Revelation 21 (Full Chapter) -- The New Jerusalem¶
21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God. 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light [was] like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; 21:12 And had a wall great and high, [and] had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are [the names] of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 21:15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. 21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. 21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred [and] forty [and] four cubits, [according to] the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. 21:18 And the building of the wall of it was [of] jasper: and the city [was] pure gold, like unto clear glass. 21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city [were] garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation [was] jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; 21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. 21:21 And the twelve gates [were] twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city [was] pure gold, as it were transparent glass. 21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof. 21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. 21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Revelation 22:1-5 -- River of Life, Tree of Life, No More Curse¶
22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, [was there] the tree of life, which bare twelve [manner of] fruits, [and] yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree [were] for the healing of the nations. 22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads. 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Context (Rev 22:6-17):
22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings [are] faithful and true... 22:14 Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Leviticus 23:26-44 (Full Chapter Context: Fall Feasts) -- DOA through Tabernacles¶
23:26 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23:27 Also on the tenth [day] of this seventh month [there shall be] a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. 23:28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it [is] a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God. 23:29 For whatsoever soul [it be] that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. 23:30 And whatsoever soul [it be] that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. 23:31 Ye shall do no manner of work: [it shall be] a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 23:32 It [shall be] unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth [day] of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath. 23:33 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23:34 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month [shall be] the feast of tabernacles [for] seven days unto the LORD. 23:35 On the first day [shall be] an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work [therein]. 23:36 Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it [is] a solemn assembly; [and] ye shall do no servile work [therein]. 23:37 These [are] the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim [to be] holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day: 23:38 Beside the sabbaths of the LORD, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto the LORD. 23:39 Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day [shall be] a sabbath, and on the eighth day [shall be] a sabbath. 23:40 And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. 23:41 And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. [It shall be] a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month. 23:42 Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths: 23:43 That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I [am] the LORD your God. 23:44 And Moses declared unto the children of Israel the feasts of the LORD.
Note: DOA = Tishri 10 (v.27); Tabernacles = Tishri 15 (v.34). Five-day gap between judgment/purification and celebration/dwelling.
Revelation 7:9-17 (Full Chapter Context) -- Proleptic Tabernacles Scene¶
7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 7:2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God... 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: [and there were] sealed an hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 7:10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 7:11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and [about] the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 7:12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. 7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 7:15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. 7:16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Tabernacles connections: Palm branches (7:9, cf. Lev 23:40), "shall dwell/tabernacle" (skenosei, 7:15), shelter from heat (7:16, cf. Isa 4:6), living fountains of waters (7:17), tears wiped (7:17, cf. 21:4), universal gathering (7:9, cf. Zec 14:16).
John 1:1-18 -- The Incarnation as Tabernacles Inauguration¶
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 1:9 [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 1:16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, [but] grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared [him].
Key: v.14 "dwelt" = ἐσκήνωσεν (eskenosen), Aorist of σκηνόω (skenoo, G4637), literally "tabernacled." "We beheld his glory" -- Shekinah glory in tabernacle form.
John 7:37-52 -- Living Water at the Feast of Tabernacles¶
7:2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. 7:14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 7:37 In the last day, that great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet [given]; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Key: Jesus speaks on "the last day, that great day of the feast" -- the climax of Tabernacles. The water ceremony (Isa 12:3 connection) is fulfilled in Christ. "Rivers of living water" -> Rev 22:1 "river of water of life."
Zechariah 14:1-21 (Full Chapter) -- Eschatological Tabernacles¶
14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives... 14:5 ...and the LORD my God shall come, [and] all the saints with thee. 14:7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, [that] at evening time it shall be light. 14:8 And it shall be in that day, [that] living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. 14:10 All the land shall be turned as a plain... 14:11 And [men] shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. 14:16 And it shall come to pass, [that] every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. 14:17 And it shall be, [that] whoso will not come up of [all] the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. 14:18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that [have] no [rain]; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 14:19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 14:20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 14:21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts... and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.
Key: The ONLY feast explicitly projected into the eschatological age. "Living waters" from Jerusalem (14:8) -> Rev 22:1. Universal worship (14:16) -> Rev 7:9, 21:3. "No more destruction" (14:11) -> "no more curse" (Rev 22:3). "HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD" on everything (14:20-21) -> all holy in the New Jerusalem.
Isaiah 4:1-6 (Full Chapter) -- Purification Then Sukkah Shelter¶
4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach. 4:2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth [shall be] excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. 4:3 And it shall come to pass, [that he that is] left in Zion, and [he that] remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, [even] every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem: 4:4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. 4:5 And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory [shall be] a defence. 4:6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.
