DOMAIN (1) — 2 Thessalonians 1-3 + 1 Thessalonians 4-5¶
2 Thess 1:1-12 (chapter context — the figure's destruction context)¶
- 1:1-2 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:3-4 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren … for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
- 1:5 [Which is] a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God (ἔνδειγμα τῆς δικαίας κρίσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ), that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer.
- 1:6 Seeing [it is] a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
- 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven (ἐν τῇ ἀποκαλύψει τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ) with his mighty angels,
- 1:8 In flaming fire (ἐν πυρὶ φλογός) taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
- 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction (ὄλεθρον αἰώνιον) from the presence of the Lord (ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ Κυρίου), and from the glory of his power (ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ);
- 1:10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe … in that day.
- 1:11-12 Wherefore also we pray always for you … That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you.
Parsing/annotation (chapter 1, relevant to the figure):
- ἀποκαλύψει τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ (1:7) is a divinely-structured revelation — the same root as ἀποκαλυφθῇ (2:3), ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (2:6), and ἀποκαλυφθήσεται (2:8). Paul pairs the revelation of Christ against the revelation of the lawless one using the same verb stem.
- ὄλεθρον αἰώνιον (1:9) — parallel/companion destruction-word to 2:3's ἀπώλεια and to the consuming verbs ἀνελεῖ and καταργήσει of 2:8. Note: ὄλεθρος (G3639) is distinct from ἀπώλεια (G684) but in NT eschatology they pair (cf. 1 Tim 6:9).
2 Thess 2:1-12 (THE primary passage)¶
2:1 Now we beseech you (Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς), brethren, by the coming (ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας) of our Lord Jesus Christ, and [by] our gathering together unto him (ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ' αὐτόν),
2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind (εἰς τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ νοός), or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand (ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου — perfect indicative ἐνέστηκεν, "has set in / is present").
- TR variant: ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Χριστοῦ ("day of Christ," KJV); N1904 τοῦ Κυρίου. No morphological impact.
2:3 Let no man deceive you (μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ — prohibitive aor. act. subj.) by any means: for [that day shall not come — APODOSIS ELIDED], except there come a falling away first (ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον), and [except] that man of sin be revealed (καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας — aor. pass. subj.), the son of perdition (ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας);
- Variant v.3: τῆς ἀνομίας (N1904, ℵ B 0278 33 81 1739 1881 latt) vs. τῆς ἁμαρτίας (A D Ψ 𝔐 KJV/TR). KJV reads "man of sin." Variant changes lexeme (sin → lawlessness) but both genitives are attributive-of-quality. See G458-anomia.md and G266-hamartia.md.
- Apodosis ellipsis (anacoluthon): the ἐὰν μή clause has no explicit main verb; KJV supplies "[that day shall not come]" implicitly from v.2.
- Five titles: this verse introduces three of the five titles of the figure — (1)
ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας/ἁμαρτίας, (2)ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας, with v.4 adding (3) the participial title, v.8 adding (4)ὁ ἄνομος, and v.9 indirectly referencing (5) his counter-parousia. πρῶτονis adverbial accusative; it orders the apostasia BEFORE the revelation of the man of sin (and before the unstated "day").
2:4 Who opposeth (ὁ ἀντικείμενος — art. pres. mid./pass. dep. ptcp., G480) and exalteth himself (καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος — pres. mid./pass. ptcp., G5229; paired middle voice with reflexive-self register) above all (ἐπὶ πάντα) that is called God (λεγόμενον Θεόν) or that is worshipped (ἢ σέβασμα — G4574, the object-of-worship register); so that he as God sitteth (ὥστε αὐτὸν … καθίσαι — result inf., aor. act. inf. κάθίσαι G2523) in the temple of God (εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ — G3485 naos = inner sanctuary, not G2411 hieron), shewing himself that he is God (ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός — pres. act. ptcp. G584 + reflexive acc. ἑαυτόν + content hoti-clause).
- TR addition: after
ναὸν τοῦ ΘεοῦTR/Byz insertsὡς Θεόν("as God"), which KJV preserves. Critical text omits. - apodeiknymi G584 = "display / exhibit / publicly demonstrate." With reflexive + hoti-clause this is a show-he-is-God speech act: a divinity-claim performed by self-display. Only four NT occurrences (Acts 2:22 of Christ's divine accreditation; Acts 25:7; 1 Cor 4:9; here — the counter-mirror).
- antikeimai + hyperairō paired middles: the only place in the NT where these two middle participles collocate (hyperairō is only 3 NT tokens, all middle). The paired middle voice intensifies the self-focused register (see grammar-ref
paired-middle-participles.md). - OT source for v.4 epi panta legomenon theon: LXX Theod. Dan 11:36
hypsōthēsetai kai megalynthēsetai epi panta theon. The Greekepi panta theonis verbatim shared. See DOMAIN (5). - kathisai aorist infinitive: punctiliar "to seat himself / take his seat" — enthronement/authority-act (the Hebrews-1 "sat down at the right hand" register is the counter-pattern).
2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you (ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς), I told you these things (ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν — impf. act. — "I was repeatedly telling you")?
- The
ταῦτα("these things") has referential content Paul's readers knew but which is not expressed in the letter — a floating anaphoric datum that limits what interpreters can reconstruct.
2:6 And now ye know (καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε — stative perfect indicative) what withholdeth (τὸ κατέχον — neuter art. pres. act. ptcp., G2722), that he might be revealed (εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν — purpose/result articular inf., aor. pass.) in his time (ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ καιρῷ).
