Question¶
What is 'the wine of the wrath of her fornication' (Rev 14:8)? What specific categories of false teaching constitute Babylon's wine? How does the intoxication metaphor work — Jeremiah 51:7, Psalm 75:8, the polarity flip in Rev 14:8-10? What are the bdelygmata (abominations, G946) that fill Babylon's cup (Rev 17:4) — trace bdelygma back to OT towebah (H8441) and shiqquwts (H8251) to identify the categories (idolatry, occult practices, turning from God's law, sun-worship as in Ezek 8:16). What does pharmakeia (G5331, Rev 18:23) add — not just intellectual error but cognitive poison? Does the text identify specific false doctrines, or does it establish categories that can be applied? How does 'all nations have drunk' (Rev 14:8) indicate universal reach?
Crux text — the wine of the wrath of her fornication¶
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Context: Second angel's message in the three angels' sequence (Rev 14:6-12). Follows the everlasting gospel proclamation. Announces Babylon's fall as accomplished fact (prophetic aorist).
Notes: The genitive chain: ek tou oinou (Gen Sg M) tou thumou (Gen Sg M) tes porneias (Gen Sg F) autes (Gen Sg F). pepotiken = perfect active indicative 3S of potizo (G4222) — completed action with ongoing results. The doubled epesen epesen is prophetic aorist. Meyer reads the triple genitive as deliberate fusion — Babylon's wine and God's wrath-wine are the same cup from two angles.
The polarity flip — God's wrath-wine answers Babylon's wine¶
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive [his] mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
Context: Third angel's warning. Those who drink Babylon's wine (v.8) will drink God's wine (v.10). Same stacked genitive but terminal genitive shifts from 'her fornication' to 'God/his indignation'.
Notes: Rev 14:10 genitive chain: ek tou oinou (GSM) tou thumou (GSM) tou theou (GSM) — same wine, same thumos, but source shifts from Babylon to God. akratou (Gen Sg M, G194, hapax) = unmixed/undiluted, modifying the implied wine. kekerasmenou (Perf Pass Ptcp GSM, G2767) = having been mixed/prepared. Paradox: the cup is both prepared (kekerasmenou) and undiluted (akratou). poterion (DSN, G4221) = cup. orges (GSF, G3709) = settled judicial wrath. autou (GSM) = his — male pronoun points to God.
The cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath — polarity flip completed¶
And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
Context: Seventh bowl judgment. Babylon 'came in remembrance before God.' The genitive chain: poterion tou oinou tou thumou tes orges autou — same structure as 14:8 but terminal genitive is 'tes orges autou' (of HIS wrath) instead of 'tes porneias autes' (of HER fornication). This IS the polarity flip.
Notes: Polarity flip comparison: Rev 14:8 = ek tou oinou tou thumou tes porneias autes (wine→thumos→HER fornication). Rev 16:19 = tou oinou tou thumou tes orges autou (wine→thumos→HIS orge). Same oinou, same thumou, different terminal genitive. The cup Babylon served is now served to Babylon.
Universal reach confirmed — all nations, kings, merchants¶
For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
Context: Angelic announcement of Babylon's fall. Three participants: panta ta ethne (all nations — drank), basileis tes ges (kings — fornicated), emporoi tes ges (merchants — enriched). Same genitive chain as 14:8 but verb is pepōkan (Perf Act Ind 3P of pinō) — they HAVE drunk and remain intoxicated.
Notes: The threefold participation: (1) nations drink, (2) kings fornicate, (3) merchants profit. strenous (G4764, Gen Sg N) = wantonness/luxury. The economic dimension appears here that is absent from 14:8.
Lex talionis by cup — kerannymi reversal¶
Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
Context: The divine command to repay Babylon. The cup she filled for others is now filled for her — double. This closes the transfer cycle established in Jer 51:7.
Notes: kerannymi (G2767) appears twice: 'she hath filled' (ekerasan) and 'fill to her double' (kerasate). The lex talionis uses the same cup, same verb, same action — reversed.
The harlot with the golden cup — bdelygmata and akatharta¶
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead [was] a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
Context: Vision of the great harlot. The cup's contents are specified: bdelygmaton (Gen Pl N, G946) kai ta akatharta (Acc Pl N, G169) tes porneias autes (Gen Sg F). Alford's observation confirmed: bdelygmaton is genitive (abstract categories), akatharta is accusative (concrete impurities).
