Topics Research — The Man of Sin (2 Thess 2:3-4, 8-12)

Question

Who is "the man of sin" / "son of perdition" / "that Wicked" / "the lawless one" in 2 Thess 2:3-12?

ANTICHRIST

Nave's ANTICHRIST entry lists the figure under these biblical coordinates:

  • Warnings by Christ himself — MAT 24:5, 23, 24, 26; MRK 13:6, 21, 22; LUK 21:8 ("many shall come in my name… I am Christ")
  • Paul's catalogue (the exact 2 Thess 2 pericope) — 2 TH 2:3-12 (all twelve verses explicitly indexed under ANTICHRIST)
  • Johannine vocabulary — 1 JN 2:18 ("antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists"); 1 JN 2:22 ("he is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son"); 1 JN 4:3 ("this is that spirit of antichrist"); 2 JN 1:7 ("This is a deceiver and an antichrist")
  • Destruction of the figure in Revelation — REV 19:20 (beast + false prophet cast into lake of fire); REV 20:10, 15

Nave's ANTICHRIST therefore integrates three lexical streams the biblical text keeps distinct: Paul's anthrōpos tēs anomias / huios tēs apōleias / ho anomos; John's antichristos; and Revelation's thērion. The topic is a synthetic category; Paul himself does NOT use G500 antichristos.

APOSTASY

The Nave's APOSTASY entry (~60 verses) divides into these sub-registers:

OT apostasy lexicon: - DEU 13:13 (sons of Belial, "let us go and serve other gods"); DEU 32:15 (Jeshurun waxed fat); ISA 1:28 (forsakers of the LORD shall be consumed); ISA 65:11-16; JER 17:5-6 ("cursed be the man that trusteth in man"); EZK 3:20; 18:24, 26; 33:12, 13, 18; 1 CH 28:9; ZEP 1:4-6

Gospels — Olivet-discourse apostasy prediction: - MAT 13:20-21 (stony-ground hearers "offended" in tribulation); MAT 24:9-12 ("many shall be offended… iniquity shall abound, love of many wax cold"); LUK 8:13 ("in time of temptation fall away")

Epistles — late apostasy warning chain (bearing directly on 2 Thess 2:3): - 1 CO 9:27 (Paul fearing self-reproof); 1 TI 1:19-20 (Hymenaeus and Alexander — faith shipwrecked); 1 TI 4:1-3 ("the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats"); 2 TI 3:1-9 (perilous times shall come, men shall be lovers of their own selves, having a form of godliness but denying the power); 2 TI 4:3-4 (not endure sound doctrine, turn from truth, turn to fables); 2 TI 4:10 (Demas forsook Paul); HEB 3:12 ("take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God"); HEB 6:4-8 (those who fall away); HEB 10:25-31, 39 (forsaking the assembling, willful sin); 2 TH 2:3 ("except there come a falling away first"); 2 TH 2:11-12 (God sends strong delusion); 2 PE 2:1-22 (false prophets, false teachers, damnable heresies); 2 PE 3:17 (being led away with the error of the wicked); Jude 1:4-6

BLASPHEMY

Sub-entry "blasphemy in eschatological figures": - DAN 7:25 (speaks great words against the most High) - DAN 11:36-37 (speaks marvellous things against the God of gods) - 2 TH 2:4 (exalts himself above all that is called God) - 2 TI 3:2 (men shall be blasphemers) - HEB 10:29 (trod underfoot the Son of God, done despite to the Spirit) - REV 13:1 (seven heads, the name of blasphemy); REV 13:5-6 (a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies… opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, against his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven) - REV 16:9, 11, 21; REV 17:3 (beast full of names of blasphemy) - MAT 12:31-32 (blasphemy against the Holy Ghost)

TEMPLE

Nave's TEMPLE topic spans the literal and figurative axes both of which are decisive for 2 Thess 2:4:

Pauline "temple of God = believers/church": - 1 CO 3:16-17 ("ye are the temple of God… the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are") - 1 CO 6:19 ("your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost") - 2 CO 6:16 ("ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them") - EPH 2:20-22 ("built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit") - 1 PE 2:5, 9 ("ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house"; "a royal priesthood, an holy nation") - HEB 3:6 ("whose house are we")

