Question¶
What does 'the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation' (Rev 14:10) mean? How do thumos (G2372) and orge (G3709) function together? What does akratos (G194, unmixed) mean? What does 'tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb' (Rev 14:10) mean? What does 'the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever' (Rev 14:11) mean — eternal conscious torment or permanent destruction? Address using OT prophetic convention: Isaiah 34:10 (Edom), Jude 7 (Sodom). How does Malachi 4:1-3 define the final outcome? What does 'no rest day nor night' describe?
The Third Angel's Warning — Primary Text¶
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive [his] mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Context: Revelation 14 presents three angels delivering sequential messages. The first angel proclaims the everlasting gospel and calls for worship of the Creator (14:6-7). The second angel announces Babylon's fall (14:8). The third angel delivers the most severe warning in Scripture — those who worship the beast receive God's unmixed wrath. The polarity flip from 14:8 to 14:10 is structural: Babylon's wine (seductive deception) becomes God's wine (undiluted judgment). The chapter then contrasts the wicked's fate with the blessed dead who 'rest from their labours' (14:13).
Notes: CRITICAL TENSE DATA: Rev 14:10 basanisthesetai is Future Passive Indicative 3rd Sg. Rev 14:11 anabainei is Present Active Indicative 3rd Sg, and echousin is Present Active Indicative 3rd Pl. The shift from future (torment) to present (smoke ascending, no rest) is confirmed by parser output. The genitive chain in 14:10: tou oinou tou thymou tou Theou tou kekerasmenou akratou en to poterio tes orges autou. Wine (oinos) associates with thumos (genitive of content); cup (poterion) associates with orge (genitive of characterization). Bengel's distinction confirmed: wine = thumos (fierce passion), cup = orge (settled judicial anger). The participle proskunountes (present active, v.11) describes habitual action — those who worship (as ongoing practice).
Blessed Dead REST from Labours — Rest Vocabulary Contrast¶
And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed [are] the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Context: Immediately following the third angel's warning. The contrast is deliberate: those who worship the beast have 'no rest' (14:11), while those who die in the Lord 'rest from their labours' (14:13). The same anapausis vocabulary family appears in both verses.
Notes: The verb in 14:13 is anapausontai (future middle indicative of anapauo, G373) — the cognate verb of anapausis (G372) used in 14:11. The righteous REST; the beast-worshippers have NO rest. This inversion is a structural argument.
Thumos and Orge Paired Again — Cup of the Wine of Fierceness of Wrath¶
And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
Context: The seventh bowl judgment. Babylon receives the cup. The genitive chain here: to poterion tou oinou tou thymou tes orges autou — four genitives (cup of wine of thumos of orge of his). This is the same thumos-orge pairing as 14:10 but with escalated genitive stacking.
Notes: Parser confirms: poterion (G4221, cup), oinou (G3631, wine), thymou (G2372, fierceness), orges (G3709, wrath). Four-genitive chain. In 14:10 the structure is wine-thumos-God plus cup-orge-his. Here all four are stacked in a single chain. The escalation continues to 19:15.
Five-Stacked Genitive Chain — Thumos Climax at the Winepress¶
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Context: Christ's return. The longest genitive chain in Revelation: ten lenon tou oinou tou thymou tes orges tou Theou tou Pantokratoros. Five stacked genitives: winepress of wine of thumos of orge of God of Almighty. This is the climactic expression of the wrath trajectory that began in 14:8.
Notes: Parser confirms: lenon (G3025, winepress), oinou (G3631, wine), thymou (G2372, fierceness), orges (G3709, wrath), Theou (G2316, God), Pantokratoros (G3841, Almighty). Five genitives. The escalation from 14:10 (3 genitives) to 16:19 (4 genitives) to 19:15 (5 genitives) is structural. Thumos appears in all three; orge appears in all three. They are not interchangeable but complementary — thumos = the burning intensity, orge = the judicial implementation.
Living Creatures 'Rest Not Day and Night' — Identical Construction to Rev 14:11¶
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Context: Heavenly throne room vision. The four living creatures praise God ceaselessly. The phrase 'rest not day and night' uses identical vocabulary and grammar as Rev 14:11's 'no rest day nor night.'
Notes: Parser confirms exact parallel: Rev 4:8 has anapausin ouk echousin hemeras kai nuktos — same word anapausis (G372, accusative singular feminine), same verb echo (G2192, present active indicative 3rd plural), same temporal genitives hemeras kai nuktos. Rev 14:11 has ouk echousin anapausin hemeras kai nuktos. IDENTICAL construction. Same word, same tense, same grammar, same book, same author. If the construction in 4:8 describes uninterrupted activity quality rather than ontological eternal duration (the living creatures are not praised into eternal existence — they praise as an ongoing quality of activity), then the same construction in 14:11 need not require eternal conscious existence either.
