Classification Audit Trail — etc7-11-smoke-ascending-forever

This document contains the full Tree 3/4 walkthrough for every E-item classified Cond. or ECT and every N-item. Each classification was verified with actual parser tool output (hebrew_parser.py or greek_parser.py).

E-Item Classifications (Tree 3)

E1 (Rev 14:11) -- "the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- "torment" (basanismos G929), "no rest" (anapausis G372) applied to beast-worshippers. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The subjects are "those who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name." These are described within an apocalyptic vision. The beast is symbolic (7 heads, 10 horns — Rev 13:1); the image and mark are symbolic elements. The worshippers are described in relation to symbolic entities. However, the "if any man" (ei tis) in v.9 refers to literal humans. PASS (subject is human, described via symbolic referents).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser output: kapnos (G2586 N-NSM) + basanismou (G929 N-GSM) + anabainei (G305 V-PAI-3S Pres Act Ind) + eis aionas aionon (G165 N-APM + N-GPM). Anapausin (G372 N-ASF) + ouk echousin (G2192 V-PAI-3P). The grammar is clear and does not depend on editorial punctuation. The eis + accusative construction is standard for duration/destination. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Rev 14:9-11 is part of an apocalyptic vision sequence. Rev 1:1 uses semaino (G4591) — "signified" — establishing the book as sign-communicated. Rev 14:1-5 features symbolic Lamb, Mount Zion, 144,000, harps. Rev 14:14-20 has symbolic sickle, winepress, blood to horse bridles for 1,600 furlongs. The third angel speaks within this symbolic framework. Genre: apocalyptic vision. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached (Gate 3 fails).
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Gate 3 fails — passage is apocalyptic vision, not didactic prose.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "An apocalyptic vision depicts the smoke of torment of beast-worshippers ascending for ever and ever within a symbolic framework."
  • RC3: Re-enter Step 1: The corrected observation restates what the vision depicts. Apocalyptic vision depiction does not constitute didactic teaching about human fate. Neither V1 (destruction vocabulary for literal humans) nor V2 (torment vocabulary for literal humans in didactic text) applies to a genre-qualified observation.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails. Classification revised to Neutral.

E4 (Isa 34:11-17) -- "the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it... they shall possess it for ever" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- The passage describes the aftermath of "forever" fire: the fire has ended, animals dwell in the ruins. This is destruction/cessation evidence — the "forever" fire terminated, proving le-olam fire = permanent result. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The subjects are animals (cormorant, bittern, owl, raven, etc.) inhabiting territory whose fire was described as "forever" in v.10. The verse describes the result on the land/judgment, not a symbolic entity. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser confirms le-olam (H5769 prep + noun ms) in v.17 for animals' habitation — same word as v.10's smoke. Ya'aleh (H5927 Qal Impf 3ms) "ascend" for smoke. The grammar directly states animals possess the land le-olam. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Isaiah 34 is direct-speech prophecy ("thus says the LORD" framework). Didactic/prophetic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all other E-items showing fire-and-brimstone produces permanent desolation, not ongoing burning. No conflict. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E5 (Gen 19:24-25) -- "The LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire... and he overthrew those cities" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "overthrew" (haphak H2015) = destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): The subjects are the cities and their inhabitants — literal people and places. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: himtir (H4305 Hiphil Perf 3ms) "rained"; gophrith (H1614 noun fs) "brimstone"; esh (H784 noun s) "fire." Grammar unambiguously states God rained destructive agents. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Historical narrative — Genesis describing a historical event. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Luke 17:29 ("destroyed them all"), 2 Pet 2:6 ("ashes"), Jude 1:7 ("eternal fire" producing ashes). No conflict. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E6 (Mal 4:1) -- "all that do wickedly shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "stubble" (qash H7179), "burn up" (lahat H3857 Piel), "neither root nor branch" = total consumption/destruction. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "All the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly" = literal human wicked. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: bo'er (H1197 Qal Ptcp ms) "burning"; qash (H7179 noun ms) "stubble"; lihat (H3857 Piel Perf 3ms) "devour." Grammar unambiguously states wicked become stubble and are devoured leaving nothing. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Direct-speech prophecy — "saith the LORD of hosts." Didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all destruction vocabulary passages. No conflict. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E7 (Mal 4:3) -- "they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "ashes" (epher H665) = the stated result of fire. Total reduction/destruction. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "The wicked" (resha'im) = literal human wicked. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: epher (H665 noun ms) "ashes/dust"; tachat (noun ms construct) "under"; kappoth (noun fp construct) "soles"; ragleikhem (noun fd + 2mp suffix) "your feet." Grammar directly states the wicked become ashes. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Direct-speech prophecy — "saith the LORD of hosts." Didactic. PASS.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with 2 Pet 2:6 (Sodom = ashes), Ezek 28:18 (ashes). No conflict. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E14 (Rev 20:9) -- "fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "devoured" (katephagen G2719) = destruction vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "They" = the human enemies who surrounded the beloved city (v.9a). Literal human armies. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: katephagen (G2719 V-2AAI-3S Aor Act Ind) "devoured"; autous (G846 P-APM) "them." Aorist active indicative — completed, decisive action. Grammar unambiguously states fire devoured the humans. PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Gate 3 fails — passage is apocalyptic vision.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "An apocalyptic vision depicts fire devouring human enemies using destruction vocabulary (katephagen)."
  • RC3: Re-enter Step 1: The corrected observation still contains destruction vocabulary (devoured) applied to humans, even within apocalyptic genre. V1 applies — "devour" is destruction/cessation vocabulary. However, the genre qualification means this apocalyptic depiction is not didactic proof. The observation that destruction vocabulary (not torment vocabulary) is used for humans remains a factual textual observation both sides acknowledge.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails. Classification revised to Neutral (the vocabulary choice is a textual fact both sides accept; the theological implication requires interpretation).

