Question

What does structural and OT-typological evidence identify about the beast of Revelation 13? Evaluate four models: individual eschatological figure, political-religious system, symbolic-universal, preterist.

Daniel 7:3-7

Daniel 7:3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. Daniel 7:4 The first [was] like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. Daniel 7:5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and [it had] three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. Daniel 7:6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. Daniel 7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it [was] diverse from all the beasts that [were] before it; and it had ten horns.

Notes: Source imagery for Rev 13:1-2 composite beast. Sequential beasts: lion (1 head, Babylon), bear (1 head, Medo-Persia), leopard with 4 heads (Greece), terrible beast with 10 horns (Rome). Cumulative heads: 1+1+4+1 = 7.

Daniel 7:8

Daniel 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn [were] eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Notes: Little horn with 'mouth speaking great things' — LXX Theodotion renders as stoma laloun megala, the exact phrase reproduced verbatim in Rev 13:5. Proof of deliberate literary dependence (TM205).

Daniel 7:17

Daniel 7:17 These great beasts, which are four, [are] four kings, [which] shall arise out of the earth.

Notes: EXPLICIT DECODER #1: beast = king/kingdom. The text's OWN interpretive key. Interchangeability of malkin (king) and malkuw (kingdom) reflects corporate solidarity in prophetic symbolism. Any interpretive model must account for this within-text explanation.

Daniel 7:23

Daniel 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

Notes: EXPLICIT DECODER #2: substitutes 'kingdom' (malkuw H4438) for 'king' (malkin H4430), confirming that beast = political power structure, not merely individual leader.

Daniel 7:25

Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

  • מִלִּין () — Noun.fp.Abs — word
  • לְצַד () — Prep + Noun.ms.Cst — to/against the side of
  • עליא () — Adj.ms — highest / Most High
  • יְמַלִּל () — Verb.pael.Impf.3ms — speak
  • קַדִּישֵׁי () — Adj.mp.Cst — holy ones
  • עֶלְיוֹנִין () — Adj.mp.Abs — Most High
  • יְבַלֵּא () — Verb.pael.Impf.3ms — wear out
  • יִסְבַּר () — Verb.peal.Impf.3ms — intend/think
  • הַשְׁנָיָה () — Verb.haf.InfCon — to change
  • זִמְנִין () — Noun.mp.Abs — times/seasons
  • דָת () — Noun.fs.Abs — law
  • יִתְיַהֲבוּן () — Verb.htpe.Impf.3mp — be given (passive)
  • בִּידֵהּ () — Prep + Noun.fs.Abs + 3ms suffix — into his hand
  • עִדָּן וְעִדָּנִין וּפְלַג עִדָּן () — Noun.ms + Noun.mp + Noun.ms.Cst + Noun.ms — a time and times and half a time

Notes: Little horn profile embedded in Rev 13:5-7. Near point-for-point parallel: (1) speak against Most High = Rev 13:5 blasphemies; (2) wear out saints = Rev 13:7 war with saints; (3) given into his hand = Rev 13:5,7 edothe; (4) time-times-half = Rev 13:5 forty-two months. SP115 tripartite verbal chain: Dan 7:25 → 2 Thess 2:3-4 → Rev 13:5-7. The Aramaic yithyahabun (htpe.Impf.3mp = passive 'they shall be given') is the Aramaic antecedent of Greek edothe (divine passive).

Exodus 15:11

Exodus 15:11 Who [is] like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who [is] like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful [in] praises, doing wonders?

Notes: Original incomparability formula: LXX tis homoios soi en theois Kyrie. Rev 13:4 reproduces the same Greek structure (tis homoios to therio) for a creature — blasphemous inversion of the Exodus worship hymn. The name Michael (mi-kha-el = 'who is like God?') directly answers this formula.

Revelation 13:1-2

Revelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

Notes: Composite beast description: leopard body (Greece), bear feet (Medo-Persia), lion mouth (Babylon) — REVERSED order from Daniel (TM204). Dragon's threefold active delegation: dynamis + thronos + exousia megale. Seven heads = mathematical sum of Daniel's four beasts (1+1+4+1=7, TM206). Ten horns from Dan 7:7 fourth beast.

Revelation 13:3-4

Revelation 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. Revelation 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

Notes: Death-wound parody: sphazo perfect passive pair — Rev 5:6 hos esphagmenon (neuter, Lamb) vs Rev 13:3 hos esphagmenen (feminine, head). Incomparability formula: 'Who is like unto the beast?' (tis homoios to therio) parodies Exod 15:11 'Who is like unto thee, O LORD?' Same Greek structure (tis homoios + dative) applied to creature = blasphemous inversion.

