Question

What does the Bible teach about divine vengeance? How is God's vengeance executed across Scripture, and what is the consistent outcome? How does the martyrs' cry for vengeance (Rev 6:10) get answered (Rev 19:2), and what does the answer reveal about the nature of final judgment? Does biblical vengeance support ongoing torment or completed destruction? Additionally: What is the OT pattern for how affliction/torment vocabulary relates to destruction vocabulary?

G1556 — ekdikeō

Occurrences: 6

Relevance: Central verb for the vindication arc: present tense in Rev 6:10 (unresolved) → aorist in Rev 19:2 (completed). All 6 occurrences are active voice. Primary Hebrew source: naqam H5358 (22 LXX co-occurrences, PMI 8.04).

G1557 — ekdikēsis

Occurrences: 9

Relevance: The noun form of the vindication concept. Used in 2 Thess 1:8 (vengeance → destruction), Heb 10:30 (quoting Deut 32:35), Luke 18:7-8 (God will avenge speedily). Hebrew source: neqamah H5360 (19 LXX co-occurrences, PMI 26.61).

G1558 — ekdikos

Occurrences: 2

Relevance: Adjective completing the ekdik- family. Rom 13:4: civil authority as God's avenger. 1 Thess 4:6: the Lord IS the avenger. Establishes God's role as the one who executes vengeance.

H5358 — naqam (verb)

Occurrences: 44

Relevance: The primary Hebrew vengeance verb. Triple noqem (Qal participle) in Nah 1:2 = densest concentration in OT. Jeremiah's Hithpael formula 'shall not my soul be avenged?' (5:9, 5:29, 9:8). Maps to G1556 ekdikeō in LXX (22 co-occurrences).

H5359 — naqam (noun)

Occurrences: 17

Relevance: Appears in the 'day of vengeance' formula (yom naqam: Isa 34:8, 61:2, 63:4). Deut 32:35,41,43: the Song of Moses vengeance template. In Deut 32:43, paired with dam (blood) = 'he will avenge the blood of his servants' — quoted in Rev 19:2.

H5360 — neqamah

Occurrences: 28

Relevance: Feminine counterpart completing the n-q-m family. Used in Jer 51:6 (time of the LORD's vengeance), Ezek 25:12,15 (hostile human vengeance). Maps to ekdikēsis G1557 in LXX (19 co-occurrences, PMI 8.88). Combined n-q-m family: 76 OT occurrences.

G928 — basanizō

Occurrences: 12

Relevance: Semantic range spans physical illness (Matt 8:6), toil (Matt 14:24), moral distress (2 Pet 2:8), and eschatological torment (Rev 14:10, 20:10). In judgment contexts, confined to Revelation's apocalyptic framework or demonic speech (Matt 8:29). Rev 20:10 basanisthēsontai (future passive) is the ONLY future-tense verb in the Rev 20:9-15 aorist chain.

G929 — basanismos

Occurrences: 6

Relevance: All 6 occurrences exclusively in Revelation. Time-bounded in 4 of 6 uses. Rev 18:7,10,15: Babylon's torment IS her destruction process (in one day/one hour). Rev 14:11: smoke of torment — aftermath formula from Isa 34:10.

H6869 — tsarah

Occurrences: 79

Relevance: Key OT process vocabulary. Nah 1:9: 'affliction (tsarah) shall not rise up the second time' — because the subjects are consumed (v.10). Zeph 1:15: 'a day of trouble (tsarah) and distress' — outcome in v.18 is devoured (akal). Tsarah describes the experience DURING judgment; destruction vocabulary describes the outcome.

H2479 — chalchalah

Occurrences: 4

Relevance: Process vocabulary in Ezek 30:4,9,16. 'Great pain shall be in Ethiopia WHEN the slain shall fall' (Ezek 30:4) — pain accompanies killing; it does not replace it. Pain is the process; death is the outcome.

