Cross-Testament Parallels
================================================================ CROSS-TESTAMENT PARALLELS + PARALLEL-VOW ANALYSIS Source: cross_testament_parallels_v2.py (attempted — see note); hand- compiled from library entries + verse retrieval ================================================================
NOTE ON TOOL FAILURE: cross_testament_parallels_v2.py returned "Verse not found" for every book-code variant of Jdg 11:31 and Jdg 11:39 attempted: - "JDG 11:31" — not found - "Judg 11:31" — not found - "Judges 11:31" — not found - "JDG 11:39" — not found (both hybrid-ot and hybrid-nt) - "Judges 11:31" --find-nt / --find-ot — not found
The indexed parallels database appears not to cover these particular verses (possibly a gap in the v2 index build). This has been noted to the analysis agent; the parallel-verse data below is compiled manually from library entries, verse retrieval, and concept_context.py output (which worked).
================================================================ PARALLEL VOW CONSTRUCTIONS (protasis im + weqatal apodosis) ================================================================
| Passage | Vower | Protasis | Apodosis | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 28:20-22 | Jacob | im yihye elohim immadi | wehayah YHWH li leelohim + | Tithe paid; Jacob lived |
| asser aasserennu | ||||
| Num 21:2 | Israel | im naton titten et ha'am | wehacharamti et areihem | Cities devoted (cherem) — |
| hazzeh beyadi | (SINGLE weqatal apodosis) | JUDICIAL BAN, not sacrifice | ||
| Jdg 11:30-31 | Jephthah | im naton titten et bnei | wehayah hayotze... wehayah | CONTESTED |
| ammon beyadi | laYHWH wehaalitihu olah | |||
| (TRIPLE weqatal apodosis) | ||||
| 1 Sam 1:11 | Hannah | im ra'oh tireh... wezechartani... | unetattiw laYHWH kol yemei | Samuel LIVED — lifelong |
| venatatta... zera anashim | chayyav + razor prohibition | sanctuary service | ||
| 2 Sam 15:7-8 | Absalom | im ya'shiv yeshiveni YHWH | veavadti et YHWH | Absalom pretended — plot cover |
| yerushalaim | ||||
| Num 21:2 | Israel | (same as above) | (above) |
OBSERVATIONS: 1. ALL five vow constructions follow the SAME grammatical template (im + inf.abs.+impf. protasis / weqatal apodosis). 2. In four out of five (Jacob, Hannah, Absalom, Israel/Num 21), the default conjunctive-weqatal force is uncontroversial. The apodosis expresses one reward or one action (or a coordinated sequence). 3. Num 21:2 uses חרם (cherem) not נדר (neder)-plus-olah. That vow's apodosis (wehacharamti) is a PUBLIC JUDICIAL BAN, lawful in conquest against a Canaanite oppressor (Arad). It is NOT a private person-vow like Jephthah's. 4. Hannah (1 Sam 1:11) is the lexically closest dedication-model: SAME "laYHWH" dative frame, PLUS explicit "all the days of his life" + separation-marker. Jephthah omits both. 5. The disjunctive-waw reading of Jdg 11:31, if genuinely admissible, would be a UNIQUE case — no other OT vow demonstrably uses disjunctive waw in the apodosis chain.
================================================================ PARALLEL "LO YADA ISH" CONSTRUCTIONS (virginity formula) ================================================================
| Passage | Subject | Construction | Living/dead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 19:8 | Lot's daughters | "which have not known man" | Living |
| Gen 24:16 | Rebekah | bethulah + WX-QATAL ve'ish lo yeda'ah | Living |
| Num 31:17 | Midianite women | sexually-experienced marked for death | (killed) |
| Num 31:18 | Midianite virgin girls | "that have not known..." — SPARED | Living |
| Num 31:35 | 32,000 virgin count | "women that had not known man" | Living |
| Jdg 11:39 | Jephthah's daughter | WX-QATAL ve-hi lo yad'ah ish | DISPUTED |
| Jdg 19:25 | Gibeah concubine | (sexually abused — "knew her") | Dead from |
| abuse | |||
| Jdg 21:11-12 | Jabesh-Gilead virgins | "known no man by lying with male" | Living |
| 1 Kgs 1:4 | Abishag | WX-QATAL ve-ha-melek lo yeda'ah | Living |
PATTERN: Every other OT "lo yada ish / lo yeda'ah" applies to a LIVING woman whose sexual status matters for ongoing social/marital context (priestly marriage, military captivity, royal chastity). NONE describes a deceased woman's past virginity. The narrator's choice of the WX-QATAL + lo-yada-ish formula at Jdg 11:39 places the daughter in the semantic category of LIVING virginal chastity, not of cut-short-life mourning.
