Word Studies¶
Question¶
What is the purpose of this 22-study series on the Three Angels' Messages? How does it build on but go deeper than the Gospel Series (GSP), which proved the 3AM are the gospel? What is the relationship to the LGT, SV, and other series? Map the text of Rev 14:6-12 verse by verse and show how the 22 studies will cover every phrase, every theological connection, and every major objection. Include Rev 14:1-5 (preceding context) and Rev 14:13-20 (following context).
G2098 — euangelion¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2098-euangelion.md
Occurrences: 77
euangelion (gospel/good news) occurs 77x in NT, only ONCE in Revelation (14:6). The anarthrous construction with aionios is a hapax pairing. The word carries the full weight of the OT basar tradition through the LXX bridge (basar→euangelizo, PMI 29.44).
Semantic categories: gospel proclamation, good news, kingdom message
Key verses: Rev 14:6, Mark 1:1, Rom 1:16, 1 Cor 15:1
Relevance: Core term — the three angels' messages ARE called euangelion. The sole Revelation occurrence makes this the definitive identification of the passage as gospel.
G2097 — euangelizo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2097-euangelizo.md
Occurrences: 61
euangelizo (to preach good news) — the verb form in Rev 14:6 (euangelisai, aorist active infinitive). Tightest verb-to-verb LXX bridge with Hebrew basar H1319 (PMI 29.44). The angel does what Isaiah's herald does: proclaims the good news of God's reign.
Semantic categories: gospel proclamation, preaching, heralding
Key verses: Rev 14:6, Isa 40:9, Isa 52:7, Isa 61:1, Luke 4:18
Relevance: The verb form connecting the angel's action to the OT basar tradition through the LXX. Confirms textual identity between the angel's message and the OT gospel.
G166 — aionios¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G166-aionios.md
Occurrences: 71
aionios (everlasting/eternal) — usually modifies 'life' (43x); modifies 'gospel' only in Rev 14:6 (hapax pairing). Emphasizes that of which time is not a measure. The gospel is characterized by its everlasting nature, not a second gospel alongside Paul's.
Semantic categories: temporal scope, eternity, permanence
Key verses: Rev 14:6, John 3:16, Rom 6:23, 2 Tim 1:9
Relevance: The modifier that identifies the gospel of Rev 14:6 as THE eternal gospel reaching back to God's pre-creation purpose. Confirms the gospel has always existed.
G5399 — phobeo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5399-phobeo.md
Occurrences: 110
phobeo (to fear/revere) — phobethete in Rev 14:7 is aorist passive imperative. LXX bridge to Hebrew yare H3372 (241 co-occurrences, PMI 31.55). Rev 14:7's usage is 'reverent awe of God' — distinct from 1 John 4:18's fear with punishment.
Semantic categories: reverence, awe, godly fear
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Ecc 12:13, Deu 10:12, 1 Pet 2:17
Relevance: First command of the first angel's message. The fear/worship connection: proskyneo is the behavioral expression of godly fear (WG-fear).
G1391 — doxa¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1391-doxa.md
Occurrences: 168
doxa (glory) — LXX bridge to Hebrew kabod H3519 (170 co-occurrences). In NT carries the full Shekinah weight — not 'reputation' but the visible divine presence. 'Give glory to him' (Rev 14:7) echoes Josh 7:19, Isa 42:12.
Semantic categories: divine presence, honor, worship response
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Isa 42:12, Josh 7:19, 1 Cor 6:20
Relevance: Second element of the first angel's command. Nave's groups Rev 14:7 under 'Glorifying God for his judgments' — giving glory specifically in the context of judgment.
G2920 — krisis¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2920-krisis.md
Occurrences: 48
krisis (judgment/judicial process) — emphasizes the trial itself, not just the verdict (krima) or condemnation (katakrima). LXX translates Aramaic dina (Dan 7:10,22,26) as krisis, creating the chain: dina → mishpat → krisis → Rev 14:7. For believers, krisis is good news because it vindicates (Dan 7:22).
Semantic categories: judicial process, investigation, examination
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Dan 7:10, Dan 7:22, John 5:24, Rom 2:16
Relevance: Central term — 'the hour of his judgment is come.' The judgment-as-vindication framework (from SV series) transforms krisis from threatening to liberating for believers.
G4352 — proskyneo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4352-proskyneo.md
Occurrences: 65
proskyneo (to worship/bow down) — LXX bridge to Hebrew shachah H7812 (155 co-occurrences, PMI 6.94). Appears on BOTH sides of the Rev 14 conflict: worship the Creator (14:7) vs. worship the beast (14:9,11). This makes worship the central organizing theme of all three messages.