Revelation 13:5-7

Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months. Revelation 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. Revelation 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

Notes: The grammatical backbone of the passage. stoma laloun megala = verbatim LXX Dan 7:8 (TM205). edothe divine passive architecture: God permits, dragon grants. 42-month hostile-subject formula (SP079). Threefold blasphemy target (13:6): God's name, tabernacle (skene G4633 = Christ's heavenly ministry per Heb 8:2), heaven-dwellers. Dan 7:25 profile point-for-point: speak against Most High, wear out saints, given into hand, time-times-half.

Revelation 13:8

Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Notes: Universal scope of beast worship (pasa phyle kai glossa). Book of life of the Lamb slain from foundation of world — cosmic context. The Lamb's sacrificial death is eternal foundation; beast's wound-healing is temporal parody.

Revelation 13:11-15

Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. Revelation 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. Revelation 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, Revelation 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. Revelation 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Notes: Second beast (false prophet) as Spirit-parody. Six documented Spirit-function parallels: (1) lamb-like appearance vs dragon speech; (2) fire from heaven (counterfeiting Elijah/Pentecost); (3) pneuma to image (counterfeiting Spirit's life-giving); (4) directing worship to another (counterfeiting Spirit glorifying Christ per John 16:14); (5) marking followers (counterfeiting Spirit's sealing per Eph 1:13); (6) sign-working for authentication. arnion anomaly: 29/30 Christological uses, sole exception here. elalei imperfect = habitual dragon speech.

Revelation 13:16-18

Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.

Notes: Charagma (G5480) on forehead/hand contrasts sphragis (G4973) seal in Rev 7:3. Inverts Deut 6:6-8 loyalty pattern. 666 as parody of divine triple completeness (IC184). Anarthrous anthropou = qualitative 'human-ness' rather than specific individual identification. Economic coercion (buy/sell) as enforcement mechanism.

Revelation 5:6

Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

Notes: The Christological original for Rev 13:3 parody. Same verb (sphazo G4969), same hos construction, same perfect passive aspect — but neuter gender (matching arnion) vs feminine gender in 13:3 (matching kephale). Lamb's wound is permanent redemptive identity; beast's wound was healed (etherapeuthē = divine passive). Seven horns = complete power vs beast's ten horns = derivative power.

Revelation 12:3

Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

Notes: Dragon with seven heads, ten horns, seven diadems ON HEADS. Same shared anatomy as beast (13:1) — but diadem distribution shifts: dragon has 7 on heads, beast has 10 on horns. Diadema arc: dragon 7 on heads → beast 10 on horns → Christ polla ('many') on head (19:12). Parody escalates in counted quantities; divine transcends counting.

Revelation 17:8-11

Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. Revelation 17:9 And here [is] the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. Revelation 17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, [and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. Revelation 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Notes: Inverted temporal formula: divine (is-was-is coming, Rev 1:4) vs beast (was-is not-shall come up from abyss). Beast cannot sustain the divine present tense (ouk estin). Triple identification: heads = mountains = kings (17:9-10). Five fallen, one is, one not yet come. Eighth king ek ton hepta = qualitative transformation. Beast's formula includes its own destruction (goes to perdition) — divine formula has no end clause.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 2 Thessalonians 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Notes: SP115 tripartite verbal chain: Dan 7:25 → 2 Thess 2:3-4 → Rev 13:5-7. Paul condenses the little horn profile into a single figure (man of lawlessness). John distributes the same profile across TWO figures: sea beast (political blasphemer, Rev 13:1-8) and earth beast (sign-working deceiver, Rev 13:11-15). Present participles antikeimenos and hyperairomenos indicate habitual, ongoing opposition and self-exaltation — consistent with a system rather than a momentary individual act.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

2 Thessalonians 2:9 [Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 2 Thessalonians 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Notes: Parousia of the lawless one kata energeian tou Satana — 'according to the working of Satan.' With all power (dynamis), signs (semeia), and lying wonders (terata pseudous). Parallels false prophet's sign-working in Rev 13:13-14. The Satanic source matches Rev 13:2 dragon delegation.

Revelation 14:7

Revelation 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Notes: First angel's message: proskynesate (worship, aorist imperative) the Creator. Direct antidote to beast-worship of Rev 13:4,12,15. Creator-worship formula verbally echoes Exod 20:11 (heaven, earth, sea — Sabbath commandment rationale). Positioned AFTER beast's 42 months and BEFORE harvest.

Revelation 19:19-20

Revelation 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Notes: Resolution: beast and false prophet captured alive, cast into lake of fire. The parody system is terminated — the counterfeit trinity destroyed. 'Cast alive' (zontes) contrasts with Lamb who was slain yet lives (5:6). The beast's end is not death-and-resurrection but irreversible destruction.

