Exodus 29:38 — The Tamid Ordinance

Hebrew: וְזֶ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כְּבָשִׂ֧ים בְּנֵֽי־שָׁנָ֛ה שְׁנַ֥יִם לַיֹּ֖ום תָּמִֽיד׃

KEY OBSERVATION: תָּמִיד functions as a noun "continuity" — literally "two young rams, sons of a year, two, for the day — continuity." It modifies the entire phrase adverbially.

Exodus 29:42 — Olat Tamid (Continual Burnt Offering)

Hebrew: עֹלַ֤ת תָּמִיד֙ לְדֹרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם פֶּ֥תַח אֹֽהֶל־מֹועֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה

KEY: עֹלַת תָּמִיד = "burnt-offering of continuity" — a construct chain. The burnt offering belongs to the category of continuity/perpetuity.

NOTE: "where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee" (אִוָּעֵ֤ד, Niphal of יעד "appoint") — God appointed Himself to meet at the place of the continual burnt offering. The tamid is the meeting point.

KEY: The continual burnt offering was "ordained at mount Sinai" — its origin is from God's own command at the foundational covenant moment. "A fire offering to YHWH" — literally the daily sacrifice ascends to God.

Exodus 30:7 — Morning Incense

Hebrew: וְהִקְטִ֥יר עָלָ֛יו אַהֲרֹ֖ן קְטֹ֣רֶת סַמִּ֑ים בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֗קֶר בְּהֵיטִיבֹ֛ו אֶת־הַנֵּרֹ֖ת יַקְטִירֶֽנָּה

KEY: בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֗קֶר "in the morning, in the morning" — distributive repetition meaning "every morning" or "morning by morning." The same grammatical pattern appears in Lev 6:5 (BHSA) for the fire tending.

NOTE: בְּהֵיטִיבֹ֛ו אֶת־הַנֵּרֹ֖ת "when he makes good the lamps" — incense burning is SIMULTANEOUS with lamp tending. These two daily acts are bound together.

Exodus 30:8 — Evening Incense (Perpetual)

Hebrew: וּבְהַעֲלֹ֨ת אַהֲרֹ֧ן אֶת־הַנֵּרֹ֛ת בֵּ֥ין הָעֲרְבַּ֖יִם יַקְטִירֶ֑נָּה קְטֹ֧רֶת תָּמִ֛יד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה

KEY: בֵּ֥ין הָעֲרְבַּ֖יִם "between the evenings" (DUAL form) = twilight, the time between sunset and dark. The daily sacrifice and incense use this same dual-evening terminology.

KEY: קְטֹ֧רֶת תָּמִ֛יד "incense of continuity" — same construct pattern as עֹלַת תָּמִיד. The incense is not occasional but perpetual, an unbroken chain "before YHWH throughout your generations."

Leviticus 6:5 (BHSA) = KJV 6:12 — The Fire on the Altar

Hebrew: וְהָאֵ֨שׁ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֤חַ תּֽוּקַד־בֹּו֙ לֹ֣א תִכְבֶּ֔ה וּבִעֵ֨ר עָלֶ֧יהָ הַכֹּהֵ֛ן עֵצִ֖ים בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֑קֶר

בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֑קֶר בקר Noun.ms (repeated) morning morning

KEY: תּֽוּקַד (Hophal, "shall be MADE to burn") — passive causative. The fire is caused to burn by an outside agent (the priest), but the command is divine. לֹ֣א תִכְבֶּ֔ה ("it shall NOT go out") — emphatic negative with imperfect = absolute prohibition.

Leviticus 6:6 (BHSA) = KJV 6:13 — Fire Perpetual, Never Goes Out

Hebrew: אֵ֗שׁ תָּמִ֛יד תּוּקַ֥ד עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ לֹ֥א תִכְבֶֽה

Hebrew Lemma Parsing Gloss
אֵ֗שׁ אשׁ Noun.s.Abs fire

עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ על+ה+מזבח Prep+Art+Noun.ms upon the altar
לֹ֥א לא Neg not
תִכְבֶֽה כבה Verb.Qal.Impf.3fs shall go out

KEY: אֵ֗שׁ תָּמִ֛יד = "fire of continuity" — the fire itself is characterized by tamid. The sentence is a chiasm: Fire-continuity / shall-burn / upon-the-altar / not / shall-go-out. Beginning with "fire of continuity" and ending with "not go out" creates an envelope structure emphasizing the unbreakable nature of this command.

Daniel 8:11 — The Tamid Taken Away

Hebrew: וְעַ֥ד שַֽׂר־הַצָּבָ֖א הִגְדִּ֑יל וּמִמֶּ֨נּוּ֙ הוּרַ֣ם הַתָּמִ֔יד וְהֻשְׁלַ֖ךְ מְכֹ֥ון מִקְדָּשֹֽׁו

מְכֹ֥ון מכון Noun.ms.Cst site/foundation
מִקְדָּשֹֽׁו מקדשׁ Noun.ms+3ms his sanctuary

KEY: הַתָּמִ֔יד "THE tamid" — with the article, functioning as a substantive noun, not an adjective or adverb. It refers to THE institution of continual ministry, not merely "the daily sacrifice." The word "sacrifice" does not appear in the Hebrew — KJV adds it in italics.

KEY: הוּרַ֣ם (Hophal of רום "to be high/exalted") — passive, "was removed/taken up/lifted away." The continual ministry was forcibly taken away from the Prince of the host.

Daniel 12:11 — The Tamid Removed and Abomination Set Up

Hebrew: וּמֵעֵת֙ הוּסַ֣ר הַתָּמִ֔יד וְלָתֵ֖ת שִׁקּ֣וּץ שֹׁמֵ֑ם

שִׁקּ֣וּץ שׁקוץ Noun.ms.Abs abomination/idol
שֹׁמֵ֑ם שׁמם Verb.Qal.Ptcp.ms desolating

KEY: Different verb from Dan 8:11 — here הוּסַ֣ר (Hophal of סור "turn aside") rather than הוּרַ֣ם (Hophal of רום "lift up"). Both are passive: the tamid is acted upon, not the agent. The continuity is REPLACED by the abomination — the removal of the true is accompanied by the substitution of the false.
