Question

How do trumpets 5-7 (the three "woes") differ structurally from trumpets 1-4? What is the role of the trumpet interlude (the little book and the two witnesses, Rev 10:1-11:14)? How does the seventh trumpet's kingdom announcement (Rev 11:15-18) function as both climax and transition? What is the relationship between the seventh trumpet and the bowls?

Trumpets 1-4: Formulaic nature judgments with one-third fraction

The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

Context: Trumpets 1-4 follow the seven-trumpet distribution scene (8:2,6). Brief, formulaic, nature-targeting, with the one-third fraction appearing 11 times. These serve as the structural baseline for comparison with trumpets 5-7.

Notes: TM075 documents the one-third fraction (to triton, G5154) appearing 11 times in these 6 verses. TM076 documents the formulaic trumpet-sounding formula. SP055 (Strong) documents that trumpets 1-4 and bowls 1-4 target the same domains in the same order: earth, sea, rivers, sun.

Triple ouai announcement: structural hinge dividing trumpets 4+3

And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

Context: This verse stands between trumpet 4 (8:12) and trumpet 5 (9:1), functioning as a structural hinge. The triple ouai formally designates trumpets 5-7 as 'woe trumpets' and shifts the target from creation domains to humanity.

Notes: TM070 established this triple-ouai marker. The phrase tous katoikountas epi tes ges (those dwelling upon the earth) uses katoikeo (G2730), the technical term for ungodly earth-dwellers that recurs at Rev 3:10, 6:10, 11:10, 13:8, 17:8. mello salpizein (V-PAP-GPM + V-PAN) = 'about to trumpet' implies imminence.

Fifth trumpet / First woe: star fallen, key to abyss, locust-army restrictions

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment [was] as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

Context: The fifth trumpet opens the woe-trumpet sequence. Key vocabulary: phrear (G5421) and abyssos (G12) appear together as 'the pit of the abyss.' The star is peptokota (perfect participle of pipto G4098) = already fallen, not falling. Rev 9:4 explicitly prohibits harming grass/trees β€” the very targets of trumpets 1-2 β€” confirming the domain shift.

Notes: peptokota (V-RAP-ASM, perfect active participle) indicates a star that had already fallen before the trumpet sounded β€” a state, not an event. The seal of God (sphragis tou Theou) at 9:4 connects directly to Rev 7:3 (sealing of the 144,000), supporting the structural connection between the seal interlude and the woe trumpets. edothe (V-API-3S, aorist passive of didomi G1325) = divine passive β€” authority 'was given' by God.

Fifth trumpet: locust description and king Abaddon/Apollyon

And the shapes of the locusts [were] like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads [were] as it were crowns like gold, and their faces [were] as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as [the teeth] of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings [was] as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power [was] to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, [which is] the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue [is] Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath [his] name Apollyon.

Context: The locust description transforms Joel 2's divine army into a demonic force. The bilingual naming (Abaddon H11 / Apollyon G623) is unique in Revelation. Apollyon = active present participle of apollymi G622, 'the one who destroys.'

Notes: AN031 (Strong) documents the Joel 2 allusion. Key transformation: Joel 2:25 identifies the locusts as 'my great army which I sent among you' β€” God's army. Rev 9's locusts emerge from the abyss under a destroyer-king β€” a demonic inversion. Shared elements: horse-like appearance (Joel 2:4 / Rev 9:7), chariot noise (Joel 2:5 / Rev 9:9), battle array, fire. Rev 9:11 has the bilingual naming: Hebraisti Abaddon (G3, H11) and en te Hellenike Apollyon (G623).

First woe-closure formula

One woe is past; [and], behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

Context: TM071: the woe-closure formula he Ouai he mia apelthen. Ouai is treated as a feminine noun with the definite article. apelthen = V-2AAI-3S, aorist of aperchomai G565.

  • He (G3588) β€” T-NSF β€” Nom Sg F
  • Ouai (G3759) β€” N-OI β€” he ho G3588 [T-NSF] Nom Sg F

  • eti (G2089) β€” ADV β€” duo duo G1417 [A-NUI]
  • tauta. (G3778) β€” D-APN β€” Acc Pl N

Notes: The formula structure: article + Ouai + article + ordinal + apelthen (aorist, 'departed/passed'). erchetai (V-PNI-3S, present middle/passive indicative) = 'cometh' β€” the remaining woes are presented as coming in the present tense, implying immediacy.

Sixth trumpet / Second woe: voice from golden altar, four angels at Euphrates

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. And the number of the army of the horsemen [were] two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

Context: The golden altar (thysiasteriou tou chrysou) at Rev 9:13 connects to the altar vindication arc (SP037): the same altar that received prayers (8:3-5) now issues a judgment command. The Euphrates boundary marks the eastern frontier of the Roman world.

Notes: The voice comes ek ton tessaron keraton β€” from the four horns β€” of the golden altar. In the OT, horns of the altar were associated with asylum and intercession (Exo 27:2, 1 Kings 1:50-51). Here the altar transitions from intercession to command, advancing the altar vindication arc. The 200 million cavalry (dismyriades myriadon) is an innumerable host.

