: Father's name (ὄνομα) written in their foreheads — directly contrasted with the beast's mark (charagma) and name (ὄνομα θηρίου 13:17) in the forehead. God's mark = name; beast's mark = name OR number. The spatial parallel (foreheads) is exact; the content distinguishes authentic ownership from imposed allegiance.
Third angel's warning: beast worship brings wrath¶
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive [his] mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Context: Three angels' messages; consequence of beast allegiance
Notes: proskuneo + eikōn + charagma cluster at peak density — beast worship + image + mark = the full parody system described together. The consequence (wrath/torment) directly contrasts Rev 4:8-11 (worship + blessing + honor of God). The same proskuneo verb marks both scenes; the recipient determines eternal outcome.
Judgment given to throne-sitters; behead witnesses vindicated¶
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Context: Millennial vision; martyrs and resisters vindicated
Notes: κρίμα ἐδόθη (divine passive — judgment given) to the thrones. The martyrs who refused proskuneo of the beast + eikōn + charagma now reign with Christ (nikao fulfilled). This verse closes the beast-parody arc: those who refused the beast's mark now bear the Father's name (22:4); those who refused beast worship now reign.
Servants see God's face; name in foreheads¶
And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads.
Context: New Jerusalem; ultimate fulfillment of divine ownership
Notes: The final state: God's name (ὄνομα) in foreheads of his servants — completing the seal/mark anti-structure. Beast's mark in forehead (13:16, charagma) → God's name in forehead (22:4, ὄνομα). The location is identical; the content distinguishes imposed allegiance from granted identity. Rev 14:1 is the proleptic announcement; 22:4 is the realized fulfillment.
Believers sealed with the Holy Spirit¶
In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Context: Paul to Ephesians; Spirit as seal of salvation
Notes: ἐσφραγίσθητε (G4972 V-API-2P — you were sealed, divine passive) with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the seal of divine ownership. Contrasted with the false prophet who gives pneuma (G4151) to animate the beast's image in Rev 13:15. Authentic sealing is by the Spirit; the parody attempts to replicate animating spirit but produces only mechanical animation.
Lawless one's coming with lying signs¶
[Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
Context: Paul on the man of lawlessness; Satan-empowered signs
Notes: κατ' ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ (working of Satan) + δύναμιν (G1411) + σημεῖα (G4592) + τέρασιν ψεύδους. The same vocabulary (dunamis, sēmeia) used for the beast's empowerment in Rev 13:2 (dunamis from dragon) and 13:13 (sēmeia megala). Paul's 'lawless one' and John's beast share the same parody architecture: Satan-sourced power, signs, wonders, deception.
All authority given to Christ¶
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Context: Great Commission; post-resurrection authority claim of Christ
Notes: ἐδόθη μοι πᾶσα ἐξουσία (divine passive — all authority was given to me). The parallel: Christ receives ἐξουσία (G1849) via divine passive from the Father; the beast receives ἐξουσίαν μεγάλην (G1849) via active gift from the dragon (Rev 13:2). Both claim received authority, but the source, scope, and legitimacy differ. Matt 28:18 = all authority in heaven and earth; Rev 13:7 = authority over every tribe/tongue/nation (earth only).
Nebuchadnezzar's image — worship enforced by death threat¶
Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height [was] threescore cubits, [and] the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. [... and they] fell down [and] worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
Context: Babylonian court; enforced image worship with music and death penalty
Notes: Historical prototype for Rev 13:14-15: (1) ruler sets up an image, (2) all peoples required to worship it, (3) death penalty for refusal (Dan 3:6; Rev 13:15). Musical signal = coordinated coercion. The image-of-beast passage in Rev 13 recapitulates and escalates the Daniel 3 pattern on cosmic scale. Those who refuse in Dan 3 survive by divine intervention; those who refuse in Rev 13:15 are killed — yet their martyria overcomes (12:11).
Woman clothed with the sun — structural context for the dragon narrative¶
And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
Context: Heavenly sign; the woman represents the community of God about to bring forth the Messiah
Notes: The first of the two great signs (sēmeion) in heaven. Introduces the three-actor drama of Rev 12: woman, dragon, man child. The woman's twelve-star crown contrasts with the dragon's seven diadems (12:3) and the beast's ten diadems (13:1). The structural context establishes the cosmic conflict before the dragon and beast are introduced.
Man child caught up to God's throne; woman in wilderness¶
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days.
