Question

What is the significance of the seventh trumpet (Rev 11:15-18) and the revelation of the ark (Rev 11:19) as the structural pivot of Revelation? How does this correspond to the Most Holy Place access at the center of the Day of Atonement ritual?

Topics

ARK

In the tabernacle, called: "ark of the covenant" (Num 10:33; Deu 31:26; Heb 9:4), "ark of the testimony" (Exo 30:6), "ark of the Lord" (Jos 4:11), "ark of God" (1Sa 3:3; 2Sa 6:7). Sanctified (Exo 30:26). Ceremonies connected with, on the day of atonement (Lev 16:13-15). Holy (2Ch 8:11; 35:3). An oracle of God (Num 10:33; 1Ch 13:3; 16:4,37).

Contents: The law (Exo 25:16,21; Deu 10:5; 1Ki 8:9; 2Ch 5:10), Aaron's rod (Num 17:10; Heb 9:4), pot of manna (Exo 16:33-34; Heb 9:4).

Place: Behind the veil, in the Most Holy Place (Exo 26:33; 40:21; Heb 9:2-4).

History: Set up in Shiloh, taken to battle, captured by Philistines, returned, transferred to Solomon's temple (1Ki 8:6-9; 2Ch 5:2-9).

In John's vision: Rev 11:19 — the only time the ark appears in Revelation.

TRUMPET

Made of ram's horn (Jos 6:4-6) and silver (Num 10:2). Uses prescribed by Moses (Num 10:1-10). Used in war, to summon soldiers, at the siege of Jericho, in time of danger. Used at Mount Sinai (Exo 19:13-19; Heb 12:19). On the great day of atonement (Isa 27:13). At the jubilee (Lev 25:9). At the bringing up of the ark (2Sa 6:5,15; 1Ch 13:8; 15:28). At the dedication of Solomon's temple (2Ch 5:12,13). In worship (1Ch 15:24; Psa 81:3,4).

SYMBOLICAL: Mat 24:31; 1Co 15:52; 1Th 4:16; Rev 1:10; 4:1; 8; 9:1-14; 10:7; 11:15.

Key connection: The trumpet links DOA (Isa 27:13), Jubilee (Lev 25:9), and the eschatological seventh trumpet (Rev 11:15).

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

Compared to parables of growth, judgment, and surprise (Mat 13; 18; 20; 22; 25). "My kingdom is not of this world" (Jhn 18:36). Children of the kingdom (Mat 18:3; 19:14). Keys of (Mat 16:19). Does not consist of meat and drink (Rom 14:17). Good news of (Luk 8:1).

JUBILEE

Called "the acceptable year of the LORD" (Isa 61:2). Called "the year of liberty" (Eze 46:17). Laws concerning: Lev 25:8-55; 27:17-24; Num 36:4.

Key connection: The Jubilee trumpet sounds ON the Day of Atonement (Lev 25:9). Liberty is proclaimed precisely when and because judgment occurs. The seventh trumpet of Rev 11:15 is the cosmic Jubilee.

HAIL

Plague of, in Egypt (Exo 9:18-29; Psa 78:48; 105:32). Destroys army of the Amorites (Jos 10:11). FIGURATIVE: Isa 28:2; Rev 8:7; 11:19; 16:21.

Key connection: Hail appears in all three judgment series — trumpets (8:7), the structural pivot (11:19), and bowls (16:21). In the theophany escalation (TM057), "great hail" is the 5th element added at the maximum point (Rev 11:19).

JUDGMENT

THE GENERAL: 1Ch 16:33; Dan 7:9,10; Mat 25:1-46; Rev 11:18; 20:11-15; 22:12. ACCORDING TO OPPORTUNITY AND WORKS: Gen 4:7; Psa 62:12; Eze 18:4-9; Mat 25:14-30; Rom 2:5-12; 2Co 5:10; Rev 2:23; 20:12,13.