- Neuter τὸ κατέχον: designates an impersonal/institutional/abstract restraining power ("the thing that restrains"). Same lemma as v.7's masculine form.
- ἀποκαλυφθῆναι is candidate divine passive (cf. grammar-ref
divine-passive.md): God is the unexpressed agent of the revelation, as He is of other apocalyptic unveilings.
2:7 For the mystery of iniquity (τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας — "For the mystery of the lawlessness already works") doth already work: only he who now letteth (μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι — masculine art. pres. act. ptcp., G2722) [will let], until he be taken out of the way (ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται — temporal ἕως + aor. mid. subj., "until out of the midst he come to be").
- Neuter-to-masculine concord shift (τὸ κατέχον → ὁ κατέχων): the gender shift across one verse-boundary is the crux of restrainer identification. Two interpretive mechanisms (from grammar-ref
concord-shift-neuter-to-masculine.md): - (a) Two different referents (abstract thing in v.6 vs. personal agent in v.7).
- (b) Same referent viewed from two perspectives — an abstract/institutional aspect and a personal-agent aspect (e.g., Roman state/emperor; Spirit/person; office/officeholder).
- ἤδη (already): pairs with 1 John 2:18
ἤδη ἀντίχριστοι πολλοὶ γεγόνασιν; mystery-of-iniquity is present-tense in Paul's own day. - ἐνεργεῖται (pres. mid. ind.): voice note — middle voice of ἐνεργέω; the mystery is self-energizing / inherently operative, not passive.
- ἐκ μέσου γένηται: idiomatic "be removed from the midst," not a direct reference to the restrainer's character. Constructio ad sensum: whatever/whoever the restrainer is, he/it is removable.
2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed (καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος — fut. pass. ind., G601; G459 ὁ ἄνομος = substantival adjective "the lawless one"), whom the Lord shall consume (ὃν ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἀνελεῖ — fut. act. ind. of G337 ἀναιρέω, "slay/destroy") with the spirit of his mouth (τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ — dative of means/instrument; ISA 11:4 LXX allusion), and shall destroy (καὶ καταργήσει — fut. act. ind., G2673 "abolish/render inoperative") with the brightness of his coming (τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ — dative of means, G2015 ἐπιφάνεια + G3952 παρουσία; this doublet occurs only here in Paul).
- Three future indicatives cluster at v.8 — all other finite forms in the pericope are present, imperfect, aorist subjunctive, or perfect. The future tenses are reserved for the climactic revelation-and-destruction panel.
- Two destruction instruments balance chiastically:
pneumati stomatos(Isa 11:4 echo) ||epiphaneia parousias(Christological climax; epiphaneia is the visible-manifestation noun; parousia is the advent-noun). Both are datives of means. - ἀνελεῖ vs. TR ἀναλώσει (G355 "consume, use up"): N1904 and Byzantine majority read ἀνελεῖ; A D F G 1739 latt read ἀναλώσει. Both are fut. act. ind.; lexical variant only.
- TR variant also omits
Ἰησοῦςafterὁ Κύριος— KJV includes.
2:9 [Even him], whose coming (οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία — deliberate lexical collision: same noun παρουσία as v.1 and v.8 of Christ's) is after the working of Satan (κατ' ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ — subjective genitive; Satan is the working source, G1753 energeia + G4567) with all power and signs and lying wonders (ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους — triple instrumental; ψεύδους modifies τέρασιν or all three — Greek ambiguity),
- The counter-parousia. Paul uses the same word for Christ's coming (v.1, v.8) and for the lawless one's coming (v.9). This is deliberate typological mirroring (the figure is the counterfeit of Christ).
- energeia tou Satana: subjective-genitive pattern established in grammar-ref
energeia-subjective-genitive.md. Same grammatical frame as Eph 1:19 (ἐνέργειαν τοῦ κράτους τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ) — but here the agent is Satan. - σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν: standard NT "signs and wonders" doublet (G4592 + G5059). Paul inverts — here these are false signs and wonders, with ψεύδους (of falsehood) as attributive genitive. Paired with Rev 13:13-14 σημεῖα μεγάλα of the second beast / false prophet.
2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness (καὶ ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας — attributive "unrighteousness-deceit") in them that perish (τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις — pres. mid./pass. ptcp., G622 cognate to G684 apōleia — "those in the process of perishing"); because they received not the love of the truth (ἀνθ' ὧν τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο — aor. mid. ind. with ground-clause idiom ἀνθ' ὧν "because, in return for which"), that they might be saved (εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς).
- τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing) is the morphological cognate of ἀπώλεια (perdition v.3). The son of perdition draws into his apoleia those likewise labeled with the same root.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion (καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης — lit. "God sends them a working of delusion"; same noun ἐνέργεια as v.9 but with θεός as subject and πλάνη G4106 as attributive), that they should believe a lie (εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει):
- Three ἐνέργεια subjects in vv.7, 9, 11: the mystery of anomia (v.7 ἐνεργεῖται), Satan (v.9 τοῦ Σατανᾶ), God (v.11 ὁ Θεὸς πέμπει ἐνέργειαν πλάνης). The same verb-family ranges across three agent-types — the divine judicial release of deception follows the rejection of truth.
2:12 That they all might be damned (ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες — aor. pass. subj. G2919 "be judged") who believed not the truth (οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ — aor. act. ptcp. negated), but had pleasure in unrighteousness (ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ).
- The passive subjunctive κριθῶσιν closes the pericope with God as implicit judging agent.
