Primary Verses¶
Revelation 19:1-21 (COMPLETE CHAPTER -- Primary Study Text)¶
Revelation 19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: Revelation 19:2 For true and righteous [are] his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. Revelation 19:3 And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. Revelation 19:4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. Revelation 19:5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. Revelation 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. Revelation 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See [thou do it] not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. Revelation 19:12 His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. Revelation 19:13 And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. Revelation 19:14 And the armies [which were] in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. Revelation 19:16 And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; Revelation 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all [men, both] free and bond, both small and great. Revelation 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Revelation 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which [sword] proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
SP037 Altar Vindication Arc Verses¶
Rev 6:9-11 (Stage 1 -- Original Altar Cry)¶
Revelation 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: Revelation 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? Revelation 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they [were], should be fulfilled.
SP037 vocabulary comparison with Rev 19:2: - Rev 6:10: "holy and true" (hagios kai alethinos) / Rev 19:2: "true and righteous" (alethinai kai dikaiai) - Rev 6:10: "judge and avenge" (krineis kai ekdikeis) / Rev 19:2: "judged...avenged" (ekrinen...exedikesen) - Rev 6:10 uses PRESENT tense (ongoing cry) / Rev 19:2 uses AORIST (completed action)
Rev 14:18 (Stage 4 -- Altar Fire Angel)¶
Revelation 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
Rev 16:5-7 (Stage 5 -- Altar Speaks)¶
Revelation 16:5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. Revelation 16:6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. Revelation 16:7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous [are] thy judgments.
Note: Rev 16:7 and Rev 19:2 share nearly identical vocabulary: "true and righteous are thy/his judgments" -- this verbal echo confirms the arc.
Rev 18:20,24 (Context -- Vindication Call and Blood-Guilt)¶
Revelation 18:20 Rejoice over her, [thou] heaven, and [ye] holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. Revelation 18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast [it] into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. Revelation 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft [he be], shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; Revelation 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. Revelation 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
OT Background: Winepress Warrior (Isaiah 63:1-6 -- FULL CHAPTER CONTEXT)¶
Isaiah 63:1 Who [is] this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this [that is] glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. Isaiah 63:2 Wherefore [art thou] red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? Isaiah 63:3 I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people [there was] none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. Isaiah 63:4 For the day of vengeance [is] in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. Isaiah 63:5 And I looked, and [there was] none to help; and I wondered that [there was] none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. Isaiah 63:6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
Connection to Rev 19:13,15: The "vesture dipped in blood" (19:13) and the winepress of wrath (19:15) both allude to Isa 63. In Isaiah, the warrior comes FROM Edom with garments ALREADY stained with blood -- the judgment has already been executed. The blood is explicitly enemy blood ("their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments"). This is judgment imagery, not atoning sacrifice.
Isaiah 61:10 (Garments of Salvation)¶
Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth [herself] with her jewels.
Connection: Both bridal and garment imagery converge here. The bride adorning herself with jewels parallels Rev 19:7-8 (the bride has made herself ready, clothed in fine linen). The bridegroom imagery connects to Christ as bridegroom (Mat 25:1-10).
OT Background: Daniel 7 (Court, Beast, Kingdom)¶
Daniel 7:9-14 (Court Scene and Son of Man)¶
Daniel 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire. Daniel 7:10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Daniel 7:11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld [even] till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. Daniel 7:12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. Daniel 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, [one] like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. Daniel 7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.
Daniel 7:26-27 (Beast Destruction and Kingdom Given)¶
Daniel 7:26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy [it] unto the end. Daniel 7:27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom [is] an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
Connection to Rev 19:20: Dan 7:11 -- "the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame" directly parallels Rev 19:20 -- "the beast was taken...these both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone." Both describe the beast's destruction by fire.
OT Background: Supper of the Great God (Ezekiel 39:17-20)¶
Ezekiel 39:17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, [even] a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. Ezekiel 39:18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. Ezekiel 39:19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. Ezekiel 39:20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
Connection to Rev 19:17-18: Rev 19:17-18 is a near-verbatim allusion to Ezk 39:17-20. Both feature: (1) birds/fowls invited, (2) to eat the flesh of mighty men, (3) including kings/princes, (4) horses and riders, (5) described as God's sacrifice/supper.
