Word Studies

Question

What is the comprehensive biblical case for the deity of Christ across both Testaments? This is a CAPSTONE SYNTHESIS of 18 prior Trinity studies, responding to Jewish monotheism objections, the tetragrammaton argument, the argument from silence, the Greek philosophy charge, the delegated-authority reading of Isa 9:6, the 'lowercase-g god' framework, and the 'sacred secret' millennial kingdom claim.

G2316 — theos

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2316-theos.md

Occurrences: 1343

The primary word for God in the NT, applied to YHWH, to Christ in seven explicit predications (John 1:1, 20:28, Rom 9:5, Titus 2:13, 2 Pet 1:1, Heb 1:8, 1 John 5:20), and rarely to pagan deities. Article presence/absence does not determine ontology (Satan gets the articular theos in 2 Cor 4:4).

Semantic categories: supreme deity, Christ as theos, functional/delegated usage

Key verses: John 1:1, John 20:28, Rom 9:5, Titus 2:13, Heb 1:8, 1 John 5:20, Col 2:9

Relevance: The seven theos predications across four authors (John, Paul, Peter, Hebrews author) constitute one of the strongest evidence lines for Christ's deity.

G2320 — theotes

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2320-theotes.md

Occurrences: 1

Hapax legomenon in Col 2:9. Denotes essential deity — the very being of God — as distinguished from theiotes (G2305, divine qualities, Rom 1:20). Trench: theiotes = 'divinity' (quality), theotes = 'deity' (substance). Pan to pleroma tes theotetos = all the fullness of deity dwells in Christ bodily.

Semantic categories: essential deity, deity vs. divinity

Key verses: Col 2:9

Relevance: Paul's most direct assertion of Christ's essential deity — not divine qualities but Godhood itself permanently indwelling Christ.

G2305 — theiotes

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2305-theiotes.md

Occurrences: 1

Hapax in Rom 1:20 — divine quality observable in creation. Distinguished from theotes (G2320) which denotes essential being. Paul chose different words for different concepts.

Semantic categories: divine quality, general revelation

Key verses: Rom 1:20

Relevance: The theotes/theiotes distinction shows Paul deliberately chose the stronger term (essential deity) for Christ in Col 2:9.

G4352 — proskyneo

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4352-proskyneo.md

Occurrences: 65

Worship — prostration before deity. The worship binary operates with zero exceptions: every righteous creature refuses (Peter Acts 10:26, Paul Acts 14:15, angels Rev 19:10, 22:8-9); Christ accepts in every instance; the Father commands it (Heb 1:6).

Semantic categories: divine worship, worship acceptance, worship refusal

Key verses: Rev 5:13-14, Heb 1:6, Matt 14:33, Rev 19:10, Acts 10:25-26

Relevance: The worship binary is one of the most powerful arguments: zero exceptions in either direction across the entire biblical record.

H7812 — shachah

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H7812-shachah.md

Occurrences: 194

OT worship/prostration vocabulary. The LXX translates shachah as proskyneo, bridging OT and NT worship vocabulary. The Angel of YHWH accepts shachah (Josh 5:14) while created beings do not.

Semantic categories: OT worship, prostration, worship bridge

Key verses: Josh 5:14, Exo 34:8

Relevance: The OT-NT worship vocabulary bridge: shachah → proskyneo creates continuity in the worship binary argument.

G2962 — kyrios

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2962-kyrios.md

Occurrences: 748

Lord — the LXX renders YHWH as kyrios 5,107 times. When NT authors apply kyrios to Jesus while quoting OT YHWH-texts, they identify Jesus with YHWH. Paul's Shema redistribution (1 Cor 8:6) places 'one Lord Jesus Christ' parallel to 'one God the Father.'

Semantic categories: divine title, YHWH equivalent, master/owner

Key verses: 1 Cor 8:6, Phil 2:11, Rom 10:13, Acts 2:36

Relevance: The kyrios-YHWH equivalence is the foundation of the YHWH-title transfer system — every NT quotation of an OT YHWH-text applied to Jesus depends on this equivalence.

