Greek Parsing — Raw Data

Revelation 17:1

Key terms: - κρίμα (krima, G2917) — judgment/condemnation, Acc Sg N - πόρνης (pornēs, G4204) — harlot, Gen Sg F (genitive = "of the harlot") - μεγάλης (megalēs, G3173) — great, Gen Sg F - καθημένης (kathēmenēs, G2521) — sitting, Pres M/P Ptcp Gen Sg F (present participle = ongoing state) - ὑδάτων πολλῶν (hydatōn pollōn, G5204) — many waters, Gen Pl N

Note: Triple articular construction: τῆς πόρνης τῆς μεγάλης τῆς καθημένης — "the harlot, the great [one], the [one] sitting" — emphatic identification.

Revelation 17:2

Key terms: - ἐπόρνευσαν (eporneumsan, G4203) — committed fornication, Aor Act Ind 3P (aorist = completed action) - βασιλεῖς (basileis, G935) — kings, Nom Pl M - ἐμεθύσθησαν (emethysthēsan, G3182) — were made drunk, Aor PASS Ind 3P (passive = they were acted upon) - πορνείας (porneias, G4202) — fornication, Gen Sg F

Note: The kings actively committed fornication (active voice), but earth-dwellers were MADE drunk (passive voice) — the rulers are agents, the populace are victims.

Revelation 17:3

Note: ἔχων is Nom Sg M (masculine participle), modifying the beast (neuter) — a constructio ad sensum, viewing the beast as a masculine power rather than a neuter thing.

Revelation 17:4

Key terms: - περιβεβλημένη (peribeblēmenē, G4016) — clothed/arrayed, Perf PASS Ptcp Nom Sg F (perfect = ongoing state resulting from past action) - πορφυροῦν (porphyroun, G4210) — purple, Acc Sg N - κεχρυσωμένη (kechrysōmenē, G5558) — gilded/decked, Perf PASS Ptcp Nom Sg F - βδελυγμάτων (bdelygmatōn, G946) — abominations, Gen Pl N - ἀκάθαρτα (akatharta, G169) — unclean things, Acc Pl N

Note: Both participles are PERFECT PASSIVE — she was clothed and gilded by someone/something else. Her adornment is not her own but imposed/received. The cup contains bdeligmata (abominations) — the same word used for the "abomination of desolation" (Mat 24:15 || Dan 9:27).

Revelation 17:5

Key terms: - μέτωπον (metōpon, G3359) — forehead, Acc Sg N - γεγραμμένον (gegrammenon, G1125) — written, Perf PASS Ptcp Nom Sg N (perfect = permanently inscribed) - μυστήριον (mystērion, G3466) — mystery, Nom Sg N - ΜΗΤΗΡ (mētēr, G3384) — mother, Nom Sg F - ΠΟΡΝΩΝ (pornōn, G4204) — harlots, Gen Pl F - ΒΔΕΛΥΓΜΑΤΩΝ (bdelygmatōn, G946) — abominations, Gen Pl N

Note: The name is gegrammenon (perfect passive) — permanently inscribed, characterizing her essential identity. ΠΟΡΝΩΝ is Gen Pl F (feminine) — "of harlots" (daughter churches). ΒΔΕΛΥΓΜΑΤΩΝ is Gen Pl N — "of abominations" (idolatrous practices).

Revelation 17:6

Key terms: - μεθύουσαν (methyousan, G3184) — being drunk, Pres Act Ptcp Acc Sg F (present = ongoing intoxication) - αἵματος τῶν ἁγίων (haimatos tōn hagiōn) — blood of the saints - αἵματος τῶν μαρτύρων Ἰησοῦ (haimatos tōn martyrōn Iēsou) — blood of the martyrs of Jesus

Note: TWO distinct groups: (1) "the saints" (hagiōn) and (2) "the martyrs of Jesus" (martyrōn Iēsou). This may indicate persecution across two eras: OT saints and NT martyrs of Jesus. The present participle methyousan indicates ongoing/habitual action — she is characteristically drunk with blood.

Revelation 17:7

Key terms: - μυστήριον (mystērion, G3466) — mystery, Acc Sg N - βαστάζοντος (bastazontos, G941) — carrying/bearing, Pres Act Ptcp Gen Sg N - ἔχοντος (echontos, G2192) — having, Pres Act Ptcp Gen Sg N

Revelation 17:8

Key terms: - ἦν (ēn) — was, Impf Act Ind 3S (imperfect = past continuous) - οὐκ ἔστιν (ouk estin) — is not, Pres Act Ind 3S - μέλλει ἀναβαίνειν (mellei anabainein) — is about to ascend, Pres + Pres Inf - ἀβύσσου (abyssou, G12) — abyss/bottomless pit, Gen Sg F - ἀπώλειαν (apōleian, G684) — perdition/destruction, Acc Sg F - ὑπάγει (hypagei, G5217) — goes, Pres Act Ind 3S - παρέσται (parestai, G3918) — will be present, Fut Mid Ind 3S

CRITICAL: The beast's existence formula: ἦν (was) καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν (and is not) καὶ παρέσται (and will be present). This INVERTS the divine formula: ὁ ὢν (the being/is) καὶ ὁ ἦν (and who was) καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος (and the coming one) — Rev 1:4,8; 4:8. God IS, WAS, IS TO COME; the beast WAS, IS NOT, WILL BE PRESENT — a counterfeit existence.

