Cross-Testament Parallels

  • Rev 14:11 → Isa 34:10 (ot, vocabulary + structural — identical smoke-ascending-forever formula; OT source for NT apocalyptic imagery. Edom's fire ended (animals dwell in ruins, Isa 34:11-17))
  • Rev 20:10 → Isa 34:10 (ot, vocabulary — 'forever' fire/smoke language; both use olam/aionios duration formula for fires that ended)
  • Rev 20:10 → Ezek 28:18-19 (ot, subject + thematic — same being (Satan-figure); OT describes with cessation vocabulary (ashes, never any more), Rev uses torment vocabulary. Competing portrayals of same entity's fate)
  • Mark 9:48 → Isa 66:24 (ot, direct quotation — Mark 9:48 quotes Isa 66:24. OT source identifies subjects as peger (corpses). Worm and fire act on dead bodies.)
  • 2 Thess 1:9 → Isa 2:10 (ot, vocabulary — 'apo prosopou' (from the presence/face) phrase. In Isa 2:10,19,21 LXX, the divine presence is the destructive agent. People flee FROM the destroying presence.)
  • 2 Thess 1:9 → Psa 68:2 (ot, thematic — 'wicked perish at the presence of God.' Divine presence as destructive agent, not banishment location.)
  • Rev 6:9 → Gen 4:10 (ot, forensic personification pattern — Abel's blood cries from the ground; souls cry from under the altar. Inanimate/dead things given voice to demand justice.)
  • Rev 6:9 → Lev 4:7 (ot, typological — sacrificial blood poured at base of altar; souls positioned under the altar. Altar-base = position of poured-out blood.)
  • Matt 25:46 → Dan 12:2 (ot, structural — dual-outcome judgment formula. Both use 'eternal' + contrasting outcomes. Dan 12:2 links to Isa 66:24 via dera'on.)
  • Rev 19:3 → Isa 34:10 (ot, vocabulary — identical smoke formula. Babylon's smoke ascends forever; Edom's smoke ascends forever. Both destructions were total.)
