Verses¶
Question¶
How does Revelation construct its already/not-yet temporal framework through verb tense, vocabulary, and structural markers — and what does this reveal about the book's eschatological logic?
En Tachei — The Book's Opening Temporal Claim¶
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified [it] by his angel unto his servant John:
Context: Prologue. The entire book's mandate — 'things which must shortly come to pass' — uses en tachei (G5034, dative of tachos). Sets temporal expectation for everything that follows.
Notes: τάχει [N-DSN] G5034 dative of tachos. BDAG glosses en tachei as 'soon, in a short time' at this verse. Debate: does it mean temporal imminence (Mounce, BDAG, Farrar) or manner of execution — swiftness (Walvoord, Thomas)? The identical phrase recurs at Rev 22:6, forming a prologue-epilogue frame. LXX Dan 2:28 uses 'ha dei genesthai' (what must come to pass) — Rev 1:1 echoes this verbatim, linking Revelation's mandate to Daniel's.
Kairos Engus — First Inclusio Marker¶
Blessed [is] he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time [is] at hand.
Context: First beatitude of Revelation. 'The time is at hand' = ho kairos engus. Opens the book's temporal inclusio bracket.
Notes: καιρὸς [N-NSM] G2540 + ἐγγύς [ADV] G1451. This exact phrase 'ho kairos engus' recurs at Rev 22:10, forming an inclusio that brackets the entire book. Engus from G1451 word study: 30 NT occurrences; Rev has 2 (1:3, 22:10) — both in this inclusio. Hebrew source H7138 (PMI 7.99). G1448 eggizō is the verbal cognate (process vs. state distinction).
Three-Element Divine Formula — Full Form¶
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
Context: Epistolary prescript. The three-element divine self-description — ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos — appears here in its full form.
Notes: ὢν [V-PAP-NSM] G1510 Pres Act Ptcp — 'which is' (present). ἦν [V-IAI-3S] G1510 Impf Act Ind — 'which was' (past). ἐρχόμενος [V-PNP-NSM] G2064 Pres M/P Ptcp — 'which is to come' (future-oriented). Three-element formula: present + past + coming. Recurs at 1:8 and 4:8 in full form. Reduced to two elements at 11:17 and 16:5 (dropping ho erchomenos) — the reduction signals that 'the coming' has been realized.
Three-Element Divine Formula with Pantokrator¶
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Context: Divine self-declaration. Full three-element formula + Pantokrator (Almighty/all-sovereign).
Notes: Same three-element formula as 1:4. Παντοκράτωρ [N-NSM] G3841 added. This is the full form — all three elements present. Compare to reduced form at 11:17 and 16:5 where ho erchomenos is absent.
Hypomonē as Covenant Condition — Philadelphia¶
Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Context: Letter to Philadelphia. The church's past hypomonē (keeping 'my patience') conditions a future divine keeping during the hour of testing.
Notes: G5281 hypomonē = 'my patience/endurance.' The church has matched Christ's own hypomonē (see Rev 1:9 where John is co-partaker). Note tense structure: kept (aorist) → I will keep (future). Endurance in the present tribulation connects to future preservation.
Nikao Aorist/Present Contrast — Christ's Victory Grounds Believer's Ongoing Overcoming¶
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Context: Letter to Laodicea, seventh and climactic overcomer promise. Christ's completed victory grounds the promise to ongoing overcomers.
Notes: νικῶν [V-PAP-NSM] G3528 Pres Act Ptcp — ongoing 'he that overcometh.' ἐνίκησα [V-AAI-1S] G3528 Aor Act Ind 1S — Christ's completed 'I overcame.' The tense contrast is structural: Christ's aorist (past completed) grounds the believer's present participle (ongoing process). This is TM195 nikao taxonomy: Christ's self-originated aorist vs. believer's present participle.
Three-Element Divine Formula in Throne Room¶
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Context: Throne room vision (Rev 4). The living creatures declare the divine formula without ceasing.
Notes: Note word order here: ὁ ἦν (was) + ὁ ὢν (is) + ὁ ἐρχόμενος (is to come) — same three elements but past listed first. All three elements present. The incessant praise = the formula describes God's eternal nature across all time.
Sealed Scroll and the Lion Who Has Prevailed — Nikao Aorist¶
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. [2-4 — no one worthy]... And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
Context: Throne room. The sealed scroll of Rev 5:1 echoes Dan 12:4. The Lion has 'prevailed' (aorist) — completed act at the cross. The unveiling of a sealed scroll mirrors Daniel's sealed vision now opened.
Notes: ἐνίκησεν [V-AAI-3S] G3528 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'hath prevailed' at 5:5. Cross-event aorist — Christ's victory already accomplished. The sealed scroll (sphragís) at Rev 5:1 = the sealed revelation given to Daniel (Dan 12:4 satam + chatham). Christ's opening of the seals = the epistemological unsealing. See revs2-10 for the unsealing framework.
New Song — Proleptic Aorist Redemption and Future Reign¶
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Context: Throne room worship (Rev 5). The four living creatures and 24 elders sing. ēgorasas (redeemed) and epoiēsas (made) are aorists referring to completed cross-work. basileusousin (shall reign) is future.
Notes: ἠγόρασας [V-AAI-2S] G59 Aor Act Ind 2S — 'hast redeemed' (completed act). ἐποίησας [V-AAI-2S] G4160 Aor Act Ind 2S — 'hast made' (completed act). βασιλεύσουσιν [V-FAI-3P] G936 Fut Act Ind 3P — 'shall reign' (future). Tense pattern: past acts of redemption ground a future reign. The 'already' of the cross funds the 'not yet' of the reign.
Mighty Angel, Open Book, and Chronos No Longer¶
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow [was] upon his head, and his face [was] as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and [his] left [foot] on the earth, [3] And cried with a loud voice, as [when] a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. [4] And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not. [5] And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, [6] And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: [7] But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
Context: Interlude between trumpets 6 and 7. The little book is open (contrast sealed scroll of Rev 5). The oath declares chronos ouketi estai. Rev 10:4 seals the seven thunders — the ONLY thing sealed in Revelation (per G4972 word study).