Sixth trumpet: horse description β€” lion heads, fire/smoke/brimstone, tail-power

And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses [were] as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails [were] like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

Context: The sixth trumpet's cavalry escalates from torment (5th trumpet) to killing (a third of men). Fire, smoke, and brimstone form a triad echoing Sodom's destruction (Gen 19:24). The one-third fraction reappears here (9:18) β€” the last occurrence before the bowls eliminate fractions entirely.

Notes: to triton ton anthropon (the third part of men) at 9:18 is the only occurrence of the one-third fraction in the woe trumpets, and it shifts from nature (trumpets 1-4) to humanity β€” confirming the domain transition.

Failed repentance: humanity does not repent despite plagues

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Context: The structural bookend: after six trumpet-judgments, humanity does not repent. ou metanoesan (V-AAI-3P, aorist of metanoeo G3340) = 'they did not repent.' The idol-list (gold, silver, brass, stone, wood) echoes Dan 5:23 and Deut 4:28/Psa 115:4-7. plege (G4127) retroactively labels trumpet judgments as 'plagues,' confirming the Exodus connection.

Notes: This is the narrative pivot for the warning-to-final-judgment transition. If trumpets are warnings and humanity does not repent, the bowls escalate to total judgment. Rev 16:9 and 16:11 repeat the same ou metanoesan formula during the bowls, confirming the pattern. The two-verse list covers: idolatry (9:20) + four moral sins (murders, sorceries, fornication, thefts at 9:21).

Mighty angel with open little book, seven thunders sealed

And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow [was] upon his head, and his face [was] as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and [his] left [foot] on the earth, And cried with a loud voice, as [when] a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

Context: The trumpet interlude opens (episode 1). The angel's theophanic features (cloud, rainbow, sun-face, fire-feet) echo Dan 10:5-6 and Rev 1:13-16. biblaridion (G974) = diminutive scroll, distinct from biblion (G975). eneogmenon (V-RPP-ASN, perfect passive participle of anoigo G455) = permanently opened state.

Notes: TM078: biblaridion appears only in Rev 10:2,8,9,10. The seven thunders are sealed (sphragison, imperative of sphragizo G4972) β€” the only content in Revelation that is sealed rather than revealed. Scholarly proposal (Storms/Bauckham): the thunders represent cancelled warning judgments β€” earlier plagues proved ineffective (9:20-21), so no more warnings; bowls are unlimited and final.

Angel's oath scene: Dan 12:7 parallel, time declaration, mystery of God finished

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

Context: VP090 (Strong, 5 links): Dan 12:7 parallel β€” standing upon waters, hand raised to heaven, oath by eternal God, time-related declaration, creation/sovereignty context. Content INVERTS: Dan 12:7 declares a duration; Rev 10:6 declares duration's end.

Notes: chronos ouketi estai (G5550 + G3765 + V-FDI-3S) = 'time shall no longer be.' etelesthe (V-API-3S, aorist passive of teleo G5055) = 'was finished/completed.' melle salpizein (G3195 V-PAS-3S + G4537 V-PAN) = 'is about to trumpet.' en tais hemerais (in the days) β€” plural hemerais implies duration, not a momentary event. TM073 flags this: the seventh trumpet has 'days' (plural). The raz-mysterion chain: Dan 2:28 (Aramaic raz) β†’ Rev 10:7 (to mysterion tou theou etelesthe).

Eating the little book: sweet/bitter, prophetic recommission

And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go [and] take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take [it], and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter. And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

Context: Ezek 2:9-3:3 allusion modified: both are sweet in the mouth, but Revelation adds bitterness INTRINSIC to the eating (Ezek's bitterness comes later at 3:14). The heavenly voice uses biblion (10:8) while John uses biblaridion (10:2,9,10) β€” this vocabulary alternation is significant for the scroll-identity debate.

Notes: propheteusai (V-AAN, aorist active infinitive of propheteuo G4395) β€” the ONLY aorist infinitive of propheteuo in the NT. dei (G1163, divine necessity) + palin (G3825, again) = must prophesy again. This recommission bridges episode 1 (prophetic authorization) to episode 2 (prophetic demonstration in 11:1-14).

Temple measuring: naos measured, outer court given to Gentiles, 42 months

And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months.

Context: naos (G3485) = inner sanctuary, not the broader hieron. Measuring signifies protection/preservation (cf. Ezek 40-42). The outer court is 'given' (edothe, divine passive) to the Gentiles. 42 months = first of the 3.5-year period formulations in this chapter.

Notes: The 42 months (tessarakonta duo menas, G5062 + G1417 + G3376) = 3.5 years = 1260 days. TM079 tracks seven formulations of this period across Daniel and Revelation. The months formulation is associated with oppression/treading (11:2, 13:5).

Two witnesses commissioned: 1260 days, sackcloth, Moses/Elijah powers

And I will give [power] unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

Context: 1260 days = days formulation associated with witness/protection. AN038 (Explicit): Rev 11:4 near-verbatim Zech 4:14 allusion. AN039 (Strong, 4 links): Moses/Elijah divided powers β€” fire from mouth (2 Kings 1:10-12, Jer 5:14), shutting heaven (1 Kings 17:1), water to blood (Exo 7:17-20).

Notes: hestotes (V-RAP-NPM, perfect active participle of histemi G2476) in 11:4 = 'standing' β€” a settled state of position before God. The masculine participle hestotes with feminine antecedents (elaia, lychnia) is constructio ad sensum β€” the witnesses are persons. Fire from mouth: Jer 5:14 'I will make my words in thy mouth fire' β€” the fire IS the prophetic word.

