A. Primary Narrative — Judges 11 (FULL CHAPTER)¶
Judges 11:1-11 (Jephthah's Origin and Appointment)¶
Jdg 11:1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he [was] the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah. Jdg 11:2 And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou [art] the son of a strange woman. Jdg 11:3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him. Jdg 11:4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel. Jdg 11:5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: Jdg 11:6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? Jdg 11:8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. Jdg 11:9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? Jdg 11:10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words. Jdg 11:11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
Judges 11:12-28 (Diplomatic Speech to Ammon — Torah-Literacy Test)¶
Jdg 11:12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land? Jdg 11:13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably. Jdg 11:14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon: Jdg 11:15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon: Jdg 11:16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh; Jdg 11:17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken [thereto]. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not [consent]: and Israel abode in Kadesh. Jdg 11:18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon [was] the border of Moab. Jdg 11:19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place. Jdg 11:20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. Jdg 11:21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. Jdg 11:22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan. Jdg 11:23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it? Jdg 11:24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess. Jdg 11:25 And now [art] thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them, Jdg 11:26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that [be] along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover [them] within that time? Jdg 11:27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
Torah-literacy observation: Jephthah's speech (vv. 15-27) closely tracks Num 20:14-21; 21:13-35; and Deut 2:4-9, 19 — the Exodus-era narrative of passage through Edom/Moab, Arnon boundary, conquest of Sihon. Jephthah demonstrates accurate knowledge of Pentateuchal history — which is load-bearing for the analysis: the "he was an ignorant outlaw" defense of the literal reading collapses (Edersheim BHOTV3 141.1). A Torah-literate Jephthah knows Lev 18:21; 20:2-5; Deut 12:31; 18:10 and knows Lev 27:1-8 / Num 30.
Judges 11:29-31 (Spirit + Vow — CENTRAL)¶
Jdg 11:29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over [unto] the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Jdg 11:31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
Hebrew parsing of v. 30 (key elements): - וַיִּדַּר (Qal.Wayq.3ms נדר) "and he vowed" + cognate accusative נֶדֶר — solemn vow-formula - אִם (Conj "if") + נָתוֹן תִּתֵּן (inf.abs.+Impf.2ms נתן) — emphatic protasis "if thou wilt indeed deliver"
Hebrew parsing of v. 31 (CENTRAL): - וְהָיָה (Qal.Perf.3ms weqatal) — apodosis head - הַיּוֹצֵא אֲשֶׁר יֵצֵא (Qal.Ptcp.ms + relative + Impf.3ms יצא) — casus pendens + cognate-verb relative; maximally indefinite referent - לִקְרָאתִי (לקרא Qal.InfCon+1s) "to meet me" — social-encounter idiom skewing human - וְהָיָה לַיהוָה (weqatal + dative) — "and shall be to YHWH" (plain dative; NOT Hannah's natan+kol-yemei-chayyav) - וְהַעֲלִיתִהוּ עֹלָה (Verb.Hiphil.Perf.1s+3ms עלה "cause to go up" + Noun.fs.Abs עולה "burnt-offering") — technical cultic collocation (Hiphil alah + olah) used at Gen 8:20; 22:2, 13; Lev 17:8; 2 Kgs 3:27

The disjunctive-waw question (v. 31): The third weqatal וְהַעֲלִיתִהוּ can grammatically be read disjunctively ("OR I will offer it up") per W-O'C §39.2 polyfunctionality of waw + legal-enumeration parallels (Exo 21:15 — "his father OR his mother"). But default force of a weqatal chain is conjunctive ("and"). Hebrew has a dedicated disjunctive particle אוֹ (used in v. 34 "neither son אוֹ or daughter"); v. 31 does NOT use אוֹ. LXX A-text uses καί (conjunctive); B-text uses asyndeton. Neither LXX recension uses ἤ. Grammar admits the disjunctive reading as MARKED; the unmarked default is conjunctive.
