E-Items Classified Cond. — Tree 3 Walkthroughs

E3 (Jer 51:11) — "the vengeance of the LORD... to destroy it" — Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — lehashchitah (Hiphil infinitive construct of shachath H7843 = destroy). Destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Babylon as a city/nation. However, the people within Babylon are the ultimate subjects of the destruction. The vengeance is declared against the city and its inhabitants. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: neqamah (Noun.fs.Cst = vengeance), lehashchitah (Verb.Hiphil.InfCon + 3fs suffix = to destroy it). The infinitive construct states the purpose: vengeance = to destroy. No alternative parsing. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Prophetic direct speech ("Thus saith the LORD"). Didactic-equivalent per methodology. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all vengeance-outcome E-items. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E13 (2 Pet 2:6) — Sodom "turned into ashes" (tephroō), example to the ungodly — Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — tephroō (G5077 = turn to ashes) = destruction/cessation. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Sodom's inhabitants. Literal people. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: tephroōsas (V-AAP-NSM = aorist active participle, nominative singular masculine, "having turned to ashes"). katastrophē (N-DSF = overthrow). Standard grammar. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Epistle (2 Peter). Didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E10 (Gen 19 destruction), E14 (Luke 17:29 destroyed them all). PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E14 (Luke 17:29) — Jesus: fire and brimstone "destroyed them all" (apollymi, aorist) — Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — apōlesen (apollymi G622 = destroyed) = destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Sodom's inhabitants ("them all" = pantas). Literal people. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: apōlesen (V-AAI-3S = aorist active indicative 3S). Standard completed action. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Jesus' didactic teaching (eschatological discourse). PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E10, E13. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E16 (Isa 34:9-15) — Edom: smoke ascending "for ever" yet animals dwell in the ruins — Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — Animals inhabiting ruins = fires have ceased = completed destruction. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Edom's inhabitants. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Standard prophetic Hebrew. The "for ever" language (netsach netsachim) co-occurs with animals dwelling in ruins, demonstrating the smoke formula describes the magnitude of completed destruction, not ongoing burning. No ambiguity. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Prophetic oracle (Isaiah). PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent; provides the OT source for Rev 14:11/19:3 smoke formula. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E23 (2 Thess 1:8-9) — "giving vengeance... everlasting destruction" — Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — olethron aiōnion (everlasting destruction, G3639 + G166) = destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel" = literal human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: dikēn (N-ASF = penalty/justice, G1349), tisousin (V-FAI-3P = shall pay, future active indicative), olethron (N-ASM = destruction, G3639), aiōnion (A-ASM = everlasting, G166). The grammar is unambiguous: the penalty they shall pay IS destruction. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle. Didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all destruction-vocabulary E-items. The explicit vengeance→destruction equation matches the OT pattern. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: katephagen (V-2AAI-3S = second aorist active indicative 3S). Completed action. No ambiguity. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Revelation = apocalyptic. FAIL. Genre is apocalyptic vision.
  • Step 3 Reclassification Check:
  • RC1: Genre is apocalyptic. However, the verb katephagen (devoured) is not symbolic vocabulary requiring special interpretation — it is standard destruction vocabulary used throughout Scripture (Nah 1:10 akal; Deut 32:42 akal; Heb 10:27 katesthiō). The action described (fire devours) is consistent with literal destruction.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: In an apocalyptic vision, fire from heaven devours the human nations. The destruction vocabulary (devoured, aorist) is consistent with all other biblical vengeance-outcome vocabulary.
  • RC3: Re-enter V1: devoured = destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails (apocalyptic). Corrected observation retains destruction vocabulary. Classification: Cond. stands (with genre caveat noted).

E32 (Psa 103:9) — "He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever" — Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "not always" (lo lanetsach), "not forever" (lo l'olam) applied to divine anger = denial of perpetual wrath. This supports the conditionalist position that punishment terminates. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): God (YHWH). Statement about divine character. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: lo (Neg) + lanetsach (Prep + Noun.ms.Abs = to perpetuity) + yariv (Verb.Qal.Impf.3ms = contend); welo (and not) + l'olam (Prep + Noun.ms.Abs = to eternity) + yittor (Verb.Qal.Impf.3ms = keep anger). Double negative with two distinct duration terms. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Psalm — wisdom/praise poetry. Didactic-equivalent. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E33 (Isa 57:16), E34 (Mic 7:18). PASS.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "found no more at all" (ou mē heurethē eti) ×5 = cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Babylon = symbolic entity. FAIL.
  • Step 3 Reclassification Check:
  • RC1: Subject is symbolic Babylon, not a literal human being.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: A symbolic entity is described with fivefold cessation language. The vocabulary is destruction, not torment.
  • RC3: Re-enter V1: "no more at all" = cessation/destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Result: Gate 1 fails (symbolic subject). Corrected observation retains cessation vocabulary. Classification: Cond. stands (with subject caveat).

Historical Vengeance Items Classified Neutral

The following E-items report historical vengeance outcomes. They are factual observations of what the text says happened — the outcome vocabulary is destruction in each case. However, as individual historical events they do not directly make eschatological claims. The conditionalist-direction significance of these items is captured at N-tier (N1: the cross-biblical pattern that every vengeance = destruction).

  • E1 (Num 31:2,7,10) — Midianites: slew, burned cities
  • E2 (2 Kgs 9:7,33,35) — Jezebel: consumed, nothing left
  • E4 (Jer 51:36-37) — Babylon: heaps, without inhabitant
  • E5 (Jer 50:40) — Babylon: overthrown like Sodom
  • E7 (Nah 1:8,10) — Nineveh: utter end, devoured as stubble
  • E8 (Nah 1:9) — Affliction shall not rise again
  • E9 (Isa 1:24,28,31) — Enemies: consumed, burn together
  • E18 (Deut 32:42) — Sword shall devour flesh
  • E37 (Isa 13:8-9) — Pangs/writhing → destroy sinners
  • E38 (Isa 13:19) — Babylon overthrown like Sodom
  • E39 (Zeph 1:15,18) — Trouble/distress → devoured, speedy riddance
  • E45 (Acts 7:24) — Moses smiting the Egyptian
