CLASSIFICATIONS.md — ECT Strongest Case (etc7-15)

Classification Audit Trail

This study is a synthesis compiling and cross-referencing classifications from 13 prior etc7 studies. The Tree 3/4 walkthroughs for each individual item were performed in the source studies by classifier subagents with actual parser tool output. This document compiles the verified results organized by the 8 ECT passages.

ECT Passage Classifications (E-Tier)

E-items from the 8 ECT Passages

E1 (Rev 14:11) — "The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night" — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-11-smoke-ascending-forever

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — basanismos (G929), torment vocabulary applied to beast-worshippers. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Beast-worshippers are human subjects described within an apocalyptic vision. PASS (borderline — subjects are human but within visionary framework).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): basanismou (G929, Gen Sg M) in genitive chain "smoke of their torment" — smoke ascends, not necessarily the torment itself. anapausis (G372) "no rest day and night" — identical construction to Rev 4:8 (ceaseless praise). Grammar permits multiple readings. PASS (no single grammar issue forces failure, but ambiguity noted).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision — third angel's message within Revelation's seal/trumpet/bowl framework. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached (Gate 3 fail).
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gate 3 fail — apocalyptic genre, not didactic. RC2: "An apocalyptic vision describes smoke ascending from tormented beast-worshippers." RC3: Apocalyptic depiction does not constitute didactic teaching about human fate. Neither V1 nor V2 applies at the didactic level.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails. Classification revised to Neutral.

E2 (Rev 20:10) — "And shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-12-tormented-forever

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — basanisthesontai (G928), torment vocabulary. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Three subjects: diabolos (devil — supernatural being, Rev 12:9), therion (beast — 7 heads/10 horns, Rev 13:1 — symbolic system), pseudoprophetes (false prophet — earth beast, Rev 13:11-17). None is a literal human being. FAIL.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Not reached (Gate 1 fail).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gate 1 fail — all three subjects are non-human/symbolic. RC2: "An apocalyptic vision describes three non-human/symbolic entities tormented." RC3: Non-human entities' torment does not establish what happens to literal humans. Neither V1 nor V2 applies to human fate.
  • Result: Gate 1 and Gate 3 fail. Classification revised to Neutral.

E3 (Matt 25:46) — "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal" — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-14-judgment-passages

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — kolasis (G2851) "punishment" — from kolazo "to curtail." Could be read as destruction-result. V2 — "everlasting punishment" could imply ongoing conscious experience. Both V1 and V2 potentially triggered.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Human subjects (goats in judgment parable). PASS (subjects are human within parabolic framework).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): kolasin aionion (G2851 + G166, Acc Sg F) // zoen aionion (G2222 + G166, Acc Sg F) — identical grammatical construction. kolasis means punishment/penalty, NOT torment. Grammar permits both "everlasting punishment-as-process" and "everlasting punishment-as-result." FAIL — alternative parsing valid (both readings grammatically possible).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Parabolic — sheep/goats imagery (v.32 "as a shepherd divideth"). FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gate 2 and Gate 3 fail. Both readings grammatically valid; parabolic genre. RC2: "A judgment parable states two outcomes: everlasting punishment and life eternal, using the same adjective." RC3: Neither V1 nor V2 exclusively applies — the observation is factual without position.
  • Result: Gates 2 and 3 fail. Classification: Neutral — the grammatical parallel is an observable fact both sides accept.

