Question

How does sanctuary/temple typology run through the entire book of Revelation? Trace every sanctuary element, identify its OT compartment (Exod 25-40), and determine whether the progression outer court → Holy Place → Most Holy Place correlates with the judgment sequences. How does DOA typology (Lev 16) function as a structural marker?

Rev 4:2-3

And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

Rev 4:5

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Rev 4:6

And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

Rev 5:8

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

Rev 6:9

And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Rev 7:15

Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

Rev 8:1-2

And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

Rev 8:3-5

And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which is before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

Rev 9:13

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God:

Rev 11:1-2

And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

Rev 11:15-19

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Rev 14:15-18

And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped. And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Rev 15:1-4

And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

Rev 15:5-8

And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

Rev 16:1

And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

Rev 16:7

And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

Rev 16:17-21

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the winepress of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there was great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and every man blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

Rev 21:1-4

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Rev 21:16

And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

Rev 21:22

And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

Rev 22:1-2

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Rev 22:3-5

And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Rev 12:12

Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Rev 13:6

And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

Lev 16:2

And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

Lev 16:12-13

And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail: And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony; that he die not.

Lev 16:14-16

And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the bullock's blood, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

Exod 25:10-22

And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about. ... And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

Exod 25:31-40

And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side. ... And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. ... And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

Exod 27:1-8

And thou shalt make an altar of shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits. And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass. ... And thou shalt make the staves for the altar, staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with brass. And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it.

Exod 30:1-10

And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it. A cubit shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits shall be the height thereof: the horns thereof shall be of the same. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about. ... And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee. ... And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.

Heb 9:1-5

Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy seat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Heb 9:7

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

1 Kgs 6:19-20

And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD. And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.

John 1:14

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Rev 1:12-13

And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

Rev 6:12-17

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Seven Golden Lampstands — Christ among Holy Place Furniture

And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [one] like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

Context: Opening vision of Revelation; John turns to see the speaker and encounters Christ ministering among seven golden lampstands. Priestly garment (podērē + golden girdle) identifies Christ as the heavenly high priest.

Notes: ἑπτὰ λυχνίας χρυσᾶς (seven golden lampstands, G3087) — the OT menorah placed in the Holy Place (Exod 25:31-40; 26:35). Christ as priest in the midst of the lampstands establishes the HP as Revelation's opening sanctuary setting. Paulien's septet-introduction pattern: lampstand scene (1:12-20) precedes the seven letters just as throne room (4-5) precedes the seals.

Lampstand Identification — Seven Churches

The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Context: Christ interprets the opening vision: the seven stars = angels of the seven churches; the seven lampstands = the seven churches themselves.

Notes: αἱ ἑπτὰ λυχνίαι αἱ ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαι εἰσίν — lampstands = churches (explicit equation). The churches occupy the position of the Holy Place lampstand in the heavenly sanctuary; their lamp is removable (Rev 2:5 threat). G3087 lychnia: 6 Revelation occurrences, all in the lampstand/church context.

Naos Occurrence — Overcomer as Pillar

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [which is] new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and [I will write upon him] my new name.

Context: Letter to Philadelphia; overcomer promise at letter 6 of 7. The promise is permanent installation as a structural element of the heavenly naos.

Notes: στῦλον ἐν τῷ ναῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ μου — pillar in the naos of God. Permanent stability: he shall go no more out (οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃ ἔτι). Three names inscribed: God's name, New Jerusalem's name, Christ's new name. Context does not specify HP vs MHP — naos here = inner sanctuary in general.

Seven Lamps (HP) and Sea of Glass (OC) — All-Compartment Throne Scene

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne [there was] a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

Context: Throne room vision of Rev 4; the establishing scene before the seal series begins. All major sanctuary compartments are present simultaneously.

Notes: ἑπτὰ λαμπάδες πυρὸς καιόμεναι (seven torches of fire = seven Spirits, G2985 lampas not G3087 lychnia — distinct term). θάλασσα ὑαλίνη ὁμοία κρυστάλλῳ (sea of glass like crystal) = bronze laver (Exod 30:18-21; 1 Kgs 7:23-26 outer court placement). Theophany: 3-element (lightning + voices + thunder) = IC077 Level 1. This establishing scene conflates all compartments before sequential progression begins at 6:9.

Throne Room Establishing Scene

After this I looked, and, behold, a door [was] opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard [was] as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and [there was] a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne [were] four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

Context: Opening of the throne room vision in Rev 4; John is summoned through the open door (4:1) to see the heavenly court before the seals are opened.

Notes: θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ (door opened in heaven) — compare 11:19 (naos opened) and 15:5 (naos of testimony opened): the door/opening vocabulary marks access to progressive compartments. Twenty-four elders = priestly courses (1 Chr 24); white raiment = priestly garb. Rainbow (Rev 4:3) echoes Ezek 1:28.

