CLASSIFICATIONS.md — Audit Trail for etc7-08-aionios-forever-in-nt

This file contains the full Decision Tree walkthrough for every E-item classified Cond. or ECT and every N-item. Items classified Neutral at E-tier are not walked through here (they passed V1=NO and V2=NO, producing Neutral by default).

E-Item Classifications

E1 (Rom 16:25) -- "The mystery was kept secret in aionios times -- a period that has ended" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- The passage does not directly use destruction/cessation vocabulary applied to the wicked. V2 -- No conscious-torment vocabulary. However, this item is not about the fate of the wicked directly; it is about aionios referring to a period that ended. Both V1 and V2 = NO.
  • Reclassification: This item describes aionios referring to past time that has ended. It does not use destruction or torment vocabulary. Neither V1 nor V2 applies.
  • Result: Classification revised to Neutral. The observation that aionios refers to past time is a factual textual observation both sides acknowledge.

Final: E1 reclassified to Neutral.

E2 (2 Tim 1:9) -- "God's grace given before aionios times -- aionios refers to past time" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 = NO (no destruction vocabulary). V2 = NO (no torment vocabulary).
  • Result: Neither vocabulary applies. This is a factual observation about aionios referring to past time.
  • Result: Classification revised to Neutral.

Final: E2 reclassified to Neutral.

E3 (Tit 1:2) -- "Aionios appears twice in one verse: for eternal life (future) and before aionios times (past)" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 = NO. V2 = NO.
  • Result: This is a grammatical observation about the same adjective having different temporal scopes. Neither destruction nor torment vocabulary.
  • Result: Classification revised to Neutral.

Final: E3 reclassified to Neutral.

E4 (Jude 1:6-7) -- "Jude uses aidios for angelic chains (v.6) but aionios for Sodom's fire (v.7) in adjacent verses" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 = NO directly (the observation is about word choice, not about destruction vocabulary applied to wicked). V2 = NO.
  • Result: This is a textual observation about an author's word selection. Both ECT and conditionalist scholars can verify Jude uses different words. Neither destruction nor torment vocabulary is the focus.
  • Result: Classification revised to Neutral.

Final: E4 reclassified to Neutral.

E5 (2 Thess 1:9) -- "The wicked shall be punished with everlasting destruction (olethron aionion)" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "destruction" (olethros) applied to the wicked. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical subject is "them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel" (2 Thess 1:8) -- literal human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Greek parsing from raw data: olethron (G3639, Acc Sg M) aionion (G166, Acc Sg M). Olethros = "destruction/ruin." The grammar unambiguously supports the reading: the penalty is destruction, modified by aionios. The phrase "apo prosopou tou kyriou" ("from the presence of the Lord") is a prepositional phrase; its attachment is debated (source of destruction vs. separation from), but the core reading -- the penalty is destruction -- is grammatically unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle, didactic teaching about eschatological judgment. Didactic prose. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E-items using destruction vocabulary: Rom 6:23 (wages = death), Phil 3:19 (end = destruction), Matt 10:28 (destroy soul and body). No conflicting E-item states the wicked receive something other than destruction from Paul. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E5 = Cond.

E6 (Matt 25:46a) -- "These shall go away into everlasting punishment (kolasin aionion)" -- Classified: Neutral

This item states what the text says: the wicked go into kolasin aionion. Both sides accept this is what the verse says. The positional question (whether kolasis means ongoing torment or permanent punitive result) is an interpretive question, making any positional classification an inference.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "punishment" (kolasis) is a penalty word, not strictly destruction vocabulary. V2 -- kolasis is not specifically conscious-torment vocabulary (the torment word is basanizo). Neither keyword list is a clean match.
  • Both V1 and V2 = NO in strict terms. Kolasis is a penalty word that could describe either a destructive penalty or an ongoing penalty depending on interpretation.
  • Result: Neutral. The text says what it says; what kolasis means in this context is the subject of inference.

