H6663 — tsadaq (צָדַק) — CORE WORD

Original: צָדַק Transliteration: tsadaq Pronunciation: tsaw-dak Part of Speech: verb Definition: A primitive root; to be (causatively, make) right (in a moral or forensic sense): cleanse, clear self, (be, do) just(-ice, -ify, -ify self), (be turn to) righteous(-ness). Total Occurrences: 54 (KJV), 41 (BLB count)

Critical: The ONLY Niphal in Daniel 8:14

The form in Dan 8:14 is Niphal Perfect 3ms — passive: "shall be vindicated/justified." This is the ONLY Niphal occurrence of tsadaq in the entire OT. Hebrew parser confirms:

נִצְדַּק צדק Verb.Niphal.Perf.3ms be just

Every other occurrence of tsadaq uses Qal (be just), Piel (declare just), Hiphil (declare righteous/justify), or Hithpael (justify oneself). Daniel created a unique passive form — the sanctuary does not vindicate itself; it receives vindication from an external verdict.

KJV "Cleansed" — Why This Unique Translation?

Daniel 8:14 is the sole instance in the entire KJV where tsadaq (H6663) is rendered "cleansed." In 53 other occurrences, it is always translated with justice/righteousness vocabulary (justified, just, righteous, justify, etc.). The KJV translators likely followed the Latin Vulgate's influence: Jerome translated the Hebrew with "mundabitur" (shall be cleansed), and the KJV translators, though working from Hebrew, were influenced by the Vulgate tradition and the LXX's katharisthesetai in the Theodotion version. The standard LXX (Old Greek) used dikaiothesatai (shall be justified) — confirming the forensic meaning.

LXX Translation (Greek Septuagint)

The primary LXX translation of tsadaq is dikaioo (G1344) with PMI score of 26.99 — the highest co-occurrence by far. This confirms the forensic/legal semantic field.

Top LXX mappings for H6663: | Greek Word | Strong's | PMI Score | Meaning | |-----------|----------|-----------|---------| | dikaioo (δικαιόω) | G1344 | 26.99 | to justify, declare righteous | | dikaios (δίκαιος) | G1342 | 17.16 | righteous, just | | amemptos (ἄμεμπτος) | G273 | 12.17 | blameless | | krino (κρίνω) | G2919 | 10.49 | to judge, decide |

Key Verses with tsadaq

Forensic/courtroom uses: - Job 9:2 "How should man be just [yitsdaq, Qal] with God?" — forensic question - Job 25:4 "How then can man be justified [yitsdaq, Qal] with God?" — same forensic question - Job 40:8 "Wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous [titsdaq, Qal]?" — zero-sum problem - Psa 51:4 "That thou mightest be justified [titsdaq, Qal] when thou speakest" — GOD vindicated - Isa 43:26 "Declare thou, that thou mayest be justified [titsdaq, Qal]" — forensic invitation - Isa 53:11 "My righteous [tsaddiq] servant justify [yatsdiq, Hiphil] many" — the hinge verse

Daniel's uses: - Dan 8:14 nitsdaq (Niphal) — sanctuary vindicated (UNIQUE form) - Dan 12:3 matsdiqe — "they that turn to righteousness" (Hiphil participle)

H2891 — taher (טָהֵר) — CONTRAST: Cleansing Vocabulary

Original: טָהֵר Transliteration: taher Part of Speech: verb Definition: A primitive root; properly, to be bright; i.e. (by implication) to be pure (physical sound, clear, unadulterated; Levitically, uncontaminated; morally, innocent or holy): be (make, make self, pronounce) clean, cleanse (self), purge, purify. Total Occurrences: 115 (KJV), 94 (BLB)

Day of Atonement Usage

  • Lev 16:19 "and cleanse it [taher]" — used for cleansing the altar
  • Lev 16:30 "to cleanse you [letaher], that ye may be clean [titharu, Qal Impf 2mp]" — purpose of DOA

Hebrew Parser Output for Lev 16:30

יְכַפֵּר כפר Verb.Piel.Impf.3ms cover [= make atonement]
לְטַהֵר טהר Verb.Piel.InfCon be clean [= to cleanse]
תִּטְהָרוּ טהר Verb.Qal.Impf.2mp be clean [= you shall be clean]

Critical observation: Lev 16:30 uses BOTH kaphar AND taher. The sequence is: kaphar (make atonement) → letaher (to cleanse) → titharu (you shall be clean). The DOA's purpose is stated in ritual vocabulary. Daniel could have used taher — he chose tsadaq instead.

Why Daniel Did NOT Use taher

  • taher occurs 94+ times in the OT, primarily in Leviticus (ritual cleansing)
  • It is the standard word for purification from contamination
  • Its semantic domain is ritual/ceremonial, not forensic/legal
  • Daniel's choice of tsadaq over taher signals a deliberate shift from ritual to forensic vocabulary

H3722 — kaphar (כָּפַר) — CONTRAST: Atonement Vocabulary

Original: כָּפַר Transliteration: kaphar Part of Speech: verb Definition: A primitive root; to cover (specifically with bitumen); figuratively, to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel: appease, make (an atonement, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, purge (away), put off, (make) reconcile(-liation). Total Occurrences: 130 (KJV), 102 (BLB)

Day of Atonement Usage (Dominant in Lev 16)

kaphar appears 16 times in Lev 16 alone (vv.6,10,11,16[×2],17[×2],18,20,24[×2],27,30,32,33[×3],34) — this is THE DOA verb.