2 Thess 2:13-17 (immediate context — the antithesis)¶
- 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation (εἵλατο ὑμᾶς ὁ Θεὸς ἀπαρχὴν εἰς σωτηρίαν — TR variant ἀπ' ἀρχῆς) through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth (ἐν ἁγιασμῷ πνεύματος καὶ πίστει ἀληθείας):
- 2:14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions (κρατεῖτε τὰς παραδόσεις — G2902 "hold fast" — notably NOT G2722 katechō) which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
- 2:16-17 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, … Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.
Note: The antithesis to the lawlessness-pattern is παράδοσις (tradition/teaching) held fast by the saints. The figure's operation works against truth; the saints' work is holding fast the truth.
2 Thess 3:1-18 (closing context)¶
- 3:1-5 Final exhortations: the word of the Lord have free course; Lord keep from evil; direct hearts into love of God.
- 3:6-15 Withdraw from disorderly brothers — ataktōs (
ἀτάκτως) behavior marked for discipline; work-ethic commands. - 3:16-18 Peace benediction; Paul's own handwriting as authentication mark against forged letters (
ἐπιστολήechoed from 2:2).
1 Thess 4:13-5:11 (the parousia teaching that 2 Thess 2 corrects)¶
- 4:13-14 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep … them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
- 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord (εἰς τὴν παρουσίαν τοῦ Κυρίου) shall not prevent them which are asleep.
- 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
- 4:17 Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air (εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ Κυρίου εἰς ἀέρα): and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
- 5:1-2 But of the times and the seasons (χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν), brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night (ἡμέρα Κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί).
- 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction (αἰφνίδιος … ὄλεθρος) cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
- 5:4-9 Sons-of-light vs. sons-of-darkness discourse; God has not appointed us to wrath (εἰς ὀργήν) but to obtain salvation.
Inter-letter context: The Thessalonian confusion 2 Thess 2:2 corrects ("day of the Lord hath arrived") is the same eschatological horizon 1 Thess 4-5 taught — the letter is a corrective against rushed-realized-eschatology. The παρουσία / ἡμέρα Κυρίου pair spans both letters.
DOMAIN (2) — Pauline naos corpus (decides literal vs. figurative)¶
1 Cor 3:16-17 — believers as naos¶
- 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God (ναὸς Θεοῦ ἐστε), and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you (τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν)?
- 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God (τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ), him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy (ὁ ναὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἅγιός ἐστιν), which [temple] ye are.
Parsing note: ναὸς Θεοῦ ἐστε — predicate-nominative construction: "a temple-of-God you are" (collective/corporate). G3485 naos (inner sanctuary), not G2411 hieron. The exact construct ὁ ναὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ appears here — identical surface form as 2 Thess 2:4.
1 Cor 6:19 — body as naos¶
- 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple (ναός) of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Parse: τὸ σῶμα ὑμῶν ναὸς τοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν Ἁγίου Πνεύματός ἐστιν. Individual body = naos. Indwelling agent is the Holy Spirit.
2 Cor 6:16 — ye are the naos of the living God¶
- 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? (τίς δὲ συγκατάθεσις ναῷ Θεοῦ μετὰ εἰδώλων;) for ye are the temple of the living God (ἡμεῖς γὰρ ναὸς Θεοῦ ἐσμεν ζῶντος); as God hath said, I will dwell in them (ἐνοικήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς), and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Parse: The ναός / εἴδωλα antithesis is exactly the counter to 2 Thess 2:4's man of sin who sits in God's naos yet displays himself as divine. Paul cites Lev 26:11-12 / Ezek 37:27 — God's indwelling in His people IS the temple.
Eph 2:19-22 — building growing into a holy naos¶
- 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God (οἰκεῖοι τοῦ Θεοῦ);
- 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone (ἀκρογωνιαίου);
- 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord (πᾶσα οἰκοδομὴ συναρμολογουμένη αὔξει εἰς ναὸν ἅγιον ἐν Κυρίῳ);
- 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit (εἰς κατοικητήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν Πνεύματι).
Parse: ναὸν ἅγιον ἐν Κυρίῳ — this is the growing organic structure of the believing community, Christ as cornerstone, apostles/prophets as foundation. κατοικητήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ reinforces the in-dwelling register. This is THE primary text Bohr/Newton/Clarke use to route "temple of God = church" in 2 Thess 2:4.
1 Tim 3:15 — house of God (not naos but complementary)¶
- 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God (ἐν οἴκῳ Θεοῦ), which is the church of the living God (ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐκκλησία Θεοῦ ζῶντος), the pillar and ground of the truth (στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας).
Parse: οἶκος not ναός here, but the principle is identical — the ekklēsia is the locus of God's dwelling for the Pauline corpus.
1 Pet 2:4-10 — living stones / spiritual house¶
- 2:4 To whom coming, [as unto] a living stone (λίθον ζῶντα), disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, [and] precious,
- 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house (οἶκος πνευματικός), an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
- 2:6 … Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone (ἀκρογωνιαῖον), elect, precious …
- 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.
Parse: 1 Peter uses οἶκος πνευματικός (spiritual house), not naos, but the building-metaphor cluster (lithos, akrogōniaios, oikodomē) is the same as Eph 2:19-22. Together these establish the NT pattern: believers are the living, in-built sanctuary.
Rev 11:1-2 — literal vs. symbolic naos¶
- 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God (ἔγειρε καὶ μέτρησον τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ), and the altar, and them that worship therein.
- 11:2 But the court which is without the temple (τὴν αὐλὴν τὴν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ναοῦ) leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months.
