Question

When Jesus says 'the only true God' (John 17:3) and Paul says 'one God, the Father' (1 Corinthians 8:6), do these passages exclude Jesus from deity? Examine the full chapter context of John 17 and the Shema background of 1 Corinthians 8:6.

Prior Research Summary

Seven prior studies bear directly on this question. trin-01 established that ALL creation is assigned to Christ (John 1:3, Col 1:16, Heb 1:2, 1 Cor 8:6) and that Isaiah 44:24 declares YHWH created alone — if Christ is creation's agent, he must be within YHWH's identity. trin-02 established that monos (G3441) in Mark 13:32 describes temporary incarnational limitation and that NO pre-incarnation text describes the Son as subordinate. The jesus-never-said-i-am-god study already treated John 17:3 as a difficult passage and concluded the 'only true God' contrasts with false gods, not with the Son. The elohim-plural-trinity study identified 1 Cor 8:6 as Paul 'expanding the Shema' and found that echad (H259) permits composite unity without requiring it while yachid (H3173) is NEVER applied to YHWH. The greatest-commandment-shema study confirmed Jesus affirmed the Shema in Mark 12:29. The yhwh-elohim-usage-pattern study found the NT preserves the YHWH/Elohim structure via kyrios/theos. Web research identified the Bauckham/Wright/Fee 'Christological Shema' thesis as the dominant scholarly paradigm, and Perriman's counter-argument (Psalm 110:1 background, ek/dia hierarchy, 1 Cor 15:24-28 subordination) as the strongest challenge.

Focus Areas

  1. John 17:3 — monos alethinos theos: exclusive or contrastive?: READ the library entries for G3441 (monos) at $WORD_STUDIES/G3441-mónos.md, G228 (alethinos) at $WORD_STUDIES/G228-alethinos.md, and G2316 (theos) at $WORD_STUDIES/G2316-theos.md. Run greek_parser.py --verse 'JHN 17:3' to get the full morphological parse. The key question is whether monos functions as an exclusive adjective ('only, to the exclusion of all others including the Son') or a contrastive adjective ('the genuine God as opposed to false/pagan gods'). Check 1 Thess 1:9 where 'true God' (theos alethinos) contrasts with idols — the same alethinos+theos pairing. Then examine EVERY NT occurrence where monos modifies or accompanies theos: John 17:3, 1 Tim 1:17, 1 Tim 6:15-16, Jude 1:25, Rom 16:27. Does monos in these doxologies exclude the Son, or do they praise the one true God as opposed to false gods? The kai ('and') connecting 'the only true God' with 'Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent' grammatically pairs them as the joint object of life-giving knowledge — verify this by parsing the accusative structure. Run cross_testament_parallels_v2.py --hybrid-ot and --hybrid-nt on John 17:3. Verses: John 17:3, 1 Thessalonians 1:9, 1 Timothy 1:17, 1 Timothy 6:15-16, Jude 1:25, Romans 16:27 Strong's: G3441, G228, G2316

  2. John 17 full chapter context — what the same prayer reveals about the speaker: Retrieve the FULL TEXT of John 17:1-26 from kjv.txt. Run greek_parser.py --verse on John 17:5, 17:10, 17:21, 17:22, 17:24. In v.5, the phrase te doxe he eichon pro tou ton kosmon einai para soi uses imperfect eichon (continuous past possession) plus para + dative (personal proximity) — this indicates actual, conscious, personal pre-existence, not merely a plan in God's mind. In v.10, 'All mine are thine, and thine are mine' (panta ta ema sa estin kai ta sa ema) is a mutual ownership claim — verify the possessive pronoun structure. In v.21-22, the unity formula 'that they may be one, as we are one' establishes Father-Son unity as the MODEL for believer unity — what kind of unity is this? In v.24, 'thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world' (pro kataboles kosmou) asserts pre-creation personal relationship. Read the library entry for G1391 (doxa) at $WORD_STUDIES/G1391-doxa.md. Run cross_testament_parallels_v2.py --hybrid-ot and --hybrid-nt on John 17:5. Verses: John 17:1-5, John 17:10, John 17:21-23, John 17:24, John 17:6-8, John 17:11 Strong's: G1391, G2258, G4253, G2889