Judges 11:32-33 (Victory)¶
Jdg 11:32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands. Jdg 11:33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, [even] twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
Judges 11:34 (Daughter Emerges — yechidah Akedah Echo)¶
Jdg 11:34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she [was his] only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
Hebrew parsing (central): - יֹצֵאת (Qal.Ptcp.fs.Abs יצא) "going out" — feminine counterpart to v. 31 הַיּוֹצֵא - לִקְרָאתוֹ (לקרא Qal.InfCon+3ms) "to meet him" — social-encounter idiom - בְתֻפִּים וּבִמְחֹלוֹת — "with timbrels and dances" (victory-welcome cultural marker) - וְרַק הִיא יְחִידָה — "and only she [was] an only-one" (Adj.fs.Abs H3173 יָחִיד) — direct lexical echo of Gen 22:2 אֶת־בִּנְךָ אֶת־יְחִידְךָ ("thy son, thine only son") - אֵין לוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ בֵּן אוֹ־בַת — "he had from him neither son OR daughter" — note the explicit use of disjunctive particle אוֹ here (contrast with v. 31 where the waw, not אוֹ, was used; the author plainly had אוֹ in his idiolect but did not reach for it in v. 31)
Judges 11:35 (Jephthah's Lament)¶
Jdg 11:35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
Hebrew parsing: - הַכְרֵעַ הִכְרַעְתִּנִי (Hiphil.Inf.Abs + Hiphil.Perf.2fs+1s כרע) — tautological inf.abs. "thou hast utterly bowed me down" - פָּצִיתִי פִי אֶל־יְהוָה (Qal.Perf.1s פצה + pi + prep.+YHWH) — "I have opened my mouth unto YHWH" - וְלֹא אוּכַל לָשׁוּב (we + Neg + Qal.Impf.1s יכל + Qal.InfCon שוב) — "and I cannot go/turn back"
Observation: Jephthah's own interpretation ("I cannot go back") reflects his subjective sense of vow-irrevocability. But Torah explicitly provides off-ramps he does not invoke: Lev 5:4-5 (rash-oath guilt-offering); Lev 27:1-8 (neder redemption by priestly valuation); Num 30 (father's annulment of daughter's vow — inapplicable since Jephthah is vower, not daughter; but Num 30:2 governs the man's own vow-obligation, which the Lev 5:4-5 pathway can still mitigate). "I cannot go back" = Jephthah's subjective conviction, not Torah's legal assessment.
Judges 11:36 (Daughter's Consent)¶
Jdg 11:36 And she said unto him, My father, [if] thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, [even] of the children of Ammon.
Hebrew parsing: - עֲשֵׂה לִי (Qal.Impv.2ms עשׂה + prep.+1s) "do to me" — SAME verb (עשׂה) as 11:39 climax; neutral "do/make" not sacrificial - כַּאֲשֶׁר יָצָא מִפִּיךָ (per. + Qal.Perf.3ms יצא + prep.+2ms) "according as it went out from thy mouth" — Num 30:2 legal idiom ("all that proceedeth out of his mouth")
Judges 11:37-38 (Daughter's Two-Month Mountain Mourning of bethulim)¶
Jdg 11:37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows. Jdg 11:38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away [for] two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
Hebrew parsing: - יֵעָשֶׂה (Verb.Niphal.Impf.3ms עשׂה) — "let it be done" (polite passive — daughter requesting, not commanding) - הַרְפֵּה מִמֶּנִּי (Hiphil.Impv.2ms רפה + prep+1s) — "let me alone / desist from me" - וְאֵלְכָה (Qal.Impf.1s cohortative) — "let me go" - וְיָרַדְתִּי (weqatal Qal.Perf.1s) — "and I will descend" - וְאֶבְכֶּה (weqatal Qal.Impf.1s) — "and I will weep" - עַל־בְּתוּלַי (prep+Noun.fp.Abs+1s בתולים H1331) — "for my virginity-state" - Repetition in v. 38: וַתֵּבְךְּ עַל־בְּתוּלֶיהָ (Qal.Wayq.3fs + bethulim+3fs) — "and she wept over her virginity" — narrator echoes daughter's own phrasing
Library reference: word-studies/H1331-bthuwliym.md — abstract plural of condition; ALL 10 OT occurrences describe LIVING women's virginity-state, never a deceased woman's past status.
Judges 11:39 (Fulfillment — THE CENTRAL VERSE)¶
Jdg 11:39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her [according] to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
Hebrew parsing:
- וַיַּעַשׂ לָהּ אֶת־נִדְרוֹ (Qal.Wayq.3ms עשׂה + prep+3fs + direct-obj + noun+3ms) — "AND HE DID to her his vow"
- ⚠ CRITICAL: Narrator uses עשׂה (plain "do/make"), NOT:
- זבח (H2076 zabach — slaughter/sacrifice) — ABSENT
- שׁחט (H7819 shachat — technical slaughter) — ABSENT
- שׂרף (H8313 saraph — burn) — ABSENT
- עלה Hiphil + עולה (Gen 8:20; 22:2, 13; 2 Kgs 3:27 Mesha's identical act) — ABSENT
- הֶעֱבִיר בָּאֵשׁ (pass through fire; 2 Kgs 16:3; 21:6; Jer 32:35) — ABSENT
- אֲשֶׁר נָדָר (relative + Qal.Perf.3ms נדר) — cognate-accusative "which he had vowed" (figura etymologica)
- וְהִיא לֹא־יָדְעָה אִישׁ — WX-QATAL construction: waw + fronted PersPron.3fs הִיא + Neg + Qal.Perf.3fs ידע + Noun אִישׁ
- Library reference: grammar-reference/hebrew/syntax-wx-qatal-circumstantial.md
- Construction type = circumstantial / disjunctive / stative-resultant (W-O'C §39.2.3; GKC §156)