Final: E6 = Neutral.

E7 (John 3:16) -- "Whosoever believeth should not perish (apollytai) but have everlasting life" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "perish" (apollymi) applied to those who do not believe. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Whosoever" -- generic humanity. Literal human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): apollytai (G622, Aor Mid Subj 3S) = "might perish." Grammar is unambiguous: the alternative to having eternal life is perishing. No alternative parsing available. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Jesus's direct speech in John's Gospel, didactic teaching to Nicodemus. Didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Rom 6:23 (death vs. life), Matt 7:13 (destruction vs. life), Gal 6:8 (corruption vs. life). No conflicting E-item. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E7 = Cond.

E8 (Rom 6:23) -- "The wages of sin is death; the gift of God is eternal life" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "death" (thanatos) as the wages of sin. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Generic statement about sin and its consequence. Applies to literal human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): thanatos (G2288, Nom Sg M) = "death." zoe aionios (G2222 Nom Sg F + G166 Nom Sg F) = "eternal life." Charisma (G5486, "gift") vs. opsonia (G3800, "wages"). Grammar is unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle, didactic theological statement. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with John 3:16, Gal 6:8, Matt 7:13-14. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E8 = Cond.

E9 (Jude 1:7 / 2 Pet 2:6) -- "Sodom suffered eternal fire (pyros aioniou) yet became ashes" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- 2 Pet 2:6 says "turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes." Ashes = destruction/cessation vocabulary applied to the subject of "eternal fire." YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and their inhabitants. Historical human beings and their cities. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): pyros (G4442, Gen Sg N) aioniou (G166, Gen Sg N) = "of eternal fire." Tephrosas (2 Pet 2:6) = "having turned to ashes" (aorist active participle). Grammar unambiguously supports: the eternal fire produced ashes. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Jude's epistle (didactic) and 2 Peter (didactic). Both are epistolary teaching. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with the fire-brimstone paradigm (Gen 19:24-28). Consistent with the observation that "eternal fire" does not require endless burning. No conflicting E-item. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E9 = Cond.

E10 (Matt 10:28) -- "God can destroy both soul and body in gehenna" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "destroy" (apollymi) applied to soul and body in gehenna. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Soul and body" of human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): apolesai (G622, Aor Act Inf) = "to destroy." Both psyche (soul) and soma (body) are direct objects. Grammar unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Jesus's direct teaching in the Synoptic Gospels, didactic instruction to disciples. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with John 3:16 (perish), Rom 6:23 (death). PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E10 = Cond.

E11 (Rev 20:9) -- "Fire from God devoured them" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "devoured" (katephagen) = destruction vocabulary. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Gog and Magog" armies. In Revelation's apocalyptic framework, these are prophetically typological. FAIL -- subject is a prophetic type/figure (nations used as prophetic type).
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Subject is prophetic nations in an apocalyptic vision (Rev 20:8-9).
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, prophetic nations are devoured by fire from God."
  • RC3: Re-enter V1/V2: destruction vocabulary in an apocalyptic vision does not constitute didactic teaching about individual human fate. Neither V1 nor V2 applies to the corrected observation.
  • Result: Classification revised to Neutral.

Final: E11 reclassified to Neutral.

E12 (Rev 20:10) -- "Devil, beast, false prophet tormented for ever and ever" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- "tormented" (basanisthesontai) = conscious-torment vocabulary. YES. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The devil (non-human supernatural being), the beast (symbolic entity, Rev 17:8), the false prophet (symbolic entity = second beast of Rev 13:11-17). FAIL -- none of the three is a literal human being.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: All three subjects are non-human/symbolic entities.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "Non-human and symbolic entities are depicted as tormented in an apocalyptic vision."
  • RC3: Re-enter V1/V2: torment of non-human/symbolic entities in a vision does not constitute evidence about literal human fate. Neither applies.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral.

Final: E12 = Neutral.