Revelation 11:2-3

Revelation 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months. Revelation 11:3 And I will give [power] unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Notes: SP079 subject differentiation: 42 months = Gentiles trample (hostile, edothe passive); 1260 days = witnesses prophesy (preservation, doso active first person — God directly commissions). Rev 11:2 edothe (passive) for hostile trampling vs 11:3 doso (active) for faithful prophesying = different agency layers within same duration.

Revelation 12:6

Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days.

Notes: 1260 days — preservation formula. Woman nourished in wilderness. Preserved subjects always receive the '1260 days' designation (SP079).

Revelation 12:14

Revelation 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Notes: Time-times-half — LXX Dan 7:25 quotation applied to woman's wilderness preservation. Third formula for the same period: 42 months (hostile), 1260 days (preservation), time-times-half (cosmic/LXX quotation). SP079 zero exceptions across all five occurrences.

1 John 2:18

1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

Notes: Antichristoi polloi (many antichrists) have come — PLURAL, already present in John's day. Challenges purely futurist single-individual model. The antichrist principle is operative throughout the church age, not exclusively future.

1 John 4:3

1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Notes: Spirit of antichrist ALREADY in the world — present tense, not exclusively future. Supports system/universal reading over single future individual. Denial of incarnation is the antichrist's defining characteristic.

Revelation 1:4

Revelation 1:4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

Notes: Divine temporal formula: ho on kai ho en kai ho erchomenos (the one who IS, and WAS, and IS TO COME). Present tense FIRST = essential being. This is the original that Rev 17:8 beast formula inverts (was-is not-shall come). Beast cannot sustain the divine present tense.

Hosea 13:7-8

Hosea 13:7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe [them]: Hosea 13:8 I will meet them as a bear [that is] bereaved [of her whelps], and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

Notes: The ONLY OT passage combining lion, leopard, and bear simultaneously. YHWH as simultaneous divine judgment agent using all three predator images. Rev 13:2 inherits both Daniel's sequential tradition AND Hosea's simultaneous tradition. Cross-testament parallels tool confirmed: Hosea 13:7 scored 0.392 hybrid match with Rev 13:2 — highest OT match.

Daniel 7:9-10

Daniel 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire. Daniel 7:10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

Notes: Throne-setting with Ancient of Days. Distributed across Rev 4-5 (throne) and Rev 20:11-13 (judgment books). Christological merger: Rev 1:14 applies Ancient of Days' white-wool hair to Son of Man figure (TM207).

Numbers 14:34

Numbers 14:34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, [even] forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, [even] forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.

Notes: Day-year principle foundation #1: 'each day for a year' (yom lashshanah). Doubled for emphasis. Foundation for interpreting 42 months/1260 days as prophetic-day = literal-year.

Ezekiel 4:6

Ezekiel 4:6 And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.

Notes: Day-year principle foundation #2: 'I have appointed thee each day for a year.' Same formula as Num 14:34.

Daniel 3:1-7

Daniel 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height [was] threescore cubits, [and] the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. Daniel 3:2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. Daniel 3:3 Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Daniel 3:4 Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages, Daniel 3:5 [That] at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: Daniel 3:6 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Daniel 3:7 Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of musick, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down [and] worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

Notes: Fivefold structural parallel with Rev 13:14-15: (1) image made by political authority; (2) universal command to worship; (3) death penalty for non-compliance; (4) fourfold universal formula (people, nations, languages); (5) enforcement through gathered political power. OT type for forced worship under threat.

Exodus 20:11

Exodus 20:11 For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Notes: Sabbath commandment rationale citing Creation. Rev 14:7 first angel echoes this verbatim — 'him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea.' Creator-worship as antidote to beast-worship.

Genesis 1:26-27

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Notes: Imago Dei — eikon tou theou (LXX). Starting point of the eikon chain: Gen 1:26 (imago Dei) → Col 1:15 (Christ as eikon tou theou) → Rev 13:14-15 (manufactured eikona to therio). Theological degradation tracked through case shifts.

Deuteronomy 6:6-8

Deuteronomy 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Notes: Original hand-and-forehead loyalty pattern: bind God's words as sign on hand and frontlets between eyes. Beast's charagma on forehead/hand (Rev 13:16) inverts this Deuteronomic loyalty marker. God's words → beast's mark. Willing devotion → economic coercion.

Colossians 1:15

Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

Notes: Christ as eikon tou theou tou aoratou — Christological image midpoint in the eikon chain from Gen 1:26 to Rev 13:14. Genitive case: eikon tou theou (image OF God).

John 16:14

John 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.

Notes: Holy Spirit glorifies Christ by directing worship/attention to Him. The false prophet (Rev 13:12) parodies this by directing worship to the beast. Spirit-parody function #4.

Ephesians 1:13

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Notes: Sealed (esphragisthete) with the Holy Spirit of promise — divine sealing that charagma (beast's mark) counterfeits. sphragis (seal) vs charagma (mark) competition.