Notes: χρόνος [N-NSM] G5550 + οὐκέτι [ADV-N G3765] + ἔσται [V-FDI-3S] G1510 Fut Mid Ind 3S. 'Time shall be no longer' — chronos = measured elapsed duration (not kairos = appointed season). The open book contrasts with the sealed scroll of Dan 12:4 and Rev 5:1. The mystery to be 'finished' (G5055 teleō) at the seventh trumpet links to Rev 11:15 kingdom announcement. The oath structure (lifting hand to heaven) echoes Dan 12:7.
Seventh Trumpet — Kingdom Announcement as Proleptic Aorist¶
The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly. And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
Context: Third woe / seventh trumpet. The kingdom announcement in v.15 uses aorist egeneto ('are become') while the future reign is expressed as basileusei (future). Tachu in v.14 marks the rapid sequence.
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 at v.14 — 'quickly' (manner-of-action or temporal imminence). ἐγένοντο [V-2ADI-3P] Aor Mid Ind 3P — the 'voices' became/arose. Ἐγένετο [V-2ADI-3S] G1096 Aor Mid Ind 3S — 'are become' (kingdoms). This is the proleptic aorist: the kingdoms' transfer is announced as accomplished fact in heaven before its earthly realization. βασιλεύσει [V-FAI-3S] G936 Fut Act Ind 3S — 'he shall reign' (future). OT background: Dan 2:44, 7:18,27. NT parallel: Rev 12:10 (ēlthen hē basileia) — same announcement.
Two-Element Divine Formula — Ho Erchomenos Absent¶
Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
Context: 24 elders' response to kingdom announcement. KJV translates with three elements but the Greek has ONLY TWO — the coming element (ho erchomenos) is absent.
Notes: ὁ ὢν [V-PAP-NSM] + ὁ ἦν [V-IAI-3S] — TWO-ELEMENT formula. ho erchomenos is ABSENT. The KJV 'art to come' is a translation addition not in the Greek. Significance: by dropping ho erchomenos, the formula signals that the 'coming' has been realized in the context of this proclamation. εἴληφας [V-2RAI-2S] G2983 Perf Act Ind 2S lambanō — 'hast taken' (perfect = completed with ongoing result). ἐβασίλευσας [V-AAI-2S] G936 Aor Act Ind 2S — 'hast reigned' (ingressive aorist or prophetic aorist). Two-element formula also at 16:5.
Ēlthen Hē Orgē — Proleptic Arrival of Wrath¶
And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
Context: Part of the 24 elders' extended declaration. Judgment announced as having arrived.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S erchomai — 'is come' (proleptic aorist). καιρὸς [N-NSM] G2540 — 'the time' of the dead. Pattern: ēlthen + subject = 'X has come' formula. Appears as VP176-180 in structural DB from revs2-20.
War in Heaven — Dragon Cast Out (Ballo Arc Phase 1)¶
And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Context: Rev 12 cosmic flashback/vision. The war in heaven and the dragon's expulsion. Aorist passives mark completed action; present participle marks continuing activity.
Notes: ἐγένετο [V-2ADI-3S] G1096 — war 'took place' (aorist). ἐπολέμησεν [V-AAI-3S] G4170 — dragon 'fought' (aorist). ἐβλήθη [V-API-3S] G906 βάλλω — 'was cast out' (aorist passive, divine passive ×2). ἐβλήθησαν [V-API-3P] — angels 'were cast out' (aorist passive plural). πλανῶν [V-PAP-NSM] G4105 — 'deceiveth' (PRESENT participle — ongoing deceptive activity continues after casting). This is the ALREADY: the casting is completed. The NOT YET: the deception continues (12:13-17). Ballo Arc (TM196): eblēthē at 12:9 → ebalen at 20:3 → eblēthē at 20:10.
Heaven's Proclamation — Arti Egeneto and Dragon's Continuing Wrath¶
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Context: Heavenly proclamation following the expulsion (Rev 12:9). The heaven perspective (v.10-11) and the earth-danger perspective (v.12) show the dual already/not-yet reality.
Notes: Ἄρτι [ADV] G737 — 'Now' (present-moment marker). ἐγένετο [V-2ADI-3S] G1096 — 'is come' salvation (proleptic/prophetic aorist). ἐβλήθη [V-API-3S] G906 — accuser 'is cast down' (aorist passive). κατηγορῶν [V-PAP-NSM] G2723 — 'which accused' (PRESENT participle — ongoing activity now terminated). v.12: κατέβη [V-2AAI-3S] G2597 — devil 'is come down' (aorist). ἔχων [V-PAP-NSM] G2192 — 'having' great wrath (present participle). εἰδὼς [V-RAP-NSM] G1492 — 'knoweth' (PERFECT participle — knowing with certainty). ἔχει [V-PAI-3S] G2192 — 'hath' but a short time (present indicative). ὀλίγον καιρὸν — 'oligon kairon' = 'a short time/season' (kairos G2540, not chronos). The dual perspective: heaven sees accomplished salvation (v.10); earth experiences the dragon's intensified rage (v.12).
Dragon Persecutes Woman — Not-Yet Dimension Continues¶
And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man [child]. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Context: Earth-level aftermath of the dragon's expulsion. The 3.5-year wilderness period. Dragon unable to reach the woman attacks the remnant instead.
Notes: The dragon's casting (12:9) is already accomplished, yet he persecutes, wars, rages — the NOT YET continues. The time period 'a time, and times, and half a time' = 3.5 years (42 months = 1,260 days = time times half-time). The remnant 'keep the commandments of God' — ἐντολὰς links to hypomonē formula at 14:12. Note: 'testimony of Jesus Christ' = martyria.
Beast's Permitted Conquest — Divine Passive Backbone¶
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Context: Beast from the sea. His authority comes through edothē (divine passive) — not self-originated. The 42-month time limit is built into the permission itself.
