All positional E-items (Cond. or ECT) and all N-items receive a full Tree 3 or Tree 4 walkthrough with tool-verified parsing data.
E-Item Classifications¶
E1 (Rev 20:9) -- "fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them" -- Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "devoured" (katephagen, G2719) applied to human armies. Destruction/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical object (autous, P-APM, "them") refers to the human armies of Gog/Magog described in vv.8-9a. Literal human beings. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms katephagen (G2719, katesthio, V-2AAI-3S, Aorist Active Indicative). The verb means "to eat down/devour/consume." Aorist tense presents the devouring as a completed bounded event. No alternative parsing available. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision (Revelation). FAIL. Genre is apocalyptic.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached (Gate 3 failed).
- Step 3 Reclassification:
- RC1: Genre is apocalyptic vision. The observation is within an apocalyptic framework.
- RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, fire from heaven devours human armies (katephagen, destruction verb)."
- RC3: Re-enter Step 1: The corrected observation still contains destruction vocabulary (devoured) applied to human subjects within the vision. V1 applies. However, the apocalyptic genre means this depicts what the seer saw, not didactic teaching. The destruction vocabulary remains.
- Result: Gate 3 fails (apocalyptic). The vocabulary is destruction, but the genre qualifies the directness. Reclassified: Neutral (the text uses destruction vocabulary in an apocalyptic vision; the vocabulary choice is a factual observation both sides can acknowledge).
Note: The vocabulary differentiation between v.9 (devoured/humans) and v.10 (tormented/non-human) is itself a Neutral E-item (E3) — a factual observation about the text's word choices.
E2 (Rev 20:14) -- "This is the second death" (lake of fire identified as thanatos, not basanismos) -- Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "death" (thanatos, G2288) applied to the fate of humans cast into the lake of fire. Death/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The predicate nominative identifies the lake of fire (destination of human wicked per v.15) as "the second death." The subjects who receive this fate are humans not in the book of life. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms: houtos (D-NSM) ho thanatos (G2288, N-NSM) ho deuteros (G1208, A-NSM) estin (G1510, V-PAI-3S), he limne (G3041, N-NSF) tou pyros (G4442, N-GSN). Predicate nominative identification formula. The identification word is thanatos (death), confirmed by parser. No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision (Revelation). FAIL. Genre is apocalyptic.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached (Gate 3 failed).
- Step 3 Reclassification:
- RC1: Genre is apocalyptic. The identification formula is within a vision.
- RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, the text identifies the lake of fire as 'the second death' (thanatos) using a predicate nominative formula."
- RC3: The corrected observation notes the text's self-identification. The identification formula is Revelation's own self-interpreting mechanism (used in Rev 1:20, 5:8, 17:9, 17:15, 17:18). Both sides accept that the text calls it "the second death." The vocabulary choice (thanatos rather than basanismos) is a factual observation.
- Result: Gate 3 fails (apocalyptic). Reclassified: Neutral (the text's self-identification of the lake of fire as "the second death" is a factual observation both sides acknowledge, even while disagreeing about what "the second death" entails).
E3 (Rev 20:9-10) -- "Rev 20:9 uses katephagen (devoured) for human armies; Rev 20:10 uses basanisthesontai (tormented) for devil/beast/false prophet" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: Both V1 (devoured) and V2 (tormented) apply — but to different subjects. Neither vocabulary applies uniformly to the fate of human wicked. Both NO for a unified positional reading. NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands. This is a factual observation about the text's vocabulary choices that both sides must accept.
E4 (Rev 20:10) -- "The devil, beast, and false prophet shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- "tormented" (basanisthesontai, G928) applied to the devil, beast, and false prophet. Conscious-ongoing-existence vocabulary. Candidate: ECT.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical subjects are: ho diabolos (the devil — supernatural spirit being), to therion (the beast — 7 heads, 10 horns, composite entity; Rev 17:8-11 decodes as political-religious system), ho pseudoprophetes (the false prophet — symbolic entity = earth beast of Rev 13:11-17). NONE is a literal human being. FAIL. Subject is symbolic/non-human for all three.
- Step 3 Reclassification:
- RC1: All three subjects are non-human/symbolic entities (devil = supernatural spirit, beast = decoded as political system, false prophet = symbolic figure).
- RC2: Corrected observation: "Three non-human/symbolic entities are described as tormented in the lake of fire."
- RC3: The corrected observation describes torment applied to non-human entities. This does not constitute evidence about HUMAN fate. V2 vocabulary applies to non-human subjects — neither V1 nor V2 is relevant to human fate.
- Result: Gate 1 fails (subjects are not literal human beings). Classification: Neutral (describes non-human entities; does not establish human experience in the lake of fire).
E5 (Isa 66:24) -- "They shall look upon the carcases (peger) of the men that have transgressed" -- Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "carcases" (peger, H6297) = dead bodies/corpses. Death/cessation vocabulary (the subjects are dead). Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical subject being viewed is pigrei (Noun.mp.Cst, corpses of) ha-anashim (Noun.mp.Abs, the men) ha-posh'im (Verb.Qal.Ptcp.mp.Abs, the transgressing). The transgressors are literal human beings (men who transgressed). PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms: pigrei (peger, Noun.mp.Cst, "corpses of") — construct state, plural. Peger means dead body/corpse in ALL 24 OT occurrences. The parser gives lemma peger with gloss "corpse." No alternative parsing for peger. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Direct-speech prophecy ("saith the LORD," v.23). Didactic. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all other E-items — no E-item states that humans are alive and conscious after judgment. Other cessation E-items (Rom 2:12, 2 Thess 1:9, Heb 10:27) describe destruction. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E6 (Isa 66:16-17) -- "The slain of the LORD shall be many" / transgressors "consumed together, saith the LORD" -- Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "slain" (chalalim, pierced/slain) and "consumed together" (yasufu from suph, "end/cease"). Destruction/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The subjects are human transgressors (those who sanctify themselves in the gardens, eat swine's flesh, etc.). Literal human beings. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms v.17: yasufu (suph/soph, Verb.Qal.Impf.3mp, "end/cease") — the transgressors shall end/cease. Yachdaw (Adv., "together"). The verb means to come to an end. No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Direct-speech prophecy ("saith the LORD" — ne'um YHWH, v.17). Didactic. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with other destruction E-items. No conflict with any E-item. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E7 (2 Thess 1:9) -- "Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction (olethron aionion)" -- Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "destruction" (olethron, G3639) = destruction/ruin. Death/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical subject (hoitines, R-NPM, "who") refers to "them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel" (v.8). Literal human beings. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms: olethron (G3639, N-ASM, Acc Sg M, "destruction") aionion (G166, A-ASM, "everlasting"). Olethros (G3639) has only 4 NT uses, ALL meaning destruction/ruin. Tisousin (G5099, V-FAI-3P, "they shall pay") — future active indicative. The verb tino means "to pay a penalty." No alternative parsing for olethros. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle — didactic prose. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all destruction E-items. Paul had basanizo available and chose olethros. No conflict with any E-item. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E8 (Heb 10:27) -- Fire "shall devour (esthiein) the adversaries" -- Classified: Cond.

- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The object of the devouring is tous hupenantious (G5227, A-APM, "the adversaries"). Human adversaries of God. Literal human beings. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms: esthiein (G2068, V-PAN, Pres Act Inf, "to eat/devour") mellontos (G3195, V-PAP-GSN, "being about to"). Esthio = to eat/consume. No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Hebrews epistle — didactic warning. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with 2 Thess 1:9 (destruction), Rom 2:12 (perish), and other destruction E-items. No conflict. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E9 (Heb 10:39) -- "draw back unto perdition (apoleia)" vs "saving of the soul" -- Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "perdition/destruction" (apoleian, G684, apoleia) = destruction/ruin. Cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The subjects are humans — the audience of the Hebrews epistle ("we," hemeis). Literal human beings. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms: apoleian (G684, N-ASF, "destruction/perdition") contrasted with peripoiesin (G4047, N-ASF, "preserving/saving") psyches (G5590, N-GSF, "of soul"). Binary: destruction vs saving. No alternative parsing. PASS.

- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms: apolountai (G622, V-FMI-3P, Fut Mid Ind, "shall perish"). Apollymi = to destroy/perish. Future middle indicative = "they shall perish." No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Pauline epistle — didactic prose. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with 2 Thess 1:9 (destruction), Heb 10:27/39, and all other destruction E-items. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E11 (Rev 20:12-13) -- "the dead were judged according to their works" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 NO (no destruction vocabulary). V2 NO (no torment vocabulary). The text describes the judgment mechanism, not its nature. NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands.
E12 (Rev 20:15) -- "whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 NO (no explicit destruction vocabulary in this verse alone). V2 NO (no torment vocabulary). The verse describes the criterion and destination but does not specify what happens there (the specification is in v.14: "the second death"). NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands.
E13 (Matt 25:46) -- "these shall go away into everlasting punishment (kolasin aionion)" -- Classified: Neutral

- Result: Classification: Neutral stands. The word kolasis denotes punishment without specifying whether the punishment is destruction or ongoing torment. Both sides dispute its meaning.
E14 (John 5:29) -- "resurrection of life" vs "resurrection of judgment (kriseos)" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 NO (krisis is not destruction vocabulary). V2 NO (krisis is not torment vocabulary). Krisis = judgment/verdict — a judicial event. NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands. Krisis describes the judgment event, not its outcome.
E15 (Dan 12:2) -- "some to shame and everlasting contempt (dera'on olam)" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1: Dera'on = abhorrence/contempt. Not unambiguously destruction vocabulary (it describes a state of being viewed, not destruction itself). V2: Not torment vocabulary. Both V1 and V2 are NO. NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands. Dera'on describes the state of being an object of revulsion. What makes the transgressors objects of revulsion (conscious shame or being dead corpses) is the disputed question. Both sides can accept the text says "everlasting contempt/abhorrence."
E16 (Matt 25:41) -- "fire prepared for the devil and his angels" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 NO (no destruction vocabulary in this statement). V2 NO (no torment vocabulary). The text identifies the fire's intended recipients, not its nature. NEUTRAL. Stop.

- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 NO. V2 NO. Proportionality principle without specifying outcome nature. NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands.
E20 (Rom 2:8-9) -- "indignation and wrath... tribulation and anguish upon every soul that doeth evil" -- Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 NO (wrath and tribulation are not destruction vocabulary). V2: "tribulation" (thlipsis) and "anguish" (stenochoria) describe suffering but do not specify "torment" in the technical basanizo sense, nor do they specify eternal duration. Both V1 and V2 are NO for unambiguous positional vocabulary. NEUTRAL. Stop.
- Result: Classification: Neutral stands. Suffering vocabulary without duration specification.
E21 (Heb 10:28-29) -- "He that despised Moses' law died without mercy... how much sorer punishment" -- Classified: Neutral
