Verses¶
Question¶
What does Revelation's literary architecture establish about the new creation (Rev 21:1-22:5)?
Opening declaration of new creation¶
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA09 kainos vs neos, FA12 restoration vs replacement
Notes: kainos (G2537) used twice — ouranon kainon kai gen kainen. Verb apelthan (G565 aorist) governs the passing of first heaven/earth. Same verb at 21:4 for former things. ouk estin eti for sea — different construction from 21:4.
City-bride dual identity¶
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror, FA09 kainos
Notes: kainen Ierousalem — third kainos occurrence in two verses. nymphen kekosmemenen — bride adorned (perfect passive participle). Descends FROM God — origin is heavenly.
Permanent Tabernacles-antitype declaration¶
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.
Context: FA10 skene tou theou, FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP030 antithesis to 18:2)
Notes: ONLY NT verse where noun skene (G4633) and verb skenoo (G4637) co-occur. Double sken- root. skenosei — future active indicative 3rd sg. Echoes Lev 26:11-12 and Ezek 37:27. Antithesis to Rev 18:2 katoiketerion daimonion.
Fourfold ouk eti removal¶
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: thanatos ouk estai eti — death no more (future + negative + adverb). oute penthos oute krauge oute ponos — triple oute construction. ta prota apelthan — same verb aperchomai (G565 aorist 3pl) as 21:1. Four Fall-consequences systematically removed.
Throne speech — kaina poio panta¶
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Context: FA09 kainos vs neos, FA12 restoration vs replacement
Notes: kaina poio panta — present active indicative 1st sg of poieo. PRESENT tense — ongoing creative act, not a one-time event. kainos (G2537) not neos (G3501). The seated one speaks directly only here and 21:6.
Ginomai arc terminus — gegonan¶
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Context: FA12 restoration vs replacement, ginomai arc
Notes: Gegonan (G1096 perfect plural) — eschatological perfect declaring completion. Third station of ginomai arc: egeneto (11:15) -> gegonen (16:17) -> gegonan (21:6). Alpha-Omega self-designation. dorean — freely.
Overcomer capstone — kleronomeo shift¶
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
Context: FA06 overcomer promise fulfillment chain
Notes: ho nikon (G3528 present active participle) kleronomeo (G2816) tauta panta. Verb shift from doso (I will give, letters) to kleronomeo (shall inherit). Sonship formula: I will be his God, he shall be my son. Echoes 2 Sam 7:14.
Antithetical exclusion list¶
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Context: FA06 overcomer promise fulfillment chain
Notes: Structural counterpart to 21:7. ho thanatos ho deuteros — the second death. Eight categories of the excluded. Answers overcomer promise 2 (Smyrna, 2:11) from the negative side.
Angel introduction — mirror of 17:1¶
And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP001)
Notes: Same introductory formula as 17:1. Angel from seven-bowl group. Come hither formula. Bride/Lamb's wife parallels harlot/great whore.
En Pneumati transport — mirror of 17:3¶
And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror
Notes: apophero (G667) + en Pneumati — identical formula to 17:3. Only two NT occurrences of this combination. Wilderness (17:3) vs great high mountain (21:10). Binding formula for Visions 3 and 4.
Twelve-saturation begins¶
And had a wall great and high, [and] had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are [the names] of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Context: FA08 cosmic MHP
Notes: Twelve gates, twelve angels, twelve tribes. First layer of twelve-saturation.
Twelve foundations — apostolic layer¶
And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Context: FA08 cosmic MHP, FA07 escalation beyond Eden
Notes: Twelve foundations, twelve apostles. No Genesis parallel — genuinely new feature. Combines OT tribes with NT apostles in one structure.
Cosmic MHP — cubic dimensions¶
And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
Context: FA08 cosmic MHP
Notes: tetragonos (G5068) — NT hapax. Equal length/breadth/height = perfect cube = MHP proportions of 1 Kgs 6:20. 12,000 stadia. The entire city IS the Most Holy Place at cosmic scale.
STRUCTURAL CLIMAX — sanctuary terminus¶
And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
Context: FA01 no naos, FA02 river source-shift, FA08 cosmic MHP
Notes: naon ouk eidon en aute — naos (G3485 acc sg) + ouk (negative) + eidon (aorist active indicative 1st sg). Then: ho kyrios ho theos ho pantokrator naos autes estin kai to arnion — naos (nominative) as predicate. Chiastic structure: negation then affirmation. Temple absorbed into divine persons. Endpoint of 16-occurrence naos arc across Revelation.
Divine light replaces celestial — lychnos reversal¶
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP026)
Notes: doxa tou theou photizo. lychnos autes to arnion — same lychnos vocabulary as 18:23 (Babylon's extinguished lamp) but opposite outcome. Lamb IS the lamp.
