Question

What is the charagma (mark, G5480) and what is the sphragis (seal, G4973)? How do they relate to the Deuteronomy 6:6-8 / Exodus 13:9 hand-and-forehead loyalty pattern? How does the Ezekiel 9:4 tav (mark on the forehead of those who sigh and cry) prefigure the seal of God? What is the relationship between God's seal and the Sabbath — does Exodus 31:13,17 and Ezekiel 20:12,20 establish the Sabbath as the seal's content? How does a seal function — identifying who seals (God's name), what authority they have (Creator), and over what domain (heaven and earth) — and which commandment contains all three elements? How does the Spirit-seal connection (Eph 1:13, 4:30) relate to the Sabbath-seal claim? What is the composite argument for the seal being connected to Sabbath observance?

Angel with seal of the living God — sealing on foreheads of servants

And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

Context: Between the sixth and seventh seals. Four angels hold back the four winds of destruction. A fifth angel ascends from the east with the seal of the living God (sphragida theou zontos) and commands the delay of judgment until God's servants are sealed on their foreheads. This is the direct NT counterpart to Ezekiel 9:4.

Notes: Key terms: sphragis (G4973, seal) + sphragizo (G4972, to seal) + metopon (G3359, forehead). The seal is described as belonging to 'the living God' (theou zontos). Sealing is exclusively on foreheads — no hand option. The angel ascends from the east (sunrise direction), possibly contrasting with the sun worship of Ezek 8:16.

Those with seal of God protected from locust-plague

And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

Context: Fifth trumpet. Locust-plague torments those without the seal of God on their foreheads. The seal functions as divine protection — those sealed are exempted from the plague.

Notes: Protective function of the seal confirmed. Again, foreheads only. Parallels the protective function of the tav in Ezek 9:4-6 — both marks exempt from destruction.

Beast mark on right hand OR forehead — economic coercion

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Context: The earth beast (second beast) exercises authority of the first beast and causes all to receive a mark (charagma, G5480) on right hand or forehead. Economic participation requires the mark, name, or number.

  • τῆς (G5495) — N-GSF — Gen Sg F
  • τῆς (G1188) — A-GSF — Gen Sg F
  • τὸ (G3359) — N-ASN — Acc Sg N

Notes: Critical contrast: beast accepts hand OR forehead (e disjunction). God seals forehead ONLY. The poiei + hina construction (v.12 proskyneo + v.16 charagma) binds worship and mark as twin coercive outcomes. The mark is on the RIGHT hand specifically (tes cheiros auton tes dexias — genitive). Three-part identification: mark OR name OR number.

144,000 with Father's name on foreheads

And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.

Context: Following the beast-mark passage of Rev 13. The 144,000 stand with the Lamb on Mount Zion. They have the Father's name (onoma) written on their foreheads — the content of God's seal is his NAME.

Notes: The Father's name (to onoma tou patros autou) is the content of the seal on the foreheads. This identifies what sphragis theou zontos (Rev 7:2) actually signifies — the name of God. The question then becomes: which commandment contains God's full name with identifying title and domain?

Third angel warning against receiving mark — 'no rest' irony

And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Context: Third angel's message. Worship of the beast and reception of the mark are paired (proskyneo + charagma). Those who receive the mark 'have no rest (anapausis) day nor night.'

Notes: The 'no rest' (ouk echousin anapausin) vocabulary creates a deliberate irony with Heb 4:9 sabbatismos. Those who reject God's rest-sign receive no rest. The mark is received in forehead OR hand (epi tou metopou autou e epi ten cheira autou) — again the compliance option. Worship and mark-reception are paired with conditional ei tis (if anyone).

Commandment-keepers identified as the sealed

Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Context: Immediately following the third angel's warning. The saints are identified by two marks: keeping God's commandments (tas entolas tou theou) and having the faith of Jesus (ten pistin Iesou).

Notes: The participle terountes (present active, 'the ones keeping') describes the sealed group's ongoing characteristic. Commandment-keeping (entolas tou theou) + faith of Jesus (pistin Iesou) = the dual identity of the sealed. This forms part of the inclusio: ark/commandments (11:19), commandment-keepers (12:17), creation formula (14:7), commandment-keepers (14:12).

Those who refused mark on forehead or hand — final vindication

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Context: Millennial judgment scene. Those who refused the mark reign with Christ. The mark is again described as on foreheads or hands.

Notes: Final vindication passage. The negation is threefold: (1) not worshipped the beast, (2) nor his image, (3) nor received his mark on foreheads or hands. Refusal of the mark is inseparable from refusal of worship.