Notes: CRITICAL GRAMMATICAL FINDING: gemon (Pres Act Ptcp Acc Sg N, from gemo G1073) governs bdelygmaton in the GENITIVE ('full of abominations') and then kai shifts to ta akatharta in the ACCUSATIVE ('and the unclean things of her fornication'). This case shift from genitive to accusative distinguishes the abstract category (bdelygma = abomination-types) from the concrete instances (akatharta = the specific unclean things). Alford's reading is grammatically verified.
Pharmakeia — the mechanism of Babylon's global deception¶
And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Context: Climax of Babylon's judgment. Two 'for' (hoti) clauses: (1) merchants were megistanes (great ones) of the earth, (2) en te pharmakeia (Dat Sg F, G5331) sou — by/in your sorcery — epelanethesan (Aor Pass Ind 3P, G4105 planao) panta ta ethne — all nations were deceived/led astray.
Notes: pharmakeia is DATIVE SINGULAR (instrumental dative) — the means by which deception occurs. planao (G4105) = to lead astray, cause to wander. The LXX of Isa 47:9 uses pharmakeia for Babylon's sorceries — making Rev 18:23 a direct OT allusion to historical Babylon.
Come out of her, my people — the remnant call¶
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
Context: God's own people are inside Babylon and need to be called out. This implies the wine has reached even the professed people of God.
Notes: ho laos mou = 'my people' — possessive. exelthate = aorist active imperative — decisive exit. Two purpose clauses with hina me: 'that ye not share (synkoinonesete) her sins, and that ye not receive her plagues.' The double purpose clause echoes the 'come out' call in Jer 51:45.
Categorical taxonomy of impenitent sins¶
And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
Context: After the sixth trumpet. Six-category taxonomy of what they refused to repent of: (1) demon-worship, (2) idolatry, (3) murders, (4) sorceries (pharmakion, Gen Pl F, G5331), (5) fornication (porneias, Gen Sg F, G4202), (6) thefts. This is the closest Revelation comes to an explicit list.
Notes: The list moves from cultic sins (demon-worship, idolatry) to social sins (murders, sorceries, fornication, thefts). pharmakion is genitive plural here (not dative as in 18:23). These categories overlap with Babylon's cup contents.
Direct OT source — Babylon as golden cup in the LORD's hand¶
Babylon [hath been] a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
Context: Jeremiah's oracle against Babylon. Critical: Babylon was 'in the LORD's hand' — God used Babylon as His instrument of judgment. But Babylon then 'made all the earth drunken' — agency shifts from God to Babylon.
Notes: Hebrew parsing: kowc-zahab (cup-gold, construct) babel (Babylon) beyad-YHWH (in-hand-of-YHWH). meshakkeret (Piel Ptcp fs of shakar H7937) = making drunk (causative). miyeynah (from-her-wine, yayin H3196 + 3fs suffix). shathu (Qal Perf 3p of shathah H8354) = they drank. yitholelu (Hithpael Impf 3mp of halal) = they went mad/were infatuated. The agency shift: Jer 51:7 says Babylon was in GOD's hand; Rev 14:8 says Babylon made nations drink. Same cup, agency transferred.
Cup-of-wrath trajectory — cup in the LORD's hand, full of mixture¶
For in the hand of the LORD [there is] a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring [them] out, [and] drink [them].
Context: Psalm of Asaph. God as judge (v.7) holds a cup of judgment. The wine is 'full of mixture' (male mesek, H4538). The dregs are reserved for the wicked.
Notes: Hebrew: kowc (H3563) beyad-YHWH. yayin (H3196) chamar (Qal Perf 3ms, H2560 'to be red/ferment'). male (full) mesek (H4538, mixture — mixed wine). shemareyha (dregs + 3fs suffix). yimtsu (drain) yishttu (drink) kol rish'ey-arets (all wicked of earth). The mesek (mixture) is significant: ordinary wine was mixed with spices to increase potency. God's judgment wine is fully prepared, fully potent.
Cup trajectory — transferable judicial object¶
Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, [and] wrung [them] out. ... Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God [that] pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, [even] the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee;
Context: Jerusalem has drunk the cup of God's fury. Then God takes it FROM her hand and gives it TO her tormentors. The cup is a transferable judicial object — it can be passed from one party to another.
