Word Studies¶
Question¶
Is the Holy Spirit a personal agent who thinks, wills, speaks, and can be sinned against — or an impersonal divine power/force? Examine the Greek grammatical evidence, personal-action verbs attributed to the Spirit, sin-against-the-Spirit passages, and triadic formulas.
G4151 — pneuma¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4151-pneuma.md
Occurrences: 385
Neuter noun from pneo ('to blow/breathe'). Semantic range: wind, breath, human spirit, angelic/demonic spirit, the Holy Spirit. The dominant NT usage is the Holy Spirit (212x 'Spirit/spirit' + 86x 'Ghost'). Neuter grammatical gender is a feature of -ma suffix nouns in Greek, not an indicator of impersonality. Demons (personal beings) are also called pneumata (neuter plural).
Semantic categories: The Holy Spirit / Spirit of God, Unclean / Evil Spirits, Human spirit / Inner self, Wind / Breath
Key verses: Matt 3:16, Acts 2:4, Rom 8:9, 1 Cor 2:10, Gal 5:22
Relevance: Central term. The neuter gender of pneuma is the foundation of anti-personhood argument #1. The semantic range (wind/breath vs. personal spirit) is the core disambiguation question — the personal-action verbs and sins-against passages disambiguate toward personal spirit.
G3875 — parakletos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3875-parakletos.md
Occurrences: 5
Masculine noun from parakaleo ('to call alongside'). Only 5 NT occurrences, all Johannine: John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7, 1 John 2:1. Translated 'Comforter' (4x) and 'advocate' (1x). Masculine gender provides the grammatical antecedent for ekeinos in the Wallace analysis. Jesus is explicitly parakletos in 1 John 2:1 — the Spirit is 'another (allos) parakletos.'
Semantic categories: The Spirit as Divine Helper, Christ as Legal Advocate
Key verses: John 14:16, John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7, 1 John 2:1
Relevance: The term that frames the Spirit as a successor to Jesus' personal ministry. The masculine gender is central to the Wallace/Clouzet debate about ekeinos agreement.
G243 — allos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G243-allos.md
Occurrences: 160
Primary adjective meaning 'another, other.' 160 tokens across 141 verses. Traditionally distinguished from heteros (G2087) as 'another of the same kind' vs. 'another of a different kind.' However, Thayer cautions: 'allos generally denotes simply distinction of individuals.' The Ministry Magazine (2012) warns against overreliance on this distinction.
Semantic categories: Another of the Same Kind, General numerical distinction
Key verses: John 14:16, 1 Cor 12:8-10, Gal 1:7
Relevance: The allos parakletos argument (John 14:16) claims the Spirit is 'another Comforter of the same kind' as Jesus. This is a personhood argument if allos consistently implies sameness of kind. The evidence shows the distinction is real but not absolute.
G2087 — heteros¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2087-heteros.md
Occurrences: 99
Adjective meaning 'another of a different kind, other.' Contrasts with allos. Distinctly Lukan (50 of 94 verses in Luke-Acts). The traditional allos/heteros distinction is valid but not rigid — some passages use them interchangeably.
Semantic categories: Another of different kind, General distinction
Key verses: Gal 1:6-7, Acts 4:12
Relevance: The contrast with allos supports (but does not prove) the 'same-kind' reading of allos parakletos. John chose allos, not heteros, for the Spirit.
G1014 — boulomai¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1014-boulomai.md
Occurrences: 34
Middle voice verb meaning 'to will, to purpose, to determine.' Denotes deliberate, reasoned decision — not mere wish but settled resolve of a rational agent. In 1 Cor 12:11 (bouletai, Pres M/P Ind 3S), the Spirit distributes gifts 'as he wills' — the clearest attribution of personal volition to the Spirit. The middle voice emphasizes the Spirit's own deliberate choice.
Semantic categories: Deliberate personal willing, Purposeful determination, Sovereign decision
Key verses: 1 Cor 12:11, Jas 1:18, 2 Pet 3:9
Relevance: bouletai in 1 Cor 12:11 is the strongest single verb attributing personal volition to the Spirit. boulomai denotes rational, deliberate willing — not the kind of action attributable to an impersonal force.