================================================================ PARALLEL DEDICATION/CONSECRATION OF PERSONS TO YHWH ================================================================
| Passage | Dedicant | Lexical markers | Living? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exo 13:2 | All firstborn | qaddesh (consecrate) + kol peter rechem | Living |
| Lev 27:1-8 | Any person-vow | PRIEST-redeemed by 'erek valuation | Living |
| Num 3:9, 8:16 | Levites | netunim (doubled) laYHWH | Living |
| Num 6:1-21 | Nazarite (general) | hizzir (separate) + le + YHWH | Living |
| Jdg 13:5-7 | Samson (Nazarite) | Nazir elohim + razor prohibition | Living |
| 1 Sam 1:11, 22, 28 | Samuel | natan laYHWH + kol yemei chayyav | Living |
| 1 Sam 2:11,18 | Samuel's fulfillment | "ministered to YHWH" — "girded with ephod" | Living |
| Luke 2:36-37 | Anna (prophetess widow) | "departed not from the temple" served | Living |
| nystiaìais "with fastings" etc. | |||
| 1 Cor 7:34 | Unmarried woman | "holy both in body and in spirit" | Living |
| Rev 14:4 | 144,000 "virgins" | "not defiled with women" (figurative) | Living |
PATTERN: Every unambiguous case of person-dedication in Scripture results in LIVING SERVICE — the Nazarite, Samuel, Levite, Anna, Paul's virgin all serve YHWH or His sanctuary while alive. There is NO canonical precedent for dedication-by-immolation of a human being to YHWH (except the Akedah, which is EXPLICITLY a test arrested by divine intervention with ram-substitution).
================================================================ CONCEPT-CONTEXT FINDINGS (summary of concept_context.py runs) ================================================================
Jdg 11:31 — Concepts found: EXODUS (yatsa), REPENTANCE (shub), SACRIFICE (olah). Same-chapter matches (8): Jdg 11:3, 8, 9, 13, 34, 35, 36, 39 — all Jephthah vow-narrative internal echoes. Same-book matches (10): Jdg 6:18, 13:16, 13:19, 13:23, 15:19 — Gideon and Manoah parallels. Notably, Jdg 13:16-23 pairs burnt-offering with ANGEL- OF-YHWH intervention, echoing Akedah-style arrested-sacrifice pattern (the angel tells Manoah to offer a burnt offering to YHWH, not himself/his son).
Jdg 11:39 — Concepts found: TELOS (qets), REPENTANCE (shub), FULFILLMENT (asah), LAW (choq). Same-chapter matches include Jdg 11:10 (elders' pledge to Jephthah), 11:13, 11:27 ("the LORD the Judge"), 11:31, 11:35, 11:36. Same-book matches: Jdg 17:3-4 Micah's mother's silver-dedication, Jdg 2:17 (apostasy refrain), Jdg 21:15, 21:23 (repenting of Benjamin-vow). The cluster of "vow/dedication + repent + statute" markers connects Jephthah's episode to the Judges-wide pattern of rash oaths (Jdg 21) and irregular cultic practice (Micah's silver — Jdg 17 private cult).
1 Sam 1:11 (Hannah) — Concepts: PROPHET (ra'ah/naba), LIFE (chay). Same- chapter matches: 1 Sam 1:10, 15, 22, 26 (her weeping, her answer to Eli, her bringing Samuel to the temple, her oath "as thy soul liveth"). The concept-context algorithm tagged Hannah's vow under the LIFE field, not SACRIFICE — because Hannah's vow-verb is natan + "all the days of his LIFE," not olah. This is exactly the lexical register Jephthah's vow lacks.
Lev 27:2 — Concepts found: LIFE (nefesh — "persons"). Semantic tag confirms the law governs the VOWING of LIVING PERSONS, regulated by priest-valuation rather than by immolation. Same-book matches limit to Leviticus food-law verses (Lev 11 series) — not theologically relevant; demonstrates that the concept_context semantic-classifier did not pick up any "sacrifice" tag for Lev 27:2. The vow-of-persons regulation is about PERSONS LIVING, not persons dying.
================================================================ NOTE ON LXX TEXT COMPARISON (see grammar-reference/greek/lxx-disjunctive-waw-vows.md) ================================================================
LXX Jdg 11:31: A-text: καὶ ἔσται τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ ἀνοίσω αὐτὸν ὁλοκαύτωμα ("and it shall be to the LORD and I will offer him up [as] whole-burnt-offering") → contested waw rendered with KAI (conjunctive) B-text: καὶ ἔσται τῷ κυρίῳ· ἀνοίσω αὐτὸν ὁλοκαύτωμα ("and it shall be to the LORD; I will offer him up...") → asyndeton (no conjunction)
Neither recension uses ἤ ("or") or εἰ μή ("unless"). Both Greek particles were available to the translators (used elsewhere for genuine disjunction, e.g., Lev 5:1 ἤ...ἤ for אוֹ... אוֹ). Their ABSENCE at Jdg 11:31 is substantive negative evidence against the disjunctive-waw reading. The earliest pre- Christian Jewish readers did NOT see disjunction here.
LXX Jdg 5:11: διηγέομαι (G1334) "recount" LXX Jdg 11:40: θρηνεῖν (G2354) "lament"
The LXX translators split the dis legomenon תנה into two Greek verbs, one celebratory and one mournful. The LXX Jdg 11:40 choice of θρηνεῖν reflects the sacrificial-death reading of the narrative. But LXX Jdg 5:11 confirms that the Hebrew root itself in Piel carries "recount/celebrate" force.
================================================================ TEXTUAL VARIANT — Heb 11:32 N1904 vs TR ================================================================
N1904: 22 words. Includes λέγω (G3004), ἐπιλείψει (G1952), χρόνος (G5550), με (G1473), διηγούμενον (G1334), προφητῶν (G4396). TR: 20 words. Omits subject-pronoun; minor orthography shifts (Δαβίδ vs Δαυείδ).
No variant affects the inclusion of Ἰεφθάε or the structure of the nine- aorist-verb list in vv. 33-34. Both texts place Jephthah in the faith-roll.