The Cup of Wine Full of Mixture — OT Source that Rev 14:10 Reverses¶
For in the hand of the LORD [there is] a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring [them] out, [and] drink [them].
Context: A psalm of Asaph. God is the judge (v.7) who puts down one and raises another. The cup in God's hand contains mixed wine — the Hebrew mesek (H4469) meaning mixture. The wicked must drink even the dregs. This is the foundational OT cup-of-wrath passage that Rev 14:10 deliberately reverses.
Notes: Hebrew parser confirms: kowc (H3563, cup), yayin (H3196, wine), male (full), mesek (H4469, mixture). The Psalm describes wine 'full of mixture' — Rev 14:10 describes wine 'mixed unmixed' (kekerasmenou akratou). The reversal is deliberate: OT judgments were tempered (mixed with mercy); the eschatological judgment is untempered (akratos, unmixed). This is confirmed by the word study on G194 akratos.
Jerusalem's Cup of Wrath — Trajectory Passage¶
Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, [and] wrung [them] out. Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God [that] pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, [even] the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
Context: Isaiah addresses Jerusalem. God gave Jerusalem the cup of His fury to drink, but now removes it. The trajectory: Jerusalem drank the cup and survived — God removed it. In the eschatological application (Rev 14:10), there is no removal. The cup is poured out akratos (unmixed).
Notes: Hebrew vocabulary: kowc (H3563, cup), chemah (H2534, fury/heat — the Hebrew equivalent of Greek thumos). The LXX renders chemah as thumos in wrath passages, establishing the Hebrew-Greek bridge. The cup-of-wrath trajectory: Psa 75:8 (mixed) -> Isa 51:17 (drunk but removed) -> Jer 25:15 (given to nations) -> Rev 14:10 (unmixed, no removal).
The Cup of Wrath Given to All Nations¶
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the LORD'S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me: Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
Context: The broadest OT cup-of-wrath passage. God commands Jeremiah to take the cup of fury and give it to all nations. The phrase 'rise no more' (v.27) indicates finality. The cup cannot be refused (v.28).
Notes: This passage establishes the universality of the cup-of-wrath tradition. Key vocabulary: yayin (H3196, wine), chemah (H2534, fury), kowc (H3563, cup). The phrase 'rise no more' is destruction vocabulary, not torment vocabulary.
Babylon's Golden Cup — Source for the Polarity Flip¶
Babylon [hath been] a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
Context: Jeremiah's oracle against Babylon. Babylon herself is described as a golden cup in God's hand that intoxicated the nations. This is the direct OT source for Rev 14:8 (Babylon makes nations drink) and the polarity flip to 14:10 (God makes beast-worshippers drink).
Notes: The polarity flip documented in 3am-11: Babylon's cup (Jer 51:7 / Rev 14:8) contains seductive wine; God's cup (Rev 14:10) contains judgment wine. The terminal genitive swaps from 'her fornication' to 'God's wrath.'
The Sister-Cup Passage — Cup of Astonishment and Desolation¶
Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. Thou shalt even drink it and suck [it] out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken [it], saith the Lord GOD.
Context: Ezekiel's allegory of Jerusalem and Samaria as sisters. Jerusalem must drink the same cup Samaria drank — a cup of desolation and destruction. The imagery of drinking every last drop and breaking the cup itself emphasizes thoroughness.
Notes: Adds 'desolation' vocabulary to the cup tradition. The cup produces astonishment and desolation — destruction imagery, not eternal torment.
Edom's Smoke Ascending Forever — Primary OT Parallel to Rev 14:11¶
And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.
Context: Isaiah's oracle against Edom. The destruction is described with maximal 'forever' language: smoke ascending forever, fire unquenched night nor day, waste from generation to generation. Yet verse 11 describes animals dwelling in the ruins — proving the 'forever' language is rhetorical convention for completed, permanent destruction, not literal endless burning.
Notes: Hebrew parser confirms: le-olam (H5769, forever) for the smoke ascending, and le-netsach netsachim (H5331, perpetuity of perpetuities) — the STRONGEST Hebrew 'forever' form — yet animals dwell there (v.11-17). Verbal parallel to Rev 14:11 confirmed by cross-testament parallels tool (Jesaia 34:10 scored highest at 0.401 for Rev 14:11 OT parallels). LXX of Isa 34:10 uses aiona chronon while Revelation uses eis aionas aionon — intensified form, but both referring to completed destruction.
Animals Dwelling in Edom's Ruins — Proof the 'Forever' Was Rhetorical¶
But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none [shall be] there, and all her princes shall be nothing. And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, [and] a court for owls. The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. There shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate. Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them. And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath divided it unto them by line: they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein.
Context: Continuation of the Edom oracle. After describing 'forever' fire and smoke (34:10), Isaiah describes animals making nests and dwelling in the ruins. The same phrase 'for ever, from generation to generation' now describes animal habitation — the land is desolate, not still burning. This is the decisive proof that 'smoke ascending forever' is OT prophetic convention for permanent, completed destruction.