  3. 1 Corinthians 8:6 and the Shema — Paul's Christological reformulation of Deuteronomy 6:4: Run greek_parser.py --verse '1CO 8:6' and also parse '1CO 8:4' and '1CO 8:5' for full context. Retrieve Deut 6:4 from kjv.txt and run hebrew_parser.py --verse 'Deu 6:4' to get the Hebrew. The Shema reads: kyrios ho theos hemon kyrios heis estin (LXX). Paul's confession reads: heis theos ho pater... kai heis kyrios Iesous Christos. The mapping is: Shema's 'heis' appears twice in Paul, distributed between theos (Father) and kyrios (Christ). Fee says Paul 'divided the Shema into two parts.' The ek/dia preposition distinction (ex hou ta panta kai hemeis eis auton / di hou ta panta kai hemeis di autou) is debated: does ek (Father as ultimate source) vs. dia (Christ as agent) indicate ontological hierarchy or complementary roles? Check whether dia is ALSO used of God's creative activity elsewhere in Paul (e.g., Rom 11:36 'of him, and through him, and to him'). Read the library entries for G2962 (kyrios) at $WORD_STUDIES/G2962-kyrios.md and H259 (echad) at $WORD_STUDIES/H259-echad.md. Test Perriman's claim that Malachi 2:10 ('Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?') is a better background — retrieve Malachi 2:10-12 and compare. Run cross_testament_parallels_v2.py --hybrid-ot and --hybrid-nt on 1 Cor 8:6. Verses: 1 Corinthians 8:4-6, Deuteronomy 6:4, Malachi 2:10, Romans 11:36, Mark 12:29-32 Strong's: G2316, G2962, G1520, G1537, G1223, H259, H3068, H430

  4. The ek/dia preposition distinction — source vs. agent or complementary divine roles?: Run greek_parser.py --verse 'ROM 11:36' to verify the text: 'For of him (ex autou), and through him (di autou), and to him (eis auton) are all things.' If Paul uses BOTH ek AND dia of God the Father in the same verse, the preposition distinction in 1 Cor 8:6 cannot establish an ontological hierarchy. Also check Heb 2:10 ('for whom [di hon] are all things, and by whom [di hou] are all things') — dia applied to God the Father. Check Col 1:16 where 'by him' (en auto), 'through him' (di autou), and 'for him' (eis auton) all apply to Christ — the same prepositions used of the Father in Rom 11:36. READ the library entry for G1096 (ginomai) at $WORD_STUDIES/G1096-ginomai.md for creation terminology. Run a search_strongs.py --verses query on G1223 (dia) to find key creation-agency verses. Verses: 1 Corinthians 8:6, Romans 11:36, Hebrews 2:10, Colossians 1:16, John 1:3 Strong's: G1537, G1223, G1519

  5. The echad (H259) composite unity question and yachid (H3173) avoidance: READ the library entries for H259 (echad) at $WORD_STUDIES/H259-echad.md and H3173 (yachid) at $WORD_STUDIES/H3173-yachiyd.md. The elohim-plural-trinity study already found that echad is 'referent-neutral' — it permits composite unity (Gen 2:24 'one flesh') without requiring it, but Moses avoided yachid (H3173, 'solitary/only') which is NEVER applied to YHWH. Run hebrew_parser.py --verse 'Deu 6:4' to parse the Shema. Run hebrew_parser.py --verse 'Gen 2:24' to verify echad in the 'one flesh' context. Search for yachid occurrences using search_strongs.py --verses H3173 to confirm it is never used of God. Also run hebrew_parser.py --verse 'Zec 14:9' — 'In that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one' — where echad describes YHWH in an eschatological context. Verses: Deuteronomy 6:4, Genesis 2:24, Zechariah 14:9 Strong's: H259, H3173

  6. John 1:1 — the anarthrous theos as qualitative predicate nominative: Run greek_parser.py --verse 'JHN 1:1' to get full morphological parsing. The structure is: (a) En arche en ho logos — 'In the beginning was the Word'; (b) kai ho logos en pros ton theon — 'and the Word was with God' (articular theon = the Father); (c) kai theos en ho logos — 'and the Word was God' (anarthrous theos in predicate position). Harner's statistical analysis (JBL 92, 1973) showed 80% of anarthrous pre-verbal predicate nominatives are QUALITATIVE — meaning 'the Word had the nature/essence of God.' Wallace confirms: 'an anarthrous pre-verbal PN is normally qualitative, sometimes definite, and only rarely indefinite.' Read the library entry for G3056 (logos) at $WORD_STUDIES/G3056-logos.md and the grammar reference for absolute ego eimi at $GRAMMAR_REF/greek/absolute-ego-eimi.md. Also parse John 1:3 ('All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made') — the creation language that connects to 1 Cor 8:6. Run cross_testament_parallels_v2.py --hybrid-ot and --hybrid-nt on John 1:1. Verses: John 1:1-3, John 1:14, John 1:18 Strong's: G2316, G3056, G1510, G1096