OT Background: Joel -- Winepress and Harvest¶
Joel 3:13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness [is] great. Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD [is] near in the valley of decision.
OT Background: Deuteronomy 32:43 (Avenging Servants' Blood)¶
Deuteronomy 32:40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. Deuteronomy 32:41 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. Deuteronomy 32:42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; [and that] with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. Deuteronomy 32:43 Rejoice, O ye nations, [with] his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, [and] to his people.
Connection to Rev 19:2: Deu 32:43 is the foundational OT text for the altar vindication arc. "He will avenge the blood of his servants" is directly fulfilled in Rev 19:2 "hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand."
Hallel Psalms (Source of "Hallelujah")¶
Psalm 113:1-9 (Opening of the Egyptian Hallel)¶
Psalm 113:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. Psalm 113:2 Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD'S name [is] to be praised. Psalm 113:4 The LORD [is] high above all nations, [and] his glory above the heavens. Psalm 113:5 Who [is] like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, Psalm 113:6 Who humbleth [himself] to behold [the things that are] in heaven, and in the earth! Psalm 113:7 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, [and] lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; Psalm 113:8 That he may set [him] with princes, [even] with the princes of his people. Psalm 113:9 He maketh the barren woman to keep house, [and to be] a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.
Psalm 115:18 (End of Psalm 115)¶
Psalm 115:18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.
Psalm 117:1-2 (Shortest psalm -- all praise)¶
Psalm 117:1 O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. Psalm 117:2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD [endureth] for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Psalm 146:1-10 (Opening of the Final Hallel)¶
Psalm 146:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. Psalm 146:2 While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being. Psalm 146:3 Put not your trust in princes, [nor] in the son of man, in whom [there is] no help. Psalm 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Psalm 146:5 Happy [is he] that [hath] the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope [is] in the LORD his God: Psalm 146:6 Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein [is]: which keepeth truth for ever: Psalm 146:7 Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners: Psalm 146:8 The LORD openeth [the eyes of] the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous: Psalm 146:9 The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. Psalm 146:10 The LORD shall reign for ever, [even] thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD.
Connection to Rev 19:6: Psalm 146:10 "The LORD shall reign for ever" parallels Rev 19:6 "the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." The Hallel psalms (113-118, 146-150) all begin and/or end with "Hallelujah" -- the word that Rev 19 brings from the OT into the NT for the first (and only) time.
Wedding Parables¶
Matthew 22:1-14 (Wedding Feast Parable)¶
Matthew 22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, Matthew 22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, Matthew 22:3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Matthew 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and [my] fatlings [are] killed, and all things [are] ready: come unto the marriage. Matthew 22:5 But they made light of [it], and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: Matthew 22:6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated [them] spitefully, and slew [them]. Matthew 22:7 But when the king heard [thereof], he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Matthew 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Matthew 22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. Matthew 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. Matthew 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: Matthew 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Matthew 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few [are] chosen.
Connection: The wedding garment requirement (Mat 22:11-13) parallels Rev 19:8 (the bride's fine linen). Both teach that participation in the marriage feast requires proper garments = righteousness.
Matthew 25:1-13 (Ten Virgins Parable)¶
Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Matthew 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five [were] foolish. Matthew 25:3 They that [were] foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: Matthew 25:4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. Matthew 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Matthew 25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. Matthew 25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. Matthew 25:9 But the wise answered, saying, [Not so]; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. Matthew 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Matthew 25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. Matthew 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Matthew 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Connection: "They that were ready went in with him to the marriage" (Mat 25:10) parallels "Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb" (Rev 19:9). Readiness is the prerequisite.
Bride-Church Typology¶
Ephesians 5:25-32¶
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. Ephesians 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
2 Corinthians 11:2¶
2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present [you as] a chaste virgin to Christ.