Notes: The 'rest' word in v.14 (the screech owl 'rests' there) uses Hebrew nuwach — the same rest vocabulary family. Even animals find rest in what was supposedly 'forever burning.'
Who Dwells with Everlasting Burnings? The Righteous.¶
The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; He shall dwell on high: his place of defence [shall be] the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters [shall be] sure.
Context: Isaiah asks who can dwell with the devouring fire and everlasting burnings. The answer is not 'the wicked in eternal torment' but 'the righteous' — those who walk uprightly. The fire characterizes God's nature, not a punishment chamber. The righteous dwell safely with the consuming fire; the wicked are consumed by it.
Notes: EGW corpus lead verified: 'Same fire is consuming fire to wicked, sun and shield to righteous' (CFL 88.4). Confirmed by this passage: the fire is one; what varies is the relationship to it. Cf. Mal 4:1-2 where the same 'day' burns like an oven for wicked but brings healing for righteous.
The Sodom Paradigm — Fire Falls, Smoke Seen Next Morning¶
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
Context: The foundational fire-and-brimstone judgment. Fire falls in v.24 (the agent). Abraham sees smoke the next morning in v.28 (the witness). The cities are destroyed — not eternally tormented. This establishes the fire-as-agent / smoke-as-witness distinction.
Notes: The smoke vocabulary in Gen 19:28 uses qiytowr (H7008), which shares the q-t-r root with qatar/qetoreth (burn incense / incense). Judgment smoke and worship smoke share the same root — both ascend 'before God.' Sodom is now ashes (2 Pet 2:6, tephroo G5077) — the paradigm for 'eternal fire' producing a completed result.
Babylon's Smoke Ascending Forever — Same Formula as Rev 14:11¶
And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.
Context: After Babylon's destruction is narrated in Rev 17-18, this verse applies the IDENTICAL smoke-ascending formula used in Rev 14:11. Since Babylon's destruction is documented as complete (18:21-23 fivefold 'found no more at all'), the formula cannot mean the entity is still burning.
Notes: This is the most decisive internal evidence. The same formula (smoke ascending eis tous aionas ton aionon) is applied to Babylon, whose complete cessation is documented five times in 18:21-23. If 'smoke ascending forever' means Babylon's COMPLETED destruction, it means the same for beast-worshippers in 14:11.
Fivefold 'Found No More at All' — Babylon's Complete Cessation¶
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast [it] into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft [he be], shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Context: Revelation 18 narrates Babylon's fall. Five categories of life cease completely: (1) found no more, (2) music heard no more, (3) craftsmanship found no more, (4) light shines no more, (5) voices heard no more. Total cessation. Yet 19:3 says her smoke rises 'for ever and ever' — proving the formula describes permanent completion, not ongoing burning.
Notes: The fivefold 'no more' (ou me ... eti) is the strongest possible cessation language in Greek. Combined with 19:3's 'smoke ascending forever,' this proves the formula means: the destruction is permanent and its evidence (smoke) is perpetual testimony.
The Definitive Eschatological Outcome — Ashes Under Feet¶
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do [this], saith the LORD of hosts.
Context: Malachi's eschatological prophecy. The final chapter before the 400 silent years. The day burns like an oven (tanur, H8574). The wicked are stubble (qash, H7179). Neither root (sheresh, H8328) nor branch (anaph, H6057) remains. The wicked become ashes (epher, H665) under the feet of the righteous. Context (3:14-18) distinguishes righteous from wicked in a manner unfulfilled in history, establishing this as eschatological.
Notes: Hebrew parser confirms key vocabulary: tannuwr (H8574, oven/furnace), qash (H7179, stubble), sheresh (H8328, root), anaph (H6057, branch), epher (H665, ashes/dust). The root-and-branch idiom means total elimination. EGW interprets root = Satan, branches = followers (FLB 358.3). Whether or not one accepts that specific identification, the idiom's meaning is clear: NOTHING remains. The righteous tread on ASHES — not tormented beings. This is the most explicit OT statement of the final outcome.
Sodom Suffered Vengeance of Eternal Fire — Yet Now Ashes¶
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Context: Jude uses Sodom as an example (deigma) of divine judgment. The cities 'suffer the vengeance of eternal fire' (puros aioniou). Yet 2 Peter 2:6 says God 'turned them to ashes' (tephroo). Eternal fire produced ashes — not eternal burning.
Notes: Parser confirms: puros (G4442, fire, genitive), aioniou (G166, eternal, genitive), diken (G1349, vengeance/justice, accusative), hupechousai (G5254, suffering/undergoing, present active participle). The present participle hupechousai ('suffering') describes the ONGOING EXAMPLE status — the ruined cities continue to serve as an example. The fire itself is not still burning. 'Eternal fire' = fire from the eternal God producing permanent results, as established in the eternal-fire prior study.