Golden Bowls of Incense — Vessel Transformation Origin

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

Context: The Lamb receives the sealed scroll; the four living creatures and twenty-four elders fall in worship holding harps and golden bowls.

Notes: φιάλας χρυσᾶς γεμούσας θυμιαμάτων (golden bowls full of incense, G5357 phiale + G2368 thymiama) = prayers of saints. This is the intercession phase of the vessel transformation arc. The same grammatical construction recurs at Rev 15:7 with wrath (θυμοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ) replacing incense — identical φιάλας χρυσᾶς γεμούσας + genitive content. HP incense altar function.

Souls Under the Bronze Altar — Outer Court

And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Context: Fifth seal opened; John sees martyred souls beneath the altar crying for vindication.

Notes: ὑποκάτω τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου (G5270 hypokatō + G2379 thysiastērion, genitive) — souls UNDER the altar; no χρυσοῦν qualifier = outer court bronze altar (Exod 27:1-8). Blood of sin offering poured at base of bronze altar (Lev 4:7) — martyrs' blood = sacrifice at OC altar. Initiates the altar vindication arc: 6:10 (ekdikeis, present) → 16:7 (ekdikeo, altar speaks) → 19:2 (exedikēsen, aorist, resolved).

Naos Occurrence — Priestly Service Before the Throne

Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

Context: The great multitude who came out of the great tribulation are described in their heavenly state before the throne.

Notes: λατρεύουσιν αὐτῷ ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτοῦ (serve him day and night in his naos). σκηνώσει ἐπ' αὐτούς (G4637 skēnoō, future active) — God will tabernacle over them. The perpetual day-and-night service before the throne suggests the naos = inner sanctuary in general (not MHP exclusively, since MHP access was once-yearly in the earthly type). Context test for Bohr's claim: this is more naturally inner sanctuary than MHP-exclusive.

Golden Altar of Incense — Holy Place; DOA Typology

And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer [it] with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, [which came] with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast [it] into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

Context: Seventh seal opened with half-hour silence; incense offering at the golden altar precedes the trumpet series.

Notes: Two epi constructions: (1) ἐστάθη ἐπὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου [gen] = stood at the altar (positional); (2) ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ χρυσοῦν [acc] = motion onto the golden altar (directional). λιβανωτὸν χρυσοῦν (golden censer, G3031) — only 2 NT occurrences, both in Rev 8. DOA parallel: Lev 16:12-13 (censer with coals from altar + incense → before LORD). Theophany at v.5: 4-element (IC077 Level 2). Censer reversal: incense ascending (8:3-4) → fire cast to earth (8:5).

Triple Genitive — Explicit HP Golden Altar Identification

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

Context: Sixth trumpet; a voice from the horns of the golden altar releases the four angels bound at the Euphrates.

Notes: Triple genitive chain: τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ χρυσοῦ τοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ (the altar + the golden one + the before-God one). Most explicit HP golden altar identification in Revelation. Four horns = incense altar (Exod 30:3; Lev 16:18). Voice from the horns = altar speaks (cf. Rev 16:7). HP identification confirmed: chrysou + enopion tou Theou + four horns = triple qualifier.

Three Sanctuary Zones Named — Naos Measured, Outer Court Excluded

And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months.

Context: Between the sixth and seventh trumpets; John is given a measuring reed to measure three zones of the sanctuary.

Notes: Three zones: (1) τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ (naos, G3485, acc) — inner sanctuary measured; (2) τὸ θυσιαστήριον (altar, G2379, acc) — measured; (3) τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας ἐν αὐτῷ — worshippers. τὴν αὐλὴν τὴν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ναοῦ (G833 aulē, court outside the naos) — explicitly excluded. This is the only passage naming all three zones in sequence. aulē = outer court (Exod 27:9); its exclusion confirms naos ≠ outer court.

Naos Opened — Ark Seen — MHP Access (Janus Verse)

And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Context: Seventh trumpet climax; after the kingdom announcement (11:15-18), the naos is opened and the ark is revealed.

Notes: ἠνοίγη ὁ ναὸς (aor pass, agentless divine passive) + ὤφθη ἡ κιβωτός (aor pass, agentless) — both passives: the naos opened itself (divinely), the ark was seen. κιβωτὸς τῆς διαθήκης (G2787, only Revelation occurrence) = MHP furniture (Exod 26:34; Heb 9:4). Theophany: 5-element (lightning + voices + thunder + earthquake + great hail) = IC077 Level 3. Janus verse: closes the trumpet sequence, opens toward the MHP bowl prelude (15:5).

Naos Occurrence — Beast Blasphemes God's Sanctuary

And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

Context: The beast from the sea opens his mouth in blasphemy; the target is God himself, his naos/skēnē, and the heavenly inhabitants.