E13 (Rev 14:11) -- "Smoke of their torment ascends for ever and ever" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- "torment" (basanismos) = conscious-torment vocabulary. YES. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Those who worship the beast and his image" -- described within Revelation's symbolic framework. These are human worshipers, but identified by their relationship to symbolic entities.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): The SMOKE ascends (kapnos anabainei), not the persons. The grammar describes ascending smoke -- evidence of completed burning (cf. Gen 19:28).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision within Revelation. FAIL -- apocalyptic genre.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Passage is apocalyptic genre. Smoke ascending "for ever" echoes Isa 34:10 (ended judgment).
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, ascending smoke from torment is described using OT language for completed judgments."
  • RC3: Re-enter V1/V2: corrected observation is a genre-appropriate reading that does not contain either destruction or torment vocabulary applicable to didactic teaching about human fate.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral.

Final: E13 = Neutral.

E14 (Rev 19:3) -- "Her smoke rose up for ever and ever" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: The subject is symbolic Babylon (Rev 17:5 "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT").
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Symbolic entity. FAIL.
  • Result: Neutral. Symbolic entity in apocalyptic vision.

Final: E14 = Neutral.

E15 (Rev 20:14 / 21:8) -- "Lake of fire is the second death" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "death" (thanatos) vocabulary. YES. But this is a definitional statement ("this IS the second death"), not a statement about the wicked specifically using destruction vocabulary.
  • Both sides accept the lake of fire is called "the second death." The positional implication (what "second death" means) is debated.
  • Result: Neutral.

Final: E15 = Neutral.

E16 (Rev 19:20-21) -- "Beast/false prophet cast alive; humans slain" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Textual observation about different vocabulary for different subjects. Both sides can verify the different verbs.
  • Result: Neutral.

Final: E16 = Neutral.

E17 (Gal 6:8) -- "Sows to flesh reaps corruption; sows to Spirit reaps life everlasting" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "corruption" (phthora, G5356) = decay/dissolution applied to those who sow to the flesh. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Generic humanity. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): phthora = corruption/decay. zoen aionion = life everlasting. Grammar unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle, didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Rom 6:23 (death vs. life), John 3:16 (perish vs. life). PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E17 = Cond.

E18 (1 John 3:15) -- "No murderer hath eternal life abiding in him" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: This states the absence of eternal life in murderers. It uses "life" vocabulary in the negative. V1 = not destruction vocabulary per se; V2 = NO. The observation is about who does NOT have eternal life.
  • Both sides accept the text says murderers do not have eternal life. The positional implication (whether this means they have no eternal existence at all) requires interpretation.
  • Result: Classification revised to Neutral. The text states what it states; both sides accept this textual fact.

Final: E18 reclassified to Neutral.

E19 (Matt 7:13-14) -- "Broad way leads to destruction; narrow way leads to life" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "destruction" (apoleia) applied to those on the broad way. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Generic humanity. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): apoleia (G684) = destruction/perdition. Grammar unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Jesus's direct teaching, Sermon on the Mount. Didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with John 3:16, Rom 6:23. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E19 = Cond.

E20 (Phil 3:19) -- "Whose end is destruction" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "destruction" (apoleia). YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Enemies of the cross" -- literal human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): telos (end/goal) + apoleia (destruction). Unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle, didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Matt 7:13, Rom 6:23. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E20 = Cond.

E21 (Mal 4:1) -- "The day shall burn them up; leave neither root nor branch" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "burn them up," "leave neither root nor branch" = destruction vocabulary. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "All the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly" -- literal human beings. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Hebrew la-hat (to consume/burn up), used with "stubble" imagery. Unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Prophetic direct speech ("saith the LORD of hosts"). Didactic/prophetic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Mal 4:3 (ashes), Psa 37:10 (wicked shall not be). PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E21 = Cond.