Witnesses killed by beast from abyss: great city = Sodom/Egypt

And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies [shall lie] in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

Context: The beast from the abyss (therion to anabainon ek tes abyssou) links to Rev 17:8 beast vocabulary. pneumatikos (G4152) at 11:8 = 'spiritually' β€” signals typological identification (Sodom = moral corruption, Egypt = oppression). hoi katoikountes epi tes ges (those dwelling on the earth) at 11:10 = the same technical earth-dweller formula.

Notes: The beast from the abyss creates a vocabulary chain: abyssos at 9:1-2 (opened), 9:11 (angel-king), 11:7 (beast ascends), 17:8 (beast ascends), 20:1-3 (Satan bound). The three and a half days (hemeras treis kai hemisy) echoes the 3.5-year period in miniature.

Witnesses resurrected and ascend: earthquake, survivors give glory to God

And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Context: TM082: Rev 11:13 is UNIQUE in Revelation β€” surviving humanity 'gave glory to the God of heaven.' This contrasts with the impenitence of 9:20-21 and the blasphemy of 16:9,11,21. The Spirit of life entering them parallels Ezek 37:5,10 (dry bones). The ascension in a cloud echoes Christ's ascension (Acts 1:9).

Notes: edokan doxan to theo tou ouranou = gave glory to the God of heaven. This positive response stands in stark contrast to every other human response to judgment in Revelation. Whether this represents genuine repentance or merely terrified acknowledgment is debated.

Second woe-closure and third woe announcement

The second woe is past; [and], behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

Context: TM071: second instance of the woe-closure formula (he Ouai he deutera apelthen). The third woe is announced (he Ouai he trite erchetai tachy) but NEVER declared 'past' anywhere in Revelation β€” a critical structural asymmetry.

  • Ouai (G3759) β€” N-OI β€” deutera deuteros G1208 [A-NSF] Nom Sg F
  • apelthen (G565) β€” V-2AAI-3S β€” Aor Act Ind Sg thirdPers

Notes: apelthen (V-2AAI-3S, aorist of aperchomai G565) = 'departed/passed.' erchetai (V-PNI-3S, present of erchomai G2064) = 'cometh' β€” present tense for imminent arrival. tachy (ADV) = quickly/soon. The missing third-woe closure is one of the strongest arguments for the third woe extending beyond Rev 11:15-19 into subsequent chapters.

Seventh trumpet: kingdom announcement β€” proleptic aorist and future reign

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Context: VP096 (Strong, 4 links): parallels Rev 16:17 β€” seventh position, great voice, ginomai declaration, naos as voice origin. Egeneto (V-2ADI-3S, aorist of ginomai G1096) = proleptic aorist declaring the kingdom transfer as accomplished. basileusei (V-FAI-3S, future of basileuo G936) = 'he shall reign' β€” the only explicit future in the passage.

  • esalpisen (G4537) β€” V-AAI-3S β€” Aor Act Ind Sg thirdPers

  • kosmou (G2889) β€” N-GSM β€” Gen Sg M
  • basileusei (G936) β€” V-FAI-3S β€” Fut Act Ind Sg thirdPers

Notes: The critical text reads he basileia (singular, 'the kingdom of the world') vs. TR hai basileiai (plural, 'the kingdoms'). egenonto (V-2ADI-3P) introduces the voices; Egeneto (V-2ADI-3S) declares the transfer. The pairing of proleptic aorist (egeneto) with future (basileusei) in the same verse is deliberate: the decisive act is accomplished, its consequences extend eternally.

Twenty-four elders' worship: eilephas (perfect), ebasileusas (aorist)

And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

Context: eilephas (V-2RAI-2S, perfect of lambano G2983) = 'you have taken and now hold.' ebasileusas (V-AAI-2S, aorist of basileuo G936) = ingressive/proleptic aorist, 'you have begun to reign.' The divine title abbreviation: ho on kai ho en β€” MISSING ho erchomenos ('the coming one'), because from this vantage point God has already come.

Notes: The perfect-then-aorist sequence (eilephas + ebasileusas) is exegetically significant: the perfect establishes a state (God has seized and now holds power), the aorist marks the decisive exercise of that power. Rev 19:6 uses ebasileusen (V-AAI-3S) in the same ingressive-proleptic pattern. The missing ho erchomenos appears at 1:4, 1:8, 4:8 but is dropped at 11:17 and 16:5.

Five-element programmatic announcement: nations, wrath, judgment, reward, destruction

And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

Context: TM084/SP044: Five-element program mapping to subsequent fulfillments. (1) orgisthesan (V-API-3P) 'nations were angry' β†’ Rev 12-13. (2) elthen he orge (V-2AAI-3S) 'thy wrath came' β†’ Rev 15-16. (3) krithenai (V-APN) 'dead judged' β†’ Rev 20:11-15. (4) dounai ton misthon (V-2AAN) 'give reward' β†’ Rev 21-22. (5) diaphtheirai tous diaphtheirontas (V-AAN + V-PAP-APM) 'destroy the destroyers' β†’ Rev 19:17-21.

Notes: The orgisthesan/orge wordplay is phonetically emphatic in Greek. The three aorist infinitives (krithenai, dounai, diaphtheirai) are epexegetical, specifying the content of ho kairos. The diaphtheirai/diaphtheirontas word-play uses aorist infinitive (God's decisive act) vs. present participle (destroyers' ongoing activity). Psa 2:1-2 is the OT background for nations raging against God's anointed.