Notes: τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ σκηνοῦντας — beast blasphemes God's skēnē (G4633) and those skēnoō-ing (G4637, 4th use) in heaven. Some MSS read 'his name and his naos, even his tabernacle' — textual variant where naos and skēnē are coordinated terms. Anti-sanctuary polemic as mark of the beast's character; the sanctuary is the target precisely because it is the seat of divine authority.

Angel from the Naos — First Harvest Command

And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

Context: First harvest scene; an angel exits the naos to command the harvest of the earth.

Notes: ἐκ τοῦ ναοῦ (out of the naos) — the harvest command originates inside the inner sanctuary. Naos as the source of judicial/harvest commands. No compartment qualifier given; the naos here = command center from which divine judgment issues. Cf. Rev 16:1 (voice from naos commands bowl pouring).

Angel from the Naos — Second Harvest (Vintage)

And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

Context: Second harvest scene (vintage/wrath); another angel exits the naos in heaven carrying a sharp sickle for the vine harvest.

Notes: ἐκ τοῦ ναοῦ τοῦ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ — from the naos which is in heaven (same articulated phrase as 11:19). The vine harvest = wrath trampling (14:19-20). Two consecutive angels exit the naos (14:15 and 14:17), establishing the naos as the origin of both grain harvest and vintage judgment commands.

Angel from the Altar — Fire Authority (Outer Court)

And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Context: Third angel in the harvest sequence; this angel comes from the altar (thysiastērion) and has authority over fire.

Notes: ἐκ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου — from the thysiastērion (no chrysoun qualifier). ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ τοῦ πυρός (authority over fire) = bronze altar identification (fire of burnt offering, not incense altar). Consistent with Rev 8:5 (fire from the same altar cast to earth). No golden qualifier = outer court bronze altar, not HP golden altar.

Sea of Glass Mingled with Fire — Laver Transformation

And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, [and] over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

Context: Before the bowl series; the overcomers stand on the sea of glass (now mingled with fire) holding harps of God.

Notes: θάλασσα ὑαλίνη μεμιγμένη πυρί (sea of glass mingled with fire, G5193 hualinos again) — the same sea of Rev 4:6 but now transformed. Fire added = judgment dimension (fire of the altar, 8:5?). Overcomers stand on the sea victorious — echoes Exod 15:1 (Moses and Israel sing on the far shore). The laver is now a place of triumph. G5193 hualinos: only 3 NT occurrences — Rev 4:6 and here (plus Rev 21:18 city like glass).

Five-Indicator DOA Cluster — Naos of Testimony Opened, Access Excluded

And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

Context: Bowl series prelude; the naos is opened and the seven bowl-angels emerge before the naos is sealed shut with smoke.

ἄχρι τελεσθῶσιν (access exclusion with temporal bound, 15:8) = Lev 16:17.

Voice from the Naos Commands the Bowl Angels

And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

Context: Opening of the bowl series; a great voice from the naos commands the seven bowl angels.

Notes: φωνῆς μεγάλης ἐκ τοῦ ναοῦ — great voice from naos. The bowl-judgment series is commanded from within the inner sanctuary. The naos access exclusion (15:8) is in force while the bowls are poured — the sanctuary is sealed but still operative as the command center. Note: the bowls come FROM inside the naos that no man can enter — God himself issues the command.

Altar Vindication Arc — Middle Point

And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous [are] thy judgments.

Context: Fourth bowl; a voice from the altar affirms the righteousness of God's judgments.

Notes: τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου λέγοντος (the altar speaking, gen abs construction) — altar vindication arc middle point. No chrysoun qualifier = outer court bronze altar (consistent with 6:9 martyrdom altar). The altar that received the martyrs' blood (6:9) now affirms the vindication is righteous. Arc: 6:10 (ekdikeis, present query) → 16:7 (altar affirms) → 19:2 (exedikēsen, aorist, complete).

Seventh Bowl — Gegonen from the Naos

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

Context: Seventh bowl; the completion declaration (gegonen) comes from the naos and from the throne simultaneously.

Notes: Γέγονεν (V-RAI-3S, perfect active) = 'It is done/It has come to pass.' Voice ἐκ τοῦ ναοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ θρόνου — from the naos and from the throne (naos/throne conflation). This is the first of three completion declarations: 16:17 (gegonen) → 21:5 (idou kaina) → 21:6 (gegonan, plural). DOA completion: the 'until the plagues are fulfilled' temporal bound (15:8) is now met. Theophany at 16:18-21: 5+ elements = IC077 Level 4 (amplified).

Altar Vindication Arc Resolved — Exedikēsen

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous [are] his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

Context: After Babylon's fall; heaven erupts in hallelujah, affirming God's righteous judgment and the avenging of the martyrs' blood.

