Verses¶
Question¶
Is the Holy Spirit a personal agent who thinks, wills, speaks, and can be sinned against — or an impersonal divine power/force? Examine the Greek grammatical evidence, personal-action verbs attributed to the Spirit, sin-against-the-Spirit passages, and triadic formulas.
Allos parakletos — another Comforter of the same kind¶
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Context: Jesus' Farewell Discourse (John 14-16). Jesus is preparing the disciples for his departure and promising a replacement personal presence — 'another' (allos) Comforter of the same kind as himself.
Notes: Greek: allos (G243, Acc Sg M) parakletos (G3875, Acc Sg M) — 'another Comforter.' In v.17, pneuma (N-ASN neuter) is called 'the Spirit of truth' and the relative pronoun ho (R-ASN) agrees with the neuter pneuma. The pronoun auto (P-ASN neuter) in v.17 also agrees with pneuma grammatically. This is the verse where the allos/heteros distinction matters: allos = another of same kind (Jesus = first parakletos per 1 John 2:1).
Ekeinos (masculine) for the Spirit — the grammatical debate pivot¶
But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Context: Continuation of Farewell Discourse. Jesus identifies the Comforter as 'the Holy Ghost' and describes teaching and remembrance — cognitive personal verbs.
Notes: CRITICAL GRAMMATICAL DATA: ho Parakletos (N-NSM, masculine) is in apposition with to Pneuma to Hagion (N-NSN/A-NSN, neuter). Then ekeinos (D-NSM, masculine nominative singular) is the subject of didaxei (V-FAI-3S, 'will teach') and hupomnesei (V-FAI-3S, 'will remind'). Wallace argues ekeinos tracks Parakletos (masculine) as antecedent. Clouzet argues it tracks Pneuma despite the gender mismatch. The relative pronoun ho (R-ASN, neuter) that introduces the Father-sending clause agrees with pneuma (neuter), showing John is aware of the grammatical gender — then switches to masculine ekeinos for the subject of the personal verbs.
Spirit of truth testifies — ekeinos with martureo¶
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
Context: Jesus explains the Spirit's testimonial role — proceeding from the Father and testifying of Christ — coordinated alongside apostolic witness.
Notes: Structure: ho Parakletos (N-NSM) ... to Pneuma tes aletheias (N-NSN) ho (R-NSN, neuter relative) ... ekeinos (D-NSM, masculine) marturese (V-FAI-3S 'will testify'). Again, the relative pronoun ho agreeing with neuter pneuma appears, then ekeinos (masculine) serves as the subject of the personal verb martureo. The Spirit is coordinated with the apostles ('ye also shall bear witness') — both personal witnesses.
The Spirit convicts the world — judicial personal action¶
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Context: Jesus explains why his departure is necessary — the Paraclete's coming requires it. The Spirit's work is judicial: convicting (elegcho) the world concerning three categories.
Notes: In v.7: ho Parakletos (N-NSM) is subject. pempso auton (P-ASM, 'I will send him') — masculine accusative pronoun for the Paraclete. In v.8: ekeinos (D-NSM) elegxei (V-FAI-3S, 'will convict') ton kosmon. The verb elegcho means to convict, reprove, expose — a judicial act requiring a personal prosecutor. Three categories: sin (unbelief), righteousness (Christ's vindication), judgment (Satan's condemnation).
Six personal verbs with ekeinos — densest personhood cluster¶
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.
Context: The most verb-dense Spirit passage in the NT. Six distinct personal verbs attributed to the Spirit within three verses.
Notes: v.13: ekeinos (D-NSM) is subject for: hodegese (G3594, 'will guide'), lalesei (G2980, 'will speak'), akouei (G191, 'hears'), lalesei again ('will speak'), anangelei (G312, 'will declare'). v.14: ekeinos (D-NSM) again as subject: doxasei (G1392, 'will glorify'), lempsetai (G2983, Fut Mid 'will receive'), anangelei ('will declare'). v.15: lambanei (G2983, 'receives'), anangelei ('will declare'). heautou (F-3GSM, masculine reflexive) in 'aph heautou' = 'from himself.' The reflexive pronoun is masculine, tracking the masculine ekeinos. Total personal verbs: guide, speak, hear, declare, glorify, receive — all requiring a personal subject.
Lying to the Spirit = lying to God — direct deity identification¶
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back [part] of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Context: Ananias and Sapphira incident. Peter accuses Ananias of lying to the Holy Spirit (v.3) and then immediately equates this with lying to God (v.4).
- ψεύσασθαί (G5574) — V-ADN — Aor Mid Inf | Πνεῦμα πνεῦμα G4151 [N-ASN] | Ἅγιον ἅγιος G40 [A-ASN]
Notes: v.3: pseudomai (G5574, Aor Mid Inf) se to Pneuma to Hagion — 'to lie to (accusative) the Holy Spirit.' v.4: ouk epseuso (G5574, Aor Mid Ind 2S) anthropois alla to Theo (N-DSM, 'to God'). The shift from 'lied to the Holy Spirit' to 'lied to God' without any qualification is a direct identification. The verb pseudomai with the Spirit as object requires a personal being who can be the target of deception.
Spirit speaks direct commands to Philip¶
Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
Context: The Ethiopian eunuch narrative. The Spirit gives Philip a direct, specific command.
Notes: eipen (G3004, V-2AAI-3S 'said') to Pneuma (N-NSN) to Philippo (N-DSM) — 'the Spirit said to Philip.' The verb lego/eipen (to say/speak) with the Spirit as grammatical subject — the Spirit issues a personal command. The command is specific and situational, not a general principle.
Spirit uses first-person 'I' — ego apestalka¶
While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
Context: Cornelius narrative. The Spirit speaks to Peter using first-person pronouns.
Notes: v.19: eipen to Pneuma (N-NSN 'the Spirit said'). v.20: ego (P-1NS, first-person 'I') apestalka (G649, V-RAI-1S Perf Act Ind 1st person 'I have sent') autous (them). The Spirit uses the first-person pronoun ego and the first-person verb form — 'I have sent them.' An impersonal force does not say 'I.'