- BREAKS the wayyiqtol chain between וַיַּעַשׂ and וַתְּהִי
- Pragmatic force: parenthetical background-state notice about her sexual/marital status
- The narrator's chosen interpretive gloss on "doing the vow" is in SEXUAL/MARITAL terms, not mortality terms
- וַתְּהִי־חֹק בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל — "and it became a statute in Israel"
Judges 11:40 (Annual Four-Day Rite)¶
Jdg 11:40 [That] the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
Hebrew parsing: - מִיָּמִים יָמִימָה (prep+yom+yom-locative) — distributive "from days to days" = "yearly" (Exo 13:10; 1 Sam 1:3; 2:19 — all cultic/pilgrimage) - תֵּלַכְנָה (Qal.Impf.3fp הלך) — "they would go" (iterative habitual) - בְּנוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל — "daughters of Israel" - לְתַנּוֹת (prep+Verb.Piel.InfCon תנה H8567) — dis legomenon; the ONLY other verbal OT occurrence is Jdg 5:11 יְתַנּוּ "they rehearse/recount the righteous acts of the LORD" — CELEBRATIVE. LXX splits: 5:11 → διηγέομαι "recount"; 11:40 → θρηνεῖν "lament." - לְבַת־יִפְתָּח (prep + construct) — ל of interest/benefit (one recounts TO/FOR), not עַל of object-of-mourning (one weeps OVER) - אַרְבַּעַת יָמִים בַּשָּׁנָה — "four days in the year"
Library reference: word-studies/H8567-tanah.md — dis legomenon; ritual recounting, celebrative in Jdg 5:11.
B. Continued Judgeship — Judges 12 (Context)¶
Jdg 12:1 And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire. Jdg 12:2 And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands. Jdg 12:3 And when I saw that ye delivered [me] not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me? Jdg 12:4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim... Jdg 12:5-6 [Shibboleth passage — 42,000 Ephraimites killed] Jdg 12:7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.
Observation: Jephthah continues to judge Israel for six years after his daughter's episode. The narrative does not retire him, disqualify him, or otherwise signal divine rejection of his person. He dies and is buried as a canonical judge. (This is weak evidence either way on the vow-reading — one can be a judge while guilty of grave sin; one can also be a judge after lawful dedication of one's daughter.)
C. Vow-Redemption Law — Leviticus 27 (FULL CHAPTER)¶
Lev 27:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Lev 27:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons [shall be] for the LORD by thy estimation. Lev 27:3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. Lev 27:4 And if it [be] a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. Lev 27:5 And if [it be] from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. Lev 27:6 And if [it be] from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation [shall be] three shekels of silver. Lev 27:7 And if [it be] from sixty years old and above; if [it be] a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels. Lev 27:8 But if he be poorer than thy estimation, then he shall present himself before the priest, and the priest shall value him; according to his ability that vowed shall the priest value him. [vv. 9-25: animals, houses, fields — redemption tariff; + sanctuary-shekel = 20 gerahs] Lev 27:26 Only the firstling of the beasts, which should be the LORD'S firstling, no man shall sanctify it; whether [it be] ox, or sheep: it [is] the LORD'S. Lev 27:27 And if [it be] of an unclean beast, then he shall redeem [it] according to thine estimation, and shall add a fifth [part] of it thereto: or if it be not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to thy estimation. Lev 27:28 Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath, [both] of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing [is] most holy unto the LORD. Lev 27:29 None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; [but] shall surely be put to death. Lev 27:30-34 [Tithe laws; closing formula]
Hebrew parsing of Lev 27:2 (CENTRAL):
- כִּי יַפְלִא נֶדֶר (conj + Hiphil.Impf.3ms פלא H6381 + Noun נֶדֶר H5088) — "when [a man] makes a special/singular vow"
- בְּעֶרְכְּךָ נְפָשֹׁת לַיהוָה — "by thy valuation [the] persons [are] to/for YHWH"
- H6187 עֶרֶךְ is the priestly monetary valuation (library: H6187-erek.md) — redemption by silver, age- and sex-scaled tariff
Hebrew parsing of Lev 27:28-29 (CHEREM — distinct category): - חֵרֶם אֲשֶׁר יַחֲרִם אִישׁ (Noun.ms.Abs חרם + relative + Hiphil.Impf.3ms חרם) — "ban/devoted-thing which a man shall devote" - לֹא יִמָּכֵר וְלֹא יִגָּאֵל (Neg + Niphal.Impf.3ms מכר + Neg + Niphal.Impf.3ms גאל) — "shall not be sold AND shall not be redeemed" — non-redemption is explicit - v. 29: כָּל־חֵרֶם אֲשֶׁר יָחֳרַם מִן־הָאָדָם לֹא יִפָּדֶה מוֹת יוּמָת — "every cherem which shall be devoted of men, shall not be redeemed; he shall surely be put to death."