Sodom Turned to Ashes — The Result of 'Eternal Fire'¶
And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned [them] with an overthrow, making [them] an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
Context: Peter's parallel to Jude 7. The verb tephroo (G5077, hapax — to turn to ashes) describes Sodom's fate. The aorist participle tephrosás indicates completed action. The result is an ensample (hupodeigma, G5262) for the ungodly.
Notes: Parser confirms: tephrosás (G5077, aorist active participle — completed action of reducing to ashes), katastrophe (G2692, overthrow), hupodeigma (G5262, example/pattern). Peter selects tephroo rather than generic burning verbs precisely because the ash-result is the theological point: ashes are what 'eternal fire' produces.
Subject Differentiation at the Lake of Fire — Devoured vs. Tormented¶
And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Context: Revelation 20 narrates the post-millennium events. Human followers of Satan (v.9) are DEVOURED by fire from heaven. The devil, beast, and false prophet (v.10) are cast into the lake of fire and tormented. Different verbs for different subjects.
Notes: Parser confirms the vocabulary differentiation: v.9 uses katephagen (G2719, katesthio — aorist active indicative: 'devoured') for HUMAN followers. v.10 uses basanisthesontai (G928, basanizo — future passive indicative: 'shall be tormented') for the devil, beast, and false prophet. The subjects of 'tormented forever' are non-human/symbolic entities. The beast is explicitly destined for 'destruction/perdition' (apoleia, G684) in Rev 17:8,11 — yet later 'tormented.' Stott argues the beast and false prophet are 'powers of evil, not individual persons.' Rev 20:14-15 uses 'second death' (thanatos, G2288) for human wicked.
Second Death — Final Vocabulary for Human Wicked¶
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Context: The lake of fire is explicitly defined as 'the second death.' Human wicked are described with death vocabulary, not torment vocabulary. Death and Hades themselves are destroyed — the last enemy abolished (1 Cor 15:26).
Notes: Parser confirms: thanatos (G2288, death), hades (G86), eblethisan (G906, ballo — aorist passive: 'were cast'), limnen (G3041, lake), puros (G4442, fire). The defining term for human fate is 'second death' — death vocabulary, not torment vocabulary. Parser on 1 Cor 15:26 confirms: katargeitai (G2673, katargeo — present passive: 'is being destroyed/abolished') applied to death itself. If death is the last enemy destroyed, then death ceases to exist — and those in the 'second death' cease to exist.
Seven Last Plagues as Unmixed Wrath — Close of Intercession¶
And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: The seven last plagues are described as filling up God's wrath (thumos, G2372). The temple is filled with smoke so that no one can enter — intercession has ceased. Haskell connects 'without mixture' in Rev 14:10 to these plagues (BHB 58.3).
Notes: Haskell's connection verified: akratos (unmixed) in 14:10 maps to the plagues as 'wrath without mercy' — no intercessor in the temple (15:8). Smith/Loughborough connected 'without mixture' to the close of probation and absence of intercessor (DAR1909 681.1, QSM 44.2). Verified against Rev 15:8 (no one could enter the temple) and Dan 12:1 (Michael stands up — close of probation).
Perish vs. Eternal Life — The Fundamental Binary¶
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Context: The most familiar verse in Scripture. The binary is explicit: PERISH (apollymi, G622) vs. ETERNAL LIFE (zoe aionios). Not 'eternal torment vs. eternal bliss' but 'destruction vs. life.'
Notes: Apollymi (G622) — 'to destroy fully, to perish.' The fundamental binary in didactic teaching is death/destruction vs. life, not torment vs. bliss.
Wages of Sin Is Death — Not Eternal Torment¶
For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Context: Paul's clearest statement of the binary. The wage earned by sin is DEATH (thanatos, G2288), not eternal torment. The gift counterpart is eternal LIFE. The contrast demands that death means the opposite of life.
Notes: Thanatos (G2288, death) as the wage. The opposite of eternal life is death — cessation of life, not continued existence in torment.
Fear Him Who Can Destroy Both Soul and Body in Gehenna¶
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Context: Jesus teaches his disciples about true vs. false fear. Humans can kill the body. God can destroy (apollymi, G622) BOTH soul (psyche, G5590) AND body in gehenna. If God destroys the soul, the soul ceases to exist.
Notes: Apollymi (G622) applied to psyche (G5590, soul/life). The soul is not inherently immortal — God can destroy it. 1 Tim 6:16 confirms: God ALONE has immortality (athanasia, G110). The wicked do not possess the immortality needed for eternal conscious torment.
Everlasting Destruction from the Presence of the Lord¶
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
Context: Paul describes the fate of the disobedient at Christ's return. The punishment is 'everlasting destruction' (olethros aionios) — destruction vocabulary with aionios qualifier. Following the Hebrews pattern (aionios + result-noun = permanent result of completed act): everlasting destruction = destroyed once, result permanent.