Notes: Key vocabulary: kowc (cup) + chemah (H2534, fury). kowc hattarela (cup of trembling/staggering). The transfer: God took it from Jerusalem's hand → gave it to her afflicters. This establishes the template for the polarity flip in Revelation.
Cup-of-wrath trajectory — all nations commanded to drink¶
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
Context: God commands Jeremiah to make all nations drink His cup of fury. This is the prophetic precedent for Rev 14:8's 'all nations have drunk.'
Notes: kowc hayyayin hahemah (cup of the wine of the fury) — three-term construct chain matching Revelation's genitive chain. All nations — universal scope. They become 'mad' (hithholelu) — same verb as Jer 51:7.
Oholibah drinks her sister's cup — judgment on spiritual harlotry¶
Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. Thou shalt even drink it and suck [it] out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken [it], saith the Lord GOD.
Context: Ezekiel's allegory of Oholah (Samaria) and Oholibah (Jerusalem). The cup that judged the northern kingdom is passed to the southern kingdom — the same cup serves the same purpose on a different recipient.
Notes: The cup as transferable vessel of judgment: Samaria's cup → Jerusalem's hand. 'Filled with drunkenness and sorrow' — intoxication as the experience of judgment. Connects to Isa 51:17-22's transferable cup.
Abomination-defilement-cherem escalation chain¶
The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold [that is] on them, nor take [it] unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it [is] an abomination to the LORD thy God. Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: [but] thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it [is] a cursed thing.
Context: Deuteronomic prohibition. Bringing towebah (abomination) into one's house makes the person cherem (devoted to destruction). This is the escalation: abomination → defilement → cherem.
Notes: towebah (H8441) used twice. cherem (H2764, devoted to destruction) used twice. The escalation: contact with the abomination contaminates the person into the same status as the abomination itself. This connects to Rev 18:4 — 'come out, lest ye share in her sins.'
Comprehensive list of towebah practices — sorcery taxonomy¶
When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Context: The most comprehensive prohibition list in the Torah. Eight categories of forbidden practice, all called towebah. These map directly to the sorcery/pharmakeia category in Revelation.
Notes: Eight prohibited practices: (1) child sacrifice, (2) divination (qesem), (3) observer of times (me'onen), (4) enchanter (menachesh), (5) witch (mekasheph, from kashaph H3784), (6) charmer (chover chever), (7) consulter of familiar spirits (sho'el ov), (8) necromancer (doresh el-hammethim). All called towebah. The necromancy prohibition (v.11) directly connects to the soul-immortality doctrine — if the dead are dead, necromancy is impossible.
Seven things the LORD hates — all called towebah¶
These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Context: Wisdom literature's towebah taxonomy. Remarkably broad — covers pride, lying, violence, scheming, eagerness for evil, false witness, discord. None of these are cultic; all are character/ethical violations.
Notes: All seven called towebah (H8441). This demonstrates that 'abomination' in the biblical vocabulary is NOT limited to idolatry — it includes moral and relational sins. When bdelygma inherits the full towebah range, it covers far more than cultus.
Four escalating abominations in the temple¶
Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry. ... So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about. ... Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD'S house which [was] toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. ... And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD'S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, [were] about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.
Context: Ezekiel's temple vision. Four escalating stages of abomination within God's own house: (1) image of jealousy at the gate (8:3-6), (2) animal/creature worship on the walls (8:10-12), (3) women weeping for Tammuz (8:14-15), (4) sun worship between porch and altar (8:16). Each stage introduced by 'greater abominations than these.'
Notes: Stage 1: semel haqqin'ah (image of jealousy) — idol provocation. Stage 2: sheqets (H8263, detestable creature) images on walls — animal/nature worship (Egyptian type). Stage 3: Tammuz — dying-and-rising deity cult (Mesopotamian mystery religion). Stage 4: sun worship — backs to the temple, faces east. These four map to categories filling Babylon's cup: (1) image idolatry, (2) nature worship, (3) mystery religion, (4) astral/solar worship.
Intoxication mechanism — wine destroys capacity for receiving truth¶
But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble [in] judgment. For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean]. Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? [them that are] weaned from the milk, [and] drawn from the breasts.