CRITICAL LEGAL POINT: Lev 27:28-29 governs CHEREM (H2764 judicial ban — the Achan/Amalek category; also applied to Molech-worshipers who fall under Lev 20:2-5). This is DISTINCT from ordinary NEDER (H5088 voluntary vow of Lev 27:1-8). Jephthah vowed a נֶדֶר (Jdg 11:30 "wayyiddar Yiphtach NEDER laYHWH"), not a cherem. Therefore: - Lev 27:1-8 (neder → always priest-redeemable via 'erek) applies to Jephthah's vow - Lev 27:28-29 (cherem → non-redeemable, death-penalty) does NOT apply - Jephthah had a Torah-sanctioned off-ramp (priestly valuation — 30 shekels for an adult female 20-60, or 10 shekels for a female 5-20) that he did not invoke
Library: word-studies/H6187-erek.md, H2763-charam.md, H2764-cherem.md.
D. Vow Laws + Annulment — Numbers 30 (FULL CHAPTER)¶
Num 30:1 And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This [is] the thing which the LORD hath commanded. Num 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. Num 30:3 If a woman also vow a vow unto the LORD, and bind [herself] by a bond, [being] in her father's house in her youth; Num 30:4 And her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. Num 30:5 But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her. [vv. 6-15: husband's annulment rights; widows, divorcees] Num 30:16 These [are] the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, [being yet] in her youth in her father's house.
Observation: Num 30 governs A WOMAN'S OWN vow. Jephthah's case is different — HE made the vow, not his daughter. But Num 30:2 ("he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth") is the text Jephthah himself implicitly invokes at 11:35 with פָּצִיתִי פִי אֶל־יְהוָה ("I have opened my mouth"). Note however that Num 30:2 does NOT foreclose Lev 5:4-5 rash-oath atonement pathway, which STILL provides an off-ramp for a man's unwise oath.
E. Hannah's Vow — The Controlling Dedication Parallel (1 Samuel 1 FULL CHAPTER)¶
1 Sam 1:1-10 [Elkanah, Hannah, Peninnah setup; Hannah's barrenness and temple-weeping] 1 Sam 1:11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no rasor come upon his head. [vv. 12-20: Eli encounter, conception, Samuel's birth] 1 Sam 1:21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. 1 Sam 1:22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, [I will not go up] until the child be weaned, and [then] I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever. 1 Sam 1:23-27 [Weaning; Hannah brings Samuel + bullocks + flour + wine to Shiloh] 1 Sam 1:28 Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
Hebrew parsing of 1 Sam 1:11 (CENTRAL parallel to Jdg 11:31): - וַתִּדֹּר נֶדֶר (Qal.Wayq.3fs נדר + cognate accusative) — same vow-formula as Jdg 11:30 - אִם־רָאֹה תִרְאֶה (Conj + Qal.Inf.Abs.+Qal.Impf.2ms ראה) — emphatic protasis ("if thou wilt indeed look") - וּנְתַתִּיו לַיהוָה כָּל־יְמֵי חַיָּיו — "and I will give him to YHWH ALL THE DAYS OF HIS LIFE" - Verb = נָתַן (Qal.Perf.1s+3ms weqatal, cognate to Levite-dedication formula Num 3:9 "netunim netunim laYHWH" + 8:16, 8:19) - Phrase כָּל־יְמֵי חַיָּיו = explicit LIFELONG-duration marker - וּמוֹרָה לֹא־יַעֲלֶה עַל־רֹאשׁוֹ — Nazarite-separation marker ("no razor upon his head"; Num 6:5)
The lexical-register comparison (CRITICAL):
| Element | Hannah (1 Sam 1:11) | Jephthah (Jdg 11:31) |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | natan (give/assign) | hayah la- (plain dative) |
| Plus cultic verb | — | Hiphil alah + olah (sacrificial) |
| Duration clause | kol yemei chayyav (all his life) | (none) |
| Separation marker | "no razor" (Nazarite) | (none) |
| Lexical register | LIFELONG DEDICATION / service | SACRIFICIAL cultic collocation |
Jephthah's vow does NOT use Hannah's dedication-register lexicon. If he had intended lifelong-dedication, the available Torah-authenticated language was natan + kol yemei chayyav. He did not use it. He used the Hiphil alah + olah phrase, which in every other canonical occurrence (Gen 8:20 Noah; Gen 22:2, 13 Akedah; Lev 17:8; 2 Kgs 3:27 Mesha) denotes ACTUAL burnt-offering presentation.
Library: word-studies/H5414-nathan.md; lexical-contrast analysis embedded in natan study's "Easily confused words — offer" row explicitly calls Jdg 11:31's non-use of natan "the pivotal lexical datum whenever Jephthah's vow is analyzed."
Hebrew parsing of 1 Sam 1:28: - הִשְׁאִלְתִּהוּ (Hiphil.Perf.1s+3ms שׁאל) — "I have LENT him" (play on שָׁאוּל "lent/asked — Samuel") - כָּל־הַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר הָיָה הוּא שָׁאוּל לַיהוָה — "all the days he is lent to YHWH" - Samuel is LIVING and being handed over for SANCTUARY SERVICE (cf. 1 Sam 2:11, 18 — "the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest"; "Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod").