Notes: Olethros (G3639, destruction) + aionios (G166, everlasting). The Hebrews pattern: eternal redemption (Heb 9:12 — redeemed once, result permanent), eternal judgment (Heb 6:2), eternal salvation (Heb 5:9). Same pattern: eternal destruction = destroyed once, result permanent. Bohr's process/result distinction verified (MTSD Lesson #15).
God All in All — The Clean Universe Requires Evil's Cessation¶
Then [cometh] the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy [that] shall be destroyed [is] death. For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under [him, it is] manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
Context: Paul describes the final state: ALL enemies destroyed (including death itself), God 'all in all.' If evil persists eternally in a torture chamber, God is not 'all in all' — evil coexists eternally with God.
Notes: Parser confirms 1 Cor 15:26: katargeitai (G2673, katargeo — present passive: 'is being destroyed/abolished') applied to thanatos (G2288, death). Death is the LAST enemy destroyed. If death itself ceases to exist, then the 'second death' is not an eternal state but a final act of destruction. Froom's dualism argument verified (CFF1 413.1): eternal torment means evil coexists with God forever, contradicting 'God all in all.'
No More Pain, All Things New — Eternal Torment IS Pain Continuing¶
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Context: The new creation. No more death, sorrow, crying, or pain. Former things passed away. ALL things new. Eternal conscious torment IS pain continuing forever — contradicting 'no more pain.'
Notes: The promise of 'no more pain' (ponos, G4192) is categorical. If eternal torment continues somewhere in God's universe, pain has NOT passed away. EGW's clean-universe argument verified (ARSH Dec 8, 1859): 'Eternal hell — then must sin be an eternally disturbing force in the universe.'
Affliction Shall Not Rise Up the Second Time¶
What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
Context: Nahum's oracle. God will make an utter end (kalah, H3615 — to complete, consume) of evil. Affliction will not rise a second time. If the wicked are tormented eternally, affliction rises perpetually — contradicting this promise.
Notes: Hebrew kalah (H3615) — to complete, make an end, consume. God makes an UTTER END. Combined with 'affliction shall not rise up the second time,' this eliminates the possibility of eternal ongoing affliction.
God Alone Has Immortality — The Wicked Cannot Burn Eternally¶
Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom [be] honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Context: Paul's doxology describing God's unique attributes. God ALONE (monos) has immortality (athanasia, G110). If the wicked do not possess immortality, they cannot endure eternally in any state — torment or otherwise.
Notes: Athanasia (G110) — 'deathlessness.' Occurs only 3x in NT: 1 Cor 15:53-54 (the righteous PUT ON immortality at resurrection) and here. The wicked never receive this gift. Froom's argument verified (CFF1 494.5): eternal torment requires the wicked to possess immortality they do not have.
Satan Reduced to Ashes and 'Never Shalt Thou Be Any More'¶
Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never [shalt] thou [be] any more.
Context: Ezekiel's lament over the king of Tyre, widely understood as addressing the power behind the throne — Satan. Fire devours, reduces to ashes, and the result is 'never shalt thou be any more' (ayin + ad-olam). The same being as Rev 20:10.
Notes: If Satan — the same being 'tormented for ever and ever' in Rev 20:10 — is reduced to ashes and 'never shalt thou be any more,' then 'for ever and ever' in 20:10 describes the permanence of the destruction, not ongoing conscious existence. Bohr verified (MTSD Lesson #15): 'Satan will become ashes and be no more.' Grammar reference entry (ezk-28-16-18-divine-judgment-verb-chain.md) documents the verb chain: fire as feminine grammatical subject reducing the being to ashes.
Everlasting Fire and Everlasting Punishment — ECT Proof Text¶
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Context: The sheep and goats judgment. The wicked go into 'everlasting fire' (pur aionion) and 'everlasting punishment' (kolasis aionios). The parallel with 'life eternal' (zoe aionios) is the strongest ECT argument. But aionios + result-noun follows the Hebrews pattern: eternal redemption, eternal judgment, eternal salvation — all describe permanent results of completed acts.
Notes: Kolasis (G2851) — punishment/curtailment (from kolazo, to curtail). 2 occurrences in NT: Matt 25:46 and 1 Joh 4:18. The Hebrews pattern resolves the parallel: eternal life = life that never ends (because the subject IS alive); eternal punishment = punishment whose RESULT never ends (the subject is punished, the result is permanent). The fire is 'prepared for the devil and his angels' (v.41) — not originally for humans.
Unquenchable Fire and Undying Worm — ECT Proof Text, OT Source Is Corpses¶
And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Context: Jesus warns about gehenna. The source text is Isaiah 66:24, which describes worms and fire consuming CORPSES (peger) — not living, conscious beings. 'Unquenchable' means the fire cannot be extinguished by human effort — not that it burns forever. Matt 3:12 uses the same term for chaff burned with unquenchable fire — the chaff is consumed.