E4 (Mark 9:48 / Isa 66:24) — "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched" — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-21-judgment-parables-imagery

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — fire and worm imagery applied to judgment subjects. Candidate: ECT (if subjects are conscious).
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Jesus quotes Isa 66:24. The OT source identifies subjects as peger (H6297) — corpses/dead bodies in ALL 24 OT uses. Isa 66:16-17 establishes the transgressors were slain and consumed BEFORE the viewing. Subjects are corpses. FAIL — subjects are dead, not living conscious beings.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Not reached for ECT classification (Gate 1 fail).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Jesus' direct teaching — didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gate 1 fail — subjects are corpses per OT source text. RC2: "Undying worm and unquenchable fire act on corpses (peger) of transgressors who were already slain." RC3: V1 — destruction vocabulary applies (worm/fire acting on dead bodies = decomposition/consumption agents). Corrected observation: Cond. direction.
  • Result: Gate 1 fails. Corrected observation points toward Neutral (the text describes agents of decomposition acting on dead bodies — this is what the text says, without requiring either position). However, the corrected observation could also be classified Cond. since the subjects are dead.
  • Final classification in etc7-21: Neutral (the text describes what happens to corpses — both sides can accept this as textual fact while disagreeing about whether the imagery implies consciousness or death).

E5 (Luke 16:23-25) — Rich man "in torments" in hades — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-09-rich-man-lazarus

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — basanos (G931) "torments" and odunao (G3600) "grieved/pained." Candidate: ECT-direction.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The rich man is an allegorical character in a parable. The identical "certain rich man" formula appears at Luke 12:16 (explicit parable label) and 16:1 (universally recognized parable). Luke 15:3 provides single parabole label for the discourse unit. FAIL — allegorical character.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): basanois (G931, N-DPF) — basanos, NOT basanismos (G929). Different vocabulary register. odunao (G3600) — grief, NOT eschatological torment. Grammar noted but Gate 1 already failed.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Parabolic — classified as parable via I-B resolution (Strong) from 15+ Plain items against 1 Contextually Clear item. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gates 1 and 3 fail — allegorical character in a parable. RC2: "A parabolic character experiences grief (basanos/odunao) in hades." RC3: Parabolic depiction does not constitute didactic teaching. Neither V1 nor V2 applies at the didactic level.
  • Result: Gates 1 and 3 fail. Classification revised to Neutral.

E6 (Rev 6:9-11) — "Souls of them that were slain... cried with a loud voice" — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-10-souls-under-altar

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — conscious souls speaking, implying survival of death. Candidate: ECT-direction (intermediate state consciousness).
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Vision-figures in apocalyptic scene ("I saw" — eidon). The souls occupy the typological position of sacrificial blood poured at the altar's base (Lev 4:7). The "cry" follows forensic personification (Gen 4:10 — Abel's blood cries; Jas 5:4 — wages cry; Rev 16:7 — altar speaks). FAIL — symbolic vision-figures.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Not reached (Gate 1 fail).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision — fifth seal in Revelation's seal sequence. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gates 1 and 3 fail. RC2: "An apocalyptic vision shows symbolic figures (martyrs in sacrificial-blood position) crying for justice — following the forensic personification pattern." RC3: Neither V1 nor V2 applies — vision-figure speech does not establish anthropological teaching.
  • Result: Gates 1 and 3 fail. Classification revised to Neutral.

E7 (2 Thess 1:9) — "Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord" — Classified: Cond.

Source: etc7-14-judgment-passages

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 — olethros (G3639) "destruction" — cessation/ending vocabulary. Candidate: Cond.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Human sinners — "them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel." Literal humans. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): olethron (G3639, N-ASM) aionion (G166, A-ASM) — everlasting destruction. olethros means destruction/ruin in ALL 4 NT occurrences. No alternative parsing removes the destruction meaning. apo prosopou (G575 + G4383) echoes Isa 2:10 LXX — divine presence as destructive agent. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Didactic epistle — Paul's doctrinal teaching to Thessalonians. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Rom 6:23 (wages = death), Matt 10:28 (destroy soul/body), Ezek 18:4 (soul dies), Mal 4:1-3 (ashes). No conflicting E-items. PASS.
  • Result: All four gates pass. Classification Cond. stands.