Key: v.4 "spirit of judgment and spirit of burning" = DOA purification imagery. v.6 "tabernacle" = סֻכָּה (sukkah, H5521), the SAME word used in Lev 23:34,42 for the Feast of Tabernacles. The sequence: purification (v.4) THEN sukkah shelter (v.6) preserves the DOA-to-Tabernacles order. Compare Rev 7:15-16 (shelter from heat/sun).
Ezekiel 47:1-12 -- The River from the Temple¶
47:1 Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward... 47:2 Then brought he me out... and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. 47:3 ...he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters [were] to the ancles. 47:4 Again he measured a thousand... the waters [were] to the knees... the waters [were] to the loins. 47:5 Afterward he measured a thousand; [and it was] a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in... 47:7 Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river [were] very many trees on the one side and on the other. 47:8 Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country... the waters shall be healed. 47:9 ...every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live... 47:12 And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
Key: River from temple (Ezk 47:1) -> River from throne (Rev 22:1). Trees on both sides (47:7,12) -> tree of life on either side of river (Rev 22:2). "Leaf for medicine" (47:12) -> "leaves for the healing of the nations" (Rev 22:2). "New fruit according to his months" (47:12) -> "twelve manner of fruits... every month" (Rev 22:2).
Covenant Formula Chain¶
Exodus 6:7¶
And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
Exodus 29:45-46¶
29:45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. 29:46 And they shall know that I [am] the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I [am] the LORD their God.
Leviticus 26:11-12¶
26:11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 26:12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
Jeremiah 31:33¶
But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Ezekiel 37:26-28¶
37:26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. 37:27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 37:28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
2 Corinthians 6:16¶
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Revelation 21:3 (CULMINATION)¶
Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people [Greek: λαοὶ, PLURAL = "peoples"], and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.
Trajectory note: Every prior iteration uses singular "people" (laos/am). Rev 21:3 uniquely uses PLURAL laoi ("peoples") -- reflecting the universal scope of the eschatological Tabernacles (cf. Rev 7:9 "all nations, kindreds, people, tongues"; Zec 14:16 "all nations").
Genesis Bookend Passages¶
Genesis 2:8-10 -- Garden, River, Tree of Life¶
2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 2:10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
Genesis 3:17, 22-24 -- Curse and Banishment¶
3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life; 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Genesis-Revelation Reversals: | Genesis | Revelation | |---------|------------| | Tree of life barred (3:24) | Tree of life accessible (22:2,14) | | Cursed ground (3:17) | No more curse (22:3) | | Banished from presence (3:23-24) | Tabernacle of God with men (21:3) | | River in Eden (2:10) | River from throne (22:1) | | Death entered (3:19) | No more death (21:4) | | Darkness of sin | No night there (21:25; 22:5) |
DOA-to-Tabernacles Transition¶
Revelation 20:11-21:7 (Continuous Passage)¶
20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new... 21:6 ...I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
DOA-to-Tabernacles sequence: Great white throne (DOA judgment, 20:11-15) -> Death destroyed (20:14) -> New heaven and earth (21:1) -> New Jerusalem descends (21:2) -> "Tabernacle of God with men" (21:3, Tabernacles fulfillment). The five-day gap (Tishri 10 to 15) is bridged by 20:14-21:1 -- the destruction of death and the creation of new heavens and earth.
Additional Context Passages¶
Isaiah 25:6-9 -- Feast on the Mountain, Death Swallowed, Tears Wiped¶
25:6 And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. 25:7 And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. 25:8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken [it]. 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this [is] our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this [is] the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
Connections: "Feast unto all people" (25:6) -> Tabernacles as universal feast; "swallow up death" (25:8) -> Rev 21:4 "no more death"; "wipe away tears" (25:8) -> Rev 21:4; "we have waited for him" (25:9) -> face-to-face communion (Rev 22:4).
Isaiah 65:17-25 -- New Heavens and New Earth¶
65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. 65:18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever [in that] which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. 65:19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
Connection: "New heavens and new earth" (65:17) -> Rev 21:1. "Former shall not be remembered" -> "former things are passed away" (Rev 21:4). "No voice of weeping" (65:19) -> "no more tears" (Rev 21:4).
Isaiah 12:3 -- Drawing Water with Joy¶
12:3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
Connection: This verse was liturgically associated with the Tabernacles water ceremony (Simchat Beit HaShoevah). Jesus quotes it at Tabernacles (John 7:37-39). Fulfilled in Rev 22:1,17.