H430 — elohim

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H430-elohiym.md

Occurrences: 2689

Plural form for God — 2,689 occurrences. Singular verb agreement ~90% for YHWH. The plural form is permissive of Trinity but not probative alone. Stronger evidence comes from distinct-agent texts: Psa 45:6-7 two-elohim pattern, Gen 19:24 two-YHWH passage.

Semantic categories: divine name, plural form, divine complexity

Key verses: Gen 1:26, Psa 45:6-7, Psa 82:6, Heb 1:8-9

Relevance: The elohim plural provides morphological permission for plurality; the distinct-agent texts provide the content.

H259 — echad

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H259-echad.md

Occurrences: 980

One — 980 occurrences. Permits composite unity (Gen 2:24 'one flesh' from two). Distinguished from yachid (H3173, absolute singularity) which is never applied to YHWH.

Semantic categories: composite unity, numerical one, Shema theology

Key verses: Deut 6:4, Gen 2:24

Relevance: The echad/yachid distinction is foundational: if Moses intended absolute numerical singularity, yachid was available. The Shema's echad permits the composite unity that Paul unpacks in 1 Cor 8:6.

G1510 — eimi

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1510-eimi.md

Occurrences: 155

To be — the verb behind the ego eimi chain. The absolute ego eimi usage in John 8:58 and Mark 14:62 parallels the LXX of Isa 43:10 (ani hu → ego eimi) and Exo 3:14 (ehyeh → ego eimi ho on).

Semantic categories: divine name, existence, ego eimi chain

Key verses: John 8:58, Mark 14:62, John 6:35, John 18:5-6

Relevance: The ego eimi chain from ehyeh through ani hu to John 8:58 connects Jesus' self-identification to the divine name.

H1961 — hayah

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H1961-hayah.md

Occurrences: 4280

To be — root of ehyeh (I AM) and YHWH. 4,280 occurrences. Zero Hiphil attestations demolish the causative 'He causes to be' reading of YHWH. The name describes self-existent being.

Semantic categories: existence, divine name root

Key verses: Exo 3:14

Relevance: The zero Hiphil attestations are linguistically decisive: YHWH cannot mean 'He causes to be' because hayah never appears in the causative stem across 4,280 uses.

G3444 — morphe

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3444-morphe.md

Occurrences: 3

Form/essential nature — 3 occurrences. In Phil 2:6, morphe theou = essential divine nature (not mere appearance). Contrasted with schema (G4976, outward form/fashion) in the same passage.

Semantic categories: essential nature, divine form

Key verses: Phil 2:6, Phil 2:7, Mark 16:12

Relevance: The morphe/schema contrast in Phil 2 is central to the kenosis framework: morphe = essential nature (what does not change); schema = outward form (what changed in incarnation).

G725 — harpagmos

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G725-harpagmos.md

Occurrences: 1

Hapax legomenon in Phil 2:6. Res rapta interpretation: equality with God already possessed, not grasped at. Christ did not consider his existing equality something to exploit for selfish advantage.

Semantic categories: equality possessed, hapax

Key verses: Phil 2:6

Relevance: The res rapta interpretation establishes that Christ's equality with God was a genuine possession before the self-emptying — the kenosis was from a position of actual deity.

H410 — el

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H410-el.md

Occurrences: 271

God — 271 occurrences. 82% = God for YHWH. The singular construct el gibbor is exclusively divine. Isaiah uses el gibbor for both the messianic child (9:6) and YHWH (10:21).

Semantic categories: divine name, el gibbor, mighty God

Key verses: Isa 9:6, Isa 10:21

Relevance: El gibbor in Isa 9:6 is the same YHWH-exclusive title used in Isa 10:21. Isaiah cannot both deny any God besides YHWH and assign a YHWH-exclusive title to a non-divine figure.