Temple opened, ark visible, theophany formula (5 elements) β€” Janus verse

And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Context: TM057 theophany formula escalation: Rev 4:5 (3 elements), 8:5 (4 elements), 11:19 (5 elements), 16:18-21 (5+ intensified). enoige (V-2API-3S, aorist passive of anoigo G455) = temple was opened. ophthe (V-API-3S, aorist passive of horao G3708) = the ark was seen β€” both divine passives. AN040 (Probable): ark visibility alludes to Lev 16:2,13-15 Day of Atonement. The 5 theophany elements: astrapai (lightnings), phonai (voices), brontai (thunderings), seismos (earthquake), chalaza megale (great hail). chalaza inclusio: appears at trumpet 1 (8:7) and 7th trumpet theophany (11:19), bracketing the entire trumpet sequence.

Seven last plagues β€” wrath of God finished (etelesthe)

And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.

Context: VP084 (Minimal, 2 links): Rev 10:7 and 15:1 share etelesthe (aorist passive of teleo G5055) + tou Theou. But the subjects differ: 10:7 = to mysterion tou Theou (mystery of God), 15:1 = ho thymos tou Theou (wrath/fury of God). Both are 'finished' in the same grammatical form.

Notes: etelesthe (V-API-3S) is identical in both passages. thymos (G2372) is used here, not orge (G3709) β€” the wrath vocabulary distinction. SP045 identifies the orge-thymos continuum: 7th trumpet announces orge (settled judgment), bowls pour thymos (burning fury), climax combines both (tou thymou tes orges at 16:19, 19:15).

Temple opened, angels with bowls, no man able to enter β€” Day of Atonement allusion

And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

Context: VP082 (Moderate, 3 links): naos + anoigo + en to ourano shared with Rev 11:19. VP097 (Moderate, 3 links): Rev 15:8 'no man was able to enter' echoes Lev 16:17 'no man shall be in the tabernacle when he goeth in to make an atonement.' The full phrase: ho naos tes skenes tou martyriou = 'the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony.'

Notes: The compound designation naos tes skenes tou martyriou combines three sanctuary terms: naos (inner sanctuary), skene (tent/tabernacle), martyrion (testimony/witness). This is the most elaborated sanctuary reference in Revelation. The smoke filling the temple (egemisthe ho naos kapnou) parallels Exo 40:34-35 and 1 Kings 8:10-11 β€” the Shekinah glory filling the sanctuary.

Bowl-pouring command from temple β€” voice origin parallels Rev 11:15

And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

Context: The voice source (ek tou naou, from the temple) parallels the voice at 11:15 (en to ourano, in heaven). VP096 notes the naos as shared voice-origin for both the 7th trumpet and 7th bowl.

Notes: phone megale ek tou naou = great voice from the temple. Since 15:8 says 'no man was able to enter,' this voice originates from God himself within the sanctuary. The bowls are called phialai (G5357) β€” broad, shallow bowls used for libation, suggesting swift pouring.

Seventh bowl: 'It is done' (gegonen), theophany formula maximal, great hail

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, [and] so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, [every stone] about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

Context: VP096 culmination: Gegonen (V-2RAI-3S, perfect of ginomai G1096) = 'It has been done / it is accomplished.' Contrast with Egeneto (aorist) at 11:15 β€” the perfect tense at the bowl climax marks completed action with permanent results. The theophany formula reaches its maximum: voices, thunders, lightnings, great earthquake (unlike any before), great hail (talent-weight).

Notes: Gegonen (perfect) vs. Egeneto (aorist): the 7th trumpet uses aorist (proleptic β€” views the future as accomplished), the 7th bowl uses perfect (the action is now genuinely completed with abiding results). tou thymou tes orges at 16:19 combines both wrath words: thymos (burning fury) + orge (settled judgment). chalaza megale at 16:21 completes the chalaza inclusio begun at 8:7 and continued at 11:19.

Theophany formula tier 1: three elements

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Context: TM057 baseline: 3 theophany elements β€” astrapai (lightnings), brontai (thunderings), phonai (voices). This is the initial presentation of the Sinai-theophany formula in Revelation.

Notes: No earthquake, no hail β€” these are added in successive occurrences. The seven lamps of fire (hepta lampades pyros) are identified as the seven Spirits of God.

Theophany formula tier 2: four elements (earthquake added)

And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast [it] into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

Context: TM057 escalation: 4 elements β€” phonai, brontai, astrapai, seismos. Earthquake added. This occurs at the transition from the incense prelude to the trumpet series.

Notes: The order changes from Rev 4:5 (lightnings, thunderings, voices) to Rev 8:5 (voices, thunderings, lightnings, earthquake). The addition of seismos (earthquake) marks escalation.

Third ouai occurrence within dragon narrative β€” woe to earth-dwellers

Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Context: The only ouai between Rev 11:14 and the Babylon laments (18:10ff). Structurally significant: it places a 'woe' within the dragon narrative AFTER the seventh trumpet has sounded, supporting the reading that the third woe extends into chapters 12+.

