Question¶
How does the sea beast of Revelation 13:1-10 synthesize all four beasts of Daniel 7? What does the 42-month period signify? How does the historicist tradition identify this power? How does the dragon-to-beast power transfer function, and what is the significance of the deadly wound, blasphemy against God's tabernacle, war with the saints, and the patience/captivity saying?
Topics¶
BLASPHEMY¶
General scriptures: EXO 20:7; LEV 19:12; 22:32; 24:10-16; DEU 5:11; 2SA 12:14; 2KI 19:22; 2CH 32:19; DAN 7:25; 11:36,37; 2TH 2:3,4; REV 13:1,5,6; 16:9,11,21; 17:3 Prophecy of: REV 13:1,5,6; 16:9,11,21; 17:3 Instances: Shelomith's son (LEV 24:10-16); Israelites against God (NUM 21:5,6); Rabshakeh (2KI 18:22; 19); Peter (MAT 26:74); Revilers of Jesus (MAT 27:40-44); Man of sin (2TH 2:3,4) False indictments for: Naboth (1KI 21:13); Jesus (MAT 26:65; JHN 19:7); Stephen (ACT 6:11,13) Relevance: The sea beast is characterized by "names of blasphemy" on its heads (Rev 13:1), a mouth speaking blasphemies (13:5), and blasphemy against God's name, tabernacle, and heavenly dwellers (13:6). The prophetic blasphemy passages (Dan 7:25; 11:36,37; 2 Thess 2:3,4) converge on a single figure.
PERSECUTION¶
Of the righteous: GEN 49:23; PSA 44:15-18,22; 119:51,61; MAT 5:10-12,44; 10:16-18,21-23,28; 23:34,35; 24:8-10; ROM 8:17,35-37; 2CO 4:8-12; 11:23-27; 2TI 3:12; HEB 10:32-34; 11:25-27,33-38; REV 2:3,10,13; 6:9-11; 7:13-17; 12:11; 17:6; 20:4 Key connection: The beast makes "war with the saints and overcomes them" (Rev 13:7), paralleling Dan 7:21,25. This is not isolated persecution but systematic, empire-wide, centuries-long wearing out of the saints.
MARTYRDOM¶
General: PSA 44:22; MAT 10:21,22,39; 16:25; 23:34,35; 24:9; ROM 8:36; 1CO 13:3; REV 6:9-11; 11:7-12; 12:11; 16:6; 17:6 Instances: Abel, prophets of Jezebel, Zechariah, John the Baptist, Jesus, Stephen, James Relevance: The beast's war with saints (Rev 13:7) produces martyrs whose souls cry out (Rev 6:9-11) and whose blood is on the woman of Rev 17:6.
DRAGON¶
Poisonous serpent: DEU 32:33 Sea dragon: PSA 74:13; ISA 27:1 Applied to Pharaoh: ISA 51:9; to Satan: REV 20:2 Symbolical: EZK 29:3; 32:2; REV 12; 13; 16:13 Relevance: The dragon (identified as Satan in Rev 12:9) gives the beast its power, throne, and authority (Rev 13:2). The dragon has the same 7 heads and 10 horns as the beast (Rev 12:3), establishing the template.
LION¶
Symbolical: GEN 49:9; DAN 7:4; EZK 1:10; REV 4:7; 5:5; 9:8,17; 13:2 Figurative: PRO 19:12; JER 5:6; 50:17; HOS 5:14; 1PE 5:8 Relevance: Dan 7:4's lion (= Babylon) contributes the "mouth" to Rev 13:2's composite beast. The Lion of Judah (Rev 5:5) stands as Christ's title in contrast.
LEOPARD¶
Figurative: DAN 7:6; ISA 11:6; JER 5:6; HOS 13:7; HAB 1:8 Relevance: Dan 7:6's leopard (= Greece) with four heads and four wings contributes the "body" to Rev 13:2 and 4 of the 7 heads.
BEAR¶
Ferocity: 2SA 17:8; PRO 17:12; 28:15; ISA 11:7; LAM 3:10; HOS 13:8 Relevance: Dan 7:5's bear (= Medo-Persia) contributes the "feet" to Rev 13:2. The bear's crushing power is expressed in the beast's trampling authority.
LAMB OF GOD¶
A name of Jesus: JHN 1:29; REV 6:16; 7:9,10,14,17; 12:11; 13:8; 14:1,4; 15:3; 17:14; 19:17; 21:9,14,22,23,27; 22:1,3 Relevance: The Lamb slain (Rev 13:8; 5:6) uses the same verb (sphazo G4969) as the beast's deadly wound (Rev 13:3). The beast counterfeits the Lamb's death-and-resurrection. The book of life belongs to the Lamb (Rev 13:8; 21:27).
PATIENCE¶
General: PSA 37:7-9; ROM 5:3,4; 8:25; HEB 10:36; 12:1; JAS 1:3,4; 5:7,8; 1PE 2:19-23; 2PE 1:5,6; REV 1:9; 2:2,3,19; 3:10; 13:10; 14:12 Relevance: Rev 13:10 and 14:12 form an inclusio with "Here is the patience of the saints" — bracketing the entire beast-to-angels section. Hypomonē (G5281) = not passive waiting but active, cheerful endurance under persecution.
WORSHIP¶
Rendered only to God: EXO 20:3; DEU 5:7; 6:13; MAT 4:10; LUK 4:8; REV 14:6,7; 19:10; 22:8,9 Relevance: The central conflict of Rev 13-14 is a worship war. Proskyneo (G4352) appears for dragon-worship (13:4a), beast-worship (13:4b, 8, 12, 15), and Creator-worship (14:7). The first angel's message commands worship of the Creator in direct opposition to beast worship.
SERPENT¶
Satan appears as: GEN 3:1-15; 2CO 11:3 Curse upon: GEN 3:14,15; 49:17 Figurative: ISA 14:29; 30:6; 65:25 Relevance: Rev 12:9 identifies the dragon as "that old serpent" (ophis ho archaios) — connecting the beast's power source (the dragon/Satan) to the original deceiver of Eden.
CAPTIVITY¶
Figurative: ISA 61:1; ROM 7:23; 2CO 10:5; 2TI 2:26 "Captivity led captive": JDG 5:12; PSA 68:18; EPH 4:8 Relevance: Rev 13:10's captivity saying ("If anyone is for captivity, into captivity he goes") echoes Jer 15:2; 43:11 — a lex talionis (retributive justice) applied to the beast's persecutors.
LEVIATHAN¶
Possibly a crocodile: JOB 41; PSA 104:26 Crooked serpent: ISA 27:1 Figurative: PSA 74:14 Relevance: The multi-headed sea monster of OT tradition (PSA 74:13-14; ISA 27:1) feeds into the imagery of the beast from the sea with seven heads.
BOOK (of Life)¶
References: EXO 32:32,33; PSA 69:28; 87:6; DAN 12:1; LUK 10:20; PHP 4:3; REV 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12,15; 21:27; 22:19 Relevance: Rev 13:8 identifies beast-worshippers as those "whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." The book of life determines who worships the beast and who refuses.
