CLASSIFICATIONS.md — etc7-13 Lake of Fire / Second Death¶
Per-item audit trail for all positional E-items (Cond. or ECT) and all N-items. Each entry runs the full Tree 3 or Tree 4 walkthrough using tool-verified parsing data.
E-Item Classifications (Tree 3)¶
E4 (Rev 20:9) — "Fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them" — Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "devoured" (katephagen, katesthio G2719) = destruction/consumption vocabulary applied to Gog/Magog armies. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical subject of katephagen is pyr (fire, G4442, N-NSN). The object (autous, P-APM) refers to the Gog/Magog armies — human beings. However, these are within an apocalyptic vision sequence (Rev 20:7-10). The armies represent "the nations in the four quarters of the earth" (v.8) — numberless as sand. PASS (literal humans are the object of the destruction).
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: katephagen (katesthio G2719, V-2AAI-3S, second aorist active indicative). The verb unambiguously means "devoured/consumed" with pyr as subject and autous as direct object. No alternative parsing exists. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Revelation 20:7-10 is an apocalyptic vision (Rev 1:1 semaino — "signified"). The seer reports visionary scenes using symbolic imagery. FAIL — apocalyptic genre.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached (Gate 3 fails).
- Step 3 Reclassification:
- RC1: Genre is apocalyptic vision. The verse depicts a visionary scene of fire consuming armies in an apocalyptic sequence.
- RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, fire from God consumes human armies — the verb katesthio (devour) is used."
- RC3: The corrected observation uses destruction vocabulary (V1: devour), but applied within apocalyptic genre. As a genre-qualified observation, it does not constitute direct didactic teaching about human fate. Neither V1 (destruction applied to humans as literal teaching) nor V2 applies in corrected form. Result: Neutral.
E6 (Rev 19:21) — "The remnant were slain with the sword" — Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "slain" (apektanthesan, apokteino G615) = death/killing vocabulary applied to human remnant. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): hoi loipoi (the remnant) — human armies/followers of the beast. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: apektanthesan (apokteino G615, V-API-3P, aorist passive indicative). Unambiguously "were killed." The instrument is en te romphaia (by the sword). No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Revelation 19:19-21 is an apocalyptic vision (the Armageddon battle scene). The sword proceeds from Christ's mouth (v.15, 21) — symbolic imagery. FAIL — apocalyptic genre.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
- Step 3 Reclassification:
- RC1: Genre is apocalyptic vision. The sword from the mouth is symbolic (word-sword).
- RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, human followers are described as slain by the symbolic sword proceeding from the rider's mouth."
- RC3: Genre-qualified: does not constitute direct didactic teaching. Result: Neutral.
E9 (Rev 21:4) — "There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither pain" — Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "no more death" (ho thanatos ouk estai eti) = cessation vocabulary — death itself is abolished. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The grammatical subject is ho thanatos (death, G2288, N-NSM) — death as a category/condition, not a symbolic entity or allegory. The verse describes the new creation state. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: estai (eimi G1510, V-FDI-3S, future middle indicative) with negation ouk and adverb eti (anymore, G2089). "Death shall not be anymore." Grammar is unambiguous — future negation of death's existence. No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Rev 21:1-8 is the new creation passage. While within Revelation, this section is descriptive/promissory — direct divine speech ("Behold, I make all things new," v.5). It functions as direct eschatological promise, not symbolic vision. The content echoes the didactic promise of Isa 25:8 (swallow up death, wipe away tears). PASS — promissory/didactic within Revelation.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E11 (1 Cor 15:26, last enemy destroyed is death), E12 (Isa 25:8, swallow up death), E1 (Rev 20:14, death cast into lake). No conflict with any E-item. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands. The abolition of death is directly stated.