G3076 — lupeo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3076-lypeo.md
Occurrences: 30
Verb meaning 'to grieve, to cause sadness, to distress.' 30 NT occurrences. In Eph 4:30 (lupeite, Pres Act Impv 2P), Paul commands believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit. The construction me + present imperative = 'stop grieving' — implying ongoing action. lupeo requires a personal subject capable of emotional response.
Semantic categories: Emotional grief/sadness, Interpersonal pain, Sorrow over wrongdoing
Key verses: Eph 4:30, 2 Cor 2:2, 2 Cor 7:9, Matt 26:22
Relevance: The Spirit can be grieved (lupeo) — an emotional response requiring personhood. This is the NT counterpart to Isa 63:10 (atsab).
G2045 — eraunao¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2045-ereunaó.md
Occurrences: 6
Verb meaning 'to search, examine, investigate.' 6 NT occurrences. Denotes thorough, penetrating search — not casual awareness but deliberate, methodical investigation. In 1 Cor 2:10 (erauna, PAI-3S), the Spirit 'searches all things, even the deep things of God' — cognitive agency requiring a personal subject. In Rom 8:27, God 'searches hearts' and 'knows the mind (phronema) of the Spirit.'
Semantic categories: Divine omniscient searching, Human diligent inquiry
Key verses: 1 Cor 2:10, Rom 8:27, Rev 2:23, John 5:39
Relevance: eraunao in 1 Cor 2:10 attributes deliberate investigative cognition to the Spirit — the Spirit searches the deep things of God. This is an exclusively personal cognitive act.
G5427 — phronema¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5427-phronema.md
Occurrences: 6
Neuter noun meaning 'mind, mindset, settled disposition.' All 6 NT occurrences in Romans 8. The phronema of the flesh = death and enmity (8:6-7). The phronema of the Spirit = life and peace (8:6). God knows 'the phronema of the Spirit' (8:27). Impersonal forces do not possess a phronema — a settled mental disposition.
Semantic categories: The flesh's mindset — death, The Spirit's mindset — life and peace, The Spirit's knowable mind
Key verses: Rom 8:6, Rom 8:7, Rom 8:27
Relevance: The Spirit possesses a phronema — a mind/mindset. This is the most direct attribution of cognitive faculty to the Spirit. Only persons have a phronema.
G5241 — huperentugchano¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G5241-huperentugchano.md
Occurrences: 1
Hapax legomenon (only Rom 8:26). Compound: huper ('on behalf of') + en ('in') + tugchano ('to meet/encounter'). Means 'to intercede on behalf of.' The Spirit intercedes for believers with unutterable groanings. Intercession is a personal, relational act — only a person can intercede.
Semantic categories: Personal intercessory prayer, Advocacy on behalf of others
Key verses: Rom 8:26
Relevance: The Spirit intercedes (huperentugchano) — a uniquely personal act. Combined with the Spirit's phronema (8:27), this establishes the Spirit as a personal intercessor with cognitive faculties.
G987 — blasphemeo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G987-blasphemeo.md
Occurrences: 39
Verb meaning 'to blaspheme, revile, speak evil of.' 35 NT occurrences. In Matt 12:31-32, blasphemy against the Spirit is unforgivable. blasphemeo requires a personal object — one cannot blaspheme an impersonal force. The verb is used for speaking against God (Rev 13:6), against Christ (Luke 22:65), and against the Spirit (Matt 12:31).
Semantic categories: Reviling God/divine persons, Defaming/slandering persons
Key verses: Matt 12:31, Mark 3:29, Rev 13:6
Relevance: Blasphemy is directed against persons, not forces. If the Spirit can be blasphemed, the Spirit is personal. The parallel with blasphemy against God and Christ places the Spirit in the same ontological category.
G988 — blasphemia¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G988-blasphemia.md
Occurrences: 18
Noun meaning 'blasphemy, evil speaking, slander.' 18 NT occurrences. In Matt 12:31, 'the blasphemy (blasphemia) of/against the Spirit' — objective genitive. Blasphemy is a category of personal offense.
Semantic categories: Blasphemy against God, Slander against persons
Key verses: Matt 12:31, Mark 7:22, Rev 13:6
Relevance: The noun form in Matt 12:31 ('the blasphemy of the Spirit') confirms that the Spirit is the object/target of blasphemy — a personal offense.