Notes: ouai (G3759) + tous katoikountas ten gen kai ten thalassan = woe to the inhabiters of the earth AND the sea. The devil's thymos (G2372, great wrath) parallels the bowl vocabulary. oligon kairon (G2540, short time) echoes the eschatological time-consciousness.

OT locust-army source for fifth trumpet

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for [it is] nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, [even] to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land [is] as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them [is] as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and [when] they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp [is] very great: for [he is] strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD [is] great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

Context: AN031 OT source. Joel's locust-army is explicitly God's army (2:25 'my great army which I sent among you'). Revelation transforms: the army emerges from the abyss under Abaddon/Apollyon. Shared elements: horse-like appearance (2:4), chariot noise (2:5), fire (2:3), battle array (2:5), darkened sun (2:10).

Notes: Joel 2:1 also opens with trumpet-blowing (shopar, H7782), linking to the trumpet-judgment genre. Joel 2:9 'enter in at the windows like a thief' may connect to Rev 16:15 'I come as a thief.' Joel 2:11 'who can abide it?' parallels Rev 6:17 'who shall be able to stand?'

OT source for two olive trees and candlestick β€” anointed ones standing before the Lord

And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all [of] gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which [are] upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right [side] of the bowl, and the other upon the left [side] thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What [are] these, my lord? Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. Who [art] thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel [thou shalt become] a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone [thereof with] shoutings, [crying], Grace, grace unto it. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel [with] those seven; they [are] the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. Then answered I, and said unto him, What [are] these two olive trees upon the right [side] of the candlestick and upon the left [side] thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What [be these] two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden [oil] out of themselves? And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these [be]? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These [are] the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.

Context: AN038 (Explicit): Rev 11:4 is a near-verbatim quotation of Zech 4:14. Zechariah's two anointed ones (bene-hayyitshar, 'sons of oil') were Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the governor β€” priestly and royal figures. Revelation transforms them into prophetic witnesses.

Notes: Zech 4:14 LXX: houtoi hoi duo huioi tes piottetos parestekasi kurio pases tes ges. Rev 11:4: hautai eisin hai duo elaiai kai hai duo lychniai hai enopion tou Kyriou tes ges hestotes. Both use 'standing before the Lord of the earth.' Zech 4:6 'Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit' provides the theological key: the witnesses' power is divine, not human.

OT source for sealed book and oath scene

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. And [one] said to the man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river, How long [shall it be to] the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that [it shall be] for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these [things] shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what [shall be] the end of these [things]? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words [are] closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

Context: VP090 (Strong, 5 links) documents the Dan 12:7 / Rev 10:5-6 parallel. Both scenes: standing upon waters, hand(s) raised to heaven, oath by eternal God, time-related declaration, creation/sovereignty context. Content INVERTS: Dan 12:7 declares a duration (time, times, half); Rev 10:6 declares duration's end (time no longer).

Notes: chatham (H2856, to seal) in Dan 12:4,9 maps to sphragizo (G4972) in Revelation. satham (H5640, to shut up) in Dan 12:4 = the sealed state that is reversed by Rev 10:2's eneogmenon (permanently opened). The sealed-to-unsealed vocabulary arc: chatham/satham (seal/shut, Dan 12:4) β†’ eneogmenon (opened, Rev 10:2).

OT source for scroll-eating β€” written within and without, sweet as honey

And when I looked, behold, an hand [was] sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book [was] therein; And he spread it before me; and it [was] written within and without: and [there was] written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe. Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll. And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat [it]; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.

Context: AN037 (Strong) documents the Ezekiel scroll-eating allusion. Key modification in Revelation: Ezekiel's scroll is ONLY sweet (3:3), with bitterness coming later as an emotional aftermath (3:14). Rev 10:9-10 makes the bitterness INTRINSIC to the eating β€” the scroll itself is both sweet and bitter.

Notes: Ezekiel's scroll is 'written within and without' (2:10) β€” Rev 5:1's biblion is similarly 'written within and on the backside.' Both scrolls contain judgment content (Ezekiel: lamentations, mourning, woe). The scroll-eating pattern: divine command β†’ prophetic consumption β†’ prophetic commission to speak.

OT source for Sinai theophany formula

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

Context: TM057 OT source for the Sinai-theophany formula. Elements: thunders (brontai), lightnings (astrapai), thick cloud, trumpet voice (phone salpingos), mountain quaking (seismos). Revelation's formula draws on this pattern and escalates it through four occurrences.

Notes: The smoke ascending 'as the smoke of a furnace' (19:18) directly parallels Rev 9:2 where smoke rises from the abyss 'as the smoke of a great furnace' (hos kapnos kaminou megales). The trumpet 'waxing louder and louder' is unique to Sinai and echoes in Rev 8:6-11:19's trumpet intensification.

OT source for kingdom announcement β€” everlasting dominion given to Son of Man

And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.

Context: Rev 11:15's kingdom announcement echoes Dan 7:14. Both describe a transfer of sovereignty β€” in Daniel from the beasts/empires to the Son of Man, in Revelation from the world-kingdom to God and Christ.

Notes: Dan 7:14 uses three key terms: sholtan (dominion), yeqar (glory), malku (kingdom) β€” all given to the Son of Man. Rev 11:15 uses basileia (kingdom) and basileuo (to reign). The 'all people, nations, and languages' of Dan 7:14 appears in Rev 10:11 as 'peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.'

