Note: ALL occurrences are in Revelation 10. This word appears NOWHERE else in the NT or LXX. It is a double diminutive (biblion → biblaridion), emphasizing the small size of the scroll.
Definition: a diminutive of [biblos]; a roll: bill, book, scroll, writing
Count: 32 (BLB) / 30 occurrences
Translations: book (20x), books (2x), a book (2x), a writing (1x), a bill (1x), the book (1x), of the book (1x), a scroll (1x), the books (1x)
Key verses as "book": Luk 4:17, Luk 4:20, Gal 3:10, Heb 9:19, Rev 5:2-5,7-9, Rev 17:8, Rev 20:12, Rev 21:27, Rev 22:7,9,10,18,19
Revelation distribution: Rev 5:1-9 (sealed scroll, 8x), Rev 10:8 (1x — note: the HEAVENLY VOICE uses biblion, not biblaridion, for the same book John calls biblaridion), Rev 13:8, Rev 17:8, Rev 20:12, Rev 21:27, Rev 22:7-19
Critical observation: In Rev 10:8, the voice from heaven calls it "to biblion" (the scroll), while John in vv. 2,9,10 calls it "to biblaridion" (the little scroll). The heavenly voice uses the larger term; John uses the diminutive.
Definition: of uncertain affinity; a witness (literally, judicially, or figuratively)
Count: 34 (BLB) / 33 occurrences
Translations: witnesses (18x), witness (5x), of witnesses (2x), martyr (2x), a witness (2x), to be a witness (1x), unto witnesses (1x), for a record (1x), martyrs (1x)
Key verses as "witness": Act 22:15, Rom 1:9, 1Th 2:5, Rev 1:5, Rev 3:14
Key verses as "witnesses": Mat 18:16, Mar 14:63, Luk 24:48, Act 1:8, 2:32, 3:15, 5:32, 6:13, 7:58, 10:39, 13:31, 2Co 13:1, 1Th 2:10, 1Ti 5:19, 6:12, 2Ti 2:2, Heb 10:28, Rev 11:3
Key verses as "martyr": Act 22:20 (Stephen), Rev 2:13 (Antipas)
Key verses as "martyrs": Rev 17:6 (blood of the martyrs of Jesus)
Semantic range: The word spans from legal witness (courtroom testimony, Mat 18:16) through eyewitness (Act 1:8) to one who testifies at the cost of life (Rev 2:13, 17:6). The English word "martyr" derives directly from this Greek word. Rev 11:3's "my two witnesses" (martyrsin mou) carries both senses.
Rev 10:11 context: "Thou must prophesy AGAIN [palin]" — the palin (again) suggests a renewed or repeated prophetic commission, not an entirely new one.
Key distinction from G2411 (hieron): naos = inner sanctuary/shrine (where God dwells). hieron = entire temple complex including outer courts. In Rev 11:1, John is told to measure the NAOS (inner sanctuary) and altar, but CAST OUT the court (aule) — the outer area. This distinction is critical: the inner sanctuary is measured (protected/assessed), the outer court is given to the Gentiles.
Definition: to measure (ascertain in size by a fixed standard)
Count: 10 occurrences (BLB)
Translations: measure (3x), ye mete (2x), he measured (2x), it shall be measured (1x), ye mete withal (1x), measuring (1x)
Key verses as "measure":Rev 11:1, Rev 11:2 (negative: "measure it NOT"), Rev 21:15
Other uses: Mat 7:2, Mar 4:24, Luk 6:38 (all: "with what measure ye mete"), 2Co 10:12
Ezekiel parallel: In Ezekiel 40-48, extensive temple measuring is done by an angelic figure with a measuring reed — the same imagery as Rev 11:1 (reed like a rod). The measuring function in Ezekiel marks out what belongs to God and delineates sacred space.
As "deep": Luk 8:31 (demons beg not to be sent), Rom 10:7 (who shall descend into?)
LXX usage: Gen 1:2 (tehom, primordial deep), Gen 7:11, Deu 8:7, Psa 71:20
Rev 11:7 significance: "The beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit" — this is the FIRST narrative appearance of a specific beast from the abyss. The same phrase recurs at Rev 17:8. The abyss-origin distinguishes this beast and connects it to the demonic realm introduced at Rev 9:1-11.
Definition: neuter of [hieros]; a sacred place, i.e., the entire precincts
Count: 71 (BLB) / 60 occurrences
Translations: temple (58x), that the temple (1x), temple.) (1x)
Distribution: ALL 60 NT occurrences are in the Gospels and Acts. ZERO in Revelation.
Key observation: hieron (temple complex, including courts) is COMPLETELY ABSENT from Revelation. John EXCLUSIVELY uses naos (inner sanctuary) when referring to the temple. This is theologically significant for Rev 11:1-2: the naos is measured (inner sanctuary), the aule (court) is cast out — but hieron is never used because in Revelation's heavenly/symbolic temple theology, the physical temple complex is not in view. The distinction between naos (measured, protected) and aule (given to Gentiles) is the distinction between true worship and external religious structures.