E10 (Rom 6:23) — "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life" — Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "death" (thanatos, G2288) = death vocabulary as the penalty for sin. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The statement is universal — about all humans who sin. Not symbolic or allegorical. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: thanatos (G2288, N-NSM) as predicate nominative in a verbless clause (ta gar opsonia tes hamartias thanatos). The predicate is unambiguously "death." The contrast is thanatos vs. zoe aionios (eternal life, G2222 + G166). No alternative parsing. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Romans is a Pauline epistle — didactic prose, direct theological teaching. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E25 (Ezek 18:4, soul that sins shall die), E21 (John 3:16, perish vs. life), E26 (2 Thess 1:9, everlasting destruction). No conflict. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E15 (Gen 19:24-25) — "The LORD rained brimstone and fire... he overthrew those cities" — Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "overthrew" (haphak H2015) = destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah — literal human beings and their cities. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Haphak (H2015) = to overthrow, overturn. Applied to the cities and "all the inhabitants" (et kol yoshvey ha-arim). Unambiguous destruction vocabulary. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Genesis 19 is historical narrative — reporting historical events. PASS — narrative (didactic weight).
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E16 (Luke 17:29, apollymi), E17 (2 Pet 2:6, tephroo/ashes), E18 (Mal 4:1-3, ashes). No conflict. PASS.

- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E15, E17. No conflict. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "ashes" (tephroo G5077) = destruction/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): Cities and inhabitants of Sodom — literal entities. The "ensample" (hupodeigma) explicitly extends the application to future "ungodly" (asebein) persons. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): tephrosas (tephroo G5077, aorist active participle). Means "having turned to ashes." Unique NT word. Unambiguous. katastrophe (G2692) = overthrow. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): 2 Peter is an epistle — didactic teaching. Peter explicitly makes this a type ("ensample") for the eschatological fate of the ungodly. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E15, E16, E18. No conflict. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands. Peter explicitly makes the destruction-outcome a paradigm for the ungodly.
E18 (Mal 4:1-3) — "Shall be stubble... shall burn them up... they shall be ashes under your feet" — Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "stubble," "burn up," "ashes" (qash, lahat, epher H665) = destruction/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): "All the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly" — literal human wicked. Universal scope. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Three destruction terms: qash (stubble), lahat (burn up, set ablaze), epher (H665, ashes). Grammar is direct — the wicked ARE stubble, the day SHALL burn them up, they SHALL BE ashes. PASS.

- Gate 1 (Subject): The subjects to be destroyed are "soul and body" (psychen kai soma) of human beings. Universal application. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: apolesai — not directly in the parse window, but the verse text confirms apolesai (apollymi G622, aorist active infinitive). Applied to kai psychen kai soma (both soul and body). "The one being able (ton dynamenon) to destroy both soul and body in gehenna." Grammar is unambiguous. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Matthew 10 is direct teaching of Jesus to his disciples — didactic discourse. PASS.

- Gate 1 (Subject): "Whosoever believeth" / "whosoever does not believe" — universal human scope. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: apoletai would be V-2AMS-3S (aorist middle subjunctive of apollymi G622). In the hina clause: "in order that everyone believing in him might not perish (me apoletai) but have (eche) eternal life." The binary is apollymi vs. zoe aionios. Grammar is unambiguous. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): John 3 is Jesus's direct teaching to Nicodemus — didactic discourse. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E10 (Rom 6:23, death vs. life), E20 (Matt 10:28, destroy), E27 (Phil 3:19, end is destruction). No conflict. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
E24 (1 Tim 6:16) — "Who only hath immortality" — Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "only hath immortality" implies others do NOT have immortality — cessation vocabulary by implication (humans are mortal/destructible). Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The subject is God (monos echon athanasian). The implication concerns humans. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): monos (G3441, alone/only) + echon (V-PAP-NSM, present active participle of echo) + athanasian (G110, N-ASF, immortality). "Alone having deathlessness." The word monos unambiguously means "alone/only." PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): 1 Timothy is a Pauline epistle — didactic prose. PASS.

- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The "anointed cherub" — identified as a supernatural being (the Satan-figure). Not a literal human being. However, unlike Revelation's symbolic beast, this is a non-human spirit being addressed directly by God in a prophetic oracle. FAIL — subject is a non-human spirit being.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Not reached.
- Gate 3 (Genre): Not reached.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
- Step 3 Reclassification:
- RC1: Subject is a non-human spirit being (the anointed cherub / Satan-figure).

E33 (Rev 14:10-11) — "He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone... smoke ascendeth forever" — Classified: Neutral
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — "tormented" (basanisthesetai, basanizo G928), "no rest day nor night" = conscious-ongoing-existence vocabulary. Candidate: ECT.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): "The same" (autos) — referring to "if any man worship the beast and his image" (v.9). Human beast-worshippers. PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: basanisthesetai (basanizo G928, V-FPI-3S, future passive indicative). "He shall be tormented." Grammar supports ECT reading at surface level. However, the "smoke ascending forever" formula (kapnos anabainei eis aionas aionon) draws on Isa 34:10 (same formula for Edom — fire ended). The grammar itself does not resolve whether the formula describes duration of process or permanence of result. PASS (grammar supports the surface reading).
- Gate 3 (Genre): Revelation 14 is an apocalyptic vision — the three angels' messages delivered within the visionary framework of Rev 1:1 (semaino, "signified"). FAIL — apocalyptic genre.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.

- RC1: Genre is apocalyptic vision. The passage uses the "smoke ascending forever" formula that derives from Isa 34:10 (Edom, where the fire ended — Isa 34:11-17).
- RC2: Corrected observation: "In an apocalyptic vision, the third angel uses the 'smoke ascending forever' formula — the same formula applied to Edom (Isa 34:10, fire ended) and Babylon (Rev 19:3, completely destroyed)."
- RC3: The corrected observation is a genre-qualified statement about apocalyptic formula usage. Neither side's reading survives the genre gate without qualification. Result: Neutral.
E35 (1 Cor 15:53) — "This mortal must put on immortality" — Classified: Cond.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — "mortal" (thnetos) / "put on immortality" (athanasian endysasthai) = mortality vocabulary implying destructibility. Candidate: COND.
- Step 2 Validation Gates:
- Gate 1 (Subject): The subject is the resurrected believer — literal humans. The implication extends to all humans (mortals by nature). PASS.
- Gate 2 (Grammar): endysasthai (endyo G1746, aorist middle infinitive) = "to put on." athanasian (G110, N-ASF) = immortality. The construction "must put on" (dei endysasthai) treats immortality as something external that is received, not inherent. PASS.
- Gate 3 (Genre): 1 Corinthians is a Pauline epistle — didactic prose. PASS.
- Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with E24 (1 Tim 6:16, God only has immortality). No conflict. PASS.
- Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.
N-Item Classifications (Tree 4)¶
N1 — "The text uses different vocabulary for different subject categories at the lake of fire" — Based on: E3, E4, E5, E6 — Classified: Neutral
- Gate 0 (Foundation):
- N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree that the text uses different vocabulary for different subjects? YES — the vocabulary differentiation is observable: basanisthesontai for devil/beast/false prophet (E3), katephagen for human armies (E4), zontes for beast/false prophet (E5), apektanthesan for human remnant (E6). Both sides can verify this from the text. PASS.
- N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only possible conclusion? YES — the vocabulary IS different. This is an observable grammatical fact, not a choice between readings. PASS.
- N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): Does this add anything beyond the E-items? NO — it simply observes that E3, E4, E5, E6 use different words. No concept added. PASS.
- Gate 0 PASSES. Proceed to Tree 3.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: Neither V1 (destruction applied to wicked humans) nor V2 (torment applied to wicked humans). This is a grammatical/observational statement about vocabulary distribution. Both V1 and V2 fail. Result: Neutral. Stop.