His name in their foreheads — eschatological completion of sealing

And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

Context: New Jerusalem. The servants of God see his face and bear his name in their foreheads. The eschatological completion of the sealing begun in Rev 7:3.

Notes: The name (onoma) on foreheads links back to Rev 14:1 (Father's name) and Rev 7:2-3 (seal of the living God). The seal is God's name. Forehead ONLY — no hand option for God's seal, ever.

Sabbath as sign (owth) between God and Israel — sanctification formula

Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Context: Immediately after the tabernacle construction instructions. God commands Moses to tell Israel that the Sabbath is a sign (owth) between God and them. The purpose clause: 'that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.'

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: owth (H226, sign) + beyniy ubeyneykhem (between me and you) + ledorotheykhem (throughout your generations) + ladaat ki ani YHWH meqaddishkhem (to know that I am YHWH who sanctifies you). The Sabbath is explicitly called owth — sign. The sanctification formula (meqaddishkhem, Piel participle of qadash) connects the Sabbath to God's sanctifying identity.

Sabbath as perpetual covenant and sign forever — creation rationale

Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Context: Continuation of the Sabbath-sign passage. The Sabbath is called a perpetual covenant (berit olam) and a sign forever (owth le-olam). Creation rationale: 'in six days the LORD made heaven and earth.'

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: berit olam (perpetual covenant) in v.16 + owth hi le-olam (sign she/it forever) in v.17. The creation rationale uses asah (make, H6213) YHWH + shamayim (heavens) + erets (earth) — the same vocabulary echoed in Rev 14:7 (poieo + ouranos + ge). The Sabbath's sign-status is explicitly tied to creation identity.

Sabbath as sign — 'that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them'

Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.

Context: God recounts Israel's history. He 'gave them my sabbaths' as a sign (owth) between himself and Israel, with the purpose: 'that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.'

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: shabbtothay (my sabbaths) + nathatti (I gave) + lihyoth le-owth (to be for a sign) + beyniy ubeynowtham (between me and them) + ladaat ki ani YHWH meqaddisham (to know that I am YHWH who sanctifies them). Nearly identical to Exo 31:13 — same owth + beyn + sanctification formula. Third of four explicit owth designations for the Sabbath.

Sabbath as sign — 'that ye may know that I am the LORD your God'

And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God.

Context: God instructs the next generation. Sabbath hallowing produces the sign-function: knowing that 'I am the LORD your God.'

Notes: Fourth explicit owth designation for the Sabbath. Same formula as Exo 31:13, Exo 31:17, Ezek 20:12. No other commandment of the Decalogue receives this fourfold sign-designation.

Heart FIRST, then hand and forehead — the OT loyalty-sign pattern

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Context: Following the Shema (Deut 6:4-5). The commands are first internalized in the heart (v.6), then externalized as a sign on the hand (owth al yadekha) and frontlets between the eyes (totaphoth beyn eynekha).

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: owth (H226, sign) + al yadekha (upon your hand) + totaphoth (H2903, frontlets) + beyn eynekha (between your eyes = forehead). CRITICAL: the sequence is heart FIRST (v.6), then hand and forehead (v.8). God requires internalization before externalization. Revelation inverts this for the beast: the beast accepts hand OR forehead compliance without requiring heart conviction.

Passover as sign on hand and memorial between eyes — earliest hand-forehead pattern

And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD's law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.

Context: Instructions regarding the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The observance is a sign (owth) on the hand and a memorial (zikkaron) between the eyes.

Notes: Earliest hand-forehead pattern in Scripture. owth (sign) + al yadkha (upon your hand) + zikkaron (memorial) + beyn eynekha (between your eyes). This establishes the loyalty-pattern that Deut 6:8, Deut 11:18, and Exo 13:16 all repeat. Revelation's forehead-and-hand imagery draws from this OT template.

Firstborn redemption as sign on hand and frontlets between eyes

And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

Context: Firstborn redemption instructions. Same hand-forehead pattern as Exo 13:9.

Notes: owth (token/sign) + al yadkha (upon your hand) + totaphoth (frontlets) + beyn eynekha (between your eyes). Parallel to Exo 13:9 and Deut 6:8.

Words as sign on hand and frontlets between eyes — repeats loyalty pattern

Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.

Context: Moses' second discourse. Heart first ('in your heart and in your soul'), then hand and forehead binding.