Spirit speaks in first person: 'Separate me Barnabas and Saul'¶
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
Context: The church at Antioch worshiping and fasting. The Holy Spirit speaks to the assembly with first-person pronouns.
Notes: eipen (V-2AAI-3S 'said') to Pneuma to Hagion (N-NSN/A-NSN). Then first-person: Aphorisate (V-AAM-2P 'Separate') de moi (P-1DS, dative 'me') — the Spirit says 'Separate FOR ME.' proskeklemai (V-RNI-1S, Perf M/P Ind 1st person 'I have called') autous — 'I have called them.' Two first-person forms (moi and proskeklemai) with the Spirit as speaker. This is decisive personal speech.
Spirit exercises joint decision-making with the apostles¶
For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
Context: Jerusalem Council decree. The apostles coordinate the Spirit as a co-deliberator alongside themselves.
Notes: edoxen (G1380, V-AAI-3S 'it seemed good') to Pneumati to Hagio (N-DSN/A-DSN, dative) kai hemin (P-1DP, 'and to us'). The Spirit is placed alongside the apostles as a co-deliberator using the same dative construction — 'to the Spirit... and to us.' This grammatical coordination presupposes equal personal agency.
Spirit forbids and does not permit — volitional overruling¶
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
Context: Paul's second missionary journey. The Holy Spirit actively overrules human plans.
Notes: v.6: koluthentes (G2967, V-APP-NPM Aor Pass Ptcp 'having been forbidden') hupo tou Hagiou Pneumatos (by the Holy Spirit) — the Spirit as agent of prohibition (hupo + genitive = personal agent). v.7: ouk eiasen (G1439, V-AAI-3S 'did not permit') autous to Pneuma Iesou ('the Spirit of Jesus') — the Spirit exercises volitional authority to override apostolic plans.
Spirit = YHWH — Paul attributes Isaiah 6:9-10 to the Holy Spirit¶
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with [their] eyes, and hear with [their] ears, and understand with [their] heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
Context: Paul's final appeal to the Roman Jews. He attributes the words of Isaiah 6:9-10, spoken by YHWH in Isaiah's throne-room vision, to the Holy Spirit.
- Πνεῦμα (G4151) — N-NSN — | ἐλάλησεν λαλέω G2980 [V-AAI-3S] Aor Act Ind
Notes: to Pneuma to Hagion (N-NSN) elalesen (G2980, V-AAI-3S 'spoke') dia Esaiou — 'the Holy Spirit spoke through Isaiah.' In the original context (Isa 6:8-10), it is YHWH (Adonai) who speaks. Paul directly identifies the Holy Spirit as the YHWH who spoke in Isaiah's vision. The verb laleo ('spoke') with Spirit as subject — personal speech attribution.
Spirit bears witness with our spirits — personal co-testimony¶
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Context: Romans 8 — the Spirit's ministry to believers. The Spirit co-testifies with the believer's spirit about adoption.
- Πνεῦμα (G4151) — N-NSN — | συνμαρτυρεῖ συμμαρτυρέω G4828 [V-PAI-3S] Pres Act Ind
Notes: auto to Pneuma (P-NSN + N-NSN) sunmarturei (G4828, V-PAI-3S Pres Act Ind 'bears witness with') to pneumati hemon. The sym- prefix ('with') in symmartureo indicates joint, coordinated testimony between two distinct witnesses. The Spirit testifies alongside the human spirit — a personal act of co-witness.
Spirit intercedes and has phronema (mind) — cognitive faculties¶
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God.
Context: Romans 8 — the Spirit's intercessory ministry. The Spirit has both cognitive and emotional capacity: a mind (phronema) and intercession with groanings.
Notes: v.26: auto to Pneuma (N-NSN) huperentugchanei (G5241, V-PAI-3S, hapax legomenon 'intercedes on behalf of') stenagmois alaletois ('with unutterable groanings'). v.27: to phronema (G5427, N-NSN 'the mind/mindset') tou Pneumatos (G4151, N-GSN). Also entugchanei (G1793, V-PAI-3S 'intercedes') huper hagion kata theon. The Spirit possesses a phronema — a settled disposition, mindset, way of thinking. Phronema occurs only 6 times in NT, all in Romans 8. It is attributed to both 'the flesh' (8:6-7) and 'the Spirit' (8:6, 8:27). Impersonal forces do not have a phronema.
Spirit searches and knows — cognitive verbs requiring personal subject¶
But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
Context: Paul's argument about divine revelation. The Spirit is the agent through whom God reveals hidden wisdom.
Notes: v.10: to Pneuma (N-NSN) panta erauna (G2045, V-PAI-3S 'searches all things') kai ta bathe tou Theou ('even the deep things of God'). v.11: to Pneuma tou Theou (N-NSN) — paralleled with 'the spirit of man which is in him.' Paul's analogy: just as a person's own spirit knows their inner thoughts, so God's Spirit knows God's inner thoughts. The verb eraunao means to investigate thoroughly — a cognitive act. The verb oiden (G1492, V-RAI-3S 'knows') is used for the human spirit's self-knowledge. Paul attributes the same type of knowledge to the Spirit of God — personal cognitive agency.
Spirit distributes gifts as he wills — clearest volitional attribution¶
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Context: Paul's discussion of spiritual gifts. The Spirit is the sovereign distributor of gifts — exercising personal volition.
Notes: to hen kai to auto Pneuma (N-NSN 'the one and the same Spirit'): energei (G1754, V-PAI-3S 'energizes/works'), diairoun (G1244, V-PAP-NSN Pres Act Ptcp 'distributing'), kathos bouletai (G1014, V-PNI-3S Pres M/P Ind 'as he wills'). boulomai denotes deliberate, reasoned decision — not mere wish but settled resolve of a rational agent. The middle voice (bouletai) emphasizes the Spirit's own deliberate personal choice. Three verbs: energizes, distributes, wills — all requiring a volitional subject.