Revelation 17:9

Key terms: - νοῦς (nous, G3563) — mind, Nom Sg M - σοφίαν (sophian, G4678) — wisdom, Acc Sg F - ὄρη (orē, G3735) — mountains, Nom Pl N - κάθηται (kathētai, G2521) — sits, Pres M/P Ind 3S - βασιλεῖς ἑπτά (basileis hepta, G935) — seven kings, Nom Pl M

Note: The Greek makes a double equation: heads = mountains AND heads = kings. The conjunction καί before βασιλεῖς introduces a SECOND identification, not a separate entity. Both are valid meanings of the heads.

Revelation 17:10

Key terms: - ἔπεσαν (epesan, G4098) — fell/have fallen, Aor Act Ind 3P - ἔστιν (estin) — is, Pres Act Ind 3S - οὔπω ἦλθεν (oupō ēlthen) — has not yet come, Aor Act Ind 3S - ὀλίγον (oligon, G3641) — a little/short, Acc Sg N - δεῖ μεῖναι (dei meinai) — must remain, Pres Ind + Aor Inf

Revelation 17:11

Key terms: - ὄγδοός (ogdoos, G3590) — eighth, Nom Sg M - ἐκ τῶν ἑπτά (ek tōn hepta) — "of/from the seven" — the eighth is derived from the seven - ἀπώλειαν (apōleian, G684) — perdition, Acc Sg F

Note: αὐτός is masculine (himself), not neuter — treating the beast as a personal entity. The eighth "is of the seven" (ek tōn hepta) — proceeds from, is derived from the seven. Same destination: εἰς ἀπώλειαν ὑπάγει.

Revelation 17:12

Key terms: - κέρατα (kerata, G2768) — horns, Nom Pl N - βασιλεῖς (basileis, G935) — kings, Nom Pl M - βασιλείαν (basileian, G932) — kingdom, Acc Sg F - οὔπω ἔλαβον (oupō elabon) — not yet received, Aor Act Ind 3P - ἐξουσίαν (exousian, G1849) — authority, Acc Sg F - μίαν ὥραν (mian hōran) — one hour, Acc Sg F

Note: The ten receive ἐξουσίαν (authority) not βασιλείαν (kingdom) — a distinction. They act "as kings" (hōs basileis) for "one hour" (mian hōran) — brief, delegated power.

Revelation 17:13

Key terms: - γνώμην (gnōmēn, G1106) — purpose/mind/intent, Acc Sg F - δύναμιν (dynamin, G1411) — power, Acc Sg F - ἐξουσίαν (exousian, G1849) — authority, Acc Sg F - διδόασιν (didoasin, G1325) — they give, Pres Act Ind 3P

Key terms: - Ἀρνίου (Arniou, G721) — Lamb (diminutive), Gen Sg N - πολεμήσουσιν (polemēsousin, G4170) — will make war, Fut Act Ind 3P - νικήσει (nikēsei, G3528) — will overcome, Fut Act Ind 3S - Κύριος κυρίων (Kyrios kyriōn) — Lord of lords - Βασιλεὺς βασιλέων (Basileus basileōn) — King of kings - κλητοὶ (klētoi, G2822) — called, Nom Pl M - ἐκλεκτοὶ (eklektoi, G1588) — chosen/elect, Nom Pl M - πιστοί (pistoi, G4103) — faithful, Nom Pl M

Note: The Lamb (diminutive arnion — small lamb) defeats the beast (thērion — wild beast). The contrast between weakness and strength is deliberate. Those "with him" are described by three adjectives: called, chosen, faithful.

Revelation 17:18

Key terms: - πόλις (polis, G4172) — city, Nom Sg F - ἔχουσα (echousa, G2192) — having, Pres Act Ptcp Nom Sg F - βασιλείαν (basileian, G932) — kingdom, Acc Sg F - βασιλέων (basileōn, G935) — kings, Gen Pl M

CRITICAL: ἡ ἔχουσα βασιλείαν = "the [one] HAVING kingdom" — NOT "the [one] reigning." This is present active participle of ἔχω (to have/hold), NOT βασιλεύω (to reign). John deliberately avoids basileuō for the harlot, reserving it for God, Christ, and the saints.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

Key terms: - ἀποστασία (apostasia, G646) — falling away/apostasy, Nom Sg F - ἀποκαλυφθῇ (apokalyphthē, G601) — be revealed, Aor PASS Subj 3S - ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας (anthrōpos tēs anomias) — man of lawlessness, Nom Sg M - υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (huios tēs apōleias) — son of perdition/destruction, Nom Sg M

Key terms: - ἀντικείμενος (antikeimenos, G480) — opposing, Pres M/P Ptcp Nom Sg M - ὑπεραιρόμενος (hyperairomenos, G5229) — exalting himself above, Pres PASS Ptcp Nom Sg M - ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ (naon tou Theou) — temple of God - καθίσαι (kathisai, G2523) — to sit, Aor Act Inf - ἀποδεικνύντα (apodeiknunta, G584) — showing/proclaiming, Pres Act Ptcp Acc Sg M

Note: "The son of perdition" (apōleias) uses the SAME word as Rev 17:8,11 (apōleian). The man of sin "sits in the temple of God" — a religious claim of divine authority, paralleling the harlot's religious character.