E22 (Mal 4:3) -- "Wicked shall be ashes under the soles of your feet" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "ashes" = destruction/cessation vocabulary. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Gates: Subject = the wicked (human). Grammar = unambiguous. Genre = prophetic direct speech. Harmony = consistent.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E22 = Cond.

E23 (Psa 37:10) -- "The wicked shall not be" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "shall not be" = cessation vocabulary. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Gates: Subject = the wicked (human). Grammar = "eyn" (there is not) applied to the wicked. Genre = wisdom psalm, didactic. Harmony = consistent with Mal 4:1-3, Oba 1:16.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E23 = Cond.

E24 (Oba 1:16) -- "They shall be as though they had not been" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "as though they had not been" = cessation. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Gates: Subject = "all the heathen" (generic wicked). Grammar = ke-lo hayu ("as though they had not been"). Genre = prophetic direct speech. Harmony = consistent.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E24 = Cond.

E25 (Ezek 28:18-19) -- "I will bring thee to ashes; never shalt thou be any more" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "ashes" and "never... any more" = cessation. YES. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The being behind the king of Tyre. The lamentation addresses an earthly king but uses covering cherub imagery (v.14,16) widely understood as extending to the spiritual being (Satan). The subject has debate. However, even if taken as the king of Tyre, it is a literal being. PASS (with note: subject identification debated).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): epher ("ashes") + eynekha ad-owlam ("you are no more to perpetuity"). Unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Prophetic lamentation. Direct prophetic speech. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Creates tension with Rev 20:10 (same being "tormented for ever and ever"). However, Rev 20:10 is apocalyptic (Gate 3 fails there). Ezek 28 is clearer (direct prophetic speech vs. apocalyptic vision). SIS: the clearer passage (Ezek 28, prophetic direct speech) governs the less clear (Rev 20:10, apocalyptic). PASS after SIS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

Final: E25 = Cond.

E26 (Isa 34:10) -- "Smoke shall go up for ever; from generation to generation it shall lie waste" -- Classified: Neutral

  • This is an OT observation about olam/netsach language for a judgment that ended. Both sides can verify that Edom's judgment ended. The observation itself is not about the fate of the wicked in the final judgment.
  • Result: Neutral (factual observation about OT "forever" language).

Final: E26 = Neutral.

N-Item Classifications

N1 -- "Aionios does not inherently mean 'eternal/endless' because it refers to past time that has ended" -- Based on: E1, E2, E3 -- Classified: Cond.

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar necessarily agree that aionios refers to past time in Rom 16:25, 2 Tim 1:9, and Tit 1:2? YES -- this is a grammatical fact both sides acknowledge. The debate is whether past-time use means the word lacks inherent "endless" force. The CONCLUSION drawn (does not inherently mean eternal/endless) requires interpretation of what the past-time uses imply for the word's semantics. NO -- an ECT scholar could argue these are idiomatic uses without affecting the word's standard meaning.
  • N-Test 1: FAIL. An ECT scholar would not necessarily agree that past-time uses prove the word lacks inherent "endless" meaning.
  • Result: Reclassified as I-tier. This is an inference from the E-items, not an unavoidable conclusion.

Final: N1 reclassified to I-A (Cond.) -- text-derived, aligns with E/N, uses only criterion #5 (systematizing past-time E-items into a semantic conclusion).

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree that the LXX chose aionios over aidios for olam? YES -- this is a verifiable translation fact.
  • N-Test 2: Is the conclusion (they understood olam as age-pertaining) the only possible conclusion? NO -- an ECT scholar could argue the LXX translators simply used aionios as their standard word for olam because aidios was rare and literary, not because of semantic distinction. The conclusion about WHAT the choice indicates requires interpretation.
  • N-Test 2: FAIL.
  • Result: The factual observation (LXX chose aionios, not aidios) is E-tier. The interpretation (this indicates age-pertaining semantics) is an inference.

Final: N2 split. The factual observation remains at E-tier (Neutral). The interpretive conclusion reclassified to I-A (Cond.).