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit — emotional capacity requiring personhood¶
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Context: Ephesians 4:25-32 ethical instruction. Paul inserts this command about the Spirit amidst behavioral exhortations — grieving is a personal emotional response.
Notes: me (negative particle) lupeite (G3076, V-PAM-2P Pres Act Impv 'grieve') to Pneuma to Hagion tou Theou. The construction me + present imperative = prohibitive present imperative: 'stop grieving' or 'do not continue grieving' — implying an ongoing action being prohibited. lupeo means to cause grief, pain, sadness — an emotional response that requires a personal subject capable of feeling. The sealing language (esphragisthete, Aor Pass Ind 'you were sealed') connects the Spirit's personal role to the believer's security.
Blasphemy against the Spirit — unforgivable personal offense¶
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come.
Context: Matthew 12:22-37. The Pharisees attribute Jesus' Spirit-empowered exorcism to Beelzebub. Jesus warns that blasphemy against the Spirit is unforgivable.
- Πνεύματος (G4151) — N-GSN — | βλασφημία βλασφημία G988 [N-NSF]
Notes: v.31: he de tou Pneumatos blasphemia (G988, N-NSF + G4151 N-GSN) ouk aphethesetai — 'the blasphemy of/against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.' The genitive tou Pneumatos is objective genitive — blasphemy directed against the Spirit. v.32: kata tou Pneumatos tou Hagiou (genitive) — 'against the Holy Spirit.' Blasphemeo (G987) fundamentally means to speak against, revile, defame — it requires a personal object. You cannot blaspheme electricity or gravity. The context makes the sin specific: attributing the Spirit's work to Satan.
Always resisting the Holy Spirit — personal opposition language¶
Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers [did], so [do] ye.
Context: Stephen's speech before the Sanhedrin. He accuses them of perpetuating their fathers' pattern of resisting the Spirit.
Notes: humeis aei to Pneumati to Hagio (N-DSN/A-DSN dative) antipiptete (G496, V-PAI-2P Pres Act Ind 'you resist/fall against'). antipipto (hapax in NT) means to resist, oppose, fall against — personal opposition language. The Spirit is in the dative as the indirect object of opposition. The historical pattern ('as your fathers') presupposes the Spirit was personally active throughout Israel's history.
Tempting the Spirit of the Lord — testing a personal being¶
Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband [are] at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Context: Sapphira's examination. Peter charges her with conspiring to tempt/test the Spirit.
Notes: peirasai (G3985, V-AAN Aor Act Inf 'to tempt/test') to Pneuma Kuriou (N-ASN + N-GSM 'the Spirit of the Lord'). peirazo means to test, try, tempt — one tests a person, not a force.
Insulting the Spirit of grace — treating a person with contempt¶
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Context: Hebrews 10:26-31 warning against deliberate sin after receiving knowledge of truth. Three offenses listed in escalating order.
- Πνεῦμα (G4151) — N-ASN — | χάριτος χάρις G5485 [N-GSF] | ἐνυβρίσας ἐνυβρίζω G1796 [V-AAP-NSM] Aor Act Ptcp
Notes: Three parallel offenses: (1) katapatesas (trampling) the Son of God, (2) hegosamenos (counting) the blood unclean, (3) enubrisas (G1796, V-AAP-NSM Aor Act Ptcp 'having insulted') to Pneuma tes charitos (N-ASN + N-GSF 'the Spirit of grace'). enubrizo means to insult, treat with contempt, outrage — it requires a personal victim. The Spirit is coordinated with the Son of God and the covenant blood in a three-part offense structure.
The Holy Ghost saith — Spirit attributed YHWH's Psalm 95 speech¶
Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in [their] heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
Context: Hebrews introduces a quotation from Psalm 95:7-11 by attributing it to 'the Holy Ghost.' In the original psalm, YHWH speaks in first person.
Notes: legei (G3004, V-PAI-3S 'says') to Pneuma to Hagion (N-NSN/A-NSN) — 'the Holy Spirit says.' The present tense legei implies ongoing address (not just past speech). The quoted text has first-person divine speech: 'they tempted me... I was grieved... I sware in my wrath.' The Hebrews author attributes this YHWH speech to the Holy Spirit — direct Spirit = YHWH identification. Also note autou (P-GSM, masculine genitive 'his') in 'his voice' referring to the Spirit.
The Holy Ghost is a witness — Spirit attributed Jeremiah 31 speech¶
[Whereof] the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Context: Hebrews attributes the new covenant promise of Jeremiah 31:33-34 to the testimony of the Holy Spirit.
Notes: Marturei (G3140, V-PAI-3S 'bears witness/testifies') hemin kai to Pneuma to Hagion — 'the Holy Spirit also testifies to us.' The Spirit is described as a martureo-ing agent — testimony is a personal, judicial act. The quoted text is from Jeremiah 31:33-34 where YHWH speaks. The Spirit is both testifier (personal act) and identified with the YHWH who made the covenant promise.
Through the eternal Spirit — Spirit's agency in the atonement¶
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Context: Hebrews 9:11-15. The superiority of Christ's sacrifice — offered through (dia) the eternal Spirit.
- Πνεύματος (G4151) — N-GSN — Gen Sg N | αἰωνίου αἰώνιος G166 [A-GSN] Gen Sg N | προσήνεγκεν προσφέρω G4374 [V-AAI-3S]
Notes: dia (PREP) Pneumatos (G4151, N-GSN genitive) aioniou (G166, A-GSN 'eternal'). dia + genitive = through/by means of — indicating agency. The Spirit is the agent through whom Christ offered himself. The adjective aionios ('eternal') is the same word applied to God (Rom 16:26, 'the everlasting God') and to eternal life. If the Spirit is eternal, the Spirit possesses a divine attribute. This makes the Spirit an active participant in the atonement, not a passive instrument.