Permanent open access — reversal of Gen 3:24¶
And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: Gates never shut — opposite of Eden's cherubim-guarded access (Gen 3:24). nyx ouk estai ekei — no night there.
Access criterion — book of life¶
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Context: FA06 overcomer promise fulfillment (promise 5, Sardis)
Notes: Only those in Lamb's book of life enter. Fulfills overcomer promise 5 (Rev 3:5) — name not blotted from book of life.
River source-shift from temple to throne¶
And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Context: FA02 Ezek 47 river source-shift
Notes: potamon hydatos zoes — river of water of life. lampron hos krystallon — clear as crystal. ekporeuomenon ek tou thronou — proceeding FROM THE THRONE. Source personal (divine throne) not architectural (temple threshold as in Ezek 47:1). Structurally inseparable from 21:22 no-temple declaration.
Tree of life bookend with escalation¶
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, [was there] the tree of life, which bare twelve [manner of] fruits, [and] yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree [were] for the healing of the nations.
Context: FA03 tree of life bookend, FA02 healing leaves, FA06 overcomer promise 1
Notes: xylon zoes (G3586 + G2222) — verbatim LXX phrase from Gen 2:9. enteuthen kai ekeithen — on either side. dodeka karpous — twelve fruits. kata mena hekaston — each month. therapeia (G2322) ton ethnon — healing of the nations. Merges Gen 2:9 (tree of life) with Ezek 47:12 (monthly fruit, healing leaves). Fulfills overcomer promise 1 (Rev 2:7).
Curse removal — katathema NT hapax¶
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA11 katathema/katara reversal chain
Notes: pan katathema (G2652) ouk estai eti — every cursed thing shall be no more. katathema is NT hapax. Future of eimi with ouk eti = permanent cessation. pan = comprehensive — no partial removal. Reverses Gen 3:17 epikataratos. Throne of God and of the Lamb IN the city. latreuousin — shall serve (future active indicative 3rd pl of latreuo).
Face-of-God reversal — prosopon bookend¶
And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads.
Context: FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends, FA05 forehead inscription mirror
Notes: prosopon (G4383) autou — His face. Reversal of Gen 3:8 hiding from God's prosopon. His name on foreheads — reversal of Babylon's forehead inscription (17:5), fulfillment of high priest's gold plate HOLINESS TO THE LORD (Exod 28:36). Fulfills overcomer promises 3 and 6.
Eternal reign — final ouk eti and overcomer fulfillment¶
And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA06 overcomer promises 4 and 7
Notes: nyx ouk estai eti — no more night. basileusousin eis tous aionas ton aionon — shall reign for ever and ever (future active indicative 3rd pl). Fulfills overcomer promise 4 (authority/morning star, 2:26-28) and 7 (throne-sharing, 3:21). Five of seven overcomer promises converge in 22:1-5.
First tree of life — ets hayyim¶
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Context: FA03 tree of life bookend, FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: ets (H6086) hayyim (H2416) — tree of life. LXX: xylon tes zoes — verbatim match with Rev 22:2. Both tree of life AND tree of knowledge present in Eden. In Rev 22, tree of knowledge absent — one tree removed, one restored and escalated.
River from Eden — source comparison¶
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
Context: FA02 river source-shift, FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: River source is Eden/land. Rev 22:1 source is the throne of God. LXX: potamos exeporeueto ek tou Eden — parallels Rev 22:1 potamon ekporeuomenon ek tou thronou.
Hiding from God's face — reversed at Rev 22:4¶
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Context: FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: Hid from the prosopon (LXX) / presence of God. Reversed at Rev 22:4 where the redeemed SEE His face (prosopon). Face-of-God bookend across the canon.
First curse — serpent arur¶
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou [art] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Context: FA11 curse removal chain
Notes: arur (H779) — first use of the formal curse verb. LXX: epikataratos (G1944). The curse chain begins here and ends at Rev 22:3.
Ground cursed — epikataratos he ge¶
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;
Context: FA11 curse removal chain, FA04 ouk eti cluster
Notes: arur (H779) ha-adamah — cursed is the ground. LXX: epikataratos he ge. This curse is what Rev 22:3 katathema reverses. Different Greek compound but same root concept.
Access to tree of life threatened¶
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Context: FA03 tree of life bookend
Notes: Access to tree of life about to be blocked. The tree persists — it is not destroyed, just guarded.
Access blocked — cherubim guard tree of life¶
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Context: FA03 tree of life bookend, FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: Cherubim with flaming sword BLOCK access. Rev 22:2,14 RESTORE access. Gates never shut (21:25) vs guarded entrance. The reversal is not mere restoration but escalation — from guarded gate to permanently open gates.