  7. John 20:28 — Thomas's confession as the climax of Johannine Christology: Run greek_parser.py --verse 'JHN 20:28' to get the morphological parse. The phrase ho kyrios mou kai ho theos mou uses the nominative case for both kyrios and theos (rather than vocative), but 'said to Him' (eipen auto) explicitly indicates Thomas addressed Jesus directly. Both nouns have the article (ho), making them definite — Thomas is not saying 'a god' but 'THE God of me.' Jesus's response in v.29 ('Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed') affirms rather than corrects the confession. Read the library entry for G2962 (kyrios) at $WORD_STUDIES/G2962-kyrios.md. This is what Harris calls 'the crowning christological affirmation of the Fourth Gospel.' Also note that 1 John 5:20 uses the same 'true God' language — run greek_parser.py --verse '1JN 5:20' to verify whether houtos refers to Jesus Christ (nearest antecedent) or the Father. Verses: John 20:28-29, 1 John 5:20 Strong's: G2316, G2962, G228

  8. Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1, and the Granville Sharp rule — calling Jesus theos: Run greek_parser.py --verse 'TIT 2:13' to parse tou megalou theou kai soteros hemon Iesou Christou. Sharp's rule (1798): when two singular, personal nouns appear under one article linked by kai, they designate the same individual. The article tou appears only once before theou, and per Sharp's rule both theou and soteros refer to the same person: Jesus Christ. Run greek_parser.py --verse '2PE 1:1' for the parallel construction tou theou hemon kai soteros Iesou Christou. Evaluate the counter-arguments: Winer warned against dogmatism; Moulton-Turner noted Koine sometimes lacks a second article for multiple individuals. However, Wallace notes Sharp's rule has NO clear NT exception for two singular, personal, non-proper nouns. Search semantic_grammar.py for 'Granville Sharp' or 'article noun kai noun' in Greek grammars for textbook support. Also parse Rom 9:5 — run greek_parser.py --verse 'ROM 9:5' to examine the participial clause ho on epi panton theos eulogetos and whether it naturally applies to Christ. Verses: Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1, Romans 9:5 Strong's: G2316, G4990, G2962, G3173

  9. OT YHWH exclusivity texts and their NT application to Jesus: Retrieve Isaiah 44:6, 44:24, 45:5-6, 45:21-23, 43:10-11 from kjv.txt. Run hebrew_parser.py --verse on Isa 44:24 to verify lebaddi ('by myself alone'). Then trace the NT applications: (1) Phil 2:10-11 applies Isa 45:23 ('every knee shall bow') to Jesus — run greek_parser.py --verse 'PHP 2:10' and 'PHP 2:11'. (2) Rev 1:17 and 22:13 apply Isa 44:6 ('first and last') to Jesus — retrieve these verses. (3) Heb 1:10-12 applies Ps 102:25-27 (YHWH as creator) to the Son — run greek_parser.py --verse 'HEB 1:10'. (4) John 12:41 says Isaiah 'saw his glory, and spake of him' — attributing Isaiah's vision of YHWH (Isa 6) to Christ. READ the library entry for H3068 (YHWH) at $WORD_STUDIES/H3068-yhwh.md. Run cross_testament_parallels_v2.py --hybrid-nt on Isaiah 45:23 to find all NT allusions. Verses: Isaiah 44:6, Isaiah 44:24, Isaiah 45:5-6, Isaiah 45:21-23, Isaiah 43:10-11, Philippians 2:10-11, Revelation 1:8, Revelation 22:13, Hebrews 1:8-12, John 12:41 Strong's: H3068, H430, H259, G2316, G2962

  10. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 — eschatological submission and deity: Run greek_parser.py --verse '1CO 15:28' to parse hotan de hupotagē auto ta panta tote kai autos ho huios hupotagesetai. The trin-02 study found that hotan...tote with future passive hupotagēsetai indicates a CHANGE of state (future transition), not ongoing subordination. READ the library entry for G5293 (hupotasso) at $WORD_STUDIES/G5293-hupotasso.md. The key question is whether functional/economic submission to the Father in the eschaton negates ontological deity, or whether it parallels the incarnational self-emptying of Phil 2:5-11. If Phil 2 describes the pattern 'equality with God → voluntary self-emptying → exaltation,' then 15:28 may describe the reverse pattern: 'mediatorial kingdom → hand-back → restored equal glory.' Compare with John 17:5 where Jesus requests restoration of pre-incarnation glory — the same movement from incarnational mission back to pre-incarnation state. Also parse 1 Cor 15:24-25 to understand the structure: the Son destroys all enemies FIRST, then delivers the kingdom. Verses: 1 Corinthians 15:24-28, Philippians 2:5-11, John 17:5 Strong's: G5293, G2758, G3444, G2470