The Lord is that Spirit — direct identification with kyrios/YHWH¶
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty.
Context: Paul's discussion of the veil of Moses and the new covenant ministry. He directly identifies the Lord with the Spirit.
Notes: ho Kurios (G2962, N-NSM 'the Lord') to Pneuma (G4151, N-NSN) estin (V-PAI-3S 'is'). Direct predication: 'the Lord IS the Spirit.' In LXX context, kyrios = YHWH. Paul then says 'the Spirit of the Lord' (to Pneuma Kuriou) — showing the Spirit is both identified with YHWH and distinguished from YHWH in an economic sense. This is a direct Spirit-deity text.
Triadic formula — singular name governing three persons¶
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Context: The Great Commission. Jesus commands baptism in the singular name (onoma) of three persons.
Notes: eis to onoma (G3686, N-ASN Acc Sg 'into the NAME' — singular) tou Patros (G3962, N-GSM) kai tou Huiou (G5207, N-GSM) kai tou Hagiou Pneumatos (G40 A-GSN + G4151 N-GSN). The singular onoma governs all three persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit share one name. onoma in the NT is used ~228 times overwhelmingly for persons. The three are grammatically coordinated by kai...kai... (and...and...) under a single article-noun construction. The Spirit is placed in co-equal coordination with the Father and the Son.
Triadic benediction — grace, love, and fellowship of the three¶
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, [be] with you all. Amen.
Context: Paul's closing benediction to the Corinthians — the most explicit triadic formula in the epistles.
- χάρις (G5485) — N-NSF — | ἀγάπη ἀγάπη G26 [N-NSF] | κοινωνία κοινωνία G2842 [N-NSF] | Πνεύματος πνεῦμα G4151 [N-GSN]
Notes: Three parallel genitive constructions: he charis (G5485, N-NSF 'the grace') tou Kuriou Iesou Christou, kai he agape (G26, N-NSF 'the love') tou Theou, kai he koinonia (G2842, N-NSF 'the fellowship/communion') tou Hagiou Pneumatos (G40/G4151, N-GSN). The Spirit is attributed koinonia — fellowship, sharing, communion — which is inherently relational and personal. The three persons are grammatically and structurally co-equal: each has an article + noun + genitive personal name.
Triadic salutation — foreknowledge, sanctification, sprinkling¶
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Context: Peter's opening salutation. The election of believers is described as the work of all three divine persons.
Notes: kata prognosin (G4268) Theou Patros (Father's foreknowledge), en hagiasmo (G38) Pneumatos (Spirit's sanctification), eis hupakoen kai rantismon (G4473) haimatos Iesou Christou (Son's blood-sprinkling). Three persons, three distinct roles, one salvific work. The Spirit's role is sanctification — a purposive, personal action (not a passive force). The prepositions kata (according to), en (in/through), eis (unto) create a triadic structure.
Same Spirit, same Lord, same God — triadic distribution of gifts¶
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and [that] no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
Context: Paul's introduction to the spiritual gifts discussion. He coordinates the Spirit, the Lord (Christ), and God (the Father) in parallel distribution roles.
Notes: Triadic parallel: to auto Pneuma (v.4 'the same Spirit'), ho autos Kurios (v.5 'the same Lord'), ho autos Theos (v.6 'the same God'). Each person distributes different aspects: gifts (charismata), administrations (diakoniai), operations (energemata). The Spirit is placed first in the triad and is the same structural level as Lord and God.
One Spirit, one Lord, one God — triadic confession of unity¶
[There is] one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.
Context: Paul's appeal for unity. Seven 'ones' structured around the three divine persons.
Notes: hen Pneuma (one Spirit), heis Kurios (one Lord), heis Theos kai Pater (one God and Father). The Spirit is listed first, followed by Lord (Christ) and God (Father). The seven 'ones' cluster around the three persons: Spirit (v.4), Lord (v.5), Father (v.6).
Spirit of God hovered — active agency in creation¶
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Context: The creation narrative. The Spirit of God is present and active at the very beginning of creation.
Notes: ruach (H7307, Noun construct 'spirit/wind of') elohim (H430) merachephet (H7363, Verb Piel Ptcp fs 'hovering/brooding'). The Piel stem of rachaph indicates intensive action — not passive presence but active brooding/hovering. The only other use of rachaph in the OT is Deut 32:11 where an eagle 'flutters over' its young — an image of intentional, protective, purposive activity. The Spirit is a distinct agent alongside God (elohim) at creation.
They vexed his Holy Spirit — OT emotional response attributed to Spirit¶
But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, [and] he fought against them.
Context: Isaiah 63:7-14 recounts God's past mercies and Israel's rebellion. The Spirit is described as personally grieved.
- מָרוּ () — Verb.Qal.Perf.3p — 'rebel' | עִצְּבוּ עצב H6087 Verb.Piel.Perf.3p 'hurt/grieve/vex' | רוּחַ רוח H7307 Noun.s.Cst 'spirit of' | קָדְשׁוֹ קדשׁ H6944 Noun.ms.Abs+3ms 'his holiness'
Notes: maru (Verb Qal Perf 3p 'they rebelled') ve-itsbu (H6087, Verb Piel Perf 3p 'and they grieved/vexed') et ruach (H7307) qodsho (H6944 + 3ms suffix 'his holiness'). The Piel stem of atsab intensifies the action — they actively caused grief to his Holy Spirit. atsab means to hurt, grieve, cause pain — requiring a personal subject who can experience emotional pain. The possessive suffix ('his') connects the Spirit to YHWH while maintaining distinction. This is the OT parallel to Eph 4:30.
Three-agent sending: Adonai YHWH, his Spirit, and me¶
Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there [am] I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.
Context: Isaiah 48 — YHWH's declaration about his unique deity and his purposes. Verse 16 names three distinct agents.