Notes: ἐδόθη [V-API-3S] G1325 Aor Pass Ind 3S — divine passive ×2 at 13:5, ×2 at 13:7. The beast's authority is DERIVATIVE: permitted by divine sovereign decree. νικῆσαι [V-AAN] G3528 Aor Act Inf — 'to overcome' (infinitive following edothē — the overcoming is within the permission, not self-originated). Contrast with Christ's self-originated enikesan at 5:5. The 42 months (μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο) = the 3.5-year period. Beast's conquest is real but bounded and permitted — this is the NOT YET that operates under divine sovereignty.
Hypomonē Alongside Beast's Conquest¶
He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
Context: Comment at the end of beast description (13:10). The call to patience immediately follows the beast's permission to overcome saints.
Notes: ὑπομονὴ [N-NSF] G5281 — 'patience' (hypomonē). Positioned immediately after the beast's edothē authority — the saints' response to permitted persecution is patient endurance. 'Here is the patience' (ὧδέ ἐστιν ἡ ὑπομονή) — identical structural formula as 14:12. The lex talionis logic (captivity/sword reciprocity) grounds the call — justice will come.
Three Angels: Eternal Gospel, Hour of Judgment, Fallen Babylon¶
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Context: Three angels of Rev 14 (first angel 14:6-7, second angel 14:8). Hour of judgment 'is come' (aorist). Babylon 'is fallen, is fallen' — the proleptic doublet before Babylon's actual fall in Rev 17-18.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (hōra tēs kriseōs). Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν [V-2AAI-3S] G4098 ×2 — proleptic aorist doublet. The doublet mirrors the Hebrew prophetic perfect doublet at Isa 21:9 (naphal naphal Babylon). The Isa 21:9 doublet is the OT source that Rev 14:8 and 18:2 deliberately echo (confirmed by tense-aorist-prophetic.md).
First Angel — Eternal Gospel, Hour of Judgment Come¶
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
Context: First of three angels in Rev 14. The eternal gospel proclamation accompanied by the judgment hour announcement — 'is come' uses the proleptic aorist ēlthen.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (hōra tēs kriseōs = 'the hour of his judgment'). The proleptic aorist declares the judgment hour as arrived before the bowls sequence. The Creator-worship command (heaven/earth/sea/fountains) echoes the Sabbath formula of the fourth commandment.
Ēlthen Hē Hōra — Judgment Hour Arrived (Proleptic Aorist)¶
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
Context: First angel's proclamation (Rev 14:7). The hour of judgment 'is come' — proleptic aorist.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (hōra = G5610). This is the hōra + ēlthen formula: hōra tēs kriseōs (hour of judgment) declared arrived using the proleptic aorist. Part of the VP176-180 structural marker series.
Epesen Epesen — Proleptic Aorist Doublet, Babylon Fallen¶
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Context: Second angel of Rev 14. The first of two Babylon-fall doublet announcements (second at 18:2). Babylon's fall is announced before it is narrated in Rev 17-18.
Notes: Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν [V-2AAI-3S] G4098 ×2 — proleptic aorist doublet. The doublet mirrors the Hebrew prophetic perfect doublet at Isa 21:9 (naphal naphal Babylon). Note: Isa 21:9 did NOT score high on cross-testament hybrid tool for Rev 14:8 — manual intertextual link required. The Isa 21:9 doublet is the OT source that Rev 14:8 and 18:2 deliberately echo (confirmed by tense-aorist-prophetic.md). AN085 epesen doublet pattern.
Hypomonē Formula — Eschatological Structural Marker¶
Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Context: Following the second and third angels (Babylon's fall, mark-of-beast doom). Hypomonē placed between judgment announcements and harvest imagery.
Notes: ὑπομονὴ [N-NSF] G5281 — hypomonē. τηροῦντες [V-PAP-NPM] G5083 — 'keep' (present participle, ongoing). ἐντολάς G1785 (commandments) + πίστιν G4102 (faith). The hypomonē formula ωδε ἐστιν ἡ ὑπομονή appears at 13:10 and 14:12 — two structural calls to endurance within the beast section. G5281 word study: 7 Revelation occurrences (highest density per 100 verses in NT at 1.7). Hebrew source H4723 miqveh (hope/expectation vocabulary, PMI 9.98).
Ēlthen Hē Hōra — Harvest Hour Arrived¶
And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
Context: Harvest scene (Rev 14:14-20). The harvest angel declares the hour to reap 'has come' — proleptic aorist of imminence.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (hōra therisai = hour to reap). Part of the hōra + ēlthen proleptic formula pattern (VP176-180 series).
Two-Element Formula at Bowl Judgments¶
And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
Context: Third bowl judgment. Angel of waters declares God's righteousness. KJV adds 'shalt be' but the Greek has only two elements.
Notes: ὁ ὢν [V-PAP-NSM] + ὁ ἦν [V-IAI-3S] — TWO-ELEMENT formula only. ho erchomenos ABSENT (KJV 'shalt be' = translation addition). ἔκρινας [V-AAI-2S] G2919 Aor Act Ind 2S — 'hast judged' (completed). The two-element formula here (as at 11:17) signals the 'coming' element is now realized in the bowl judgment context.
Gegonen Singular Perfect — Bowl 7 Completion¶
And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
Context: Seventh bowl — climax of judgment series. 'It is done' = Gegonen, perfect singular.
Notes: Γέγονεν [V-2RAI-3S] G1096 Perf Act Ind Sg 3S ginomai — 'It is done' (perfect singular). Compare Γέγοναν [V-2RAI-3P] at 21:6 (perfect PLURAL — all things accomplished in new creation). The singular perfect at 16:17 marks the completion of the judgment sequence; the plural perfect at 21:6 marks the completion of all creation renewal. This is the ginomai completion arc (TM197/SP096).