  11. Psalm 110:1 — kyrios for YHWH or for a human king?: Run hebrew_parser.py --verse 'Psa 110:1' to parse ne'um YHWH la'adoni ('The LORD said unto my lord'). The LXX renders this as eipen ho kyrios to kyrio mou — two different uses of kyrios. But the first kyrios = YHWH (the divine name), and the second kyrios = adon (the human lord/master). Perriman argues Jesus's kyrios title derives from the second (adon = exalted human king), not the first (YHWH). But check: does the NT ever apply to Jesus texts where kyrios MUST mean YHWH? Yes — Phil 2:10-11 (citing Isa 45:23 where the speaker is YHWH), Rom 10:13 (citing Joel 2:32 'whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD [YHWH] shall be saved'), Heb 1:10 (citing Ps 102:25 where the speaker is YHWH). If NT writers apply YHWH-kyrios texts to Jesus, the kyrios of 1 Cor 8:6 is not merely Ps 110:1's adon. READ the library entry for G2962 (kyrios) at $WORD_STUDIES/G2962-kyrios.md. Retrieve Rom 10:13 and Joel 2:32 for comparison. Verses: Psalm 110:1, Philippians 2:10-11, Romans 10:13, Hebrews 1:10-12, Joel 2:32 Strong's: G2962, H3068, H136

  12. The Johannine en/egeneto verb distinction — uncreated existence vs. created becoming: Run greek_parser.py --verse 'JHN 1:1', 'JHN 1:2', 'JHN 1:3'. In v.1-2, the Word 'was' (en, imperfect of eimi G1510 — continuous past existence). In v.3, all things 'were made' (egeneto, aorist of ginomai G1096 — came into being at a point). The Logos 'was' (en) while everything else 'became' (egeneto). The same pattern appears in John 8:58: 'Before Abraham was (genesthai, aorist infinitive — came into being), I am (ego eimi, present tense — timeless being).' READ the library entries for G1510 (eimi) at $WORD_STUDIES/G1510-eimi.md and G1096 (ginomai) at $WORD_STUDIES/G1096-ginomai.md and the grammar reference for absolute ego eimi at $GRAMMAR_REF/greek/absolute-ego-eimi.md. This verb distinction was identified in trin-01 as placing Christ on the 'uncreated side.' Verses: John 1:1-3, John 8:58 Strong's: G1510, G1096, G2258

  1. John 17:3 establishes the personality (distinct personhood) of both Father and Son — not excluding the Son from deity. EGW affirms the Father as 'the only true God' while simultaneously affirming Christ as 'equal with God' and 'one with the eternal Father... one in nature, in character, and in purpose.' (Source: EGW)
  2. Verify: Verify whether John 17's full chapter context (v.5 pre-existent glory, v.10 mutual ownership, v.21-22 divine unity, v.24 pre-creation love) supports the 'distinct persons sharing divine nature' reading.
  3. 'He declared that He had no existence separate from the Father' — referencing John 10:30 or John 14:10, claiming unity-without-separation. (Source: EGW)
  4. Verify: Verify against the Greek of John 10:30 (hen esmen) and John 14:10 (ego en to patri kai ho pater en emoi).
  5. 'One with the Father before the foundation of the world' — referencing John 17:5, 24 as evidence that 'only true God' does not exclude the Son. (Source: EGW)
  6. Verify: Parse John 17:5 (imperfect eichon + para soi) and 17:24 (pro kataboles kosmou) for pre-creation relationship evidence.

  14. Verify: Test whether 'divided' vs. 'expanded' accurately describes the textual relationship between Deut 6:4 LXX and 1 Cor 8:6.
  15. Paul does NOT quote the Shema verbatim in 8:4 — already drops kyrios. Better OT background may be Malachi 2:10-12. Kyrios for Jesus derives from Psalm 110:1 enthronement, not YHWH identity. 1 Cor 15:24-28 is incompatible with full inclusion in deity. (Source: Perriman (web research))
  16. Verify: Verify: (1) Does 8:4 drop kyrios? Parse it. (2) Compare Mal 2:10 structure with 1 Cor 8:6. (3) Test whether kyrios for Jesus is EVER applied from YHWH-only OT texts (Isa 45:23, Joel 2:32). (4) Examine 1 Cor 15:24-28 for compatibility with Phil 2:5-11 kenosis framework.
  17. monos alethinos theos contrasts Father with false/pagan gods, not with the Son — parallels 1 Thess 1:9. (Source: Cross Theology (web research))