Key DOA Verses

  • Lev 16:16 "he shall make an atonement [kaphar] for the holy place"
  • Lev 16:30 "shall the priest make an atonement [yekhapper] for you, to cleanse you [letaher]"
  • Lev 16:33 "he shall make an atonement [kaphar] for the holy sanctuary"

The kaphar → tsadaq Progression

Daniel 9:24 uses BOTH words:

ulekapper (ולכפר) = to make reconciliation [kaphar, Piel InfCon]
tsedeq (צדק) = righteousness [noun from tsadaq root]
olamim (עלמים) = everlasting

The sequence in Dan 9:24: "to make reconciliation [kaphar] for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness [tsedeq]" — atonement (process) produces righteousness (result).

Why Daniel Did NOT Use kaphar in 8:14

  • kaphar describes the MEANS (atonement/covering)
  • tsadaq describes the RESULT (vindication/justification)
  • Dan 8:14 announces the result, not the process
  • Dan 9:24 bridges both: kaphar (the process) leads to tsedeq (the result)

H6664 — tsedeq (צֶדֶק) — Righteousness/Justice

Original: צֶדֶק Transliteration: tsedeq Part of Speech: noun masculine Definition: The right (natural, moral or legal); also (abstractly) equity or (figuratively) prosperity: just, justice, righteous(-ness). Total Occurrences: 119

Critical Connection: Daniel 9:24

Hebrew parser output:

צֶדֶק צדק Noun.ms.Cst justice
עֹלָמִים עולם Noun.mp.Abs eternity
"Everlasting righteousness" (tsedeq olamim) — from the same root as Dan 8:14's nitsdaq.

Psalm 119:142 — The Vocabulary Chain

Hebrew parser output:

צִדְקָתְךָ צדקה Noun.fs.Abs.+2ms justice
צֶדֶק צדק Noun.ms.Abs justice
לְעֹולָם עולם Noun.ms.Abs eternity
תֹורָתְךָ תורה Noun.fs.Abs.+2ms instruction
אֱמֶת אמת Noun.fs.Abs trustworthiness

"Thy righteousness [tsidqatka] is an everlasting righteousness [tsedeq le-olam], and thy law [toratka] is the truth [emeth]."

This verse chains: tsedeq + olam + emeth = the vocabulary of BOTH Dan 8:14 (tsadaq + qodesh) AND Dan 9:24 (tsedeq + olamim). The Psalmist's phrase "everlasting righteousness" is verbally identical to Dan 9:24's tsedeq olamim. And the parallel "thy law is the truth [emeth]" connects to Dan 8:12's "cast down the truth [emeth] to the ground."

G1344 — dikaioo (δικαιόω) — NT Vindication/Justification

Original: δικαιόω Transliteration: dikaioo Part of Speech: verb Definition: From dikaios; to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent: free, justify. Total Occurrences: 43 (NT), 40 (BLB)

Hebrew Source (Reverse Mapping)

The primary Hebrew source behind dikaioo is tsadaq (H6663) with PMI 26.99 — confirming a direct translation equivalence across the LXX bridge.

Key NT Occurrences

  • Rom 3:4 "That thou mightest be justified [dikaiothes]" — quoting Psa 51:4's titsdaq
  • Rom 3:24 "Being justified [dikaioumenoi] freely by his grace"
  • Rom 3:26 "that he might be just [dikaion], and the justifier [dikaiounta] of him which believeth"
  • Rom 8:33 "It is God that justifieth [dikaion]"

G1342 — dikaios (δίκαιος) — Righteous/Just

Original: δίκαιος Transliteration: dikaios Part of Speech: adjective Total Occurrences: 68

Revelation's Vindication Declarations

Greek parser confirms dikaios in all three eschatological vindication statements:

Rev 15:3: δίκαιαι (dikaiai, Nom Pl F) — "just...are thy ways" Rev 16:5: Δίκαιος (Dikaios, Nom Sg M) — "Thou art righteous, O Lord" Rev 16:7: δίκαιαι (dikaiai, Nom Pl F) — "righteous are thy judgments" Rev 19:2: δίκαιαι (dikaiai, Nom Pl F) — "righteous are his judgments"

The Greek dikaios = Hebrew tsaddiq (H6662, from tsadaq root) — the same word family as Dan 8:14's nitsdaq. Revelation's cosmic vindication declarations use the Greek equivalent of Daniel's Hebrew.

G228 — alethinos (ἀληθινός) — True/Genuine

Original: ἀληθινός Transliteration: alethinos Part of Speech: adjective Total Occurrences: 15

Revelation's Paired Usage with dikaios

  • Rev 15:3 "just [dikaiai] and true [alethinai] are thy ways"
  • Rev 16:7 "true [alethinai] and righteous [dikaiai] are thy judgments"
  • Rev 19:2 "true [alethinai] and righteous [dikaiai] are his judgments"

Connection to Hebrew emeth (H571)

The Greek alethinos corresponds to Hebrew emeth (אמת, trustworthiness/truth) — the same word used in: - Dan 8:12 "it cast down the truth [emeth] to the ground" - Psa 119:142 "thy law is the truth [emeth]"

So the pairing dikaios + alethinos in Revelation = tsadaq + emeth in Daniel/Psalms. The little horn "cast down the truth [emeth]" (Dan 8:12); Revelation declares "true [alethinos] and righteous [dikaios] are His judgments" — the exact reversal.