Notes: Isaiah 66:24 source text: 'And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases (peger) of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched.' The subjects are CORPSES, not conscious beings. Fudge (via Gospel Coalition): 'The devouring worm eats what is already dead.' Unquenchable fire consumes completely — cf. Matt 3:12 where chaff is burned up with unquenchable fire.
Worm and Fire on Corpses — OT Source for Mark 9:43-48¶
And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
Context: The final verse of Isaiah. The righteous go out and look upon CARCASES (peger — dead bodies). The worm and fire work on dead bodies, not living conscious beings. This is the source text Jesus quotes in Mark 9.
Notes: Hebrew peger = dead body, corpse, carcass. The objects of the worm and fire are dead, not alive. This is destruction vocabulary, not torment vocabulary.
Incense Smoke Ascending Before God — Judicial Parallel to Judgment Smoke¶
And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer [it] with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, [which came] with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
Context: Heavenly temple scene. Incense smoke (carrying prayers of the saints) ascends before God (enopion tou theou). The same 'before/in the presence of' language (enopion) used in Rev 14:10 for judgment. Smoke ascending 'in the presence of the Lamb' parallels incense ascending 'in the presence of God' — judicial testimony, not spectated suffering.
Notes: The incense-judgment symmetry established in the smoke-imagery-hebrew-mind prior study: qitor (judgment smoke) and qetoreth (worship smoke) share the q-t-r root. Both ascend 'before God.' The enopion language in Rev 14:10 carries judicial weight — the smoke is testimony of completed judgment, not ongoing torture entertainment.
Fire, Brimstone, and Horrible Tempest — The Portion of Their Cup¶
Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: [this shall be] the portion of their cup.
Context: David describes God's judgment on the wicked. Fire and brimstone are 'the portion of their cup' — connecting fire-brimstone imagery with cup-of-wrath imagery in a single OT verse.
Notes: Links fire-brimstone to the cup tradition. The 'cup' (kowc, H3563) here contains fire and brimstone — the same elements in Rev 14:10. This unifies the cup-of-wrath trajectory with the fire-and-brimstone imagery.
Basanismos with Five-Month Time Limit — Torment Has Bounded Duration¶
And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment [was] as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
Context: Fifth trumpet. Demonic locusts torment (basanizo, G928) people for five months. This is the same basanismos (G929) vocabulary used in Rev 14:11, but with an explicit time limit.
Notes: Basanismos (G929) with explicit five-month boundary. This proves the vocabulary itself does not demand endless duration. 3 of 6 NT basanismos occurrences describe Babylon's COMPLETED destruction (18:7, 10, 15). 1 has a five-month limit (9:5). Peterson/Beale's claim that basanismos 'never means annihilation' is misleading — 3 of 6 describe a completed entity's destruction.
Basanismos Applied to Babylon's Completed Destruction¶
How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
Context: Three uses of basanismos in a single chapter, all describing Babylon — an entity whose complete destruction is documented in 18:21-23. If basanismos can describe a COMPLETED destruction (as it does 3 times here), it does not require ongoing conscious existence.
Notes: Basanismos (G929) used of Babylon's torment-grief at judgment. Babylon is completely destroyed (18:21-23, fivefold 'no more'). Yet basanismos describes her experience. This decisively qualifies Peterson's claim that basanismos always means ongoing conscious suffering — it can describe the anguish of the destruction process itself.
Wrath of the Lamb — Orge Applied to Judgment Scene¶
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Context: Sixth seal. The wicked flee from the 'wrath (orge) of the Lamb.' This is orge without thumos — settled judicial anger. The progression: orge alone in 6:16-17 → thumos alone in 14:8,19 → thumos + orge combined in 14:10, 16:19, 19:15.
Notes: Orge (G3709) applied to the Lamb — judicial anger. The wrath trajectory through Revelation escalates from orge alone to thumos+orge combined.
Beast Destined for Perdition — Yet Later 'Tormented'¶
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
Context: The beast is twice described as going into 'perdition' (apoleia, G684 — destruction). Yet in Rev 20:10, the same beast is 'tormented for ever and ever.' If apoleia means destruction/cessation, and the beast goes to apoleia, then the 'torment' of 20:10 describes the destruction process, not eternal conscious existence.
Notes: Apoleia (G684) — destruction/perdition. The beast's destiny is explicitly 'destruction' (17:8, 11). ECT argues 'destruction' doesn't mean cessation because the beast is later 'tormented.' But the opposite argument is equally valid: the beast goes to DESTRUCTION, so the 'torment' describes the destruction process. The beast is a symbolic entity (Rev 13), not an individual person.
Whose End Is Destruction — Didactic Destruction Vocabulary¶
Whose end [is] destruction, whose God [is their] belly, and [whose] glory [is] in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
Context: Paul describes enemies of the cross. Their END (telos) is DESTRUCTION (apoleia, G684). Didactic teaching uses destruction vocabulary consistently.