Prophetic / eschatological temple: - 2 TH 2:4 (sits in the naos of God) - REV 11:1 (measure the naos) - DAN 8:11-15 (sanctuary cast down, the daily taken away) - DAN 8:13, 14 (the 2300 evenings-mornings; sanctuary cleansed)

Christ's body and literal standing temple: - JHN 2:19 ("destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up") - MAT 24:1-2, 15 (standing temple, abomination in the holy place)

SANCTUARY

  • EXO 25:8 (let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them)
  • EZK 11:16 ("I will be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come")
  • LAM 2:7, 20; EZK 42:20 (holy/profane distinction)
  • HEB 8:2, 5; HEB 9:2 (the true tabernacle pitched by the Lord, not man)

WORSHIP

Exclusive-worship register — bears on 2 Thess 2:4 "above all that is worshipped" (sebasma): - EXO 20:3; DEU 5:7; 6:13 (thou shalt worship the LORD thy God, and him only shalt thou serve) - MAT 4:10; LUK 4:8 (Christ's temptation — same commandment) - ACT 10:26 (Peter rejects worship from Cornelius) - ACT 14:15 (Paul and Barnabas reject worship at Lystra) - COL 2:18 (voluntary humility and worshipping of angels — proscribed) - REV 19:10; 22:8-9 (John rebuked for worshipping an angel)

WICKED (THE WICKED) / WICKED (PEOPLE)

"The Wicked" as eschatological antagonist: - MAT 13:38-41 (tares = children of the wicked one; gathered at the end) - MAL 4:1 (day cometh, shall burn as an oven; all the proud, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble) - ISA 14:12, 19 (fall of Lucifer; cast out of grave) - 2 TH 2:8 (that Wicked shall be revealed, consumed by spirit of his mouth) - ISA 11:4 (with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked) — direct source of 2 Thess 2:8's pneuma-of-the-mouth image - DAN 7:25 (wear out saints); DAN 8:23-25 (king of fierce countenance); PSA 58:4 (like the deaf adder)

MYSTERY

  • 1 CO 2:7 (the wisdom of God in a mystery, hidden)
  • EPH 3:3-6 (mystery made known by revelation — the Gentiles fellow-heirs)
  • EPH 5:32 (great mystery — Christ and the church)
  • COL 1:26-27 (mystery hid from ages — Christ in you, the hope of glory)
  • 1 TI 3:16 (great is the mystery of godliness — God manifest in the flesh)
  • 2 TH 2:7 (the mystery of iniquity doth already work) — direct antithetical pair to 1 TI 3:16
  • REV 10:7 (the mystery of God should be finished)
  • REV 17:5 (upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH)
  • FALSE CHRIST / FALSE PROPHET (MAT 24:24; MRK 13:22; REV 19:20 chain)
  • IDOLATRY (set up of graven image; cf. DAN 3 Nebuchadnezzar's image and the self-exaltation register)
  • POWERS, PRINCIPALITIES (EPH 6:12 — "wickedness in high places" complements the anomia register)
  • DECEIVE / DECEPTION (MAT 24:4-5, 11, 24 — πλάνη cluster; directly paired with 2 TH 2:9-11 ἐνέργεια πλάνης)
  • JUDGMENT OF GOD (2 TH 2:12 "might be damned" = κριθῶσιν aor-pass-subj; cf. 2 TH 1:5 — "manifest token of the righteous judgment of God")
  • DAY OF THE LORD (1 TH 5:1-3; 2 TH 2:1-2 — the event the man-of-sin's revelation PRECEDES)

Topic-Level Cross-Register Observation

The same pericope (2 Thess 2:3-12) is catalogued under FIVE distinct Nave's topics — ANTICHRIST, APOSTASY, BLASPHEMY, TEMPLE, WICKED, and MYSTERY — plus ghost-entries for WORSHIP (via sebasma at v.4) and SANCTUARY (via naos at v.4). This converging-multiplicity is itself an exegetical datum: a single figure is being described whose identification hangs on how these six topical registers are combined.