Revelation 7:3

Revelation 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

Notes: Sealing of God's servants on foreheads — sphragis on metopon. Same anatomical location where charagma competes (Rev 13:16). God and beast compete for the same forehead. Seal = willing allegiance; mark = coerced compliance.

Matthew 28:18

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Notes: All exousia in heaven and earth given to Christ — the divine original. Rev 13:2 dragon gives exousia megale to beast — parody of divine authority delegation. Christ receives from Father; beast receives from dragon.

Job 1:6-12

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath [is] in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

Notes: Satan operating within divinely set bounds. Structural parallel to Rev 13's edothe divine passives — the beast operates only within what God permits. God sets the boundary; Satan/beast operates within it.

Mark 2:7

Mark 2:7 Why doth this [man] thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

Notes: Biblical definition of blasphemy #1: claiming to forgive sins = prerogative belonging to God alone. Relevant to Rev 13:1,5,6 blasphemia vocabulary.

John 10:33

John 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

Notes: Biblical definition of blasphemy #2: 'making thyself God.' Defines the blasphemia the beast commits against God's name (Rev 13:6). A human entity claiming divine status.

Daniel 8:10-12

Daniel 8:10 And it waxed great, [even] to the host of heaven; and it cast down [some] of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. Daniel 8:11 Yea, he magnified [himself] even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily [sacrifice] was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. Daniel 8:12 And an host was given [him] against the daily [sacrifice] by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

Notes: Little horn's threefold attack: (1) host/stars, (2) daily/prince, (3) sanctuary. Maps to Rev 13:6 threefold blasphemy target: (1) God's name, (2) tabernacle (skene), (3) heaven-dwellers. Dan 8:12 'host was given' = same passive construction as Rev 13 edothe.

Revelation 20:4

Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Notes: Resolution of Rev 13 worship conflict. Those who did NOT worship beast or image, did NOT receive mark — the faithful remnant. They lived and reigned with Christ. The beast's temporary nikao (13:7) is reversed by the saints' eternal reign.

Daniel 9:24-27

Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, [that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince [shall be] seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof [shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Notes: 70 weeks = 490 prophetic days = 490 literal years. Historical verification of day-year principle by fulfilled chronology. Establishes hermeneutical framework for interpreting 42 months (= 1260 days) as 1260 literal years.

Isaiah 53:7

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Notes: Messianic lamb-to-slaughter imagery. The genuine Lamb tradition that the beast's arnion-like false prophet (Rev 13:11) counterfeits.

Revelation 5:8,9,12

Revelation 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; Revelation 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

Notes: Lamb worship — proskuneo directed to arnion. Genuine heavenly worship scene that beast-worship in Rev 13:4 parodies. 'Thou wast slain (esphages)' = aorist passive of sphazo.

Revelation 14:1

Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.

Notes: Father's NAME on foreheads — divine seal. Contrasts beast's mark/number on foreheads (13:16-17). Name = character. Seal = identity.

Revelation 17:14

Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.

Notes: Resolution of the nikao thread: Lamb overcomes (nikesei) the beast system. Rev 13:7 beast temporarily overcomes saints → Rev 17:14 Lamb overcomes beast. The nikao inversion is resolved.

Revelation 6:4,9

Revelation 6:4 And there went out another horse [that was] red: and [power] was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. Revelation 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Notes: sphazo usage: Rev 6:4 literal killing (slaughter); Rev 6:9 martyrs 'slain' (esphagmenon) for testimony. Of sphazo's NT occurrences: 4x Lamb's death, 2x martyr slaughter, 1x literal killing, 1x beast parody (13:3), 1x Cain/Abel (1 John 3:12).

1 John 3:12

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

Notes: sphazo in non-Revelation context — Cain slew (esphaxen) Abel. Confirms the Johannine concentration of this verb.

Revelation 19:12

Revelation 19:12 His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Notes: Christ with polla (many) diadems on head. Diadema arc completion: dragon 7 on heads (12:3) → beast 10 on horns (13:1) → Christ polla on head (19:12). Parody escalates in counted quantities; divine original transcends counting.

Daniel 8:23-25

Daniel 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. Daniel 8:24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. Daniel 8:25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify [himself] in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Notes: King of fierce countenance — 'not by his own power' parallels beast receiving power from dragon. 'Broken without hand' = divine agency, parallel to divine passive architecture in Rev 13.

Daniel 11:36-37

Daniel 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Daniel 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Notes: Self-exaltation above every god — parallels 2 Thess 2:4 hyperairomenos epi panta legomenon theon. 'Speak marvellous things against the God of gods' parallels Rev 13:5-6 mouth speaking great things and blasphemies.