Beast Formula — Dark Parody of Divine Formula¶
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
Context: Angel's explanation to John (Rev 17). The beast's temporal formula parodies the divine 'who is and was and is to come.'
Notes: Beast formula: ἦν [V-IAI-3S] (was) + οὐκ ἔστιν [V-PAI-3S] (is not) + παρέσται [V-FDI-3S] G3918 (shall be present). This is the dark parody of the divine formula: 'who is and was and is to come.' The beast 'was' (past existence), 'is not' (present absence), 'shall ascend' (future return) — but leads to perdition (ἀπώλεια). γέγραπται [V-RPI-3S] G1125 Perf Pass Ind — 'was not written' (perfect = permanent exclusion from book of life). From revs2-19 (TM from unholy trinity study).
Nikao Future — Lamb's Eschatological Victory¶
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.
Context: Angel's interpretation of the beast's final coalition. The Lamb's victory is expressed in future tense.
Notes: νικήσει [V-FAI-3S] G3528 Fut Act Ind 3S — 'shall overcome' (future). This is the eschatological nikao (TM195 taxonomy) — future victory contrasted with the already-completed enikesan at 5:5 and 3:21. πολεμήσουσιν [V-FAI-3P] G4170 Fut Act Ind 3P — 'shall make war' (future). The Lamb's title 'Lord of lords, King of kings' = grounds for the certainty of future victory.
Second Babylon Doublet — Proleptic Aorist Repeated¶
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Context: Second angel's Babylon announcement (Rev 18) — repeats the doublet of Rev 14:8, now with added detail of Babylon's desolate state.
Notes: Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν [V-2AAI-3S] G4098 ×2 — doublet proleptic aorist repeated. Second announcement of the same proleptic fall. The doublet at 14:8 and 18:2 together form the AN085 epesen doublet pattern. Both mirror Isa 21:9's naphal naphal.
Mia Hora — Judgment's Swift Arrival¶
Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Context: Kings of earth lamenting Babylon's fall. The 'one hour' intensifies the sudden arrival.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (hē krisis = 'thy judgment'). Part of the ēlthen + hōra proleptic formula series. 'Mia hora' = 'in one hour' — the arrival is both sudden and complete.
Ebasileusen and Ēlthen — Kingdom Reigneth and Marriage Come¶
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
Context: Great multitude's hallelujah (Rev 19). Kingdom reign announced; marriage of the Lamb declared as 'come.'
Notes: ἐβασίλευσεν [V-AAI-3S] G936 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'reigneth' (KJV present; Greek is aorist — ingressive or prophetic aorist). ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (marriage of the Lamb). The marriage = wedding of heaven and earth. Both aorists in a hymnic context where the eschatological reality is celebrated as accomplished.
Dragon Bound — Ballo Arc Phase 2¶
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Context: Millennial binding. The dragon who was cast from heaven (12:9) is now cast into the abyss. The sealing echoes Dan 12:4 but with temporal limit.
Notes: ἔβαλεν [V-2AAI-3S] G906 Aor Act Ind 3S βάλλω — 'cast him' (into abyss). ἐσφράγισεν [V-AAI-3S] G4972 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'set a seal upon him.' χρόνον [N-ASM] G5550 — 'a little season/time' (chronos — measured duration). Ballo Arc TM196: eblēthē (12:9, heaven→earth) → ἔβαλεν (20:3, earth→pit) → eblēthē (20:10, pit→lake of fire). The sealing here is temporal and remedial; contrast Rev 22:10's prohibition on sealing the prophecy.
Dragon Cast into Lake of Fire — Ballo Arc Phase 3¶
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Context: Final disposal of the dragon. Completes the three-stage ballo arc from Rev 12:9 → 20:3 → 20:10.
Notes: πλανῶν [V-PAP-NSM] G4105 — 'that deceived' (PRESENT participle — descriptive of ongoing role). ἐβλήθη [V-API-3S] G906 Aor Pass Ind 3S βάλλω — 'was cast' (aorist passive = divine passive, G906 same root as 12:9). Final stage of ballo arc: same verb (G906) as Rev 12:9, now to lake of fire. The present participle 'deceiving' modifies the dragon even at his final disposal — his nature defined by ongoing deception until the very end.
Gegonan Plural Perfect — All Things Done, New Creation Complete¶
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Context: New Jerusalem vision. God declares 'It is done' using the perfect PLURAL of ginomai — all things accomplished.
Notes: Γέγοναν [V-2RAI-3P] G1096 Perf Act Ind Pl 3P ginomai — 'It is done' (PERFECT PLURAL). Contrast with Γέγονεν (singular perfect, 16:17). The plural signals comprehensive completion — not just the judgment sequence but all things. The Alpha-Omega self-identification brackets the completion with divine identity.
Nikao Present Participle — Ongoing Overcoming Receives Future Inheritance¶
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
Context: Overcomer promise in the new creation context. The ongoing overcomer (present participle) inherits the completed things.
Notes: ὁ νικῶν [V-PAP-NSM] G3528 Pres Act Ptcp — 'he that overcometh' (present participle = ongoing overcoming). κληρονομήσει [V-FAI-3S] G2816 Fut Act Ind 3S — 'shall inherit' (future). ἔσομαι [V-FDI-1S] G1510 Fut Mid Ind 1S — 'I will be' (future). ἔσται [V-FDI-3S] G1510 Fut Mid Ind 3S — 'shall be' (future). Pattern: ongoing present participle overcoming → future inheritance. This completes TM195 nikao taxonomy: Christ's aorist (3:21, 5:5) + believer's present participle (3:21, 21:7) + beast's infinitive (13:7) + eschatological future (17:14).
En Tachei Repeated — Prologue-Epilogue Frame Closes¶
And he said unto me, These sayings [are] faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
Context: Epilogue. Exact repetition of Rev 1:1's 'en tachei' — closing the prologue-epilogue frame.
