Question

In Daniel 8:14, is the Hebrew word translated 'cleansed' (KJV) more appropriately rendered 'vindicated'? Is 'vindicated' the proper response to the question posed in Daniel 8:13? And does the meaning 'vindicated' include cleansing?

H6663 — tsadaq

Source: D:/Bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md

Occurrences: 54

Primitive root 'to be (make) right' in a moral or forensic sense. 41 OT occurrences (54 KJV translation entries). Stem distribution: Qal 22 (be righteous/in the right), Hiphil 12 (justify/acquit/declare righteous), Piel 5 (prove right), Niphal 1 (be vindicated — Dan 8:14, the SOLE Niphal in the OT), Hithpael 1 (clear oneself). KJV renders it 'just/justify/righteous' across all occurrences EXCEPT Dan 8:14 ('cleansed'). Core is forensic/relational, not cultic purity. Strong's own gloss list does include 'cleanse, clear' among its senses, so the lexicon is not ignorant of a cleansing sense — but that is a secondary/derived sense, and 'cleansed' as the rendering is unique to Dan 8:14. Primary LXX renderings: dikaioo (G1344) 21x, dikaios (G1342) 22x, krino 8x, never katharizo. Collocates mishpat/shaphat/tsaddiq/rasha (courtroom). Job dominates usage (~56%).

Semantic categories: forensic/legal verdict (justify, acquit, declare in the right), being righteous before God (Qal stative), vindication/restoration to right (Niphal, Dan 8:14), proving oneself right (Piel/Hithpael), causing righteousness in others (Hiphil ptcp, Isa 53:11, Dan 12:3)

Key verses: Dan 8:14, Deut 25:1, Job 25:4, Isa 50:8, Isa 53:11, Psa 51:4, Psa 143:2, Prov 17:15

Relevance: The central disputed term. Dan 8:14's nitsdaq is the sole Niphal of tsadaq, a hapax stem-form; its forensic core supports 'vindicated' over 'cleansed', while its parallels with purity words (Job 4:17 taher, Job 25:4 zakah, Psa 51:4 zakah) support that the choice does not EXCLUDE cleansing but subsumes it.

H2891 — taher

Source: D:/Bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2891-taher.md

Occurrences: 115

Primitive root 'to be bright' -> 'be pure'; the standard ritual/moral cleansing verb. 94 occurrences (115 KJV instances, 80 verses). Stems: Piel 37 (declare/actively cleanse), Qal 34 (be clean, resulting state), Hithpael 18 (self-purify), Pual 1. Heavily concentrated in Leviticus (46%), the ceremonial-purity system, but also broad: eschatological/spiritual cleansing (Ezek 36:25, Jer 33:8), refining (Mal 3:3). Collocates kohen, kabas, beged, kaphar, mayim (ritual field). LXX: katharizo (G2511) 61x, katharos (G2513) 23x.

Semantic categories: Levitical cleansing of persons, purification after bodily states, ritual purification of objects/sacred spaces (Lev 16:19), self-purification for worship, divine spiritual cleansing (Ezek 36:25, Mal 3:3), moral purity question (Job 4:17)

Key verses: Lev 16:19, Lev 16:30, Ezek 36:25, Mal 3:3, Job 4:17, Psa 51:7

Relevance: The ritual-cleansing verb Daniel did NOT use in Dan 8:14 (the negative control). Lev 16:19,30 use taher for the DOA sanctuary/people cleansing — the exact context 8:14 evokes. Guard against overreach: Mal 3:3 and Ezek 36:25 show taher is broad, not narrow, so the inclusion case for tsadaq rests on tsadaq's breadth, not on shrinking taher.

H3722 — kaphar

Source: D:/Bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3722-kaphar.md

Occurrences: 130

Primitive root 'to cover' (with bitumen) -> figuratively expiate/atone/placate/cancel. 130 occurrences. Dominant Piel: a priest makes atonement for persons/sanctuary/objects with sacrificial blood, issuing in acceptance/forgiveness. Concentrated in Leviticus (52) and Numbers (20). Also: purging/removal of sin (Isa 6:7), appeasement (Gen 32:20), divine forgiveness (Ps 78:38), intercessory/national atonement (Dan 9:24). LXX includes exhilaskomai, katharizo (G2511, 14x). Collocates chattaah, kohen, mizbeach, dam, taher (atonement leading to cleansing).