Context: The man child (Christ) ascends to God's throne; the woman (the remnant community) is protected
Notes: ἡρπάσθη (was caught up, divine passive) to God and his throne (θρόνον G2362). The throne theme: Christ is caught up to the divine throne (Rev 12:5); the dragon will give his throne to the beast (Rev 13:2); the overcomer will sit with Christ on his throne (Rev 3:21). 1260 days = 42 months = time/times/half-a-time — the same bounded period given to the beast in Rev 13:5.
War in heaven; dragon cast out — identified as old serpent, devil, Satan¶
And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Context: Cosmic war in heaven; dragon defeated and cast to earth before the beast narrative
Notes: The dragon's defeat precedes the beast narrative — the beast receives authority from an already-defeated cosmic enemy. ὁ καλούμενος (V-PPP-NSM) Διάβολος καὶ Σατανᾶς — the four-name identification (dragon, old serpent, devil, Satan) anchors the parody in cosmic adversarial history (Gen 3). OT parallels: Isa 27:1 leviathan (0.352). NT parallels: Rev 20:2 (0.593 — same four names at final binding).
Proclamation of salvation; dragon cast down, saints overcome¶
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Context: Heavenly proclamation following dragon's defeat; saints' victory formula revealed
Notes: 12:10: ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ Χριστοῦ αὐτοῦ — authority of his Christ proclaimed precisely when the dragon falls. The dragon's ejection enables Christ's authority proclamation. 12:11: ἐνίκησαν (G3528 — overcame) by blood of Lamb + word of martyria (G3141). The three-part victory formula (blood + testimony + self-sacrifice) is the anti-structure to the beast's granted nikao (13:7). 12:12: dragon has 'short time' (ὀλίγον καιρόν) = the 42 months of Rev 13:5 — bounded divine permission.
Dragon persecutes woman; serpent casts flood¶
And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man [child]. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
Context: Dragon persecutes the remnant community after failing to destroy the man child
Notes: ἐδόθησαν (divine passive — were given) two eagle wings. God's protection is coded in divine passives even here. The dragon/serpent casts flood from his mouth (στόμα G4750) — contrasted with the beast's στόμα speaking blasphemy (13:5-6) and the false prophet's στόμα from which unclean spirits proceed (16:13). Dragon's mouth = persecution flood; beast's mouth = blasphemy; false prophet's mouth = deceiving spirits.
Saints overcome by blood of Lamb and word of testimony¶
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Context: Heavenly proclamation; the saints' victory formula
Notes: ἐνίκησαν (G3528 V-AAI-3P) αὐτόν — they overcame him. Three-part formula: (1) blood of the Lamb, (2) word of their testimony (λόγος + martyria G3141), (3) love of life not unto death. This is the saints' nikao that the beast's nikao (13:7) temporarily interrupts but cannot permanently defeat. NT parallels: Rev 17:14 (0.372 — Lamb and called/chosen overcome beast), 1 Pet 1:19 (0.370 — blood of lamb).
Heavenly doxology: worthy to receive glory, honour, power¶
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Context: Throne-room vision; 24 elders cast crowns and declare God's worthiness
Notes: ἄξιος (worthy) + δόξαν + τιμήν + δύναμιν (G1411 N-ASF) — the creation doxology directed to the Creator. Rev 13:4 beast worship says 'Who is able to make war with him?' (δύναμιν implied). The same noun (dunamis G1411) appears in 4:11 (God's creation power), 13:2 (dragon grants beast his power), and 5:12 (Lamb receives power/riches/wisdom). The doxology vocabulary circulates through the parody structure.
Scroll sealed with seven seals; no one worthy to open it¶
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
Context: Throne-room; the sealed scroll creates the crisis of worthiness that only the Lamb resolves
Notes: σφραγίς (G4973) seals — seven of them. The crisis of worthiness (ἄξιος) is resolved only by the slain Lamb (5:5-6). The beast in Rev 13:4 demands a different worthiness question: 'Who is able (δύναται) to make war?' — replacing moral/redemptive worthiness with military capability. The Lamb's worthiness is established by his slaying (5:9); the beast's 'worthiness' is claimed through terror.
Lamb introduced as Lion of Judah, Root of David; slain but standing¶
And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Context: The Lamb is introduced as the only worthy one; his identity is paradoxical — Lion announced, Lamb seen
Notes: ἐνίκησεν (G3528 — he overcame/prevailed) to open the scroll. This is the foundational Lamb nikao from which all subsequent overcomer promises derive. ἑστηκὸς (V-RAP-ASN perfect — standing as completed state) ὡς ἐσφαγμένον (V-RPP-ASN perfect passive — having been slain). The double perfect: both the standing and the slaying are stative — permanent conditions, not past events only. Rev 13:11: false prophet has two horns homoios (like) arnion — the comparison noun is from this exact introduction.