Notes: ἐν τάχει [PREP + N-DSN] G5034 — 'shortly' (same formula as Rev 1:1). The frame is complete: 1:1 → 22:6. 'Faithful and true' (pistos kai alēthinos) echoes the characterization from revs2-05.
Tachu — I Come Quickly (Conditional Imminence)¶
Behold, I come quickly: blessed [is] he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
Context: Christ's first direct speech in the epilogue. 'Quickly' = tachu (G5035 adverb).
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly.' This is the manner-adverb form (tachu, not en tachei). Recurs at 22:12 and 22:20 — three tachu declarations in the epilogue. The beatitude attached to 'keeping' = hypomonē in practice.
Kairos Engus — Second Inclusio Marker, Do Not Seal¶
And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
Context: Epilogue command. The prohibition against sealing inverts Dan 12:4's command to seal. The inclusio closes with 'ho kairos engus.'
Notes: μὴ σφραγίσῃς [V-AAS-2S] G4972 — prohibitive aorist subjunctive ('seal NOT'). Cross-testament parallels: Dan 12:4 and 12:9 scored highest as OT parallels (seal/time 0.337). The contrast is deliberate inversion: Dan 12:4 satam + chatham (seal up for many days) → Rev 22:10 mē sphragisēs (do NOT seal) because the time is near. καιρὸς [N-NSM] G2540 + ἐγγύς [ADV] G1451 — identical formula as Rev 1:3. Inclusio complete.
Seal 5 — Martyrs' Cry and Chronos Mikron¶
And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they [were], should be fulfilled.
Context: Fifth seal — martyrs under the altar. The 'how long?' cry and the 'little season' response. Chronos mikron marks a bounded waiting period.
Notes: ἐδόθη [V-API-3S] G1325 — 'were given' (divine passive — robes given). χρόνον μικρόν — 'a little season' G5550 chronos + G3398 mikros. G5550 word study: Rev 6:11 = 'Brief Remaining Period / Space for Action' semantic category. The martyrs' hypomonē = waiting for the accounting. The 'rest yet' + 'until' structure creates a bounded not-yet waiting period.
Ēlthen Hē Hēmera — Day of Wrath Declared Come at Seal 6¶
For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Context: Sixth seal. The terrified earth-dwellers declare the day of wrath 'is come' — though the bowls are still future.
Notes: ἦλθεν [V-2AAI-3S] G2064 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come' (hē hēmera hē megalē = 'the great day'). This is VP174 from revs2-20 (ēlthen at 6:17 and 11:18 as structural markers). The declaration at seal 6 is proleptic — the day is declared arrived before the seven bowls.
Great Multitude in Heaven — Already Perspective¶
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; [10] And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. [11-12 — angelic worship] [13-14] And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. [15-17 — divine dwelling, no more tears]
Context: Interlude between seals 6 and 7. The great multitude stands before the throne — heaven perspective showing the already-accomplished state of the redeemed.
Notes: The heaven perspective (7:9-17) shows the completed state of the redeemed multitude as an already-present reality. They 'came out of great tribulation' (aorist — completed exit from tribulation). The 'no more hunger/thirst/tears' anticipations (7:16-17) are expressed in future tenses from the earthly perspective but as present realities in the heavenly vision. Classic dual-perspective structure.
Seal the Book — Daniel's Sealed Contrast¶
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Context: Daniel's closing command. God commands the sealing of the words until 'the time of the end.'
Notes: סְתֹ֥ם (satam H5640) Verb.Qal.Impv.2ms — 'shut up' (imperative). חֲתֹ֣ם (chatham H2856) Verb.Qal.Impv.2ms — 'seal' (imperative). Both commands in sequence. Time marker: עַד עֵת קֵץ = 'until the time of the end.' This is the OT sealing command that Rev 22:10 inverts (mē sphragisēs — do NOT seal). The contrast signals the shift from sealed anticipation to open revelation.
Words Closed and Sealed — Participial State¶
And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words [are] closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
Context: Daniel's dismissal. The commands of Dan 12:4 (imperatives) are now described as accomplished state (participles).
Notes: סְתֻמִ֧ים (satam H5640) Verb.Qal.Ptcp.mp — 'are closed/stopped' (participle — state). חֲתֻמִ֛ים (chatham H2856) Verb.Qal.Ptcp.mp — 'are sealed' (participle — state). The imperatives of v.4 are now accomplished states in v.9. Same 'until time of end' marker. Top OT parallel for Rev 22:10 (0.337 score) and second parallel (0.303).
Seal the Vision — Many Days Future¶
And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told [is] true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it [shall be] for many days.
Context: End of the 2,300-day vision. Command to seal with explicit distance marker ('many days').
Notes: סְתֹ֣ם (satam H5640) Verb.Qal.Impv.2ms — 'shut up' (same root as Dan 12:4). Time marker: לְיָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים = 'for many days.' Contrast with Rev 22:10's engus (near) — the sealed distant future → the unsealed near present. The distance-to-nearness inversion is the core structural shift.
Now Is the Judgment — Satan Cast Out (Future Indicative)¶
Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die.
Context: Jesus' declaration at his triumphal entry. 'Now' (nyn) + future 'shall be cast out.' The cross is the moment of cosmic judgment.
Notes: ἐκβληθήσεται [V-FPI-3S] G1544 ekballō — Fut Pass Ind 3S — 'shall be cast out' (FUTURE — not aorist). CRITICAL: this is G1544 ekballō, NOT G906 ballo (used in Rev 12:9 eblēthē). Cognate but distinct root. The cross event is the pivot point for Satan's defeat — John 12:31 uses future, while Rev 12:9 looks back on the completed casting with aorist. The casting is the SAME event viewed from different temporal vantages.
Prince of This World Judged — Perfect State¶
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Context: Christ's Paraclete discourse. The Spirit convicts of judgment because Satan is judged — present as accomplished fact.
Notes: κέκριται [perfect indicative] — 'is judged' (perfect = completed with ongoing state). The perfect tense here marks the judgment as already accomplished with continuing validity — the 'already' of cosmic judgment.