Semantic categories: ritual atonement through sacrifice, purging/removal of sin, appeasement/pacification, divine forgiveness/mercy, intercessory/national atonement (Dan 9:24), physical covering (Qal, Gen 6:14)

Key verses: Lev 16:16, Lev 16:30, Lev 17:11, Dan 9:24, Isa 6:7

Relevance: The atonement verb Daniel used in Dan 9:24 (one chapter after 8:14) but NOT in 8:14 — the key negative control proving Daniel had the atonement/cleansing vocabulary in his active lexicon and deliberately chose tsadaq instead. kaphar->taher (Lev 16:30) and kaphar->tsedeq (Dan 9:24) establish the atonement-before-righteousness sequence underlying the inclusion model.

H6664 — tsedeq

Occurrences: 119

Masculine noun 'righteousness, justice' from the tsadaq root. 119 occurrences; KJV 'righteousness' (~27+ primary), 'just', 'justice', 'right', 'righteously'. Forensic/covenantal register. Paired with kaphar in Dan 9:24 (tsedeq olamim, 'everlasting righteousness'). Derivation (Strong's): from the root idea of being right morally or forensically.

Semantic categories: righteousness as quality/standard, justice in the courtroom/governance, God's saving righteousness, everlasting righteousness (Dan 9:24)

Key verses: Dan 9:24, Psa 51:4

Relevance: The noun 'righteousness' paired with kaphar (atone) in Dan 9:24 — the bridge verse showing atonement issues in righteousness. Its presence in Daniel's own chapter 9 shows the tsadaq word-family (not the taher family) is Daniel's register for what happens after atonement.

H6666 — tsedaqah

Occurrences: 165

Feminine noun 'righteousness' from the tsadaq root. 165 occurrences; KJV predominantly 'righteousness', also 'justice', 'right', 'righteous acts'. Same forensic/covenantal semantic field as tsedeq; often God's saving/vindicating righteousness in Isaiah and Psalms.

Semantic categories: righteousness as covenant faithfulness, God's saving/vindicating righteousness, righteous acts, justice

Key verses: Isa 45:24, Isa 46:13

Relevance: Cognate noun confirming the breadth of the tsadaq righteousness field. In Isaiah the tsedaqah of God is His vindicating, salvation-bringing rightness — the noun-side of the forensic vindication that nitsdaq expresses verbally in Dan 8:14.

H6662 — tsaddiq

Occurrences: 210

Adjective 'just, righteous' from the tsadaq root. 210 occurrences; KJV overwhelmingly 'righteous'/'the righteous' and 'just'. The courtroom sense: the party in the right, the one a judge should justify (Deut 25:1, 'justify the righteous').

Semantic categories: the righteous person/party, the just (in the right) in a legal contest, God as righteous

Key verses: Deut 25:1, Prov 17:15

Relevance: The adjective completing the tsadaq family. Deut 25:1 and Prov 17:15 pair the verb tsadaq (justify) with tsaddiq (the righteous) in explicit courtroom settings, fixing the forensic core that supports 'vindicated' for Dan 8:14.

H2135 — zakah

Occurrences: 11

Primitive root (cf. zakak) 'to be translucent', figuratively 'to be innocent/pure'. 11 occurrences; KJV 'be clean', 'be clear', 'cleanse', 'count pure', 'be pure'. A purity/innocence verb overlapping the clean side of the semantic field.

Semantic categories: be clean/pure (moral innocence), be clear/innocent, count pure

Key verses: Job 25:4, Psa 51:4, Job 15:14

Relevance: Stands in synonymous poetic parallel with tsadaq in Job 25:4 ('be justified... be clean') and Psa 51:4/MT 51:6 ('be justified... be clean'). The load-bearing datum for the inclusion thesis: the righteousness verb and the purity verb are paired in Hebrew poetry, so tsadaq's field overlaps the clean field — choosing tsadaq does not exclude cleansing.