Notes: Adonai (H136, PropN 'Lord') YHWH (H3068, PropN) shlachani (H7971, Verb Qal Perf 3ms + 1us suffix 'has sent me') ve-rucho (H7307 + 3ms suffix 'and his Spirit'). Three distinct agents in eight Hebrew words: (1) Adonai YHWH as sender, (2) his Spirit (rucho) as co-sender, (3) 'me' (the speaker — possibly the Servant/Messiah) as the one sent. The Spirit is a co-agent in the sending, alongside YHWH — implying personal agency distinct from both YHWH and the sent one.
My Spirit shall not always strive with man — personal contention¶
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also [is] flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Context: The antediluvian period. YHWH speaks of his Spirit contending with humanity.
Notes: YHWH (PropN) said: lo yadon (H1777, Verb Qal Impf 3ms 'shall not strive/contend') ruchi (H7307 + 1us suffix 'my spirit') ba-adam (in man) le-olam (forever). The verb din/don means to strive, contend, judge — personal contention. YHWH uses the first-person possessive 'my Spirit' — connecting the Spirit to himself while treating the Spirit as a distinct acting agent who contends with humanity.
Who will go for us? — plural divine council linked to Spirit¶
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here [am] I; send me.
Context: Isaiah's throne-room vision. YHWH uses both singular ('I') and plural ('us') in the sending commission.
Notes: Adonai (PropN) says: et-mi (whom) eshlach (H7971, Verb Qal Impf 1s 'shall I send') u-mi (and who) yelekh (H1980, Verb Qal Impf 3ms 'will go') lanu (Prep + 1up 'for us'). The switch from singular 'I' to plural 'us' within the same divine speech is significant. Acts 28:25 attributes this same scene's speech to the Holy Spirit — connecting the plural 'us' to the Spirit's presence in the divine council.
The Spirit speaketh expressly — explicit propositional speech¶
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Context: Paul's warning about latter-day apostasy. The Spirit speaks with explicit, propositional content.
Notes: to Pneuma (N-NSN) rhotos (G4490, ADV 'expressly/explicitly') legei (G3004, V-PAI-3S Pres Act Ind 'speaks') hoti — 'the Spirit says expressly that...' The adverb rhotos ('expressly, in stated terms') emphasizes that this is deliberate, articulate speech — not vague impressions. The Spirit communicates propositional content about future events.
What the Spirit saith unto the churches — direct speech to assemblies¶
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Context: The letters to the seven churches. Each letter concludes with the formula 'what the Spirit says to the churches.'
Notes: to Pneuma (N-NSN) legei (G3004, V-PAI-3S 'says') tais ekklesiais (N-DPF 'to the churches'). The Spirit speaks (legei, present active indicative) to the churches — ongoing, authoritative communication. This formula appears 7 times in Rev 2-3. The speaker is Christ in the letter body but the Spirit in the hearing formula — suggesting the Spirit mediates Christ's words, a personal intermediary role.
Jesus as parakletos — establishes the first Paraclete as a person¶
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Context: John's first epistle. Jesus is explicitly called parakletos — the same word used for the Spirit in John 14-16.
Notes: parakleton (G3875, N-ASM 'advocate/comforter') echomen (V-PAI-1P 'we have') pros ton Patera (toward the Father), Iesoun Christon dikaion ('Jesus Christ the righteous'). Jesus = parakletos. In John 14:16, Jesus promises 'another (allos) parakletos.' If the first parakletos (Jesus) is a person, and the Spirit is 'another of the same kind,' the Spirit is also a person.
Paidion (neuter) with masculine pronoun — gender override parallel¶
And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
Context: The flight to Egypt. The neuter paidion ('young child') refers to Jesus.
- παιδίον (G3813) — N-ASN — Acc Sg N (neuter) | αὐτοῦ αὐτός G846 [P-GSM] Gen Sg M (masculine — gender override) | αὐτό αὐτός G846 [P-ASN] Acc Sg N (neuter — standard agreement)
Notes: to paidion (G3813, N-ASN neuter 'the young child') ... ten metera autou (P-GSM, masculine genitive 'his mother'). The pronoun autou is masculine genitive, agreeing with the personal referent (Jesus, male) rather than the grammatical gender of paidion (neuter). However, at the end: to paidion tou apolesai auto (P-ASN neuter 'to destroy it/him'). The final auto is neuter, matching paidion grammatically. So in this verse, both masculine (autou) and neuter (auto) pronouns appear for the same neuter-gender referent. This demonstrates that gender override for personal referents IS documented in the NT, supporting the possibility (though not proof) that ekeinos could override for pneuma.
False prophet directs worship to the beast — Spirit-parody parallel¶
And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
Context: The second beast (false prophet) in Revelation 13. The parody structure mirrors the Spirit's role.
Notes: The false prophet poiei (V-PAI-3S 'makes/causes') the earth to proskunesousin (V-FAI-3P 'worship') the first beast. Parallel: the Spirit glorifies Christ (John 16:14, doxasei). The structural argument: Dragon/Beast/False Prophet mirrors Father/Son/Spirit. A personal false prophet can only parody a personal Spirit.
False prophet gives pneuma to the image — breath/spirit parody¶
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Context: The false prophet's actions: giving pneuma to the image, marking foreheads — paralleling the Spirit's life-giving and sealing work.
Notes: v.15: dounai pneuma (G4151, N-ASN 'to give spirit/breath') te eikoni — the false prophet gives pneuma to the beast's image. Parallel: the Spirit gives life (John 6:63). v.16: receive a mark (charagma) in foreheads. Parallel: the Spirit seals believers (Eph 1:13, 4:30). The parody structure requires a personal original to parody.
Quench not the Spirit — fire metaphor (anti-personhood text)¶
Quench not the Spirit.
Context: Paul's closing exhortations. 'Quench' (sbennumi) is a fire/liquid metaphor applied to the Spirit.
Notes: to Pneuma (N-ASN) me sbennute (G4570, V-PAM-2P 'do not quench'). sbennumi = to quench, extinguish (fire). This is a key anti-personhood text: you quench fire, not persons. Counter: God is called a 'consuming fire' (Deut 4:24; Heb 12:29) without negating his personhood. Metaphorical language about the Spirit's influence does not determine ontological status.