E15 (Rev 20:10) -- "the devil... shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" -- Classified: Neutral

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V2 -- "tormented" (basanisthesontai G928) = conscious-ongoing-existence vocabulary. Candidate: ECT.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): Three subjects: the devil (non-human spirit being), the beast (7 heads, 10 horns — symbolic entity; Rev 13:1 describes it rising from the sea with symbolic features), the false prophet (second beast of Rev 13:11-17 — symbolic entity). None is a literal human. FAIL.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Not reached.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Not reached.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Gate 1 fails — subjects are non-human (devil) and symbolic (beast, false prophet), not literal humans.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "Non-human and symbolic entities (devil, beast, false prophet) are depicted as tormented for ever and ever in the lake of fire."
  • RC3: Re-enter Step 1: The corrected observation describes non-human/symbolic entities, not human fate. Neither V1 (destruction of human wicked) nor V2 (torment of human wicked) applies to non-human subjects as evidence about human fate.
  • Result: Gate 1 fails. Classification revised to Neutral.

E16 (Rev 20:14-15) -- "This is the second death... whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "second death" (thanatos G2288) = death vocabulary applied to human wicked. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:
  • Gate 1 (Subject): "Whosoever was not found written in the book of life" = literal human wicked. PASS.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser: thanatos (G2288 N-NSM) "death"; deuteros (G1208 A-NSM) "second"; estin (G1510 V-PAI-3S) "is." Grammar directly equates the lake of fire with "the second death." PASS.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision. FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Gate 3 fails — passage is apocalyptic vision.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "An apocalyptic vision designates the lake of fire as 'the second death' when humans enter it."
  • RC3: Re-enter Step 1: The corrected observation still contains death vocabulary (V1) applied to human wicked. The genre qualification does not eliminate the vocabulary choice: Revelation uses "death" (not "torment") when naming the human fate. However, as an apocalyptic genre statement, it is not didactic proof. The vocabulary choice (death, not torment) is a textual fact both sides acknowledge.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails. Classification revised to Neutral (the vocabulary designation "second death" is a textual fact).

E17 (Rev 21:8) -- "shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "second death" (thanatos G2288) = death vocabulary for human wicked. Candidate: COND.

  • Gate 3 (Genre): Apocalyptic vision (Revelation). FAIL.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Not reached.
  • Step 3 Reclassification:
  • RC1: Gate 3 fails — apocalyptic vision.
  • RC2: Corrected observation: "An apocalyptic vision names the human fate in the lake of fire as 'the second death.'"
  • RC3: Re-enter Step 1: Same analysis as E16. Death vocabulary (V1) in apocalyptic genre.
  • Result: Gate 3 fails. Classification revised to Neutral.

  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with Gen 19:24-25 (overthrew), 2 Pet 2:6 (ashes), Mal 4:1-3 (stubble/ashes). No conflict. PASS.
  • Result: All gates pass. Classification: Cond. stands.

E19 (2 Pet 2:6) -- "turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes... making them an ensample" -- Classified: Cond.

  • Step 1 Vocabulary Scan: V1 -- "ashes" (tephrosas G5077) = destruction/cessation vocabulary. Candidate: COND.
  • Step 2 Validation Gates:

However, the prophecy is addressed to a historical king while using language that extends to a supernatural referent. The cessation vocabulary is applied to the subject regardless. PASS (the text applies cessation vocabulary to whoever the subject is).
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): Parser unavailable for this verse (parser error). From KJV text and Hebrew vocabulary: akal (H398 "devour"), epher (H665 "ashes"), ayin (H369 "not") + olam (H5769 "ever"). Grammar directly states the subject is devoured, becomes ashes, and ceases to exist. PASS.

N-Item Classifications (Tree 4)

N1 -- "The smoke-ascending-forever formula describes permanent memorial of completed destruction, not ongoing process" -- Based on: E2, E3, E4, E8, E10 -- Classified: Cond.