Notes: ἐξεδίκησεν τὸ αἷμα τῶν δούλων αὐτοῦ ἐκ χειρὸς αὐτῆς (aorist = he has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand). Altar vindication arc completed: 6:9 (souls under altar cry 'how long?') → 6:10 (ekdikeis, present) → 16:7 (altar affirms) → 19:2 (exedikēsen, aorist, done). The martyrs beneath the OC bronze altar (6:9) receive their vindication here.

Tabernacle of God with Men — Skēnē Arc Climax

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.

Context: New Jerusalem descends; the great voice from heaven announces the ultimate fulfillment of Exod 25:8's purpose.

Notes: ἡ σκηνὴ τοῦ Θεοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων + σκηνώσει μετ' αὐτῶν (G4637 skēnoō, future active, climactic 5th NT use). Exod 25:8 → Rev 21:3 arc: 'let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them' now fulfilled without a mediated structure. Compare Ezek 37:27 (my tabernacle shall be with them) and Lev 26:11-12 (I will set my tabernacle among you). No longer tent/tabernacle as temporary structure — God himself dwells directly.

New Jerusalem as Perfect Cube — Eschatological Most Holy Place

And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

Context: John sees the New Jerusalem measured; the city is revealed to be a perfect cube at cosmic scale.

Notes: τετράγωνος κεῖται (G5068, NT hapax, foursquare) + τὸ μῆκος καὶ τὸ πλάτος καὶ τὸ ὕψος αὐτῆς ἴσα ἐστίν (length=breadth=height=equal, all three dimensions equal = cube). 1 Kgs 6:20: MHP = 20×20×20 cubits = perfect cube. New Jerusalem = cosmic-scale MHP. G5068 LXX background: translates H7251 rābaʿ exclusively in sanctuary contexts.

Naon Ouk Eidon — No Naos Seen; God and Lamb ARE the Naos

And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

Context: New Jerusalem established; John reports the absence of a separate naos building and gives the theological reason.

Notes: ναὸν οὐκ εἶδον (fronted accusative, negated vision — not negated existence) + ναὸς αὐτῆς ἐστιν ὁ Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὁ Παντοκράτωρ καὶ τὸ Ἀρνίον (anarthrous PN before copula — qualitative: God possesses the nature/character of the naos). Not abolition but transformation: God IS the sanctuary. The entire cube-city is the MHP because God fills it — Exod 25:8 purpose fully achieved.

River of Life from the Throne — Eden-Sanctuary Typology

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, [was there] the tree of life, which bare twelve [manner of] fruits, [and] yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree [were] for the healing of the nations.

Context: After the New Jerusalem is established; an angel shows John the river of life flowing from the throne through the city.

Notes: ποταμὸν ὕδατος ζωῆς (river of living water) proceeding from the throne = Ezek 47:1-12 (river from beneath the sanctuary threshold). Tree of life (ξύλον ζωῆς) = Gen 2:9 (Eden garden). The New Jerusalem recapitulates Eden-as-sanctuary: the river flows outward from the innermost divine presence (throne = MHP) just as Ezek 47's river flows from the sanctuary. 12 fruits, one per month = perpetual supply; leaves for healing = universal restoration.

Ark Design and Dwelling Purpose Statement

And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, [after] the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make [it]. And they shall make an ark [of] shittim wood: two cubits and a half [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about. ... And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which [are] upon the ark of the testimony, of all [things] which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

Context: God instructs Moses on the sanctuary design; the purpose statement (v.8) and the ark design (vv.10-22) anchor the entire sanctuary typology.

Notes: v.8: 'let them make me a sanctuary (miqdash, H4720) that I may dwell (shakan, H7931) among them' — the theological purpose of the entire system. v.22: God speaks from above the mercy seat between the cherubim — the ark is the divine speech-point. Exod 25:8 → Rev 21:3 (God will dwell with men) → Rev 21:22 (God IS the sanctuary) = the overarching theological arc of the entire study.

Lampstand/Menorah Design — Holy Place Furniture

And thou shalt make a candlestick [of] pure gold: [of] beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side: ... And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. ... And look that thou make [them] after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

Context: Exodus 25 blueprint for the golden lampstand; it is explicitly placed in the Holy Place (Exod 26:35; 40:24-25).

Notes: מְנוֹרָה (menōrāh, H4501) of pure gold, seven-branched. Position: Holy Place (Exod 26:35). Seven lamps (sheba' nerōt). Paralleled in Revelation at 1:12-13 (seven golden lychnia) and 4:5 (seven lampas/torches before throne). G3087 lychnia is the LXX translation of H4501 (PMI 32.20 from library entry). The lampstand is the defining HP furniture — its presence marks the HP compartment.