Semantic categories: worship, obeisance, allegiance
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Rev 14:9, Rev 14:11, Rev 13:4, Rev 13:8, Rev 13:12
Relevance: THE central unifying theme. Worship appears in each angel's message: first angel (positive command), third angel (negative warning). The worship binary has no middle ground — BRI confirms worship is the organizing principle.
G4160 — poieo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4160-poieo.md
Occurrences: 597
poieo (to make/do) — highest-confidence LXX pair with Hebrew asah H6213 (2022 co-occurrences). poiesanti in Rev 14:7 (aorist active participle, dative) identifies God as Creator using the same verb as Exo 20:11 LXX (epoiesen). The creation-worship connection.
Semantic categories: creation, making, doing
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Exo 20:11, Acts 4:24, Acts 14:15, Neh 9:6
Relevance: The verb linking Rev 14:7 to the Fourth Commandment's creation rationale. The highest-confidence LXX pair establishes this as a deliberate quotation, not vague allusion.
G5480 — charagma¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5480-charagma.md
Occurrences: 9
charagma (mark/stamp/impress) — the mark of the beast. Appears in Rev 13:16-17 (imposed by earth beast), Rev 14:9,11 (warned against by third angel), Rev 19:20, 20:4. Parody antithesis with sphragis (seal) of God.
Semantic categories: mark, stamp, allegiance symbol
Key verses: Rev 14:9, Rev 14:11, Rev 13:16, Rev 13:17, Rev 19:20
Relevance: The third angel specifically warns against receiving charagma. The seal/mark contrast (sphragis vs. charagma) frames the entire worship binary.
G4098 — pipto¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4098-pipto.md
Occurrences: 93
pipto (to fall) — epesen epesen in Rev 14:8 uses the prophetic aorist (treating future judgment as already accomplished). Direct echo of Isa 21:9 LXX. The doubled form intensifies certainty and completeness.
Semantic categories: falling, collapse, judgment
Key verses: Rev 14:8, Rev 18:2, Isa 21:9
Relevance: The second angel's key verb. The prophetic aorist is a critical grammatical feature — Babylon's fall is announced as certain though not yet fully visible.
G2372 — thumos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2372-thumos.md
Occurrences: 18
thumos (wrath/passionate fury) — turbulent, commotion-type anger. Distinguished from orge (settled, judicial wrath). Appears in Rev 14:8 (Babylon's wine of thumos), 14:10 (God's wine of thumos), 14:19 (winepress of thumos). The thumos chain runs through Revelation's judgment sequence.
Semantic categories: passionate wrath, fury, hot anger
Key verses: Rev 14:8, Rev 14:10, Rev 14:19, Rev 15:1, Rev 16:19
Relevance: The wrath vocabulary of the second and third angel's messages. The polarity flip between 14:8 (Babylon's thumos wine) and 14:10 (God's thumos wine) is a key structural observation.
G3709 — orge¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3709-orge.md
Occurrences: 36
orge (wrath/indignation) — settled, enduring, judicial wrath. Distinct from thumos (turbulent passion). In Rev 14:10 both terms appear together: the wine of God's thumos is poured into the cup of His orge. orge provides the judicial framework; thumos describes the intensity.
Semantic categories: judicial wrath, settled anger, divine indignation
Key verses: Rev 14:10, Rom 1:18, Rom 2:5, Eph 5:6
Relevance: Paired with thumos in Rev 14:10 to describe God's complete judgment — both passionate (thumos) and judicially deliberate (orge). The distinction matters: God's judgment is not arbitrary but proportional.
G4202 — porneia¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4202-porneia.md
Occurrences: 26
porneia (fornication/sexual immorality) — in prophetic usage, covenantal vocabulary from OT zanah H2181. Requires prior covenant relationship. Babylon's porneia means spiritual unfaithfulness — apostasy, not paganism.
Semantic categories: spiritual adultery, apostasy, covenantal unfaithfulness
Key verses: Rev 14:8, Rev 17:2, Rev 17:4, Rev 18:3
Relevance: Identifies Babylon as an apostate religious system, not paganism. The zanah/porneia bridge through the LXX confirms the covenantal requirement.
G5281 — hupomone¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5281-hupomone.md
Occurrences: 32
hupomone (patience/endurance) — from hupomeno (to stay under). Active resistance, not passive waiting. 7 of 31 NT occurrences in Revelation (highest density). The hupomone inclusio: Rev 13:10 (opening) → 14:12 (closing, expanded).
