  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: ehi (Introg = where) + devareycha (Noun.mp + 2ms = thy plagues/stings) + maveth (Noun.ms.Abs = death). Ehi (where) + qatavcha (Noun.ms + 2ms = thy destruction/sting) + sheol (Noun.s.Abs). God addresses death and sheol directly with destruction vocabulary. PASS.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "Second death" (thanatos deuteros). Death vocabulary applied to the lake of fire. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Death (thanatos) and hades (hades) -- personified concepts. The teaching is about the fate of these realms. Gate 1 tests whether the subject is a literal human; death and hades as concepts being abolished are theological teachings applicable to human eschatology. PASS (the "second death" label applies to what happens to humans in the lake of fire, per Rev 21:8).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: thanatos (G2288, Nom Sg M) + hades (G86, Nom Sg M) + eblethesan (ballo G906, Aor Pass Ind 3P = were cast) + limnen (limne G3041, Acc Sg F = lake) + pyros (pyr G4442, Gen Sg N = of fire). Houtos (D-Nom Sg M = this) + thanatos (G2288, Nom Sg M) + deuteros (G1208, Nom Sg M = second) + estin (eimi G1510, Pres Act Ind 3S = is). The equative clause "this is the second death" is grammatically unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision. FAIL -- Genre is apocalyptic (Revelation).
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Genre is apocalyptic vision. The statement "this is the second death" is the author's own interpretive gloss on the vision (not the symbolic imagery itself).
  • RC2: Corrected observation: Within an apocalyptic text, the author identifies the lake of fire as "the second death." The gloss itself uses death vocabulary (thanatos).
  • RC3: Re-enter V1: "Second death" = death vocabulary applied to the lake of fire's nature. V1 applies (death/cessation vocabulary). Candidate: COND.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails (apocalyptic genre), but the author's own interpretive gloss uses death vocabulary. Classification: Cond. stands (the death vocabulary is the author's interpretation of his own vision, not the symbolic imagery itself).

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "Second death" (thanatos deuteros). Same death vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Human sinners listed (fearful, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, etc.). Literal humans. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: limne (G3041, Dat Sg F = lake) + kaio (G2545, Pres Pass Ptcp Dat Sg F = burning) + pyr (G4442, Dat Sg N = fire) + theion (G2303, Dat Sg N = brimstone). Ho (Art) + thanatos (G2288) + deuteros (G1208). Equative: "which is the second death." Unambiguous. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic (Revelation). FAIL.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Same as E10 -- apocalyptic genre, but the gloss "which is the second death" is the author's interpretive explanation.
  • RC2: The subjects are literal categories of sinners. The author defines their fate as "the second death."
  • RC3: V1: death vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails (apocalyptic), but subjects are literal human categories and the author's gloss uses death vocabulary. Classification: Cond. stands.

E12 (Rev 20:10) -- "The devil... shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- basanizo (torment) + "day and night for ever and ever." Conscious-ongoing-existence vocabulary. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Diabolos (devil), therion (beast), pseudoprophetes (false prophet). Parser output: diabolos (G1228), therion (G2342), pseudoprophetes (G5578). The beast and false prophet are symbolic entities in an apocalyptic vision. The devil is a non-human spirit being. FAIL -- Subject is non-human spirit being (devil) and symbolic entities (beast, false prophet).
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Subject is the devil (non-human spirit being) and two symbolic entities (beast, false prophet) -- not literal humans.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "An apocalyptic vision depicts three non-human/symbolic entities (devil, beast, false prophet) being tormented in the lake of fire."
  • RC3: Re-enter V1/V2 with corrected observation: Torment vocabulary applied to non-human/symbolic entities does not constitute evidence about literal human fate. Neither V1 (destruction of wicked humans) nor V2 (torment of wicked humans) applies. → Neutral.
  • Result: Gate 1 fails. Classification revised to: Neutral.