Very good — creation assessment¶
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Context: FA07 Genesis-Revelation bookends
Notes: kalon lian (LXX) — very good. Rev 21:5 kaina poio panta — I make all things new. Thematic parallel: original creation assessment vs new creation declaration.
Cain cursed — curse extends¶
And now [art] thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
Context: FA11 curse removal chain
Notes: Second personal curse after the serpent. The curse expands from serpent to ground to person.
River from temple threshold — source text for Rev 22:1¶
Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house [stood toward] the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south [side] of the altar.
Context: FA02 Ezek 47 river source-shift
Notes: Waters from under miphtan habayit — threshold of the house/temple. Source is architectural — a building. Rev 22:1 shifts source to the throne of God and of the Lamb because 21:22 has dissolved the temple distinction.
Monthly fruit and healing leaves — source for Rev 22:2¶
And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
Context: FA02 river source-shift, FA03 tree of life bookend
Notes: le-chadashav — new fruit monthly. terufah (H8644) — medicine/healing. Rev 22:2 uses therapeia (G2322). Scope widens: Ezekiel's local healing to universal healing of nations. Monthly fruit detail comes from Ezekiel, not Genesis.
YHWH shammah — culmination of Ezekiel's temple vision¶
[It was] round about eighteen thousand [measures]: and the name of the city from [that] day [shall be], The LORD [is] there.
Context: FA02 river source-shift
Notes: YHWH shammah — the LORD is there. Rev 21:3 fulfills: God himself shall be with them. Rev 21:22 transcends: God IS the temple. Three words (naon ouk eidon) cancel Ezekiel's nine chapters of temple plans — not as oversight but as climactic completion.
MHP dimensions — perfect cube¶
And the oracle in the forepart [was] twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and [so] covered the altar [which was of] cedar.
Context: FA08 cosmic MHP
Notes: 20 x 20 x 20 cubits — perfect cube. The ONLY other perfect cube in Scripture besides Rev 21:16. The MHP was entered only once a year by the high priest on the Day of Atonement. Rev 21:16 scales this to cosmic proportions — the entire city IS the MHP.
OT source for new creation¶
For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
Context: FA09 kainos vs neos
Notes: hinni bore (H1254 — divine creation verb) shamayim chadashim (H2319) va-arets chadashah. LXX: kainos (G2537). Direct OT source for Rev 21:1. bara + chadash in Hebrew; kainos in LXX and Rev 21:1.
Death swallowed up — constrains Isa 65:20¶
He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken [it].
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster
Notes: billa hammavet lanetsach — God swallows up death forever. Quoted at 1 Cor 15:54. Constrains everything after death's destruction to deathless reality. Establishes that Rev 21:4 death-abolition fulfills Isaiah's eschatological promise.
New heavens and earth permanence¶
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
Context: FA09 kainos vs neos
Notes: New heavens and new earth + permanence. Verse 23 adds new moons and Sabbaths — monthly worship cycle potentially corresponding to Rev 22:2 twelve monthly fruits.
Monthly worship cycle in new creation¶
And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
Context: FA03 tree of life bookend
Notes: New moon to new moon + Sabbath to Sabbath worship in the new creation. May correspond to Rev 22:2 monthly fruit cycle.
Overcomer promise 1 — tree of life (Ephesus)¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Context: FA06 overcomer chain, FA03 tree of life bookend
Notes: xylon tes zoes — same phrase as Gen 2:9 LXX and Rev 22:2. Fulfilled at Rev 22:2,14.
Overcomer promise 2 — no second death (Smyrna)¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Context: FA06 overcomer chain
Notes: Fulfilled at Rev 21:7-8. Overcomers inherit all things; non-overcomers face second death.
Overcomer promise 3 — hidden manna, new name (Pergamos)¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it].
Context: FA06 overcomer chain
Notes: Fulfilled at Rev 22:4 — new name and access to tree of life.
Overcomer promise 4a — authority over nations (Thyatira)¶
And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Context: FA06 overcomer chain
Notes: Fulfilled at 22:5 reign forever.
Overcomer promise 4b — morning star (Thyatira)¶
And I will give him the morning star.
Context: FA06 overcomer chain
Notes: Fulfilled at 22:16 bright morning star.
Overcomer promise 5 — white garments, book of life (Sardis)¶
He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Context: FA06 overcomer chain
Notes: Fulfilled at 21:27 — only those in Lamb's book of life enter.
Overcomer promise 6 — pillar in naos, New Jerusalem name (Philadelphia)¶
Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [which is] new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and [I will write upon him] my new name.
Context: FA06 overcomer chain, FA01 no naos tension
Notes: Promises pillar in naos — but 21:22 says no naos. Resolution: God and the Lamb ARE the naos. The pillar remains; the building has been replaced by the Person. kainen Ierousalem — name of New Jerusalem written.