Nenikeka — Christ's Perfect Victory Declaration¶
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Context: Farewell discourse. Christ's declaration of victory over the world — PERFECT tense, not aorist.
Notes: νενίκηκα [V-RAI-1S] G3528 Perf Act Ind Sg 1S — 'I have overcome' (PERFECT — completed with ongoing relevance). Contrast: Christ uses PERFECT here (ongoing validity emphasized), while at Rev 3:21 the aorist enikesan marks the completed act without emphasis on ongoing state. The perfect in John 16:33 grounds the disciples' present peace (present indicative: 'ye have peace') despite future tribulation.
Engus — Lord's Nearness in Pauline Context¶
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord [is] at hand.
Context: Philippians 4. Paul uses engus of the Lord's nearness — temporal, relational, or both.
Notes: ἐγγύς [ADV] G1451 — 'at hand' (engus). Per G1451 word study: Php 4:5 sits on the boundary between temporal nearness and relational proximity — the Lord's nearness is both imminent return and present oversight. 30 NT occurrences of engus; Revelation has 2 (1:3, 22:10) in the inclusio.
Aorist Redemption — Completed Cross-Work Declared¶
And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Context: Epistolary doxology. The aorists 'washed' (luonti) and 'made' (epoiēsen) describe completed cross-work.
Notes: luonti = participle from luō (G3089), washed/loosed — aorist active participle; epoiēsen [V-AAI-3S] G4160 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'hath made.' Both completed acts: the cross has already accomplished redemption and already constituted believers as a kingdom of priests. The 'already' of the redemptive work grounds the epistolary context.
Hypomonē — John's Co-Participation, First Occurrence¶
I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Context: John's self-introduction to the seven churches. He shares in 'the tribulation, kingdom, and patience of Jesus Christ.'
Notes: ὑπομονή [G5281] — first Revelation occurrence, positioned alongside thlipsis (tribulation) and basileia (kingdom). The triad 'tribulation + kingdom + patience' is the already/not-yet formula in miniature: tribulation is present reality, kingdom is partially realized, patience is the required posture of the interval. John's own exile models the hypomonē he calls the churches to.
Hypomonē in the Letters — Ephesus's Structural Endurance¶
I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
Context: Letter to Ephesus (Rev 2:1-7). Hypomonē commended twice in three verses.
Notes: ὑπομονή [G5281] appears twice. 'Hast borne' (ebastasas, aorist — specific incidents of bearing) and 'hast patience' (hypomonēn echeis, present indicative — ongoing state). The repeated commendation establishes hypomonē as a virtue the churches should exemplify during the tribulation interval.
Tachu — Conditional Disciplinary Coming¶
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
Context: Letter to Ephesus. Conditional tachu — 'I will come quickly' as disciplinary threat contingent on non-repentance.
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly' (tachy). Conditional structure: 'or else I will come quickly' = disciplinary intervention threatened, not the Parousia. Distinct from the eschatological tachy declarations of 22:7,12,20. This use constrains the semantic range — tachy can refer to local/specific divine actions, not only the final coming.
Tachu — Conditional-Disciplinary, Pergamos¶
Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
Context: Letter to Pergamos. Second conditional tachu threat — same structure as 2:5.
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly.' Same conditional disciplinary use as 2:5. 'Sword of my mouth' = verbal judgment, connecting to the Christophany in Rev 1:16. The tachy in the seven letters (2:5, 2:16) functions as conditional imminence; the tachy in the epilogue (3:11, 22:7, 22:12, 22:20) functions as eschatological promise.
Tachu — Transitional Promise, Hold Fast¶
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
Context: Letter to Philadelphia (transitional use — encouragement in the context of the 'hour of temptation' promise of 3:10).
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly.' This tachy appears mid-letters, before the epilogue cluster. It bridges the letters and the visions — the 'I come quickly' here is the first non-conditional tachy, functioning as promise rather than threat. 'Hold fast' = imperative response required during the interval before the coming.
Nikao Aorist — Lion Has Prevailed, Cross Victory¶
And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
Context: Throne room. The Lion of Judah is identified as the only worthy one. His prevailing (enikesan) is a completed act that qualifies him to open the sealed scroll.
Notes: ἐνίκησεν [V-AAI-3S] G3528 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'hath prevailed' (nikao aorist). This is the second christological nikao aorist (alongside 3:21 enikesan 1S). The cross-victory is complete — the Lion has already prevailed. The sealed scroll requires a prevailing one to open it; Christ's already-completed victory is the qualification. TM195 nikao taxonomy: self-originated aorist = Christ.
Chronos Ouketi Estai — Time No Longer¶
And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
Context: The mighty angel's oath (Rev 10:5-6). The cessation of chronos marks the end of the delay interval.
Notes: χρόνος [N-NSM] G5550 + οὐκέτι [ADV-N G3765] + ἔσται [V-FDI-3S] G1510 Fut Mid Ind 3S. 'Time shall be no longer' = the measured delay interval is declared complete. Chronos = elapsed measured duration (contrast kairos = appointed season). The cessation of chronos is the transitional declaration between the sixth and seventh trumpet — the remaining 'not yet' interval is closing. Rev 10:7 explains: 'the mystery of God should be finished' when the seventh angel sounds.
Egeneto Aorist Kingdom — Prophetic Perfect at the Seventh Trumpet¶
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
Context: Seventh trumpet. The kingdom announcement using the proleptic/prophetic aorist egeneto — declared accomplished from the heavenly vantage point.
Notes: Ἐγένετο [V-2ADI-3S] G1096 Aor Mid Ind 3S — 'are become' (prophetic/proleptic aorist). βασιλεύσει [V-FAI-3S] G936 Fut Act Ind 3S — 'he shall reign' (future). The tense contrast within the same announcement: the transfer is declared accomplished (aorist) while the endless reign is stated as future. NT parallel: Rev 12:10 (highest parallel, 0.507). OT background: Dan 2:44 and 7:27.