Samuel's fulfillment — 1 Sam 2:11, 18:
1 Sam 2:11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest. 1 Sam 2:18 But Samuel ministered before the LORD, [being] a child, girded with a linen ephod. 1 Sam 2:22 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled [at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Note 1 Sam 2:22 — "women assembled at the door of the tabernacle" (same phrase as Exo 38:8 below) confirms the PRECEDENT of female consecrated service at the tabernacle. This supplies a biblical category within which a lifelong-dedicated Jephthah's daughter could serve.
Exo 38:8 (Women at Tabernacle Door — tabernacle-service precedent):
Exo 38:8 And he made the laver [of] brass, and the foot of it [of] brass, of the lookingglasses of [the women] assembling, which assembled [at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
F. Akedah — The Arrested-Sacrifice Type (Genesis 22 FULL CHAPTER)¶
Gen 22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, [here] I [am]. Gen 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. Gen 22:3-8 [Abraham prepares, three-day journey, Isaac carries wood, question re: lamb] Gen 22:9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. Gen 22:10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. Gen 22:11-12 And the angel of the LORD called... Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son] from me. Gen 22:13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind [him] a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. Gen 22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh... Gen 22:15-18 [Divine oath of promise]
Hebrew parsing of Gen 22:2 (the yechidkha + Hiphil alah + olah collocation Jdg 11 echoes): - אֶת־בִּנְךָ אֶת־יְחִידְךָ — "thy son, thine only-son" (Adj.ms.Abs.+2ms יָחִיד H3173) - וְהַעֲלֵהוּ שָׁם לְעֹלָה — "and offer him up there for a burnt offering" (Hiphil.Impv.2ms+3ms עלה + prep + noun עולה)
The type-pattern: The Akedah is archetypal ARRESTED sacrifice. The divine command (v. 2) uses the exact Hiphil alah + olah collocation Jephthah employs in Jdg 11:31. But the ram substitutes; Isaac lives. If the Jdg 11 narrative is typologically patterned on Gen 22, the expectation is arrest — and the narrator supplies the arrest not with a ram-in-thicket but with the lexical-restraint at Jdg 11:39 ("wayya'as" — bare neutral verb) plus the WX-QATAL "she knew no man" (living-virginity state) plus the tanah-recount annual rite.
Library: word-studies/H3173-yachiyd.md — Jdg 11:34 is the ONLY OT verse where LXX uses BOTH ἀγαπητή AND μονογενής to render yachid; the lexical intertext with Gen 22 is extremely tight.
Heb 11:17-19 — NT reception of Akedah:
Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten [son] [μονογενῆ — same Greek the LXX uses for yachid in Jdg 11:34!] Heb 11:18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Heb 11:19 Accounting that God [was] able to raise [him] up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
G. NT Faith-Roll — Hebrews 11 (FULL CHAPTER, critical excerpt)¶
Heb 11:1-31 [Faith cloud — Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham (incl. Isaac-offering v.17), Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Red Sea, Jericho, Rahab] Heb 11:32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and [of] Barak, and [of] Samson, and [of] Jephthae; [of] David also, and Samuel, and [of] the prophets: Heb 11:33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Heb 11:34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Heb 11:35-38 [Women received dead raised; others tortured, mocked, stoned, sawn asunder, slain with sword, wandered] Heb 11:39-40 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
Greek parsing of Heb 11:32-34 aorists (CENTRAL):
Nine aorist verbs in vv. 33-34 (all 3rd person plural), listing the faith-acts commended:
| Aorist | Gloss | Maps to |
|---|---|---|
| κατηγωνίσαντο | subdued/conquered kingdoms | Gideon's Midian (Jdg 7); David's victories; Jephthah's Ammon (Jdg 11:32-33) |
| ἠργάσαντο | wrought righteousness | David's rule; administrative righteousness |
| ἐπέτυχον | obtained promises | Gideon, Barak (Deborah's promise fulfilled) |
| ἔφραξαν | stopped mouths of lions | Daniel, Samson (Jdg 14), David (1 Sam 17) |
| ἔσβεσαν | quenched violence of fire | Dan 3 furnace |
| ἔφυγον | escaped sword's edge | Elijah, David |
| ἐδυναμώθησαν | strengthened from weakness | Samson's final prayer (Jdg 16:28); Hezekiah |
| ἐγενήθησαν ἰσχυροί | became mighty in war | Gideon, Jephthah, Samson, David |
| ἔκλιναν | turned to flight alien armies | Gideon, Jephthah, Barak |
CRITICAL OBSERVATION: Every one of the nine aorists belongs to the military-deliverance semantic field. Not one describes a priestly/cultic act, a vow, or a sacrifice. The acts commended for Jephthah map directly onto Jdg 11:29, 32-33 — Spirit-empowered Ammonite campaign, 20 cities smitten. The faith-commendation is for the military faith-victory, NOT for the vow-execution.