Context: Isaiah's indictment of the religious leadership of Ephraim. Priest and prophet err through wine — the intoxication destroys their ability to receive and transmit truth.
Notes: Hebrew: shagu bayyayin (erred in-the-wine, shagah H7686). ta'u bashshekar (wandered in-the-strong-drink, ta'ah H8582). nibla'u min-hayyayin (swallowed from-the-wine, bala' H1104 Niphal). shagu baro'eh (erred in-the-vision). paqu peliliyah (tottered in-judgment). Three verbs of error (shagah, ta'ah, bala') — wine produces progressive cognitive failure: error → wandering → being swallowed.
Wine takes the heart — the laqach/leqach connection¶
Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
Context: Hosea's indictment of Israel. Three subjects: zanuwth (fornication), yayin (wine), tirosh (new wine). One verb: yiqqach (Qal Impf 3ms of laqach H3947, 'to take'). Wine and fornication together 'take' the heart.
Notes: CRITICAL ROOT CONNECTION: laqach (H3947) = to take. leqach (H3948, doctrine) = 'that which is taken in.' Same root. Wine 'takes' the heart (Hos 4:11); doctrine IS 'what is taken in' (leqach). The etymological link makes wine the natural symbol for doctrine — both are substances that enter and transform.
Wine-filling vs. Spirit-filling — identical grammar, opposite source¶
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Context: Paul's contrast. methyskesthe (Pres Pass Impv 2P, G3182) = 'be not being made drunk' with oino (Dat Sg M). plērousthe (Pres Pass Impv 2P, G4137) = 'be being filled' en Pneumati (Dat Sg N). IDENTICAL grammatical construction: present passive imperative 2nd plural.
Notes: Both verbs are present passive imperative — commands about what you are being filled with. Something WILL fill you; the source determines the outcome. This is the NT parallel to the two-cups framework in 1 Cor 10:16-21.
Historical narrative of Babylon's wine mechanism¶
Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which [was] in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein. Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which [was] at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
Context: Historical Babylon enacts the wine mechanism in one night: wine enters → judgment impaired → holy vessels treated as common → false gods worshipped → divine judgment falls. The sequence parallels the metaphorical process in Revelation.
Notes: Five-step mechanism: (1) wine enters (v.1-2a), (2) judgment impaired (v.2b — he commands while tasting wine), (3) sacred desecrated (v.3 — holy vessels used for pagan banquet), (4) false worship (v.4 — praised gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood, stone), (5) divine judgment (v.5-6 — handwriting on the wall). This is the intoxication-to-idolatry-to-judgment sequence in historical form.
Ananepho — sobering up from doctrinal captivity¶
In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And [that] they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
Context: Paul on correcting opponents. 'recover themselves' is ananepsōsin (Aor Act Subj 3P, G366) — literally 'sober up again.' If the way out is sobering up, the way in was intoxication.
Notes: G366 ananepho — 1 occurrence in NT. Prefix ana- (again) + nepho (to be sober) = to sober up again/return to sobriety. The word implies a prior state of sobriety that was lost through intoxication. The remedy for doctrinal captivity is described in intoxication vocabulary.
Babylon's sorceries — LXX pharmakeia background for Rev 18:23¶
But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments. For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me. ... Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these things] that shall come upon thee.
Context: Isaiah's oracle against Babylon. The LXX uses pharmakeia/pharmakos vocabulary here — making Rev 18:23 a direct allusion. Bredenhof confirmed this connection.
Notes: KJV 'sorceries' = keshaphim (H3785, from kashaph H3784). 'Enchantments' = chabarim (H2267). 'Astrologers' = hovrey shamayim. The LXX renders keshaphim as pharmakeia — establishing the direct vocabulary link from Isa 47 to Rev 18:23. The self-deification speech 'I am, and none else beside me' (v.10) is echoed in Rev 18:7.
Sorcery + fornication as mechanism of national deception¶
Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.
Context: Nahum's oracle against Nineveh. Combines sorcery (kesheph H3785) and fornication (zanah/zenuwnim H2183) as a mechanism of deceiving nations. Not a covenant-people context — applied to pagan Nineveh.
Notes: Two mechanisms: whoredoms (zenuwney) and witchcrafts (keshapheyha). 'Selleth nations' (mokheret goyim) — the language of trafficking nations through these means. This passage is one of the two possible exceptions to Walvoord's rule that fornication language applies only to covenant people.