OT source for kingdom given to saints of the Most High

And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom [is] an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

Context: The complementary kingdom transfer: Dan 7:14 gives the kingdom to the Son of Man, Dan 7:27 gives it to the saints. Rev 11:18's 'give reward to thy servants the prophets and saints' echoes this dual-recipient theme.

Notes: The 'everlasting kingdom' (malkuth alam) matches Rev 11:15's eis tous aionas ton aionon (unto the ages of the ages).

Seal interlude for structural comparison β€” between 6th and 7th seals

And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: [and there were] sealed an hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Juda [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Aser [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zabulon [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph [were] sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin [were] sealed twelve thousand. After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and [about] the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Context: SP043 documents the expanding interlude pattern: seal interlude = 17 verses, trumpet interlude = 25 verses (~47% longer). Both answer a preceding judgment question (6:17 'who shall be able to stand?' / 9:4's implicit 'who is protected from the woe-trumpets?'). Both have two-part internal structure.

Notes: Rev 7:3 'sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads' uses sphragis/sphragizo β€” the same sealing language referenced at Rev 9:4 ('those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads'), supporting the structural connection between the seal interlude and the woe trumpets.

Earth-dweller formula β€” katoikountas epi tes ges (1 of 5)

Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Context: First occurrence of the earth-dweller formula (tous katoikountas epi tes ges) as a technical term for the ungodly. The hour of temptation targets them specifically.

Notes: katoikeo (G2730) = to dwell, settle, inhabit. In Revelation, this becomes a technical designation for those allied with the world-system against God.

Earth-dweller formula β€” altar cry context (2 of 5)

And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

Context: Second occurrence of the earth-dweller formula. The altar cry targets those dwelling on the earth as the oppressors of God's people. SP037 altar vindication arc: this is the passive/initial stage.

Notes: The altar cry begins the vindication arc that climaxes at Rev 19:2.

Earth-dweller formula β€” earth-dwellers rejoice over witnesses (3 of 5)

And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

Context: Third occurrence of the earth-dweller formula, used TWICE in this verse. The earth-dwellers celebrate the death of the two witnesses β€” identifying them as enemies of God's prophets.

Notes: The double use of katoikountes epi tes ges in one verse emphasizes the technical nature of the term.

Earth-dweller formula β€” earth-dwellers worship the beast (4 of 5)

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Context: Fourth occurrence: earth-dwellers worship the beast. Their names are NOT in the book of life β€” confirming the formula designates the ungodly, not merely earth's inhabitants generally.

Notes: The earth-dwellers are explicitly identified as those whose names are absent from the book of life.

Earth-dweller formula β€” earth-dwellers wonder at beast, abyss mention (5 of 5)

The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Context: Fifth occurrence: earth-dwellers wonder at the beast ascending from the abyss. Also links the abyss vocabulary chain (9:1, 9:11, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1-3).

Notes: The abyss vocabulary chain is complete: opened (9:1-2), locust-king's domain (9:11), beast's origin (11:7, 17:8), Satan's prison (20:1-3).

Abyss vocabulary chain endpoint β€” angel with key, Satan bound

And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Context: The abyss vocabulary chain endpoint. The key (kleis G2807) of the abyss appears at both 9:1 (given to the fallen star) and 20:1 (held by a descending angel). The abyss functions as both a source of demonic power (9:1-11) and a prison for Satan (20:1-3).

Notes: The dual function of the abyss β€” source and prison β€” is structurally significant. G12 (abyssos) occurs 7 times in Revelation: 9:1, 9:2, 9:11, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1, 20:3.

OT parallel for 'nations were angry' β€” why do the nations rage

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, [saying],

Context: OT background for orgisthesan (Rev 11:18). The Psalm 2 pattern: nations rage β†’ God's wrath β†’ God's king installed on Zion. Rev 11:15-18 follows the same sequence: nations angry β†’ wrath came β†’ kingdom transferred.

Notes: LXX Psa 2:1: hina ti ephryaxan ethne β€” 'why did the nations rage.' Rev 11:18: ta ethne orgisthesan β€” 'the nations were angry.' The vocabulary differs (phryasso vs. orgizo) but the conceptual frame is identical.

OT parallel for everlasting kingdom set up by God

And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, [but] it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Context: Dan 2:44 declares that God's kingdom will destroy all earthly kingdoms and stand forever β€” the OT template for Rev 11:15's kingdom transfer declaration.

Notes: The phrase 'God of heaven' (Elah shemayya) appears in Rev 11:13 where survivors 'gave glory to the God of heaven' β€” a verbal link.

Aorist elthen β€” 'the great day of his wrath IS COME'

For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Context: TM083: elthen (V-2AAI-3S, aorist of erchomai G2064) = 'is come/has come' β€” same aorist form as Rev 11:18 (elthen he orge sou). Both declare wrath as arrived at sequence climaxes (6th seal / 7th trumpet).

Notes: The parallel between Rev 6:17 and 11:18 strengthens the structural correspondence between seals and trumpets.

Sealed biblion β€” contrast with open biblaridion of Rev 10:2

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

Context: The biblion (G975) of Rev 5:1 is sealed with seven seals. TM078 distinguishes it from biblaridion (G974) of Rev 10:2 which is eneogmenon (permanently opened). Different word, different state, different handler.