Notes: Same pattern: heart internalization first, then external sign. owth (sign) + al yedkhem (upon your hand) + totaphoth (frontlets) + beyn eyneykhem (between your eyes).

Sun worship at the temple — greatest abomination before the tav marking

And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD's house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

Context: Ezekiel's vision of abominations in the temple. Four escalating abominations are shown (Ezek 8:5-16). This is the FOURTH and greatest — sun worship in the inner court of the temple, with backs toward God's temple and faces toward the east.

Notes: Sun worship is presented as THE climactic abomination, immediately preceding the tav marking in chapter 9. The 25 men turn their backs on God's temple (mishtachawithim qedmah la-shemesh — worshipping eastward to the sun). This sun-worship vs. tav-marking contrast is the OT prefiguration of the mark/seal binary.

Tav mark on foreheads of those who sigh and cry — OT template for Rev 7 sealing

And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.

Context: Immediately following the four abominations (especially sun worship in 8:16). God commands the marking of the faithful before judgment falls.

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: hitavita (Hiphil perfect 2ms of tavah H8427, 'mark out') + tav (H8420, the letter-name used as a mark) + al mitschoth (upon foreheads, H4696 metsach) + ha-anashim (the men) + ha-ne'enachim (Niphal participle of anach H584, 'sigh/groan') + veha-ne'enaqim (Niphal participle of anaq H602, 'groan/cry out'). Five structural links to Rev 7: (1) marking on foreheads, (2) judgment on unmarked, (3) begins at sanctuary, (4) universal scope, (5) marking precedes destruction. The moral criterion is heart-orientation (sighing and crying over abominations), not mere ritual compliance.

Sealed with Holy Spirit of promise — Spirit-seal text

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Context: Paul's doxological opening of Ephesians. After hearing and believing, believers were sealed (esphragisthete, aorist passive) with (to pneumati to hagio, dative) the Holy Spirit of promise.

Notes: CRITICAL GRAMMATICAL QUESTION: esphragisthete (V-API-2P, aorist passive indicative 2nd person plural of sphragizo) + to Pneumati (T-DSN + N-DSN, dative singular neuter) + tes epangelias (T-GSF + N-GSF, genitive of description) + to Hagio (T-DSN + A-DSN, dative agreeing with Pneumati). The dative to Pneumati to Hagio can be read as: (a) INSTRUMENTAL dative — 'sealed BY/WITH the Spirit' (Spirit = agent who applies the seal), or (b) CONTENT/APPOSITIONAL dative — 'sealed, namely the Spirit' (Spirit = the seal itself). The sequence akousantes...pisteusantes...esphragisthete (hearing → believing → being sealed) shows sealing follows faith. Verse 14 identifies the Spirit as the arrabon (earnest/down-payment) of the inheritance — a distinct metaphor from sealing, suggesting the Spirit functions as both seal-agent and earnest-payment.

Sealed unto the day of redemption by the Holy Spirit

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Context: Practical exhortation section. Paul warns against grieving the Holy Spirit by whom believers are sealed.

Notes: en ho esphragisthete (in/by whom you were sealed) — the relative pronoun ho (dative neuter singular) refers back to to Pneuma to Hagion tou Theou (the Holy Spirit of God). The preposition en + dative = instrument/means ('by which'). Temporal marker: eis hemeran apolutroseos (unto the day of redemption) — the seal holds until consummation. This supports the Spirit as sealing AGENT rather than the seal itself.

God sealed us and gave the earnest of the Spirit — threefold distinction

Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Context: Paul affirms God's faithfulness. Three actions are attributed to God in vv.21-22: (1) established/stablished us (bebaiōn), (2) anointed us (chrisas), (3) sealed us (sphragisamenos) and gave the earnest (arrabon) of the Spirit.

Notes: sphragisamenos (aorist middle participle of sphragizo) + dous (aorist active participle of didomi, 'having given') + ton arrabona tou Pneumatos (the earnest of the Spirit). The kai...kai (both...and) structure distinguishes sealing FROM giving the earnest. The earnest (arrabon) is the Spirit given in our hearts. If sealing and the Spirit-as-earnest are listed as distinct actions, then the seal is not simply the Spirit — the Spirit is the agent/means, and the arrabon is a separate metaphor for the Spirit's guaranteeing function.

Fourth commandment — the only commandment with name, title, and domain

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Context: The fourth commandment in the Decalogue. Contains three seal elements: (1) NAME — 'the LORD thy God' (YHWH Elohekha), (2) TITLE — 'who made' (asah, Creator), (3) DOMAIN — 'heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is.'