I will pour out of my Spirit — liquid metaphor¶
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Context: Peter's Pentecost sermon quoting Joel 2:28-29. The pouring-out language is an anti-personhood metaphor.
Notes: ekcheo (G1632 'I will pour out') apo tou Pneumatos mou ('of my Spirit'). The 'pour out' language sounds impersonal (liquid metaphor). Counter: (1) The text says 'pour out OF my Spirit' (partitive apo), not 'pour out my Spirit as a liquid.' (2) God himself is described as filling heaven and earth (Jer 23:24) and dwelling in believers (John 14:23) without negating personhood. (3) YHWH uses the possessive 'my Spirit' — implying relational possession.
Filled with the Holy Ghost — container/filling metaphor¶
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Context: Pentecost. The disciples are 'filled with' the Spirit — an impersonal container metaphor.
Notes: eplesthesan (G4130, V-API-3P 'they were filled') Pneumatos Hagiou. The filling metaphor sounds impersonal. Counter: (1) Christ also 'dwells in' believers' hearts (Eph 3:17) — filling/dwelling language applies to persons. (2) The same verse says 'as the Spirit GAVE them utterance' — the Spirit is the agent who gives (personal action). The impersonal metaphor coexists with personal agency in the same sentence.
Love of God shed abroad by the Holy Ghost — pour-out language¶
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Context: Paul's argument about hope in tribulation. The Spirit is the agent through whom God's love is communicated.
Notes: he agape tou Theou ekkechutai (G1632, V-RPI-3S Perf Pass 'has been poured out') en tais kardiais hemon dia (through) Pneumatos Hagiou. The love is poured out through (dia) the Spirit — the Spirit is the agent/means, not the thing poured. The Spirit mediates God's love — a personal intermediary role.
Three witnesses: Spirit, water, blood — testimony pattern¶
This is he that came by water and blood, [even] Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
Context: John's discussion of the three witnesses. The Spirit is grouped with water and blood — impersonal items.
Notes: Anti-personhood argument: Spirit listed alongside water and blood (impersonal elements). Counter: (1) All three 'bear witness' (marturountes) — testimony is a personal act, even if water and blood testify metaphorically. (2) v.6 says 'the Spirit is the one bearing witness (to marturoun), because the Spirit is truth' — the Spirit is singled out as the primary witness. (3) The Comma Johanneum (v.7) explicitly names Father, Word, and Holy Ghost — though textually disputed, the triadic pattern persists in v.8.
I will pour my spirit upon thy seed — OT liquid metaphor¶
For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
Context: YHWH's promise of restoration. The Spirit is described in parallel with water — poured out.
Notes: etsok (H3332 'I will pour') ruchi (H7307 + 1us 'my spirit') al-zarakha ('upon your seed'). The parallel with water ('pour water... pour my spirit') creates impersonal imagery. But the possessive 'my spirit' is relational, and the pouring language is metaphorical — God also 'pours out' wrath (Ezek 22:31) without making wrath a substance.
The Spirit of God hath made me — creative agency¶
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
Context: Elihu's speech. He attributes his creation to the Spirit of God.
Notes: ruach-El (Spirit of God) asatni (H6213 'has made me'). The verb asah ('to make') with the Spirit as subject — creative agency. Parallel with 'breath of the Almighty' (nishmat Shaddai) — breath and Spirit in parallelism.
Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created¶
Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.
Context: Psalm of creation and providence. The Spirit is the agent of creation and renewal.
Notes: teshalach (H7971 'you send') ruchakha (H7307 + 2ms 'your spirit') yibbarei-un (H1254 Niphal 'they are created'). The Spirit is sent forth (shalach) as an agent of creation. The personal act of sending implies a distinct agent being dispatched.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? — omnipresence¶
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
Context: David's psalm of God's omniscience and omnipresence. The Spirit's presence is equated with God's presence.
Notes: anah elek me-ruchakha (H7307 + 2ms 'from your spirit') u-anah mi-panekha (from your face/presence) ebrach. Spirit and presence (panim, 'face') are in synonymous parallelism — the Spirit IS God's personal presence. Omnipresence is a divine attribute; if the Spirit is omnipresent, the Spirit is divine.
Sevenfold Spirit — personal attributes of wisdom, understanding, counsel¶
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
Context: The Branch/Messiah prophecy. The Spirit's sevenfold endowment — each a personal attribute.
Notes: ruach YHWH (spirit of YHWH) described as: wisdom (chokmah), understanding (binah), counsel (etsah), might (geburah), knowledge (daat), fear of YHWH (yirat YHWH). These are personal intellectual and moral attributes — wisdom, counsel, and understanding are cognitive faculties that require a personal possessor.
Thy good spirit to instruct them — personal instruction¶
Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.
Context: Levites' prayer recounting Israel's history. God gave his Spirit to instruct — teaching is personal.
Notes: ruchakha (H7307 + 2ms 'your spirit') ha-tovah ('the good one') le-haskilam (H7919 Hiphil infinitive 'to instruct them'). The Spirit instructs (sakal, Hiphil = 'to cause to understand') — teaching requires a personal agent.
Testified against them by thy spirit in thy prophets¶
Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
Context: Continuation of Levites' prayer. God testified against Israel through his Spirit operating in the prophets.
Notes: va-toed (H5749 Hiphil 'you testified') ba-hem (against them) be-ruchakha (H7307 'by your spirit') be-yad neviiekha ('by the hand of your prophets'). The Spirit is the agent through whom God testifies — testimony is a personal, judicial act.
The love of the Spirit — emotional attribute¶
Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in [your] prayers to God for me;
Context: Paul's appeal for prayer. He invokes 'the love of the Spirit' as motivation.
Notes: dia tes agapes tou Pneumatos ('through the love of the Spirit'). The Spirit possesses agape (love) — an emotional/relational attribute requiring personhood. This is one of the few texts attributing love specifically to the Spirit.