G3686 — onoma¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3686-onoma.md
Occurrences: 228
Neuter noun meaning 'name.' ~228 NT occurrences, overwhelmingly referring to persons. In Matt 28:19, the singular onoma governs three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The singular 'name' for three persons implies shared identity. BeliefMap notes onoma refers to persons in all but ~4 exceptional cases.
Semantic categories: Personal name/identity, Authority/representation, Character/reputation
Key verses: Matt 28:19, Acts 2:38, Phil 2:9-10
Relevance: The singular onoma in Matt 28:19 governing all three divine persons is significant: one shared name implies one shared identity. onoma is overwhelmingly personal — applying it to the Spirit places the Spirit in the personal category.
G1754 — energeo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1754-energeo.md
Occurrences: 21
Verb meaning 'to work, energize, be active.' 21 NT occurrences. In 1 Cor 12:6, God 'works all in all' (energon ta panta en pasin). In 12:11, the Spirit 'works' (energei) all gifts. Could potentially be used of impersonal forces, but combined with bouletai (personal willing) and diairei (personal distributing) in the same verse, the cluster requires a personal agent.
Semantic categories: Divine active working, Supernatural empowerment
Key verses: 1 Cor 12:6, 1 Cor 12:11, Gal 2:8, Phil 2:13
Relevance: energeo alone could theoretically apply to an impersonal force, but in 1 Cor 12:11 it appears alongside bouletai and diaireo — the triad of verbs collectively requires personal agency.
G1565 — ekeinos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1565-ekeinos.md
Occurrences: 249
Distal demonstrative pronoun meaning 'that one.' Inflects for gender: masculine ekeinos, feminine ekeine, neuter ekeino. 249 NT occurrences. In John 14:26, 15:26, 16:8, 16:13, 16:14, ekeinos appears in masculine nominative singular (D-NSM) as subject of personal verbs attributed to the Spirit. Wallace argues it tracks the masculine parakletos; Clouzet argues it breaks grammatical gender for neuter pneuma.
Semantic categories: Distal personal reference, Emphatic subject identification
Key verses: John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:8, John 16:13, John 16:14
Relevance: The grammatical debate pivot. Masculine ekeinos with neuter pneuma is the central grammatical question. The parsing data confirms ekeinos is D-NSM (masculine) while pneuma is N-NSN (neuter) — a gender mismatch that Wallace explains by parakletos antecedent and Clouzet explains by personhood override.
G4828 — symmartureo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G4828-symmartyreō.md
Occurrences: 5
Compound verb: syn ('with/together') + martureo ('to testify'). 5 NT occurrences. Means 'to testify jointly, to corroborate by concurrent evidence.' In Rom 8:16, the Spirit 'bears witness with' (synmarturei) the believer's spirit. The syn- prefix makes this a joint personal act between two distinct witnesses. Testimony is inherently personal.
Semantic categories: Internal co-witness of conscience, Spirit's co-witness with human spirit, Solemn joint attestation
Key verses: Rom 8:16, Rom 2:15, Rom 9:1
Relevance: The Spirit co-testifies (sym-) with the believer's spirit — coordinated personal testimony between two distinct agents. The syn- prefix requires two persons acting in concert.
H6087 — atsab¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6087-ʻâtsab.md
Occurrences: 22
Hebrew verb meaning 'to hurt, grieve, pain, vex.' 22 OT occurrences. In Isa 63:10 (Piel stem: itsbu), the Israelites 'grieved/vexed his Holy Spirit.' The Piel intensifies: they actively caused pain. atsab requires a personal subject capable of emotional response — you cannot grieve a force.
Semantic categories: Emotional grief/pain, Causing personal distress, Divine emotional response
Key verses: Isa 63:10, Gen 6:6, 1 Chr 4:10, Psa 78:40
Relevance: The OT counterpart to Eph 4:30 (lupeo). If the Spirit can be grieved/vexed (atsab, Piel), the Spirit has emotional capacity — a personal attribute. This is the earliest biblical attribution of emotional response to the Spirit.
H7307 — ruach¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H7307-ruach.md
Occurrences: 434
Hebrew noun meaning 'wind, breath, spirit.' The primary OT term for the Spirit of God. Semantic range parallels Greek pneuma: physical wind, life-breath, human spirit, divine Spirit. In contexts like Gen 1:2 (merachephet), Isa 63:10 (atsab), Isa 48:16 (co-sending), the Spirit acts as a personal agent.