Notes: The Bauckham thesis claims biblaridion = biblion (diminutives lost force). Counter-evidence: the heavenly voice uses biblion (10:8) while John uses biblaridion (10:2,9,10) β€” if they were identical, why switch? Also, the Rev 5 scroll is sealed (katesphragismenon); the Rev 10 scroll is open (eneogmenon).

Candlestick = churches β€” interpretive key for lampstand imagery

The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Context: Rev 1:20 explicitly identifies candlesticks (lychniai G3087) as churches. This provides an internal interpretive key for Rev 11:4 where the two witnesses are called 'two candlesticks.'

Notes: If lychniai = churches in Rev 1:20, then the two lychniai of Rev 11:4 could represent the witnessing church. However, Rev 11:4 also identifies them as elaia (olive trees), which Zech 4:14 identifies as 'anointed ones' β€” a different symbol.

1260-day period repeated β€” woman fed in wilderness

And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days.

Context: Third occurrence of the 1260-day period (TM079). The days formulation is associated with divine protection (12:6, 11:3).

Notes: 1260 days in 12:6 parallels 11:3 (witnesses prophesy) β€” both describe God's people under divine protection during persecution.

Time, times, half a time β€” Aramaic formulation in Greek

And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Context: Fourth occurrence of the 3.5-year period (TM079), using Daniel's Aramaic formulation (Dan 7:25, 12:7) transposed into Greek: kairon kai kairous kai hemisy kairou.

Notes: kairos (G2540) here = a set time/season, equivalent to Aramaic iddan. The mathematical equivalence: time (1) + times (2) + half a time (0.5) = 3.5 years = 42 months = 1260 days.

42 months β€” beast given authority for same period

And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months.

Context: Fifth occurrence of the 3.5-year period (TM079). The months formulation is associated with oppression/authority (11:2 Gentiles tread, 13:5 beast exercises power). Both use 42 months.

Notes: The contextual alternation: months for oppression (11:2, 13:5), days for witness/protection (11:3, 12:6), Aramaic formulation for the encompassing period (Dan 7:25, 12:7, Rev 12:14).

Time, times, dividing of time β€” OT source for 3.5-year persecution period

And he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Context: Sixth occurrence of the 3.5-year period (TM079). The Aramaic iddan ve-iddanin u-pelag iddan = time, times, dividing of time. Saints given into the little horn's hand for this duration.

Notes: Dan 7:25 provides the persecution context for the 3.5-year period: saints given into the little horn's power. This matches Rev 11:7 where the beast overcomes and kills the witnesses.

Time, times, half a time β€” oath scene duration declaration

And I heard the man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that [it shall be] for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these [things] shall be finished.

Context: Seventh occurrence of the 3.5-year period (TM079). VP090 oath-scene source: the man clothed in linen (Daniel's angelic figure) stands upon waters, raises hands, swears by the eternal God, and declares a time-period. Rev 10:5-6 replicates the scene but INVERTS the content.

Notes: Dan 12:7 declares a duration; Rev 10:6 declares that duration's END. The inversion is central to the sealed-to-unsealed thesis.

One-quarter fraction in seals β€” fraction escalation baseline

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Context: SP036 (Strong) fraction escalation: 1/4 (seals, Rev 6:8), 1/3 (trumpets, Rev 8:7-12), total (bowls, Rev 16). Hoskins calls this an 'interlocking structure' uniting all 21 plagues.

Notes: to tetarton tes ges (the fourth part of the earth). The fraction decreases as the denominator decreases (4 β†’ 3 β†’ 1), meaning the scope of judgment INCREASES.

Bowls 1-6 for trumpet-bowl parallel comparison

And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and [upon] them which worshipped his image. And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead [man]: and every living soul died in the sea. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous [are] thy judgments. And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Context: SP055 (Strong) trumpet-bowl target correspondence: earth/earth, sea/sea, rivers/rivers, sun/sun β€” same domains in same order. But effects diverge: trumpet fractions (one-third) vs. bowl totality; trumpet 4 darkens sun, bowl 4 empowers sun to scorch. Rev 16:9,11 repeat ou metanoesan (failed repentance), confirming the impenitence pattern from 9:20-21.

Notes: Rev 16:7 has the altar speaking (ekousa tou thysiasteriou legontos) β€” the altar vindication arc's penultimate stage. Rev 16:5 has the abbreviated divine title (ho on kai ho en, ho Hosios) β€” missing ho erchomenos, as at Rev 11:17.

Altar vindication arc resolved β€” avenged blood of servants

For true and righteous [are] his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

Context: SP037 altar vindication arc terminus: exedikesen (aorist of ekdikeo G1556) = 'hath avenged.' The arc: ekdikeis (present, 6:10) β†’ exedikesen (aorist, 19:2). Present request becomes completed action.

Notes: The tense shift from present (6:10 'dost thou not avenge?') to aorist (19:2 'hath avenged') tracks the arc's resolution.

Wrath culmination β€” tou thymou tes orges combining both wrath words

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Context: SP045 orge-thymos wrath continuum climax: tou thymou tes orges tou Theou tou Pantokratoros β€” 'the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.' Both wrath words combined at the eschatological culmination.

Notes: Also at Rev 16:19: tou oinou tou thymou tes orges autou β€” the fierceness of his wrath. The combination of thymos (burning fury) + orge (settled judgment) at the climax confirms SP045's complementary-distribution thesis.