H2342 — chuwl

Occurrences: 70

Relevance: Process vocabulary in Isa 13:8: yechilun (Qal.Impf = they shall writhe in pain) — labor-pain metaphor for judgment. The writhing (v.8) precedes the destroying (shamad, v.9). Pain is the process; destruction is the outcome.

H3615 — kalah

Occurrences: 258

Relevance: Outcome vocabulary in Nah 1:8-9: kalah = utter end/destruction. In Zeph 1:18: 'speedy riddance' (kalah). The word means total completion/termination. When applied to judgment, it means the judgment reaches its complete end — the subjects are finished/consumed.

H8045 — shamad

Occurrences: 101

Relevance: Outcome vocabulary in Isa 13:9: yashmid (Hiphil.Impf = he shall destroy/exterminate). Almost exclusively causative Hiphil (69 of 91 forms) — inherently transitive: destruction done TO someone. LXX maps to apollymi G622 (23 co-occurrences). The process→outcome chain: chuwl (writhe, v.8) → shamad (destroy, v.9).

H398 — akal

Occurrences: 947

Relevance: Outcome vocabulary: Nah 1:10 (devoured as stubble), Deut 32:42 (sword shall devour flesh), Zeph 1:18 (whole land devoured). When paired with vengeance vocabulary, akal consistently describes total consumption. The sword devours — not torments.

G622 — apollymi

Occurrences: 102

Relevance: Primary NT destruction verb. Luke 17:29: Jesus on Sodom — 'destroyed (apōlesen) them all.' The perish/save antithesis (John 3:16, 2 Pet 3:9) frames apollymi as the opposite of eternal life. Hebrew source: abad H6 (141 LXX co-occurrences). Absent from Revelation — replaced by cognate apoleia G684.

G3639 — olethros

Occurrences: 4

Relevance: Exclusively Pauline. 2 Thess 1:9: 'everlasting destruction (olethros aiōnion)' = the penalty for those who do not know God. This verse explicitly links ekdikēsis (vengeance, v.8) with olethros (destruction, v.9). Vengeance = destruction.

G684 — apoleia

Occurrences: 20

Relevance: The noun form of apollymi. Used for 'son of perdition' (John 17:12, 2 Thess 2:3), the beast 'goeth into perdition' (Rev 17:8,11), 'broad way that leadeth to destruction' (Matt 7:13). Names both the event and state of ruin.

G2719 — katesthiō

Occurrences: 20

Relevance: Rev 20:9: katephagen (second aorist active indicative 3S = devoured) — fire came down and devoured them. Applied to humans at final judgment. Total, irreversible consumption. Part of the 4-aorist chain: went up, surrounded, fire came down, devoured.

G2618 — katakaiō

Occurrences: 11

Relevance: Rev 18:8: Babylon 'shall be utterly burned (katakaiō).' Matt 3:12/Luke 3:17: chaff burned up with unquenchable fire. Jesus' interpretive verb for the tares: katakaio (Matt 13:40). The kata- prefix indicates completeness: burned DOWN, consumed.

G2920 — krisis

Occurrences: 47

Relevance: Rev 19:2: kriseis (judgments) — 'true and righteous are his judgments.' The judicial framework for divine vengeance. In Louw-Nida domain 38.001 (Punish), krisis neighbors ekdikēsis, basanizō, dikē, kolasis.

G3405 — misthapodosia

Occurrences: 3

Relevance: Heb 2:2: 'every transgression received a just (endikos) recompence (misthapodosia).' The word emphasizes proportionality — the recompense is precisely calibrated to the offense. Supports graduated, measured punishment.

G1349 — dikē

Occurrences: 4

Relevance: Root of the entire dik- family (dikaios, dikaiosynē, ekdikeō, ekdikēsis, ekdikos). Jude 1:7: dikēn hypechousai = 'suffering the penalty/vengeance.' 2 Thess 1:9: dikēn tisousin olethron = 'shall pay the penalty of destruction.' Both link dikē to destruction, not ongoing torment.