Notes: Apoleia (G684) — destruction. Another didactic passage using destruction, not torment, for the fate of the wicked.
God Is a Consuming Fire — Fire Characterizes Divine Nature¶
For the LORD thy God [is] a consuming fire, [even] a jealous God.
Context: Moses describes God's nature. God IS a consuming fire. The fire is not a torture instrument — it is who God is. Heb 12:29 reaffirms: 'Our God is a consuming fire.' The fire CONSUMES — it does not preserve for eternal torment.
Notes: The fire characterizes God, not a punishment duration. Combined with Isa 33:14-16 (the righteous dwell with everlasting burnings), the picture is of God's nature as fire that purifies the righteous and consumes the wicked.
Our God Is a Consuming Fire — NT Reaffirmation¶
For our God [is] a consuming fire.
Context: The author of Hebrews quotes Deuteronomy 4:24. God IS a consuming fire. Fire consumes — it does not preserve.
Notes: NT reaffirmation of Deu 4:24. The word 'consuming' (katanalisko) means to use up, consume completely.
Lake of Fire and Brimstone = The Second Death¶
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Context: The lake of fire is explicitly identified as 'the second death.' Not 'the second life of torment' — the second DEATH. Death vocabulary for the final fate of the wicked.
Notes: The lake of fire = second death. Death is cessation of life, not continuation of consciousness. This is Revelation's own definition of the lake of fire.
Chaff Burned with Unquenchable Fire — Consuming, Not Preserving¶
Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Context: John the Baptist describes the Messiah's judgment. The chaff is BURNED UP (katakaio) with unquenchable fire. The fire is unquenchable — it cannot be put out until it finishes its work. The chaff is consumed, not preserved.
Notes: Katakaio = to burn down, consume completely. Unquenchable (asbestos) means the fire cannot be extinguished by external force — not that it burns forever. The chaff ceases to exist.
Wicked Shall Not Be; Consume Into Smoke¶
For yet a little while, and the wicked [shall] not [be]: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it [shall] not [be]. But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD [shall be] as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
Context: David's wisdom psalm. The wicked 'shall not be' — they cease to exist. They 'consume into smoke' — the same smoke-as-witness-of-completed-destruction image.
Notes: The wicked SHALL NOT BE (ayin) — cessation of existence. They consume into smoke — smoke is the residue/witness, not the ongoing experience.
As Though They Had Not Been — Complete Non-Existence¶
For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, [so] shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
Context: Obadiah's prophecy. The nations drink God's judgment cup and become 'as though they had not been' — complete non-existence.
Notes: The phrase 'as though they had not been' is the strongest possible annihilation language. Combined with the cup-of-wrath imagery, it connects the judgment cup to cessation of existence.
Stubble Burned — Not a Coal to Warm At¶
Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.
Context: Isaiah's oracle against Babylon. The wicked become stubble consumed by fire. The result: not even a coal remains. The fire does its work completely and then is finished — no ongoing burning.
Notes: Key phrase: 'there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.' After the fire finishes, NOTHING remains — not even embers. The fire is complete, final, and finished.
Michael Stands Up — Close of Probation Context¶
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Context: Daniel's prophecy of the close of probation. Michael (Christ) stands up — intercession ceases. A time of trouble follows. Those written in the book are delivered. Smith/Loughborough connected 'without mixture' (akratos) to this cessation of intercession.
Notes: Verified: Smith/Loughborough connection (DAR1909 681.1, QSM 44.2). When Michael stands up (Dan 12:1) and the temple fills with smoke so no one can enter (Rev 15:8), intercession ceases. The wrath poured out 'without mixture' = judgment without mercy, without intercessor.
Babylon's Wine - Polarity Flip Source¶
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Context: Second angel. Babylon's wine of seduction becomes God's wine of judgment in 14:10.
Notes: The genitive chain here (tou oinou tou thymou tes porneias autes) swaps terminal genitive to (tou theou) in 14:10.
Temple Filled with Smoke - Close of Intercession¶
And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Context: No one can enter the temple during the plagues - intercession has ceased. Connects to akratos (unmixed) = wrath without mercy-dilution.
Notes: Verified Smith/Loughborough connection: without mixture = close of probation, no intercessor.
Eternal Redemption - Hebrews Pattern¶
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us].
Context: The Hebrews pattern: aionios + result-noun. Eternal redemption = redeemed once, result permanent.
Notes: Hebrews pattern: eternal redemption (9:12), eternal judgment (6:2), eternal salvation (5:9).
Eternal Salvation - Same Hebrews Pattern¶
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Context: Eternal salvation = saved once, result permanent. Same aionios + result-noun pattern.
Notes: Third instance of the Hebrews pattern.
Eternal Judgment - Same Hebrews Pattern¶
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
Context: Eternal judgment = judged once, result permanent.