Jeremiah 2:13 -- The Fountain of Living Waters¶
2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, [and] hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Connection: God himself is "the fountain of living waters" (maqor mayim chayyim, H4726). This is what Rev 22:1 restores -- the river of water of life flowing from the throne of God.
Exodus 25:8 -- The Foundational Sanctuary Purpose¶
25:8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
Connection: שָׁכַנְתִּי (shakanti, "that I may dwell") from שׁכן (shakan, H7931) -- root of mishkan and Shekinah. The ENTIRE sanctuary system exists for ONE purpose: God dwelling with humanity. Rev 21:3 is the ultimate fulfillment.
Hebrews 11:9-10 -- Abraham's Tabernacles and the City¶
11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as [in] a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker [is] God.
Connection: Abraham dwelt in σκηναῖς (skenais, "tents/tabernacles") while looking for a πόλιν (polin, "city") with foundations. The New Jerusalem IS that city -- the permanent dwelling that the temporary sukkah always pointed toward.
2 Corinthians 5:1-4 -- Earthly Tabernacle to Heavenly Building¶
5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of [this] tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 5:4 For we that are in [this] tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
Connection: "Earthly house of this tabernacle" (σκήνους, skenous, G4636) -> temporary. "Building of God... eternal in heavens" -> permanent. "Mortality swallowed up of life" -> Rev 21:4 "no more death."
2 Peter 3:13 -- New Heavens and Earth¶
3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Connection: "New heavens and new earth" -> Rev 21:1. "Wherein dwelleth righteousness" -> Rev 21:27 nothing that defileth enters.
Revelation 3:12 -- Pillar in the Temple, New Jerusalem¶
3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [which is] new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and [I will write upon him] my new name.
Connection: "Temple of my God" (ναῷ, naos) -- before Rev 21:22 where the temple is absent. "New Jerusalem which cometh down out of heaven" -- foreshadows Rev 21:2,10.
Revelation 22:14 -- Right to the Tree of Life¶
22:14 Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Connection: "Right to the tree of life" -- reversal of Gen 3:24 where access was barred. "Enter through the gates" -- the ever-open gates of Rev 21:25.
Additional Tabernacles-Related Passages¶
Deuteronomy 16:13-16 -- Tabernacles as Feast of Rejoicing¶
16:13 Thou shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days, after that thou hast gathered in thy corn and thy wine: 16:14 And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite, the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that [are] within thy gates. 16:15 Seven days shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD shall choose: because the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands, therefore thou shalt surely rejoice. 16:16 Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty:
Key: Tabernacles = the feast of rejoicing. "Thou shalt surely rejoice" (16:15). This joy-character matches Rev 21:4 (no more sorrow, crying, pain) and Rev 7:9-10 (great multitude rejoicing).
Nehemiah 8:14-18 -- Tabernacles Restored After Centuries¶
8:14 And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month: 8:15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as [it is] written. 8:16 So the people went forth, and brought [them], and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God... 8:17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. 8:18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day [was] a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.
Key: "Very great gladness" (8:17) -- the characteristic emotion of Tabernacles. Palm branches explicitly mentioned (8:15, cf. Rev 7:9). The long absence since Joshua implies that the ultimate Tabernacles (Rev 21-22) will surpass all prior observances.
Psalm 46 -- River, City of God, Tabernacles of the Most High¶
46:1 God [is] our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 46:2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 46:4 [There is] a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy [place] of the tabernacles of the most High. 46:5 God [is] in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, [and that] right early. 46:7 The LORD of hosts [is] with us; the God of Jacob [is] our refuge. Selah. 46:10 Be still, and know that I [am] God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Key: "A river... shall make glad the city of God" (46:4) -> Rev 22:1-2. "The holy place of the tabernacles of the most High" (46:4) -> Rev 21:3. "God is in the midst of her" (46:5) -> "God himself shall be with them" (Rev 21:3). "Exalted among the nations" -> universal scope of Rev 21:3.
Revelation 12:12 and 13:6 -- Other skenoo/skene Occurrences¶
12:12 Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell [σκηνοῦντες, skenountes] in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle [σκηνήν, skenen], and them that dwell [σκηνοῦντας, skenountas] in heaven.
Key: These are the other two of the five NT occurrences of skenoo (G4637). Both refer to those who "tabernacle" in heaven. Rev 13:6 explicitly connects God's name, God's tabernacle (skene), and those who dwell (skenountas) in heaven -- the very things that Rev 21:3 brings to permanent fulfillment on the new earth.