Overcomer promise 7 — throne-sharing (Laodicea)¶
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Context: FA06 overcomer chain
Notes: Fulfilled at 22:3 throne of God and of the Lamb in the city, and 22:5 they shall reign.
Proleptic Tabernacles scene¶
Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
Context: FA10 skene tou theou, FA01 naos arc
Notes: skenosei (G4637 future) ep autous — He shall tabernacle OVER them. naos still present here. Proleptic anticipation of 21:3. Between 7:15 (naos present, skenosei used) and 21:22 (naos absorbed, skenosei used), the temple has undergone transformation.
Incarnation tabernacling — skenoo inclusio start¶
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Context: FA10 skene tou theou
Notes: eskenosen (G4637 aorist active indicative 3rd sg) en hemin — tabernacled among us. Forms inclusio with Rev 21:3 skenosei (future) bracketing the entire Johannine corpus. Incarnation-to-consummation arc.
Ginomai arc station 1 — proleptic aorist egeneto¶
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
Context: FA12 restoration vs replacement
Notes: egeneto (G1096 aorist) — proleptic aorist declaring the kingdom transfer as already accomplished. First station of ginomai arc.
MHP ark revealed — naos progression¶
And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Context: FA01 naos arc
Notes: enoige ho naos tou theou, opthe he kibotos — naos opened, ark seen. MHP access. Structural precursor to 21:22 dissolution.
Skenoo present tense — heavenly inhabitants¶
Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Context: FA10 skene tou theou
Notes: skenountes (G4637 present active participle) — those tabernacling in heaven. Third of five skenoo occurrences.
Beast blasphemes tabernacle — skenoo present¶
And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Context: FA10 skene tou theou, FA05 Babylon-bride mirror
Notes: ten skenen autou kai tous en to ourano skenountas — his tabernacle (G4633) and those tabernacling (G4637 present participle) in heaven. Fourth skenoo occurrence. Both skene and skenoo co-occur.
DOA hinge — triple-genitive hapax¶
And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:
Context: FA01 naos arc
Notes: ho naos tes skenes tou martyriou — triple-genitive NT hapax (TM100). naos + skene co-occur. Five indicators mark DOA opening. Terminal sanctuary phase begins.
No entry into naos — judgment phase¶
And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: FA01 naos arc
Notes: No one could enter the naos. Access blocked during judgment. The naos is active but inaccessible.
Last naos occurrence — gegonen¶
And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
Context: FA01 naos arc, FA12 ginomai arc station 2
Notes: Last naos mention before 21:22 negation. gegonen (G1096 perfect singular) — It is done. Second station of ginomai arc. The gap between 16:17 and 21:22 is structurally significant — naos disappears from the narrative.
En Pneumati transport to see Babylon — mirror of 21:10¶
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror
Notes: apenegken (G667 apophero) me en pneumati — carried me in the Spirit. Same formula as 21:10 for New Jerusalem. Into the wilderness vs to a great high mountain.
Babylon's forehead inscription — reversed at 22:4¶
And upon her forehead [was] a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP028)
Notes: Name on forehead — Babylon. Reversed at Rev 22:4 with God's name on foreheads.
Blood of saints — antithesis to river of life¶
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP025)
Notes: Harlot drunk with blood of saints (haima). Antithesis: New Jerusalem offers river of water of life (22:1).
Habitation of demons — antithesis to tabernacle of God¶
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP030)
Notes: katoiketerion daimonion — habitation of demons (different Greek word family from skene). Antithesis to 21:3 skene tou theou — tabernacle of God.
Sevenfold ou me...eti removal begins¶
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast [it] into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP027)
Notes: First of seven life-elements taken from Babylon via ou me...eti construction. Structural counterpart to 21:4 suffering-elements.
Sevenfold removal continues — music, craft, mill¶
And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft [he be], shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster, FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP027)
Notes: ou me...eti repeated. Three more life-elements removed: music, craft, millstone.
Lamp extinguished — lychnos reversed at 21:23¶
And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Context: FA05 Babylon-bride mirror (VP026, VP027)
Notes: phos lychnou ou me phane en soi eti — light of lamp shall shine no more. Same lychnos vocabulary reversed at 21:23 where the Lamb IS the lychnos. Bridegroom and bride voices silenced — opposite of 22:17.
Earth and heaven flee — sets up 21:1¶
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
Context: FA12 restoration vs replacement
Notes: ephugen (G5343 pheugo) — strong verb for departure. Establishes the need for new heaven and new earth at 21:1.
Death destroyed — precondition for 21:4¶
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Context: FA04 ouk eti cluster
Notes: Death and Hades cast into lake of fire. Precondition for 21:4 death shall be no more. Cf. 1 Cor 15:26 last enemy destroyed is death.
Elements melting — replacement imagery¶