Semantic categories: endurance, steadfastness, active resistance
Key verses: Rev 14:12, Rev 13:10, Rom 5:3, Jas 1:3
Relevance: The first descriptor of the saints in Rev 14:12. Under eschatological pressure, the saints endure — they do not retaliate but actively resist through faithfulness.
G1785 — entole¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1785-entole.md
Occurrences: 71
entole (commandment) — LXX bridge to Hebrew mitsvah H4687 (153 co-occurrences, PMI 34.01). 'The commandments of God' in Rev 14:12 points to the specific divine law (articular plural), not general ethical principles. The remnant chain: Rev 12:17, 14:12, 22:14.
Semantic categories: divine law, commandments, Decalogue
Key verses: Rev 14:12, Rev 12:17, Ecc 12:13, Exo 20:6
Relevance: The first object governed by terountes in Rev 14:12. Combined with pistis Iesou, it describes the dual mark of the saints: law-keeping grounded in faith.
G4102 — pistis¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4102-pistis.md
Occurrences: 244
pistis (faith/faithfulness) — pistis Iesou in Rev 14:12 is grammatically ambiguous (subjective or objective genitive). The parallel structure with 'commandments of God' (God = source) suggests Jesus = source of faith (subjective reading). Both readings are valid and likely both intended.
Semantic categories: faith, trust, faithfulness
Key verses: Rev 14:12, Rom 3:22, Gal 2:16, Gal 3:22, Phil 3:9
Relevance: The second object in Rev 14:12. The pistis Iesou tradition connects to Paul's pistis Christou (Rom 3:22, Gal 2:16,20, 3:22, Phil 3:9). If subjective: the saints endure by holding to Jesus' own faithfulness — this IS the gospel.
G5083 — tereo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5083-tereo.md
Occurrences: 75
tereo (to keep/guard/watch over) — terountes in Rev 14:12 is present active participle, describing ongoing habitual action. It identifies a group by their behavior (descriptive), not commanding that behavior (prescriptive). This is the answer to the legalism objection.
Semantic categories: guarding, keeping, observing
Key verses: Rev 14:12, Rev 12:17, John 14:15, 1 John 5:3
Relevance: The participle governing both objects in Rev 14:12. Present tense = ongoing, habitual. Participle (not imperative) = description, not prescription. The saints ARE keepers, not commanded to keep as a salvation condition.
G897 — Babylon¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G897-babylon.md
Occurrences: 12
Babylon (G897) — 11 verses, 12 tokens across 4 NT books. In Revelation, all 6 occurrences are explicitly apocalyptic. The name derives from Hebrew balal H1101 (to confuse/mix) — Babylon's essential character is truth-error confusion. In Rev 14:8, Babylon = apostate religious system.
Semantic categories: apostate religion, confusion, false system
Key verses: Rev 14:8, Rev 16:19, Rev 17:5, Rev 18:2, Rev 18:21
Relevance: The second angel's subject. Prior study rev-14-babylon-three-angels established: Babylon is apostate religion (not paganism), has a mother-daughter structure, and contains God's sincere people who must separate.
G3631 — oinos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3631-oinos.md
Occurrences: 33
oinos (wine) — LXX bridge to Hebrew yayin H3196 (115 co-occurrences, PMI 33.06). In Rev 14, wine imagery appears in both v.8 (Babylon's wine) and v.10 (God's wine) — a polarity flip. Jer 51:7 provides the OT source for the wine-cup-intoxication metaphor.
Semantic categories: wine, intoxication, cup imagery
Key verses: Rev 14:8, Rev 14:10, Jer 51:7, Rev 17:2
Relevance: The polarity flip between Babylon's wine (14:8) and God's wine (14:10) is a key structural observation. The one who made others drink her cup now faces God's cup.
G721 — arnion¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G721-arnion.md
Occurrences: 30
arnion (lamb) — diminutive form used 29x in Revelation for Jesus. Unique to Revelation's Christ-title vocabulary. The Lamb stands on Zion (14:1), is followed by the 144,000 (14:4), and is present during judgment (14:10).
Semantic categories: sacrificial lamb, Christ-title, redeemer
Key verses: Rev 14:1, Rev 14:4, Rev 14:10, Rev 5:6, Rev 5:12
Relevance: The Lamb's presence in Rev 14 supplies the Christological content that critics claim is absent from the first angel's 'natural theism.' The passage is Christ-centered through the Lamb motif.
G536 — aparche¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G536-aparche.md
Occurrences: 8
aparche (firstfruits) — sacrificial vocabulary. The 144,000 are 'firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb' (Rev 14:4). The OT firstfruits pattern (Lev 23:10-14) shows: firstfruits presented FIRST, main harvest follows. 1 Cor 15:20-23 confirms the temporal sequence.