Pharmakeia in the works of the flesh — adjacency to idolatry¶
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Context: Paul's works-of-the-flesh catalog. pharmakeia (Nom Sg F, G5331) listed IMMEDIATELY after eidololatreia (Nom Sg F, G1495, idolatry). The adjacency is theologically significant — sorcery serves idolatry.
Notes: The list structure: sexual sins (moicheia, porneia, akatharsia, aselgeia) → cultic sins (eidololatreia, pharmakeia) → social sins (echthra, eris, zelos, thumoi, eritheiai, dichostasiai, haireseis) → indulgence (phthonoi, phonoi, methai, komoi). pharmakeia bridges the cultic and social categories.
Two cups — mutual exclusion of Lord's cup and demons' cup¶
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we [being] many are one bread, [and] one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But [I say], that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
Context: Paul's exposition of the two-table, two-cup framework. poterion Kyriou (cup of Lord, Acc Sg N) vs. poterion daimoniōn (cup of demons, Acc Sg N). ou dynasthe (you cannot) — absolute mutual exclusion. Whatever cup you drink creates communion (koinōnia) with its source.
Notes: koinonia (G2842) tou haimatos tou Christou (v.16) — communion/participation in Christ's blood through the cup. This is NOT just information transfer — it is participatory communion. Babylon's cup likewise creates participatory union with the system, not just intellectual agreement. This explains why the remedy is 'come OUT' (Rev 18:4) — not just 'change your theology' but 'leave the table.'
Thumos chain — great winepress of the wrath of God¶
And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast [it] into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
Context: Harvest imagery. The winepress = tou thumou (Gen Sg M, G2372) tou theou (Gen Sg M, G2316). Thumos chain continues from 14:8 → 14:10 → 14:19.
Notes: Part of the thumos chain running through Revelation: 14:8 (Babylon's thumos) → 14:10 (God's thumos) → 14:19 (winepress of God's thumos) → 15:1 → 15:7 → 16:1 → 16:19 → 19:15.
Seven plagues fill up God's thumos — bowls full of wrath¶
And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. ... And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.
Context: Seven last plagues introduced. thumos (G2372) used in both verses — the plagues 'fill up' God's thumos (15:1), and the vials are 'full of' God's thumos (15:7).
Notes: 15:1: etelesthē ho thumos tou theou — the thumos of God is brought to completion (teleo) in these plagues. 15:7: phialas chrysas gemousas tou thumou tou theou — golden bowls full of God's thumos. The thumos that was Babylon's wine (14:8) is now God's plague-bowls.
Pour out the vials of God's thumos¶
And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
Context: Command to pour the bowls. ekcheate tas phialas tou thumou tou theou — pour out the bowls of God's thumos. The pouring language echoes both wine-pouring and judgment-pouring.
Notes: Thumos chain continues. The seven bowls are the execution of the wrath announced in 14:10.
Thumos + orge combined — terminal wrath expression¶
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Context: Christ's return. The winepress: ten lenon tou oinou (Acc Sg F + Gen Sg M) tou thumou (Gen Sg M) tes orges (Gen Sg F) tou theou (Gen Sg M) tou pantokratoros (Gen Sg M). Five stacked genitives — the longest genitive chain in Revelation. thumos + orge combined = maximal wrath expression.
Notes: The terminal point of the thumos chain: 14:8 (thumos alone, Babylon's) → 14:10 (thumos + orge, God's) → 16:19 (thumos + orge, God's) → 19:15 (thumos + orge + pantokrator, God's). The wrath intensifies as it progresses through Revelation.
The remnant described — those who keep commandments and faith¶
Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Context: Immediately follows the three angels' messages. Describes those who have NOT drunk Babylon's wine — they keep the commandments of God AND the faith of Jesus.
Notes: The remnant is defined by two markers: (1) tas entolas tou theou (commandments of God), (2) ten pistin Iesou (faith of Jesus). These are the antithesis of Babylon's wine — faithfulness rather than fornication.
Cognitive impairment from idolatry — deceived heart¶
He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, [Is there] not a lie in my right hand?
Context: Isaiah's mockery of idol-makers. The idolater's heart is 'deceived' (huttal, Hophal of talal H2048) — turned aside. He CANNOT recognize the lie. This is cognitive impairment from spiritual cause.