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: YHWH (name) + asah (Qal perfect 3ms, 'made' = Creator title) + ha-shamayim (the heavens) + ve-et-ha-arets (and the earth) + et-ha-yam (the sea) + ve-et-kol-asher-bam (and all that in them). The verb asah (H6213) maps to poieo (G4160) in the LXX — the same verb used in Rev 14:7. No other commandment contains all three elements: (1) Commandments 1-3 reference God but don't identify his creative power with universal domain; (2) Commandments 5-10 don't identify the lawgiver at all. The 'LORD thy God' (YHWH Elohekha) appears in commandments 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, but ONLY the fourth adds what YHWH DID (made heaven and earth) and what his jurisdiction COVERS (heaven, earth, sea). Smith's claim that 'the fourth commandment uniquely contains God's name' is imprecise — it uniquely contains name + creative title + universal domain TOGETHER.

First angel — 'worship him that made heaven, earth, sea' echoes fourth commandment

Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Context: First angel's message within the everlasting gospel. The worship command uses creation language matching Exo 20:11 LXX.

  • τὸν (G3772) — N-ASM — heaven
  • τὴν (G1093) — N-ASF — earth

Notes: Greek confirmed: proskynesate (aorist active imperative, 'worship') + to poiesanti (dative aorist active participle of poieo G4160, 'the one who made') + ton ouranon (heaven) + ten gen (earth) + thalassan (sea). Four shared terms with Exo 20:11 LXX: poieo (made), ouranos (heaven), ge (earth), thalassa (sea). DIAGNOSTIC: John used ktizo (G2936) in Rev 4:11 and Rev 10:6 for creation, but switched to poieo in Rev 14:7 — the one verb matching Exo 20:11 LXX where asah maps to poieo. This departure from his own established pattern suggests intentional allusion to the Sabbath commandment.

Circumcision as sign (semeion) AND seal (sphragis) — test case for sign/seal overlap

And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

Context: Paul's argument about Abraham's justification by faith. Abraham received circumcision as both semeion (sign) and sphragis (seal) of his existing faith-righteousness.

Notes: Greek confirmed: semeion (G4592, N-ASN, sign) + elaben (received) + peritomes (of circumcision, genitive) + sphragida (G4973, N-ASF, seal) + tes dikaiosynes (of the righteousness) + tes pisteos (of the faith). Paul uses BOTH semeion AND sphragis for the same thing: circumcision. In Hebrew, circumcision is called owth (Gen 17:11). Therefore: if circumcision as owth = both semeion and sphragis, the strict sign/seal vocabulary separation claimed by Life Assurance Ministries collapses at the FUNCTIONAL level. The translation-level claim (owth is never translated sphragis) may be technically correct, but Paul demonstrates that the same reality can be BOTH sign and seal.

Circumcision as owth (sign) of the covenant

And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

Context: God institutes circumcision as the covenant sign with Abraham. The word for 'token' is owth (H226) — the same word used for the Sabbath in Exo 31:13,17 and Ezek 20:12,20.

Notes: The owth vocabulary is shared between circumcision (Gen 17:11) and Sabbath (Exo 31:13,17; Ezek 20:12,20). Paul takes this circumcision-as-owth and calls it both semeion and sphragis in Rom 4:11. If one owth (circumcision) can function as both sign and seal, the Sabbath as owth potentially carries the same dual function.

Sabbatismos remaining for the people of God — Sabbath rest as ongoing obligation

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Context: Climax of the Heb 3-4 rest argument. The author switches from katapausis (used 8x in Heb 3-4) to sabbatismos (hapax) at the theological climax.

  • τῷ (G2992) — N-DSM — Dat Sg M (for the people)
  • τοῦ (G2316) — N-GSM — Gen Sg M (of God)

Notes: Greek confirmed: apoleipetai (V-PPI-3S, present passive indicative, 'is [currently] remaining/left behind') + sabbatismos (G4520, N-NSM, sabbath-keeping). The present tense of apoleipetai means 'is currently remaining' — not past, not future, but ongoing. sabbatismos is a verbal noun from sabbatizo ('to keep the Sabbath'), not a synonym for katapausis. The author deliberately switched vocabulary at the climax to invoke the Sabbath institution specifically. Gallos (Andrews University): sabbatismos always means literal Sabbath-keeping in extant literature.

'Seal the law among my disciples' — EGW's key proof-text for Sabbath-seal

Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

Context: Isaiah is told to bind up the testimony and seal the law among his disciples. This is used by EGW (GC88 691.3) to connect sealing to the law.