Temple Opened — Theophany Escalation, Naos Access Contrast¶
And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Context: Immediate sequel to the seventh trumpet kingdom announcement (11:15-18). The temple opens — contrast with 15:8 where it closes.
Notes: The naos (temple) OPENS at 11:19 — access to the ark of the covenant. This contrasts with Rev 15:8 where the naos is CLOSED (filled with smoke) until the bowls are finished. The pattern: open (11:19) → closed (15:8) → complete (16:17 gegonen) tracks the judgment timeline. From revs2-20 theophany formula escalation.
Oligon Kairon — Dragon's Temporal Compression¶
Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Context: Heaven's dual announcement: celebration for heaven, woe for earth. The dragon's awareness of his limited time.
Notes: κατέβη [V-2AAI-3S] G2597 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'is come down' (aorist = completed descent). ἔχων [V-PAP-NSM] — 'having' great wrath (present). εἰδὼς [V-RAP-NSM] G1492 Perf Act Ptcp — 'knoweth' (perfect participle = knowing with certainty). ἔχει [V-PAI-3S] G2192 — 'hath' (present). ὀλίγον καιρὸν [G2540, G3398] = 'a short time/season' (kairos, not chronos — appointed season, not measured duration). The dragon's knowledge of his limited kairos intensifies his rage — the not-yet interval that the church must endure is the dragon's short-but-intense season.
Beast from Sea — Edothē Passives Introduce Dragon's Agent¶
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Context: Beast introduction (Rev 13:1-4). The dragon's derivative authority transfer to the beast — active giving (ἔδωκεν) by the dragon, contrasted with the passive edothē (V-API-3S) at vv.5,7 where unnamed divine sovereignty limits the beast.
Notes: ἔδωκεν [V-AAI-3S] G1325 Aor Act Ind 3S — v.2 'dragon GAVE' (active — dragon as named subject). Contrast with v.5,7 ἐδόθη [V-API-3S] G1325 Aor Pass Ind 3S (divine passive — unnamed divine subject). The distinction is structural: the dragon's active giving of power to the beast stands behind the passives that limit that power. 'Who is like unto the beast?' = parody of the divine 'who is like God?' (mi khamocha). From revs2-19.
Naos Closed — Temple Sealed Until Bowls Complete¶
And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: Transition to the bowl judgments. The naos is closed — no entry until the seven plagues are finished.
Notes: The naos (G3485) closed with smoke — same structure as Exodus 40 and 1 Kings 8 (divine glory filling the sanctuary, preventing entry). Contrast with Rev 11:19 (naos opened). The closure until 'bowls fulfilled' establishes a bounded not-yet interval — the final judgment sequence must complete before the naos reopens. From revs2-13.
Three Temporal Categories — Fallen/Is/Not Yet Come in One Verse¶
And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, [and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
Context: Angel's interpretation of the seven heads (Rev 17:10). Three temporal categories within a single verse.
Notes: 'Five are fallen' = past (epesan, aorist). 'One is' = present (estin, present indicative). 'Not yet come' = future (oupō ēlthen, oupō = not yet + aorist = has not come yet). Three tenses in one verse creating a past/present/future temporal map. 'A short space' = oligon dein autom menein — the final king's reign is bounded and brief.
Final Battle — The Not-Yet Realized in Narrative¶
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies [which were] in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. [17-21 — angel's supper invitation, beast and kings gathered, beast and false prophet cast into lake of fire, remnant slain]
Context: The rider on the white horse and the final battle. This is the not-yet that the proleptic aorists of Rev 11:15, 12:10, 14:8, 19:6-7 anticipate.
Notes: The rider is called Faithful and True (Pistos kai Alēthinos — revs2-05 thread) and the Word of God (Logos tou Theou). 'KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS' at v.16 reverses the beast's titles from 17:14 — the lamb who shall overcome (future nikēsei at 17:14) is now shown overcoming. The cast of beast and false prophet into the lake of fire (v.20) is the ballo arc's penultimate step (preceding the dragon at 20:10). This scene is the actualization of what the proleptic aorists declared accomplished.
Tachu — Third Epilogue Declaration¶
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
Context: Epilogue. Third tachu declaration in Rev 22 (following 22:7). Reward language added.
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly.' The reward formula 'to give every man according as his work shall be' echoes the judgment/accountability language of 11:18 and 20:12-13. The tachy here marks the imminence of the final accounting, not just the arrival of the person.
Tachu — Final and Definitive Declaration, Community Response¶
He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
Context: Final words of Christ in Revelation. The community's liturgical response: 'Even so, come, Lord Jesus.'
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly' (nai, erchomai tachy = 'yes, I come quickly'). The church's response 'Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus' = marana tha — the Aramaic liturgical prayer (cf. 1 Cor 16:22). This is the eschatological amen that closes the entire book's temporal framework: en tachei (1:1) → ho kairos engus (1:3) → tachy × 6 (2:5,16; 3:11; 22:7,12,20) → community response. The already/not-yet framework closes with petition for the not-yet to arrive.
Ha Dei Genesthai — Daniel's LXX Source for Rev 1:1¶
But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
Context: Daniel interpreting Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Dan 2). The LXX of this verse contains 'ha dei genesthai' — the exact phrase repeated in Rev 1:1.
Notes: LXX Dan 2:28: 'ha dei genesthai ep' eschatōn tōn hēmerōn' = 'what must come to pass in the last days.' Rev 1:1: 'ha dei genesthai en tachei' = 'what must shortly come to pass.' Rev 1:1 echoes Dan 2:28 verbatim except for the time modifier: 'in the last days' → 'shortly.' This substitution is the key temporal shift — Daniel's distant 'latter days' becomes Revelation's imminent 'shortly.'
Time Times and Half a Time — Parallel to Rev 12:14¶
And he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Context: Daniel's vision of the fourth beast (Dan 7). The little horn's 3.5-year period — the same time formula as Rev 12:14.