Notes: The cognitive dimension of idolatry: not just wrong belief but impaired capacity to perceive truth. 'He cannot deliver his soul' — the deception is self-imprisoning. Connects to the pharmakeia/intoxication theme.
The bdelygmata/akatharta distinction — abstract vs. concrete (supporting)¶
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
Context: The harlot's description. This verse is the specific locus of the bdelygmata (genitive) / akatharta (accusative) case shift that Alford identified. Already covered in the Rev 17:1-6 passage entry but listed separately as a supporting reference for focus area 3.
Notes: Supporting verse. See Rev 17:1-6 entry for full analysis. bdelygmaton [N-GPN] Gen Pl N vs. ta akatharta [A-APN] Acc Pl N — case shift confirmed by parser.
Four escalating abominations — supporting detail (supporting)¶
Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry. He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? [even] the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, [and] thou shalt see greater abominations. And he brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold a hole in the wall. Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door. And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about. And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up. Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth. He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, [and] thou shalt see greater abominations that they do. Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD'S house which [was] toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen [this], O son of man? turn thee yet again, [and] thou shalt see greater abominations than these. And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD'S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, [were] about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.
Context: Supporting verse for focus area 4 (Ezekiel 8 abomination escalation). Full text of the four stages. Already addressed in Ezek 8:5-18 primary entry but this range is the specific escalation sequence.
Notes: Supporting. See Ezek 8:5-18 primary entry for full analysis of the four escalating stages.
The merchandise list — economic dimension of Babylon's wine (supporting)¶
And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
Context: Three groups lament Babylon's fall: kings (v.9-10), merchants (v.11-16), shipmasters (v.17-19). The merchandise list climaxes in 'bodies and souls of men' — anti-Jubilee trafficking. Wine appears in the commodity list (v.13).
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 9 (does Revelation identify specific doctrines or categories). The economic dimension — merchants waxed rich — shows Babylon's corruption spans religious, political, and economic domains.
Blood of prophets and saints found in her (supporting)¶
And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
Context: Final indictment of Babylon. Persecution as a marker of Babylon, linked to the cup (cf. 17:6 'drunken with the blood of the saints').
Notes: Supporting. Persecution is not a 'doctrine' but a consequence of Babylon's system — those who refuse the wine are killed.
The waters — peoples, multitudes, nations, tongues (supporting)¶
And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
Context: Angel interprets the waters. The harlot's seat is universal — peoples, multitudes, nations, tongues. Reinforces the 'all nations have drunk' universal reach of Rev 14:8.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 10 (universal reach). The fourfold formula (peoples, multitudes, nations, tongues) appears repeatedly in Revelation (5:9; 7:9; 10:11; 13:7; 14:6).
Kings fornicated, inhabitants made drunk (supporting)¶
With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
Context: Two groups: kings commit fornication (active participants), inhabitants are made drunk (passive recipients). The wine operates on the general population through the kings' political alliance.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus areas 7 (porneia) and 10 (universal reach). emethysthesan (Aor Pass Ind 3P, G3182 methysko) — the inhabitants WERE MADE drunk (passive — Babylon is the agent).
Nations defiled by towebah — the land vomits (supporting)¶
Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit [any] of these abominations; [neither] any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you: (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which [were] before you, and the land is defiled;) That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that [were] before you. For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit [them] shall be cut off from among their people. Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that [ye] commit not [any one] of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I [am] the LORD your God.
Context: Conclusion of the Holiness Code sexual prohibitions. The nations were expelled for these towebah practices; Israel will be expelled likewise if they repeat them. towebah produces defilement, defilement produces expulsion.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 3 (bdelygma/towebah chain). The land-vomiting imagery shows towebah has cosmic consequences — it affects not just persons but the land itself.
Vine of Sodom — wine as spiritual poison (supporting)¶
For their vine [is] of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes [are] grapes of gall, their clusters [are] bitter: Their wine [is] the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.
Context: Moses' Song. The enemies' vine produces poisonous wine — 'poison of dragons and cruel venom of asps.' Wine as spiritual poison, not merely intoxicant.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 6 (intoxication mechanism). The wine-as-poison imagery adds the lethal dimension — Babylon's wine doesn't just impair, it kills. chemah (H2534, fury/venom) appears here as 'poison' — same word used for God's fury in the cup-of-wrath texts.