N2 — "The casting of death and hades into the lake (Rev 20:14) fulfills the OT/NT death-of-death chain" — Based on: E1, E11, E12 — Classified: Neutral
- Gate 0 (Foundation):
- N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would a scholar from either position agree that Rev 20:14 (death cast into lake) fulfills 1 Cor 15:26 (last enemy destroyed is death) and Isa 25:8 (death swallowed up)? YES — the vocabulary connections (katargeo/bala/eblethesan all applied to thanatos/maveth) and the intertextual quotation chain (Paul quoting Isaiah, Revelation echoing both) are verifiable. PASS.
- N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only possible conclusion from the cited E-items? The E-items state: death will be swallowed up (E12), death is the last enemy destroyed (E11), death was cast into the lake (E1). That the casting IS the destruction/swallowing-up follows without alternative. PASS.
- N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): Does this add any concept not in E1, E11, E12? NO — it merely observes that the same subject (death) receives the same treatment (destroyed/swallowed/cast-in) across the three passages. PASS.
- Gate 0 PASSES. Proceed to Tree 3.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — destruction of death. But death being destroyed is an observation both sides accept. Neither V1 nor V2 applies in a positional sense — both ECT and conditionalist scholars agree death is destroyed/abolished. Result: Neutral. Stop.
N3 — "The torment formula (basanisthesontai eis tous aionas ton aionon) appears once in Scripture (Rev 20:10), applied only to the devil, beast, and false prophet" — Based on: E3 — Classified: Neutral
- Gate 0 (Foundation):
- N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree the formula appears once and is applied only to these three subjects? YES — this is a concordance-verifiable fact. PASS.
- N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only possible conclusion? YES — the formula either appears elsewhere or it does not. It does not. PASS.
- N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): NO added concepts — just counting occurrences and noting subjects. PASS.
- Gate 0 PASSES. Proceed to Tree 3.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: This is a statistical/distribution observation. Neither V1 nor V2. Result: Neutral. Stop.
N4 — "The same X=Y identification formula used in Rev 20:14 is used throughout Revelation to equate symbols with referents" — Based on: E1, E13, E14 — Classified: Neutral
- Gate 0 (Foundation):
- N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would a scholar from either position agree that Rev 1:20, 17:9,15,18 and Rev 20:14 use the same copular identification construction? YES — this is grammatical observation. PASS.
- N-Test 2 (No interpretation): YES — the construction is the same (subject + estin/eisin + predicate nominative). PASS.
- N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): NO — just observing the same grammatical pattern across passages. PASS.
- Gate 0 PASSES. Proceed to Tree 3.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: Grammatical observation. Neither V1 nor V2. Result: Neutral. Stop.
N5 — "Being in the book of life = exempt from second death; not in book = subject to second death" — Based on: E7, E30 — Classified: Neutral
- Gate 0 (Foundation):
- N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would both sides agree that Rev 2:11 (overcomer not hurt of second death), Rev 3:5 (not blotted from book of life), and Rev 20:15 (not found in book = cast into lake) together establish this correspondence? YES — the two-sides-of-same-coin relationship between the overcomer promises and the book of life criterion is textually explicit. PASS.
- N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only possible conclusion? The overcomer is protected from the second death (E7) AND the overcomer's name is not blotted from the book of life (Rev 3:5) AND those not in the book are cast into the lake = second death (E30, E1). The correspondence follows without alternative. PASS.
- N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): NO — merely connects E-items that the text itself connects (same overcomer, same destination mechanism). PASS.
- Gate 0 PASSES. Proceed to Tree 3.
- Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: This is a structural/mechanism observation. Neither V1 nor V2 applies in a positional direction. Both sides accept the book-of-life-as-criterion mechanism. Result: Neutral. Stop.
All classifications completed. No reclassifications of N-items to I-tier were required (all N-items passed Gate 0).