Semantic categories: Spirit of God, Wind/breath, Human spirit, Disposition/attitude
Key verses: Gen 1:2, Gen 6:3, Isa 11:2, Isa 48:16, Isa 63:10
Relevance: The Hebrew counterpart to pneuma. The OT evidence (creative agency, grievability, co-agency in sending) establishes personal qualities before any NT development.
G3004 — lego¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3004-lego.md
Occurrences: 1349
Primary verb meaning 'to say, speak, tell.' The most common speech verb in the NT. Attributed to the Spirit in Acts 8:29, 10:19, 13:2, 28:25; Heb 3:7, 10:15; Rev 2:7, 14:13; 1 Tim 4:1. The Spirit 'says' (legei/eipen) — direct speech attribution.
Semantic categories: Speech/communication, Authoritative declaration, Direct address
Key verses: Acts 13:2, Heb 3:7, Rev 2:7, 1 Tim 4:1
Relevance: The Spirit is repeatedly the grammatical subject of lego/eipon — the standard speech verb. The Spirit says, speaks, and communicates propositional content. Speech is inherently personal.
G3140 — martyreo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G3140-martyreo.md
Occurrences: 86
Verb meaning 'to testify, bear witness.' 76 NT occurrences. The Spirit testifies (martyreo) of Christ (John 15:26), is a witness (Heb 10:15), and bears witness with our spirits (Rom 8:16 via compound symmartureo). Testimony is a judicial, personal act.
Semantic categories: Legal testimony, Divine witness, Personal attestation
Key verses: John 15:26, Heb 10:15, 1 John 5:6
Relevance: The Spirit testifies — a personal judicial act. In John 15:26, the Spirit's testimony is coordinated with the apostles' witness ('ye also shall bear witness').
G1492 — oida¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1492-oida.md
Occurrences: 334
Verb meaning 'to know' (intuitive, complete knowledge). In 1 Cor 2:11, the Spirit 'knows' (oiden/egnoken) the things of God — paralleled with a person's spirit knowing their own thoughts. This is cognitive personal knowledge.
Semantic categories: Intuitive knowledge, Complete/perfect knowing
Key verses: 1 Cor 2:11, Rom 8:27
Relevance: The Spirit knows (oida) the things of God — a cognitive verb requiring a personal knower. Paul's analogy with human self-knowledge (1 Cor 2:11) presupposes the Spirit has the same kind of personal cognitive capacity.
G2316 — theos¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2316-theos.md
Occurrences: 1343
Noun meaning 'God.' The Spirit is identified with God in Acts 5:3-4 (lying to Spirit = lying to God), 2 Cor 3:17 ('the Lord is that Spirit'), and through YHWH-attribution passages (Acts 28:25, Heb 3:7, Heb 10:15).
Semantic categories: The one true God, Divine identity
Key verses: Acts 5:4, 2 Cor 3:17

Semantic categories: Divine favor, Unmerited blessing
Key verses: 2 Cor 13:14
Relevance: The triadic benediction coordinates grace (Christ), love (God), and communion (Spirit) as three parallel personal attributes from three personal agents.
H6944 — qodesh¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6944-qodesh.md
Occurrences: 452
Hebrew noun meaning 'holiness, holy.' In the construct 'ruach qodsho' (Isa 63:10, 'his holy spirit'), the possessive suffix connects the Spirit to YHWH while the holiness attribute describes the Spirit's character.
Semantic categories: Divine holiness, Consecration, Sacred character
Key verses: Isa 63:10, Psa 51:11
Relevance: The construct 'his Holy Spirit' (ruach qodsho) in Isaiah 63:10 attributes holiness — a divine moral attribute — to the Spirit.
G40 — hagios¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G40-hagios.md
Occurrences: 229
Adjective meaning 'holy, sacred, set apart.' The standard modifier for the Spirit: to Pneuma to Hagion ('the Holy Spirit'). Holiness is a moral attribute requiring a personal possessor.
Semantic categories: Divine holiness, Moral purity
Key verses: Matt 28:19, Acts 5:3, Eph 4:30
Relevance: The consistent designation 'Holy Spirit' attributes a moral quality (holiness) to the Spirit — moral attributes belong to persons.
