Study R.8 — The Little Book and Two Witnesses (Rev 10–11:14)¶
Question¶
What is the "little book open" in the angel's hand (Rev 10)? Who are the two witnesses who prophesy for 1260 days (Rev 11:1-14)? How does this interlude relate to Daniel's sealed and now-unsealed prophecies?
Key Investigation Points (from plan)¶
- Rev 10:1-7 — mighty angel, little book open (biblaridion), "the mystery of God should be finished" at 7th trumpet
- The sealed→unsealed arc from
nt-ties-daniel-7-12-together: Dan 8:26, 12:4,9 → Rev 5:1-9 → Rev 10:2,8-10 → Rev 22:10 - Is the "little book" Daniel's prophecy, now opened?
- Rev 10:9-10 — sweet in mouth, bitter in belly — Ezek 3:1-3 parallel; experience of disappointment?
- Rev 11:1-2 — measuring the temple; "the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months"
- Rev 11:3-12 — two witnesses prophesy 1260 days in sackcloth; killed; resurrected after 3.5 days
- Identity of two witnesses: OT and NT? Law and Prophets? Historical identification?
- The 1260 days = 42 months = time-times-half chain (from
nt-ties-daniel-7-12-together) - Rev 11:13 — earthquake, 7000 killed, "the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven"
- Historical context: Millerite movement? French Revolution (two witnesses killed)?
Structural Context¶
Rev 10:1–11:14 is an INTERLUDE between the sixth and seventh trumpets. The second woe (sixth trumpet) does not conclude until Rev 11:14 ("The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly"). This entire section therefore falls WITHIN the sixth trumpet period — a critical placement for interpretation.
The prior studies established: - Rev 8:3-5: active intercession framework (censer scene, AN022, DOA-Strong) - Rev 8:7–9:21: trumpets 1-6 as progressive warning judgments, 1/3 fraction limitation - Rev 9:13: golden altar voice commands the sixth trumpet forces (SP037 Stage 3) - Rev 9:20-21: impenitence verdict — "repented not" despite six trumpets of warning - The trumpet series operates within ongoing intercession (Rev 15:8 = cessation)

Nave's Topics (8 topics)¶
- PROPHECY — Little book as fulfilled/unsealed prophecy; prophesying "again"
- WITNESS / TESTIMONY — Two witnesses (martyres), the testimony concept, legal witness requirements (Deu 17:6; 19:15)
- TEMPLE — Rev 11:1 measuring of the naos; distinction from hieron; Ezekiel's temple measuring
- SEAL — Sealed documents, Daniel's sealed book, opening of sealed things
- ELIJAH — Fire from heaven, shutting heavens, 3.5 years of drought; prototype for witness powers
- MOSES — Plagues on Egypt, water to blood; prototype for witness powers
- OLIVE — Olive trees in Zechariah 4, the two anointed ones; Rom 11:17-24 olive tree theology
- JERUSALEM — Holy city trodden down 42 months; Luke 21:24 parallel ("trodden down of the Gentiles")
Strong's Numbers (8+ words)¶
- G974 biblaridion — "little book" (diminutive of biblion); 4 NT occurrences, ALL in Rev 10:2,8,9,10. Why the diminutive? Does it distinguish from the biblion of Rev 5?
- G975 biblion — "book/scroll"; 32 occurrences. Used for the sealed scroll (Rev 5:1-9) and the book of life. Rev 10:8 uses BOTH words in proximity. What is the relationship?
- G3144 martys — "witness"; 34 occurrences. Rev 11:3 "my two witnesses" (martyres); connection to martyrdom (Rev 2:13 Antipas, 17:6 blood of martyres). Does the word carry both senses?
- G4395 propheteuo — "prophesy"; 28 occurrences. Rev 10:11 "prophesy again"; Rev 11:3 witnesses "shall prophesy." The prophetic commission theme.
- G3485 naos — "temple/shrine" (inner sanctuary); 46 occurrences (16 in Revelation). Rev 11:1 "the temple [naos] of God." Distinguished from hieron (G2411, temple complex). Why naos in Rev 11:1?
- G3354 metreo — "to measure"; 11 occurrences. Rev 11:1-2 measuring the temple. Ezek 40:3-5 parallel. What does measuring signify — protection, judgment, or assessment?
- G12 abyssos — "abyss/bottomless pit"; 9 NT occurrences. Rev 11:7 "the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit." First appearance of this specific beast — same as Rev 17:8?
- G2411 hieron — "temple complex" (outer courts); 71 occurrences. ABSENT from Revelation entirely. The exclusive use of naos in Revelation is significant for Rev 11:1-2.