Notes: Hebrew confirmed: tsor (Qal imperative 2ms of tsarar, 'bind/wrap') + teudah (attestation/testimony) + chathom (Qal imperative 2ms of chatham H2856, 'seal') + torah (instruction/law) + be-limmudai (among my disciples). The sealing is of TORAH (the whole instruction/law), not specifically the Sabbath commandment. The immediate context is Isaiah preparing his disciples for a time when God's counsel would be rejected. The Sabbath-seal connection via this verse is indirect — the seal is attached to the law, and the question is which commandment WITHIN the law contains the seal-elements.

Charagma in non-Revelation context — idolatry connection

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

Context: Paul's Areopagus speech. The only non-Revelation use of charagma in the NT. Applied to human-made religious images.

Notes: Charagma here means 'graven thing' — human artistic production attempting to represent the divine. This anchors charagma's semantic range in idolatry/human manufacturing, providing background for its Revelation usage as the beast's imposed mark.

Christ as charakter of God's person — shared root with charagma

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Context: Opening of Hebrews. The Son is described as the charakter (G5481, exact representation) of God's hupostasis (substance/person).

  • τῆς (G5287) — N-GSF — Gen Sg F (of the substance/person)

Notes: Greek confirmed: charakter (G5481, N-NSM, exact representation) + tes hupostaseos (of the substance/person). Charakter shares root charasso with charagma (G5480). Theological antithesis: Christ is the charakter (exact divine imprint) of God; the beast's charagma (imposed brand) is its counterfeit. The seal of God bears the true charakter; the mark of the beast is a false charagma.

God's foundation with this seal: 'The Lord knoweth them that are his'

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Context: Paul encourages Timothy. God's firm foundation bears a double-sided seal inscription: (1) 'The Lord knoweth them that are his' (ownership), (2) 'Let everyone who names Christ's name depart from iniquity' (moral requirement).

Notes: The seal (sphragis) here has two inscriptions — one about God knowing his own (ownership), one about departing from iniquity (holiness). This supports seal = ownership + moral identification.

Laws written in hearts and minds — forehead = mind connection

This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Context: Quoting Jer 31:33. New covenant: God writes his laws in hearts and minds.

Notes: The 'minds' (dianoias) connection supports EGW's interpretation that forehead = mind/intellect. If God writes his law in minds (Heb 10:16) and places his seal/name on foreheads (Rev 7:3, 14:1, 22:4), the forehead symbolizes the mind where God's law is written.

Rainbow as owth of the covenant — owth used for non-Sabbath sign

And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

Context: Noahic covenant. The rainbow is called owth (token/sign) of the covenant. This is relevant because critics note owth is not exclusive to the Sabbath.

Notes: owth is used for the rainbow (Gen 9:12-13), circumcision (Gen 17:11), Passover (Exo 12:13), and the Sabbath (Exo 31:13,17; Ezek 20:12,20). The question is not whether owth is used exclusively for the Sabbath but whether any other COMMANDMENT of the Decalogue is explicitly called owth. The answer is no — the Sabbath is the only Decalogue commandment designated owth.

Earth beast causes worship of first beast

And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

Context: Earth beast coercive worship program binding worship (v.12) and mark (v.16).

Notes: Supporting context for the worship-mark binding.

Ark of the testament seen in temple

And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Context: Seventh trumpet. The ark containing the Ten Commandments is revealed.

Notes: Inclusio bracket with commandment-keepers (12:17, 14:12).

Remnant keep commandments of God

And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Context: Dragon's war against the remnant identified by commandment-keeping.

Notes: Same dual identification as Rev 14:12.

First three commandments - none contain all three seal elements

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Context: First three commandments reference God but lack creation-identification with universal domain.

Notes: Contain 'the LORD thy God' but no creation title or universal domain.

Last six commandments - none contain all three seal elements

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Sabbath commandment with redemption rationale

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

Notes: The Sabbath is 'made known' - it reveals God's character.

Sabbath-keeping by foreigners and eunuchs

Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer.

Notes: Contested: ceremonial sabbaths (annual/monthly/weekly descending pattern) vs weekly Sabbath.

Counter-text on day-esteeming

Context: Paul addresses 'doubtful disputations' about days and food.

Notes: Does not use sabbaton. Addresses personal scruples, not Decalogue commands.

But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments... and my sabbaths they greatly polluted. Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols. Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me... they polluted my sabbaths. Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.