H1249 — bar

Occurrences: 9

Adjective from barar 'pure, clean, choice, clear'. 9 occurrences; KJV 'clean', 'pure', 'clear', 'choice'. A purity adjective in the clean/clear semantic field (bor/barar family).

Semantic categories: pure/clean (of heart), clear/bright, choice

Key verses: Psa 24:4, Psa 73:1

Relevance: Part of the purity word-group (bor/bar) that Davidson lists as standing in parallel with sdq (e.g., Psa 18:20 bor). A minor member of the clean field bearing on the inclusion overlap; also the field of barar used in Daniel's own Dan 12:10 ('purified').

H4941 — mishpat

Occurrences: 448

Noun from shaphat 'a verdict pronounced judicially; a sentence, formal decree; justice, right, ordinance'. Very frequent. Strong's: 'properly a verdict (favorable or unfavorable) pronounced judicially, especially a sentence or formal decree... including the act, the place, the suit, the crime, and the penalty; abstractly justice'. The primary forensic partner of tsadaq (8x collocation per H6663 study).

Semantic categories: judicial verdict/sentence, justice/right (abstract), legal cause/suit, ordinance/decree

Key verses: Isa 50:8, Job 40:8, Psa 143:2

Relevance: The forensic frame word collocating with tsadaq. Appears in Isa 50:8 ('master of my judgment/adversary at law') and Job 40:8 ('disannul my judgment') alongside tsadaq, confirming that tsadaq operates in a courtroom-verdict register — the frame that makes 'vindicated' the natural rendering.

H1779 — din

Occurrences: 21

Hebrew noun 'judgement (the suit, justice, sentence, or tribunal); by implication strife'. 21 occurrences; KJV 'cause', 'judgment', 'plea', 'strife'. From the root din (to judge/contend).

Semantic categories: judgment/verdict, legal cause/plea, strife/contention

Key verses: Est 1:13, Prov 20:8

Relevance: Hebrew cognate of the Aramaic din (H1780) that appears in Dan 7:10,22,26 for the seated court. Ties the Hebrew and Aramaic judgment vocabulary together, framing the forensic courtroom that Dan 8:14 compresses into one justice-word.

H1780 — din (Aramaic)

Occurrences: 5

Aramaic noun corresponding to Hebrew din (H1779): 'judgement (the suit, justice, sentence or tribunal)'. 5 occurrences; KJV 'judgment' (all). Occurs in Daniel's Aramaic court scenes.

Semantic categories: judgment (the court's session), verdict/sentence, tribunal

Key verses: Dan 7:10, Dan 7:22, Dan 7:26

Relevance: The courtroom word in Dan 7:10 ('the judgment was set'), 7:22 ('judgment given to the saints'), 7:26 ('the judgment shall sit'). Dan 8:14's single verb nitsdaq compresses this expanded court: the din of Dan 7 IS the vindication event of Dan 8:14 — one judgment, two descriptions.

H7760 — sum (suwm)

Occurrences: 641

Primitive root 'to put, set, place, appoint' with a very wide range of applications. Frequent. KJV 'set', 'make', 'appoint', 'lay', 'put', etc.

Semantic categories: set/place/put, appoint/ordain, make/constitute, lay upon

Key verses: Zech 3:5

Relevance: In Zech 3:5 the fair mitre is 'set' (sum) on Joshua's head — the positive conferral of status that, alongside the removal of filthy garments, models the cleansing-within-vindication hierarchy. The act of conferring positive standing (not merely removing defilement) is what vindication adds beyond cleansing.

G1344 — dikaioo

Occurrences: 48

Verb 'to render (show or regard as) just or innocent; justify' (from dikaios G1342). NT 48 KJV translation instances; overwhelmingly 'justify/justified/is justified/the justifier'. Strong's derivation: 'to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent'. The primary LXX rendering of Hebrew tsadaq (H6663) — 21x. The Greek narrows tsadaq's range primarily to forensic declaration.