This is consistent with Hebrews' pattern throughout ch. 11 of commending DISCRETE FAITH-ACTS, not whole biographies: - Samson included, but Heb 11 does not endorse his Philistine wife (Jdg 14:1-3) or his visit to the harlot at Gaza (Jdg 16:1) - David included, but Heb 11 does not endorse his adultery with Bathsheba / murder of Uriah - Gideon included, but Heb 11 does not endorse his gold-ephod idolatry (Jdg 8:27)
Therefore Heb 11:32 is SYMMETRICAL on the Jephthah-vow question — it neither commends the vow's execution nor its repudiation. The vow's ethics must be evaluated on OT grounds.
Textual note (N1904 vs TR): Both texts include Jephthah in v. 32; minor orthography variants only.
Library: word-studies/H3173-yachiyd.md (Heb 11:17's μονογενής tracks the yechidah lexicon); grammar-reference does not have a dedicated Heb 11 entry.
H. Torah Prohibition of Human Sacrifice¶
Leviticus 18:21; 20:2-5 (Molech)¶
Lev 18:21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through [the fire] to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I [am] the LORD. Lev 20:2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever [he be] of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth [any] of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones. Lev 20:3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name. Lev 20:4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: Lev 20:5 Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.
Deuteronomy 12:29-31 (Categorical Prohibition — applies to YHWH-worship)¶
Deut 12:29 When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; Deut 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Deut 12:31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
Hebrew parsing: לֹא־תַעֲשֶׂה כֵן לַיהוָה (Neg + Qal.Impf.2ms עשׂה + adv + dative-YHWH) — "Thou shalt not do thus unto YHWH." The prohibition explicitly FORBIDS applying Canaanite child-immolation to YHWH-worship.
Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (Pass-Through-Fire with Divination Cluster)¶
Deut 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. Deut 18:10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Deut 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. Deut 18:12 For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD.
Hebrew parsing: מַעֲבִיר בְּנוֹ־וּבִתּוֹ בָּאֵשׁ (Hiphil.Ptcp.ms עבר + son+3ms + and + daughter+3ms + in-the-fire) — no exception for private vow-motivated sacrifice.
I. Later Prophetic and Historical Condemnations of Human Sacrifice¶
2 Kings 3:27 (Mesha CONTRAST — explicit sacrifice verb)¶
2 Kgs 3:27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him [for] a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to [their own] land.
Hebrew parsing: וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ עֹלָה (Verb.Hiphil.Wayq.3ms+3ms עלה + Noun.fs.Abs עולה) — "and he offered him up [as] burnt-offering." THIS is the technical Hebrew vocabulary for reporting a literal human burnt-offering — and this is what Jdg 11:39 does NOT say.
2 Kings 16:3; 17:17; 21:6; 23:10 (Ahaz, generic Israel, Manasseh, Josiah's reform)¶
2 Kgs 16:3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen... 2 Kgs 17:17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments... 2 Kgs 21:6 And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times... 2 Kgs 23:10 And he defiled Topheth, which [is] in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.
Jeremiah 7:30-32 (Divine Disavowal — CENTRAL)¶
Jer 7:30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it. Jer 7:31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which [is] in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded [them] not, neither came it into my heart. Jer 7:32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD...
Hebrew parsing of Jer 7:31: לִשְׂרֹף (Qal.InfCon שׂרף "to burn") + sons/daughters + in-fire + relative אֲשֶׁר לֹא צִוִּיתִי (Piel.Perf.1s צוה "I did not command") + וְלֹא עָלְתָה עַל־לִבִּי (Qal.Perf.3fs עלה on-heart) "neither came it up into my heart." The divine "not-commanded, not-conceived" disavowal is CATEGORICAL — applies to any and every instance of child-immolation. This forecloses any theological reading in which YHWH COMMANDED or ACCEPTED Jephthah's daughter as a literal burnt-offering.
Jeremiah 19:5; 32:35 (Parallel divine disavowal)¶
Jer 19:5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire [for] burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake [it], neither came [it] into my mind: Jer 32:35 And they built the high places of Baal, which [are] in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through [the fire] unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
Ezekiel 16:20-21; 20:26, 31; 23:37-39¶
Ezek 16:20 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured... Ezek 16:21 That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through [the fire] for them? Ezek 20:26 And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through [the fire] all that openeth the womb... Ezek 20:31 For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols... Ezek 23:37 That they have committed adultery, and blood [is] in their hands... have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through [the fire], to devour [them]. Ezek 23:38 Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day... Ezek 23:39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it...