Bronze Altar — Outer Court Construction Blueprint

And thou shalt make an altar [of] shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof [shall be] three cubits. And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass. ... And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves [of] shittim wood, and overlay them with brass. And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it. Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall they make [it].

Context: Exodus 27 blueprint for the bronze altar of burnt offering; positioned in the outer court (Exod 40:29).

Notes: Bronze (copper) overlay — distinguishes from HP golden incense altar. 5×5×3 cubits. Four horns. Position: outer court (Exod 40:29 — place it in front of the entrance to the tabernacle). Paralleled in Revelation at 6:9 (souls under thysiastērion, no chrysoun) and 16:7 (altar speaks). The absence of gold = the primary marker distinguishing OC bronze altar from HP golden altar in Revelation's two-altar syntax.

Golden Altar of Incense — Holy Place Construction Blueprint

And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: [of] shittim wood shalt thou make it. A cubit [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits [shall be] the height thereof: the horns thereof [shall be] of the same. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about. ... And thou shalt put it before the vail that [is] by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that [is] over the testimony, where I will meet with thee. ... And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.

Context: Exodus 30 blueprint for the golden incense altar; positioned before the veil, adjacent to the ark.

Notes: Pure gold overlay — the χρυσοῦν qualifier in Revelation (8:3, 9:13) echoes this golden designation. 1×1×2 cubits. Four horns. Position: before the veil, before the mercy seat (most HP-adjacent HP element, bordering MHP). Morning and evening burning. Paralleled in Revelation at 8:3 (θυσιαστήριον τὸ χρυσοῦν) and 9:13 (τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ χρυσοῦ τοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ).

Bronze Laver — Outer Court Washing Station

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Thou shalt also make a laver [of] brass, and his foot [also of] brass, to wash [withal]: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat: When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD: So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, [even] to him and to his seed throughout their generations.

Context: Exodus 30 blueprint for the bronze laver; positioned between the tabernacle and the altar in the outer court.

Notes: Bronze laver positioned 'between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar' = outer court. Washing prerequisite for priestly service. Paralleled in Revelation at 4:6 (sea of glass = the transformed laver before the throne) and 15:2 (sea of glass mingled with fire). OT placement: outer court (Exod 40:7, 30; 1 Kgs 7:23-26 confirms Solomon's bronze sea was in outer court). Revelation may have elevated the laver to the divine throne context.

No Entry to MHP Except DOA — Access Restriction

And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy [place] within the vail before the mercy seat, which [is] upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

Context: Leviticus 16 DOA instructions; the primary access restriction for the Most Holy Place.

Notes: בְּכָל-עֵת אֶל-הַקֹּדֶשׁ (not at all times into the holy place = not whenever he wishes into the MHP). כִּי בֶּעָנָן אֵרָאֶה עַל-הַכַּפֹּרֶת (for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat) — divine presence in the MHP makes unrestricted access fatal. This restriction is the OT foundation for Rev 15:8 (no man able to enter the naos). Annual DOA = the one exception to the access restriction.

DOA Censer Act — Incense Cloud on Mercy Seat

And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring [it] within the vail: And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that [is] upon the testimony, that he die not:

Context: Leviticus 16 DOA ritual; the high priest takes a censer with coals from the altar and incense into the MHP to create a protective smoke cloud.

Notes: מַחְתָּה (machtāh, censer) with גַּחֲלֵי-אֵשׁ (burning coals) from הַמִּזְבֵּחַ (the altar). The incense cloud (עֲנַן הַקְּטֹרֶת) covers the mercy seat. Direct parallel to Rev 8:3-5 (libanotos with incense + coals, before God). The smoke fills the MHP protectively so the high priest does not see God face-to-face and die. Rev 8:4 (smoke ascending upward) parallels the incense cloud ascending to cover the mercy seat.

No Man in the Tabernacle During MHP Atonement

And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy [place], until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

Context: Leviticus 16 DOA instruction; the exclusion clause during the high priest's MHP entry.

Notes: וְכָל-אָדָם לֹא-יִהְיֶה בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד (no man shall be in the tent of meeting) בְּבֹאוֹ לְכַפֵּר (when he goes in to make atonement) עַד-צֵאתוֹ (until he comes out). The exclusion lasts 'until he come out' — a temporal bound identical in structure to Rev 15:8 (ἄχρι τελεσθῶσιν αἱ ἑπτὰ πληγαί = until the seven plagues are completed). DOA indicator #4 at Rev 15:8: the access exclusion with temporal 'until' clause.

Annual DOA — Affliction of Souls, Atonement Made

[And this] shall be a statute for ever unto you: [that] in the seventh month, on the tenth [day] of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, [whether it be] one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: For on that day shall [the priest] make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, [that] ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

Context: Leviticus 16 conclusion; the annual DOA observance is established as a perpetual statute.