Spirit of his Son crying Abba, Father¶
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Context: Paul's argument about adoption as sons. God sends the Spirit who cries out.
Notes: exapesteilen (G1821, 'sent forth') ho Theos to Pneuma tou Huiou autou ('the Spirit of his Son') eis tas kardias hemon krazon (G2896, V-PAP-ASN 'crying') Abba ho Pater. The Spirit 'cries out' (krazo) — vocal, personal utterance. The Spirit is described as the Spirit 'of his Son' — a relational designation.
Yea, saith the Spirit — direct speech¶
And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed [are] the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Context: Third angel's message context. The Spirit speaks directly, confirming the heavenly voice.
Notes: Nai, legei (G3004, V-PAI-3S 'says') to Pneuma ('the Spirit'). The Spirit speaks with an affirmative 'Yes' (nai) — a personal confirmatory utterance.
The Spirit and the bride say, Come — personal invitation¶
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Context: The closing invitation of Revelation. The Spirit and the bride issue a joint invitation.
Notes: to Pneuma kai he numphe legousin (V-PAI-3P 'say') Erchou ('Come'). The Spirit and the bride are coordinated as co-speakers (plural verb legousin) issuing a joint personal invitation. The Spirit speaks alongside the church — personal coordination.
Moved by the Holy Ghost — Spirit carries persons¶
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
Context: Peter's statement on the origin of Scripture. The Spirit is the driving force behind prophecy.
Notes: hupo Pneumatos Hagiou pheromenoi (G5342, V-PPP-NPM Pres Pass Ptcp 'being carried/borne along') elalésan (spoke) apo Theou anthropoi ('from God, men'). phero means to carry, bear along — the Spirit carries/moves the prophets. The passive pheromenoi with hupo + genitive (agent) construction = the Spirit is the personal agent.
Wind/Spirit blows where it wills — double-meaning text¶
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Context: Jesus' discourse with Nicodemus about new birth. Pneuma here can mean wind or Spirit.
Notes: to pneuma hopou thelei (G2309, V-PAI-3S 'it wills/wishes') pnei (G4154 'blows'). pneuma here operates on both levels: wind (physical) and Spirit (theological). thelei ('it wills') is a volitional verb — even if the primary referent is wind, the double meaning connects pneuma with personal willing.
Partakers of the Holy Ghost who fall away — personal betrayal language¶
For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put [him] to an open shame.
Context: Warning passage. Those who have shared in (metochos) the Holy Spirit and fall away.
Notes: metochous (G3353, 'partakers/sharers') genethentes (Aor Pass Ptcp 'having become') Pneumatos Hagiou. The word metochos means one who shares in, a partner — relational, personal language. The connection to 'crucifying the Son of God afresh' places the offense against the Spirit in the category of personal betrayal.
Body as temple of the Holy Ghost — dwelling language¶
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Context: Paul's argument against sexual immorality. The body is the Spirit's dwelling place.
Notes: naos (G3485, 'temple/sanctuary') tou Hagiou Pneumatos. Anti-personhood argument: the Spirit 'fills' a temple (impersonal). Counter: God himself dwells in the temple — dwelling language describes personal presence, not impersonal filling.
Sealed with the holy Spirit of promise — earnest metaphor¶
In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Context: Ephesians 1 — the blessings of salvation. The Spirit seals and serves as a deposit/guarantee.
Notes: esphragisthete (G4972, 'you were sealed') to Pneumati tes epangelias to Hagio ('with the Holy Spirit of promise'). The Spirit as 'earnest' (arrabon, G728 = down payment/guarantee) could sound impersonal. Counter: the sealing act is personal (a king seals with his personal seal), and the guarantee is relational — the Spirit's personal presence guarantees future redemption.
Jesus breathed on them — breath/Spirit metaphor¶
And when he had said this, he breathed on [them], and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Context: Post-resurrection appearance. Jesus breathes on the disciples and bestows the Holy Spirit.
Notes: emphusao ('breathed on') + Receive (labete) pneuma hagion. The breathing imagery echoes Gen 2:7 (God breathed life into Adam). Anti-personhood reading: the Spirit is breath. Pro-personhood reading: Jesus personally bestows the Spirit as he himself was given the Spirit (John 3:34). The verb labete ('receive') with a personal object is standard.
Paidion (neuter) referring to Jesus — Bowman gender parallel¶
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
Context: Jesus' childhood. The neuter paidion ('child') refers to the person Jesus.
Notes: to paidion (G3813, N-NSN neuter 'the child') referring to Jesus — a personal being referred to by a neuter noun. This is part of Bowman's parallel argument: if neuter grammatical gender does not negate Jesus' personhood, it cannot negate the Spirit's personhood.
Holy Ghost listed among virtues — list context argument¶
By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
Context: Paul lists his commendations. The Holy Ghost appears in a list of virtues/qualities.
Notes: en hagnotteti, en gnosei, en makrothumia, en chrestoteti, en Pneumati Hagio, en agape anupokrito. Anti-personhood argument: Spirit listed among impersonal qualities (purity, knowledge, etc.). Counter: Paul's list mixes personal and impersonal items — this is an epistolary convention, not an ontological category. 'In the Holy Spirit' describes the sphere of Paul's ministry, not an attribute of Paul.
God is a consuming fire — counter to Spirit-as-fire objection¶
For the LORD thy God [is] a consuming fire, [even] a jealous God.
Context: Moses' warning against idolatry. God is described as a consuming fire.
Notes: YHWH elohekha esh okhlah (H784/H398 'fire consuming'). God is called fire without negating his personhood. If fire imagery for God does not disprove God's personhood, fire/quenching imagery for the Spirit does not disprove the Spirit's personhood. This is the parallel-treatment test.
Do not I fill heaven and earth? — God fills, yet is personal¶
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
Context: YHWH's omnipresence declaration. God 'fills' heaven and earth.