Other condemnations¶
Ps 106:37-38 [sacrificed sons/daughters to demons; shed innocent blood] Isa 57:5 Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks? Mic 6:7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, [or] with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn [for] my transgression, the fruit of my body [for] the sin of my soul? [rhetorical — the answer is NO]
J. Rash-Oath and Community-Override Parallels¶
1 Samuel 14:24-45 (Saul's Rash Oath Overridden)¶
1 Sam 14:24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed [be] the man that eateth [any] food until evening... 1 Sam 14:27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod... and dipped it in an honeycomb... [vv. 29-43: Jonathan violates oath unknowingly; lots fall on Jonathan; Saul condemns him] 1 Sam 14:44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan. 1 Sam 14:45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: [as] the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
Observation: Saul's rash oath identical in structure to Jephthah's — conditional, binding, death-impending. But 1 Sam 14:45 records COMMUNITY OVERRIDE: the people of Israel CORPORATELY refuse to allow the oath's execution because Jonathan had wrought "this great salvation." Jephthah's narrative records NO such override by the elders or the nation. This is ambiguous evidence: either (a) communal moral collapse in Judges (consistent with Jdg 17-21 pattern of "every man did that which was right in his own eyes"), OR (b) there was no crisis to override because the vow was resolved by dedication rather than immolation (the annual four-day custom of 11:40 would then commemorate a publicly-known honored dedication, not a covered-up private tragedy).
Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 (Wisdom-Literature Vow-Ethic + "Error" Off-Ramp)¶
Ecc 5:1 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools... Ecc 5:2 Be not rash with thy mouth... Ecc 5:4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for [he hath] no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Ecc 5:5 Better [is it] that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Ecc 5:6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it [was] an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
Observation: Ecc 5:6's "it was an error" is OT's recognition that vows can be rashly uttered and that the speaker should NOT compound the error by executing it sinfully. Combined with Lev 5:4-5 rash-oath guilt-offering provision, OT provides multiple off-ramps for unwise oaths.
Leviticus 5:4-13 (Rash-Oath Atonement Pathway)¶
Lev 5:4 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with [his] lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever [it be] that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth [of it], then he shall be guilty in one of these. Lev 5:5 And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these [things], that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that [thing]: Lev 5:6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock...
Numbers 21:1-3 (Israel's Hormah Vow — charam used)¶
Num 21:1 And [when] king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took [some] of them prisoners. Num 21:2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. Num 21:3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.
Hebrew parsing: Same im + inf.abs.+impf. protasis / weqatal apodosis template as Jdg 11:30-31. BUT apodosis uses חרם Hiphil (cherem — judicial ban on an enemy's cities), not עלה Hiphil + עולה. Num 21 is lawful public ban on a Canaanite oppressor; it is NOT a precedent for private person-immolation.
Genesis 28:20-22 (Jacob's Vow — Structural Parallel)¶
Gen 28:20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, Gen 28:21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: Gen 28:22 And this stone, which I have set [for] a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
2 Samuel 15:7-8 (Absalom's Vow)¶
2 Sam 15:7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron. 2 Sam 15:8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.
K. Women's Virginity Formula — All OT Occurrences of "lo yada ish" / "bethulah"¶
Genesis 19:8 (Lot's daughters)¶
Gen 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man...
Genesis 24:16 (Rebekah — CENTRAL PARALLEL)¶
Gen 24:16 And the damsel [was] very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Hebrew parsing: בְּתוּלָה וְאִישׁ לֹא יְדָעָהּ — "a virgin, and-a-man had-not-known-her" (WX-QATAL construction — exactly parallel to Jdg 11:39 וְהִיא לֹא־יָדְעָה אִישׁ). Rebekah is ALIVE and about to be married to Isaac.
Numbers 31:17-18, 35 (Midianite Women)¶
Num 31:17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. Num 31:18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. Num 31:35 And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
Virgins SPARED and LIVING; explicitly so marked.
Judges 21:11-12 (Jabesh-Gilead Virgins)¶
Jdg 21:11 And this [is] the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. Jdg 21:12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh...
Virgins taken alive — LIVING — for Benjamin-restoration.
1 Kings 1:4 (Abishag — WX-QATAL lo yeda'ah)¶
1 Kgs 1:4 And the damsel [was] very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
Hebrew parsing: וְהַמֶּלֶךְ לֹא יְדָעָהּ — identical WX-QATAL structure to Jdg 11:39 but with masculine subject ("the king had not known her"). Abishag is LIVING throughout the remainder of David's reign into the Solomon succession.
Leviticus 21:13-14 (priest marries virgin)¶
Lev 21:13 And he shall take a wife in her virginity. Lev 21:14 A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, [or] an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.
Deuteronomy 22:14-21 (Bride-Defamation Trial — bethulim + virginity-tokens)¶
Deut 22:14-21 [If husband defames bride, father/mother bring "tokens of virginity" (bethulim) before elders. If true, she is stoned; if false, husband fined.]
Every bethulim reference = LIVING bride's sexual status.