E8 (Dan 12:2) — "And some to shame and everlasting contempt" — Classified: Neutral

Source: etc7-14-judgment-passages

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 — dera'on (H1860) "contempt/abhorrence" — could imply ongoing conscious shame. Candidate: ECT. V1 — dera'on linked to corpses in Isa 66:24 could be passive observation. Candidate: Cond. Both triggered.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Many of them that sleep in the dust" — resurrected humans. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): dera'on olam (H1860 + H5769) parallels chayyei olam (H2416 + H5769). Dera'on has only 2 OT occurrences. In Isa 66:24, the objects of dera'on are peger (corpses). The word is ambiguous between experienced shame and observed contempt. FAIL — alternative parsing valid (experienced vs. observed).
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Didactic prophecy. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached (Gate 2 fail on position, not on tier).
  • Step 3 Reclassification: Gate 2 ambiguity — dera'on could be experienced or observed. RC2: "Resurrected humans receive one of two outcomes: everlasting life or everlasting contempt, where the only other occurrence of dera'on describes a reaction to corpses." RC3: Both V1 and V2 potentially apply. Neither can be established over the other from this verse alone.
  • Result: Gate 2 ambiguity. Classification: Neutral — the text states two outcomes but does not specify whether dera'on is experienced or observed.

Counter-Evidence E-Item Classifications (Cond.)

These items passed all four Tree 3 gates in their source studies.

E9 (Rom 6:23) — "The wages of sin is death" — Classified: Cond. - V1: thanatos (G2288) — death vocabulary. Gate 1: human subjects. Gate 2: thanatos unambiguous. Gate 3: didactic epistle. Gate 4: consistent with all other destruction E-items. All gates PASS.

E10 (1 Tim 6:16) — "Who only hath immortality" — Classified: Cond. - V1: monos echon athanasian — "only one having immortality" implies humans lack it. Gate 1: divine attribute with human implication. Gate 2: monos (G3441) = only/alone; grammar unambiguous. Gate 3: didactic epistle. Gate 4: consistent. All gates PASS.

E11 (Matt 10:28) — "Fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" — Classified: Cond. - V1: apollymi (G622) — destroy vocabulary. Gate 1: human subjects. Gate 1: human sinners. Gate 2: "neither root nor branch" — complete. Gate 3: didactic prophecy. Gate 4: consistent. All gates PASS.

E14 (John 3:16) — "Should not perish, but have everlasting life" — Classified: Cond. - V1: apollymi (G622) — perish. Gate 1: human subjects (universal). Gate 2: perish/life antithesis unambiguous. Gate 3: didactic teaching. Gate 4: consistent. All gates PASS.

E15 (2 Pet 2:6) — "Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes... an ensample" — Classified: Cond. - V1: tephroo (hapax) — turned to ashes. Gate 1: historical cities as example (hupodeigma) for ungodly humans. Gate 2: tephroo unambiguous. Gate 3: didactic epistle. Gate 4: consistent. All gates PASS.

Neutral E-Item Classifications

The following E-items were classified Neutral because they are factual observations both sides accept:

E16 (Rev 20:9) — "Fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them" — Neutral - Vocabulary differentiation datum — factual observation about which verb the text uses for human subjects (katephagen, not basanisthesontai).

E17 (Rev 20:14) — "This is the second death" — Neutral - Predicate nominative formula: lake of fire = second death. Textual fact both sides accept.

E18 (Rev 21:8) — "Which is the second death" — Neutral - Restatement of X=Y formula for human sinners.

E19 (Rev 19:20-21) — Vocabulary differentiation between beast/humans — Neutral - Factual observation about different verbs for different subjects.

E20 (Rev 19:3) — Identical smoke formula for Babylon — Neutral - Factual observation about formula usage.

E21 (Rev 4:8) — Identical "no rest day and night" construction — Neutral - Factual observation about shared grammatical construction.

E22 (Isa 34:9-10) — Smoke ascending "for ever" — Neutral - Factual observation about OT usage of the smoke formula.