Cross-Testament Connections¶
- Ezekiel scroll-eating → Rev 10 book-eating: Ezek 2:8–3:3 (scroll written within and without, sweet as honey) → Rev 10:9-10 (little book sweet then bitter). The additions (bitterness) and modifications signal interpretive development.
- Zechariah's two olive trees → Rev 11:4 two witnesses: Zech 4:2-3,11-14 (two olive trees flanking lampstand = "the two anointed ones that stand by the Lord of the whole earth") → Rev 11:4 ("the two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth"). Zechariah identifies them as Zerubbabel and Joshua; Revelation reapplies.
- Daniel's sealing → Revelation's unsealing: Dan 8:26 + 12:4,9 (seal the book until the time of the end) → Rev 5:1-9 (Lamb opens sealed scroll) → Rev 10:2 (little book OPEN in angel's hand) → Rev 22:10 (seal NOT). The arc is: sealed → being opened → fully open → commanded open.
- 1260-day chain: Dan 7:25 (time, times, dividing of time) → Dan 12:7 (time, times, half a time) → Rev 11:2 (42 months) → Rev 11:3 (1260 days) → Rev 12:6 (1260 days) → Rev 12:14 (time, times, half a time) → Rev 13:5 (42 months). All = 3.5 prophetic years.
- Moses/Elijah powers → Two witnesses powers: 1 Ki 17:1 + Jas 5:17 (Elijah shut heaven 3.5 years, fire from heaven 2 Ki 1:10) → Exo 7:17-20 (Moses turned water to blood, sent plagues) → Rev 11:5-6 (witnesses: fire, shut heaven, water to blood, plagues).
- Dan 10:5-6 → Rev 10:1: The mighty angel of Rev 10 shares features with the heavenly messenger of Dan 10:5-6 (linen, face like sun/lightning, feet/body like beryl/brass, loud voice). Parallel to Rev 1:13-16 as well.
- Luke 21:24 → Rev 11:2: "Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled" → "the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months." Direct verbal parallel: pateo/patountes.

DB Search Results Summary¶
- hist-study.db: hist-07 (NT connects Daniel 7-12) documents the sealed/unsealed reversal; hist-11 (Revelation 12) references Rev 11:2-3 as part of the 1260-day chain; hist-15 (trumpets as warnings) places two witnesses in the sixth trumpet interlude
- rev-study.db: rev-03 (throne room) established E074 sealed→unsealed arc (Dan 8:26 + 12:4 → Rev 5:1-9 → Rev 22:10); this study extends the arc through Rev 10:2,8-10
Analysis Framework (6 sections for 03-analysis.md)¶
- Verse-by-Verse Commentary: Rev 10:1-7 (mighty angel/little book/seven thunders), Rev 10:8-11 (eat the book/prophesy again), Rev 11:1-2 (measure temple/42 months), Rev 11:3-6 (two witnesses' powers), Rev 11:7-10 (witnesses killed by beast), Rev 11:11-14 (resurrection/ascension/earthquake)
- Structural Patterns: sealed→unsealed arc continuation (E074 extension), 1260-day chain across Daniel and Revelation, seven thunders sealed (ONLY sealed content in Revelation), sweet/bitter experience, interlude function between T6 and T7
- Word Study Integration: biblaridion vs biblion (diminutive significance), martyres/martyria (witness-to-martyrdom semantic range), propheteuo (prophetic commission), naos vs hieron (inner sanctuary emphasis at 11:1)
- Cross-Testament Theology: Ezek 2-3 scroll eating → Rev 10 (additions: bitterness), Zech 4 two olive trees → Rev 11:4 (reapplication), Moses/Elijah miracle parallels → witness powers, Dan 12:4/8:26 sealing → Rev 10:2 opened
- Difficult Questions: Identity of two witnesses (symbolic: OT/NT testimony? Law/Prophets? historical: Waldenses? Scriptures suppressed?), seven thunders content (why sealed?), "prophesy again" meaning, beast from abyss first narrative appearance (Rev 11:7), 3.5 days = 3.5 years?
- Synthesis: How Rev 10–11:14 functions as interlude between 6th and 7th trumpets — the prophetic commission is renewed (10:11), the temple is measured for protection (11:1), and the witnesses testify throughout the 1260-day period until the beast's temporary victory and their vindication
DOA Null-Hypothesis Test Points¶
- Does the naos measurement at 11:1 carry DOA significance (inner sanctuary access)?
- Does the 1260/42 months connect to the DOA timeline established in the sanctuary series?
- Does the "mystery of God finished" at the 7th trumpet (10:7) relate to the DOA transition from intercession to judgment?
- Is this passage DOA-neutral (interlude material) or DOA-connected through structural context?