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree this follows from the cited E-items? E2 (Rev 19:3 smoke formula for Babylon) + E8 (Babylon utterly burned) + E10 (Babylon found no more) + E3 (Isa 34:10 smoke forever) + E4 (animals dwell in Edom's ruins). An ECT scholar would acknowledge that the formula applies to Babylon's completed destruction and Edom's ended fire, but would argue Rev 14:11 applies to a different subject. The N-item as stated about the FORMULA itself (not its application to human fate) follows from the cited E-items: the formula is used for completed destructions. PASS.
  • N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only possible conclusion? The formula is applied to entities whose destruction is documented as complete (Babylon, Edom). The only conclusion from the formula's usage in those contexts is that it describes permanent aftermath, not ongoing burning. PASS.
  • N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): Does this add anything beyond the source E-items? It restates what the E-items collectively show about the formula's meaning in its attested uses. PASS.
  • Tree 3 Gates:
  • V1: The implication concerns the meaning of a formula that describes permanent aftermath of destruction. Candidate: COND.
  • Gate 1 (Subject): N/A — concerns formula meaning, not a specific subject.
  • Gate 2 (Grammar): The grammar of the formula in its two verifiable uses (Rev 19:3 for Babylon, Isa 34:10 for Edom) supports this reading.
  • Gate 3 (Genre): The E-items span prophetic (Isa 34) and apocalyptic (Rev 18-19) genres.
  • Gate 4 (Harmony): Consistent with all E-items.
  • Result: Classification: Cond. stands.

N2 -- "Basanismos is not inherently eternal — can describe time-limited events" -- Based on: E9, E13 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree? E9 (Babylon's basanismos in one hour) + E13 (basanismos with five-month limit). Both scholars must acknowledge these are time-limited basanismos occurrences. PASS.
  • N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only conclusion? If basanismos is time-limited in 4 of 6 occurrences, the word is not inherently eternal. PASS.
  • N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): This restates what the E-items show. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral (factual observation about basanismos's semantic range — both sides agree the word can be time-limited).

N3 -- "'Rest not day and night' characterizes activity quality, not guaranteed eternal duration" -- Based on: E11 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree? E11 (Rev 4:8 living creatures "rest not day and night" in praise). Both sides agree this phrase characterizes the uninterrupted nature of the creatures' praise, not that the creatures suffer or are eternally tormented. PASS.
  • N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Is this the only conclusion? The phrase describes the quality of the activity. PASS.
  • N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): Restates what the E-item shows about the phrase. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral (factual observation about what the phrase describes in its non-judgment occurrence — both sides accept the Rev 4:8 meaning).

N4 -- "Revelation communicates through signs/symbols, not literal description" -- Based on: E12 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree that Revelation uses sign-language? Yes — even ECT scholars recognize Revelation as apocalyptic/symbolic literature. The debate is about which elements are symbolic. PASS.
  • N-Test 2 (No interpretation): Semaino means "to signify/communicate through signs." PASS.
  • N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): Restates what semaino in Rev 1:1 means. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral (factual observation about Revelation's genre — both sides accept the book uses symbolic communication).

N5 -- "Different vocabulary is used for different subjects at the lake of fire" -- Based on: E14, E15, E16, E17 -- Classified: Neutral

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree? The vocabulary differentiation is a textual fact: katephagen (devoured, 20:9 for humans), basanisthesontai (tormented, 20:10 for devil/beast/false prophet), thanatos deuteros (second death, 20:14 for humans). Both sides must acknowledge these are different words. PASS.
  • N-Test 2 (No interpretation): The vocabulary differentiation is observable. PASS.
  • N-Test 3 (Zero added concepts): Restates what the E-items show. PASS.
  • Result: Classification: Neutral (factual vocabulary observation both sides accept).

N6 -- "The fire-and-brimstone paradigm produces ashes/destruction" -- Based on: E5, E18, E19, E6, E7 -- Classified: Cond.

  • Gate 0 (Foundation):
  • N-Test 1 (Universal agreement): Would an ECT scholar agree? E5 (God overthrew Sodom), E18 (Luke 17:29 destroyed them all), E19 (2 Pet 2:6 turned to ashes), E6 (Mal 4:1 stubble/burn up), E7 (Mal 4:3 ashes under feet). The RESULT vocabulary across these passages is consistently destruction/ashes. An ECT scholar must acknowledge that the biblical text describes the result of fire-and-brimstone as ashes and destruction. They would argue this applies to temporal judgments, not eschatological ones. However, 2 Pet 2:6 calls Sodom an "example" (hupodeigma) for the ungodly — extending the paradigm to eschatological application.
  • FAIL on N-Test 1: An ECT scholar would argue that the temporal fire-and-brimstone paradigm does not necessarily govern the eschatological application. The extension from temporal to eschatological requires interpretation. This should be classified as I-A, not N.

  • Result: Gate 0 FAILS. Reclassified as I-A (evidence-extending inference — systematizes E-items into a broader claim about the paradigm's eschatological meaning). Position: Cond.