Revelation 15:5-8 -- The Temple of the Tabernacle in Heaven¶
15:5 And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple [naos] of the tabernacle [skene] of the testimony in heaven was opened: 15:6 And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues... 15:8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
Key: "The temple [naos] of the tabernacle [skene] of the testimony" -- both naos and skene together, the last time both appear before Rev 21. "No man was able to enter" (15:8) -- the temple is inaccessible during the plagues. Contrast with Rev 21:22-25 where there is no naos and the gates are never shut. The progression: temple closed (15:8) -> temple absent/absorbed (21:22) -> unmediated access (22:4, "they shall see his face").
Colossians 2:16-17 -- Feasts as Shadow of Things to Come¶
2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath [days]: 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body [is] of Christ.
Key: The feasts are σκιά (skia, "shadow") of μελλόντων (mellonton, "things to come," present participle = still coming). Tabernacles, as the last feast, casts its shadow forward to the eschatological reality -- the New Jerusalem.
Isaiah 55:1 -- The Water Invitation¶
55:1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Connection: "Every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters" -> Rev 22:17 "let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." The same invitation pattern: universal, free, water-based.
Joel 3:18 -- Mountain Fountain¶
3:18 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
Connection: "A fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD" -> Rev 22:1 "river... proceeding out of the throne of God." The source shifts from the temple (house of the LORD) to the throne -- consistent with Rev 21:22 where God himself IS the temple.
Ezekiel 37:26-28 -- Sanctuary in Their Midst Forever¶
37:26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. 37:27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 37:28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
Key: This is the covenant formula with BOTH "sanctuary" (miqdash) and "tabernacle" (mishkan) -- the dwelling is permanent ("for evermore," leolam). Hebrew parsing confirms mishkani (my mishkan, from shakan) -- the direct OT antecedent of Rev 21:3's skene/skenoo language.
1 Kings 8:10-12 -- Solomon's Temple Filled with Glory¶
8:10 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy [place], that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, 8:11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD. 8:12 Then spake Solomon, The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.
Connection: The glory filling the temple (8:11) -> "the glory of God did lighten it" (Rev 21:23). Priests could not stand to minister (8:11) -> in the New Jerusalem, the glory is not overwhelming but life-giving; God's servants "shall serve him" (Rev 22:3) and "see his face" (Rev 22:4).
Exodus 40:34-35 -- Glory Filling the Tabernacle¶
40:34 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 40:35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
Connection: Moses could not enter (40:35) -> "no man was able to enter the temple" (Rev 15:8) -> but in Rev 21-22, the barrier is removed: "they shall see his face" (22:4). The trajectory of access: restricted (Exo 40) -> mediated (through priests) -> opened (Heb 10:19-22) -> direct and permanent (Rev 22:4).
Hebrews 9:8-12 -- The Way Into the Holiest¶
9:8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9:9 Which [was] a figure for the time then present... 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us].
Connection: "The way into the holiest was not yet made manifest" (9:8) -> in Rev 21:22, the way is fully open because God himself IS the temple. "Greater and more perfect tabernacle" (skene, 9:11) -> the ultimate skene of Rev 21:3.
Hebrews 12:22-24 -- The Heavenly Jerusalem¶
12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than [that of] Abel.
Connection: "The city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem" (12:22) -> Rev 21:2 "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven." "Written in heaven" -> "written in the Lamb's book of life" (Rev 21:27).
Isaiah 35:10 -- Everlasting Joy, Sorrow Fled¶
35:10 And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Connection: "Sorrow and sighing shall flee away" -> Rev 21:4 "neither sorrow, nor crying." "Everlasting joy" -> the permanent state of Tabernacles celebration.
Jeremiah 17:13 -- The Fountain of Living Waters¶
17:13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, [and] they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
Connection: "The LORD, the fountain of living waters" (maqor mayim chayyim) -- God himself IS the source. Those who forsake him are "written in the earth" (contrast: "written in the Lamb's book of life," Rev 21:27). The living water trajectory reaches its climax in Rev 22:1.
Exodus 23:16 -- Feast of Ingathering¶
23:16 And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, [which is] in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.
Connection: Tabernacles is called the "Feast of Ingathering" (chag ha-asif) -- celebrating the completed harvest at year's end. The eschatological Tabernacles is the ultimate ingathering: "a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations" (Rev 7:9).