Semantic categories: firstfruits, first portion, harvest pledge
Key verses: Rev 14:4, 1 Cor 15:20, 1 Cor 15:23, Lev 23:10
Relevance: Links the 144,000 (preceding context) to the grain harvest (following context). The firstfruits guarantee a positive full harvest — connecting 14:4 to 14:14-16.
G3107 — makarios¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3107-makarios.md
Occurrences: 50
makarios (blessed/happy) — the second of seven beatitudes in Revelation (14:13). Pronounced on those dying 'in the Lord' from henceforth. The blessedness is confirmed by the Spirit himself.
Semantic categories: blessedness, divine favor, eschatological pronouncement
Key verses: Rev 14:13, Rev 1:3, Mat 5:3, Rev 22:14
Relevance: The beatitude in 14:13 contrasts with the 'no rest' of 14:11. The blessed dead rest; the beast-worshipers have no rest. A deliberate structural reversal.
G373 — anapauo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G373-anapauo.md
Occurrences: 13
anapauo (to rest/refresh) — anapahesontai in Rev 14:13 (future passive, 'they shall rest'). The cognate noun anapausis (G372) appears in 14:11 ('no rest'). Same word family, opposite outcomes. Connects to Sabbath-rest theology (Heb 4:9).
Semantic categories: rest, cessation, Sabbath rest
Key verses: Rev 14:13, Rev 14:11, Heb 4:9, Mat 11:28
Relevance: The rest/no-rest antithesis is the structural reversal linking the third angel's warning (14:11) to the beatitude (14:13). Rest belongs to those who honor the Creator; restlessness belongs to those who worship the beast.
G4221 — poterion¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4221-poterion.md
Occurrences: 33
poterion (cup) — in Rev 14:10, the cup of God's orge (indignation). The OT cup-of-wrath tradition: Psa 75:8, Isa 51:17-22, Jer 25:15-16. The one who made others drink Babylon's cup now faces God's cup.
Semantic categories: cup, wrath vessel, judgment instrument
Key verses: Rev 14:10, Rev 16:19, Psa 75:8, Jer 25:15
Relevance: The cup imagery connects the third angel's warning to the OT cup-of-wrath tradition. The reversal: Babylon's cup (14:8) → God's cup (14:10).
G2041 — ergon¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2041-ergon.md
Occurrences: 176
ergon (work/deed) — in Rev 14:13, 'their works do follow them.' Not as merit for salvation but as grace-given evidence of faithfulness. Connects to the judgment-according-to-works principle (Rev 20:12, Ecc 12:14).
Semantic categories: works, deeds, evidence of faith
Key verses: Rev 14:13, Rev 20:12, Ecc 12:14, Eph 2:10
Relevance: The works that follow the blessed dead (14:13) connect to the judgment announcement (14:7) — God brings every work into judgment (Ecc 12:14).
G5610 — hora¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5610-hora.md
Occurrences: 108
hora (hour) — with the definite article in Rev 14:7 (he hora) = THE specific, appointed hour. Not vague 'judgment is near' but a particular hour that has struck. Marks a specific, scheduled divine appointment.
Semantic categories: appointed time, specific hour, kairos moment
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Rev 14:15, John 5:25, Rev 18:10
Relevance: The definite article marks this as THE appointed judgment hour — linking to Daniel's prophetic timetable (Dan 8:14, 2300 days).
G2424 — Iesous¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2424-Iesous.md
Occurrences: 975
Iesous (Jesus) — in Rev 14:12, the genitive Iesou modifies pistin. The name anchors the saints' faith in a specific person — Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified and risen Christ.
Semantic categories: proper name, Christ-title, personal identification
Key verses: Rev 14:12, Rev 12:17, Rev 19:10
Relevance: The personal name grounds the 'faith of Jesus' in historical reality — not abstract faith but faith connected to a specific person whose faithfulness the saints share.
G929 — basanismos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G929-basanismos.md
Occurrences: 6
basanismos (torment/testing) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 14:11, 'the smoke of their basanismos ascendeth up.' Related to basanizo G928 (to test/torment). The smoke as evidence of completed destruction, not ongoing process (per Isa 34:10 pattern).
Semantic categories: torment, testing, examination
Key verses: Rev 14:11, Rev 9:5, Rev 18:7, Rev 18:10
Relevance: Key term in the third angel's message. Understanding basanismos in light of the Isa 34:10 pattern prevents misreading Rev 14:11 as teaching endless conscious torment.