N3 -- "Aidios and aionios are not synonymous" -- Based on: E298, E301, E302 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree these are distinct words? YES -- they have different Strong's numbers, different etymologies, and Jude uses both in adjacent verses.
  • N-Test 2: Is the conclusion (not synonymous) the only possible conclusion? Most scholars, regardless of position, would agree they are distinct lexical items. But "not synonymous" could mean "completely different semantic ranges" or merely "slightly different register/style." The conclusion "not synonymous" at the broad level is agreed.
  • N-Test 3: Does this add anything beyond the E-items? The E-items state different etymologies and different usage. "Not synonymous" follows from different etymologies.
  • All three: PASS.
  • Proceed to Tree 3:
  • V1 = NO, V2 = NO. No destruction or torment vocabulary.
  • Result: Neutral. Both sides agree the words are distinct.

Final: N3 = Neutral.

N4 -- "In Hebrews, aionios describes permanent results of completed acts (redemption obtained once, salvation authored, judgment rendered)" -- Based on: E311-E313, E310 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree that eternal redemption (Heb 9:12) was obtained once, that eternal salvation (Heb 5:9) was authored, and that eternal judgment (Heb 6:2) is a permanent verdict? YES -- the grammar (aorist participles, ephapax) confirms these are completed acts. Both sides agree Hebrews describes completed acts with permanent results.
  • N-Test 2: Is this the only possible reading? YES -- the aorist participles and ephapax make the "completed act" reading grammatically necessary.
  • N-Test 3: Does this add anything beyond the E-items? No -- it restates what the Hebrews passages themselves say.
  • All three: PASS.
  • Proceed to Tree 3:
  • V1 = NO, V2 = NO. This is a pattern observation, not destruction or torment vocabulary.
  • Result: Neutral. Both sides agree on the Hebrews grammar.

Final: N4 = Neutral.

N5 -- "The 'ages of ages' formula in judgment contexts (Rev 14:11; 19:3; 20:10) echoes OT olam smoke language for completed judgments" -- Based on: E315, E316, E26 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree Rev 14:11 echoes Isa 34:10? The verbal parallel is verifiable ("smoke shall go up for ever"). YES on the verbal echo.
  • N-Test 2: Is the conclusion (these are completed judgments) the only possible reading? NO -- an ECT scholar could argue the OT judgment language is used but the NT application transcends the OT precedent. The conclusion that the NT application means completed judgment requires choosing between readings.
  • N-Test 2: FAIL.
  • Result: The verbal echo is a factual observation (E-tier). The interpretive conclusion (= completed judgments) is an inference.

Final: N5 reclassified to I-B (competing evidence). The verbal echo between Rev 14:11 and Isa 34:10 is an E-item (Neutral). The conclusion that this means completed judgment vs. endless torment has E/N support on both sides.

I-Item Classifications

I1 -- "Aionios inherently means 'eternal/endless' in all NT contexts" -- Type: I-B -- Classified: ECT

  • Source test: Components from E/N tables (past-time uses, etymology, distribution data). YES = text-derived.
  • Direction test: This claim requires the past-time uses (E1-E3) to mean something other than their plain reading (that aionios can refer to ended periods). YES = conflicts. → I-B.
  • FOR: The ~43x "eternal life" collocations where aionios clearly means genuinely eternal; the divine-attribute uses (Rom 16:26 "everlasting God").
  • AGAINST: E1 (past-time Rom 16:25), E2 (past-time 2 Tim 1:9), E3 (Tit 1:2 dual-direction), E4 (aidios/aionios distinction), Phm 1:15 (aionios = permanently in human context), LXX data (aionios translates ended olam institutions).
  • Result: Type I-B confirmed. Position: ECT.