Semantic categories: justify/declare righteous (forensic), be justified/vindicated, acquit/regard as just

Key verses: Rom 3:24, Rom 3:26, Isa 45:25 (LXX), Psa 143:2 (LXX)

Relevance: The Greek side of the tsadaq->dikaioo translation-history argument. The LXX occurrence audit (below) tests whether dikaioo ever appears in a cleansing context. FINDING: across all 29 local LXX occurrences, dikaioo is uniformly forensic/judicial (justify, declare righteous, vindicate, be in the right) and NEVER renders or denotes ritual cleansing. This confirms the tsadaq->dikaioo bridge is forensic, and that Dan 8:14's LXX rendering (katharizo/G2511, a cleanse-verb) is an outlier that departs from how the LXX normally renders tsadaq — i.e. the 'cleansed' reading of Dan 8:14 traces to a versional cleanse-rendering, not to dikaioo and not to the Hebrew verb's own core sense.

Note ἁγνός ('pure') describes the FEAR of the LORD, not dikaioo's object; dikaioo itself remains a righteousness predicate, not a cleansing act.
Psa 51:4 12 δικαιωθῇς σοὶ μόνῳ ἥμαρτον καὶ τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιόν σου ἐποίησα ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου καὶ νικήσῃς ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε subject that thou (God) mightest be justified in thy words personal not_applicable God 'justified/vindicated when judged' (LXX numbering 50:6). Forensic; occurs in a psalm that ELSEWHERE uses cleansing verbs, but dikaioo itself here is the verdict verb. Quoted Rom 3:4.
Psa 73:13 5 ἐδικαίωσα καὶ εἶπα ἄρα ματαίως ἐδικαίωσα τὴν καρδίαν μου καὶ ἐνιψάμην ἐν ἀθῴοις τὰς χεῖράς μου direct_object τὴν καρδίαν μου my heart conceptual not_applicable 'I have kept my heart righteous/justified it in vain'. Note the NEXT clause uses a distinct washing verb (ἐνιψάμην, 'I washed my hands in innocency') — the Greek keeps dikaioo (make/keep righteous) separate from nipto (wash), showing the translators did NOT treat dikaioo as a cleansing word.
Psa 82:3 8 δικαιώσατε κρίνατε ὀρφανὸν καὶ πτωχόν ταπεινὸν καὶ πένητα δικαιώσατε direct_object ταπεινὸν καὶ πένητα the lowly and needy personal not_applicable 'Do justice to / vindicate the lowly and needy' — judicial defense of the oppressed. No cleansing.

Purely forensic. No cleansing.
Isa 43:26 13 δικαιωθῇς σὺ δὲ μνήσθητι καὶ κριθῶμεν λέγε σὺ τὰς ἀνομίας σου πρῶτος ἵνα δικαιωθῇς subject that thou mayest be justified personal not_applicable 'Let us plead together (kritho)... that you may be justified' — legal self-defense. Forensic. No cleansing.

The verdict grounded in sin-bearing — inclusion structure — but dikaioo itself is the justify-verb, not a cleanse-verb. No cleansing sense in the word.
Jer 3:11 6 ἐδικαίωσεν καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με ἐδικαίωσεν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ Ισραηλ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀσυνθέτου Ιουδα direct_object τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ his own soul (Israel justified herself) personal not_applicable 'Backsliding Israel justified herself more than treacherous Judah' — comparative self-justification. Forensic. No cleansing.

Even in a priestly/sanctuary-adjacent context dikaioo means uphold-as-right, NOT cleanse.
Mic 6:11 2 δικαιωθήσεται εἰ δικαιωθήσεται ἐν ζυγῷ ἄνομος καὶ ἐν μαρσίππῳ στάθμια δόλου subject shall the lawless be justified with dishonest scales personal not_applicable 'Shall the wicked be declared innocent with false balances?' Forensic acquittal question. No cleansing.
Mic 7:9 9 δικαιῶσαι ὀργὴν κυρίου ὑποίσω ὅτι ἥμαρτον αὐτῷ ἕως τοῦ δικαιῶσαι αὐτὸν τὴν δίκην μου καὶ ποιήσει τὸ κρίμα μου καὶ ἐξάξει με εἰς τὸ φῶς ὄψομαι τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ subject τὴν δίκην μου (until he) pleads/vindicates my cause conceptual not_applicable 'Until he pleads my case (dike) and executes my judgment (krima)' — explicit lawsuit vocabulary. The clearest courtroom sense. No cleansing.