OT source for Elijah shutting heaven β€” 3.5-year drought

And Elijah the Tishbite, [who was] of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, [As] the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Context: AN039 (Strong, 4 links) OT source for Rev 11:6 'power to shut heaven.' James 5:17 specifies the drought lasted 3 years and 6 months = 1260 days. Elijah's drought = witnesses' prophesying period.

Notes: The phrase 'before whom I stand' parallels Rev 11:4 'standing before the God of the earth.'

OT source for fire consuming enemies β€” Elijah's fire from heaven

And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I [be] a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty. Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly. And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I [be] a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

Context: AN039 OT source for Rev 11:5 'fire proceedeth out of their mouth.' But Revelation modifies: Elijah calls fire FROM HEAVEN; the witnesses' fire comes FROM THEIR MOUTH. Jer 5:14 ('I will make my words in thy mouth fire') explains the modification β€” the fire IS the prophetic word.

Notes: The modification from fire-from-heaven to fire-from-mouth intensifies the identification with prophetic speech.

OT source for water turned to blood β€” Moses plague

Thus saith the LORD, In this thou shalt know that I [am] the LORD: behold, I will smite with the rod that [is] in mine hand upon the waters which [are] in the river, and they shall be turned to blood. And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that [were] in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that [were] in the river were turned to blood.

Context: AN039 OT source for Rev 11:6 'power over waters to turn them to blood.' The Moses-plague connection reinforces the Exodus typology running through the trumpet series.

Notes: Moses + Elijah = Law + Prophets = the complete OT witness. Their powers divided between the two witnesses in Rev 11:5-6 echo the Transfiguration where Moses and Elijah appear together (Matt 17:3).

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Context: The legal foundation for TWO witnesses: testimony requires two or three witnesses to establish a fact. Rev 11:3's two witnesses fulfills this juridical principle.

Notes: Jesus affirms this principle in Matt 18:16 and John 8:17. The two-witness requirement gives the witnesses' testimony legal weight.

Day of Atonement β€” Aaron must not enter at all times

And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy [place] within the vail before the mercy seat, which [is] upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

Context: AN040 (Probable) OT source for Rev 11:19 ark visibility. The ark in the Most Holy Place was normally concealed behind the veil; it was accessible only on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).

Notes: When Rev 11:19 shows the ark visible in the heavenly temple, it evokes the Day of Atonement β€” the one occasion when the most sacred precinct was entered.

Day of Atonement β€” no man in tabernacle during atonement

And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy [place], until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

Context: VP097 (Moderate, 3 links) OT source for Rev 15:8 'no man was able to enter into the temple.' The exclusion from the sanctuary during atonement-making parallels the exclusion during the bowl-pouring.

Notes: Lev 16:17 exclusion during atonement β†’ Rev 15:8 exclusion during bowl-pouring. This supports reading the bowls as a Day of Atonement execution phase.

God's word as fire in mouth β€” prophetic fire interpretation

Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Context: Explains the modification from 2 Kings 1 (fire from heaven) to Rev 11:5 (fire from mouth). The fire IS the prophetic word β€” God's words become fire in the prophet's mouth.

Notes: This passage provides the interpretive key for Rev 11:5: the witnesses' fire is the prophetic word consuming opponents.

Moses and Elijah named together β€” law and prophets as complete OT witness

Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, [with] the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

Context: The OT closes by naming Moses (law) and Elijah (prophets) together, establishing them as the complete embodiment of OT revelation. Rev 11:5-6 distributes their powers between the two witnesses.

Notes: Malachi 4:4-5 is the last OT chapter, placing Moses and Elijah at the conclusion of the OT canon. The Transfiguration (Matt 17:3) confirms this pairing.

Raz-mysterion chain β€” God reveals secrets in the latter days

But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;

Context: Dan 2:28 uses Aramaic raz (secret/mystery) β€” the origin point for the raz-mysterion disclosure chain that reaches Rev 10:7 (to mysterion tou theou etelesthe).

Notes: The LXX translates Aramaic raz with Greek mysterion (G3466), establishing the translation bridge. Dan 2:28 β†’ Dan 2:47 β†’ Rev 10:7 traces the mystery from concealment to revelation to completion.

Song of Moses β€” sanctuary allusion, nations tremble, kingdom established

Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people [which] thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided [them] in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

Context: Exo 15:18 'The LORD shall reign for ever and ever' is the earliest OT kingdom-reign declaration, echoed in Rev 11:15 'he shall reign for ever and ever.' Rev 15:3 explicitly references 'the song of Moses.'

Notes: YHWH yimlok le-olam va-ed (Exo 15:18) β†’ basileusei eis tous aionas ton aionon (Rev 11:15). The identical concept in Hebrew and Greek brackets the biblical canon.

Two witnesses identity β€” olive trees and candlesticks

  • Houtoi (G3778) β€” D-NPM β€” Nom Pl M
  • eisin (G1510) β€” V-PAI-3P β€” Pres Act Ind Pl thirdPers
  • elaiai (G1636) β€” N-NPF β€” Nom Pl F
  • lychniai (G3087) β€” N-NPF β€” Nom Pl F
  • hestotes. (G2476) β€” V-RAP-NPM β€” Perf Act Ptcp Nom Pl M

Notes: Direct allusion to Zech 4:3,11-14 (two olive trees beside the lampstand). The identity statement uses eisin (present indicative) β€” declarative identification, same construction as Rev 1:20.