Logos/Word of God¶
John 1:1-14 (Logos Prologue)¶
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:9 [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Connection to Rev 19:13: The title "The Word of God" (ho logos tou theou) in Rev 19:13 is the same logos from John 1:1. The pre-existent divine Word who "was God" (John 1:1) and "was made flesh" (John 1:14) now appears as the warrior-king on the white horse. This is the Lamb of God (John 1:29) now revealed as the conquering King.
1 John 1:1 (Word of Life)¶
1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
Hebrews 4:12-13 (Word of God -- Sharp Sword)¶
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Connection to Rev 19:15: The "sharp sword" from Christ's mouth (Rev 19:15) parallels Heb 4:12's "sharper than any twoedged sword." But Heb 4:12 describes the Word's spiritual penetration; Rev 19:15 describes its judicial/military power.
King of Kings / Lord of Lords Title¶
1 Timothy 6:15-16¶
1 Timothy 6:15 Which in his times he shall shew, [who is] the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 1 Timothy 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom [be] honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Revelation 17:14 (REVERSED word order)¶
Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.
Note on word order: Rev 17:14 has "Lord of lords, and King of kings" while Rev 19:16 has "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." 1 Tim 6:15 matches Rev 19:16's order.
Psalm 2:9 (Iron Rod)¶
Psalm 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
Connection to Rev 19:15: "He shall rule them with a rod of iron" -- direct quotation of Psalm 2:9.
Faithful Witness / Faithful and True¶
Revelation 1:5¶
Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Revelation 3:14¶
Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
Title progression: Rev 1:5 "the faithful witness" (ho martys ho pistos) -> Rev 3:14 "the faithful and true witness" (ho martys ho pistos kai alethinos) -> Rev 19:11 "Faithful and True" (Pistos kai Alethinos). The title expands from witness to cosmic judge.
Testimony of Jesus in Revelation¶
Revelation 12:17¶
Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 20:4¶
Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Occurrences of martyria Iesou in Revelation: 1:2,9; 12:17; 19:10; 20:4. In Rev 19:10 it is defined: "the testimony of Jesus IS the spirit of prophecy."
Lake of Fire -- Subsequent Occurrences after Rev 19:20¶
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Sequence: Beast + false prophet first (19:20) -> Satan (20:10) -> death and Hades (20:14) -> unsaved (20:15). The beast and false prophet are the FIRST entities cast into the lake of fire.
Hallel Psalm 118 (Closing of Egyptian Hallel -- Messianic Psalm)¶
Psalm 118:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good: because his mercy [endureth] for ever. Psalm 118:14 The LORD [is] my strength and song, and is become my salvation. Psalm 118:15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation [is] in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. Psalm 118:22 The stone [which] the builders refused is become the head [stone] of the corner. Psalm 118:23 This is the LORD'S doing; it [is] marvellous in our eyes. Psalm 118:24 This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Psalm 118:26 Blessed [be] he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. Psalm 118:28 Thou [art] my God, and I will praise thee: [thou art] my God, I will exalt thee. Psalm 118:29 O give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good: for his mercy [endureth] for ever.
Connection: Psalm 118 closes the Egyptian Hallel. "Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD" (118:26) was shouted at Jesus' triumphal entry (Mat 21:9). "We will rejoice and be glad" (118:24) echoes Rev 19:7 "Let us be glad and rejoice." The Hallel framework links Passover deliverance to eschatological triumph.
Winepress Chain: Rev 14:18-20¶
Revelation 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. Revelation 14:19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast [it] into the great winepress of the wrath of God. Revelation 14:20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand [and] six hundred furlongs.
Connection to Rev 19:15: In Rev 14, an ANGEL executes the grape harvest/winepress. In Rev 19:15, CHRIST HIMSELF treads the winepress. The agent escalates from angelic to divine. Both use lenos (G3025) for winepress. The altar-fire angel (14:18) continues the SP037 arc.
OT Marriage Metaphor: Hosea 2:19-20¶
Hosea 2:19 And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. Hosea 2:20 I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD.
Connection: God betroths Israel "in righteousness" and "in faithfulness" -- the same qualities that characterize the Lamb's bride (Rev 19:8, dikaiomata/righteous acts) and the Rider (Rev 19:11, Faithful and True).