G2511 — katharizo

Occurrences: 37

Verb 'to cleanse, make clean, purify' (kathar- family). NT ~37 KJV instances: 'clean', 'cleanse', 'cleansed', 'purge', 'purify', 'make clean'. The primary LXX rendering of Hebrew taher (H2891, 61x) and used 14x for kaphar. The Theodotion/LXX cleanse-verb. CORPUS FINDING: the LOCAL LXX text of Dan 8:14 reads 'καὶ καθαρισθήσεται τὸ ἅγιον' with the verb καθαρισθήσεται tagged G2511 — i.e. the local Greek Daniel renders nitsdaq with katharizo (cleanse), NOT dikaioo.

Semantic categories: cleanse/make clean (ritual), purify/purge, declare clean (priestly), spiritual/moral cleansing

Key verses: Dan 8:14 (LXX), Heb 9:23, Lev 16:19 (LXX), Matt 8:3, 1 John 1:7

Relevance: The disputed Greek verb at Dan 8:14. This audit's textual verification confirms the LOCAL LXX corpus renders Dan 8:14 with katharizo (cleanse), tagged G2511 — establishing that the KJV 'cleansed' descends from the Greek/Latin cleanse-tradition, not from the Hebrew tsadaq. Also the verb in Heb 9:23 (heavenly things 'purified') that raises the standing objection, resolved by the inclusion hierarchy (broader tsadaq encompasses narrower katharizo).

G1342 — dikaios

Occurrences: 81

Adjective 'righteous, just, right' (the kernel of the dik- family from which dikaioo derives). NT 81 occurrences; KJV 'righteous' (22), 'just' (16), 'the righteous', 'right', 'a just', etc. The LXX adjective for tsaddiq/tsadaq-state (22x for tsadaq). Denotes conformity to what is right; in Revelation, God's ways/judgments are dikaios.

Semantic categories: righteous/just (of persons), just/right (of acts, judgments), God/Christ as righteous

Key verses: Rom 3:26, Rev 15:3, Rev 16:5, Rev 16:7, Rev 19:2

Relevance: The adjective declaring God's ways and judgments righteous in Rev 15:3; 16:5,7; 19:2 — the cosmic-vindication vocabulary. Shows the dik- family (not the kathar- family) carries the meaning 'God's character/government is vindicated as right', a meaning 'cleansed' cannot bear, reinforcing that vindication is the larger category.

G1345 — dikaioma

Occurrences: 10

Neuter noun 'an equitable deed; by implication a statute or (judicial) decision' (from dikaioo G1344). 10 NT occurrences; KJV 'ordinances' (3), 'righteousness' (3), 'judgment', 'justification', 'righteousness'. The righteous-act / righteous-decree noun of the dik- family.

Semantic categories: righteous act/deed, ordinance/statute, judicial decision/verdict, justification

Key verses: Rev 15:4, Rev 19:8, Rom 5:16, Rom 5:18

Relevance: In Rev 15:4 God's dikaiomata ('judgments/righteous acts') are 'made manifest' — the cosmic display of God's righteous verdicts. Part of the vindication vocabulary cluster in Revelation showing the verdict declaring God right is the widest referent of what nitsdaq begins.

G2643 — katallage (reconciliation)

Occurrences: 4

Noun 'exchange (figuratively adjustment), i.e. restoration to (the divine) favor; reconciliation, atonement' (from katallasso G2644). 4 NT occurrences; KJV 'reconciliation' (2), 'atonement' (1, Rom 5:11), 'reconciling' (1). The NT reconciliation/atonement noun.

Semantic categories: reconciliation, atonement (restoration to favor), the reconciling (of the world)

Key verses: Rom 5:11, Rom 11:15, 2Cor 5:18, 2Cor 5:19

Relevance: The reconciliation/atonement noun in the NT redemptive vocabulary. In Rom 3:24-26 the hilasterion (propitiation) grounds the justifying verdict; katallage names the restored-favor outcome. Part of the atonement-grounds-the-verdict axis (kaphar->tsadaq bridge) — the atonement Christ made is what the justifying/vindicating verdict declares accomplished.