Parse: Revelation 11 apocalyptically splits ναός (measured; associated with worshippers) from αὐλή (court; given to Gentiles). This is measurement-by-symbolic-boundary, not literal Herodian temple data. The 42 months (= 1260 days = time-times-half) matches Dan 7:25.
John 2:19-21 — Christ's body as naos¶
- 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up (λύσατε τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον).
- 2:20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple (ὁ ναὸς οὗτος) in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
- 2:21 But he spake of the temple of his body (περὶ τοῦ ναοῦ τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ).
Parse: Johannine witness: naos can refer to Christ's body. The earliest Christian use of ναός applies it metaphorically to a person.
Rev 21:22 — no naos in the eschatological city¶
- 21:22 And I saw no temple therein (ναὸν οὐκ εἶδον ἐν αὐτῇ): for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it (ὁ γὰρ Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὁ Παντοκράτωρ ναὸς αὐτῆς ἐστιν καὶ τὸ Ἀρνίον).
DOMAIN (3) — Daniel 7 (little horn)¶
- 7:1-6 Four beasts from the sea (lion, bear, leopard, terrible fourth beast).
- 7:7 After this I saw … a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it [was] diverse from all the beasts that [were] before it; and it had ten horns.
- 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn (qeren ze'eyrah), before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn [were] eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things (u-pum memalal rabrebāan).
- 7:9-10 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit … the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
- 7:11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld [even] till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.
- 7:12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
- 7:13-14 Son of Man comes with the clouds, receives dominion, glory, kingdom.
- 7:17 These great beasts, which are four, [are] four kings — malkhīn (Aramaic "kings"). v.23 interprets this as "kingdoms" (
malkhū). Note this is the single explicit scriptural precedent for king/kingdom equivalence — relevant for whetherὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας+ singular must denote an individual person. - 7:20 And of the ten horns that [were] in his head, and [of] the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even [of] that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look [was] more stout than his fellows.
- 7:21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
- 7:22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
- 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth.
- 7:24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom [are] ten kings [that] shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
- 7:25 And he shall speak [great] words against the most High (u-milīn l-tsad 'illā'āh y-mallīl), and shall wear out the saints of the most High (u-l-qaddīshē 'elyōnīn y-ballē), and think to change times and laws (v-yis-bar l-hashnāyāh zimnīn v-dāt): and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time ('ad 'iddān v-'iddānīn u-plag 'iddān).
- 7:26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy [it] unto the end.
- 7:27 And the kingdom … shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High.
Parsing/annotation:
- u-pum memalal rabrebāan ("and a mouth speaking great things") — LXX Theod. στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα. This exact phrase is verbatim quoted in Rev 13:5 (στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα). See grammar-ref rev-13-5.md.
- 'iddān v-'iddānīn u-plag 'iddān ("time and times and dividing of a time") — establishes the 3.5 time-units figure later matched by Rev 12:14 (καιρὸν καὶ καιροὺς καὶ ἥμισυ καιροῦ), Rev 11:2-3 (42 months / 1260 days), and Rev 13:5 (42 months).
- y-ballē (Aramaic pael "to wear out, exhaust") — the idea is attrition, not outright destruction. Saints delivered into his hand for 3.5 times.
- y-hashnāyāh zimnīn v-dāt ("change times and law"): programmatic opposition to divine temporal/legal order — conceptually paralleled by Paul's ἀνομία (anti-law) register. See grammar-ref dan-7-25-26.md.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers: - Self-exaltation / great words against God (Dan 7:8, 11, 20, 25 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4). - War against saints (Dan 7:21 ↔ 2 Thess 2 destruction of saints implicit in the pericope's opposition register). - Change of times-and-laws (Dan 7:25 ↔ anomia-institutionalized, 2 Thess 2:3, 7, 8). - Judgment-based destruction (Dan 7:26 "take away his dominion, to consume" ↔ 2 Thess 2:8 ἀνελεῖ + καταργήσει). - Time-scope: "time, times, and dividing of time" (Dan 7:25) — 3.5 periods; this is the primary OT time-scope text for a multi-century rather than momentary figure.
DOMAIN (4) — Daniel 8 (king of fierce countenance)¶
- 8:1-8 Ram with two horns (Media-Persia); he-goat (Greece) with notable horn (first king), great horn broken, four notable horns in its place.
- 8:9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant [land] (ha-tsevī).
- 8:10 And it waxed great, [even] to the host of heaven; and it cast down [some] of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
- 8:11 Yea, he magnified [himself] even to the prince of the host (v-'ad sar ha-tsavā' higdīl), and by him the daily [sacrifice] was taken away (ha-tāmīd), and the place of his sanctuary was cast down (hushlakh m-khōn miqdāshō).
- 8:12 And an host was given [him] against the daily [sacrifice] by reason of transgression (b-pesha'), and it cast down the truth ('emet) to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.
- 8:13 … How long [shall be] the vision [concerning] the daily [sacrifice], and the transgression of desolation (ha-pesha' shōmēm), to give both the sanctuary (qōdesh) and the host to be trodden under foot?
- 8:14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed (v-nitsdaq qōdesh — "and the sanctuary shall be justified/vindicated").
- 8:15-22 Gabriel's interpretation (ram = Media-Persia; rough goat = Greece; first king = Alexander; four kingdoms).
- 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full (k-hatēm ha-pōsh'īm), a king of fierce countenance (melekh 'az pānīm), and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
- 8:24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power (v-lō' v-khōchō): and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people (v-hishchīt 'atsūmīm v-'am q-dōshīm).