Notes: Seventh month, tenth day = Day of Atonement. עִנּוּי נְפָשׁוֹת (afflicting of souls). Annual cycle: one day per year (Heb 9:7). Clean from all sins = complete annual atonement. The 'once a year' limitation (Heb 9:7) is the OT basis for the eschatological finality of the bowl-series DOA typology in Revelation — when the antitypical DOA is complete, all sin is dealt with definitively.

Most Holy Place as Perfect Cube — OT Basis for Rev 21:16

And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD. And the oracle in the forepart [was] twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and [so] covered the altar [which was of] cedar.

Context: Solomon's temple construction; the dimensions of the Most Holy Place (debîr/oracle) are given as a perfect cube.

Notes: הַדְּבִיר (the oracle/debir = MHP) = 20×20×20 cubits — the only perfect cube in OT sanctuary architecture. Gold overlay. The ark will be placed here (1 Kgs 8:6). Rev 21:16 (New Jerusalem = 12,000 stadia on each axis, length=breadth=height=equal) replicates this cubic form at cosmic scale. G5068 tetragonos (hapax) + ἴσα ἐστίν = the exact cube marker.

NT Sanctuary Compartment Description — HP and MHP Furniture

Then verily the first [covenant] had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein [was] the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein [was] the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Context: Hebrews 9 describes the Mosaic tabernacle's compartments as the theological context for Christ's high priestly ministry.

Notes: Two-compartment structure: (1) First tabernacle (HP): candlestick (G3087 lychnia), table (G5132 trapeza), shewbread — 'which is called the sanctuary'; (2) After the second veil — Holiest of all (MHP): θυμιατήριον (G2369, golden censer/incense altar — placed here by Hebrews, cf. 1 Kgs 6:22) + ark + mercy seat + cherubim. G5132 trapeza (shewbread table) = 0 Revelation occurrences — the genuine showbread gap. Heb 9:7 confirms: high priest entered MHP 'once every year.'

HP Daily Access vs MHP Once-Yearly — Dual-Compartment Ministry

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service [of God]. But into the second [went] the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and [for] the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

Context: Hebrews 9 explains the significance of the two-compartment structure: the HP was entered daily; the MHP was entered only once per year on the DOA.

Notes: Priests go into the first tabernacle (HP) always — continuous ministry. High priest alone into the second (MHP) once every year (ἅπαξ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ). The Holy Spirit signifies: the way into the holiest was not yet open while the HP stood. This two-phase ministry (HP continuous + MHP annual) is the structural model for the compartmental progression in Revelation: seals/trumpets = HP ministry phase; bowls = MHP/DOA phase.

Veil Dividing HP from MHP — Compartmentalization

And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy [place] and the most holy. And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy [place]. And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.

Context: Exodus 26 tabernacle construction; the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place is described along with furniture placement.

Notes: The veil (pāroket, H6532) divides HP from MHP: ark behind veil (MHP), table and lampstand in front of veil (HP). The veil establishes the two-compartment structure that underlies Revelation's compartmental progression. In NT, this veil is torn at the crucifixion (Matt 27:51) — Heb 10:19-20 interprets: we now have boldness to enter the holiest 'through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.' Rev 11:19 (naos opened) corresponds to this veil being definitively removed in the antitypical sanctuary.

Cloud Fills the Tabernacle — Exclusion by Divine Presence

Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Context: Tabernacle dedication; the Shekinah glory fills the completed tabernacle, excluding even Moses.

Notes: Moses unable to enter (לֹא-יָכֹל מֹשֶׁה לָבוֹא) — the glory of God (כְּבוֹד יְהוָה) filled the tabernacle and excluded the human leader. This is the OT dedication-exclusion pattern. Rev 15:8 parallel: 'no man was able to enter the naos' because it was filled with smoke from the glory of God (ἐκ τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ). The Exod 40:34 precedent shows this exclusion happens at holy moments of divine presence intensification, not only at DOA.

Cloud Fills Solomon's Temple — Priests Cannot Minister

And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy [place], that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

Context: Dedication of Solomon's temple; the Shekinah glory fills the temple and prevents the priests from continuing their ministry.

Notes: Priests unable to stand to minister (לַעֲמֹד לְשָׁרֵת) because the glory filled the house. Same exclusion-by-presence pattern as Exod 40:34-35, now at the permanent temple. Rev 15:8 parallel: the naos filled with smoke from the glory of God → no man able to enter. The exclusion-by-presence motif (Exod 40 / 1 Kgs 8 / Rev 15:8) establishes the pattern, while Lev 16:17 establishes the DOA-specific access restriction. Both streams flow into Rev 15:8.