Woe to him who makes his neighbor drink — the cup turns (supporting)¶
Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to [him], and makest [him] drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing [shall be] on thy glory.
Context: Habakkuk's woe oracle. The one who makes others drunk will himself be made to drink — 'the cup of the LORD's right hand shall be turned unto thee.' Direct precursor to the polarity flip.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 2 (cup-of-wrath trajectory). The reversal pattern: you made others drink → the cup turns to you. Same structure as Rev 18:6.
The glory exchange — antiparallel of Rev 14:7 (supporting)¶
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Context: Paul's description of humanity's downward spiral. 'Changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image' — the exact antiparallel of Rev 14:7's 'give glory to him.' The exchange of glory is the foundational idolatry.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 3 (bdelygma/towebah). The glory-exchange pattern: they had knowledge of God → refused to glorify → darkened hearts → exchanged glory for images. Progressive cognitive degradation from idolatry — parallel to intoxication mechanism.
Strong delusion sent on those who reject truth (supporting)¶
[Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Context: Paul on the mystery of lawlessness. Those who reject truth receive 'strong delusion' (energeian planes) from God — judicial hardening. The delusion comes BECAUSE they refused truth, not before.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 5 (pharmakeia). The sequence: reject truth → God sends delusion → believe the lie. This matches the intoxication pattern: refuse sobriety → receive more wine → lose capacity for truth.
Serpent beguiled Eve — minds corrupted from simplicity (supporting)¶
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or [if] ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with [him].
Context: Paul warns the Corinthians about deception. The serpent-Eve allusion frames false teaching as subtle corruption of the mind — 'another Jesus, another spirit, another gospel.' Deception works by mixture with truth.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 6 (intoxication mechanism). The corruption operates on 'your minds' (ta noemata hymon) — cognitive target. 'Simplicity' (haplotetos) corrupted by 'subtilty' (panourgia) — truth mixed with error, the Babylon mechanism.
Deception by miracles — the beast's method (supporting)¶
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Context: The second beast (earth beast) deceives earth-dwellers through miracles. The deception mechanism links to pharmakeia — signs and wonders as instruments of deception.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 5 (pharmakeia). planao (G4105, same verb as Rev 18:23) — 'deceiveth.' The beast deceives through miracles; Babylon deceives through pharmakeia. Both use planao for the same effect.
Every bottle filled with wine — metaphorical drunkenness as judgment (supporting)¶
Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine? Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.
Context: Jeremiah's sign-act with wine jars. The literal proverb ('every jar filled with wine') is reinterpreted as judgment: God will fill ALL inhabitants — kings, priests, prophets, people — with drunkenness.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 6 (intoxication mechanism). Universal scope: kings, priests, prophets, all inhabitants. The judgment is drunkenness itself — loss of capacity. Note that priests and prophets are included, matching Isa 28:7.
Wine of astonishment — God administers judgment wine (supporting)¶
Thou hast shewed thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.
Context: David's psalm after military defeat. God Himself causes His people to drink 'the wine of astonishment' (yayin tarela) — the same staggering/trembling wine as Isa 51:17.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 2 (cup-of-wrath trajectory). yayin tarela — wine of staggering/reeling. God is the one who 'made us drink' — divine agency in the judgment-cup tradition.
Prophet staggers because of false prophets' effect (supporting)¶
Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
Context: Jeremiah's lament over false prophets. He staggers 'like a drunken man' — not from literal wine but from the impact of the false prophets' corruption. The drunkenness metaphor applied to the effect of false teaching on a faithful prophet.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 6 (intoxication mechanism). The intoxication metaphor used to describe the EFFECT of false teaching on the community — even the faithful prophet is affected by the pervasive corruption.
Perverse spirit mingled — drunken staggering as confusion (supporting)¶
The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken [man] staggereth in his vomit.
Context: Oracle against Egypt. God mingles a 'perverse spirit' (ruach iv'im) in Egypt's midst — causing them to stagger like a drunk. Drunkenness as metaphor for national confusion and misdirection.
Notes: Supporting verse for focus area 6 (intoxication mechanism). masak (H4537, to mix/mingle) — same root as mesek (H4538, mixture) in Psa 75:8. God MINGLES the spirit of confusion, just as wine is MIXED. The mixing vocabulary connects the intoxication and judgment themes.