Sevenfold doxology to the Lamb and to the one on the throne¶
Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
Context: Universal heavenly doxology; seven attributes given to the Lamb
Notes: δύναμιν (G1411) + πλοῦτον + σοφίαν + ἰσχύν + τιμήν + δόξαν + εὐλογίαν — sevenfold doxology to the Lamb. Compare Rev 13:2: dragon gives beast δύναμιν + θρόνον + ἐξουσίαν — a threefold (not sevenfold) transfer of derived (not inherent) attributes. The Lamb receives seven authentic attributes by universal acclamation; the beast receives three derived attributes from the defeated dragon.
Great multitude before throne and Lamb in white robes¶
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
Context: Interlude between sixth and seventh seals; redeemed multitude in heavenly worship
Notes: proskuneo context — universal worship (πᾶσα φυλή/γλώσσα/λαός) directed to God on throne and the Lamb. Directly contrasted with Rev 13:7-8 where the beast is given authority over 'every kindred, and tongue, and nation' and all earth worships him. The same universal scope vocabulary (nations/kindreds/tongues/peoples) marks both scenes; the direction of worship is inverted.
Ear formula and patience of the saints¶
If any man have an ear, let him hear. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
Context: Between the beast's war on saints (13:7-8) and the false prophet introduction (13:11); structural pivot
Notes: Εἴ τις ἔχει οὖς ἀκουσάτω — the same ear formula used in the seven letters (2:7, 2:11, etc.) appears here as the structural marker separating the beast's conquest from the false prophet section. ὑπομονή (patience/endurance) and πίστις (faith) of the saints — the two virtues that sustain the saints under the beast's 42-month mandate. This mirrors the letter-pattern: overcomer promised + ear formula. Here the ear formula appears AFTER the persecution, not the promise.
Scarlet beast with seven heads and ten horns — beast as throne¶
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Context: Vision of the great harlot riding the scarlet beast; angel interprets both
Notes: The scarlet beast reuses the full description of Rev 13:1 (seven heads, ten horns, blasphemy names) but now in a different role — as throne for the harlot. The beast's θρόνον (received from dragon, 13:2) becomes itself a throne for another. The blasphemy names now fill the beast rather than being written on one head. Rev 17:8 will provide the beast's temporal formula. NT parallels to Rev 5:6: Rev 17:3 scores 0.518 — highest NT parallel for the Lamb scene (horn/seven imagery connecting the two).
Beast and false prophet cast into lake of fire¶
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Context: Final judgment; the first two members of the unholy trinity are destroyed together
Notes: Beast + false prophet — the two of Rev 13 — are taken together. The false prophet is identified by: (1) miracles before the beast, (2) deception of mark-receivers, (3) deception of image-worshippers. All three identifying marks reference Rev 13:13-15. ἐβλήθησαν ζῶντες (were cast alive — note: they are 'alive' when cast in, parodying the Lamb who was dead and is alive). Rev 20:10 will complete the unholy trinity's fate by adding the dragon/devil.
Devil joins beast and false prophet in lake of fire¶
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Context: After Satan's final release and defeat; dragon joins the other two in final destruction
Notes: The dragon/devil is cast into the lake of fire where ὁ θηρίον and ὁ ψευδοπροφήτης already are — completing the unholy trinity's shared fate. 'Tormented day and night for ever and ever' mirrors the torment of beast-worshippers in Rev 14:11 ('they have no rest day nor night'). The unholy trinity shares its worshippers' eternal consequence. This scene closes the parody arc: the imitation trinity is destroyed together while the authentic Trinity reigns.
Father gives all judgment to Son; authority to execute judgment¶
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: [...] And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Context: Jesus' discourse on his authority; Johannine theology of delegated divine authority
Notes: ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ἐξουσία (divine passive — authority given to him, v.27). The pattern: Father → Son via delegated authority (ἐξουσία G1849). Compare Rev 13:2: dragon → beast via ἔδωκεν (active). In John 5, the authority transfers from the greater to the lesser via divine passive; in Rev 13:2, it transfers from the dragon (via active verb) but is still bounded by the divine passives. The Son's authority is genuine (all judgment); the beast's authority is partial (every tribe, earth only, 42 months).