H1368 — gibbor

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H1368-gibbowr.md

Occurrences: 167

Mighty — 167 occurrences. In singular construct with el = divine title. The el gibbor compound in Isa 9:6 is morphologically identical to Isa 10:21 where it refers to YHWH.

Semantic categories: mighty, divine title compound

Key verses: Isa 9:6, Isa 10:21

Relevance: The morphological identity between el gibbor in Isa 9:6 and 10:21 proves the messianic child receives YHWH's own title.

H6382 — pele

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6382-pele'.md

Occurrences: 13

Wonder — 13 occurrences, all describing exclusively divine acts. Links Isa 9:6 (pele yoets) to the Angel of YHWH whose name is pili (Judg 13:18) and to YHWH's counsel (Isa 28:29).

Semantic categories: divine acts, wonderful, pele chain

Key verses: Isa 9:6, Judg 13:18, Isa 28:29

Relevance: All 13 occurrences describe exclusively divine acts — the pele root belongs exclusively to the divine domain, connecting the messianic child, the Angel, and YHWH.

G3466 — mysterion

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3466-mysterion.md

Occurrences: 27

Mystery — 27 occurrences. NONE identifies the millennium. The mystery is consistently identified as the gospel (Rom 16:25-26), Gentile inclusion (Eph 3:6), Christ in you (Col 1:26-27), or the incarnation (1 Tim 3:16). Rev 10:7 says the mystery finishes at the seventh trumpet, BEFORE the millennium.

Semantic categories: gospel mystery, revelation of previously hidden truth

Key verses: Rom 16:25-26, Eph 3:6, Col 1:26-27, 1 Tim 3:16, Rev 10:7

Relevance: Refutes the 'sacred secret = millennial kingdom' claim. Zero of 27 occurrences support the identification.

G5293 — hupotasso

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5293-hupotasso.md

Occurrences: 49

Subject/subordinate — 49 occurrences. The future passive hupotagēsetai in 1 Cor 15:28 marks a CHANGE of state — not an eternal arrangement. No pre-incarnation text describes the Son as subordinate.

Semantic categories: subjection, future passive, state change

Key verses: 1 Cor 15:28, Phil 3:21, Eph 5:24

Relevance: The future passive tense is decisive: it describes something that WILL happen, implying it is not the current or eternal state.

H3068 — YHWH

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3068-yhwh.md

Occurrences: 6534

The divine name — 6,534 occurrences. Derived from hayah ('to be'). Functions as the name of the divine identity, not the personal first-name of a single person. Two-YHWH passages (Gen 19:24, Zech 2:8-11) require two bearers.

Semantic categories: divine name, tetragrammaton, divine identity

Key verses: Exo 3:14-15, Gen 19:24, Zech 2:8-11, Isa 44:6

Relevance: The name describes a mode of existence shared by persons within the divine identity. The two-YHWH passages prove two persons bear the name.

H4397 — malak

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H4397-malak.md

Occurrences: 222

Messenger/angel — 222 occurrences. The construct with YHWH (malak YHWH) makes definite 'THE messenger' — a specific figure who is identified as YHWH yet distinct from YHWH.

Semantic categories: messenger, Angel of YHWH, pre-incarnate Christ

Key verses: Exo 3:2, Exo 23:20-21, Judg 13:18, Gen 48:16

Relevance: The Angel of YHWH is the pre-incarnate Christ — identified as YHWH, accepts worship, bears the divine name within himself, exercises divine prerogatives.

G743 — archangelos

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G743-archangelos.md

Occurrences: 2

Archangel — 2 occurrences (1 Thess 4:16, Jude 1:9). Compound of arche + aggelos = ruler OF angels, not membership IN the class. Every Greek compound with arche- designates authority OVER a category.

Semantic categories: ruler of angels, Michael identification

Key verses: 1 Thess 4:16, Jude 1:9

Relevance: The arche- prefix pattern is consistent: archiereus (high priest = over priests), archegos (leader = over a group). Archangelos = ruler of angels, supporting the Michael-Christ identification as a role, not a nature.