Revelation 1:1-6 (Opening -- Logos/Testimony/Faithful Witness)¶
Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified [it] by his angel unto his servant John: Revelation 1:2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Revelation 1:3 Blessed [is] he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time [is] at hand. Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Connection: Rev 1:2 links "the word of God" and "the testimony of Jesus" -- the same pair that appears in Rev 19:10,13 and 20:4. Rev 1:5 introduces Jesus as "the faithful witness" (ho martys ho pistos) -- the title that reaches its fullest form at Rev 19:11 "Faithful and True."
VP022 Bracket: Rev 22:8-9 (Parallel to Rev 19:10)¶
Revelation 22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Revelation 22:9 Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
Connection to Rev 19:10: Nearly identical scene. Both have John falling to worship, both have the angel refusing with "See thou do it not," both identify the angel as a fellowservant, both command "worship God." The difference: 19:10 says "of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus"; 22:9 says "of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book." This verbal variation within identical structure confirms the bracket.
Bride as New Jerusalem: Rev 21:1-5,9¶
Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God. Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Connection: Rev 21:2 identifies the bride as the New Jerusalem. The marriage announced in Rev 19:7-9 reaches its consummation in Rev 21. The bride "prepared" (hetoimasen, 19:7) appears "adorned" (kekosmemenen, 21:2). Rev 21:5 "true and faithful" echoes Rev 19:9 "true sayings of God" and 19:11 "Faithful and True."
Isaiah 54:5-6 (Marriage Metaphor -- God as Husband)¶
Isaiah 54:5 For thy Maker [is] thine husband; the LORD of hosts [is] his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. Isaiah 54:6 For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.
Connection: The OT foundation for the marriage supper. God as husband/maker connects to the Lamb as bridegroom in Rev 19:7. The "wife of youth" motif shows God's enduring covenant faithfulness despite Israel's unfaithfulness -- now consummated at the eschatological marriage.
Revelation 2:27 and 12:5 (Iron Rod Chain)¶
Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne.
Connection to Rev 19:15: The iron rod chain: Psa 2:9 (promise to the Messiah) -> Rev 2:27 (promise to Thyatira overcomer, quoting Psa 2) -> Rev 12:5 (the male child who will rule) -> Rev 19:15 (Christ executing the rule). The progressive fulfillment moves from promise to execution.
Psalm 45:6-17 (The Royal Wedding Psalm -- Bride and King)¶
Psalm 45:6 Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom [is] a right sceptre. Psalm 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Psalm 45:8 All thy garments [smell] of myrrh, and aloes, [and] cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. Psalm 45:9 Kings' daughters [were] among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. Psalm 45:10 Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; Psalm 45:11 So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he [is] thy Lord; and worship thou him. Psalm 45:13 The king's daughter [is] all glorious within: her clothing [is] of wrought gold. Psalm 45:14 She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. Psalm 45:15 With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace. Psalm 45:17 I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
Connection: Psalm 45 is THE OT royal wedding psalm. The king "lovest righteousness" (45:7) connects to Rev 19:11 ("in righteousness he doth judge"). The bride's clothing "of wrought gold" (45:13) parallels the bride's "fine linen, clean and white" (Rev 19:8). "With gladness and rejoicing" (45:15) echoes "Let us be glad and rejoice" (Rev 19:7). The bride is "brought unto the king" just as those "called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb" are blessed (Rev 19:9).
Revelation 1:12-16 (Christ's Initial Appearance -- Shared Imagery with Rev 19)¶
Revelation 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [one] like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. Revelation 1:14 His head and [his] hairs [were] white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes [were] as a flame of fire; Revelation 1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength.
Connection to Rev 19:11-16: Both passages describe Christ. Shared elements: eyes as flame of fire (1:14 = 19:12), sharp sword from mouth (1:16 = 19:15), voice as many waters (1:15 echoes the "voice of many waters" in 19:6). The initial vision (ch. 1) presents Christ as high priest among the lampstands; the final vision (ch. 19) presents Christ as warrior-king on the white horse. Same person, different roles.