Bronze Sea in Solomon's Temple — Outer Court Laver Typology

And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: [it was] round all about, and his height [was] five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about. And under the brim of it round about [there were] knops compassing it, ten in a cubit, compassing the sea round about: the knops [were] cast in two rows, when it was cast. It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east: and the sea [was set] above upon them, and all their hinder parts [were] inward. And it [was] an hand breadth thick, and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies: it contained two thousand baths.

Context: Solomon's temple furnishings; the large bronze sea (yam mûsaq) is described — Solomon's equivalent of the bronze laver.

Notes: Bronze sea: 10 cubits diameter, round, on 12 oxen. Contains 2,000 baths. Outer court placement confirmed by 1 Kgs 7:39 ('he put the sea on the right side of the house eastward, over against the south'). This is the OT background for Rev 4:6 (sea of glass) and Rev 15:2 (sea of glass mingled with fire). The LXX renders this 'thalasson' (sea) — the same word Revelation uses.

House Filled with Smoke — Throne-Vision Sanctuary Exclusion

And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

Context: Isaiah's throne vision; as the seraphim cry 'Holy, holy, holy,' the temple fills with smoke.

Notes: הַבַּיִת יִמָּלֵא עָשָׁן (the house was filled with smoke) — divine-presence smoke filling the sanctuary at a moment of intense holiness (seraphic cry) before the prophet. Parallel to Rev 15:8 (naos filled with kapnos from the glory and power of God). Isaiah's vision = throne-room smoke; Rev 15:8 = judgment-completion smoke. Both associate sanctuary-filling smoke with the holiness/glory of God that excludes ordinary access.

River from the Sanctuary — Eschatological Water-of-Life Source

Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house [stood toward] the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south [side] of the altar. ... Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: [which being] brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. And it shall come to pass, [that] every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. ... And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.

Context: Ezekiel's visionary temple; the river of life flows from beneath the sanctuary threshold, growing deeper and bringing healing to everything it touches.

Notes: מִתַּחַת מִפְּתַן הַבַּיִת (from under the threshold of the house) — the river originates inside the sanctuary itself. Trees bearing fruit each month; leaves for medicine. Rev 22:1-2 parallels this directly: river of water of life from the throne, tree of life bearing 12 fruits monthly, leaves for healing. The sanctuary is the source of eschatological life — the river flows outward from the innermost divine presence.

Crystal Firmament Before the Throne — Background for Sea of Glass

And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature [was] as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. And under the firmament [were] their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. And there was a voice from the firmament that [was] over their heads, when they stood, [and] had let down their wings. And above the firmament that [was] over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne [was] the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness round about. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

Context: Ezekiel's chariot vision (merkabah); the crystal expanse (rāqîaʿ) stretches above the four living creatures, with the divine throne above it.

Notes: רָקִיעַ (rāqîaʿ, firmament/expanse) like the colour of 'נֹּרָא קֶרַח' (terrible crystal/ice). The throne sits above the firmament. Rev 4:6 (sea of glass before the throne, like crystal) may draw on both the OT laver/sea tradition (Exod 30:18; 1 Kgs 7:23) and this Ezekiel crystal expanse. The four living creatures of Rev 4:6-8 echo Ezekiel's four living creatures. Ezek 1:28 rainbow echoes Rev 4:3.

Lampstand and Two Olive Trees — Background for Rev 11:4

And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all [of] gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which [are] upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right [side] of the bowl, and the other upon the left [side] thereof. ... Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. ... Then answered I, and said unto him, What [are] these two olive trees upon the right [side] of the candlestick and upon the left [side] thereof?

Context: Zechariah's night vision of the golden lampstand with seven lamps and two olive trees; the angel interprets with 'not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit.'

Notes: מְנוֹרַת זָהָב (golden lampstand, H4501) with seven lamps and two olive trees. Rev 11:4 (the two witnesses = the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth) directly alludes to Zech 4:3,11,14. The lampstand in Zech 4 = divine empowerment (Spirit); in Revelation the two witnesses function as the lampstand/olive tree pair. Zech 4:14 (sons of oil = anointed ones) → Rev 11:4 (two olive trees = two witnesses).

Voice from Above the Mercy Seat — God Speaks from MHP

And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that [was] upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.

Context: Numbers 7 concludes the dedication offerings; Moses enters to receive divine communication from above the mercy seat.

Notes: God speaks from above the mercy seat (כַּפֹּרֶת, H3727) between the two cherubim (בֵּין שְׁנֵי הַכְּרֻבִים). This is the oracle-from-the-ark motif (Exod 25:22). Background for Rev 11:19 (naos opened, ark revealed) and the concept of God's voice issuing from the heavenly sanctuary/MHP. The ark = the divine communication point; its appearance in Rev 11:19 signals MHP access and divine council.

God Speaks from Between the Cherubim — Ark as Oracle

And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which [are] upon the ark of the testimony, of all [things] which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

Context: Exodus 25 ark design; God designates the mercy seat between the cherubim as the divine meeting/speech point.