- 8:25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify [himself] in his heart (u-bi-l-vāvō yagdīl), and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes (v-'al sar sārīm ya'amōd); but he shall be broken without hand (u-b-'efes yad yishāvēr).
Parsing/annotation:
- higdīl (Hiphil) / yagdīl (Qal) — the verb גדל (to become great, magnify) — semantic link to LXX μεγαλύνω which is the same root Paul echoes in ὑπεραιρόμενος (though Paul uses compound hyper-airō). See grammar-ref dan-8-23-25.md.
- sar sārīm "prince of princes" — superlative construct; the rebellion is against the highest princely authority.
- b-'efes yad yishāvēr "without hand he shall be broken" — Niphal passive, agent-denying idiom. Destruction is by divine agency, not human. Direct conceptual match to 2 Thess 2:8 τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ (destruction by Christ's advent, not human armies).
- ha-tāmīd (the continual/daily) — taken away; sanctuary cast down.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers: - Self-magnification (Dan 8:11, 25 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4). - Not by own power / yet mighty (Dan 8:24 ↔ 2 Thess 2:9 "according to energeia of Satan"). - Destruction of saints/holy-people (Dan 8:24 ↔ implicit in 2 Thess 2 by reading-chain). - Broken without hand (Dan 8:25 ↔ 2 Thess 2:8 destruction by parousia/epiphaneia, not by human force).
DOMAIN (5) — Daniel 11:30-45 (self-exalting king)¶
- 11:30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant (berīt qōdesh): so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
- 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength (v-chil-l-lū ha-miqdāsh ha-mā'ōz), and shall take away the daily (v-hēsīrū ha-tāmīd), and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate (v-nāt-nū ha-shiqqūts m-shōmēm).
- 11:32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do [exploits].
- 11:33-35 Those of understanding shall fall … to try them, to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end.
- 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god (v-yitrōmām v-yitgad-dēl 'al kol 'ēl), and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods (v-'al 'ēl 'ēlīm y-dabbēr nifl-ā'ōt), and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
- 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers ('elōhē 'avōtāyv), nor the desire of women (chemdat nāshīm), nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all (kī 'al kōl yitgad-dāl).
- 11:38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces (lě'elōah mā'uzzīm — "Mahuzzim"): and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
- 11:39-45 Campaign against king of south and north; enters the glorious land; plants the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
Parsing/annotation:
- yitrōmām (Hithpolel, "exalt himself up") + yitgad-dēl (Hithpael, "magnify himself") — two reflexive/reciprocal self-exaltation verbs. LXX Theod: ὑψωθήσεται καὶ μεγαλυνθήσεται ἐπὶ πάντα θεόν.
- Direct verbal match with 2 Thess 2:4: LXX-Theod Dan 11:36 ἐπὶ πάντα θεόν = 2 Thess 2:4 ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα. The Greek ἐπὶ πάντα … θεόν is directly shared. Paul intensifies by inserting λεγόμενον ("so-called") and doubling with ἢ σέβασμα.
- chemdat nāshīm — "desire of women" (Matthew Henry routes this to celibacy register of 1 Tim 4:3 κωλυόντων γαμεῖν; but the Hebrew more naturally denotes the natural affection for women or a specific desired woman).
- mā'uzzīm ("fortresses, strengths") — plural; "god of strongholds" or "god of fortresses"; Matthew Henry links to saints/patron-veneration; the text is semantically ambiguous between military and religious registers.
- Grammar-ref: see dan-11-36-37.md for full alignment table.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- ἐπὶ πάντα θεόν verbatim Greek (Dan 11:36 LXX ↔ 2 Thess 2:4).
- Self-magnification (Hithpolel / Hithpael ↔ Greek middle ὑπεραιρόμενος).
- "Speak marvelous things against God of gods" (Dan 11:36 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4).
- "Magnify himself above all" (Dan 11:37 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 "above all called God or sebasma").
- End "none shall help him" (Dan 11:45 ↔ 2 Thess 2:8 destruction).
DOMAIN (6) — Revelation 13 (parallel beasts)¶
- 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy (ὀνόματα βλασφημίας).
- 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority (ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ δράκων τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξουσίαν μεγάλην).
- 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death (ὡς ἐσφαγμένην εἰς θάνατον); and his deadly wound was healed (ἐθεραπεύθη): and all the world wondered after the beast.
- 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
- 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies (στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα καὶ βλασφημίας — Dan 7:8 LXX verbatim quote); and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months (μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο — = 1260 days = time-times-half = Dan 7:25).
- 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven (βλασφημῆσαι τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ, τοὺς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ σκηνοῦντας).
- 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them (δοθῆναι αὐτῷ πόλεμον ποιῆσαι μετὰ τῶν ἁγίων καὶ νικῆσαι αὐτούς): and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
- 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain.
- 13:9-10 Ear to hear; captivity and sword pattern; patience of saints.
- 13:11-18 Second beast (earth) with two horns like a lamb, speaks as dragon, great signs including fire from heaven, deceives them that dwell on earth, image of the beast, mark in right hand or forehead, number 666.
Parsing/annotation:
- ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ δράκων … δύναμιν … θρόνον … ἐξουσίαν — dragon giving exemplifies the same subjective-genitive pattern as 2 Thess 2:9 κατ' ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ.
- στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα — Dan 7:8 LXX Theod verbatim. Same "mouth speaking great things" pattern as Dan 7:25.
- μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο — 42 months = 1260 days = time-times-half = Dan 7:25 / Dan 12:7.
- δοθῆναι αὐτῷ — divine passive "it was given to him" — implicit agent is God; temporary permission to act.
- See grammar-ref rev-13-1-10.md and rev-13-5.md.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers (structural — see revs-46 SP115 seven-point parallel):
- Satanic empowerment (Rev 13:2 ↔ 2 Thess 2:9 κατ' ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ).
- Blasphemy / self-exaltation (Rev 13:5-6 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 antikeimai + hyperairō).
- War on saints (Rev 13:7 ↔ Dan 7:21, 25 → 2 Thess 2 exposed-saints register).
- Deception (Rev 13:14 ↔ 2 Thess 2:10 ἀπάτη ἀδικίας).
- Signs and wonders (Rev 13:13 — second beast ↔ 2 Thess 2:9 σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους).
- Time: 42 months = Dan 7:25 time-times-half; 2 Thess 2:7 "mystery already works" implies multi-period.
- Final fate: 19:20 lake of fire ↔ 2 Thess 2:8 destruction.
- SP117 complication: Paul's ONE entity maps functionally to BOTH Rev 13 beasts (blasphemy / war on saints = first beast; sign-working deception = second beast). This is an exegetical datum requiring either synthesis or differentiation.
DOMAIN (7) — Revelation 17 (beast + harlot)¶
- 17:1-3 Judgment of the great whore; she sits upon many waters; she commits fornication with kings of the earth; drunken with the wine of her fornication. John carried in the Spirit into the wilderness: sees a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
- 17:4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet … having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
- 17:5 And upon her forehead [was] a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH
- 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.
- 17:7-8 I will tell thee the mystery of the woman … The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition (ὑπάγει εἰς ἀπώλειαν): and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life.
- 17:9-10 Seven heads = seven mountains, where the woman sitteth; seven kings: five fallen, one is, other not yet come; when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
- 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition (εἰς ἀπώλειαν ὑπάγει).
- 17:12-14 Ten horns = ten kings; receive power one hour with the beast; make war with the Lamb, Lamb shall overcome them.
- 17:16 Ten horns hate the whore, shall make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh, burn her with fire.
- 17:18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
Parsing/annotation:
- ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟΝ … Η ΜΗΤΗΡ ΤΩΝ ΠΟΡΝΩΝ — capitalized by KJV (reflecting critical text's treatment as a title-inscription). Lexical link to 2 Thess 2:7 τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας.
- ὑπάγει εἰς ἀπώλειαν (17:8, 11) — uses ἀπώλεια (G684), the same lexeme as 2 Thess 2:3 ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας. The beast "goes into the same destination" that defines the son of perdition. Lexical bridge.
- ἔστι ἐκ τῶν ἑπτά (17:11) "is of the seven" — the eighth emerges from within the seven, suggesting continuity/succession rather than wholly new entity.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- μυστήριον + evil-system (Rev 17:5 ↔ 2 Thess 2:7).
- ἀπώλεια as destination (Rev 17:8, 11 ↔ 2 Thess 2:3 "son of apōleia").
- Seated authority over kings / peoples (Rev 17:3, 15 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 καθίσαι).
- Blasphemy names (Rev 17:3 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4).
- Blood of saints / martyrs (Rev 17:6 ↔ Dan 7:21, 25 and 2 Thess 2 register).
DOMAIN (8) — Johannine antichristos (1 Jn 2-4; 2 Jn 7)¶
1 John 2:18-23¶
- 2:18 Little children, it is the last time (ἐσχάτη ὥρα ἐστίν): and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come (ὁ ἀντίχριστος ἔρχεται), even now are there many antichrists (καὶ νῦν ἀντίχριστοι πολλοὶ γεγόνασιν); whereby we know that it is the last time.
- 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would [no doubt] have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us (ἐφανερώθησαν ὅτι οὐκ εἰσὶν πάντες ἐξ ἡμῶν).
- 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
- 2:21-22 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? (ὁ ἀρνούμενος ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ Χριστός) He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son (οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἀντίχριστος, ὁ ἀρνούμενος τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τὸν Υἱόν).
- 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [(but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also].
1 John 4:1-6¶
- 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
- 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh (ἐληλυθότα ἐν σαρκί) is of God:
- 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist (τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ τοῦ ἀντιχρίστου), whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world (καὶ νῦν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἐστὶν ἤδη).
- 4:4-6 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them … He that knoweth God heareth us … Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error (τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς πλάνης).
2 John 1:7¶
- 2 Jn 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world (πλάνοι εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸν κόσμον), who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist (οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος).
Parsing/annotation:
- Five Johannine tokens of G500: ἀντίχριστος sg (1 Jn 2:18a, 2:22; 2 Jn 1:7); ἀντίχριστοι pl (1 Jn 2:18b); ἀντιχρίστου gen sg (1 Jn 4:3).
- Paul never uses G500. John never uses G459 ἄνομος or G684 ἀπώλεια of a figure. The common identification of the two is by inference and theme-matching, not by shared vocabulary.
- ἤδη γεγόνασιν / νῦν ἤδη ἐστίν: same "already-now" register as 2 Thess 2:7 ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται — both authors insist the eschatological opposition is present-tense, not purely future. See grammar-ref 1jn-2-18-23-antichrist.md.
- Christological denial is the Johannine diagnostic of antichristos — denial that Jesus is the Christ, denial of the Father-and-Son, denial that Jesus is come in the flesh. Paul's ὁ ἄνομος has a different diagnostic register (self-exaltation, sitting in naos, opposing every god/sebasma) — overlap is structural, not lexical.