Notes: Second instance of the Hebrews pattern.
Topheth Prepared - Brimstone as Divine Judgment¶
For Tophet [is] ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made [it] deep [and] large: the pile thereof [is] fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.
Context: Topheth (place of burning) prepared with brimstone. Divine judgment imagery.
Notes: Brimstone (gophriyth H1614) as divine judgment agent.
Sodom/Gomorrah Comparison - Brimstone and Salt¶
[And that] the whole land thereof [is] brimstone, and salt, [and] burning, [that] it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
Context: Moses uses Sodom as paradigm of divine wrath.
Notes: Sodom as archetypal judgment paradigm in Mosaic context.
Jesus References Sodom - Fire and Brimstone¶
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed [them] all.
Context: Jesus uses Sodom as paradigm for sudden judgment.
Notes: Jesus uses destruction vocabulary: destroyed (apollymi G622) them ALL.
Babylon Overthrown Like Sodom¶
And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
Context: Isaiah uses Sodom as paradigm for Babylon's destruction.
Notes: Sodom-pattern applied to Babylon: total overthrow.
Moab/Ammon Like Sodom - Perpetual Desolation¶
Therefore [as] I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, [even] the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.
Context: Perpetual desolation = permanent result.
Notes: Perpetual desolation = permanent result of completed destruction.
Stubble Consumed - OT Consuming Fire Pattern¶
And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, [which] consumed them as stubble.
Context: Song of Moses. God's wrath CONSUMED enemies as stubble.
Notes: Wrath consumed as stubble (qash H7179). Consuming fire vocabulary.
Wicked as Stubble Before the Wind¶
They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
Context: Job describes the wicked's transience.
Notes: Transience imagery. Stubble is worthless and temporary.
Rich Man and Lazarus - Parabolic Genre¶
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that [would come] from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Context: Parable using common imagery for earthly stewardship teaching. ECT uses this for conscious afterlife torment, but parabolic genre and pre-resurrection setting must be considered.
Notes: Parabolic genre. Torment language (basanizo) here is pre-resurrection/interim, not post-judgment final state.
Sabbatismos Rest - Thematic Connection to Anapausis¶
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Context: The sabbatismos (G4520) rest promised to God's people.
Notes: Sabbatismos (G4520) links Sabbath-keeping to eschatological rest. Same rest vocabulary inverted in Rev 14:11.
Wicked Perish in Their Own Corruption¶
But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
Context: Peter uses destruction vocabulary.
Notes: Destruction vocabulary in didactic context.
Wicked Perish as Wax Before Fire¶
As smoke is driven away, [so] drive [them] away: as wax melteth before the fire, [so] let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
Context: David uses smoke and wax imagery. Wicked PERISH at God's presence.
Notes: Wicked perish (abad) at the PRESENCE of God.
Israel Compared to Sodom¶
Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
Context: Isaiah calls Israel's rulers 'rulers of Sodom' - using Sodom as paradigm.
Notes: Sodom as paradigmatic judgment language.
Overthrown as God Overthrew Sodom¶
I have overthrown [some] of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
Context: Amos uses Sodom as paradigm. Total destruction.
Notes: Sodom-paradigm: total destruction. Survival only by being plucked out.
Animals Dwelling in Edom's Ruins - Proof Forever Was Rhetorical (duplicate of Isa 34:11-17)¶
Context: Continuation of Edom oracle. After forever fire/smoke (34:10), animals make nests. The land is desolate, not still burning.
Notes: Animals dwell in what was supposedly forever burning. Proof the forever language is rhetorical convention.
Edom's Smoke Ascending Forever with Animal Habitation (merged range)¶
And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever. But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness.
Context: Edom oracle showing forever language immediately followed by animal habitation.
Notes: See Isa 34:9-10 and Isa 34:11-17 entries for detailed analysis.
Cup of Wrath Given to Nations - Key Verses (see also Jer 25:15-28)¶
Context: Broadest OT cup-of-wrath passage. 'Rise no more' = finality.
Notes: See Jer 25:15-28 entry for full analysis.
Sodom Suffered Vengeance of Eternal Fire (alt reference for Jude 1:7)¶
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Context: Jude uses Sodom as example of divine judgment. Eternal fire produced ashes (2 Pet 2:6).
Notes: See Jude 1:7 entry for full analysis.
Saints' Patience and Blessed Dead Rest (see Rev 14:13)¶
Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed [are] the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Context: Immediately following the third angel's warning. Contrast: beast-worshippers have no rest (14:11); the blessed dead rest (14:13).
Notes: The anapausis vocabulary family: beast-worshippers have NO rest, the righteous REST.
Full Third Angel's Warning with Babylon Context (see Rev 14:9-11)¶
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Context: Full passage including Babylon's wine polarity flip (14:8) and the third angel's warning (14:9-11).
Notes: See Rev 14:9-11 and Rev 14:8 entries for detailed analysis.