Father gives Son power over all flesh¶
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
Context: High Priestly Prayer; Christ's universal authority over humanity
Notes: ἔδωκας αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν πάσης σαρκός — the Father's grant of universal authority over all flesh. Compare Rev 13:7: beast given ἐξουσία ἐπὶ πᾶσαν φυλήν (over every tribe). Both claim universal authority. Christ's use of that authority: to give eternal life. Beast's use: to wage war and demand worship. The scope overlaps; the purpose is diametrically opposed.
Grieve not the Holy Spirit by whom ye are sealed¶
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Context: Paul to Ephesians; the Spirit as the seal of redemption
Notes: ἐσφραγίσθητε (V-API-2P Aor Pass — you were sealed, divine passive) ἐν ᾧ (by whom = the Spirit). The Spirit is the sealing agent of redemption. Contrasted with Rev 13:16: false prophet causes all to receive χάραγμα (charagma — beast's mark). Authentic sealing: by the Spirit to the day of redemption; false marking: by the false prophet to the beast. The agent (Spirit vs. false prophet) and the purpose (redemption vs. commerce/allegiance) are the inversions.
Pergamos — where Satan's throne is¶
I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan's seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
Context: Letter to Pergamos; the church endures where Satan's throne is located
Notes: ὁ θρόνος τοῦ Σατανᾶ — Satan's throne at Pergamos. The dragon possesses a throne (θρόνος G2362) which he gives to the beast (Rev 13:2). The letter to Pergamos identifies an earthly locus of that throne. The church at Pergamos holds fast Christ's name (ὄνομα) even where Satan's throne is — inverting the beast's pattern where his name/mark replaces God's name on the beast-worshippers.
Fifth bowl poured on beast's throne — kingdom darkened¶
And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
Context: Fifth bowl judgment; directed specifically at the beast's throne
Notes: τὸν θρόνον τοῦ θηρίου (G2362 — the throne of the beast) targeted by divine judgment. The beast's received throne (from dragon, 13:2) is now the target of the bowl. The darkening (σκότος) contrasts with Rev 4:5's lightnings and thunders from God's throne (authentic throne as source of light and power). The beast's throne produces only darkness when judged.
Locust army cannot harm those with God's seal in forehead¶
And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
Context: Fifth trumpet; locust-scorpions exempted from harming the sealed
Notes: σφραγίς (G4973) of God on μέτωπα (G3359 — foreheads). The divine seal in foreheads is protective — the sealed are exempt from the locust judgment. This is the functional distinction between the divine seal and the beast's mark: God's seal protects; the beast's mark (in the same location, 13:16) grants commercial access but leads to judgment (14:9-11). The forehead (metopon G3359) is the consistent spatial marker for both divine ownership and beast allegiance.
Four beasts from the sea — OT source for Rev 13 chimeric beast¶
And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first [was] like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and [it had] three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it [was] diverse from all the beasts that [were] before it; and it had ten horns.
Context: Daniel's four-beast vision; four successive world empires depicted as composite creatures
Notes: Rev 13:2's chimeric beast (leopard + bear + lion) is the four Danielic beasts combined into one. Daniel's beasts are sequential (four kingdoms); Rev 13's beast synthesizes all their characteristics into one end-time entity. 'Dominion was given to it' (7:6) = divine passive — the same construction that governs the beast's authority in Rev 13:5,7. The ten horns of Daniel's fourth beast (7:7) reappear on the Rev 13 beast (13:1). OT genesis of the sea-beast imagery confirmed.
Elijah — fire from the LORD falls on Mount Carmel¶
Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that [was] in the trench.
Context: Contest on Mount Carmel; YHWH's fire authenticates the true prophet against 450 Baal prophets
Notes: The authentic sign: fire falling from heaven from YHWH. Rev 13:13 parodies: the false prophet performs σημεῖα and 'maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.' Same description, different source. Elijah's fire vindicates the true prophet (1 Kgs 18:36-40); the false prophet's fire deceives. Acts 2:3 provides a NT parallel: the Pentecostal fire from heaven. Both are parodied by Rev 13:13.
Tav mark on foreheads of mourners — OT forehead-mark prototype¶
And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.
Context: Ezekiel's vision of Jerusalem's judgment; the faithful marked for protection before slaughter begins
Notes: תָּו (tav — the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, literally meaning 'mark') placed on foreheads (מְצָח — metsach) of the faithful mourners as protective identification before judgment. This is the earliest biblical forehead-mark for divine protection — the structural prototype for both Rev 7:3 (seal of God on foreheads) and 22:4 (name in foreheads). The beast's charagma in foreheads (Rev 13:16) inverts the Ezekiel tav: both use the forehead as the site of identification, but one marks God's faithful for protection while the other marks beast-allegiance.