- Plural "many antichrists" (1 Jn 2:18) — allows distributed/multiple fulfillment contemporaneous with John's writing; singular ὁ ἀντίχριστος (1 Jn 2:18a, 2:22; 2 Jn 7) allows a specific/climactic figure.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- Already-operative, not-yet-climactic (1 Jn 2:18; 4:3 ↔ 2 Thess 2:7).
- Deception (1 Jn 4:6 πνεῦμα πλάνης; 2 Jn 7 πλάνοι ↔ 2 Thess 2:9-11 ἀπάτη ἀδικίας, ἐνέργειαν πλάνης).
- From-within movement (1 Jn 2:19 "went out from us" ↔ 2 Thess 2:3 ἀποστασία).
- Christological denial (John) vs. self-deification (Paul) — lateral similarity, not vocabulary identity.
DOMAIN (9) — Olivet abomination (Mat 24:15; Mk 13:14)¶
Matthew 24:1-28 (Olivet excerpts)¶
- 24:1-2 Jesus' statement that not one stone of the temple (ἱερόν) shall be left upon another.
- 24:3 Disciples' question: when shall these things be, and what shall be the sign of thy coming (τῆς σῆς παρουσίας), and of the end of the world?
- 24:4-5 Take heed that no man deceive you (μή τις ὑμᾶς πλανήσῃ), for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
- 24:6-14 Wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, persecution of saints, apostasy (offense), false prophets, abounding anomia (πληθυνθῆναι τὴν ἀνομίαν), the love of many waxing cold; the gospel preached in all the world.
- 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation (τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως), spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (ἑστὸς ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ), (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
- 24:16-22 Flee to the mountains, great tribulation, for the elect's sake those days shortened.
- 24:23-28 False Christs and false prophets shall arise, and shall shew great signs and wonders (δώσουσιν σημεῖα μεγάλα καὶ τέρατα); insomuch that, if possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Mark 13:14¶
- 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not (ἑστηκότα ὅπου οὐ δεῖ), (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains.
Luke 21:20¶
- 21:20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.
Parsing/annotation:
- βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως — Matthean Greek = LXX Dan 12:11 verbatim.
- ἑστὸς ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ (Matt) vs. ἑστηκότα ὅπου οὐ δεῖ (Mark) — neuter vs. masculine perfect participle; Mark's form is masculine, suggesting a personal referent; Matthew's is neuter, matching βδέλυγμα (neuter noun). Constructio ad sensum from neuter to masculine mirrors 2 Thess 2:6-7.
- Luke substitutes "Jerusalem compassed with armies" — clearly historical/military reference; suggests Luke is giving the AD 70 horizon reading, whereas Matt/Mark preserve the broader Daniel citation.
- See grammar-ref mat-24-15-mk-13-14-abomination.md.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- "Standing in the holy place" (Matt 24:15 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 "sits in the naos of God").
- Great signs and wonders by false Christs (Matt 24:24 ↔ 2 Thess 2:9 σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους).
- Deception register (Matt 24:4-5, 11, 24 ↔ 2 Thess 2:9-11).
- Abounding anomia (Matt 24:12 πληθυνθῆναι τὴν ἀνομίαν ↔ 2 Thess 2:3, 7, 8 anomia cluster — verbal identity).
- Paired parousia (Matt 24:3 σῆς παρουσίας ↔ 2 Thess 2:1, 8 Christ's parousia vs. 2:9 counter-parousia).
DOMAIN (10) — Isa 14 / Ezek 28 self-deification + Isa 11:4 destruction¶
Isaiah 14:12-15 (Lucifer / king of Babylon)¶
- 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer (hēlēl ben-shaḥar, "day star, son of the dawn"), son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
- 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God ('a'aleh shāmayim, mimma'al l-kōkh-vē 'ēl 'ārīm kis-'ī): I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north (v-'ēshēv b-har mō'ēd b-yark-tē tsāphōn):
- 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High ('edammeh l-'elyōn).
- 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Ezekiel 28:2-9 (prince of Tyre)¶
- 28:2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus (nāgīd tsōr), Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart [is] lifted up, and thou hast said, I [am] a God, I sit [in] the seat of God, in the midst of the seas ('ēl 'ānī, mōshav 'elōhīm yāshavtī b-lēv yammīm); yet thou [art] a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
- 28:6 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;
- 28:7-8 I will bring strangers … they shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of [them that are] slain in the midst of the seas.
- 28:9 Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I [am] God? but thou [shalt be] a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.
Ezekiel 28:12-19 (king of Tyre — additional material)¶
- 28:12-15 Perfect in beauty, in Eden, anointed cherub, upon the holy mountain of God, perfect in ways from the day of creation till iniquity was found in thee.
- 28:16-19 Cast as profane out of the mountain of God; heart lifted up because of beauty; cast to the ground; fire brought forth from the midst of thee; brought to ashes.
Isaiah 11:4 (destruction template for 2 Thess 2:8)¶
- 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth (v-hikkāh 'erets b-shevet pīv), and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked (u-v-rūach s-phātāyv yāmīt rāshā').
LXX Isa 11:4: πατάξει γῆν τῷ λόγῳ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν πνεύματι διὰ χειλέων ἀνελεῖ ἀσεβῆ. — direct Greek source of 2 Thess 2:8 ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ. The verb ἀνελεῖ and the πνεύματι … στόματος pair are verbatim LXX Isa 11:4.