TEMPLE

Solomon's temple contained the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies (1Ki 6:19; 8:6; 2Ch 5:2-10). A dwelling place of the Lord (1Ki 8:10,11,13; 2Ch 5:13,14; 7:1-3,16). FIGURATIVE: Of the kingdom of Christ (Rev 11; 14:15,17). Sending forth righteousness against evil (Rev 15:5-8; 16:1-17).

COVENANT

Sacred, binding. Blood of (Exo 24:8). Book of (Exo 24:7). The Mosaic law called a covenant (Exo 34:28). Of God with men: confirmed with oath, binding, everlasting, God faithful to. The Second Covenant (Jer 31:31-34; Heb 8:4-13; 12:18-24; 13:20).

Key connection: The "ark of his testament/covenant" (Rev 11:19) uses diatheke (G1242), linking to both the OT covenant law stored in the ark and the new covenant mediated by Christ.

WRATH

(Anger, judgment, punishment). See ANGER; GOD, ANGER OF; JUDGMENT; PUNISHMENT, DIVINE; PUNISHMENT, ETERNAL.

Key connection: Rev 11:18 uses orge (G3709, judicial wrath), while the subsequent bowl judgments use thymos (G2372, passionate fury). The announcement of orge precedes the execution in thymos.

THEOPHANY (no Nave's entry — discovered via cross-reference)

No direct Nave's topic. The concept emerges from cross-referencing the Sinai theophany (Exo 19:16-18) with Revelation's escalating theophany formula. The source tradition includes: thunders, lightnings, thick cloud, trumpet voice, earthquake, fire, smoke.

MERCY SEAT

Connected to ARK topic. The mercy seat (kapporeth, H3727) is the DOA-specific blood-sprinkling surface on the ark. All 27 OT occurrences relate to the ark's cover. LXX translates as hilasterion (G2435), connecting to Rom 3:25 ("whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation"). Key references: Exo 25:17-22 (construction), Lev 16:13-15 (DOA blood-sprinkling), Num 7:89 (God speaks from mercy seat).

DAY OF ATONEMENT

Linked to ARK ("ceremonies connected with, on the day of atonement," Lev 16:13-15) and TRUMPET ("at the jubilee," Lev 25:9). The DOA is the ONLY day when the ark is accessed. The ark's appearance in Rev 11:19 therefore implies DOA access — the Most Holy Place is opened. Key DOA features: annual (once per year, Heb 9:7), restricted (no man, Lev 16:17), cleansing (sanctuary purified, Lev 16:16,30,33), universal (all Israel, Lev 16:17,30,33).

TABERNACLE

The TEMPLE entry cross-references the tabernacle structure and the Most Holy Place where the ark was kept. Three-zone structure: outer court (sacrifice), Holy Place (daily service), Most Holy Place (DOA only). The veil separating Holy from Most Holy is theologically significant — access through the veil (Heb 10:19-20) corresponds to DOA access. See Exo 26:33; Heb 9:2-4.

GOD, GLORY OF

Related to the glory-filling phenomena at temple inaugurations (Exo 40:34-35; 1Ki 8:10-11; 2Ch 5:13-14; Isa 6:4) and at Rev 15:8 (temple filled with smoke from the glory of God). The glory-filling at Rev 15:8 is a COMPOSITE allusion: inauguration glory + DOA exclusion + Isaiah smoke theophany (confirmed by BRIDGE-2 study).

Cross-Topic Connections

The following Nave's cross-references form the key theological network: 1. ARK → DOA (Lev 16:13-15): The ark is DOA-specific furniture 2. TRUMPET → JUBILEE (Lev 25:9): Trumpet sounds ON the DOA 3. JUBILEE → LIBERTY (Lev 25:10): Liberty proclaimed when judgment occurs 4. JUDGMENT → WRATH (Rev 11:18): Wrath announced at seventh trumpet 5. TEMPLE → REVELATION (Rev 11:19; 15:5-8): Heavenly naos opened, ark visible 6. COVENANT → ARK (Rev 11:19): Ark of his diatheke = law/covenant revealed 7. HAIL → THEOPHANY (Rev 11:19; 16:21): 5th theophany element at structural pivot