I2 -- "Matt 25:46 symmetry requires identical duration for punishment and life" -- Type: I-B -- Classified: ECT

  • Source test: Based on E6 (kolasin aionion // zoen aionion -- identical grammar). YES = text-derived.
  • Direction test: This claim requires aionios to carry identical semantic force in both instances. But E3 (Tit 1:2) shows same adjective, same verse, different temporal scopes. Requires E3 to mean something other than what it says. YES = conflicts. → I-B.
  • FOR: E6 (identical grammatical construction in Matt 25:46).
  • AGAINST: E3 (Tit 1:2 precedent), Dan 12:2 (olam symmetry with nature-of-subject principle), Hebrews pattern (aionios + result-noun = permanent result).
  • Result: Type I-B confirmed. Position: ECT.

I3 -- "'Ages of ages' in Rev 14:11 and 20:10 describes literal endless torment of human wicked" -- Type: I-B -- Classified: ECT

  • Source test: Based on E13, E12 (ages-of-ages judgment passages). YES = text-derived.
  • Direction test: Requires E12's gate failures (non-human subjects, apocalyptic genre) to be overridden. Requires E26 (Isa 34:10 precedent) to not apply. YES = conflicts. → I-B.
  • FOR: The language "tormented day and night for ever and ever" (Rev 20:10) appears to describe ongoing conscious torment.
  • AGAINST: E12 gate failures (non-human/symbolic subjects), E13 gate failure (apocalyptic genre), E26 (OT precedent for ended "forever" judgments), E25 (Ezek 28:18-19 same being = ashes/no more), E16 (different vocabulary for humans vs. symbolic entities in Rev 19-20).
  • Result: Type I-B confirmed. Position: ECT.

I4 -- "Aionios means 'pertaining to the age(s)' with duration determined by the nature of the subject" -- Type: I-A -- Classified: Cond.

  • Source test: All components from E/N tables (etymology, past-time uses, LXX data, aidios distinction, Hebrews pattern, Phm 1:15). YES = text-derived.
  • Direction test: Does not require any E/N statement to mean something other than its plain value. NO = aligns. → I-A.
  • Consistency check: Requires only criterion #5 (systematizing multiple E items into a broader semantic claim). Confirmed I-A.
  • Result: Type I-A confirmed. Position: Cond.

I5 -- "The Hebrews 'permanent result' pattern means 'eternal punishment' (Matt 25:46) = permanent result of completed punitive act, not ongoing process" -- Type: I-A -- Classified: Cond.

  • Source test: Based on N4 (Hebrews pattern) and E6 (Matt 25:46 text). YES = text-derived.
  • Direction test: Aligns with E/N items. NO = aligns. → I-A.
  • Consistency check: Requires criterion #5 (applying the Hebrews pattern to Matt 25:46). Confirmed I-A.
  • Result: Type I-A confirmed. Position: Cond.

I6 -- "The wicked receive eternal conscious existence for the purpose of torment" -- Type: I-D -- Classified: ECT

  • Source test: The claim that the wicked receive eternal existence is not found in any E/N item. Scripture says God ALONE has immortality (1 Tim 6:16) and believers must PUT ON immortality (1 Cor 15:53). The wicked receiving immortality is never stated. NO = external.
  • Direction test: This overrides the E-items about God alone having immortality and believers putting it on. YES = conflicts. → I-D.
  • Result: Type I-D confirmed. Position: ECT.

I7 -- "Basanizo/basanismos applied to human final fate" -- Type: I-D -- Classified: ECT

  • Source test: No E/N item states basanizo is used for generic human final fate. E383 states no epistle, Gospel, or OT passage uses basanizo for human final fate. NO = external.
  • Direction test: Overrides E383. YES = conflicts. → I-D.
  • Result: Type I-D confirmed. Position: ECT.

I8 -- "The perish-vs-life and death-vs-life contrasts in John 3:16, Rom 6:23, and Gal 6:8 establish that the alternative to eternal life is cessation, not alternative eternal existence" -- Type: I-A -- Classified: Cond.