L. Spirit of YHWH + Moral-Mixed Judges (Parallel Controls)¶
Judges 3:10 (Othniel)¶
Jdg 3:10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel...
Judges 6:34 / 8:27 (Gideon — Spirit + later ephod idolatry)¶
Jdg 6:34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet... Jdg 8:27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, [even] in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it...
Judges 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14, 19 (Samson — Spirit + Philistine women + harlot)¶
Jdg 13:25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan... Jdg 14:6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent [the lion]... Jdg 14:1-3 [Samson insists on marrying Philistine woman — against parental/Torah counsel] Jdg 14:19 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him... and he slew thirty men of them... Jdg 15:14 ...the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him... Jdg 16:1 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.
1 Samuel 10:10 / 19:23-24 (Saul — Spirit + later disintegration)¶
1 Sam 10:10 ...the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 1 Sam 19:23-24 And he... went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night...
Observation: The Judges/early-monarchy author does NOT treat Spirit-empowerment as a MORAL RATIFIER of subsequent acts. Spirit-inhabitation enables DELIVERANCE (military, prophetic) but coexists with subsequent sinful conduct. Therefore Clarke's "Spirit-of-YHWH could not permit Jephthah to imbrue his hands" argument is theologically appealing but not watertight on the book's own internal controls. The Spirit of Jdg 11:29 empowers the AMMONITE VICTORY (11:32-33); it does not ratify the vow that was uttered DURING the military campaign and EXECUTED later.
M. Scripture on Corban / NT Oath Ethics¶
Mark 7:11-13 (Corban vow-abuse)¶
Mrk 7:11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, [It is] Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; [he shall be free]. Mrk 7:12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Mrk 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered...
Matthew 5:33-37 (Jesus on oaths)¶
Mat 5:33-37 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all...
James 5:12 (James on oaths)¶
Jas 5:12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and [your] nay, nay...
Acts 23:12-15 (Rash oath to kill Paul — NT exemplar of rash-oath ethic)¶
Acts 23:12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
N. NT Living-Virgin-Dedication Precedent (Anna + Pauline Virgins)¶
Luke 2:36-38 (Anna — dedicated temple-service widow)¶
Luke 2:36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; Luke 2:37 And she [was] a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served [God] with fastings and prayers night and day.
NT precedent of living-dedicated woman serving at the temple for life — a category compatible with a dedication-reading of Jephthah's daughter.
1 Corinthians 7:25, 34, 37 (Paul on unmarried/virgin state)¶
1 Cor 7:25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord... 1 Cor 7:34 There is difference [also] between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit... 1 Cor 7:37 Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart... that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.
Revelation 14:4 (Figurative virgin-dedication)¶
Rev 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth...
O. External Corpus References (for verification)¶
Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews¶
- Ant. 5.7.6: "However, this action... was not ungrateful to her... she only desired her father to give her leave, for two months, to bewail her youth with her fellow citizens; and then she agreed, that at the forementioned time he might do with her according to his vow. Accordingly, when that time was over, he sacrificed his daughter as a burnt-offering, offering such an oblation as was neither conformable to the law nor acceptable to God, not weighing with himself what opinion the hearers would have of such a practice." [First-century Jewish reception = literal sacrifice interpretation BUT explicitly declared Torah-violating]
- Ant. 5.7.10: "he had vowed to perform sacred offices; and if he came home in safety, to offer in sacrifice what living creature soever should first meet him." [Josephus paraphrases the vow-referent as GENERIC "what living creature soever" — implicitly acknowledging that the Hebrew participle הַיּוֹצֵא was indeterminate in his reading]
Targum Jonathan on Judges 11:39 (via Clarke Commentary 28231)¶
"It was made a statute in Israel that no man should offer his son or daughter for burnt-offering, as did Jephthah the Gileadite, who did not consult Phinehas the priest; for if he had consulted Phinehas the priest, he would have redeemed her with money." [Targumist reads the narrative as literal sacrifice BUT indicts Jephthah for not invoking Lev 27:1-8 redemption via priestly consultation — the 'erek-valuation off-ramp.]
Judges 20:27-28 (Phinehas era-placement)¶
Jdg 20:27 And the children of Israel inquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God [was] there in those days, Jdg 20:28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother...
Observation: Phinehas is alive and priest-active in Jephthah's generation (Jdg 20-21 = the Benjamin civil war, chronologically adjacent to the Jephthah narrative Jdg 10-12). The Targum's "Jephthah should have consulted Phinehas" argument is historically plausible: the High Priest was geographically and temporally accessible.
LXX renderings (summary from grammar-reference/greek/lxx-disjunctive-waw-vows.md)¶
- Neither recension uses ἤ ("or") or εἰ μή ("unless"). Ancient Greek translators did NOT read disjunction at this waw.
- LXX Jdg 5:11: יְתַנּוּ → διηγέομαι "recount"
- LXX Jdg 11:40: לְתַנּוֹת → θρηνεῖν "lament"