G2303 — theion¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2303-theion.md
Occurrences: 7
theion (brimstone/sulfur) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 14:10, 'tormented with fire and theion.' Echoes Gen 19:24 (Sodom). Associated with divine judgment throughout Scripture.
Semantic categories: brimstone, sulfur, judgment imagery
Key verses: Rev 14:10, Rev 19:20, Rev 21:8, Gen 19:24
Relevance: The fire-and-brimstone imagery in Rev 14:10 draws from the Sodom destruction pattern. The Sodom precedent (Jude 1:7 + 2 Pet 2:6) establishes 'eternal fire' = permanent destruction, not endless burning.
G4973 — sphragis¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4973-sphragis.md
Occurrences: 16
sphragis (seal) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 7:2 'seal of the living God'; Rev 14:1 shows the result (Father's name in foreheads). Antithesis of charagma (mark). Forehead only = conviction required.
Semantic categories: seal, authentication, divine ownership
Key verses: Rev 7:2, Rev 7:3, Rev 14:1, Eph 1:13
Relevance: The seal/mark contrast (sphragis vs. charagma) is the parody antithesis that frames the worship binary. The seal in 14:1 precedes the three angels; the mark warned against in 14:9-11 is its counterfeit.
G1504 — eikon¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1504-eikon.md
Occurrences: 23
eikon (image) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 14:9,11, the 'image of the beast.' The earth beast causes people to make an eikon to the sea beast (Rev 13:14-15). Warning against worshiping both the beast AND its image.
Semantic categories: image, likeness, representation
Key verses: Rev 14:9, Rev 14:11, Rev 13:14, Rev 13:15
Relevance: The third angel warns against worshiping both the beast and its image — indicating the image is a distinct entity that replicates the beast's character and demands worship.
G2325 — therizo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2325-therizo.md
Occurrences: 24
therizo (to reap grain) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 14:15-16, the grain harvest by the Son of Man. Positive harvest verb — contrast with trygao (grape vintage). John 4:36: 'he that reapeth receiveth wages and gathereth fruit unto life eternal.'
Semantic categories: grain harvest, reaping, positive ingathering
Key verses: Rev 14:15, Rev 14:16, John 4:36, Gal 6:7
Relevance: The lexical distinction between therizo (grain/positive) and trygao (grape/negative) confirms two morally distinct harvests in Rev 14:14-20.
G5166 — trygao¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5166-trygao.md
Occurrences: 3
trygao (to gather grapes/vintage) — newly generated library entry. Only 3 NT occurrences (Luk 6:44; Rev 14:18,19). In Revelation, exclusively for judgment vintage. The negative harvest verb contrasting with therizo.
Semantic categories: grape harvest, vintage, judgment gathering
Key verses: Rev 14:18, Rev 14:19, Luk 6:44
Relevance: The grape-harvest verb confirms the negative character of the second harvest (14:17-20). Joel 3:13 unified; Revelation bifurcates into therizo (salvation) and trygao (judgment).
G4077 — pege¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4077-pege.md
Occurrences: 12
pege (fountain/spring) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 14:7, 'fountains of waters' (pegas hydaton) is the fourth element beyond the Exo 20:11 three-element creation formula (heaven, earth, sea). May echo Gen 7:11 ('fountains of the great deep') or broaden creation scope.
Semantic categories: fountain, spring, water source
Key verses: Rev 14:7, Rev 8:10, Rev 16:4, Gen 7:11
Relevance: The addition of 'fountains of waters' beyond Exo 20:11's formula raises the question of whether Rev 14:7 broadens the creation scope or alludes to additional OT texts.
G2306 — theiodes¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2306-theiodes.md
Occurrences: 1
theiodes (brimstone-like/sulphurous) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 9:17, 'fire and jacinth and brimstone' (theiodes). Related to theion G2303. NT hapax in Rev 9:17.
Semantic categories: sulphurous, brimstone-colored, judgment imagery
Key verses: Rev 9:17
Relevance: Related to the theion in Rev 14:10. The brimstone imagery chain runs through Revelation's judgment passages.
G4718 — staphyle¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4718-staphyle.md
Occurrences: 3
staphyle (grapes/grape cluster) — newly generated library entry. In Rev 14:18, 'her grapes are fully ripe.' Only 3 NT occurrences (Mat 7:16; Luk 6:44; Rev 14:18). The ripeness indicates judgment is ready.
Semantic categories: grapes, fruit, harvest imagery
Key verses: Rev 14:18, Mat 7:16, Luk 6:44
Relevance: The ripe grapes signal that the grape harvest (negative judgment) is ready — wickedness has reached its full measure. Joel 3:13: 'the press is full.'