H4823 — mirmac

Occurrences: 8

mirmac (H4823), from H7429 ramas (to trample/tread). Strong's def: 'abasement (the act or the thing)'; KJV gloss: 'tread (down)-ing, (to be) trodden (down) under foot.' 8 total OT occurrences; dominant KJV rendering 'trodden down' (3x). In Dan 8:13 it is the trampling done to the sanctuary and host ('to be trodden under foot'). The hebrew_parser gives lemma מרמס, gloss 'trampled land.'

Semantic categories: trampling / treading down, abasement / subjugation, injustice imagery

Key verses: Daniel 8:13, Isaiah 5:5, Isaiah 28:18

Relevance: The controlling injustice-image of Dan 8:13. The sanctuary/host being reduced to a mirmac (a trodden thing) is an act of violent subjugation/usurpation, not ritual defilement. This is the specific wrong nitsdaq (v.14) answers — a justice/vindication answer fits a trampling problem; a purity/cleansing answer would answer a defilement problem the text does not pose.

H5414 — natan

Occurrences: 2285

natan (H5414), a primitive root: 'to give, used with greatest latitude of application (put, make, etc.).' 2285 total occurrences, 863 unique KJV renderings; top glosses 'gave' (95), 'give' (85), 'to give' (59), 'and put' (56). In Dan 8:13 it appears as tet (Qal InfCon per parser, lemma נתן, gloss 'give') — 'to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot.' In 8:11-12 the host 'was given' over against the daily.

Semantic categories: giving / handing over, permitting / delivering up, placing / setting

Key verses: Daniel 8:12, Daniel 8:13, Daniel 11:31

Relevance: Names the act of giving-over/handing-over of the sanctuary and host to trampling — a transaction of usurpation permitted (divine passive sense in v.11-12). What is 'given over' (natan) to injustice in vv.12-13 is what is set right / vindicated (nitsdaq) in v.14. Supports the 'what God gave over, God vindicates' structure and the injustice-not-defilement reading of the problem.

H6588 — pesha

Occurrences: 95

pesha (H6588), from H6586 pasha: Strong's def 'a revolt (national, moral or religious)'; KJV gloss 'rebellion, sin, transgression, trespass.' 95 total occurrences, 48 unique renderings; overwhelmingly 'transgression(s)' (dozens of forms), with 'rebellion' and 'trespass' minor. In Dan 8:12 the host is given over 'by reason of transgression (pesha)'; in Dan 8:13 'the transgression of desolation' (ha-pesha shomem) is the thing whose duration is questioned.

Semantic categories: transgression / rebellion, revolt against authority, moral/religious wrong

Key verses: Daniel 8:12, Daniel 8:13, Psalm 51:1

Relevance: The violated-norm word of Dan 8:13. pesha is revolt/rebellion (against God's rule and sanctuary), an injustice/moral-legal category, NOT a ritual-impurity category (which would be tame/taher). The problem named is transgression-caused desolation; its fitting answer is a verdict/vindication (tsadaq), not a purification. Central to focus area 2's injustice-vs-defilement adjudication.

H8074 — shamem

Occurrences: 103

shamem (H8074), a primitive root: Strong's def 'to stun (or intransitively, grow numb), i.e. devastate or (figuratively) stupefy (both usually in a passive sense)'; KJV gloss 'be desolate/astonished/astonied, make/lay waste, destroy.' 103 total occurrences, 62 unique renderings; top 'desolate' (14). In Dan 8:13 it is shomem (Qal Ptcp per parser, lemma שׁמם, gloss 'be desolate') — 'the transgression of desolation.'

Semantic categories: desolation / laying waste, devastation, appalment / astonishment

Key verses: Daniel 8:13, Daniel 9:27, Daniel 12:11

Relevance: Defines the effect of the little horn's assault as desolation/devastation of the sanctuary and its service — a state of ruin produced by usurpation and transgression, not a state of ceremonial uncleanness. Reinforces that Dan 8:13 poses a problem of injustice/devastation, whose answer (v.14 nitsdaq) is restoration-to-rights/vindication rather than ritual cleansing.
