=== Hebrews 11:32 === Καὶ τί ἔτι λέγω; ἐπιλείψει με γὰρ διηγούμενον ὁ χρόνος περὶ Γεδεών, Βαράκ, Σαμψών, Ἰεφθάε, Δαυείδ τε καὶ Σαμουὴλ καὶ τῶν προφητῶν,
Key word Lemma Strong Parsing λέγω λέγω G3004 V-PAS-1S "should I speak" pres.act.subj.1sg ἐπιλείψει ἐπιλείπω G1952 V-FAI-3S "will fail" διηγούμενον διηγέομαι G1334 V-PNP-ASM "recounting/telling" [pres.M/P.ptcp — COGNATE concept to LXX Jdg 5:11 where διηγέομαι renders Hebrew תנה — same verb the author of Heb 11 uses for "recounting" the heroes' deeds] Ἰεφθάε Ἰεφθάε G2422 N-PRI "Jephthah" (indeclinable)
NOTE: Heb 11:32 LISTS the names — Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, prophets — but provides NO specific commendation in this verse. Commendations come in the aorist verbs of vv. 33-34.
=== Hebrews 11:33 — First AORIST CLUSTER === οἳ διὰ πίστεως κατηγωνίσαντο βασιλείας, ἠργάσαντο δικαιοσύνην, ἐπέτυχον ἐπαγγελιῶν, ἔφραξαν στόματα λεόντων,
"who through faith [X-aorist-verb]..."
Verb Lemma Strong Parsing Semantic domain κατηγωνίσαντο καταγωνίζομαι G2610 V-ADI-3P conquered kingdoms (military victory) ἠργάσαντο ἐργάζομαι G2038 V-ADI-3P wrought righteousness (just rule) ἐπέτυχον ἐπιτυγχάνω G2013 V-2AAI-3P obtained promises (received oracle) ἔφραξαν φράσσω G5420 V-AAI-3P stopped mouths of lions (Daniel, Samson, David)
ALL four verbs = aorist indicative 3rd plural — describe DISCRETE acts of military-deliverance and administrative-righteousness, NOT priestly/cultic acts.
=== Hebrews 11:34 — Second AORIST CLUSTER === ἔσβεσαν δύναμιν πυρός, ἔφυγον στόματα μαχαίρης, ἐδυναμώθησαν ἀπὸ ἀσθενείας, ἐγενήθησαν ἰσχυροὶ ἐν πολέμῳ, παρεμβολὰς ἔκλιναν ἀλλοτρίων.
Verb Lemma Strong Parsing Semantic domain ἔσβεσαν σβέννυμι G4570 V-AAI-3P quenched violence of fire (Dan 3 furnace) ἔφυγον φεύγω G5343 V-2AAI-3P escaped sword's edge ἐδυναμώθησαν δυναμόω G1412 V-API-3P were strengthened from weakness ἐγενήθησαν ἰσχυροὶ γίνομαι+ἰσχυρός V-AOI-3P + A became mighty in war ἔκλιναν κλίνω G2827 V-AAI-3P turned to flight armies of aliens
ALL nine aorist-verbs in vv. 33-34 belong to the military-deliverance semantic field — armies defeated, promises received, mouths of lions shut, fire quenched, sword escaped, weakness strengthened, battle-valor gained, enemy camps turned.
NONE of the nine aorists describes a priestly/cultic act, a vow, a sacrifice, or any action specifically marriageable to Jdg 11:30-31 or 11:39 (the vow or its fulfillment). Every aorist maps naturally to Jdg 11:29 + 11:32-33 — Jephthah's SPIRIT-empowered military campaign against Ammon, 20 cities smitten, Ammon subdued.
CONTROLS (same principle elsewhere in Heb 11): - Samson — κατηγωνίσαντο + ἐδυναμώθησαν cover his lion, jawbone, and temple- pull-down; Heb 11 does NOT endorse his Philistine wife (Jdg 14:1-3) or his visit to the harlot (Jdg 16:1). - David — ἐργάσαντο δικαιοσύνην; Heb 11 does NOT endorse his Bathsheba/Uriah affair. - Gideon — κατηγωνίσαντο; Heb 11 does NOT endorse his gold-ephod idolatry (Jdg 8:27). - Barak — ἐπέτυχον ἐπαγγελιῶν (received the promise Deborah spoke).
THE FAITH-ROLL COMMENDS DISCRETE FAITH-ACTS, NOT WHOLE BIOGRAPHIES. Heb 11:32 is therefore SYMMETRICAL on the Jephthah-vow question — it commends his faith in the Ammonite campaign (ch. 11:29-33) without saying anything one way or the other about the vow. The vow is not among the nine aorists; the military deliverance is.