  45. External corpus verification directives:

  46. John 17:3 establishes the personality (distinct personhood) of both Father and Son — not excluding the Son from deity. EGW affirms the Father as 'the only true God' while simultaneously affirming Christ as 'equal with God' and 'one with the eternal Father... one in nature, in character, and in purpose.' (EGW) — Verify whether John 17's full chapter context (v.5 pre-existent glory, v.10 mutual ownership, v.21-22 divine unity, v.24 pre-creation love) supports the 'distinct persons sharing divine nature' reading.
  47. 'He declared that He had no existence separate from the Father' — referencing John 10:30 or John 14:10, claiming unity-without-separation. (EGW) — Verify against the Greek of John 10:30 (hen esmen) and John 14:10 (ego en to patri kai ho pater en emoi).
  48. 'One with the Father before the foundation of the world' — referencing John 17:5, 24 as evidence that 'only true God' does not exclude the Son. (EGW) — Parse John 17:5 (imperfect eichon + para soi) and 17:24 (pro kataboles kosmou) for pre-creation relationship evidence.
  49. 'God is here called the only true God, to distinguish him from the false gods of the heathen, which were counterfeiters and pretenders, not from the person of the Son' (Matthew Henry (via EGW corpus)) — Verify by examining every NT use of monos+theos and alethinos+theos to test whether the contrast is consistently with false gods.
  50. Paul produced a 'Christian version of the Shema' in 1 Cor 8:6, including Jesus within the unique divine identity — 'He is identifying Jesus as the Lord whom the Shema affirms to be one.' (Bauckham (web research)) — Verify by comparing Deut 6:4 LXX word-by-word with 1 Cor 8:6 Greek to test whether Paul uses every word of the Shema.
  51. 'Paul has placed Jesus within an explicit statement of the doctrine that Israel's God is the one and only God, the creator of the world.' (Wright (web research)) — Verify that 1 Cor 8:6 creation language (ek/dia ta panta) genuinely parallels the Shema's monotheistic scope.
  52. Paul 'divided the Shema into two parts, with theos now referring to the Father, and kyrios referring to Jesus Christ.' (Fee (web research)) — Test whether 'divided' vs. 'expanded' accurately describes the textual relationship between Deut 6:4 LXX and 1 Cor 8:6.
  53. (Perriman (web research)) — Verify: (1) Does 8:4 drop kyrios? Parse it. (2) Compare Mal 2:10 structure with 1 Cor 8:6. (3) Test whether kyrios for Jesus is EVER applied from YHWH-only OT texts (Isa 45:23, Joel 2:32). Additional Research Instructions

Critical Methodology Notes

  1. Deut 6:4 LXX mapping: Retrieve the LXX text of Deut 6:4 and lay it alongside 1 Cor 8:6 word-by-word. Document EVERY word that matches and every word that differs. This is the foundation for evaluating whether Paul 'split the Shema.'

  2. Monos+theos exhaustive check: Find EVERY NT verse where monos (G3441) or monon (G3440) appears in connection with theos (G2316). For each, determine: does monos function to exclude all other persons from deity, or to contrast the true God with false gods? This is the decisive data for John 17:3.

  3. Perriman's counter-arguments require specific tests: (a) Does Paul drop kyrios in 1 Cor 8:4? Parse it. (b) Is Mal 2:10's structure closer to 1 Cor 8:6 than Deut 6:4's? Compare. (c) Is kyrios for Jesus EVER drawn from a text where it MUST mean YHWH (not just adon)? Check Isa 45:23/Phil 2:10-11, Joel 2:32/Rom 10:13. (d) Is 1 Cor 15:24-28 compatible with Phil 2:5-11's kenosis framework?

  4. Both sides represented: Ensure the research includes passages that COMPLICATE the deity reading (1 Cor 15:24-28, Mark 13:32, John 14:28) alongside those that support it. The analysis must address these honestly.

  5. Grammar verification: For John 1:1c, Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1, and Romans 9:5, the Greek grammar IS the argument. Run the parser and document the morphological evidence — this is not a case where 'the text says X' is sufficient; the morphological codes matter.

  6. EGW and web research claims are LEADS: Every claim from external sources (EGW, Bauckham, Wright, Fee, Perriman, Wallace, Harris, Metzger) must be verified against the biblical text using tools. The analysis agent should evaluate only biblical evidence.