  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Whosoever receiveth the mark of the beast" -- literally identified humans. But these are characters within an apocalyptic vision. PASS with qualification (the subjects are described as humans, though within apocalyptic genre).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Basanizo (G928, Fut Pass Ind 3S) + basanismos (G929). Grammar supports the torment reading. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision (Revelation). FAIL -- the passage is apocalyptic imagery, not didactic teaching.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Genre is apocalyptic vision. The "smoke ascending forever" formula alludes to Isaiah 34:9-10 (Edom's destruction -- Edom is not still burning).
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "An apocalyptic vision uses OT destruction-completion imagery (Isa 34:9-10 smoke formula) to describe the fate of beast-worshippers."
  • RC3: Re-enter V1/V2: The corrected observation, read in light of the OT source (Isa 34:9-10 = completed destruction), does not unambiguously support either conscious torment or destruction. The apocalyptic genre prevents confident extraction of literal duration. → Neutral.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails (apocalyptic). Classification revised to: Neutral.

E14 (Luke 16:23) -- "In hades he lift up his eyes, being in torments." -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- basanos (torment); "lift up his eyes" (consciousness). Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The rich man -- a character in a parable. FAIL -- allegorical character in a parable.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Subject is a parabolic character, not a literal human. Luke 16 is part of a parable series (Luke 15-16).
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "A parable depicts a character experiencing torment in hades."
  • RC3: Parabolic depiction does not constitute didactic teaching about human fate. Neither V1 nor V2 applies as evidence about actual human experience. → Neutral.
  • Result: Gate 1 fails. Classification revised to: Neutral.

N8 -- "OT background of gehenna involves slaughter and corpse disposal, not ongoing torment." -- Based on: E-Jer7:31-32 ('Valley of Slaughter,' burial), E-Isa66:24 (peger = corpses), E-Jer19:6 (slaughter), E-2Ki23:10 (child sacrifice ended) -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree the OT Valley of Hinnom passages describe slaughter? YES -- the text says "Valley of Slaughter," burial, and carcasses. PASS.
  • N-Test 2: Only conclusion? YES -- the text uses haregah (slaughter), qabar (burial), peger (corpses). PASS.
  • N-Test 3: Zero added? YES. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral stands.

N9 -- "Both righteous and wicked go to sheol." -- Based on: Jacob (E-Gen37:35), David (Ps 86:13), Job (Job 14:13), Christ (E-Ps16:10/Acts2:27) go to sheol; also Korah (E-Num16:33), the wicked (Ps 9:17) -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree both righteous and wicked go to sheol? This is the standard scholarly understanding. PASS.
  • N-Test 2: Only conclusion? YES -- the texts name specific righteous individuals going to sheol. PASS.
  • N-Test 3: Zero added? YES. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral stands.

N10 -- "The sheol-Abaddon pairing associates sheol with destruction, not torment." -- Based on: E-Job26:6, E-Ps88:11, E-Prov15:11, E-Prov27:20, E-Rev9:11 (Abaddon = Apollyon = Destroyer) -- Classified: Cond.

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree sheol is paired with Abaddon (destruction)? YES -- the pairing is textually verifiable. But would they agree this means sheol is "associated with destruction, not torment"? The "not torment" qualification adds an interpretive step. FAIL -- the "not torment" part requires choosing an interpretation.
  • Reclassification: N-Test 1 fails on the "not torment" qualification. The pairing itself is observable (Neutral), but the conclusion "not torment" requires interpretation. Reclassify the implication portion as I-A (systematizes observable E-items).

Corrected: The factual observation "Sheol is paired with Abaddon (destruction) in 5+ passages" is N-tier Neutral. The conclusion "this pairing associates sheol with destruction rather than torment" is I-A Cond.

N11 -- "When humans encounter the lake of fire, the text uses death vocabulary; when non-human entities encounter it, the text uses torment vocabulary." -- Based on: E-Rev20:10 (torment for devil/beast/false prophet), E-Rev20:14-15 (second death for humans), E-Rev21:8 (second death for humans) -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1: Would an ECT scholar agree this vocabulary distinction exists? YES -- it is observable in the text. Whether they agree on its significance is a different question. PASS.
  • N-Test 2: Only conclusion? YES -- Rev 20:10 uses basanizo for devil/beast/false prophet; Rev 20:14, 21:8 use thanatos for humans. The distinction is textual. PASS.
  • N-Test 3: Zero added? YES -- just noting what words the text uses for which subjects. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral stands. (The observation is factual; its interpretation belongs in the I-tier.)