Notes: Aramaic: 'iddan v'iddanin u'pelug iddan' = 'a time and times and the dividing of time' = 3.5 years. This exact formula appears at Rev 12:14 ('a time, and times, and half a time') — same temporal period as the 42 months (Rev 13:5) and 1,260 days (Rev 12:6). The saints 'given into his hand' echoes the edothē passives of Rev 13:7.
Naphal Naphal — Hebrew Prophetic Perfect Doublet Source¶
And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, [with] a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
Context: Isaiah's 'burden of Babylon' oracle. The doublet 'is fallen, is fallen' = Hebrew prophetic perfect (qatal used for future certainty).
Notes: Hebrew: naphal naphal Babel = 'fallen, fallen is Babylon' (qatal doublet — prophetic perfect). This is the direct OT source for Rev 14:8 and 18:2's Greek epesen epesen. The LXX renders naphal with epesen (G4098) — the doublet structure is preserved. The repetition in the Hebrew marks the certainty of the announcement. Rev 14:8 declares Babylon's fall prolepticaly before Rev 17-18 narrate it.
Prophetic Perfect in Isaiah — OT Precedent¶
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Context: Isaiah's fourth Servant Song. All Hebrew verbs are past-tense qatal forms describing the Servant's future suffering as accomplished fact.
Notes: Hebrew qatal (perfect) throughout vv.4-5 describes future events as completed — the prophetic perfect in its most concentrated OT form. 'He was wounded' (chilal, Pual perfect), 'he was bruised' (daka, Pual perfect), 'by his stripes we are healed' (niphal perfect). The LXX translates with aorists — the same Greek aorist tense that Rev 14:8 and 18:2 use for the proleptic doublet. This establishes the OT precedent for prophetic aorists that announce future events as accomplished.
Pauline Prophetic Aorist — Glorified as Past¶
Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Context: Romans 8:29-30 golden chain. 'Glorified' is aorist — future glorification stated as already accomplished.
Notes: ἐδόξασεν [V-AAI-3S] G1392 Aor Act Ind 3S — 'glorified' (aorist). This is the Pauline precedent for the prophetic/proleptic aorist: future glorification stated in past tense because it is so certain in God's purpose as to be counted done. Confirms that proleptic aorist use is not unique to Revelation — it is a recognizable Koine/LXX grammatical-rhetorical device.
En Tachei in Paul — Temporal Imminence Outside Revelation¶
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. Amen.
Context: Romans closing. 'Shortly' = en tachei — same phrase as Rev 1:1 and 22:6.
Notes: ἐν τάχει [G5034, N-DSN] — 'shortly' (en tachei). Pauline use in a clear temporal-imminence context: the Satan-bruising is promised to happen soon. This supports the temporal-imminence reading of en tachei at Rev 1:1 — in Paul's usage, the phrase clearly means 'soon, within a short time,' not 'swiftly when it comes.' Alludes to Gen 3:15 (seed bruising serpent's head).
Michael and the Devil — Contention Over Moses' Body¶
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Context: Jude's citation of a conflict between Michael and the devil. Michael appears here as agent in cosmic conflict — parallel to his role in Rev 12:7.
Notes: Michael = the archangel who contends with the devil (Jude) and leads the war in heaven (Rev 12:7). The devil is the 'accuser' (katēgorōn at Rev 12:10) — his role as prosecutor/accuser spans both Jude and Revelation. The Michael-devil conflict background illuminates Rev 12:7-9 as part of a larger pattern of cosmic legal/military contest.
Destroy Works of Devil — Cross-Event Already¶
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Context: 1 John 3. The Son of God's purpose in incarnation: to destroy devil's works.
Notes: ἐφανερώθη [V-API-3S] G5319 Aor Pass Ind 3S — 'was manifested' (aorist = completed event). λύσῃ [V-AAS-3S] G3089 Aor Act Subj 3S — 'might destroy' (aorist subjunctive = purpose). The cross-event 'already' of 1 John 3:8 parallels John 16:33 (nenikēka) and John 12:31 (ekblēthēsetai future). The devil's works are being destroyed — the 'already' of manifestation grounds the ongoing destruction.
Destroy Devil Through Death — Cross Already¶
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Context: Hebrews 2. Christ's incarnation specifically to destroy the devil through death.
Notes: καταργήσῃ [V-AAS-3S] G2673 Aor Act Subj 3S — 'might destroy/render inoperative.' The perfect understanding: Christ's death has already accomplished the defeat of the one holding the power of death. The devil 'had' (past tense) the power of death — but Christ's death changed that. The 'already' of the cross: the devil's power of death is destroyed (even while death itself continues until the final resurrection).
Tachu in Vision — Speed/Urgency Meaning¶
And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
Context: Paul's recounting of his vision in the temple. 'Quickly' = tachu — instruction to depart with speed.
Notes: ταχύ [ADV] G5035 — 'quickly' (speed/urgency use, not eschatological imminence). 'Make haste and get quickly out of Jerusalem' is a manner-of-action use — the urgency is about speed of departure, not temporal nearness of an event. This establishes that tachy has a non-eschatological semantic range alongside its eschatological uses in Revelation. The word can mean 'quickly/swiftly' (manner) or 'soon' (temporal). Context determines which.
Satan Fall as Lightning — Jesus's Pre-Cross Declaration¶
And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Context: Jesus's response to the 70 returning from ministry. He sees Satan's defeat in the disciples' successful exorcisms.
Notes: ἐθεώρουν [G2334, imperfect] — 'I was beholding' (imperfect = ongoing action). Σατανᾶν [G4567] + πεσόντα [G4098, aorist participle] — 'Satan having fallen.' The imperfect of viewing + aorist participle = Jesus watched as Satan fell. The NT parallel tool confirmed this as the highest NT parallel for Rev 12:9 (0.349). The pre-cross declaration connects to Rev 12:9's casting out — the cosmic ejection Jesus witnessed in the disciples' exorcisms is the same pattern magnified in Rev 12.