Notes: anokhi male (H4390 'I fill'). God fills heaven and earth — the same filling/pervasion language used for the Spirit. If God's filling heaven and earth does not negate his personhood, the Spirit's filling believers does not negate the Spirit's personhood.
Christ dwell in your hearts — personal being uses dwelling language¶
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Context: Paul's prayer for the Ephesians. Christ is described as dwelling in hearts.
Notes: katoikesai (G2730 'to dwell') ton Christon en tais kardiais humon. Christ dwells in believers' hearts — the same 'dwelling/indwelling' language used for the Spirit (1 Cor 6:19). Christ's indwelling does not negate his personhood. Therefore the Spirit's indwelling does not negate the Spirit's personhood.
The Holy Ghost made you overseers — Spirit appoints church leaders¶
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Context: Paul's farewell to the Ephesian elders. The Spirit is credited with appointing church overseers.
Notes: to Pneuma to Hagion etheto (G5087, V-2AMI-3S 'has placed/appointed') humas episkopous ('you as overseers'). The Spirit appoints leaders — an authoritative, personal act of governance.
Take not thy holy spirit from me — personal relational presence¶
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Context: David's penitential psalm after his sin with Bathsheba. He pleads for the Spirit's continued presence.
Notes: ruach qodshekha (H7307/H6944 + 2ms 'your holy spirit') al-tiqqach (H3947 'do not take') mimmenni ('from me'). Parallel with 'thy presence' (panekha) — the Spirit = God's personal presence. The withdrawal of the Spirit is the withdrawal of a person, not the deactivation of a force.
The everlasting God — same aionios used for the Spirit in Heb 9:14¶
But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
Context: Paul's doxology. God is called 'everlasting' (aionios) — the same adjective applied to the Spirit in Hebrews 9:14.
Notes: tou aioniou (G166) Theou — 'the eternal God.' Same adjective aionios applied to God here and to the Spirit (pneumatos aioniou) in Heb 9:14. If the Spirit shares the same eternal attribute as God, the Spirit shares a divine characteristic.
A sin unto death — connected to unpardonable sin against the Spirit¶
If any man see his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
Context: John's discussion of sin and prayer. The 'sin unto death' likely connects to the blasphemy against the Spirit.
Notes: hamartia pros thanaton ('sin unto death'). Connected to the unforgivable sin of Matt 12:31-32 and Heb 10:26-29 — sins against the Holy Spirit that reach a point of no return.
Full OT context: Angel, Holy Spirit, YHWH — three agents¶
In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, [and] he fought against them. Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, [and] his people, [saying], Where [is] he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where [is] he that put his holy Spirit within him?
Context: Isaiah's recounting of God's dealings with Israel — three agents appear: YHWH, the Angel of his presence, and his Holy Spirit.
Notes: v.9: malakh panav ('angel of his presence/face') saved them. v.10: itsbu (H6087 Piel 'they vexed') et-ruach qodsho ('his holy spirit'). v.11: 'where is he that put his holy spirit within him?' Three distinct agents: YHWH who loves and redeems, the Angel of his presence who saves, and his Holy Spirit who can be vexed and who was put within Moses/Israel. The Spirit is possessed by YHWH ('his') yet distinct from YHWH — personal and relational.
Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit — YHWH's possessive¶
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Context: Zechariah's vision of the lampstand. YHWH declares his Spirit as the means of accomplishment.
Notes: lo ve-chayil ve-lo ve-koach ki im-be-ruchi (H7307 + 1us 'by my spirit') neum YHWH tsevaot. YHWH uses the first-person possessive 'my Spirit' — relational language implying distinct-yet-owned agency. The Spirit contrasts with impersonal might (chayil) and power (koach) — the Spirit is the personal alternative to mere force.
He shall glorify me — Spirit glorifies Christ (false prophet parallel)¶
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.
Context: Continuation of John 16:13-15 — the Spirit's Christ-glorifying ministry, paralleled by the false prophet's beast-glorifying role.
Notes: ekeinos (D-NSM) eme doxasei (G1392 V-FAI-3S 'will glorify me'). The Spirit glorifies Christ. The false prophet (Rev 13:12) causes worship of the beast. The parody requires a personal original.
Sealed with the Holy Spirit — Spirit seals (false prophet parallel)¶
In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Context: The Spirit's sealing work — marking believers as God's own. Paralleled by the false prophet's marking in Rev 13:16.
Notes: esphragisthete (G4972 'you were sealed') to Pneumati tes epangelias. The Spirit seals believers' foreheads (cf. Rev 7:3, Ezek 9:4). The false prophet marks foreheads with the beast's number (Rev 13:16). The parody of sealing with marking presupposes a personal Spirit whose work can be counterfeited.
Triadic gift distribution — Spirit, Lord, God working in parallel¶
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another [divers] kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Context: Paul's full discussion of spiritual gifts — the Spirit distributes as a sovereign personal agent.
Notes: The triadic structure (vv.4-6) and the Spirit's sovereign distribution (v.11 bouletai) combine in this passage. The Spirit is the organizing principle of the church's gifting — a role that requires intelligence, purpose, and will.
Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost — Markan parallel¶
But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
Context: Mark's parallel to Matthew 12:31-32. Blasphemy against the Spirit has no forgiveness — ever.
Notes: blasphemese (G987, V-AAS-3S 'shall blaspheme') eis to Pneuma to Hagion — 'against the Holy Spirit.' Mark uses eis (into/against) rather than Matthew's kata (against). 'Never forgiveness' (ouk echei aphesin eis ton aiona) — the most absolute formulation.
Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost — Lukan parallel¶
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
Context: Luke's parallel to Matthew 12:31-32. Same distinction between forgivable speech against the Son and unforgivable blasphemy against the Spirit.
Notes: to eis to Hagion Pneuma blasphemesanti (G987, V-AAP-DSM 'the one having blasphemed') ouk aphethesetai. Lukan form confirms the three-gospel testimony to the unforgivable nature of anti-Spirit blasphemy.