G4151 — pneuma

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4151-pneuma.md

Occurrences: 385

Spirit — 385 occurrences. When referring to the Holy Spirit, personal-action verbs disambiguate from impersonal 'force' usage: the Spirit teaches, speaks, intercedes, grieves, distributes gifts as he wills.

Semantic categories: Holy Spirit, personal agent, YHWH identification

Key verses: Acts 5:3-4, 1 Cor 12:11, Eph 4:30, John 14:16-17

Relevance: Six sin-verbs requiring personal victims + ten personal-action verbs in the Farewell Discourse establish the Spirit's personhood. YHWH-identification across three independent NT attributions.

G891 — achri

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G891-achri.md

Occurrences: 49

Until — 49 occurrences. Does NOT require cessation. Matt 28:20: 'lo I am with you always, unto (achri) the end of the world' — Jesus' presence does not cease at the end. 1 Cor 15:25 'till' does not imply reign ends.

Semantic categories: temporal limit marker, without cessation

Key verses: Matt 28:20, 1 Cor 15:25, Acts 2:35

Relevance: Refutes the argument that 'until' in 1 Cor 15:25 means Christ's reign ends. Achri marks a temporal boundary without implying cessation of the preceding action.

H6399 — pelach

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6399-pelach.md

Occurrences: 13

Cultic worship — 13 occurrences, all in Daniel (Aramaic). Exclusively for deity within Daniel's corpus. The Son of Man receives pelach in Dan 7:14.

Semantic categories: cultic worship, divine service

Key verses: Dan 7:14, Dan 3:12, Dan 3:17-18

Relevance: Within Daniel's own literary world, pelach is always divine worship. The Son of Man receiving pelach in Dan 7:14 is equivalent to receiving proskyneo.

G3441 — monos

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3441-mónos.md

Occurrences: 47

Alone/only — 47 occurrences. The monos reductio: if monos absolutely excludes Christ from 'only true God' (John 17:3), it also excludes him from immortality (1 Tim 6:16), wisdom (1 Tim 1:17), sovereignty (1 Tim 6:15), and savior-status (Jude 1:25) — all contradicted by other NT texts.

Semantic categories: exclusivity, doxological divine exclusivity, physical isolation

Key verses: John 17:3, 1 Tim 6:16, 1 Tim 1:17, Jude 1:25, Rev 15:4

Relevance: The monos reductio is decisive: the word functions doxologically against false gods, not ontologically against the Son.

G3187 — meizon

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3187-meizōn.md

Occurrences: 30

Greater — 30 occurrences. Comparative of megas. Used for positional rank among same-nature entities. Distinguished from kreitton (G2909, nature-level superiority). John 14:28 uses meizon, not kreitton.

Semantic categories: positional rank, greater in importance, greater in power

Key verses: John 14:28, John 10:29, Matt 18:1, 1 John 4:4

Relevance: The meizon/kreitton distinction resolves John 14:28: the Father is positionally greater during the incarnation, not ontologically superior.

G2758 — kenoo

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2758-kenóō.md

Occurrences: 7

To empty/make void — 7 occurrences. In Phil 2:7 describes Christ's voluntary self-emptying specified by the following participles: taking servant form, being made in human likeness. Addition of humanity, not subtraction of deity.

Semantic categories: self-abasement, rendering ineffective

Key verses: Phil 2:7, Rom 4:14, 1 Cor 1:17

Relevance: The kenosis is specified by the manner participles — Christ emptied himself BY taking servant form, not by abandoning divine form. The morphe theou remains; the morphe doulou is added.

G2470 — isos

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2470-ísos.md

Occurrences: 7

Equal — 7 occurrences. In Phil 2:6 isa theo = full ontological equality with God. In John 5:18 the Jewish opponents understood Jesus' claim as making himself 'equal with God.' Not mere similarity but identity of kind.