Notes: וְנֹעַדְתִּי לְךָ שָׁם (I will meet with you there) — the mercy seat is the divine appointment point. God communicates to Israel from the MHP. This oracle function is activated when the naos is opened and the ark is seen (Rev 11:19) — the MHP access point is revealed precisely so the divine council can proceed. Compare Num 7:89 for the practical use of this oracle-meeting pattern.

Feast of Trumpets and Day of Atonement — Feast Calendar Context

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first [day] of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work [therein]: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Also on the tenth [day] of this seventh month [there shall be] a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it [is] a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.

Context: Leviticus 23 feast calendar; the Feast of Trumpets (1st of 7th month) and Day of Atonement (10th of 7th month) are given together.

Notes: Feast of Trumpets (זִכְרוֹן תְּרוּעָה) → Day of Atonement (יֹום הַכִּפֻּרִים) sequence in the 7th month. Structural parallel to Revelation: Feast of Trumpets = trumpet judgment sequence (Rev 8-11); Day of Atonement = bowl-series DOA typology (Rev 15-16). The feast calendar provides an independent structural index for the trumpet→DOA→Tabernacles progression documented in sanc-29.

Feast of Tabernacles — Feast Calendar Completion

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month [shall be] the feast of tabernacles [for] seven days unto the LORD. On the first day [shall be] an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work [therein]. Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it [is] a solemn assembly; [and] ye shall do no servile work [therein].

Context: Leviticus 23 feast calendar; the Feast of Tabernacles (15th-22nd of 7th month) follows the Day of Atonement.

Notes: חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת (Feast of Tabernacles/Booths) begins 15th of 7th month, 5 days after DOA. Seven days + 8th day solemn assembly. Structural parallel: Tabernacles = New Jerusalem scene (Rev 21-22) — God tabernacling with men (σκηνή τοῦ Θεοῦ, Rev 21:3). The feast calendar maps: Trumpets (Rev 8-11) → DOA (Rev 15-16) → Tabernacles (Rev 21-22). The New Jerusalem fulfills the Tabernacles typology: God dwelling permanently with his people.

Priests Unable to Minister — Cloud Fills Temple at Dedication

It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers [were] as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up [their] voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, [saying], For [he is] good; for his mercy [endureth] for ever: that [then] the house was filled with a cloud, [even] the house of the LORD; So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

Context: Chronicles parallel to 1 Kgs 8:10-11; the Shekinah glory fills Solomon's temple at its dedication, preventing priestly ministry.

Notes: הַבַּיִת מָלֵא עָנָן אֶת-בֵּית יְהוָה (the house filled with cloud) → כֹּהֲנִים לֹא יָכְלוּ לַעֲמֹד לְשָׁרֵת (priests unable to stand to minister). Third occurrence of the exclusion-by-divine-presence pattern (Exod 40:34-35; 1 Kgs 8:10-11; 2 Chr 5:13-14). All three converge on Rev 15:8 as the antitypical fulfillment: naos filled with smoke from God's glory → no man able to enter. The triple OT witness strengthens the Rev 15:8 DOA/presence reading.

Seven Trumpet Angels Prepare — Transition After Incense Prelude

And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

Context: Rev 8:6 marks the transition from the incense/altar prelude (8:1-5) to the trumpet series proper.

Notes: Καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ ἄγγελοι οἱ ἔχοντες τὰς ἑπτὰ σάλπιγγας ἡτοίμασαν αὐτοὺς ἵνα σαλπίσωσιν — the seven trumpet angels prepared themselves to sound. This verse is the structural pivot: incense offering (8:3-5, HP function) → trumpet series begins. Paulien's septet-introduction pattern: the golden altar/incense prelude (8:2-6) introduces the trumpet series, just as the throne room (4-5) introduces the seals. HP golden altar is the sanctuary context for the entire trumpet sequence.

Divine Warrior — Possible DOA Priest-Emergence Typology

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies [which were] in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Context: The Divine Warrior emerges from heaven on a white horse for the final battle; he is called Faithful and True, the Word of God.

Notes: Heaven opened (ἠνεῳγμένον τὸν οὐρανόν) — the warrior emerges from the opened heaven. Vesture dipped in blood (βεβαμμένον αἵματι) — judgment imagery. Fine linen, white and clean (βύσσινον λευκὸν καθαρόν) = same linen as the bowl-angels (Rev 15:6). Possible DOA typology: the high priest emerged from the MHP after completing atonement (Lev 16:24 — 'he shall come out, and offer his burnt offering'). The warrior-priest emergence from the opened heaven after the bowl series (DOA typology) parallels the high priest's post-atonement emergence. Confidence: Moderate/Weak — the primary reading is Divine Warrior, not priest-emergence.