Parsing/annotation:
- Isa 14:13-14 sit-motif: v-'ēshēv b-har mō'ēd ("I will sit upon the mount of the congregation"). The throne/seat claim is the OT template for 2 Thess 2:4's εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καθίσαι. Both passages link sitting with self-deification.
- Ezek 28:2 sit-motif: mōshav 'elōhīm yāshavtī ("I sit in the seat of God") — even more direct match to 2 Thess 2:4 "sits in the temple of God displaying himself that he is God." The assertion 'ēl 'ānī ("I am God") is the direct OT antecedent to ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός.
- Isa 14:14 'edammeh l-'elyōn ("I will be like the most High") — LXX ὅμοιος ἔσομαι τῷ ὑψίστῳ. Self-comparison-with-God register.
- See grammar-ref isa-14-ezek-28-self-deification.md.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- Self-deification claim (Isa 14:13-14 / Ezek 28:2 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4).
- Sit-in-divine-seat motif (Isa 14:13; Ezek 28:2 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 καθίσαι).
- "I am God" claim (Ezek 28:2 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός).
- Destruction by breath/mouth (Isa 11:4 ↔ 2 Thess 2:8 πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος).
- Cast down at the end (Isa 14:15; Ezek 28:16-19 ↔ 2 Thess 2:8 destruction).
DOMAIN (11) — 1 Tim 4 / 2 Tim 3 / Jude / 2 Pet apostasy chain¶
1 Timothy 4:1-5¶
- 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith (ἐν ὑστέροις καιροῖς ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως — fut. mid. ind. of G868 ἀφίστημι, verbal cognate of G646 ἀποστασία), giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
- 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
- 4:3 Forbidding to marry (κωλυόντων γαμεῖν), and commanding to abstain from meats (ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων), which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
- 4:4-5 For every creature of God is good … sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
2 Timothy 3:1-9¶
- 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come (ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις ἐνστήσονται καιροὶ χαλεποί).
- 3:2-5 Men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
- 3:6-9 Creep into houses, lead captive silly women; resist the truth; men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith; their folly shall be manifest.
2 Timothy 4:3-4¶
- 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Acts 20:29-30 (Paul's Miletus warning)¶
- 20:29-30 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you (εἰσελεύσονται λύκοι βαρεῖς εἰς ὑμᾶς), not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise (ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν ἀναστήσονται ἄνδρες), speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Acts 21:21 (the only other NT use of ἀποστασία)¶
- 21:21 And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses (ἀποστασίαν … ἀπὸ Μωϋσέως), saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.
2 Peter 2:1-3¶
- 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies (αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας), even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction (ἀπώλειαν).
- 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways (ταῖς ἀπωλείαις αὐτῶν); by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
Jude 1:4¶
- 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation (οἱ πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι εἰς τοῦτο τὸ κρίμα), ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness (τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν χάριτα μετατιθέντες εἰς ἀσέλγειαν), and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- Apostesontai / apostasia cognates — 1 Tim 4:1 G868 vs. 2 Thess 2:3 G646; same root.
- Latter-times / last-days marker (1 Tim 4:1, 2 Tim 3:1 ↔ 2 Thess 2:3 "the apostasia first").
- Doctrine of devils / seducing spirits (1 Tim 4:1 ↔ 2 Thess 2:9 "working of Satan").
- Form of godliness / denying the power (2 Tim 3:5 ↔ 2 Thess 2:4 — religious fraud register).
- Matthew-Henry chain: 1 Tim 4:3 κωλυόντων γαμεῖν ↔ Dan 11:37 chemdat nāshīm ("desire of women") — the proposed papal-celibacy identification (to be evaluated biblically, not adopted).
- Wolves arising from within (Acts 20:29-30 — εξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν) ↔ 2 Thess 2:3 apostasy from-within register.
- αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας / ἀπώλεια (2 Pet 2:1-3) — the same ἀπώλεια-root used for the man of sin (G684).
DOMAIN (12) — Judas John 17:12 (the only other NT "son of perdition")¶
John 17:11-12¶
- 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we [are].
- 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost (οὐδεὶς ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπώλετο — aor. mid. ind., G622), but the son of perdition (εἰ μὴ ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας); that the scripture might be fulfilled (ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ).
Parsing/annotation:
- ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας — verbatim match to 2 Thess 2:3. These are the only two NT occurrences of this exact articular construct (Judas, 2 Thess man of sin). The construction is a Semitic destiny-genitive ("son of [destined for] destruction"; cf. H1121 ben + H6 'ābad "son-of-perishing").
- ἀπώλετο is the verb cognate of ἀπώλεια — lexically reinforces Judas's destiny-identification.
- ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ — Judas's fall fulfills scripture (cf. Ps 41:9 "mine own familiar friend ... which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me" — cited by Jesus John 13:18).
2 Thess 2 overlap markers:
- ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας verbatim match.
- Betrayer-from-within paradigm: Judas was one of the twelve (insider); 2 Thess 2:3 man of sin emerges after an ἀποστασία (departure from prior standing). The Judas-parallel routes the man of sin figure as a betrayer-from-within-the-community, not an external foe.
- Scripture-fulfillment register (Jn 17:12 ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ ↔ 2 Thess 2 pattern of prophecy-fulfillment).
- Destiny-genitive: both figures characterized by and bound for ἀπώλεια; Rev 17:8, 11 extends the chain to the beast (ὑπάγει εἰς ἀπώλειαν).

Concept-Context Summary¶
Raw output at raw-data/concept-context.txt.