Semantic categories: ontological equality, quantitative equivalence

Key verses: Phil 2:6, John 5:18

Relevance: Isos asserts full equivalence, not partial similarity. Phil 2:6 combined with harpagmos establishes that Christ possessed genuine equality with God before the incarnation.

G5481 — charakter

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5481-charaktēr.md

Occurrences: 1

Hapax in Heb 1:3 — exact imprint of God's hupostasis (essential being). Stronger than eikon (derived likeness): charakter implies point-for-point correspondence. From charasso (to engrave) — the precise impression a seal leaves.

Semantic categories: exact representation, divine being

Key verses: Heb 1:3

Relevance: The Son is not a partial or approximate likeness but the exact, complete representation of the Father's essential nature.

G747 — archegos

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G747-archēgós.md

Occurrences: 4

Chief leader/pioneer/originator — 4 occurrences, exclusively for Christ (Acts 3:15, 5:31, Heb 2:10, 12:2). The arche- prefix designates authority OVER a category, consistent with the archangelos compound.

Semantic categories: pioneer/originator, sovereign ruler

Key verses: Acts 3:15, Acts 5:31, Heb 2:10, Heb 12:2

Relevance: Exclusively applied to Christ. Confirms the arche- prefix pattern: authority OVER, not membership IN.

G2578 — kampto

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2578-kámptō.md

Occurrences: 5

To bow/bend the knee — 5 occurrences. Every NT occurrence involves bowing before deity, never before a human ruler or in a secular context. Used in the Isa 45:23 quotation applied to Christ (Phil 2:10, Rom 14:11).

Semantic categories: divine worship, refusal of false worship

Key verses: Phil 2:10, Rom 14:11, Eph 3:14, Rom 11:4

Relevance: Every occurrence involves deity — when the Isa 45:23 kampto text is applied to Christ, it transfers a worship-of-YHWH text to Jesus.

G1520 — heis

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1520-heîs.md

Occurrences: 353

One — 353 occurrences. Distributed twice in 1 Cor 8:6: 'one God the Father...one Lord Jesus Christ' — the Shema redistribution. Also used for unity between persons (John 10:30 hen, neuter = unity of essence/purpose).

Semantic categories: numerical one, Shema theology, unity between persons

Key verses: 1 Cor 8:6, Mark 12:29, John 10:30, Eph 4:4-6

Relevance: The double use of heis in 1 Cor 8:6 is the Shema redistribution — Paul places Christ within the 'one' of Israel's monotheistic confession.

H5769 — olam

Occurrences: 432

Eternity/everlasting — 432 occurrences. Denotes indefinite duration extending beyond human reckoning, used for God's eternal nature (Deut 33:27 'the eternal God'), the Messiah's origins (Micah 5:2 mimey olam 'from the days of eternity'), and the kingdom's duration (Isa 9:7 ad olam 'unto eternity,' Dan 7:14). The olam vocabulary bridges YHWH's own eternality with the Messiah's pre-existence and kingdom.

Semantic categories: eternity, everlasting duration, divine attribute

Key verses: Micah 5:2, Deut 33:27, Isa 9:7, Dan 7:14, Hab 1:12

Relevance: Olam applied to the Messiah's origins (Micah 5:2) uses the same vocabulary applied to YHWH's own eternality (Deut 33:27), establishing that the Messiah shares YHWH's eternal nature. The 'no end' kingdom witnesses (Isa 9:7, Dan 7:14) depend on olam vocabulary.

G541 — apaugasma

Occurrences: 1

Hapax legomenon in Heb 1:3. Radiance/effulgence — the brightness streaming from a light source. Implies co-eternality: radiance exists as long as the source exists. The Son is the apaugasma of God's glory, meaning he is as eternal as the Father's glory — you cannot have the source without the radiance, or the radiance without the source.

Semantic categories: radiance, co-eternality, divine glory

Key verses: Heb 1:3

Relevance: Apaugasma implies the Son's co-eternality with the Father: just as radiance is co-existent with the light source, the Son is co-existent with the Father's glory. There was never a time when the Father's glory existed without its radiance.