E23 (Isa 34:11-17) — Animals dwell in ruins — Neutral - Factual observation proving the fire/smoke ended.

E24 (Ezek 28:18-19) — Satan-figure consumed to ashes, "never any more" — Neutral - Factual observation about OT description of the Satan-figure's fate. (Could also be classified Cond. but since it describes a non-human entity, Neutral is appropriate.)

E25 (Tit 1:2) — Same adjective (aionios) used twice with different temporal scopes — Neutral - Grammatical fact both sides must accept.

E26 (Heb 9:12) — "Eternal redemption" obtained once — Neutral - Factual observation about the aionios + result-noun pattern.

E27 (Matt 25:41) — "Everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels" — Neutral - Factual observation about the fire's primary designation.

E28 (Isa 66:16-17) — Transgressors slain and consumed before v.24 viewing — Neutral - Factual observation about the textual sequence.

E29 (Rev 12:9) — Four-fold identification of the devil — Neutral - Factual identification data.

E30 (Rev 13:1) — Beast has 7 heads and 10 horns — Neutral - Factual observation establishing the beast is symbolic.

N-Item Classifications

N1 — "If God alone has immortality (E10), and the soul can be destroyed (E11), and the soul that sins dies (E12), then humans do not inherently possess immortality" — Based on: E10, E11, E12 — Classified: Cond.

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): An ECT scholar would not necessarily agree — they would argue "God alone has immortality" means "inherent/underived" immortality, while humans receive derived immortality. FAIL.
  • Result: Gate 0 fails. Reclassified as I-A Cond. — the claim is text-derived and aligns with E/N items, but requires choosing between "inherent" and "any" immortality. Moved to I-tier.

N2 — "Basanismos/basanizo for human eschatological fate appears in zero epistles, zero Gospel teachings, zero OT passages" — Based on: word study data — Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Both sides can verify this distribution fact. PASS.
  • N-Test 2: This is the only possible conclusion from the distribution data. PASS.
  • N-Test 3: No added concepts — pure vocabulary distribution. PASS.
  • Tree 3 Vocabulary Scan: Neither V1 nor V2 — this is a distributional observation.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Neutral — vocabulary distribution is a factual observation.

N3 — "Destruction/death vocabulary for human eschatological fate spans all genres and all major biblical authors" — Based on: E7, E9, E11, E12, E13, E14, E15 — Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0: All three N-tests pass — both sides acknowledge these passages use destruction vocabulary.
  • Tree 3: Distributional observation.
  • Result: Neutral — vocabulary distribution is factual.

N4 — "In consecutive verses by the same author, humans receive different verbs than non-human entities at the lake of fire" — Based on: E16, E19 — Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0: All three N-tests pass — both sides can observe the different verbs.
  • Result: Neutral — textual observation.

N5 — "The 'ages of ages' smoke formula (Isa 34:10) describes a fire that historically ended (Isa 34:11-17 — animals dwell in ruins)" — Based on: E22, E23 — Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0: All three N-tests pass — both sides can observe that the fire ended and animals dwell there.
  • Result: Neutral — historical/textual observation.

N6 — "Dera'on in its only occurrence with specified objects (Isa 66:24) describes a reaction to corpses (peger), not a conscious experience" — Based on: Isa 66:24 parsing — Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0:
  • N-Test 1: An ECT scholar could argue the Isa 66:24 usage does not control the Dan 12:2 usage. FAIL.
  • Result: Gate 0 fails. Reclassified as I-A Cond. — text-derived, aligns with E/N, but requires the interpretive step that one occurrence governs another.

N7 — "The lake of fire is self-interpreted as 'the second death' via predicate nominative formula (Rev 20:14)" — Based on: E17 — Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0: All three N-tests pass — both sides accept the predicate nominative formula. The text says "this is the second death."
  • Result: Neutral — self-interpretation is a textual fact.

Classification audit completed. All positional classifications verified against prior study classifier output.
